by greg girard was hoping in my career as an editor I would never have to write one of these columns, but here I am nonetheless, writing the final editor’s note for a magazine – an unenviable experience, to say the least. As I write this, I can hear the staff of Challenge outside my office working on this final issue as diligently as if it were the first. Brad Beard, our one and only graphics editor, has designed every Challenge Magazine. He’s made the cover story spread you see in every issue a signature of the magazine’s style and, truly, Challenge would not be what it is today without his vision. Anne Huberth, our intrepid accounts manager and another stalwart of the magazine for nearly a decade, has worked to fill the pages of Challenge with some of the best-looking advertisements in the industry. Her high standards made Challenge a must publication for advertisers targeting the trucking industry. Amanda Jakl, our assistant editor for the past four years, propelled Challenge into the social media world, lending an online voice not only to our magazine but to the entire industry on issues impacting trucking. Jennifer Kirby, with her encyclopedic knowledge of the AP stylebook, has made sure each issue was clear of grammatical errors. Our writers, from Joan Tupponce’s many cover stories to Claire B. Lang’s insider’s look at NASCAR, have made Challenge Magazine a publication synonymous with unmatched commentary and stories that engaged and inspired our diverse readership. And, finally, Kathy Virtue, publisher and creator of Challenge Magazine. When this idea was first germinating in her mind, she already had a name that succinctly epitomized this world of trucking. The transportation industry is many things, but no one will dispute that it is first and foremost a challenge. Kathy’s vision evolved into a publication that touched every person and aspect of the transportation community. We’ve had a good run here at Challenge Magazine. We started in 2005 and we end just on the cusp of 2015. Not too bad, even if all of us feel it could have been much longer. Through nearly 10 years of entertaining the millions of drivers that keep this country moving forward 24/7/365, through 110 issues offering insights on sports, entertainment, health and transportation, and through countless stories on the joys and hardships of the trucking life, we stayed true to our goal of providing an engaging respite from the open road. We will always be proud of that. It’s been my sincere pleasure writing for all of you. Thank you for your trust and your loyalty. And, as always, safe driving.

SHORT

RUNS Brought to you by:

A Closer Look: Interstate Highway System

We’ve come a long way since the National Road of 1811 that connected Maryland and Illinois. It wasn’t until the Great Depression that the idea of a national road system was seriously considered. President Roosevelt saw it as another cog in his New Deal initiative to create jobs. At first, the thought was to create a toll-road system but it was deemed unrealistic due to lack of traffic. Progress in the system was slow, and then World War II came along, so it wasn’t until President Eisenhower, in 1956, that the “National System of Interstate and Defense Highways” bill was created, proposing a 41,000-mile system of roads across the country. Let’s take a closer look at the system that made trucking the influential industry it is today. The initial motivation behind the highway system was nuclear war, with the idea that the roads would make evacuation from targeted cities easier. Eisenhower was influenced by the efficient German Autobahn system during WWII. The longest interstate route is Boston to Seattle on Interstate 90, stretching 3,020.54 miles. The shortest? Interstate 97, from Annapolis, Maryland, to Baltimore at 17.62 miles. Interstate 95 runs through 16 states, from Maine to Florida, the most in the highway system. Five state capitals are not connected to the highway system – Juneau, Alaska; Dover, Delaware; Jefferson City, Missouri; Carson City, Nevada; and Pierre, South Dakota. The total number of miles of the Interstate Highway System is just under 47,000.

BY THE NUMBERS: WINTER SOLSTICE The word solstice comes from the Latin “sol” (sun) and “sistere” (to stand still), due to the sun virtually stopping its seasonal path before reversing direction. In Ireland, a tomb called Newgrange was constructed around 3,200 B.C. (more than 1,000 years before Stonehenge and 500 years before the Pyramids at Giza), and remarkably, every winter solstice, a beam of light shines through a “roof box” near the entrance reaching the floor of the tomb and gradually extending to the back of the tomb’s chamber. Here are a few numbers on the winter solstice of our time.

Depression Statistics indicate that up to 20 percent of truck drivers deal with some level of depression. Considering the work environment, that isn’t too surprising. Poor diet, lack of sleep and isolation can all lead to depression. Adding to this environment are the holidays, which we all know increase the risk of depression, especially for those away from family and friends. Symptoms of depression can include: • • • •

Feelings of sadness or worthlessness Loss of interest in life and normal activities Tiredness Irritability

• • • •

Anxiety Trouble thinking and concentrating Frequent thoughts of death Unexplained physical ailments

Everybody gets down now and again, but if these symptoms persist, it’s time to get help, whether for yourself or someone you know. For more information on depression, visit faceitfoundation.org.

farewell by greg girard

he year 2005 doesn’t seem all that long ago until you start to recall some of the events that took place halfway through the first decade of the 21st century. George W. Bush was president, Pope John Paul II died, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf region, the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah’s couch, “Million Dollar Baby” won the Academy Award for best picture and “American Idol” had taken over America. Challenge Magazine started in 2005 too – an idea by Kathy Virtue, the publisher, that was intended to give something back to the professional truck driver. I sat down with Kathy as

T

we began to prepare our final issue, and she shared her thoughts on Challenge, the transportation industry and her fondest memories over the past 10 years.

