was going to write this column about potential. You’ll notice the underlying theme of potential in our stories this month. From NASCAR’s next wave of superstars to the Truck Driver Challenge’s newest champions, potential has either been realized or is still waiting to be lived up to.
I
But somehow, in my research on potential, I came across quotes from NASCAR drivers that had me laughing and shaking my head at the same time. And since we wrap up another season of NASCAR this month, and our cover story is on NASCAR’s next generation (Page 20), I thought it would be the perfect time to share our top 10 favorites quotes from and about NASCAR.

A Closer Look: THE WRIGHT BROTHERS
November is Aviation History Month, so what better way to celebrate than to learn about the two brothers who made the world think twice about modern aviation. Although born in the Midwest, Orville and Wilbur Wright made their famous attempt to take flight on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1903. The first successful flight lasted 12 seconds and a whopping 120 feet. Neither Orville nor Wilbur graduated from high school. The family’s frequent moves didn’t allow either brother to receive a formal diploma. That first flight didn’t exactly make the headlines – there were only five witnesses and just a few newspapers even wrote a story about it. The Wright Flyer, is on exhibit at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, although Orville did not want to donate it. It wasn’t until a year after his death that it made it to the museum. Neil Armstrong brought a small piece from the left propeller and a piece of fabric from the Wright Flyer with him on his expedition to the moon. The Wright brothers were not aviators by trade. They ran a newspaper business for years as well as a bicycle repair shop. The Wright Flyer, which was actually a glider, not a plane, weighed 605 pounds, had a horsepower of 12 and had a wing span of 40 feet.

hree competitions produced three top transport drivers as champions of the 2014 Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge. Concluding its 11th year, this year’s Truck Driver Challenge fielded its most competitive lineup of drivers in its history.
T
IndyCar
Rick Pearson of Chip Ganassi Racing won this year’s IndyCar Championship, and $30,000 cash prize, capping the team’s second championship in a row (Todd Deneve was last year’s winner). Pearson built a lead early in the season, winning the first two IndyCar chicanes in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Indianapolis, and never relinquished it. “This means more to me and my family than you could know,” says
Pearson. “I really want to thank Pilot Flying J for putting this on for the transport drivers. It’s a lot of fun for us to get together and compete with one another, and win a bonus for the work we do.” Pearson faced some stiff competition from fellow Chip Ganassi transport driver Jake Klomp, who finished second overall in the standings. For third place, it came down to the season’s final event, with Rollie Kirby from Andretti Autosport making a lastminute effort to shake up the standings. Posting just the second perfect score of the season, Kirby took first place in IndyCar Chicane No. 4, thus clinching third place overall for the season, and a check for $2,500.
NHRA
After a tight race to the finish, Gary Cummin of Western Motorsports won this year’s NHRA Championship. “I finished second place last year, and I was determined to win it all this season,” says Cummin. “It’s awesome what Pilot Flying J does for us. If a team wins a race the transport driver might get a bonus. This is our only opportunity where we know we can come out and earn something extra that can make a difference.” Duane Doffing of Tuttle Motorsports finished second to Cummin, after the two transport drivers were neckand-neck for the entire season. The margin between Cummin and Doffing was just 5 points, representing a mere one-error difference in the standings.
TOP: IndyCar Champion Rick Pearson, with wife Lori. MIDDLE: NHRA Champion Gary Cummin, with owner and driver V. Gaines. BOTTOM: NASCAR Champion JAMIE PRICE, with the president of Joe Gibbs Racing, J.D. Gibbs. Matt Smith of Matt Smith Racing finished third overall, becoming the first racer to place in any championship for the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge. Unlike most racers, Smith both races and drives his own transport hauler.
NASCAR
Jamie Price of Joe Gibbs Racing won this year’s NASCAR Championship, becoming the third transport driver in the history of the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge to win multiple championships. Price had what is perhaps the most dominant season in the competition’s history, finishing in the top-3 of every NASCAR chicane this season. Tom McCrimmon of Joe Gibbs Racing, also a two-time NASCAR champion, finished second overall and finished in the top-3 for the seventh consecutive year. In his highest finish to date, Greg Sorber of Team Penske clinched third place overall after placing third in two consecutive chicanes this season. At the beginning of the year, Sorber was adamant about making his mark, stating, “It’s time for me to step up. I’ve watched enough guys take home the big checks, and now it’s my turn.” Sorber was a man of his word. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

