by greg girard ust before Aaron Rodgers left the University of California to enter the NFL draft, he had a meeting with a professor about an “F” he received on a paper. Now, full disclosure here, it was a course on “food appreciation,” which assuredly attracts athletes like flies to honey. In fact, there were about 10 other football players taking the course, so maybe the professor was a bit tired of jocks using the class as fodder for an “easy A.” In any event, Rodgers went to discuss the paper and ended up receiving a lecture on life. When asked what he wanted to do, he answered, “I want to play in the NFL.” To which the professor laughed and responded, “You’ll never make it to the NFL. You’ll need your education and you’re not going to make it through school here.” Fast forward to the 2005 NFL draft. Rodgers left school after his junior year as a second-team all-academic, and we find him sitting agonizingly alone for hours in the draft “green room,” as team after team looked elsewhere for their first-round draft pick. It wasn’t until the 24th pick, and many awkward shots of Rodgers waiting by his cell phone, that Green Bay picked the NFL quarterback hopeful. In an article by ESPN’s John Clayton after the draft, Rodgers said, “The Lord has been teaching me a lot of humility and patience. He kind of threw both of those in my face today. Good things happen to those who wait.” Well, an NFL MVP award, Super Bowl championship ring and multi-million dollar contract can certainly be deemed “good things.” It would seem motivation is not one of Rodgers’ weak points. Our story on Rodgers (Page 20) looks at what makes an elite NFL athlete keep striving to be the best and the journey Rodgers took to be considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL. Motivation comes in all different forms. For Jeff Clark, it was all about getting back into shape after 30 years of healthy-living avoidance. As a professional driver, he knew the challenges but decided to embrace them rather than use them as an excuse. The result: the Truckin’ Runners Facebook group (Page 16). Now the group boasts runners tackling 100k’s and those just starting out. And during the summer, they raised more than $1,000 for the St. Christopher Fund through mile pledges. Motivation leading to another “good thing.” Safe driving.

A Closer Look: Columbus Day
“In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” is a handy way to remember the year that Christopher Columbus made his famous journey. Unfortunately, that’s usually the only information people remember. Like most events in history, what Columbus was trying to do and what he actually accomplished were two very different things. He was aiming for a new way to Asia – head west, young man! – but landed in the Bahamas instead. That’s a detour we wouldn’t mind taking. He never did get to Asia, by the way. Let’s take a closer look at the man who “discovered” America. Cristoforo Colombo, his real name, was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. Three countries turned down his loan request to fund his journey before Spain signed on the dotted line. England, Portugal and France all said no. The Santa Maria was the only official name of the three boats of the journey. The Nina was nicknamed for its owner, Juan Nino, and the Pinta was sailor slang for “prostitute.” Keep it classy, sailors! If at first you don’t succeed … Columbus returned to the Americas three more times in the decade following his first voyage. He ended up in South and Central America for the return trips. Columbus Day is celebrated on Oct. 13 this month, and became an official federal holiday in 1937 despite having been observed since the 1700s.

t’s only natural that if someone has enough interest to create a Facebook group dedicated to truck drivers who run, he would be a decades-long runner, pounding the pavement every chance he got. Well, Jeff Clark never got that memo. He took a three-decadelong break from running. But it was Clark’s trucking job that led him back into running. A job unloading cases of toilet paper three times a week made him realize he should get into shape to get the job done. Running seemed to be the natural choice. Clark ran track in high school – “I was a 4:40-miler. I was a scrub in my high school” – but admits the 30-year stretch without lacing up took its toll.
I
His first goal back into the realm of running was a sub-30-minute 5k. “I ran it in 30 minutes, 13 seconds.” Not too shabby, but he admits a “little old lady kept passing me,” then adds dryly: “Turned out she won her age group, which was 70 and older.” A slice of humble pie, but the running bug had taken hold. In 2010, Clark helped organize a race, with Carolyn Magner, for Overdrive Magazine at the Great American Truck Show, and to promote the run they created a Facebook page. Growth of the group was limited at first. “In the beginning it was just a couple of us,”
Magner says. “We made it a closed group because we didn’t want it to turn into talking just about trucking as much as talking about the challenges of trying to truck and stay fit.” But eventually they changed the privacy of the group to “public,” allowing membership to really take off. Clark says the growth spurt of the group, which now boasts more than 500 members, has happened in the last year and a half. The group’s description says it all: “Truckers who run. Runners who truck. If you are associated with the trucking industry and want to share training tips, race