What kind of impact do you think Challenge Magazine had? The impact of Challenge Magazine is something I’ve thought long and hard about. I don’t know that I knew the impact when it was created. I didn’t see how deep those waters would go. But I have talked to so many truck drivers out on the road and at the Driver Appreciation Tour or Truck Driver Challenge and they’ve talked to me about how much they love the magazine. I’m

always hearing how well it’s written, that they love the variety of stories we share and how often our stories took them to a place they never thought they would go. One of my favorite things a driver ever shared with me was from a letter he sent to me. It was a letter to the publisher, and it said, “Not much of a golf fan, never been to a country club, but read your Tiger Woods story and I felt like I was at the Masters with you. Felt like I understood Tiger better too. Loved that it was written through Tiger’s truck driver’s eyes. If he ever needs another driver, I’m available.” It was neat for me to hear from a truck driver who would not have thought about himself as a golfer or

golf fan or a Tiger Woods fan, but he picked up Challenge, read it and we took him somewhere that he never would have gone. He didn’t know about the Nike rig, he didn’t know about Tiger’s eight hours of practice a day. He didn’t know about all that. It’s just been great for me to hear that.

A story can change a life, right?

Publisher Kathy Virtue with the first issue of Challenge Magazine hot off the presses.

w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Absolutely. This year, I had a reader write to me and say, “I always read your ‘Healthy Choices’ section and in one issue I learned about the signs of diabetes. And I actually went home and told my wife, yikes, I have a couple of those signs. She made me go in for an appointment and sure enough I had Type 1 diabetes and didn’t know it.” That brought tears to my eyes, that some guy said, hey, I was reading your magazine and it saved my life. He isn’t spending time reading a health and fitness magazine. He isn’t hanging out at the doctor’s office. He was reading Challenge. I also loved that so many people felt it was a value that Pilot gave them because they thought so much for the professional truck driver. In their mind, they knew Pilot was responsible for providing that

magazine. And it was such a thank you. It was a way of saying we just want to give you something that’s about you, for you. Something just to make your life a little easier, and in a time where people and companies rarely do that anymore. I think it was very much appreciated. And then this year, I had a conversation with Maverick Transportation and she said, “Well, we’re going to renew Challenge, full page again. We’ve been with you since issue No. 1; the finest recruits we get come from Challenge Magazine.” They’ve been with us since the first issue and they’re still with us 10 years later. So, that’s the impact I didn’t know we’d have. To save a life, to take someone somewhere they normally wouldn’t go, to make people want to take photos from the road and share them in our Garmin Gallery, to help with recruiting quality drivers. It’s just been amazing to me to see it become bigger than I ever dreamed it would be.

What was the dream initially? What was the vision? Oddly enough, I was at Pilot with Mark Hazelwood and Jimmy Haslam and we were visiting fleets to talk about how we could help them recruit drivers. There was a driver shortage 10 years ago, just

We’ve had many covers – 110 to be exact – and all of us in the office have our favorites. Most often, our favorites mesh with yours, although every once in a while we get surprised. After nearly a decade, we’ve pulled out the cover stories that garnered the most feedback. Medal of Honor – This issue, which ran in May 2012, was the most sought-after issue in the history of the magazine. Not only for the striking cover and layout, but also for the story behind the cover, highlighting the history of the Medal of Honor and sharing the story of Medal of Honor recipient Joe Marm. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Junior has graced the cover four times, the most of anyone, and each time the request for additional copies goes up at the office. Our last cover with Junior was in August 2012, as part of a NASCAR mid-season review story. It was ideal timing for us, as he had just broken a winless drought of 143 races, winning at Michigan International Speedway, his first since June 2008. Since then, Junior has been a more familiar face in victory lane and we like to think we had something to do with that. Women in Country – Most of country music’s female stars have graced the cover of Challenge over the years. From Sara Evans and Reba McIntyre to Dolly Parton and Miranda Lambert, all have been popular. Jo Dee Messina was our first country star, in June 2006, but there are two that garnered a more noticeable increase in responses from our readers: Gretchen Wilson and Kellie Pickler. The original “Redneck Woman,” Wilson was on the cover in July 2011 with a story by Joan Tupponce that highlighted her rise to fame since her No. 1 single hit the airwaves in 2004. Country’s “Gypsy Redneck,” Pickler graced our cover in April 2012 and her rags to riches story, a la Dolly Parton, hit home with many of our readers. NASCAR – OK, we admit, we never seemed to satisfy our readers’ appetite for NASCAR stories. Although we can attest that every editorial meeting we had, NASCAR was the first topic on the agenda. It didn’t seem to matter. The calls kept coming in … more NASCAR. From dirt tracks and safety issues to highlighting every champion, we did our best to meet your demands. Just seems like it was never enough. Football – Put aside, for a moment, our readers’ insatiable appetite for NASCAR; by far, the second most in-demand sport was football. Quarterbacks tended to dominate our covers, but we did find time to highlight two teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys. Interestingly, regardless of the player on the cover, we received more mail from fans of that player’s rival teams than from fans of the player’s team. What does that say about football fans? Trick My Truck – “Trick My Truck” ran for five seasons on CMT, and we made them the cover story in October 2006, just as their second season started. Basically, the boys from the Chrome Shop Mafia would surprise truck drivers with a complete tractor makeover. As you might expect, the show was a major hit with our readers, all hoping they would be lucky enough to get picked.