n any sport, potential doesn’t always live up to the hype. It gets media excited, fans curious and coaches or team owners salivating. But all it really does is put a young athlete on the radar screen. Living up to the potential, however, is a whole other ballgame. Winston Churchill said, “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.” And therein lies the answer to success or failure. Can an athlete – or, really, anyone – match his or her potential with the same level of effort? NASCAR has seen its share of potential stars over the years. Some made it, and some didn’t. In no particular order, here are a few NASCAR drivers that just might be worth keeping an eye on. And hey, if they live up to the potential, we can say we knew it all along. Just like we were saying back in the ’90s with Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson, right?

Blaney, who drives for Brad Keselowski Racing in the Camping World Truck series, currently sits third overall, with one win and 12 top-10 finishes this year. Along with competing in the complete Truck series, Blaney is competing in 15 Nationwide series races and hopes to exceed his results of 2013, where he won a race and had three top-10 finishes in only three races. son at just 20 years, 1 day. Happy birthday! Let’s just say expectations were a bit high for Bayne after that historic win and it came with a few struggles. It looks like Bayne is starting to settle down again. Driving for Roush-Fenway Racing, he’s currently sixth in the Nationwide series (as of this writing) and has nine races with Wood Brothers Racing under his belt in the Sprint Cup series. Bayne’s talent is undeniable, so if he can settle in with a team, we should be hearing his name associated with winning races again. P H OT

Admittedly, Stenhouse is already wrapping up his second full season on NASCAR’s top-tier circuit, which puts him far ahead of most of the drivers on this list. Yet, driving the No. 17 for Roush-Fenway Racing, Stenhouse is just 27 and still has a lot of racing to go in his career. irector and writer Vince Gilligan walked away from the 2014 Emmy Awards with his second award for “Breaking Bad,” the critically acclaimed series he created about a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with cancer who starts making and selling methamphetamine. This year’s Emmy wasn’t the first major award Gilligan, who started his television career as a writer for the TV series “The X-Files,” has taken home for “Breaking Bad.” His work has netted him more than 10 awards that include top honors from the Writers, Directors and Producers guilds. His goal now is
D
to recreate that success with his newest series, “Better Call Saul!” a “Breaking Bad” spinoff making its television debut on AMC in February. When “Breaking Bad” wrapped, Gilligan and his creative partner, Peter Gould, began brainstorming ideas for a new series. They considered every possibility. Should it take place after “Breaking Bad” ends or before it began? Should it bend more toward comedy or drama? “What we have come up with is a show that is surprisingly dramatic,” Gilligan says. There were quite a few “Breaking Bad” characters that could have carried the new show but the first name to pop
up was criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, portrayed in “Breaking Bad” by actor Bob Odenkirk. “He is an actor we love working with,” Gilligan says. “We wanted to keep that relationship.” Saul is not representative of the legal profession “in any way,” Gilligan adds. “He is his own man. He’s a guy we wanted to spend more time figuring out.” An opportunist and a bit of a rascal, Saul is a “likable ambulance chaser,” Gilligan says. “He’s kind of heroic in that cockeyed sense. He makes his own way.” Gilligan knows all about making your own way. He has always been one to challenge conventional thinking. He

From left, Bob Odenkirk, Peter Gould, and Vince Gilligan on the set of “Better Call Saul!” grew up in the small, rural town of Farmville, Virginia. His mother, Gail, a former art teacher, recognized both his curiosity and creativity when he was young. “He would create spaceships and robots. He’d dig down in the Dumpster and pull out components from computers,” she says. “He was always an artist in that respect.” She also noticed his penchant for storytelling and writing out his thoughts – a trait he got from his mom. In school he studied both creative writing and visual arts. His interest in film production was the byproduct of late nights in front of the television watching old movies with his dad. One of his teachers, Jackie Wall, would lend him her Super 8 camera during summer breaks so he could hone his technical skills. “That is what got me my start and stoked my interest in moviemaking,” Gilligan says. “I feel like I

