CARDBOARD CAFE ARCHITECT. Nudes LOCATION. Mumbai, India

Paradise jungle wallpaper. Print pattern, colours and theme to be introduced into design. Incorpriation of plants.

Chosen for the unique design choice of using cardboard to create visually stimulative and textured internal walls. As a view the curvature of the shape stimulates a relaxing feeling of the space. The carved shape compliments the soft apperance of the material. The layers of cardboard vary slightly in colour, creating an additionally visual quality of asthetic.

The chairs infront of this feature wall are a soft olive green cloth with exposed mahogony wood legs.

Cardboard was chosen as a material here for its recylable, biodegradable, insulating and sound absorbtion properties.

The colours used here could be introduced into the following designs.

Using compacted wallpaper sheets, this precedentcould influence designs.

LOCATION. Indonesia

Inspiration from the floor seating style common across Indonesia. The table - often wooden - is raised above the ground. Whilst the seating is at floor level. Cushions - often patterned - are plced on the floor. Sometimes ontop of bamboo as the precedent image shows.

This seating arrangement could form an inonesian asthetic to the interior.

BRAND SELECTION / DOUBLE CONTAINER / LEISURE / BRAND; GRAHAM & BROWN

Graham & Brown

ISSUE A common issue with ordering wallpaper is the sample. Previous to buying a large roll of a wallpaper, the customer wants to see a sample. However these are often A5 or A4, which is not large enough to visulise a large wall of the wallpaper. This is an issue that the space should resolve.

BRAND IDENTITY Products include bold patterned wallpapers and coloured paint. The existing shops have a dated look to them. With plain cream painted walls, un-neatley organised products and pine wood floors. The brand logo is a black background with white text, ‘Graham & Brown’. Image one shows the manufacturing factory, the exterior of this modern factory is a bold pink section of a wallpaper pattern. The background and text is in light blue. In contrast, image three is the interior of one of the existing shops. The layout creates small sections with a walkpath in the centre of the space. The wallpaper is poorly presented,

Example of a wallpaper sample. This doesnt show what the design would look like as only a small section is displayed.

INITIAL IDEAS Ideas sprouted from the investigation into the brand identity.

Although Graham and Brown is a retail brand. The concept design produced will be for leisure use. Using the products of the brand.

Image two.

INITIAL IDEAS / DOUBLE CONTAINER / GRAHAM & BROWN

Image three.

The existing shops do not present the wallpaper patterns as a fetaure. This does not draw customers in to the store. Thus the design must engage the customers with the brand as an experience. This should be through presenting the products through visual stimulation, and interaction. The dated asthetic of existing shop interiors could be contrasted with a modern brand identity.

CONCEPT

Curved wooden pieces attached provide a welcoming flow to the space, leading to the counter. The lower rom of shapes are wider, this is so they can be used by customers to sit on, and the higher row as a table.

3D printed food and bevergaes, such as cakes, coffee and toast. Incorpriates the patterns of the brands wallpaper designs, and the containers use, as a coffee house. - This use of advnaced technology would attract customers, as it is unusual.

Customers would use this space as somewhere to wait for the counter, a social space and alternative seating arrangement - other to the floor seating.

PLAN VIEW BACK ELEVATION Inspiration taken from precedent studies one and three. The wallpaper by Graham & Brown shown in precedent one is featured on the back left wall of this design. The forest pattern of the wallpaper lead to the Indonesian style the space focuses to achieve. The floor seating of precedent three creates a relaxed social space at the right of the design.

The colour pallet used is a relfection of typical Indonesian browns and oranges. Less commonly used would be greens, however, used here to demonstrate a modern twist. The olive green paint plays with nature, demonstrated through the deatured wallpapered section of wall. Wood has been incorpriated in relation to the manufacturing process of wallpaper, of which uses wood pulp. Pod developed - Pods have been developed to all be on the same level, these are raised from ground level, to create a sense of differnet space. Drawn top right - the pods could have a door that would lift up on it, improving privacy.

Cylindrical half tubes contain plants. This is sketched on the right side of the left set of drawings. The plants link to the brands sustainability initiavite. Partion wall positioned between the two doorways creates a specific space for takeaways, whilst the other door leads to the seating area and ordering space. The idea behind this is to reduce waiting times for customers queing.

The concept of the space is preseneted through the strong displaying of the products. This is achieved in a variety of formats. The concpet visualises the wallpaper brand into a cafe. Creating a social space to experience the products. The products are displayed on the food produced in the cafe area. The customer journey follows through to a relaxed seating area, of which wraps around the bold wooden feature. Located on teh coffee tables are tablets. Displaying the products the brand offers. Instead of requesting a small wallpaper sample - often discarded as is difficult to visualise. The ‘sample’ is projected onto the digital, ‘LED Wallpaper’, wall oposite. Located on this wall is also a tablet. This tablet can be used to order products to the customers home address.