as there is today, and I went along to hear how I could help in some way. All I did was listen as we went from one big trucking company to the next. And when we got back on the airplane, I said to Mark, I’m going to tell you what you need, you need a magazine that’s kind of the Sports Illustrated, USA Today, transportation magazine that’s full of coupons, updates readers on the growth of Pilot and entertains. I said the magazine can be Pilot’s mouthpiece. You’ve got 10,000 items in your stores, there’s the advertising, and you’re building more stores every year, so we should have a directory. So from that airplane talk, I came back home, created Challenge Magazine, flew back to Knoxville, presented it to Pilot and they said go for it. And I don’t think they even knew how cool it was going to be. And it ended up being pretty cool.

What were the challenges over the 10 years?

No real negatives, you know, because the good comes with the bad. We had magazines so chock full of ads that we had to add pages and then in 2008, during the recession, we had to take some away. We were very much a reflection of what was happening in the trucking industry and the economy as a whole. So I really kind of took that on the chin. You have to endure the bad times to enjoy the good, and the staff here have been very faithful. We had the same graphics editor for all 110 issues, the same national accounts manager for eight years, fabulous editors, great writers … it’s just been a fun ride.

Is there a memory that really sticks out?

I’ll tell you the day it hit me. I was on an airplane, this was maybe five years ago. I was in my seat and I could see up the aisle, five or six seats, there was a guy in a suit, and he was clearly a businessman, and he was reading Challenge Magazine. I went up and pretended I was using the restroom, and stopped next to him and said I read Challenge Magazine too. And he said, great magazine. I’m in the transportation industry and this is a must-read. And that tickled me to death to be on an airplane and see someone reading Challenge. Another thing is just how many cool people we’ve had on the cover and that I’ve even had an opportunity to interview. I think of just the litany of people I talked to or interviewed that said they could drive a truck – Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a CDL, Toby Keith has a CDL. There are so many people that said, oh, my dad was a truck driver, my brother is a truck driver, I have a CDL. Just how deep the roots of trucking are in America is something I was privy to.

What would you like to say to the readers on this last issue?

Just the privilege, what an overwhelming privilege it has been to provide something for the folks in an industry I think is so incredibly hard. We named it right. Challenge was the right name for this magazine. The industry is challenging, the job is challenging, to get through a year safely, that’s challenging. To be on the weight scales perfect every time is challenging. To get your load delivered on time, that’s challenging. Everything about a driver’s lifestyle is just a huge challenge to me. So it’s been a privilege to provide for a group of people who I have an enormous amount of respect for – a publication that I was very, very proud of. And I hope they will remember it fondly for many years. And I’d like to thank Pilot Flying J for allowing us to distribute there and being our partners. They’re a fine company and I’ve been proud to have their marks on the cover.

s Henry Ford said, “Auto racing began five minutes after the second car was built.” It didn’t matter if it was two hotheads racing down an abandoned straightaway or a group of hotheads racing around a dirt track, the popularity of a sport derived from speed just kept growing. By the end of World War II, Bill France Sr., a car repair shop owner and avid racer, had been organizing races around Daytona Beach, Florida, for nearly a decade. France experienced first-hand the frustrations race promoters faced in organizing events, so he suggested a meeting to discuss the creation of a sanctioning body. Soon after, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was born. Its first sanctioned race came on Feb. 15, 1948. Since then, the number of great moments in NASCAR can and have filled a book. If we could have a flashing dis-

claimer light on this page, it would be blinding you right now. Debate reigns with experts, fans and NASCAR itself as to the sport’s top defining moments. We’re here to happily add fuel to the fire. Here are our top six … now feel free to debate among yourselves.

Pass in the Grass

What’s now known as the All-Star Challenge race started out as The Winston, and what made it immediately desirable for the drivers was the rather large prize money that came with the win – $200,000 in the 1980s compared to an average winning prize of just more than $50,000 for the other races. So it’s not surprising that the “Intimidator,” Dale Earnhardt Sr., and

the other top drivers would be gunning for the checkered flag in the 1987 Winston at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Earnhardt was on fire coming into the race, having won six out of the first nine races that season. Bill Elliot, Earne’s Moto r Spe

