o find the origin of the phrase “resting on one’s laurels,” we must go back to the Greeks, who considered laurel wreaths symbols of triumph and high status. The Greeks began presenting laurel wreaths to winners of the Pythian Games, precursor to the Olympic Games, and the idea was inherited by subsequent empires and ages through the centuries. Even today, we have poet laureates and “baccalaureate” degrees. As the phrase evolved, “resting on one’s laurels” became an expression of respect, like a soldier, after fulfilling his duty to country, retires to rest on his good deeds. Eventually, though, the phrase came to have a negative connotation or a warning, with the idea that one should not stop striving after initial success. I’m reminded of this phrase when I think of our cover story (Page 22) on Eric Church. Following the stratospheric success of his last album, “Chief,” not many would blame Church for riding those coat tails as long as he can. Yeah, well, not in the cards for Church. “It was time for us to up our game,” he says, describing the genesis of his fourth album, “The Outsiders.” “This record is what we’ve been trying to do all along. We’ve gotten close before, but this is the first one where we’ve really been able to just go for it and take it to the next level. We went into this with the feeling of ‘You haven’t really seen what we’re capable of yet; now we can really do some stuff.’” I often get a kick out of reading song descriptions released by record companies – it usually involves a fever-induced explosion of adjectives and compound modifiers. Here’s the description of Church’s latest album: “That yin/yang balance established by those two tracks (the title track and ‘A Man Who Was Going to Die Young’) sets the anything-goes tone for an unpredictable sonic excursion that encompasses such far-ranging creations as the rollicking, tongue-in-cheek ‘Cold One,’ the groove-intensive epics ‘Roller Coaster Ride’ and ‘Broke Record, ’ the sensitive, bittersweet ‘Talladega’ and ‘Give Me Back My Hometown,’ the organ-driven classic soul ballad ‘Like A Wrecking Ball,’ the rowdy, swaggering ‘That’s Damn Rock & Roll’ and the slyly evocative story-song ‘The Joint.’” I could add to that, I guess, but I think I’ll just recommend you listen to it. Church has said there are no boundaries in music and he proves it in his latest effort. It also bodes well for the future. Unconventional, driven and immensely creative, it appears the last thing we’ll ever see is Church resting on a bed of leaves. Safe driving.

It was your lead story on Mr. Gary Sinise, a man I was privileged to meet on a couple of different occasions due to the fact that we both volunteer to assist with the annual Snowball Express event for the benefit of children and spouses of our fallen heroes. Mr. Sinise’s contribution is huge, and greatly appreciated by the families as well as the volunteers. And, as described in your article, he always seems to have time to talk to the family members and volunteers. A class act, all the more inspiring given his “paid” profession. Gary Sinise is an American of whom we can all be proud.

Driver Safety

I’ve been driving for more than 36 years. Over the years many things have changed; however, the one constant that shouldn’t change is our obligation to the safety of the driving public and, of course, ourselves. The pre-trip and post-trip inspections have, in my opinion, gone by the wayside. It’s the driver’s job to make sure his or her vehicle is road-ready. Somehow drivers don’t care about this anymore. A mere 47 years old, the DOT has been the catalyst for improving America’s travel conditions while also, at times, being a source of frustration for America’s drivers. Let’s take a closer look at the department concerned with how America moves. Within the department there are 12 agencies, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These agencies cover all the major forms of transportation: air, maritime, highway and rail. The 2014 DOT budget was $77.2 billion, of which $41 billion was budgeted to the Federal Highway Administration. While the formation of the DOT is new, the idea is not. The first legislation that established the DOT was introduced 92 years before it passed. Bureaucracy at its best. The first highway program pre-dated the invention of the automobile. In 1806, President Jefferson ordered the construction of the National Road, connecting Ohio to the Eastern seaboard. DOT regulates commercial space travel under the FAA, not NASA. NASA is a research-and-development agency. Because the railway system needed time standards for shipments, the DOT was assigned to oversee the nation’s time zones and the states’ daylight saving time compliance.