was always interested in creating, drawing, sculpting and making movies. I loved that feeling of creating something out of nothing.” His talent was obvious even when he was in his early teens. “All of us in the family thought he was going to be a visual artist of some kind,” his mom says. “Later we thought he would be connected to animation because of his interest in film and pixilation.” After Gilligan went to New York University’s film school, his mom realized that it would probably be his writing skills that would get him into Hollywood, not his filmmaking. “One of his English teachers at NYU said that Vince knew more about writing than he did,” she recalls. “Better Call Saul!” writer Tom Schnauz, whose credits include “Breaking Bad,” met
Gilligan at NYU in 1986. The two would trade scripts they were writing so they could critique each other’s work. One of the first things Schnauz noticed about Gilligan was his offbeat sense of humor. “He does things a little differently,” Schnauz says. “He liked to take chances. For example, in one of his early films he hooked himself to a car and let the car drive off.” Soon after Gilligan graduated from NYU, he heard about the Virginia Governor’s Screenwriting Competition. He entered his script “Home Fries” and won. One of the pivotal moments for Gilligan in that competition was meeting one of the judges, producer Mark Johnson, known best for “Rain Man” and “The Notebook.” “He read the script [for “Home Fries”] and liked it and wound up producing it eight or nine years later [in 1998 with Drew Barrymore],” Gilligan says. “We’ve had a lifelong friendship and working relationship.” Johnson recently produced “Breaking Bad” and is now executive producer of “Better Call Saul!” Schnauz isn’t surprised at Gilligan’s success in Hollywood. “I think I knew pretty early on he was going to be successful in some way, writing or cinematography,” he says. “I knew we would make it some way in the world of film but we weren’t thinking about television. We thought we would be filmmakers.” He enjoys working with Gilligan because of his inclusive style of management in the writers room. “He wants all the writers to participate in his story. He’s very democratic,” Schnauz says, adding, “He has incredible taste and knows what makes a great story. His mother raised him well. He wants to be fair and just. He has a real sense of what’s right and what’s wrong. ”

“Breaking Bad” with Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul ran for five seasons and was nominated for more than 200 awards during its run.

Schnauz was first introduced to Gilligan’s sense of right and wrong when the two were in college and wanted to go see “The Late Show with David Letterman.” In order to snag tickets, they had to get to the show very early and stand in line. “Vince got there 10 minutes before I did and in those 10 minutes people lined up behind him,” Schnauz says, adding that he stood by Gilligan to talk to him. About a minute later, Gilligan told him he didn’t believe it was fair to get in front of the people in line that had gotten there before him. “Vince got tickets and when it got to me, they ran out of tickets,” Schnauz says. “I thought Vince got two tickets but he only thought to get one. It was kind of maddening but he has his sense of right and wrong.” Gilligan has a sincere, compassionate bent and that side is often reflected in the characters he creates, such as Jesse Pinkman on “Breaking Bad.” “He had heart,” Gilligan says. “He’s a good person plus he’s a meth cook. I always felt like he shouldn’t have been living that life. His life was ruined.” At the heart of Gilligan’s writing is his desire to understand what
makes each of his characters tick – why they do the things they do. “The interesting thing about writing is when you truly feel like you are doing it right the characters take on a life of their own,” he says, adding that he obsesses over the details of each character’s life. “You have to imagine everything about the character down to the colors they wear and the car they drive; their goals, their hopes, their fears. You have to see every detail, large and small. And I love that there is God in the details and also the devil in the details.” Gilligan’s offbeat style is often the focal point of the writers room. Schnauz recalls a day when Gilligan was using his BB gun to shoot at a target. “He practices that to open up his mind,” Schnauz says. Gilligan put a pushpin in the air gun and asked the writers what they would give him if he shot himself in the leg with the gun. “One of the writers said ‘my undying respect.’ He had to do it after that.” Schnauz likes the fact that Gilligan’s point of view is always original. “He thinks outside the box. He likes to do the unexpected and sur-

They help them find their way; give them enough to find their way. We are blessed to work with amazing actors. Vince picks very good people to work with when he casts an actor. They come in and do the job and do the work.” Gilligan’s success is evident, but anyone talking to him would never know the status he has achieved. He has never been one to relish the spotlight. He is as humble and shy as he was growing up. “He still remains Vince Gilligan, the little boy that likes creating things,” his mom says. He will be the first to admit that he never thought “Breaking Bad” would make it after the first season. “It was a nail-biter at the end of season as to whether we would get picked up,” he says. “The viewer numbers were not that high. If I had known back then how much of a phenomenon it would be, I wouldn’t have believed it. I am in awe of the fact it worked as well as it did. I feel like I won the lottery.” He’s learned over the years not to take anything for granted. “I worry that everything going forward will be a disappointment, but you can’t let fear stop you,” he says.