Customer travels through space to seating area. Tablet provided enables customer to search for the wallpaper design presented on their bevergae or food. A sample can be chosen. Displayed on opposing wall, the customer can see the entire design. Disgarding the problem of small samples commonly used. Product can then be ordered from the tablet.

DEVELOPMENTS; Design developments from previous designs include. Seating fits into wooden strcuture. by following the curve. This allows an open space to view the LED wallpaper screen. 3 ‘lounge’ seats at end of structrue mimic wallpaper hanging off the wall. Each are different thicknesses and textures. Allowing a touch aspect to the space and displaying the different options of the wallpaper paper. Table hangings down from ceiling next to seating. The oval shape follows the curves of the wall. A tablet is located on the table, this can be used to changeZthe wallpaper pattern displayed on the LED screen on the opposing screen. Two rectangular pieces extrude across the ceiling and down the wall. Continuing the lines of the wooden partitions. The larger rectangle has a small table edge, and a tablet screen. This screen would be used to browse the online website and order products.

INTERNAL VIEWS; Series of internal views are presented to illustrate the space through eye level. View one is located at the door facing the back of the space. The curve of the partition feature on the left wall is illustrated clearly. View two looks from the back left towards the front. This shows how the table, located at the front right, blends with the space. View three demonstrates the 3d printer. This would be used to print the wallpaper patterns onto foods produced by the cafe.

SKETCHES / SINGLE CONTAINER/ ADIDAS

1.

1.

3.

Using ideas from precedent study number 5 and 8. Use of natural wood materials such as rattan and bamboo.

Similar to sketch 2 inspiration for the water feature arose from precedent study 7. The water would fall infront and behind the yoga studio floor space. The sides of the studio could be cladd.

2.

A Video screen could project yoga tutorials for the visitor to follow along with.

Falling water aspect shares similarities to precedent study 8. In this design 3 water would fall vertically from upper water basin located below ceiling height. Lower water baisn wraps around rectangular raised floor. The yoga would take place here.

4.

2.

Sketch 4 projects design inspiration from precedent number 8. The low windows alow natural light, exterior views and semi-privacy to the user. An idea illustrated here is for the floor to be glass. Using this material fake plants could ‘grow’ beneath. This is as alot of yoga poses have the user facing the floor.

C DEVELOPMENTS AND DESIGN DISCUSSION; Entrance space - a rattan sofa is located next to the large window. The material use of rattan originates from the precedent studies, followed into the material pallet. Water wall in the entrance would turn off when the yoga studio is booked. This booking could take place via an app or online site, the code to the studio for the front door would be given out digitally too. This feature means that no staff would be required . Lowering costs of running the studio.

PLAN SECTION

The dome ‘pods’ created by the wooden partions has been altered to form a single space with an arched ceiling. Inbetween the arched gaps is glass, the water wall continues across the ceiling and falls down to the floor, following the internal curve. Low windows span across the studio space. Views are diffused because of the water that flows infornt. Producing gentle light patterns into the space. The left internal wall of the studio contains a large digital screen. This would display a ‘workout class’ video, when the space is in use. Surrounding this screen are two large plant walls. Plants are used for their biophillic properties; producing a calming space, purifying the air, mental stimulation, etc.

RIGHT SIDE SECTION

FRONT ELEVATION

Front elevations illustrate each zone of the space. The external front view showcases the water wall. Used to create privacy and seperate the studio from the external environment. The lack of visibilty into the further space creates intrigue.

Section BB. As illustarted on ‘PLAN SECTION’, this section plane is taken after the water wall.

Section AA illustrates the entrance space in a clearer view.

Section CC is taken at the back of the space. A white voil has been used to seperate the chaning room from the yoga studio space. The voil creates privacy without deminishing the room of natural sunlight - from the windows.

The floor space of the studio - the raised natural wooden floor space is surrounded by a water pool. Used for calming aspect, and producing an ‘escape’ from the city. Original design posed a storage room at the back of the structure. This has been developed to include a changing room. This use is more practical. There is also storage for yoga mats located here. Lighting A sculptural rattan ceiling light is positioned centrally in the entrance room. In the main studio space there are small wall lights at ground level. On the opposing wall windows flood the space with natural sunlight. As the chaning room is entered through a voil the net light matrerial allows natural light to enter the space. Low level artificial lighting is also present in this space.
