trending

he American Trucking Association recently published its annual American Trucking Trends report. The ATA has been producing the report for 60 years and it has become an essential guide for the industry. The stats, of course, never fail to impress. In 2013, trucking represented 81.2 percent of the nation’s freight bill ($681.7 billion in gross freight revenues) and trucks transported 9.7 billion tons of freight (69.1 percent of total domestic tonnage). There were 32.1 million registered trucks used for business purposes in 2012; of that 2.3 million were Class 8 trucks and 11.7 million were commercial trailers. In 2012, commercial trucks logged in 421.3 billion miles on the road. The report also noted that the trucking industry employed 7 million people in 2012, 3.2 million being drivers (an increase of 142,000 from the previous year). The percentage of women (5.4 percent) and minority drivers (34.9 percent) both increased in 2012, with both groups reaching their largest percentage since statistics were taken with the current U.S. Department of Labor definitions starting in 2001. All these numbers certainly affirm what those in the industry have said for decades – trucking is the driving force behind our nation’s economy. Now if we can just get the rest of the country and those working within the Washington beltway to realize it. From the roadways to the raceways, our cover story this month features one of the most dynamic drivers in NASCAR (Page 20). Carl Edwards has the enviable or perhaps unenviable title as one of the best drivers without a championship. Success is measured in degrees and I’m sure Edwards’ record on the track is the envy of 99.9 percent of the racing world. But with potential comes expectations, and “Cousin Carl” is fully aware there would be something missing if he ended his career without a Sprint Series Cup in the living room display case. In 2011, Edwards tied for first in points for the season but lost the championship to Tony Stewart because Stewart had more race wins – a tough pill to swallow after a tremendous year of racing. After the last race at Homestead, Edwards said, “I just had to drive the hardest I could, and I did. I drove to the edge and beyond, and that is all I had.” Since then, Edwards has finished 15th (2012) and 13th (2013) in the standings. But I wouldn’t be too worried about him. “Hey, man, if it was all easy, it wouldn’t be as much fun when you win,” he famously said. Safe driving.

Hey Dolly

Can’t thank you enough for putting my alltime favorite singer on the cover. Dolly Parton is an inspiration whether you’re a country music fan or not. I think I’ve seen her more than 50 times live and she’s still got it! My husband and I were just talking about visiting Dollywood. Your cover decided for us. We’re going! Rachel Polk Lexington, Kentucky

Outskirts of Town

Chad Blake’s column of living on the “outskirts of town” truly hit home for my wife and me. We’ve been full-time RVers for 13 years now and we’ve always talked about that certain thing, although not clearly defined, that all RVers have in common. I think RVers are just carrying forward the time-honored tradition of our forefathers … satisfying our curiosity about what’s over that next horizon. Dale and Molly Tulverson Ames, Iowa

Healthy Choices

Funny to see rhubarb and kohlrabi in Linda McGirr’s June “Healthy Choices” column. Both those veggies are staples up here in the Midwest and not considered out of the ordinary at all. In fact, rhubarb is practically a weed up here. All the diners near us have strawberry rhubarb pie on the menu every summer and it’s something I look forward to every year. Kate Winchester Windom, Minnesota

Road Warriors

So great to see drivers highlighted in the magazine. The media seems to only highlight when drivers are in the wrong and rarely when they do something heroic. Professional truck drivers are truly the knights of the highway and help a lot more people than they hurt. Wish people would realize that. Gordon Walker Caldwell, Idaho

CorrectionS In the June “Canine Warriors” story it was incorrectly noted how Stubby, the most decorated dog of World War I, got to France. He was not smuggled onto a flight but rather was smuggled onboard the freighter SS Minnesota.

Move over, Wimbledon; the U.S. Open is here. Taking place from Aug. 25 through Sept. 8, the U.S. Open has been held every year since its inception in 1881. America’s marque tennis tournament is the fourth and final tournament in the Grand Slam, coming after the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. Originally played in Rhode Island, the tournament moved to various places along the East Coast, until finally settling in New York in 1924. The tournament is held in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Let’s take a closer look at the game where love means nothing. The tournament was played on grass for its first 93 years, then on clay for two years until, in 1977, it changed to DecoTurf, a hard-court surface composed of acrylic, rubber and silica.