information, nutrition, cross-training, books, magazines or running play lists, join us.” Posts by members aren’t limited to just running photos or highlights. Injuries, favorite trails, after-run selfies, races, workout screenshots, favorite gear, even non-running exercises are documented on the group page. And no matter what type of runner you are, there’s a place for a driver in Truckin’ Runners. The group boasts drivers who have been on the road for decades and rookies who have yet to finish their first year of driving; there are runners of all ages, distance, experience and speed. “We got people running 500k’s and we got people who are grinding it out in physical therapy,” says Greg Snow, a member since 2013. “We got members running the Boston Marathon, the Western States 100-miler, triathlons, and we got members walking a mile in 28 minutes, [or] riding a stationary bike for 10 minutes during physical therapy.” In most races, those two types of athletes don’t mix and mingle, but in this Facebook group, egos have been set aside. “There are no ‘elite’ among us,” says Snow. “Everybody has a sincere interest in what everyone is posting. The
spirit of goodwill is definitely apparent. Belonging to this group has always been a very positive experience.” Snow had been driving for five years before he joined the group, and when asked what he gets out of it, he quickly answers, “Encouragement, camaraderie, workout ideas.” And, it turns out, some charitable giving as well. Earlier this year, Snow set out to increase his mileage and try to generate a little excitement in the group. So in midApril, he posted his idea. “All I said was I was going to make a pledge to charity for every mile I walk and run,” he says. And the other members ran with it … literally. In May and June, members of the group secured pledges for the miles they would run, walk and bike during the month of June. Most runners pledged their own money, committing to a certain dollar amount for every mile they completed. Some runners collected pledges from their friends and family. In the end, the group ran 1,050 miles and biked 58 miles, raising $1,354.70 for the trucking charity, St. Christopher Fund. “I am really proud that good came out of it for the less fortunate driver,” says Snow, humbly.

Running helped Greg Snow finish a sprint team triathalon for Truckers2Triathletes. Next up for the group is a virtual 5k, “so that everyone can participate nationwide,” says Jon Narron, member and race organizer. Due to the nature of a truck driver’s schedule, a race with a defined place doesn’t make sense. “I think the idea and intention of having a race event is good, but I know as a driver wanting to go and getting to go are not always the same,” says Narron. “I missed countless events, holidays, and birthdays over the decade I drove because of work. This way, everyone can get on board as long as they have some way to track their progress.”
The 5k is scheduled for Oct. 25. For details, check out the Truckin’ Runners Facebook group page. Everyone is invited to participate, even little old ladies faster than Jeff Clark. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

by mike vandermause ear of failure can be a great motivator, even among elite athletes in professional sports. Just ask Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who acknowledges that even those at the top of their game must learn how to handle it. “I think that is one of the biggest fears that a quarterback or any athlete has to harness,” says Rodgers. “I think it can be a healthy fear or it can be a crippling fear. For me I feel like I’ve been able to harness that for the most part and motivate myself in other ways.” Rodgers hasn’t experienced much failure during an NFL career that has spanned nine years, including the last six as the Packers’ starting quarterback. He has a Super Bowl championship under his belt, earned NFL MVP honors in 2011 and has led the Packers to five consecutive playoff berths and three straight NFC North titles. Along the way Rodgers has produced the best career passer rating (104.9) in NFL history. So why would a player with better individual career statistics than Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Dan Marino even ponder the prospect of failure?
F
It’s because Rodgers takes nothing for granted. He practices as hard in the offseason as he does during a playoff week. He studies and prepares as diligently as anyone in the NFL. No one breaks a huddle more prepared than Rodgers. In his younger years, Rodgers set out to prove himself on the football field every single day. That mindset of not wanting to let anyone down remains embedded in him. “I think it’s grabbing onto those fears and using those as motivation that can really help you,” Rodgers says. “But the biggest thing a quarterback can have, or lack, is confidence, and that’s one thing I’ve never really had a problem with.” While others have doubted Rodgers, he never lost faith in himself or his potential. He has a long memory and has used the comments of critics as a major motivational tool. After his high school career in Chico, California, no Division 1 universities came calling, so he was forced to settle for a junior college stint at Butte College, which he parlayed into an eventual scholarship offer from California. His precipitous fall in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft, from a
potential No. 1 selection all the way to the 24th overall pick by the Packers, was put on painful display for the football world to see on television. Rodgers agonized for hours in the “green room” waiting for his name to be called. He has spent the better part of his NFL career showing countless teams how wrong they were about his NFL prospects. Once in Green Bay, Rodgers dealt with boo-birds unconvinced he could fill the large shoes left by his predecessor, Brett Favre, who served as the superstar and face of the Packers franchise for 16 years. As usual, Rodgers proved the doubters wrong in a big way, leading the Packers to a championship in only his third year as a starter. After overcoming all that adversity and reaching the pinnacle of NFL success, one would think Rodgers has nothing left to prove. But that’s not how he rolls. When Rodgers hears some people refer to him as the best quarterback in the NFL, his first reaction isn’t to conclude he’s finally made it. “I want to prove them right if they say that,” Rodgers says. “Or if they don’t say that, I want to change their mind.”
It’s that obsessive need to please that has helped Rodgers achieve great success. Early in his NFL tenure, his quarterback coach was former Notre Dame signal caller Tom Clements, now the Packers’ offensive coordinator. “I was motivated by not wanting to let him down,” admits Rodgers. Clements is a no-nonsense type who on the surface looks like a hard man to please. But Rodgers won him over quickly. “I don’t think he wants to let anyone down,” says Clements of Rodgers. “He doesn’t want to let himself down, his teammates, the people he works a lot with, the assistant coaches. He cares about his performance and the team’s performance. He’s going to do what he needs to do to get ready and make sure he’s able to perform at a high level.” Rodgers is ultra-competitive and hates to lose at anything, whether it’s football, golf, wiffleball, or a recent Packers’ team-building dodgeball event in which, not surprisingly, his team claimed victory. When he was growing up, Rodgers used to get into knock-down, drag-’em-out battles in a variety of backyard sports with his big brother Luke, 19 months his senior. “He’s hyper-competitive,” says Luke, now 32 and running an online apparel company. “I’m talking about everything. It’s amazing. I am competitive, but Aaron is in
w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m
a whole other stratosphere. … (He’s) very, very, very much a perfectionist, and very self-critical.” The days of Luke being able to beat Rodgers at any sport have passed but the two remain close, with Luke even spending a year living with Rodgers in Green Bay during his rookie season.
He’s never satisfied. He’s only trying to get better. You see that in great players in any league, that personal pride. … It’s kind of what makes them great. – Alex Van Pelt, Green Bay quarterbacks coach “It was a cool time for us,” Luke recalls. “We were both a bunch of young guys. I was 22, maybe turning 23, and Aaron was 21 and owned a house. That kind of stuff was just crazy. We had this big house and we had a couch with no dining room table. We ate on the coffee table all year. He had posters up in his room.”
And in Luke’s eyes, Rodgers hasn’t been spoiled by the fame and fortune that accompanies NFL superstardom. “Aaron’s exactly the same; he doesn’t change,” he says. “His personality is just to be him and I think intentionally he wants to stay and be one of the guys and be himself. To me he’s exactly the same as when we shared a room in high school. He’s still my same stubborn little brother, and my best friend in the world.” That win-at-all-costs mentality serves Rodgers well in preparing for football games. While Favre hated the tedious nature of offseason minicamps and practices, Rodgers embraces that time to make himself better – an attitude that dates back to his college days at Cal under head coach Jeff Tedford, whom Rodgers calls a perfectionist. “We drilled the offense and the scheme and what we’re going to see and the plan so many times, you were so prepared,” recalls Rodgers. “You did not want to let him down because you knew how much he put into it and how much he wanted it.” Rodgers credits Tedford, along with his high school jayvee football coach and freshman football coach, with having the greatest impact early in his career. “(They) really drove me to be successful by challenging me every day and making me prove to them that I was worthy to be
O C T O B E R 2 0 1 4 C H A L L E N G E 23
the starting quarterback and worthy to be trusted with leadership and with the ball in my hands,” Rodgers says. But there’s more to life than football and, away from the gridiron, Rodgers’ father served as a role model for his three sons. “I think my dad had a huge influence on me,” says Rodgers. “We grew up with limited means. I saw the hard work that he put in, the dedication, the fact that through college, I could probably count on one and maybe barely get into a second hand the number of my games he missed. “I played baseball, basketball and soccer until seventh grade, and baseball, basketball and football started in eighth grade. His love for his kids and the way that he loved our mom and then his hard work really made a difference on me and my two brothers as far as how to treat women, what a work ethic looks like, and to have those dreams and what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve those dreams. He had a big impact on me.” Rodgers signed a lucrative contract extension with the Packers in 2013 that pays him in the neighborhood of $20 million per year, the going rate for top NFL quarterbacks. The deal extends