n 2013, the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series raced a combined total of 30,152 miles. Meanwhile, Champion Tire and Wheel’s fleet of trucks logged nearly 2 million miles supporting the nation’s top three stock car series. Located in Cornelius, North Carolina, Champion Tire and Wheel is NASCAR’s one-stop shop when it comes to “toting the load.” And according to Todd Carpenter, company general manager, it starts with hauling

just about everything a NASCAR team needs throughout the course of a race weekend. “We’ve got 32 tractor-trailers on the road, 29 of them on a full-time basis depending on the equipment requirements,” Carpenter explains. “If all three NASCAR divisions are running at that same track on a single weekend, that’s four trucks of nothing but bare wheels going to the track. We also have trucks that deliver pit boxes, crash carts, generators, fan carts to cool down the tires for mock qualifying runs, engine cool-

down units, cooking grills, tire carts and nitrogen carts. We pretty much deliver everything that doesn’t fit on a team’s hauler. The real challenge is to keep our trucks under the maximum weight of 80,000 pounds.” So if Champion Tire and Wheel is transporting everything but the kitchen sink to the track each week, exactly what do NASCAR team haulers deliver to the racetrack besides the racecars? “Teams still fill up their haulers with carts that they interchange with parts specific to the race that week,”

says Carpenter. “Stuff like shocks, springs, toolboxes, things that rotate and change from track to track. Those are items that they need flexibility on. Their team haulers are still full, they’re just full of items that they need. Those items that have changed quite a bit over the years, which has led to more opportunity for us.” Initially, Champion Tire and Wheel’s core business was transporting Goodyear racing tires to and from the track. That business eventually grew to also providing transport of all the wheels teams use – which led to a massive expansion into race tire dismounting and recycling – as well as the development of a technologically advanced wheel cleaning, inspection, maintenance and warehousing enterprise. Want cutting-edge? Here’s how Carpenter described Champion’s racing wheel advanced quality assurance program. “We have a high-definition camera mounted on a robot that measures each lug hole every week,” he says. “The camera measures both the minimum and maximum diameter of each lug hole to see if there is a difference. If the difference exceeds a maximum tolerance, the wheel gets rotated out of service. Camera technology has improved to the point that we can look at all five lug holes at one time. That’s really sped up the inspection process and eliminated a bottle-

It’s also improved the quality of the wheel inspection services we provide to the teams and, ultimately, the safety of the wheels they run.” Champion collects all the used tires and wheels at the end of a race and transports them back to North Carolina. There, the tires are dismounted and disposed of while

the wheels are trundled along a massive conveyor system and through Champion’s wheel-washing station. Again, the dismounting, conveyor and washing systems have been updated regularly to provide the best quality assurance parameters demanded by NASCAR’s high-performance requirements.

“NASCAR teams and crew chiefs don’t need to be worrying about the wheels,” says Carpenter. “As far as they are concerned, they are good every time. We’ve continued to improve our conveyor system, our wash system, we’ve even improved our handling systems to reduce handling and keep the wheels from hitting each other. The conveyor system even routes the wheels to a re-check lane every six events where we can inspect it for quality and defects. We’re very serious about providing the best product available to the teams.” “We evolved all this technology to do this,” adds Champion Tire and Wheel owner Kevin Mahl. “We put some science to the project. We continue to invest in our business every year. We invest in quality assurance equipment every year and, of course, in trucks and trailers. We do everything we can to keep things at the standard they need to be. It really fits with our philosophy that what we bring to the racetrack is race-ready – ready to bolt on to the racecars and perform at a high level.” This season, Champion Tire and Wheel has added yet another item to the list of services it provides NASCAR: transport of the Air Titan track-drying system. “We currently have six flatbeds that haul NASCAR’s Air Titan 1 track-drying