We eat breakfast in the truck a lot – fresh fruit, cereal, oatmeal, etc. We share a meal for dinner. The portions at restaurants are way too much for one person. – Meredith Bolton

Cooking our own meals in the truck has saved us $22,000 a year. It’s a money saver and a lot healthier. – Jessica Frazier-Parker

Professional tennis players were not allowed to play in the Open until 1968. To help the television audience see the ball, the color of U.S. Open tennis courts was changed to blue in 2005. Both the men’s and women’s singles winners receive the same amount of prize money; they also pick up identical Tiffany and Co.-designed trophies. The men’s tournament started in 1881 and the women’s tournament started seven years later. There’s a match for every kind of player – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles, seniors, juniors and players in wheelchairs.

U.S.OPEN b y robert nason

inehurst No. 2 opened in 1907, and is considered the masterpiece of famed golf designer Donald Ross. Over the next 40 years, Ross would continue tweaking the course he described as “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” But even Ross could not have imagined how important his course would become in the annals of golf history after the U.S. Open held both the men’s and women’s U.S. Open, back-to-back at the same venue for the first

p

time, on his famous course under the tall, whispering pines of North Carolina. Production for this massive two-pronged event, as you can imagine, goes beyond most major events. At least the Super Bowl is contained within a stadium. For the U.S. Opens, operations are spread over about 4 miles of golf course and must handle nearly half a million spectators. It’s like building a small town when you consider the number of merchandise tents, concessions, sponsor tents, bleachers, etc., that must be constructed from the ground up. “It’s a lot of organization and putting out fires,” Leighton Schwob, director of U.S. Open Operations for the U.S. Golf Association (USGA), describes it rather modestly.

Here are just a few of the elements involved: • 397,138 square feet of canvas for tents • 3,255 tons of air conditioning (enough to cool 1,300 homes) • 22 megawatts of electricity (enough to power 4,500 homes) • 22,900 bleacher seats • 100 office trailers • 600 portable toilets • 120 shuttle buses The merchandise tent alone measured 39,000 square feet, and USGA used about $100,000 worth of lumber building the various structures.

w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

A U G U S T 2 0 1 4 C H A L L E N G E 17

In all, the event saw more than 1,000 deliveries made. And the deliveries don’t include the nearly 50 media trucks that descended onto the course a week before the tournaments. To accommodate the number of worldwide networks broadcasting, 2 million feet of cable were laid across the course to support cameras at all 18 greens as well as cameras at various tees. So what are the major logistical challenges? “It’s different every year,” Schwob explains. “Last year (at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania) it was space. We just didn’t have room. We even rented out the yards of homes along the course to put up corporate tents and concessions.” At Pinehurst, space was not the problem, with additional courses surrounding Pinehurst No. 2 that more than accommodated the requirements. Handling the larger crowds was the real concern this year, but with an army of 6,000 volunteers, both tournaments went off without a hitch. Martin Kaymer of Germany won the men’s tournament and Michelle Wie took home the trophy for the women. And even as Wie was basking in the glory of her first major tournament win on the final day, the trucks started rolling in, loading up, and hauling the deconstructed materials to the next USGA event somewhere around the country.

by mike hembree

arl Edwards is in the middle of his 10th full season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Over that decade, he has become one of the sport’s most recognizable stars – aggressive, smart, handsome, engaging, winning. He has been a cover boy for numerous magazines, has become the perfect pitchman for sponsors and is comfortable in almost every setting – much like Jeff Gordon when Gordon popped onto the NASCAR scene in 1993 and basically changed the landscape of the sport. Yet, something’s missing. And Edwards can identify it as quickly as anyone else. Through 10 otherwise productive seasons and while riding in some of the sport’s best equipment, the driver who would be one of NASCAR’s most popular and television-friendly Sprint Cup champions has zero championships to celebrate. It’s not that he hasn’t been close. In fact, he has been close enough to scare himself and those he was chasing. The numbers have placed him within shouting distance, but, at the end of the season’s last day, there was no shouting.