through the 2019 season, but assuming good health, Rodgers would like to play beyond that. “I might go nine more (seasons),” says Rodgers, who turned 30 last December. That would mean Rodgers is at the halfway point of his career. In a perfect world, he says, he would like to finish his time in the NFL with the Packers. “(There’s) a lot to be said about playing with one team for your entire career,” he says. He might also have the rare distinction of spending his entire starting tenure with the same head coach, Mike McCarthy, who recently said he wants to remain in Green Bay long-term. Rodgers and McCarthy have not always seen eye to eye, but like any good marriage, they have worked through their differences and developed a mutual respect. “I think when you look back, that’s going to be a relationship that definitely has shaped my career,” says Rodgers. “I think about that and how important Mike has been to my success when I’m frustrated at certain times. I remember that we’ve been through a lot together and that he’s had my back and it’s important for me to do the same for him.”
w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m
McCarthy has gained a reputation as an offensive innovator who likes to tinker with his schemes. But he knows how valuable top-notch quarterbacks are in the NFL and has willingly tweaked the Packers’ offense, which has consistently ranked in the top-10, to cater to Rodgers’ skill set. “No one knows our offense better than Aaron Rodgers,” McCarthy says. “Frankly, he’s driving this machine.” Rodgers has two distinct goals as he looks toward the second half of his NFL career. “Ultimately I think your legacy is obviously how many titles you win and what kind of teammate you were.” Regarding the former, Rodgers must reverse a recent NFL trend. Since 1991, just eight of the 24 Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks were 30 or older. “Although there haven’t been a lot of quarterbacks over 30 who have won the Super Bowl, the 30s have been the prime (years) of many quarterbacks throughout the history of our league,” he says. “From Montana and Young, Aikman, Jim Kelly, obviously Brady and Manning are still doing it at a high level, Drew Brees. So the challenge to be the best is what drives me and to just improve my body every day.” Rodgers’ desire to be a supportive teammate might stem from the three years he served as a backup to Favre, who openly declared it wasn’t his job to tutor the other quarterbacks in Green Bay. In contrast, Rodgers has gone out of his way to extend a helping hand to younger teammates. “He’s always been a good leader,” says Clements. “He helps the younger guys in the quarterback room, and on the field he knows what’s going on. He can make adjustments on the fly based on his knowledge of the system, and he can help out guys that may not on a particular play or two have the correct idea of what to do.” Rodgers demands of his teammates the same high standards he holds for himself. Early in training camp this year he said in no uncertain terms that the Packers’ young receivers better know the playbook and their assignments, or else. “It’s really all about one thing,” he explains. “It’s about mental preparation. … If you cannot line up right, if you can’t get the checks, if you can’t do what you’re supposed to do every time, then there’s no way you can possibly be on the field when I’m out there. Those guys understand that. I’m very demanding in that way. There are high expectations in them in their mental preparation. Packers fourth-year receiver Randall Cobb says Rodgers’ input and stringent expectations are welcomed. “It’s very valuable,” Cobb says. “I think that’s one thing that helps build that chemistry, understanding it from his perspective. I think him talking to (younger players) and them knowing what he’s thinking, it gives them a better idea of how to run the route.” Rodgers leads by his words and also by example. Packers backup quarterback Scott Tolzien gets a front-row seat every day in practice and sees how the master plies his craft. “That’s one of the greatest things all of us quarterbacks have going here,” Tolzien says. “We’re watching the best. To observe him every day, you can’t put a price tag on that.” But for Rodgers, the striving never stops. The hunger to improve persists. “He’s never satisfied,” says Packers quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt. “He’s only trying to get better. You see that in great players in any league, that personal pride. … It’s kind of what makes them great, the continued ability to want to be better than you were, even though you’re at the top of your game.”