The ‘Newbie’ BY CHAD BLAKE
I
n the RV world, “newbie” has generally come to mean those venturing out into the world of recreational vehicular camping for the first time. These folks have just taken ownership of their shiny, rustfree, trouble-free, spotless new wheels and cannot wait to get into the joys of RVing. They are elated, typically already have a trip in mind and have no clue of their impending trials. Everything is brand new and should work like a charm, right? Well, not exactly. Welcome, newbie, to the world of the seasoned traveler. You might be picking up a hint that we veterans of many trials and tribulations are ready to mercilessly unload upon the hapless newbie. We can’t wait to let him know that being a newbie is a little like your first day in high school – full of unknown surprises and mystery. We all want a piece of him. He is like a bone to a hungry dog.
32 C H A L L E N G E N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4
We want to share our vast treasure of do’s and don’ts. It seems incumbent upon us to shower the poor newbie with every mishap we’ve ever encountered. To be fair, of course, we are hoping that he never encounters breakdowns or roads to nowhere, especially those that might end with a low-overhead sign painted on a bridge with an 8-foot maximum height posted and no room to turn around. As our acquaintance with the newbie continues, we secretly begin to check the width of his shoulders, wondering just how much more we should add before there is notable sagging and a subtle low moaning emanating from somewhere deep inside him. If we sense no visible signs of collapse, we sometimes get really excited and begin piling on even more bad experiences. It’s almost like a religious cleansing, wherein we
confess all of our past troubles, and thereby rid ourselves of all sins … uh, I mean, past problems. Seriously, though, we’re all “newbies” at certain points in life. In this case, the RV is our focal point and the seasoned traveler knows beyond any doubt that the newbie will soon be paying his dues and that shiny new rig will be offering up its share of both trouble and happiness. Once enough breakdowns, flat tires, lost ways and other events have occurred, a metamorphosis takes place and the “newbie” is no more. He has now evolved into a seasoned traveler and begins scouting for the new kid on the block with a shiny new rig. This new kid, without knowing it, is now the newbie and is about to be properly baptized by our freshly emerged seasoned traveler. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

hat were you thinking when you woke up today? Were you concerned about how to pay the bills or were you appreciative that you had another day on this planet? Maybe you were turning over events from yesterday and hoping the same did not happen to you today? In 2005, you may have seen the movie or read the book “The Secret.” Everyone was talking about this revelation, including Oprah, Larry King, “The Ellen Show” and “The Today Show.” The premise is that you attract what you focus on, day in and day out. It isn’t a new concept. It has been said so many ways and by so many people over the generations. Ever heard of the saying “As a man thinketh in his heart, so shall he be”? James Allen wrote that in his short book, “As a Man Thinketh,” published in 1902. Henry Ford said in the 1920s, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” We attract into our lives the things we think about with focus and emotion. It’s called the law of attraction. Have you ever bought an outfit or car and all of a sudden you see it everywhere? Brain scientists estimate we have approximately 60,000 conscious thoughts during our waking moments, which is just
W
34 C H A L L E N G E N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4
20 percent of what is really going on in our world. More than 80 percent of our brain’s communications are subconscious; what makes our skin grow, our lungs breathe and our heart beat is out of our conscious thought. Want to know what the sad part is? Most of us have the same 60,000 thoughts. And we think we’re on autopilot, as if things just happen to us and we have no control over those thoughts. We know that is untrue. I know without a shadow of a doubt that the law of attraction is in full force in my life and all those I share and care for. Our daily focus and perception yields our reality, like a life filter. Take my six years as a health coach for truck drivers. The drivers that would come back to the terminal, clock out and sit around the break room tables complaining – about their routes, the traffic, the weather, customers, bosses or dispatchers – all seemed to have the same kind of day, week in, week out, year after year. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. They were focusing on all the crap from their day instead of what plans they might have over the weekend with their grandkids. They were telling all those that would listen their woes, and guess what, their focus and emotion was so strong that they attracted
the same thing over and over. And many still do! The drivers that did their job, clocked out and went home to their families were far more happy, healthy and a joy to be around. In fact, I have coached 24 of those drivers into competing in triathlons to this day and all of them thrive. Tommy has lost 90 pounds since learning the power of his focus and so have John, Al, Bret and the rest of the Truckers to Triathletes trucker athletes. They listened to my focus message, watched the movie “The Secret” and gave it a chance. And it worked. Come on, don’t we all have an aunt or uncle or friend that will tell you all the things wrong in his or her life when you make the mistake of saying “How are you today?” We all know that guy or gal or maybe even dozens – the naysayers of the world. I learned long ago from a mentor of mine named John Wooden, the legendary coach of UCLA’s college basketball program that won 11 national championships: “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you CAN do.” So next time you get ready to explain or complain, think about it. Do you want it to happen again? Be deliberate with your daily thoughts and focus, my friends. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

