LEGACY

Let’s Talk

Another year is off to a great start at The Community Foundation. As we wrapped up 2022, we took time to reflect on the changes and accomplishments we saw at the Foundation and across our community. (Watch for more in our 2022 Annual Report coming in June.) We have already seen the trajectory for 2023 moving upward and onward. We are energized!

In this issue of Legacy, you can find out how to connect with the staff of The Community Foundation and learn about a new fund that will increase grantmaking in the community of Albany. We also introduce Community Grants and share the first quarter awards.

I hope it’s clear that we are your partner in philanthropy. The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County is YOUR community foundation. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by to learn more about how you can be a partner this year!

Your Philanthropic Partners

Over the last year, The Community Foundation announced many exciting changes: a change in leadership, a new home, new funds, and new partners. The need for these changes stems from natural growth, as the organization has worked to build and maintain the community’s trust as a resource for community philanthropic dollars.

At the heart of our mission – to encourage philanthropy, assist donors in building an enduring source of charitable assets, and exercise leadership in directing resources to enhance the quality of life for residents of Muncie and Delaware County – is the need for strong relationships. Those relationships require staff to listen, learn, and share with donors, nonprofits, and fellow community leaders.

To support that focus on relationships, Foundation staff received new titles. An updated organizational structure creates teams focused on operations, donor relations, and nonprofit relations.

Marcy Minton, President & CEO, oversees the teams, assuring the Foundation’s work is representative, responsive, and relevant to the community’s priorities. She welcomes conversations with donors, nonprofits, and other stakeholders of the Foundation, serves in community leadership roles, and works closely with the Board of Directors.

Connecting to The Community Foundation has never been easier.

Announcing Community Grants

$947,435 awarded in first quarter of 2023

This year, The Community Foundation shifted to a Community Grants program. Nonprofit organizations have a wide-open door for applications instead of separate applications for our multiple grant programs. This quarter, The Community Foundation had 24 organizations reach out with initial requests for funding.

The flexibility of Community Grants allows the Foundation’s Program & Nonprofit Relations team to develop a deeper understanding of the needs within our community. That knowledge enables Foundation staff and volunteers to connect nonprofits to resources and gives nonprofits more time to focus on their mission work.

Organizations received $974,435 in competitive Community Grants during the first quarter of 2023.

A Better Way Services, Inc. received $60,000 to support the cost of operations.

Animal Rescue Fund received $17,200 to complete the renovation of their adoption center.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Muncie received $65,000 to support operations and defray expansion costs at their Madison Street location.

Cardinal Greenway Inc. received $35,000 to support the cost of operations.

Investing in Albany

New Fund Honors the Legacy of Community Spirit of Albany Family

Rick and Wilma Frazee cared about their hometown. Establishing a fund to support their town only seemed fitting to honor their legacy.

The Albany Fund, in memory of the Frazee Family, was established in 2022 by their daughter-inlaw, Barb Frazee. The fund will support programs and projects that benefit residents in the town of Albany, Indiana.

“Rick and Wilma’s love of the community and passion for doing good will have a much longer impact through an endowment for Albany,” said Barb Frazee.

Professionally, Rick and Wilma served – Rick as a schoolteacher in Dunkirk for 38 years and Wilma as a nurse in Muncie. They also gave their time and talents in many ways. They were members of the Lions Club. Wilma regularly volunteered at the Albany Library. Together Rick and Wilma volunteered at the Albany Halloween Parade, a tradition that holds special memories for visiting grandchildren.

“It’s important that the things that matter in a small town get to continue,” said Barb. “To keep a place thriving, you have to have people willing to reinvest. You’re willing to reinvest if you see good things happening.”

The Albany Fund, in memory of the Frazee Family, is the fourth town endowment fund held at The Community Foundation. Grants awarded from town endowment funds are initially reviewed by a committee of people who live or work in that town. The Albany Fund will award its first grant in 2023. As a permanently endowed fund, the Albany Fund will benefit the town and its residents today, tomorrow, and always. Caring community members are invited to invest in their community with a gift to help grow this fund at cfmdin.org/give.