hardt’s main rival, was also in top form, having won the Daytona 500 to start the 1987 season. The race came down to the two of them. In the final segment, Earnhardt and Elliot jockeyed for the lead, with Elliot’s pass attempts being aggressively blocked by Earnhardt. Heading into turn four, with seven laps to go, Elliot’s car tapped Earnhardt’s Chevrolet, sending Earnhardt’s car onto the infield grass. Somehow, Earnhardt managed to keep control of his car, get back onto the track, swerve in front of Elliot and maintain his lead. There wasn’t a racing expert that could explain the feat. Earnhardt went on to win the race. While Earnhardt didn’t technically pass anyone, the move went down in NASCAR lore as “The Pass in the Grass.” Elliot’s reaction after the face: “If a man has to run over you to beat you, it’s time for this stuff to stop. What he did wasn’t right. When a man pulls over and lets you by and then tries to run you into the wall, I’d say that was done deliberately. If somebody doesn’t do something about this, we’re coming back next week and we’ll see what happens.” Earnhardt’s response: “This whole deal is between me and Bill, and it has nothing to do with our teams. We knocked each other around, but it’s all over now as far as I am concerned. But if Bill still wants to do something about it, then I’ll stand flat-footed with him any day.” Classic Intimidator.

Six Pack

The modern era of NASCAR has two names at the top of the list: Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Gordon’s Rainbow Warrior defined the ’90s; Johnson has owned the 2000s. Last year’s championship gave him the coveted “Six Pack” of NASCAR championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013). Only two drivers in NASCAR history have won more: Petty and Earnhardt, both with seven each. Pretty good company, and the fact that Johnson is only 39 offers the real possibility that he

27. He won 10 consecutive races that year and went on to be the first NASCAR driver to earn six figures ($130,275) for the season. Then, just 17 years later, Petty recorded his 200th career win. No. 2 on the list of wins in NASCAR history is David Pearson, with 105. Jeff Gordon, the closest active driver, has 92 (as of this writing). Records are made to be broken, but some never will be. The King will reign forever. Long live The King.

Winston Sponsorship

Right place, right time. There’s something to that when it comes to NASCAR’s sponsorship history. Early in NASCAR, sponsorships were dealt with at the local level, and the pressure was on for promoters and owners to continue replenishing their sponsorship deals each year. While that part hasn’t changed, it’s now done on a much grander scale. As the sport’s popularity grew in the 1960s, national corporations, including R.J. Reynolds, started to take notice and began sponsoring select events. Then in 1971, R.J. Reynolds committed to sponsoring the entire series, and the Winston Cup would reign in NASCAR for 33 years. As for that timing, it helped NASCAR that the U.S. ban of cigarette advertising on TV took effect the same year, and so R.J. Reynolds had an enormous marketing budget to spread around. The R.J. Reynolds commitment to NASCAR opened the floodgates for other national accounts to partner with the racing sport.

The Fight

While fighting in NASCAR is nothing new, before 1979, those within the sport and diehard fans were the only ones that knew about driver and team feuds. Capitalizing on a new agreement with CBS, the Daytona 500 was to be televised in its entirety for the first time. And helping NASCAR move closer to center stage, a convenient, and major, snowstorm on the East Coast had millions snowed in and ready to watch. NASCAR delivered. Donnie Allison was in the lead on the final lap, with Cale Yarborough close behind. Yarborough attempted to pass on the backstretch, while Allison moved over to block, pushing Yarborough into the grass. Neither driver gave in. Yarborough pushed back and they eventually crashed against the outside wall. Petty, nearly half a lap back, cruised to one of his 200 wins. Tempers were already high, as Yarborough had collided with Allison and his brother Bobby earlier in the race. After the crash, Bobby pulled over to offer his brother a ride back to the garage, but Yarborough wasn’t finished with The Brothers Allison; an argument broke out and then helmets, legs and arms started swinging in all directions. The national audience ate it up, and it even made the front page of The New York Times.

This is often considered the race that propelled NASCAR into the national spotlight and put racing on the map as a major American sport.

Feb. 18, 2001

Even 13 years later, the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. casts a shadow over the sport. NASCAR has moved on, but it will never forget. He lost control, was hit by Ken Schrader’s car and slammed nose first into the wall. “TV does not do that crash justice,” Darrell Waltrip said after watching the replay. “That is incredible impact. Those are the kinds of accidents that are absolutely frightening.” The next day, NASCAR’s Mike Helton announced, “We’ve lost Dale Earnhardt.” “In reaction to Dale Earnhardt’s death, I think

NASCAR rethought how they managed safety,” Dr. Robert Hubbard said in an ESPN interview 10 years after Earnhardt’s death. “And they’ve become very proactive.” NASCAR has since focused heavily on driver safety, from protective seats to head restraints to “soft walls” that absorb impact.

set out on the road living in my Winnebago as a full-time workamper in May 2007. For me, it was and continues to be my dream come true … traveling the country and making a living at jobs along the way. This dream life entailed selling my house, giving away all my furniture, walking away from my career, saying goodbye to family and friends, and in short, learning a brand new way of life. In the beginning, I was naïve and unprepared. I fell down quite a few times. But I got up just one more time than I fell, and that has made all the difference. Money never mattered in my decisions. If it did, I would never have gone from the mountains and valleys of Pennsylvania, the only experience of home I had until I found the open road. This is a contemplative life – one that has evolved out of some sad and lonely but mostly happy and fulfilling times. I have it all ways and always here on the road. My unconventional home, this tin can cabin, has provided me with comfort, mobility and grace. I am still growing into it.