nnie Bosko wasn’t sure what to expect from the crowd of inmates filing into the dreary public space at the Metro Davidson County Detention Facility in Nashville, Tennessee. She’s used to crowded bars, packed rooms and teeming arenas, but playing to this audience was a first for the 28-year-old singer and songwriter. “It was eye-opening,” she says of the concert. “This is a new project for me, sharing my music with people that need it, people that are in dark, desolate places.”
A
She’s performing at the prison with fellow Nashville singer/songwriter Jordan Lawhead, who founded YouInspire.org and organized the prison concert. The two singers played a concert for female inmates and a while later for the male inmates. A live recording of the concert is planned for release in the future. “I have never seen anyone’s songs connect so much with these inmates,” Lawhead says of Bosko’s originals. “When she played, they were on their feet.”
Lawhead met Bosko four years ago when she sang on a demo for a song he co-wrote. And thanks to her “great singing,” the song was recorded by another country artist. Lawhead has worked with talented singers during his career in Los Angeles and Nashville, but none, he says, has “the clarity, tone and professionalism that Annie has. She works with the best in the world. Everybody respects her vocally.” Bosko may be an unknown in some circles but to giants in the music industry, like
“For me, going to college was going to the Bluebird Café and listening to music,” Bosko says. Grammy Award-winning artist/producer David Foster, she’s a proven success. She’s performed with Adele, Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Darius Rucker, Michael Buble and Kenny G. She’s also opened for country greats Josh Turner, Big & Rich, Thompson Square and Dierks Bentley. A native of Thousand Oaks, California, Bosko was performing by age 5. Her first performance was a heartfelt rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” a song she sang at her great-grandmother’s funeral. As she grew up, she sang at church, school, sporting events and birthday parties. “I sang wherever I could,” she says. “I was like a little music box.” Her first big gig came at 13 when she was tapped by Disney to sing the end title theme song, “Part Of Your World,” on the “Little Mermaid 2” soundtrack. “That was my first insight into the music world,” she says. “It was the first time I thought that I could do this as a job.” That prompted her to branch out musically in high school, singing commercial jingles and doing demos for songs and movies. Her next big moment came at 17 when she had the chance to sing Dolly Parton’s legendary song “I Will Always Love You” for Foster, who has worked with everyone from Parton to Chicago. A week after the on-the-spot audition, Bosko got a phone call from Foster’s assistant asking her to perform at a charity concert he was planning. That’s when she learned that she would be sharing the stage with Celine Dion and Michael Buble. “I was in shock. I never thought I would hear from him again,” she admits, referring to Foster. “You forget those moments later on but they are the milestone moments.” Not just a voice, Bosko started writing country music as a teenager. She grew up listening to the music of Patsy Cline with her father, a thirdgeneration farmer. “I always knew it was going to be a matter of time before I would go to Nashville,” she says. That time came when she was 19. Her first few years in Nashville were what she refers to as her “education.” “For me, going to college was going to the Bluebird Café and listening to music,” she says. A few years later she auditioned for and made the Top 36 singers on the Fox mega-hit “American Idol.” She was eliminated shortly thereafter and now likes to jokingly tell people that she “made it to American but not to idol.” But she learned a valuable lesson when she signed the contract required by the show. It barred her from performing or taking any record deals for a year. The experience taught her that you can’t “just be an artist, that you have to have a business mind too. You have to take responsibility and understand how business works and how the production process works.” w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