in a rut by brenda potts
ovember is the primary month for Midwest whitetails to engage in their mating cycle, often called the rut. What phase of rut they are in at any given point during this month is widely debated among hunters and biologists. Talk to hunters or watch outdoor shows in November and you will hear a plethora of terms. “Early stages of pre-rut,” “peak rut,” “lockdown,” and “post rut” are all terms used to describe the activity of deer during their mating season. How this phase of the breeding cycle came to be called “rut” is a bit confusing, since a rut can be defined as “a habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change.” During phases of the rut, whether it is pre-rut, rut or post-rut, deer are anything but dull and unproductive. Bucks are on the move at this time of year more than any other and may lose an estimated 25 percent of their body weight. Their behavior is often
N
38 C H A L L E N G E N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4
unpredictable, changing with a whim and a whiff of estrus in the air. The origin of the word “rut” comes from old French (rute) and English (route), which were combined in the late 16th century into rut. The Latin origins are from rugire, which means to roar. Stags roar and elk bugle. Both are in the same family (cervid) as our whitetailed deer. This origin provides some sense as to how the deer mating cycle came to be called rut. Catch a cruising buck searching for an estrus doe during this time of year and he will be more susceptible to the allure of rattling antlers and grunt calls than at any other time. Combine these techniques with a decoy and the results can be spectacular. We have had our decoys blasted into pieces by the attack of a rutting buck determined to destroy a rival. I have hastily repaired them with duct tape and spray paint and returned to the hunt, only to have them attacked again before the paint dried.
When bucks are in a rut phase they have one thing on their mind. I once watched two bucks fight over an estrus doe, knocking down small trees and tearing up the hillside as they battled for half an hour just out of bow range. Big bucks seem to be able to pinpoint the location of rattling and calling within just a few feet of the source. I have had bucks come running and skid to a halt at the base of my tree, searching for the sounds of the mock fight. While I was guiding two hunters in western Illinois a few years ago, one of them had fallen into his own rut phase, taking naps in the middle of the day during the peak of the rut. My other hunter stayed in the tree all day. Which one got the big buck? Well, it wasn’t the napper. No matter what you call it, if your deer are in a rut phase, it’s time to be in the field hunting.