What I’ve learned, so far: •

Carry only what you need and want. Everything else can be found along the way. When first starting out, I thought I needed my own ladder, so I bought

one and carried it over thousands of miles. When I needed to use it to clean my RV, there was someone offering one before I could even get mine out. Once you no longer have a use for something, give it away to someone who does. It is a forced necessity, as storage is a premium factor. I find thrift stores and donate good reusable items, thereby lightening my load and lifting my heart. Stay connected with family. It is so important for your well-being. Regular Skyping, texting, emails and phone calls keep me from singing the blues. Home is a state of heart and mind. This lifestyle makes you into an unintentional conservationist. In my “land” home, I always took hot water for granted; leisurely 15-minute showers were the norm. With a 6-gallon water tank in the RV, I learned fast that having a hot shower from beginning to end takes timing, agility and a shower nozzle with an on-off switch. Now, I take showers in five minutes with hot water to spare. Establish some routines for your new location to be sure that your time there is well spent. folks there are a wealth of information about the area and always give me more than enough to keep me busy adventuring. Pay it forward! Be a volunteer! When circumstances and finances allow, I volunteer my time and labor to various organizations around the country. One year, I helped build a hiking trail around a lake. Several times over the years, I have been a campground host at state parks around the country. My duties included taking care of an entire campground, keeping it clean, trimming trees, helping rangers keep visitors safe and giving out park information. Be grateful for everything that comes your way. Even when you are leaving a wonderful job remember that every ending leads to a new beginning. When one door closes, another door opens.

Recently, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, building a house for a needy family. I helped build interior walls, put up roof trusses and paint doors. My days were long, hot and tiring but seeing a young family get a hand up and a new start gave me immeasurable satisfaction. I feel so rich with the diversity of places to explore, people to meet or reconnect with, and adventures around the next turn in the road. And I continue to count my blessings ... always.

ost road trip gadgets are about convenience. It’s all about how well they pack, how well they transport and how well they work. We’ve come up with a short of list of items everyone should consider before hitting the road and enjoying the great outdoors.

Picnic Time X-Grill Portable Grill - $50

Ever arrive at the campground, take one look at the

rusted grill over the fire pit and start longing for your trusty home grill? The X-Grill, while not the five-burner you may have at home, may just be the solution to that campground dilemma. It’s the ultimate portable charcoal grill that folds up like a beach chair and slides easily into a tote bag. Perfect for camping or tailgating, the X-Grill sets up in about minute and will have you cooking those hot dogs and burgers before you’re hooked up for the night. Cleans up well, too, with just a mild detergent.

Thermacell bug repellent - $32

If the bugs drive you crazy but you want to avoid breathing in the citronella smell or spraying your skin with repellent, make the switch to the Thermacell Mosquito Repellent Lantern. The camping lantern, which also comes in a more elegant patio version, repels mosquitoes, black flies and more within a 15-by-15 area. Odorless and flameless, the lantern’s secret is a synthetic copy of a natural repellent found in chrysanthemums. Each repellent mat placed in the lantern lasts up to four hours, and refills are available for around $6 a pack. And don’t forget to use the lantern.

Origami Storage Box - $25

Collapsible and easy to store, the Origami Storage Boxes are there

when you need them. They’re lightweight, easy to transport, and come in three sizes. The RVers we talked to have used them as a laundry basket, cooler and tool chest. The most attractive feature, however, is its collapsibility when not in use: It doesn’t take up space until you need it. Fair warning: Only the large container has a lid.

Ambient Weather Alert Radio - $40

Essential for any emergency kit, the Ambient Weather Alert Radio is a multi-purpose device that’s worth the investment. With digital AM/ FM NOAA weather alert capabilities, the radio is also a flashlight and a five-way charger – USB, AC, DC, hand-crank and solar (some chargers are optional). In fact, in direct sunlight, the radio will charge its lithiumion battery continuously. Use the crank for one minute and get 20 minutes of power. Its rubberized edges make it sturdy and dependable for almost any activity, and it’s small enough to fit into a purse or small pack, allowing you to take it almost anywhere. Safety is never a bad investment, and this radio will keep you tuned in to weather emergencies in your area.

salt

by linda mcgirr

Linda McGirr is a Registered Dietitian and certified Dietitian-Nutritionist

alt is a staple pantry item in most households in the U.S. Right now, I have six kinds of salt in my house. I have the regular iodized table salt in a familiar round box. I have two kinds of French sea salt – one finely ground into small crystals that pours easily and one in large crystals that I hardly ever use. Then there is the bright white flaked salt from English saltwater marshland that is perfect on a slice of fresh tomato. Last, there are two kinds of Hawaiian sea salt – one black and one pink that I put in little bowls and set out on the table when my foodie friends come over. Because I tend to go easy on the salt for health reasons, all this salt will probably last me at least a decade. Why, you might ask, would a dietitian have so much salt in the house when it is constantly being said that too much salt is not good for you? Good question. Let’s look at what salt is all about.

S

38 C H A L L E N G E D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4

What is salt?