She used her contractual down time to dig deeper into songwriting, spending hours listening to the music of great songwriters like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson. “I couldn’t sing places or sign a deal, but I could write,” she says. And it paid off. A year later, she signed a publishing deal in Nashville based on the songs she had written during her hiatus from performing. She estimates she has written close to 1,000 songs. Some have been penned in solitude and some with writing partners. “There is a huge writing community in Nashville and that kicks you in the butt to write better songs because you are around great songwriters,” she explains. Her lyrics are inspired by everything from the books she reads to one-line references she hears in conversation. She wrote her song “Caged Bird” after reading the poem “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by the late Maya Angelou. Her song “Crooked Halo” was written after her younger sister’s graduation. Bosko heard someone refer to her sister as “our little angel with a crooked halo” and found it to be an appropriate observation. “My sister marches to the beat of her own drum,” she says. Recording artist and songwriter Danelle Leverett often collaborates with Bosko. The two met in 2008 when Leverett was a member of the duo the JaneDear Girls. “I was writing some songs for our album and I needed a good
w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m
singer to sing on the demo and I loved Annie’s voice,” Leverett explains. “Once the record label fell in love with the song we went in and put our own voices to it. We had to try and sing the songs just as good as she did and that was a hard thing to do because she is so good.” In 2012, Leverett and Kyle Jacobs wrote a song called “The Sun Will Rise.” They needed a singer with a huge vocal range and asked Bosko to “bring the song to life” on the demo. “She did it so beautifully that Kelly Clarkson put it on her album,” Leverett says. “Annie can sing anything.” Bosko isn’t the first to learn making it big in the recording industry in Nashville is incredibly difficult. Some members of the industry, like Leverett, believe female artists have more difficulty getting signed with a label than do their male counterparts. “It’s an epidemic problem in country music,” she says. “Some gatekeepers need to open their gates for females and Annie is one of them. She is probably one of the best live acts in this town.” Lawhead agrees, adding that Bosko is just starting to find her place in country music. “Before, she was singing other people’s songs. Now, she is singing her own songs and opening for bigger and bigger acts,” he says. “It takes time for an artist to find their own voice and I feel like she has finally found hers.” Bosko is currently working on an EP that she plans to release later this year.

Desert Oasis W
ork camping while living full-time in my motorhome has taken me to many memorable places. Whenever I take an assignment, my first order of the day is to establish a destination route. Then I research places of interest along the route: Corps lakes, national and state parks. There are even county and regional parks in many states that cater to the wandering way of life. The great phenomenon of our interstate system is the myriad wonders just a few short miles off the beaten path. On my way to a job in Texas, I discovered such a place of wonder. This is the incredible and true story of an unforgettable day spent swimming with endangered fish. How did I accomplish this amazing feat? Did I jump a fence topped with razor wire? Sneak past federal officials in the dead of night? Neither! I drove up to the entrance of a state park, paid for an RV site, parked and went for a swim. Deep in the belly of Texas, in the high mountain Chihuahua Desert, lies a cool oasis. Just seven miles off Interstate 10 on Texas 17 is where I found Balmorhea State Park. Here, the mingling of desert flora with lush wetlands (cienegas) is an ecologi-

cal paradox. The wetlands support many species of wildlife both above and below water in the midst of the arid desert. In 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program established by President Franklin Roosevelt to give meaningful work to thousands of unemployed people, dug out a two-acre swimming pool around San Solomon Springs. Lined with native stone, the pool today holds 3.5 million gallons of crystal-clear water constantly being refreshed by an enormous underground aquifer. It is the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool, with a depth of 25 feet. Divers come here to practice scuba-diving techniques and get certified. Even more impressive is the fact that endangered desert fish live and thrive in the pool: the Pecos Gambusia and the Comanche Springs pupfish. The pupfish in the springs are the sole remaining population of pupfish in the world. My adventure with these fish began after I had parked my RV among the surrounding mesquite and cottonwood trees at the Balmorhea campground. Following a change into swim gear, I walked out past the San Solomon Springs Courts, motelstyle retro lodging also built by the CCC us-

ing handmade adobe bricks. The lodging is still in use today. At the pool I walked slowly down the concrete steps so as not to frighten the aquatic life. Right at the last step I saw clusters of curious fish, ranging in size from 1 to 2 inches, gathered as if to greet me. They did not scatter when I stepped into the pool, but rather swam up to me and gently brushed against my legs with their little fish mouths. To me it felt like tiny little kisses! When I put my hands in the water, the fish did the same thing: bussing my fingers for microscopic edibles. They followed me around as I waded in the water, getting used to the 74-degree temperature. I felt like a pied piper in this water world. After a while of being adored by the endangered, I walked farther out into a deeper section of the pool and swam in the cool waters of that extraordinary oasis surrounded by the Chihuahua Desert. On the horizon a wild sunset of reds and oranges and pinks blazed across the late summer sky. A fitting end to a most memorable day.

