Game. On. 2017. The official matchday program of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football Season 2017

Welcome back to Round 8 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football and Round 9 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Women’s Capital Football.

Canberra FC maintained their spot at the head of the PS4 NPL table with a clean sheet win at home over Tigers FC last weekend. Former A-League forward Kofi Danning picked up his first goal for the season in that match, but Canberra Olympic kept pace with their neighbours as they came from behind to topple Gungahlin United. In the Women’s competition, Belconnen United extended their advantage at the top with a clinical victory over Gungahlin United while Woden-Weston upset the Academy and Canberra Olympic picked up their first points of the season in a draw with Monaro. This weekend promises to be another awesome one of football; follow all the action and updates on our social media!

Clinical Canberra FC knock over Tigers at Deakin Stadium to stay top Canberra FC 3 (Jordan Lamb 7’, Kofi Danning 23’, Kresic 25’) def. Tigers FC 0

A three-goal first half from Canberra FC paved the way for a clinical win over Tigers FC on Sunday as the ladder leaders kept a clean sheet at Deakin Stadium. On a perfect Sunday afternoon, it took only seven minutes for the home side to open the scoring as Jordan Lamb received a cross in the box before firing home past a scrambling Francis Bangweni in goals. Tigers held a large swathe of possession but were unable to convert as they had a goal ruled out, before the hosts doubled their advantage after 23 minutes. Former A-League forward Kofi Danning was on hand at close range to tuck a great cross away into the bottom corner and make it 2-0. And less than two minutes later it was three, with Danning turning provider. The speedster beat his marker before making hay down the right wing, and his delicate cross to Niko Kresic was tucked home easily to have Canberra FC cruising ahead. Tigers had their best chance yet on 35 minutes as Daniel Barac sent a header towards the top corner, only to see Sam Brown pop up with a terrific save to keep Tigers scoreless heading towards the break. With the half-time score remaining 3-0 Tigers needed to break out in the second half, however they nearly fell further behind fifteen minutes in. Danning again burst down the wing past his defender and into the box before laying the ball off past Bangweni to Thomas James. James fired home but the goal was chalked off for offside and had yet another goal ruled out for offside on 77 minutes as the home side pushed to extend the lead. Milan Popovich fired a testing effort from outside the box with eight minutes remaining only to see it blocked inside the area, and that was to be the last of Tigers’ chances as the match petered out. The 3-0 win keeps Canberra FC atop the table, level on points with Canberra Olympic and facing the Centre of Excellence next week, while Tigers will look to bounce back against Belconnen United as they languish in sixth on the table.

Belconnen extened lead at top with clean sheet win at Gungahlin Gungahlin United 0 def. by Belconnen United 2 (Whittall 5’, 27’) Belconnen United extended their lead at the top of the NPL Women’s table on Sunday as Maddy Whittall’s first half brace gave them a 2-0 win over Gungahlin United. Gungahlin played host to Belconnen, looking to pry an upset off the dominant Blues at Nicholls Enclosed Oval. The home side was looking to bounce back from a resounding loss to Canberra FC, while the visitors were looking to make it six straight wins. Belconnen started the game at high intensity, working the ball well through the middle and creating space in behind the Gungahlin backline. The hosts looked to retaliate on the counter attack with the pacey Ashleigh Palombi and Alex Lawrence looking sharp The Blue Devils struck early, as the league’s top scorer Whittall was quick to react to a loose ball in the box after a corner, and found the ball at her feet to slot home after 5 minutes. Gungahlin continued to apply pressure on the break, but Diego Iglesias’ side could not break down the Belconnen defensive line. The home side doubled their lead in the 27th minute, after Gungahlin’s Najwa Allen failed to control a pass under the pressure of Whittall and the sharp shooter made no mistake, slotting home calmly past Sophie Rolfe and bagging a brace. The Blue Devils were unlucky not to go up 3 on the cusp of half time, as Ellie Raymond leapt to win the header from a corner, only to be denied by the crossbar. A change of tactics for the second half saw Iglesias call upon the fresh legs of dangerous winger Brittany Palombi, and the change gave the home side further confidence on the counter attack. The second period saw a much more end-to-end affair, as Gungahlin were eager to claw their way back into the game while Belconnen were keen to extend their lead. Hunger from both sides lead to aggression, as the opponents started to put more into challenges and the game turned into a fiery encounter Gungahlin were unlucky not to pinch a goal back in the 71st minute, after Belconnen failed to clear from a set piece, but the golden opportunity was desperately met by the head of Allen who fired inches wide.

Gungahlin pressed on against a strong Belconnen defensive unit, but the league leaders held onto a first half lead to see the game out and secure a hard-fought three points. By Mitchell Keenan