Salt is a natural mineral compound made up of white cube-shaped crystals composed of two elements, sodium and chloride. Salt is made up of 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. There are several different types of salt to choose from. Each has various properties and textures but ultimately, they all have a similar content of sodium and chloride. Here are some of the differences. Table salt is typically mined from underground salt deposits. This salt is processed to eliminate other minerals and elements. Table salt usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. This is the type of salt that is typically used in salt shakers, since it is free-flowing and won’t get lumpy. Most table salt is iodized salt, which means that iodine has been added. Iodine is an essential mineral that the body needs in very small amounts to maintain a healthy thyroid. Iodine is not produced in the body,

so by adding it to salt, most people can get enough, even if they use only a small amount of salt. Evaporating water from the ocean or other salt-water bodies produces sea salt. There is little processing involved, so trace minerals and other elements remain in the salt after evaporation. These minerals add different colors and flavors to the sea salt depending on which body of water they come from. They also come in a variety of textures. Kosher salt is a coarse, grain salt from earth or sea that chefs recommend tossing on everything from meat to popcorn. It adds crunch to foods and may or may not have anti-clumping additives. Kosher salt got its name because it is perfect for curing meat, which is a step in the koshering process. Lite salt is usually part sodium chloride and part potassium chloride. The “lite” means it’s light on sodium. This may be recommended for some people who need to follow a low-sodium diet. Potassium may interact with certain blood pressure medications, however, so you should always ask your medical professional before switching to lite salt. Seasoned salt is salt with added herbs and spices. Since there is less sodium chloride in it to make room for the other flavorings, there will be less sodium in it overall.

Why use salt?

Salt is used mostly to bring out the flavor of foods in cooking, but there are other uses as well. • Salt was used to preserve foods before there was refrigeration. Salt draws the water out of foods and inhibits growth of bacteria, yeast and mold, and therefore prevents food spoilage. • Salt affects the texture of some foods. Breads, for example, that contain salt have a finer texture than breads made without salt. • Salt controls fermentation of certain foods such as cheese, bread dough and sauerkraut. • Salt stabilizes and increases the vol ume of beaten egg whites and whipped cream. • Salt is used in pickling vegetables and to preserve them in canning.

Salt and Health

The two components of salt, sodium and chloride, are essential for human health. Sodium has a role in controlling blood pressure and blood volume, and is needed for your muscles and nerves to work properly. Studies show that there is a direct link between high blood pressure (hypertension) and sodium intake. Hypertension is a major risk w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Strategies to get your sodium intake on track

Americans consume, on average, 3,200 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day. The recommended allowance for an adult is no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day. factor for heart disease and stroke. Chloride has a role in digestion, nerve function and regulation of cell fluids. Chloride may also have a link to blood pressure regulation, but more study is needed. Sodium gets the majority of attention when it comes to dietary recommendations. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), Americans consume, on average, 3,200 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day. The recommendation of the AHA is for adults to consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day. This recommendation is

40 C H A L L E N G E D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4

supported by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which is the national organization for Registered Dietitians. Keep in mind that one teaspoon of salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium. Sodium occurs naturally in foods to a certain degree, but most of Americans’ sodium intake comes from eating processed foods and restaurant meals. Only 13 percent of sodium intake is from salt being added at the table or in cooking. It’s easy to see why most Americans exceed the recommendations: It’s hard not to.

The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has several suggestions to help reduce your sodium intake: • Use less salt in cooking. Skip the salt in preparing pasta, rice, cereals and vegetables. • Taste your food before adding salt at the table, and use it only when needed, rather than as a habit. • Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, which are naturally low in sodium. • Use herbs, spices and fruit juices as alternatives to salt in cooking for added flavor with less sodium. • Look at the food labels for terms such as reduced salt or sodium, low-sodium or sodium-free. • Choose fresher foods rather than processed foods to dramatically cut the amount of sodium in your diet. So choose and use your salt wisely. If you like fancy salts, use them in moderation to enhance your food experience. Don’t use salt when you don’t have to, but don’t skimp if it will affect the outcome of your hard work at food preparation. And as always, go by what your doctor tells you. If you need to cut down, there are plenty of other seasonings to choose from. Experiment and enjoy!

hings you might not know about what it’s like to cover NASCAR.

T

Don’t ask me if I have a favorite driver

When people hear I’m a beat reporter on the NASCAR circuit they ask if I have a favorite driver. I don’t. All drivers have their strengths and weaknesses because, breaking news here: They are human. I enjoy covering all sides. Jeff Gordon is classy and clever, Dale Junior is the real deal, Kyle Busch is nicer than non-Busch fans would think, Brad Keselowski is kinder than folks know. I could go on.

You want my job?

My job is ridiculously interesting. If you want to hang in my shoes, though, you leave home Thursday and return Monday – maybe Tuesday if there’s a rain delay, as there are often news conferences on Tuesday to cover. I’m like many truck drivers, but I hang out at airport gates and on planes instead of on the open road. Yes, I am “lucky” to have a job like this because it took more than 25 years of hard work and 100 percent dedication to get here. Of course, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

The Media Center “deadline room”

Not everyone is part of the deadline room media. Those are the media corps members who ask questions during news conferences and cover the garage beat. When I started, it was a rite of passage to get scrutiny from the curmudgeonly newspaper writers until

42 C H A L L E N G E D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4

you earned your place in the deadline room. It took years to earn a way in. I have great admiration for the credible journalists of the group who tell and don’t inflate the story. The deadline room is where you’ll find some whom I respect greatly.