utrition and food trends come and go. In past years, we’ve seen coconut water, kale and convenience foods all make an appearance. This year has been no exception. Let’s have a look at a few fads from 2014.
N
Coconut oil – is it all it’s cracked up to be?
Coconuts have hit the spotlight. While it remains popular at the gym, coconut oil has also hit the shelves at your local grocery store. There are claims that coconut oil helps with everything from weight loss to Alzheimer’s disease. The truth is there is not yet enough scientific evidence to support any of these health claims, but let’s look at some facts that can help you decide if coconut oil is a good choice for you. • Coconut oil is high in saturated fat. Research shows that its consumption tends to increase both your good and bad cholesterol. There are plenty of other oils that are low in saturated fat, which will not have a negative effect on cholesterol levels, including corn, sunflower, soybean, olive, safflower, canola, sesame and peanut oils. • There are different types of coconut oil – virgin (sweet flavor) and refined (no flavor) and partially hydrogenated (high in trans fat). If using coconut oil, skip the partially hydrogenated version. Trans fats have been found to be worse for your health than saturated fat. • Coconut oil can be used in baking as a substitute for shortening. Shortening is also a trans fat, so using virgin coconut oil is a better option. • Virgin coconut oil has some cancer-fighting antioxidant properties.

• Despite emerging research, the recommendation remains to limit saturated fat consumption. If you are going to use coconut, do so in moderation.
IS Cauliflower the new kale?
Is kale finally “so last year”? The leafy green vegetable has soared in popularity in recent years. It has been toted to be a “nutritional powerhouse.” Though dietitians predict that kale will continue to be popular, cauliflower is being called the new “it” vegetable with predictions that it will surpass kale in popularity in 2014. Though cauliflower certainly isn’t a new vegetable, it has been getting a new surge of attention – popping up on restaurant menus, on food blogs and in cooking magazines across the country. Keep an eye on menus at your favorite restaurants; it’s likely to appear there in some form or another. Here are some cauliflower facts: • Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable, or part of the cabbage family. Cruciferous vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and chemicals known as glucosinolates. According to the National Cancer Institute, glucosinolates are broken down during preparation, chewing and digestion to form compounds that have been found to inhibit the development of certain types of cancer in animals. Studies in humans have shown mixed results in cancer prevention, but some studies indicate that these compounds may have some cancer protective properties. • Cauliflower can be prepared in a multitude of ways. It can be mashed like potatoes; blended until creamy and used in sauces; minced into crumbs and added to dishes or served as a grain-like side; cut into florets or sliced into “steaks” and roasted or broiled; or eaten raw in salads or tossed with olive oil, vinegar and herbs.
What in the world is “eating clean”?
Have you heard the term “eating clean”? Though not a new concept, this is the practice of avoiding processed and refined foods and basing your diet on fresher, whole foods. This can be interpreted as eating more of the healthier options in each of the food groups and eating less of the not-so-healthy ones, like choosing a fresh cooked chicken breast over a breaded prepared frozen chicken breast. Dietitians can’t argue with the logic of clean eating. The idea promotes the healthy eating habits outlined in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Here are the basics of clean eating: • Limit processed foods – Choosing fresher foods will reduce excess sodium, sugar and fat intake. Look at the label. Less is more when considering ingredient lists. If the list is long and you can’t pronounce a lot of the ingredients, skip it. • Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables – We’ve all heard this one. The fresher the better. • Choose whole grains – “White” grains eliminate important nutrients in the process of refinement, including but not limited to fiber. Always look for the word “whole” when it comes to grains. • Limit the sweets – There is no true nutritional benefit to sugar. Watch the labels for foods like yogurt, cereal and tomato sauce. Have a sweet tooth? Choose naturally sweet alternatives like fruit. • Choose your fats wisely – Look for fats that are liquid at room temperature, like olive oil instead of butter. • Watch the salt – If you’re eating fresher foods over processed foods, you will automatically be reducing your salt intake. But stay away from the shaker and think about freshness when eating out. • Eat fresh meat – Simpler is better when it comes to preparation. Sauces are great, but make sure they’re made of wholesome, low-fat ingredients. Though it is not clear how food fads develop, trends like these are bound to continue in the coming years. They may or may not be based on sound, scientific research. So be sure to research the newest “in” food carefully before jumping on board. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