C

Edwards was so close to the championship in 2011 that he literally couldn’t have been closer – he and Tony Stewart tied in the points race after the season’s final event, but Stewart won the title because of a tiebreaker (number of wins). It was the hardest of losses, sort of like kissing your sister, as college football coaches used to say back when there were games that ended in ties. In 2005, his first full season in Sprint Cup, Edwards tied for second in points with Greg Biffle (Stewart won the title), and, in 2008, despite winning nine times, Edwards was second in points to Jimmie Johnson. Edwards’ trip to the Promised Land, a ride that appeared to be paved with only a few potholes in his first year, has become increasingly hazardous and much more difficult to navigate. After a bang-up start in his first season, it all seemed a bit too much of a breeze. “In 2005, I thought,

‘Well, this is easy,’” Edwards says. “So it should be ‘No problem?’ I’ve changed my thinking a lot. Now I think I appreciate it more.” He also is much more educated in the ways and means of the week-toweek traveling circus that is the Sprint Cup Series. It is about much more than simply driving a car fast. The intricacies of the sport demand a multipronged approach and an educated look at the long stretch of the season, the longest in professional sports. “I have a better understanding of the competition and a better understanding of the pace of it,” Edwards says. “It’s a whirlwind. It’s very easy to miss opportunities and to not understand the consequences of actions. I think now I have a better understanding of all that.”

Edwards’ famous race winning celebratory back flip has become a fan favorite. PHOTO: Robert Laberge/Getty Images

With all that in mind, Edwards is perhaps the sport’s most prepared driver. He has a workout regimen that would have most drivers sagging to their knees. The result – a cut, muscled body – has been seen on magazine covers. He eats right, snacks on health foods and can ride a mountain bike with the same competitive flair he brings to

racing. The effort makes Edwards stronger and fresher late in races. And late in seasons. Edwards’ signature victory celebration – a back flip off his car in front of the grandstand – is clear evidence that he is not your run-ofthe-mill stock car racer. Most drivers who attempted such acrobatics probably would wind up with some serious back issues.

Edwards’ emphasis on fitness and the fact he has a spot on one of the sport’s top teams (now with Roush Fenway Racing and possibly with another major team in the future) should keep him in the championship mix for years to come. At 34 years old, he is racing in his prime years. Edwards prefers to look ahead, but glances at the past keep him mindful of what could have been. “I feel like I can be a lot better,” he says. “In 2008 we won nine races. I should have won the championship with the cars and team we had. I should have done a better job. It was there for us. “I think I realized then that it’s not just having a fast car. You have to be perfect on and off pit road. You have to be perfect in the way you communicate with the crew chief and the way you practice. You have to think ahead. You have to be ready for everything. “All the top guys who are really good are really good at a number of things. There are 43 guys out there who can make a fast lap, but there are only six or eight who can be here day in and day out and year in and year out and be at the front edge. That’s hard to do, hard to stay there, hard to be the guy every week.” The end of this Sprint Cup season will bring some odd moments for Edwards and the rest of the Cup driver lineup. For the

first time, the 10-race end-of-season stretch known as the Chase for the Sprint Cup will use an elimination format, radically changing the dynamics of the championship run. Designed to juice television ratings and general interest in the final weeks of the season, the new format will give 16 drivers a chance at the championship. Those 16 will be determined after the Sept. 6 race at Richmond, Virginia. The field of eligible championship drivers will be cut to 12 at Chase race No. 3, to eight after Chase race No. 6 and to four after Chase race No. 9. Only those four drivers will be eligible for the championship in the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida, and the highest-finishing driver of that quartet will win the title. Never before has NASCAR determined its champion with such a pressure-packed sort of finale.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any Chase race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next Chase round, so race victories carry more weight than in previous seasons. “The new format is just that,” Edwards says. “It’s so new that I don’t think any previous strategy works. You’ve just got to go out and do this a different way. “It’s hard to think about racing any harder, but somehow we find a way. You’ll have to work differently on the final restart or something. If you get to the third race of the Chase and you

don’t have a way to advance yet, you have to do everything you can to win.” The new Chase will be more pressurefilled than ever, Edwards said, but it isn’t like he doesn’t know that feeling. He has been there, done that on the high ground. “I feel like I’ll be in a good position for that because I’ve been in that position a number of times,” he says. “I feel pretty good about that. But I think we’re all curious to see how it works out. It’s a whole different world. I believe it’s going to make at least four of the Chase races and maybe more basically championship events. If you don’t make it to the next round, you’re out.”