Drivers who won’t talk after incidents

I am always chasing down stories and interviews – but when a driver simply doesn’t want to talk, I won’t chase him to the motor coach lot. Some say these drivers are paid to talk, but it’s not required, unless they finish in the top three. There are actually very few times when, if asked a question in the right way, a driver won’t respond with respect. A lack of response often reveals how upset he or she is. Solution: Interview someone else who could use the exposure.

Driver fights – I’ve been there

The competition executives used to joke that if there was a fight on the track, as they pulled team members off the pile they’d find me at the bottom with my microphone running. True, that! I’ve been knocked down during a NASCAR fight. Not really surprising, considering all the arms and elbows flying when team members are pulling folks back from a fight. It just happened that my nose was there waiting. I’m very careful to stay out of the way, cover my face, and not get hurt while still trying to cover the action. So far, so good.

NASCAR fixed? WHAT?

I’ve been covering this sport for as long as I can remember and I am always there on the inside with my eyes wide open. No, it is not

fixed. NASCAR doesn’t care who wins the race, they care about parity – and they can be ruthless in enforcing their rules. Sure, there are strike balls called. Do I always agree with their decisions? No. But, while our sport is unique, based on mechanics and more than just the athlete, it’s a sport that plays out live before our eyes every week and the outcome is a surprise to everyone.

Don’t believe everything you read

Stories with headlines ending in question marks are usually not firm facts. Some websites get daily reports as to how many of you click in, and so they write to get clicks rather than to be credible. Every story should include an attempt to contact both sides. If it’s one-sided and contains neither a “no comment” nor a comment from other side … it’s not credible. Reader beware.

My mug on TV

There is protocol in covering NASCAR. The live TV and radio networks broadcasting the race go first, then the pack on pit road or victory lane. You see me waiting my turn, and when the live broadcasts are done, I swoop in for my questions. I try to avoid the cameras — a feat not always possible. One time, a live network TV crew changed direction and went in for an interview, so I turned to back out and, bam, I full-faced a camera lens that projected my mug the size of a big screen. Oops. It’s a pleasure covering the sport for all of you. Wherever the NASCAR caravan unloads coast to coast, you can bet I’ll be there with my recorder!

seasons by brenda potts

n most of North America we go through four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Each season has its good and bad points. We have seasons because the earth’s axis (an imaginary pole through the center of the earth) doesn’t run straight up and down. The planet rotates on an axis that leans slightly. As it orbits around the sun different parts of Earth get the sun’s direct rays. (Are you trying to remember your high school science?) It is winter in the northern hemisphere when the South Pole is tilted toward the sun. During the winter solstice the tilt away from the sun is maximized, reducing the amount of sunlight that is reaching us. Around our house, the four seasons are turkey, bass, elk and deer. Our lives revolve around hunting and fishing seasons, with schedules planned according to the seasonal movement of the sun and moon, and the mating seasons of the wildlife we pursue.

I

44 C H A L L E N G E D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Since the grandkids started getting old enough to hunt, youth-only hunting seasons have become my favorite time of year. Introducing kids to the outdoors is so gratifying, and always fun. Plus it keeps you young as you see the natural world through their eyes. In the non-hunting seasons we have “show season.” It’s when we attend trade shows and consumer events and spend time in the studios creating the television shows we filmed during the previous hunting and fishing seasons. Mother Nature’s seasons can be glorious and cruel. Things bloom, things die, things go dormant and then are reborn. The animals we hunt and fish have been going through seasonal cycles for centuries. It gives you a sense of normalcy, but also a sense of your own mortality. Life is seasonal. When you live seasonally it seems to make time go by faster. This has its good

and bad points. We may be sad when one season comes to an end, but happy to begin the next. As seasons change, new directions emerge. We have been blessed to share our love of the outdoors through magazines, DVDs, television and social media. Hopefully something we experienced and shared inspired someone else to get outdoors, to try hunting or fishing or at least start to understand it. When people experience the outdoors firsthand they begin to care about it, become stewards of conservation, and pass along a legacy we cannot afford to lose. It has been my pleasure to share stories with you in the “Gettin’ Outdoors” column for many years, but sadly this will now come to an end. My work will continue through our company, Legacy Trails Media. I want to thank the good folks at Challenge Magazine for this experience and wish you, the readers, many happy seasons to come. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Good News, More of the Same, and Goodbye by mike howe Find Mike online on Twitter: @TruckingDC and Facebook: TruckingPoliticsMore

s this column comes to an end, it’s only appropriate to share a worthwhile policy endeavor while also emphasizing the struggles related to infrastructure needs. The “lame duck” session of Congress has done little to alleviate the concerns of how to fund significant transportation infrastructure needs, and as we look forward to the new Congress we probably shouldn’t expect anything different. The one thing that is certain is that as our economy grows there remains a high demand for qualified truck drivers. Let’s just hope we get some infrastructure improvements soon. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently announced an effort to help train new drivers while helping veterans at the same time. In October, FMCSA awarded $1 million in grants to nine “technical and community colleges across the country to help train returning military veterans for jobs as commercial bus and truck drivers.” “Those that we entrust to protect and serve our nation deserve opportunities that utilize the skills and training they received on the job on military bases overseas and at home,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “We can think of none more appropriate to safeguard our highways as commercial vehicle drivers than the thousands of veterans who have already proven they can safely handle large vehicles under extremely stressful circumstances.”