We did that part-time last year and this year the Air Titan system is going to every track. We used it at both Daytona and Phoenix. It was amazing to see it work. We also partnered with NASCAR to set up and tear down all of their templates and scales, so we stay pretty busy at the racetrack each weekend.” Despite all of its newfound business and responsibilities, the heart of Champion Tire and Wheel continues to be its fleet of trucks – and the 75 or so full- and part-time employees who work for the company. When asked what is the biggest challenge in keeping Champion Tire and Wheel’s fleet of trucks criss-crossing the country over the 10-month NASCAR tour, Mahl is quick to respond. “Paying the fuel bill,” he says. “We keep a close eye on it. We spend over $1 million a year on fuel, so it’s an important line item for us. Our on-the-road logistics manager plots out where the Pilot and Flying J’s are across the country and the fuel stops for our trucks. We do our fuel exclusively at Pilot Flying J and it has to be an unusual circumstance for us to purchase it anywhere else.” Despite the logistical, technological, financial and ultimately human challenges of running Champion Tire and Wheel’s business, Wahl knows the end game for his company is providing flawless service to the most popular form of motorsports in the country today. “We’ve been fortunate to have worked with NASCAR all these years,” says Wahl. “Our guys are professional. They go in and get the job done. NASCAR doesn’t have to worry about it. They know they are going to get the same quality job every week. We realize the importance of what we do. The show is not going to stop because we didn’t make it that day.”

ric Church isn’t hurting for attention these days. He’s been talked about in the pages of big-ticket publications like Rolling Stone, SPIN and The New York Times. His fourth LP, “The Outsiders,” is one of the year’s best-reviewed albums, with folks falling all over themselves to praise its combination of hard-nosed grit and sensitive introspection. And perhaps most importantly, he’s racking up the kind of airplay and album sales that befit a superstar: “The Outsiders” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and its last two singles, “Give Me Back My Hometown” and “Cold One,” are unavoidable on country radio. While no one talking about Church and his music denies his

obvious talent as a songwriter and singer, all too often the narrative gets stuck in one groove like a skipping record: that the 37-year-old is the ultimate bad boy, thumbing his nose at the country music establishment as he rides his songs of hard partying and hard rock to the top of the heap. There is some truth buried within that story – he does have a penchant for Jack Daniels, is known for his pro-marijuana anthems like “I’m Getting Stoned,” and was booted off a tour opening for Rascal Flatts for playing a little too loud and a little too long – but it comes at the expense of the simple fact that Church is one of the hardest working musicians around.

When his last album, 2011’s “Chief,” took off like it did (four top-10 singles and over 1 million copies sold), he responded with a small amount of pride, but mostly with the understanding that he’d have to do much better the next time. “‘Chief’ was such a big success, we had to make sure we had enough content for the next album that we couldn’t make ‘Chief Part Two,’” Church says, speaking from his home just outside of Nashville. “We just focused and took more time. The nice thing about that success is that we could take a little more time to write without having to rush right back out on the road. And we gave ourselves plenty of roads to go down creatively.”

He and his cadre of songwriting buddies and musicians knocked together 121 songs that they could choose from. By the time they had pared it down to the dozen tracks that would make up “The Outsiders,” Church and co. were obviously ready to challenge themselves and their listeners. The album is pure country through and through, but throughout, it threatens to take some sharp left turns. “Cold One” starts off with the dobro and acoustic guitar quiet of a Lyle Lovett ballad before shifting into a James Gang-like groove cut up with bits of modern pop production. “Devil, Devil” goes through a number of changes over the course of its eight minutes, with a dark spoken-word intro giving way to hard-rock stomp. And Church and his band pay homage to less-than-country artists like Nirvana and The Clash in the appropriately titled “That’s Damn Rock & Roll.” “I’m one of those folks that believes that genres are gone,” Church says. “If you’re a 20-year-old kid these days, you’re listening to everything. And I think it’s healthy for music. It allows for more discoveries. There aren’t confines to play by, like if you don’t have an electric guitar, it’s not rock. Country

music is about stories and songwriting. It doesn’t matter what you use sonically to bring that song out, it will still be country music.” That brand of musical adventurousness has helped Church find a much wider audience than most other country artists. He has played at both Lollapalooza, the indie rock-leaning event that happens every year in Chicago, and Orion Music + More, a festival organized by Metallica. But as his age might reveal, getting the attention of the country music tastemakers was an uphill battle early on. The story of Church’s early days is a fairly typical one. He grew up in Granite Falls, a North Carolina town with a population of just under 5,000 where, as he puts it, “everybody knows everybody else’s business.” “While you’re there, it’s a maddening thing,” he says, “but it’s something that you eventually start to see how important that was, that sense of responsibility to each other. Granite Falls provided a really great foundation for me, with family, faith, and community. All those things a small town has and all the things I’ve leaned on since I left.” Though he had a knack for songwriting, he tucked that in his back