Infrastructure Still
by mike howe
Find Mike online on Twitter: @TruckingDC and Facebook: TruckingPoliticsMore
t’s a slow news day in Washington, D.C.; what will the politicians talk about? The plight of the less fortunate, the jobless, or some developing nation that needs assistance can make for good headlines. Or politicians can always talk about the goto issues of the economy or health care to grab a headline. Rarely, though, do issues such as infrastructure improvement catch the eye of prominent media, so rarely do politicians go after that topic. That is, unless it’s near the end of another Congressional session. How interesting is it that infrastructure issues, the very issues that the trucking industry and America rely on so heavily, are addressed almost always at the end of the biennial Congress. That’s the case again with the Generating Renewal, Opportunity, and Work with Accelerated Mobility, Efficiency, and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America Act (the Grow America Act). It is a $302 billion, four-year transportation reauthorization proposal from the U.S. Department of Transportation (i.e., Obama administration). What’s even more interesting is that this proposal was developed after Congress approved a short-term extension of the current highway bill. Instead of working to address the issue head on, both Congress and the administration extended funding for a short term, and then proposed a long-term bill that everyone knows will not make it through this Congress given the short period of time left and this month’s elections. It’s likely, however, that the DOT will move to push this or a similar proposal through the next Congress, which begins in January 2015. Understanding that, what does the Grow America Act offer? According to DOT, it includes:
I
• •
42 C H A L L E N G E N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4
$199 billion to invest in our nation’s highway system and road safety, in- creasing the amount of highway funds by an average of about 22 percent above FY 2014 enacted levels $7 billion for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Fed- eral Motor Carrier Safety Administra- tion to improve safety
• • • • •
$10 billion for a multimodal freight pro- gram that strengthens America’s ex- ports and trade $10 billion over four years to establish a new multimodal freight grant program $19 billion in dedicated funding for rail programs $5 billion over four years - an increase of more than 100 percent - for the highly successfully TIGER competitive grant program and $4 billion embed- ded in the highway and transit re- quests for a competitive grant pro- gram called Fixing and Accelerating Surface Transportation $4 billion to attract private investment in transportation infrastructure
There’s little doubt the administration has identified infrastructure improvements as a priority, and will likely attempt to keep the issue on the table. In September, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the U.S. Department of Transportation even held an Infrastructure Investment Summit to highlight the needs. “When we make investments in our infrastructure, we see multiple dividends. In the short-term, we help create good, middle-class jobs that cannot be outsourced, ignite business activity, and spur local economic development,” says Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew. “And in the long-term, we help lay a foundation for a future that is brighter, stronger, and more prosperous.” It will be interesting to watch as the administration navigates the crises around the globe, continued pressures on health care, the national debt, a slow economic recovery, and its desire to place infrastructure as a priority. Sometime this month, a working group led by the U.S. Department of Treasury and the DOT will make recommendations on how to expand private sector involvement and about how to better raise awareness with the public. Sadly, this is about the same time the 2014 elections will be over, this session of Congress will be winding down, and then we get to start all over in 2015. What does this suggest to you about the future of real infrastructure funding? w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

give thanks
istorians debate the date, and the time, of the first Thanksgiving in the American colonies. Most of the textbooks point to a 1621 date in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Pilgrims celebrated a substantial harvest, inviting members of the Native American tribe of Wampanoag. They decided to hold a feast to celebrate, much to the chagrin of several generations of turkeys. I like the 1621 account, not because it is the most accurate or the best documented, but because it tells an American story. The Pilgrims were seeking freedom from oppression. They overcame formidable obstacles. They worked hard. And they won. The year 1621 was a turning point – they were getting the hang of living in the colonies without starving. The Wampanoag helped, and not just by bringing the cranberry sauce to the feast. The
Wampanoag already knew how to live in the colonies. George Washington proclaimed the first national day of thanksgiving in 1789. Still recovering from a long war with the British for our independence, we had more to give thanks for than the invention of the red pop-up thermometer that lets us know when our turkey is done cooking. We were free of British rule. Celebrating Thanksgiving has evolved over the last few years with the advent of social media. During each day of November you find something that makes you thankful, then you post it online. Since you are not allowed to repeat an item, you tend to be pretty creative by the end of the month. Like: Today I am thankful that my cat coughed up a 3 a.m. hairball on the linoleum instead of on the carpet. People are looking for what makes them grateful instead of things to complain about.

I had a thought about a spin on this healthy activity. In addition to finding what makes us get thankful, maybe we can emulate the Wampanoag by finding ways to make others thankful – to give thankfulness. Every day we can find a way to make someone else thankful, then we can brag about it on Facebook or Twitter. Oh, wait, I mean we can post our actions to give our friends ideas on ways to bless others. We can put our wife’s 97 decorative pillows on after we make the bed. We can let someone merge into traffic, even if he seems rude. We can do the dishes out of turn. We can send out a card to a friend or relative. We can volunteer at a local charity. If a caller interrupts our dinner asking for a political donation, we can let her talk for 10 seconds, instead of the traditional 6. You get the idea. Now go give thanks.