lessons in Success by claire b. lang
he NASCAR drivers I interview in victory lane each week are winners at the elite level. After searching my archives from 2014, I noticed that these speed demons’ post-win thoughts speak volumes to us about trudging through life toward success.
T
Jeff Gordon – Stay in the game
At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Jeff Gordon won for the fifth time in 2014, his team enjoyed redemption after an earlier pit mistake. “That last pit stop, I felt like I nailed my marks, they nailed the stop. …That’s what I’m looking at, not what happened on the first or second stop,” said Gordon. “Somebody said the gas man fell, but I didn’t even know it till now. Our pit crew is just phenomenal because they know how to stay in the game. “You’re going to make mistakes,” he said. “It’s not about making mistakes, it’s about not making the same mistakes twice and regrouping when you do.”
AJ Almendinger – After big mistakes, make a comeback
AJ Almendinger battled his way back from failing NASCAR’s substance abuse test and
36 C H A L L E N G E O C T O B E R 2 0 1 4
completing NASCAR’s Road to Recovery Program. “I went through hell in this series, absolute hell,” Almendinger said after winning at Watkins Glen this season. “Whether it was missing 19 races my first year, wanting to slit my wrists on a weekly basis, thinking about what am I doing here, to feel like I had it figured out and then to lose my job with Red Bull and to be so close a couple of times with the 43 (team) and then obviously to go through what I went through with the 22 (team) and just to go through hell and back, and to know that this was my dream that I’ve worked so hard over the last eight years was to win a race here.”
Brad Keselowski – Use failure as motivation to work harder and hone skills
In 2012, Brad Keselowski won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. In 2013, he didn’t qualify for NASCAR’s playoffs. “I think some of last year’s struggles put me in a spot to work harder and become a better race car driver,” Keselowski said after his 2014 New Hampshire win.
Carl Edwards – Don’t let pride keeping you from learning
Carl Edwards was not a great road-course racer initially, but he dropped back to learn how to excel at it. “My road-racing progression, it’s been a pretty long climb from when Jack (Roush) let Boris (Said) come to VIR (Virginia International Raceway), in the two-seater, and basically we ran off in the dirt a bunch all day, and Boris taught me all of the basics of road racing,” Edwards said after winning this season at Sonoma. “To be able to come here and to be able to win this race 10 years later is really special. A lot of hard work has gone into this.”
Jimmie Johnson - Find a team you can trust and rely on them for support in the tough times
Jimmie Johnson celebrated in victory lane at Michigan this season. “Some of the losses you have are – you got what you could that day and you went on. But a lot of those losses in there sting, and I think experience through those moments makes us stronger and better,” Johnson said after the win. “Everybody knows about 2005 and the milk-and-cookies meeting that (team owner) Rick (Hendrick) had with us. I think from that moment on, we were able to be more comfortable, oddly enough, in our own skin, and as a part of team 48. … We’re in this thing together, and we are team 48. Falling back on that is really what I tell myself, and it helps us through whatever the stretch might be.”
Jamie McMurray - Believe in yourself
Jamie McMurray won this season’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. “When you go through the garage and you look at drivers who are with really good teams, some of them are having bad years, and if you think that they’re not doubting their ability or down on themselves, they are, because that’s just the way our sport works,” he said after the win. “I think when you’re not doing well, you always wonder if you’re capable of competing at this level. … It’s hard, but you just have to believe.” It’s easy to look at winners and think they’ve got the world by the tail, but it’s how they handle failure that paves the road to success. Using their advice in life, we can catapult our own race toward victory.

Snake Tales by brenda potts
anger lady! Help us! Help us!” The desperate cries were coming from two small children in a john boat floating in the middle of a cove. At the time, I was working as a creel clerk for the Illinois Natural History Survey. The markings on my boat and uniform would give the impression of someone working as a game warden. As I got closer I could tell something was wrong. I pulled my boat alongside and before I could speak both kids yelled at once, “There’s a snake in our boat!” The kids were sitting on the elevated boat seats meant for fishing, with their feet pulled up and the father nearly perched on the motor. I told them everything would be all right and I would come over and get the snake. At that moment you could see the wheels turning inside the father’s head. The story of a girl rescuing the family from a snake would be told many times by his kids. His ego just couldn’t handle the thought. So he shakily asked to borrow a pair of gloves and then proceeded to overcome his fear of snakes and save the day. On another occasion, I was standing on the rip-rap interviewing some fishermen along
38 C H A L L E N G E O C T O B E R 2 0 1 4
the shoreline. About halfway through the questions all four of them stopped talking and stared at me. They all looked like they had seen a ghost and were suddenly frozen in fear. Finally one of them said, “Lady, there’s a snake at your feet.” I looked down to see a common water snake slithering past me. I continued on with my interview in spite of those anglers’ eyes growing as big as golf balls. During graduate school, I took a lower vertebrate biology class. There were only about 10 of us in the class. We all shared a twisted sense of humor. We enjoyed taking the giant snakes out of the big jars filled with formaldehyde, washing them off and wrapping them around our arms to scare all the other students in the hallways between classes. During that class we took a field trip to southern Illinois. For extra credit points, we had to catch lower vertebrates (snakes, salamanders, frogs, etc.), bring them to the professor and properly identify them. I was chasing a fast little green snake through the ground vegetation while my classmates bus-
ied themselves turning over a log to catch a black rat snake. In the process, they disturbed a nest of ground bees and things got a little crazy for the next several minutes. I’ve eaten rattlesnake. Not everyone can say that, or would want to. We were turkey hunting in Texas when one of the gals shot a snake longer than she was tall. The chef said he knew how to cook the snake so someone cut off the head and put the body in the cooler. Awhile later the gal decided she wanted to get pictures with the snake so we tossed it into the utility vehicle and headed to a scenic spot. Along the way the snake came back to life (as much as a headless snake could). I was sitting next to it when the headless body started moving again. I am not afraid of snakes, but I will admit it was rather unnerving. The chef didn’t do a very good job cooking the snake. It tasted like rubbery chicken. He must have overcooked it. I don’t think he ever wanted to see it moving again either.