Although Edwards lost the 2011 title to Stewart in the worst of ways, he said he and his team did virtually everything they could that season. Examining the year, he said there weren’t many opportunities to produce a different result. “I don’t look back on 2011 and see many mistakes,” he said. “I hope I can do that when the pressure is on this year. When we get to Homestead, we have to be prepared to sit on the pole, lead every lap, win the race. We have to push out all the outside stuff and focus.” Edwards, who won early this season at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, is a virtual lock to be in the playoffs. “Having the opportunity to race for the championship and everything that comes with it – it’s such a huge prize,” he says. “It would be the biggest achievement of my career. Having the opportunity to win it a couple of times and to go through the battle has hardened me and made me realize how to deal with all of it.” Things have changed dramatically in Edwards’ life since he moved from Missouri short tracks to the Camping World Truck Series to a Sprint Cup deal with team owner Jack Roush. He has gone from pinching pennies to flying his own airplanes. “When Jack hired me, I didn’t know how long it was going to last,” Edwards said. “I didn’t know if I was going to run terrible and be gone in three months. So I didn’t spend a dollar. I got the cheapest apartment I could find. Rented a washer-dryer month to month. “I lived in that apartment and saved every dime. At the end of 2004, Jeff Burton left [Roush], and I got the Cup ride. I didn’t feel comfortable with my position as far as being employed. I didn’t think there was any security in my job until into 2005 when Office Depot signed on (as sponsor).”

Born in Missouri, Edwards was a substitute teacher while trying to break into racing. PHOTO: Jerry Markland/Getty Images

Those first few years with Roush cemented Edwards’ reputation as a strong up-and-comer. Prior to getting a shot in the Truck series and then the call from Roush, he was one of thousands of young drivers looking for an open door to the top levels of the sport. Most never make it. In a series that has only 43 slots for drivers, Sprint Cup can seem to be an unattainable goal even for drivers who shine at regional levels. After several years of success at short tracks in the Midwest, Edwards, who also was teaching part-time, reached a roadblock of sorts. Then he had a wacky idea. Gathering up $130, he printed 3,000 business cards. On them, he placed a lot of resume-type information, a contact number and the phrase “If you’re looking for a driver, you’re looking for me.” Virtually everybody who encountered Edwards received one of the cards (many probably got more than one), and he put copies of the information in the classified sections of racing magazines. “I had a lot of people make fun of me, but it worked out,” he said. Mike Mittler, a respected team owner in the Truck series, gave Edwards a part-time ride in 2001, and he showed enough pizzazz in that situation to attract the attention of Roush, solidifying his presence at NASCAR’s upper levels. Still, Edwards watched every penny. He even refused cable television, earning a significant amount of teasing from thenteammate Mark Martin. But Edwards was so focused on the task at hand – testing cars and building his career – that he had little time for outside interests. And he didn’t want to lose the change in his pocket. Fast forward a decade, and Edwards has a family – wife Kate and children Annie and Michael – and more money than he can spend. He owns and flies airplanes, makes television appearances on game shows and dramas and continues his long-time devotion to physical training. He has 22 career wins at the sport’s top level and is considered a victory threat at virtually every stop on the tour. The big remaining goal is the Cup championship, a prize that has eluded Edwards in the most frustrating of ways. This year, he might cash in.

TRUCK DRIVER

CHALLENGE by jack markham

he Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge has crossed the midway point in its 2014 season. Entering their second season of competition, transport drivers from IndyCar and NHRA have experienced what it takes to win the $30,000 grand prize. Inaugural IndyCar champion Todd Deneve and NHRA champion Keith Smith have garnered much attention as the best in their leagues, while Greg McGuire defends his title against previous champions Tom McCrimmon, Bob Decker and Jamie Price in the NASCAR series. Eight chicanes have taken place this year, with the best still to come to decide who will be champions for 2014.

T

NASCAR Series

This year in the NASCAR series of the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge (TDC), Greg Sorber, No. 22 Team Penske, has predicted that he’s going to be “one of the guys getting the big trophy at the end of the year.” Sorber, a 17-year NASCAR veteran who has yet to finish in the top three of the championship standings, has opened up this season by securing two third-place finishes in NASCAR chicanes 1 and 2. But as consistent as he’s been, 2011 NASCAR champion Jamie Price has been right there in the hunt as well. Price, No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing, clinched a victory in NASCAR chicane No. 1, and

followed that up with a second-place finish in NASCAR chicane No. 2. The championship campaigns of Price and Sorber were tempered, however, when 2013 NASCAR champion Greg McGuire emerged to win NASCAR chicane No. 2. The transport drivers of NASCAR will compete in their third chicane on Aug. 21 in Bristol, Virginia. The fourth and final NASCAR chicane will take place on Sept. 8 in Concord, North Carolina.