pocket for a long time, trying his hand more at playing popular covers in bars and clubs at home and when he left to attend Appalachian State University. “The whole time I was there,” Church says of his college days, “I was basically playing in a band five nights a week. My grades were really bad.” Once graduated (he studied marketing), he made the “necessary step,” as he puts it, of moving to Music City, with hopes of getting his own music heard. With it, though, he experienced his first bout of serious culture shock. “It’s such a cutthroat environment and such an astronomically difficult thing to undertake,” he says. “You get 1,000 people a day coming to town with a guitar and a dream. To throw yourself in at that level is eye-opening. But when you’re young and in your early 20s, you think you can do anything. That sense of foolishness helped me. Had I known what I was up against, knowing how difficult this journey was going to be, I might not have done it.” Church did manage to distinguish himself from among a few thousand other struggling artists and songwriters hoping for a big break, getting signed to a publishing deal with Sony after having been there three years. And it

couldn’t have come at a better time. “I was near the end of my rope,” he remembers. “I was working as a telemarketer on the graveyard shift from midnight to 7 or 8 in the morning, and trying to take meetings to get my music career going in some direction the entire time. It’s a difficult thing to get told no every day and told to go home every day and people that you know getting the breaks you thought you would get. This town is set up to test you, to put you through those things to weed out the people that wouldn’t make it anyway. There’s a lot of sideways movement, but movement is movement. You’ve just got to keep moving.” From there, Church started slowly staking his claim in the breadbasket of country music. He scored a couple of writing credits around ’05, helping write “Whiskey Wings,” a slow-burning ballad that wound up on Dean Miller’s album “Platinum,” and Terri Clark’s swinging single “I Think the World Needs a Drink.” It took a little longer for Church to be able to work on his own music. Though he had a publishing and production deal, labels were hesitant to sign him, feeling that he didn’t have his sound yet. It wasn’t until he connected

with producer Jay Joyce and, together, they found a sound that fit Church’s strongwilled and driven personality that he was able to net a record deal. His 2006 debut album, “Sinners Like Me,” did find a friendly audience in the country music world, hitting the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and having three singles that cracked the top 20, as well as netting him his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. As great as that was, he really cemented his place in country music lore when he went on tour opening for Rascal Flatts in 2006. Being the opening act, Church and his band were constantly pressured to not upstage the headliners by keeping the volume lower and staying off of their elaborate stage set. Frustrated after a week of being hemmed in, he let loose at a show at Madison Square Garden, playing a lot louder and longer than usual, and moving all over the stage. It was one hell of a statement, and one that got him promptly kicked off the tour. From there, Church’s career train has kept picking up speed. He sold over 500,000 copies of his second album, “Carolina,” and added momentum with his raucous live shows. By the time “Chief” was released, this star exploded. The album hit the top of both the country charts and the pop charts, with the singles “Springsteen” and “Drink

in My Hand” also hitting No. 1. Then came his own headlining tours, multiple awards from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, and the American Country Awards, as well as snapping up his first Grammy nominations. Amid it all, he has kept his head down and kept plowing forward, doing show after show while striving to write better and better songs. “It goes back to those days in Granite Falls,” Church says. “You learn a work ethic growing up in a place like that. You must work. We’ve been fortunate to take off more time this year from touring, but before that, we were playing close to 300 dates a year. But that’s important. So when you get to that place where you can go, ‘Wow, we’re having some success,’ it’s because you did that. It has really made us better artists and performers.” There’s a chance for Church and his longtime backing band to get even better as they plan on spending the better part of the next 12 months circling the globe on a massive tour. He’s understandably excited about hitting the road, but even more so when he knows he will have his wife and son with him every step of the way. “You’ve got to take them with you,” he says. “Being involved and being present is 99.999 percent of what keeps families togeth-