reality check by mike howe Find Mike online on Twitter: @TruckingDC and Facebook: TruckingPoliticsMore
t’s time for a reality check! Times have changed and the new generation being recruited to fill trucks, the millennial generation (ages 18-29), has a different attitude about life, work and politics. It’s this generational thought process change that makes it so important for policy makers and business leaders to adapt. No longer will trucking companies be able to recruit drivers of this generation with promises of good miles and good home time, and no longer will policy makers be able to assume that millennials trust government. Looking at millennials and how they work, technology is the key. Sitting behind the wheel of a truck does not mean millennial drivers don’t want to be connected. Millennials are also naturally collaborative, especially if technology is used. Simply sending millennial drivers out on the road and never involving them in the bigger process can cause dissatisfaction. Politicians and policy makers also face a challenge with the millennial generation. A July 2014 Reason-Rupe survey of millennials identified a number of concerning facts about how this generation feels about government. It found that 66 percent of those surveyed believe government is inefficient and wasteful (a 2009 survey had found that only 42 percent of millennials felt that way). Sixty-three percent in the ReasonRupe survey said they believe government regulators favor special interests, and 58 percent said they believe government agencies abuse their power. This lack of trust in government is relevant to the leaders in the trucking industry as well because it shows those in authority must earn and maintain trust that can easily be lost. Within the survey there are a number of data points that may be of interest to the trucking industry, especially as it relates to transportation, economic and social policies:
I
• •
42 C H A L L E N G E O C T O B E R 2 0 1 4
64 percent of millennials say cutting government spending by 5 percent would help the economy 59 percent say cutting taxes would help the economy
• • • • • • • •
55 percent say reducing regulations would help the economy 53 percent say reducing the size of govern- ment would help the economy 69 percent say it is government’s re- sponsibility to guarantee everyone access to health care and 51 percent have a favor- able view of the Affordable Care Act 68 percent say government should ensure everyone makes a living wage 66 percent say raising taxes on the wealthy would help the economy 63 percent say spending more on job train- ing would help the economy 57 percent favor spending more money on infrastructure 54 percent want government to guarantee everyone a college education
Politically speaking, millennials tend to be more socially liberal and more fiscally centrist (with the potential to lean conservative). The data, however, shows that social issues are more important to millennials than fiscal issues, which would tend to favor more liberal politicians. The survey also asked which party they trusted with 15 different policy issues, and neither party was trusted on 12 of those issues. Democrats fared better with gay marriage, poverty and the environment, while Republicans fared well with promoting entrepreneurship. What this means for the 2014 and 2016 elections is that politicians have a lot of work to do to attract millennials. Similarly, the trucking industry will have to adapt to the perceptions, attitudes and work styles of the millennial generation. Looking at the data, while the trucking industry should have concerns, it should also be encouraged by millennials’ attitudes toward regulation, infrastructure needs, lower taxes and training. The question now is how many leaders in the trucking industry, and in government, for that matter, will really take the time to understand this generation? same shift. A large group of young trick-or-treaters were walking along the street he was driving down and crowding the sidewalk. In the shuffle, one boy was accidentally knocked onto the street. The part my friend emphasized was his “luck” in seeing the shining of a flashlight near the curb, followed by body movement on the street. Thankfully, my friend saw the light and had enough time to avoid a tragedy. His panicked call to me afterward showed how much the incident shook him up.
In my many years of working the night of All Hallow’s Eve, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dangers associated with the dramatic increase in pedestrian traffic on most suburban streets. Little “ghouls” and “goblins” come out at sunset focused solely on their quest for candy, and spotting them can sometimes be difficult. Although some children play it safe and carry flashlights and glow-sticks, it can still be difficult to see them as they run about the streets. Even early celebrations at shopping malls and business areas prior to the traditional Halloween night can be fraught with danger. If you happen to be a parent with kids going out on the hunt, be sure to coach them on how to stay safe. Brightly colored costumes are best for visibility, but if your children do have darker

costumes, make sure they have a light source that makes them more visible in the dark. Remind them to look out for vehicle traffic and to cross streets only in well-lit, crosswalk-controlled intersections, preferably with an adult. Unfortunately, this is also the time of year we adults can get a little careless, as evidenced by the marked increase in “driving under the influence” offenses, usually after costume parties. If you’re going to a party, remember to have a designated driver. When I work during this time of year, I follow a few simple rules: drive slowly through populated areas, keep on the lookout for increased pedestrian traffic, and watch for potential drivers under the influence. Have fun this All Hallow’s Eve, but be safe too.

Great American Truck Show Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Pilot Flying J booth at the 2014 Great American Trucking show in Dallas. Pilot Flying J team members had a great time talking with professional drivers, listening to feedback and giving away thousands of free MyRewards loyalty points. Professional drivers enjoyed a variety of activities at the Pilot Flying J booth, including a meet and greet with Pilot Flying J Health Champion and NBC’s “Biggest Loser” Season 2 At-Home Winner, Pete Thomas. Pete taught drivers how to stay healthy on the road through lessons on mouth, mind, muscle and movement. We look forward to doing it all again next year!