A

These new training opportunities come on the heels of FMCSA’s July 2014 Military Skills Test Waiver Program that essentially allows states to waive the skills test portion of the CDL process for military personal who have two years of military truck-driving experience. This, coupled with the funding for training, should help find new drivers and help our American heroes who need a job. As for the roads these drivers will run on, that is another issue entirely. Congress and the administration have continually kicked the proverbial can down the road for longterm funding bills. There have been grants (TIGER, for example) and short-term funding, but the long-term solutions have largely been ignored. I don’t think that will change anytime soon. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has been working to find the best way to utilize public-private partnerships (P3) to address infrastructure needs. The one positive aspect of this is that the committee acknowledges the tremendous need. Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) said, “We know the private sector has significant interest in investing in U.S. infrastructure, but the challenge has been how to make sure our federal policies allow this potential to be responsibly unlocked while also protecting the public interest.” Committee Vice Chairman John Duncan (R-TN), who chaired a special P3 Committee, said, “Billions of dollars of infrastructure

needs in the U.S. are in search of funding, and well-executed public-private partnerships can enhance the delivery and management of infrastructure. P3s cannot provide the sole solution to all of the nation’s infrastructure needs, but they can offer significant benefits, particularly for high-cost, technically complex projects that otherwise may risk dying on the vine.” Congressman Nick Rahall (D-WV) said, “While P3s remain an important, limited option for certain projects, this report makes clear that they are no silver bullet when it comes to our infrastructure funding challenges, and that continued federal investment in our highway and transit systems is needed.” The House committee has committed to using the report from this P3 Committee to guide future legislation. Sadly, though, reports like this, unless acted on right away, tend to collect dust and are only occasionally referred to. Perhaps this time it’s different. I have written for this publication since the first issue, and have always attempted to offer differing points of view while bringing you relevant information and important issues to consider. I encourage you to remain engaged and informed as policies, legislation and regulations continue to evolve and impact you on a daily basis. I will continue to write and comment via my blog (www.PolitiTruck.com) and social media, and hope you will find me there. Be safe, and thank you – I admire and respect you! w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

a recipe for entertainment

ake four to seven family members who are not used to spending time together, and pack them tightly into a vehicle with an assortment of suitcases, presents, and maybe a pet or two. Sprinkle in a few electronic devices and some road munchies. Allow to simmer for 10 to 20 hours on the way to Grandma’s house for Christmas. Observe the frazzled results. Best enjoyed just before exploding. I like people-watching any time of year. Truckers have an unobstructed view into other people’s worlds as they drive past us. Holiday travelers are fun to watch because they are not used to driving long distances. Everyone is excited at the beginning of the trip: young couples holding hands, talking and planning expressively; kids looking out the windows with wonder, trying to get the truckers to honk; Moms passing out neat sandwiches and napkins for everyone. Later in the trip, the kids are wrestling in the back seat, the teenagers are looking disdain-

ful, and the passenger seat molds people into sleeping positions that could cause permanent disabilities. Nerves get frayed and personalities clash. Parents take swipes at smart-alecky kids who are just out of reach in the back seat. Siblings stomp away from each other as soon as the car comes to a stop in a rest area. Then, just as everyone gets into the groove, singing songs together or trying to finish the abandoned game of license-plate bingo, it is time to get excited again because “We’re almost there!” I have enjoyed the annual show for years. As a way to give back to my neighbors on the road, I would like to share some friendly advice I have picked up over the years. Perhaps it will benefit those who have had less time out here. • The shoulder of the interstate is not the safest place for a potty break, an emergency diaper change or a run back to the cooler for a soda. Your terrier can make it to the next Wendy’s or rest area. Probably.

• Entrance ramps are not for unwrapping your burger and grabbing some French fries. If you wait until the last second to glance to the left, you may see a tractor-trailer next to you. • When you stop at a Pilot Flying J: 1/3 pumpkin spice cappuccino and 2/3 pumpkin spice coffee. Trust me. • The words “left lane closed ahead” should never be interpreted as “wanna race?” • Those luggage racks that fit into your trailer hitch receiver look very sturdy, but when you are designing the small city you plan to build back there, remember that they put signal lights on the back of your vehicle for a reason. If other drivers can see your brake lights and turn signals, we can tell when you are heading to the shoulder for a potty break. Remember, among all the chaos, traffic and Doritos crunched into the floor mats, that this is a season about finding peace. Wherever you are headed, enjoy the journey.
