LET’S TALK
LEVERAGING TRUST AMID UNCERTAINTY
After the year we have all experienced, it’s natural to want to rush toward 2021 and the potential for a brighter tomorrow. But this year end, we are taking the time to pause and reflect on the amazing efforts of our community coming together to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and the other challenges of 2020. We’ve seen nonprofit organizations create new partnerships to ensure that clients in need receive services safely. We’ve watched as trust is built and tested between individuals, organizations, donors and funders, only to strengthen the relationships that are being forged. In this issue of Legacy, you’ll read about how the trust of The Community Foundation’s donors, today and in the past, is vital to the way we were able to respond in this time of community crisis. A history of giving to The Unrestricted Fund created flexibility to respond to the needs of community-serving organizations. Additional giving to The Unrestricted Fund in the early days of COVID-19, stretched that ability to respond even further. As we approach the end of this year, we trust that the relationships strengthened during these challenging times will continue. We trust that all of us will do our part to make a brighter future for Muncie and Delaware County. We extend our gratitude to you for putting your trust in The Community Foundation today, tomorrow, and always.
Kelly K. Shrock, President

A
gift to The Community Foundation is rooted in trust. In most cases, donations made today last forever. The governance structure of the Foundation including the Board of Directors, Investment, Finance, and Grants Committees, ensures that every dollar invested is put to good use to grant today or grow for the challenges of tomorrow.
“The Community Foundation is one of the best-stewarded organizations around,” said Wil Davis, a former Foundation Board Chair. Wil and Cindy Davis regularly support The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation. “We feel really good if we are able to join forces with the Foundation on occasion.” Donors like Wil and Cindy trust the Foundation Board of Directors and staff to respond to the needs in the community. In 2020 The Community Foundation responded quickly to the local impact of a global crisis, while remembering the value of a long-term commitment to the community. continued on page 2
This year, The Community Foundation awarded $971,600 in quarterly competitive grants, primarily from unrestricted funds. At the same time, the Foundation continues to respond to the community’s needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The long-term trust of Foundation donors in The Unrestricted Fund made it all possible. In March, as Delaware County saw its first confirmed case of COVID-19 and armed with the knowledge that the pandemic would impact the local community, the Board approved $20,000 COVID-19 response grants supported of the annual strategic grants budget be allocated for emergency response grants. To assure Open Door Health Services utilizing funds quick access to awarded funds, grants of $2,000 or less could be approved by a committee of from The Unrestricted Fund. the staff. These were ratified by the Board at the following monthly meeting. That same week, staff began calling local nonprofit organizations – grantees, agencies with designated funds, identified human service organizations, and regular partners – to understand how they were being impacted. Previously awarded grantees were given the flexibility to repurpose grant dollars if programming changed because of the pandemic. The first $20,000 in emergency response funding provided 12 organizations $1,000 to $2,000 grants for personal protective equipment for staff, food or supplies for food distributions, medical supplies, nutrition supplements, and more. The conversations with nonprofit organizations continued. Understanding that the need for emergency response funding would continue, the Foundation began to have conversations with donors as well. It was decided that gifts to The Unrestricted Fund from April through June would be used directly for COVID-19 response efforts. Donors and local funders contributed more than $67,000 to The Unrestricted Fund during this period. That funding has supported more than 44 organizations “Giving to The Unrestricted Fund gives The Community Foundation more leverage to meet community needs or capture grants to bring funding to our community,” explained Cindy Davis. “Through the Foundation, we trust that our gifts are a piece of the bigger picture of community giving.”
Delaware County Emergency Management utilized a COVID-19 response grant to purchase PPE to distribute across the county.
When donors come together to support The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, the impact to the community is great. Unrestricted funds make it possible to be responsive to the community’s changing and emerging needs. The Foundation is grateful for those who have already put their trust in the Foundation and will continue to earn the trust of the community today, tomorrow, and always.

FOUR WAYS TO GIVE TO CONSIDER AT YEAR-END 2020 has been a year full of unique challenges, difficult conversations, and new adventures. As the year comes to a close, The Community Foundation invites you to consider making an end-of-the-year gift to support the causes that matter most to you. We always appreciate your gift to The Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation, or a complete list of funds can be found online at cfmdin.org/funds.
HOW CAN I MAKE A GIFT AT YEAR-END? APPRECIATED STOCK
CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY
At year-end, I could gift some shares of appreciated stock I’ve held for a year to The Community Foundation. My income tax deduction is the stock’s fair market value, far less than my out-of-pocket cost for that stock.
If I am older, I could use a matured CD, a retirement plan distribution, or matured savings bonds I’ve redeemed to fund a charitable gift annuity (“CGA”). A CGA often provides higher than market income for life to me and another older person, with an income tax deduction, too. The Community Foundation can provide calculations showing how a CGA could work for me.
IRA DISTRIBUTION
REAL ESTATE
If I am 70 ½ or older with an IRA, I could ask my IRA plan custodian to send a check from my IRA directly. That IRA distribution to charity will not be included in my taxable income, making my customary annual gift pre-tax, and count towards my required annual minimum distribution.
If I have real estate, like rental properties or farms, or a business that I am considering disposing of, I could ask The Community Foundation about charitable plans that can be funded often pre-tax with part or all of such appreciated assets, providing income to me and my spouse, children, or siblings.
Please consult your financial advisors for specific questions regarding your tax situation. To learn more about the different ways to give at The Community Foundation, contact Kelly K. Shrock, president, at 765-747-7181 or kshrock@cfmdin.org.
