BRIEF To design a ‘Boxpark North’, located close to Salford central station, a hub for connectivity. The site should collaborate leisure and retail, whilst creating a social space.

SITE The site that we are going to construct our shipping container box park is a brown cross street carpark, located in Salford just a short 140 yard walk south of Salford central train station. The site has an approximate area of around 3842m2. This site is ideal to build a leisure park on filled with bars, restaurants, shops as well as a large courtyard area where people can come and enjoy sporting events live while experiencing a lively atmosphere. There are three main entrances. I propose that the two entrances on Yorkshire street be for the customers coming In and out of the park giving them two ways either side of the park to enter, maximising accessibility to the shops and restaurants. The third entrance to the park, slightly further down brown cross street, on to Johnson street. I propose this entrance be used for deliveries for the business wether it be more stock for the shops or food and drink being delivered to the restaurants as well as the comings and going of staff so the main entrance is free to serve the customers only.

SITE ACCESS;

Access from the roads to the site are in abundance. There are 4 entrances, (pre construction). The first entrance to the site is located on quay street. This is will be kept as an entrance for visitors to the box park. There are two entrances located on brown cross street. Both will be kept in place but one will be used for guests and another will be used for the delivery of stock and food for the occupants of the shops and restaurants that will be in there. there wont be any access for viechles other than the delivery point but i propose adding a loading bay as to minimise any disruption to any guests trying to entre the park Finally there is also an entrance on spaw street. This entrance is located under the arch of the train tracks. This allows very easy access for anyone travelling from further away than the surrounding area. Nearby to the site is one of Salfords most well known hotels. The Lowry Hotel. The hotel can accommodate 165 rooms. The guests of this hotel will be a mere 2 minute walk away from our site and will have unlimited access to the park during their stay. Furthermore the surrounding areas contain a lot od offices. Our box park would be ideal for people on their lunch to come and enjoy some food and a good atmosphere.

The photos are presented with numbers correlating to the diagram (top, left) of the position on site where the photo has been taken from. Imagery demonstartes the existing architectural styles surrounding the site. Figure 1. presents the access to the site from New Bailey street. This roadfollows past the ‘AO ‘ building of which features a living green wall. This could be incorpriated into designs further through the project. To show continuity through linking the design and location.

SITE HISTORY

Fig 1. Historic map taken from digimaps of the site during 1890s. The map shows that the site was aurrounded by industrial warehouses. Salford in has a history of industry, mainly in textiles, of which pre dates the industrial revolution. The railway viaduct, built 1865, connects Salford Central staion, located on New Bailey street, to Manchester Victoria station. The viaduct occupies the west of the site, with New Bailey street passing underneath the viaduct via bridge. Engineered by Sturges Meek. Doric col- Fig 2. Fig 3.

Figure 3 presents a contemporary map of the site and surrounding area. the blue triangles represent the listed buildings. The map shows that several listed buildings surround the proximity of the site. The closest listing to the site is the Grade II listed viaduct, this is shown to the left of the red line boundary of fig.3, by three blue triangles. In addition, this map too shows that the three bridges near to the site location are too listed.

SITE ANALYSIS Figures present the sun path analysis throughout a single day.

SHADOW ANALYSIS; Through the shadow analysis we can see where the sun and the shade is at what part of the day. As our box park will be geared towards summer when most of the big sporting events are on and when people are most likely to go to outdoor beer gardens.i have done the analysis on the first of June and measured where the sun would be shining on our park in two hour intervals from 10am to 8pm. As you can see by the variety of diagram that when the time gets around 6pm the sun on the main seating area in the centre of the site starts to get a little shaded. So the park must be geared towards day events. Although when the sun goes down it’s only a matter of some outdoor space heaters to keep the guests warm. The site is surrounded by fairly tall buildings which block the sun, although the train tracks to the north of the site is only 2 stores tall, meaning that the site has exposure to the sun for longer later in the day but in the mornings will be in the shade by the surrounding buildings such as the AO office and the residential high rise SW of the site. furthermore, the prevailing win coming predominatly from the west in manchester, the way the site in orentated the guests, depending on where they are, are mainly sheltered from the elements by the shipping containers

CONCEPT AND SKETCHES 1. Shipping containers positioned stacked to 90 degree angle

2. Transform 90 degree to alternate angles and staggered position.

3. Involvement of green spaces. Inspired by living green wall present on the exterior of the existing AO building parralell to site.

(Above) Sketch of abstract structure design for front entrance to the site. This has been inspired by ‘Precedent study five’, previously shown.

MASSING

The shipping containers are colour coordinated with their occupational use. Shaded from light to dark; with light representing use of ‘unspecified’ being used by independent shops, etc. The middle shade containers would be used for food and the darkest for bars. There are also several containers in grey at the front entrance of the site, these form an abstract sculpture, designed to look as if a stack of containers has fallen. There is a screen located at the front of these grey containers. This screen could be used to show sports events, Making the site an event space. The bars are located at the front entrance to the site. Surrounding the event screen. The food is mixed around the site, mainly located near to the bars, and also in the U-shape covered area, underneath the first two storeysection of the site. Seating areas are positioned throughout the site. Used to create seperated zones aswell as a place to sit down. This is intertwinned with greenery.
