building a community that works for everyone Northern Virginia thrived in 2019. The economy was strong. Our K-12 schools systems excelled. Our institutions of higher education launched new, innovative approaches to workforce development. Our social and government sectors thoughtfully attended to local needs and interests. While there is much to celebrate in such an environment, it is remarkable to consider that poverty, as a percentage of the total population, ticked up in Northern Virginia last year, and our region reflects the same downward trend in economic mobility as does the rest of the country. If you are born into poverty, your chances of climbing out of it over the course of your life are not what they used to be, especially if your family lives in a high poverty, low opportunity neighborhood during your childhood. The Community Foundation therefore spent the year growing opportunity for those who may not have it. We invested in programs that skill up the hard to employ segments of our workforce. We supported the region’s most critical nonprofits and their important work. We provided basic needs assistance for our neediest neighbors. We connected our amazing donors to local community.
Many people feel a deep connection to work that helps build a more resilient and welcoming community. Neighbors who give and neighbors who receive all have a home with us.

A “get out the count” initiative for the 2020 Decennial Census at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia
The Business Case for Economic Mobility March 7, 2019
Reviving the Dream: Designing Technology for Social Wellbeing Thursday, September 13, 2018
This year, we launched “Count the Region” to help get out the count for the 2020 Census in Northern Virginia, making sure everyone living in Northern Virginia is counted, counted once, and counted in the right place. The importance of the 2020 Census cannot be overstated. For every Virginia who is not counted, the region loses $1,200 per year for 10 years, or $12,000 total, in federal assistance program allocations.
In March of 2019, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia hosted the 2nd Annual Shape of the Region Conference in partnership with Northern Virginia Regional Commission, Northern Virginia Technology Council, and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce. The event served as a platform to discuss economic mobility, income inequality, and increased opportunity for our region.

building philanthropy 2018- 2019 DO NO R ESTAB LISHE D FU N D S The Community Foundation holds 220 Funds that support the philanthropy of the donors who establish them. Grants to nonprofit organizations in this region, throughout the United States, and even abroad are awarded from their funds at the donors’ recommendations. Donors have also helped establish permanent community endowments from which the
Community Foundation awards grants to support the most critical needs of the region and to seed innovative solutions now and for future generations. Following is a comprehensive list of all funds held at the Community Foundation.
“ When my wife passed away in 2013, I felt a compulsion to do something to help others in a way that would honor her. We (Rachel’s mother and I) opened The Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund to benefit single mothers and their children, victims of domestic violence, abused and neglected children, child and youth development, children’s health, and other causes that help improve the lives of women and children. These were the causes that Rachel would have been (and was) particularly concerned about. In part, this is because she was a single mother herself and faced difficult times when her children were young. After her passing, we wanted to extend Rachel’s reach and give her the credit. Also, having a named fund helped spur giving from those who knew and loved her. I have enjoyed working with the Community Foundation staff. The Community Foundation’s donor advised funds offer a superior flexibility to giving, and the fund’s abilities to connect in a unique and personal way with the local community make them all the more special.” – Rod Harrell, Donor Advisor, Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund

building opportunity 2018- 2019 SCHOL A RSHIP RECIP IEN TS The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia manages twelve scholarships and administers the funds for fifteen other scholarships that support Northern Virginia students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.
“ The Rose Koury Scholarship allows me to attend my dream school and continues to allow me to learn from some of the best and most informed teacher education professors in America. Without this scholarship, my education at Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio), would not be possible due to high out-of-state tuition costs. Every day I have the privilege to learn about what I want to do, in my favorite place on earth, and the Rose Koury Scholarship is to thank for that. I am majoring in Early Childhood Education, with hopes to come back to Northern Virginia and begin work as an Elementary School teacher. In that position, I hope to help mold my future students into young leaders, academics, and change-makers.” – Erin Poplin

“ The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia identifies critical needs in the community and the many ways in which you can help. I have worked with the Foundation for over twenty years and watched its impact and leadership grow, including its work in partnership with other nonprofits and government to address needs as diverse as helping military families, taking care of our elderly, teaching our school children about healthy lifestyles and financial responsibility, bringing fresh produce to areas of need, awarding scholarships, even preserving honey bees, to name a few. The Foundation created the Opportunity Index to provide factual information about our community and is working with local, state and federal officials to foster participation in the 2020 Census. I served on the Foundation’s Board for seven years and over time participated in many committees and task forces, including the Grant Committee, Diversity Task Force, Marketing Committee, Gala Committee, Scholarship Committee and most recently the Civic Leadership Committee. I created a donor advised fund in my mother’s memory and, more recently, a named fund to support the Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia that will carry on important work in our community. Whatever your philanthropic interests are, together with the Foundation, you can make a difference where you and your family live.” – Sylvia von Bostel von Bostel Family Charitable Fund