er. You’ve got to stay together and do things together. When our son was born, we were in the middle of our first headlining arena tour. He doesn’t remember that, of course. I think will it be fun for him to play around in the arenas and be hanging out. I’m really looking forward to that.” Looking into the next year and beyond, Church doesn’t make any predictions. Mostly, he’d prefer to talk about how thankful he is to be in the rare position that he is in. And to acknowledge that, for all the benefits that have come with being a crossover success story, he’s not going to rest on his laurels when it comes time to get into the studio again. “Our path has been a rough one,” he says. “We had a hard time with radio and with the label at every part of our career. Sure, we won Album of the Year, but two years before that, we couldn’t even get in an awards show. We’ve certainly had a different path, but look at the journey and look at the decisions we made. We gained success on our own terms. We put out all these songs that challenged what people really thought country music could be. We’ve tried to stay left of center, but that is getting very comfortable. That could become the status quo. It’s the middle that scares me. We’ve got to get back to that edge.”

Our Best RV Journey … Ever BY Chad Blake

ike most RV travelers, I’ve experienced many awesome trips over the years. In talking with fellow RVers, I’ve heard endless stories about their “best journey ever,” and concluded that myriad trips can touch an RVer’s soul in some way. I am no exception. Just one look at the souvenir pins on our RV wall (170, plus or minus) and I’m quickly reminded of the many places, emotions and adventures spent with family and friends – all unique and special in their own way. I wondered, is it possible for me to pick a “best” journey out of all these memories? As a retired engineer, I was always pretty good at math, so I thought, why not try to answer this perplexing question by forming some sort of equation? A dangerous proposition, as engineers “must” have an answer. I suppose it’s in the genes.

An equation usually has variables, both known and unknown, and constants, like pi, and an end result. Without trying to emulate Einstein, I kept the equation as simple as possible. I tried to place power to variables like emotion, beauty and the uniqueness of the trip. The equation I started with looked a little like this: Best trip ever = 170(emotion) + beauty2 + uniqueness. The first cut at solving the equation was fairly easy, as there were a good number of pins that didn’t meet the variable requirements, so I discarded them. That should have made arriving at an answer easier, right? Not so fast. I decided that my equation still had too many variables. I hated to eliminate any of them and since I had arbitrarily squared beauty, which gave it much more power, I decided to eliminate

uniqueness, leaving only emotion and beauty as the variables. I thought I was getting somewhere. Wrong again. In fact, trying to eliminate emotion or beauty from my equation only made the equation more difficult to solve. Erasing how I felt when first seeing places like Zion, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Pacific Ocean shoreline or the giant Sequoias is on par with trying to erase the emotion of seeing my children born. Not possible. By this time people, emotions, places and reflections seemed to be running together and were impossible to separate. The engineer in me still wanted an answer, but after more contemplation, I trashed the whole idea of an equation, realizing there’s only one possible answer. The “best” journeys are infinite.

What does relax mean to you?

As the PDA or iPhone or Android, or whatever you call your device, dictates your every action, reaction and stimulation, we need to unplug now more than ever. Because most of the stress we experience starts in our minds and with our thoughts and actions. So not taking intelligent steps to understand that most of the stress we experience is self-imposed is something of a death sentence. Doctors of all specialties believe that 80 percent of all visits are based on some form of stress – either mental, physical, or environmental. So how do we relax? elax, don’t do it.” Remember that song from the late ’80s by Frankie Goes to Hollywood? It’s probably been a busy summer with both family and work commitments. Have you taken a deep breath lately? When was the last time you really relaxed? I mean really ... feet in the sand, lemonade in hand and wound up snugly in a hammock? Or maybe for you it’s your feet in a pond or roasting a marshmallow over a beach campfire or making your granddaughters their first s’mores at the beach, as I did last week. Relaxation means different things to different people. Maybe some of you are thinking, why relax when you can work harder and longer and buy more stuff? Have you ever heard of the saying that you don’t want to be the richest person in the graveyard? Not relaxing enough can drive people to their grave faster than smoking two packs a day.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy: Try not to worry so much. “FEAR” in self-help circles is known as “false events appearing real.” Have Achievable and Realistic Expectations of Yourself: Everybody has strengths and weaknesses; be aware of yours. Don’t Live in the Past: Learning from past mistakes is important. Holding on to past mistakes and letting them dominate the present is stressful. Live life in the present. Don’t dwell on the past. Learn to Say “No”: Don’t let people push you to exhaustion. You are no good to anybody when you are over-stretched and you are likely to become resentful. Exercise Your Body: It’s a well-known fact that exercise, in whatever form, is useful for stress relief and aids relaxation. Exercise Your Mind: Stress can be caused by boredom or under-stimulation of your mind. Learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, or join a local group or society. So “Relax, don’t do it.” What does that mean to you now? To me it means don’t take yourself or life so seriously. It’s all a dress rehearsal. So decide now to take a really deep breath and relax and reflect in the moment. Why? Because you can. Be grateful for that and all the small and beautiful things we have in this country that others do not. While my usual mantra is “Just do anything, consistently,” this time around, I say, “Relax, don’t do it.”

n my early days of bow hunting, I didn’t have much luck with white-tailed deer. After one particularly frustrating evening I came home, threw myself on the couch, and commenced to pout. It just so happened that our good friend Gordon Whittington, editor of North American Whitetail magazine, was staying with us at the time. He and my husband, Stan, were hunting together that week. Upon listening to my pathetic I’m-never-going-totag-a-buck story, they looked at each other and grinned. Over the next hour I could not stop laughing as each one offered story after story of his deer-hunting greenhorn years. Evidently the saying is true, “An expert at anything was once a beginner.” It’s been years since I experienced “buck fever.” It is something that happens to hunters when a big buck steps out, causing them to be unable to draw their bow or perform normal functions. In my case, a doe was the cause of the malady. I was hiding in a hedgerow, well concealed in a big brushy tangle of vegetation, sitting on a stool that put me at eye level with my intended quarry. It was walking slowly along the hedgerow in my direction. In a matter of moments the doe would be broadside at 15 yards with no idea of my presence.

When she stepped into the opening I attempted to draw my bow. But after a summer of practice, shooting thousands of arrows, suddenly I could not draw my bow. I tried and tried as the doe stood looking at me. My bow simply would not draw back no matter how hard I tried. The doe looked at me awhile longer and decided to run off. I examined my bow and could find nothing wrong with it. I tried drawing it once again and pulled it back as smoothly as if I were in my back yard practicing again. My second case of buck fever happened during an elk hunt when I launched an arrow five feet over the back of the elk I was hunting. Thankfully I finally got that animal and haven’t had a case of buck fever since. Several years ago I hunted turkeys in Tennessee with my good friend Brenda Valentine. We weren’t having much luck and had already been severely scolded by her husband. Barney complained that we were worse than a couple of hound dogs with all the ticks we were bringing in the house. He had every right to complain because we were covered in tiny seed ticks each time we returned from the woods. After several attempts to call a turkey in range, Brenda decided to take me on the “Yankee Initiation Hike.” At least that’s

what I accused her of doing as we tromped through the meadows and woods for most of the morning. She just laughed and told me to hurry up because a storm was brewing. Distant thunder rumbled as she finished her sentence. Brenda headed off into what appeared to be a swamp. I followed quickly, having no idea where I was or how to get back to the truck. Thunder rolled again as she said, “Whatever happens, do not step on the orange mud because I buried a horse up to his withers in it one time.” And off she went into the woods. I froze. Orange mud was everywhere. I hadn’t really noticed it before. When a big crack of lighting exploded across the sky I took off running after her, doing my best orange-mud-hopping sprint. I’m glad my greenhorn days are long gone, but I do enjoy taking new hunters afield. They are lots of fun to be around and this new batch of greenhorns do funnier things than I ever did. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Helton at the helm

n a Friday morning in July, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Garage, NASCAR President Mike Helton stood on the third step of the NASCAR hauler to address the formation of the Race Team Alliance (RTA) by the owners of nine multicar teams in NASCAR. The media had packed into the area below the stairs of the big rig on that steamy hot summer morning as the doors slid open and the towering 6-foot-5 figure of Helton stepped outside to speak to waiting cameras and recorders, and journalists armed with pressing questions. Brian France is NASCAR’s leader as chairman and CEO, but for the moment the sport rested on the shoulders of Helton as he delivered the sanctioning body’s message and addressed the reaction of NASCAR to the RTA. NASCAR, he said, would operate as they have in the past, would get feedback from everyone, would deal with individuals and would be in control. Helton is well-known by NASCAR’s fans as the man who presides in the “big hauler” on race weekends. He is the voice of authority – and reason. He is a portrait of popularity, evident whenever he appears in the garage area, taking time to greet fans, sign autographs and pose for photographs. But he can also be a polarizing figure when rulings come down, as fans of specific drivers affected hold him responsible for the decisions of NASCAR. He stands for fairness in the sport, in good times and bad. To casual fans of NASCAR, Helton is best known for delivering some of the most devastating words the sport has ever heard,

“This is understandably one of the toughest announcements we’ve ever had to make. ... After the accident on turn 4 of the Daytona 500, we’ve lost Dale Earnhardt.” This man does not have an easy job. When Helton approaches the microphone in the drivers’ meeting to make an announcement, the room grows silent and everyone takes note because when Helton speaks, folks listen. He’s not a man to back down. On race day, Helton occupies an observation point referred to as “race control,” where he and NASCAR officials observe the events. Rulings are made by this group to maintain fairness in competition and the integrity of the sport. My first recollection of Helton, as a young reporter, was noticing him always watching over the garage from the NASCAR hauler. No matter where I went on my beat reporter rounds, I would look over and there he was outside the hauler, watching. I thought he was keeping an eye on what I was doing. I’m sure there are young crew chiefs and team members who feel the same way as they get started in the sport. In essence, his eyes were on me (they were on all of us) because Helton doesn’t miss much going on in the NASCAR garage. Since then, I have gotten to know him and I wonder how many fans know the real Mike Helton – the man behind the towering presence. Helton assumed his role as the sport’s most visible leader at the racetrack in November 2000 when he succeeded Bill France Jr., who had served as president since 1972. A year prior, Helton had become the first

person outside the France family to take over the day-to-day operations of NASCAR, when he was named senior vice president and chief operating officer. Helton’s motorsports experience is multifaceted. In addition to working for a sanctioning body, during his career he has also been a track operator, and even raced a little himself. “I’ve been an avid fan for 50 years,” he says. I have found Helton easy to talk with or ask questions of and passionate about the sport and his role in keeping it healthy and competitive. Drivers describe Helton as a strong leader who listens, a mediator in disputes between drivers but also very clearly the heavy hand that keeps order if a situation begins to get out of control. He’s always been one to draw the line when forces within the garage begin to stray. As for this new team alliance issue, RTA is referring questions to the group’s appointed spokesman, Rob Kauffman, while NASCAR and ISC are referring Kauffman to their attorneys. Whether face-offs between NASCAR (who says it will continue to operate as it always has) and the RTA owners (who say the organization was formed simply for cost savings) impede the progress of the sport will be much watched and documented moving forward. One thing is for certain: If there are standoffs, Mike Helton will be front and center, keeping watch on the competitors and the garage, delivering messages when need be and holding NASCAR’s firm position in the sand. he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been aggressive in its enforcement of trucking safety regulations over the past several years. This enforcement, including the shutdown of carriers when violations are severe, has arguably become the agency’s top priority. For evidence of the aggressive nature of FMCSA’s enforcement efforts, a simple visit to their website shows most of the top news stories are announcements of successful shutdowns. As such, there is a risk to those companies that hire a carrier to haul their freight, especially if that carrier is about to come under the FMCSA’s microscope. The House introduced a bill, H.R. 4727, in May to help mitigate the risks freight shippers take when hiring a carrier. The legislation itself is very short (two pages) but could have major implications for the transportation industry. Instead of waiting for FMCSA to shut down a carrier or for shippers to wonder how FMCSA might really view a carrier, the legislation would require FMCSA to label a carrier as safe, essentially mandating the agency to make an official determination of which carriers are safe to operate and which are not. FMCSA does have a loose rating system for carriers, but it’s not a definitive ruling. In other words, anytime a shipper sees an FMCSA rating of “satisfactory,” “unsatisfactory” or “conditional,” the rating is irrelevant and the shipper then must make its own best guess on the carrier’s safety rating. While H.R. 4727 might seem reasonable on the face of it, the added administrative and procedural costs to FMCSA, which will likely be passed on to carriers, could be significant. At the time of this writing, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has yet to issue a report on its estimated costs, but because FMCSA claims it does not currently hold the authority to make these determinations, and thus has not been doing so, we can assume the costs would increase if this bill were to pass.

The Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (CBFAA), Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), Network Focused on Business (NFOB), and others support H.R. 4727. Jim Handoush, NFOB CEO, says, “The biggest thing it does for brokers is to remove negligent hiring as a cause of action against a broker in a liability suit. At least, that’s the theory. With the legal lobby and the fact that more than a few lawmakers are lawyers, I suspect they’d have a hard time passing it. Lawyers will still sue deep pockets, but we will simply have a better defense.” The TIA Advocacy website explains why its members should support the legislation. “The national hiring standard would clarify and standardize industry best practices for hiring safe motor carriers. Currently, industry stakeholders are often asked to second-guess the FMCSA on determining which carriers are safe to operate and those that are not.” In all likelihood, however, H.R. 4727 will not pass in 2014. Congress is focused on a short-term transportation funding package – mainly because they can’t or won’t agree to work on a long-term one. It will be a small miracle if Congress can fund highways through 2015, let alone include a small policy bill like H.R. 4727. Perhaps a more reasonable solution is for FMCSA to step up and provide more certainty to the industry. Instead of trumpeting the successful shutdown of unsafe carriers, why not spend more time with industry groups and determine ways to make safety regulations reasonable for all, workable for all, affordable for all, and certain for all? Shippers should not have to second-guess FMCSA, and carriers should not be burdened with increased administrative costs to help FMCSA provide certainty. Certainly real leadership in the administration can develop a collaborative approach that leads to meaningful results. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

The Five Hate Languages

ave you ever noticed marriage books are never advertised in men’s magazines? Women’s magazines are full of advice on how to fix relationships. Men want to fix cars. Women want to know if they are communicating, or bonding. Men want to know the spark gap on a 1979 Chevy big block, or the easiest way to swap out a charge-air cooler. Cindy and I like to read to each other while one of us is driving, and then talk about what we read. We have worked our way through several fiction series, like Jan Karon’s Mitford books and the Anne of Green Gables books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. We’ve also read about 10,000 “relationship” books. Seems like 10,000, anyway. Every couple of years, some new expert comes out with his or her take on how to have a solid marriage. We live in a box the size of a walk-in closet (a truck sleeper), so we need all

the help we can get. I decided to treat relationship books like an owner’s manual. Cindy sees titles like “Love and Respect,” “His Needs ̵ Her Needs,” “Positive Personality Profiles” and “Wild at Heart.” I always see the same title: “Chilton’s for Marriage.” I may never learn enough to do an overhaul, but maybe I could do the relationship equivalent of changing a headlight bulb. We must be doing something right, as people always ask us how we get along so well while driving team. I smile and give them a reading list. A few years ago we read Dr. Gary Chapman’s “The Five Love Languages.” The five love languages are gifts, quality time, acts of service, physical touch and words of affirmation. Apparently, if you are trying to express love, you need to “speak” in a way in which the other person can receive the message. If you express love by giving gifts and your wife’s love language is physical touch, she might wonder why

you are spending money and filling the house with stuff when she wants a hug or a cuddle instead. She might say that she does not feel loved while you are thinking, “But I just bought you the best Peterbilt shirt the truck stop had in stock!” I guess you are supposed to figure out your spouse’s love language, and focus on showing love in a way that makes him or her feel loved. The whole idea got me thinking. What if Clint Eastwood is fighting the bad guys and he wants to express hatred? Does he need to “speak” hate in such a way that the bad guy can properly receive it? What if Clint is using “tough talk” and the bad guy needs a little “physical touch”? What if Clint is using a “nasty scowl” and the bad guy needs “a hail of bullets”? Clint seems to be a good judge of character. He always gets the message across. Maybe he should write a book.