NHRA

After finishing second overall in the 2013 NHRA championship, Gary Cummin of Western Motorsports began the season with a win in NHRA chicane No. 1. “It’s exciting to win the first event of the season,”

Photo: JACK MARKHAM

Rick Pearson, from the IndyCar series, is on a roll, winning the first two chicanes of the season. said Cummin after the win. “Last year I was fortunate to place in the top three, but this year I hope to win it outright.” Winning outright, however, is easier said than done. In a rare sequence, three transport drivers from the NHRA posted a perfect score in NHRA chicane No. 2. In the end, it was Duane Doffing of Tuttle Motorsports who would edge Frank Fearnside of Allen Johnson Racing and Cruz Pedregon of Cruz Pedregon Racing with the quickest time of the three. Competitors were faced with an unexpected element in NHRA chicane No. 3, having to perform a tire check midway through the course. Matt Smith of Matt Smith Racing emerged as the driver quickest on his feet and safest behind the wheel. The NHRA will conclude their season with NHRA chicane No. 4 on Sept. 11 in Concord.

IndyCar

On the IndyCar side of the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge, the 2014 season has been very kind to Chip Ganassi Racing. Ganassi transport driver Rick Pearson opened the season by being the last driver to compete in IndyCar chicane No. 1, only to win the event outright with a perfect score. The competition then moved to IndyCar’s hometown of Indianapolis, where transport drivers Wayne Selman of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Rollie Kirby of Andretti Autosport took their best shot at the reigning IndyCar winner, but Pearson would again claim victory. “Nobody does this kind of thing for the transport drivers, except Pilot Flying J,” Pearson said after his second victory. “It’s an honor to win their competition!” But it wasn’t all Pearson on the IndyCar series. Rising to the occasion in IndyCar chicane No. 3, 2013 IndyCar champion Todd Deneve of Chip Ganassi Racing made his move for this year’s championship. Deneve posted a remarkable 3-error score, only to be bested by his Ganassi teammate Jake Klomp for the win. The IndyCar series’ final chicane of 2014 was held July 10 in Newton, Iowa (results not available prior to printing).

n 1975, a young filmmaker named Steven Spielberg released a picture that forever changed the way the public viewed the open ocean. “Jaws” was not only the first blockbuster, but also the cause of nightmares and phobias for many who saw it. It’s difficult to see a dorsal fin sticking out of the water and not immediately think of composer John Williams’ chilling soundtrack. But now, nearly 40 years since the release of that film, the tides are slowly changing on the shark fear front. Sharks are more popular than ever, partly due to a certain week dedicated to them on a cable channel. While there’s a fascination with these creatures, there’s still a lot we don’t know about them. Chris Fischer and his organization OCEARCH want to change that. Although a self-proclaimed “ocean guy,” Chris Fischer started out as a fish-

I

ing guy. From 2002 to 2008, he hosted a fishing show on ESPN Outdoors called “Offshore Adventures” that combined the thrill of fishing and the message of conservation. It was working on that show that made him realize the role fishermen could play in preserving the world’s oceans, and more specifically, sharks. “Fishermen love the ocean just the way the scientists do,” he says, which led him to “bring the practical world of professional mariners together with the academic world of scientists so we can explode the science forward beyond where it’s been able to go.” Hands-on research is vital for animal research, but how do you get your hands on an elusive species like the white shark? For scientists, it’s a simple problem of logistics, Fischer says. “You got to catch fish to study them and so when you’re talking about a 4,000-pound white shark, do you think

a scientist and his intern are going to have the capacity to go out and catch that?” Fischer’s answer to this conundrum was the foundation of OCEARCH, which combined his fishing expertise, his crew and a boat that’s outfitted with a custom 75,000-pound lift platform. By doing the literal “heavy lifting,” Fischer can offer a handful of scientists access to a live white shark, or other species depending on the research, for up to 15 minutes in order to perform studies and take samples before returning the shark safely to the water. In addition to the researchers’ tags, OCEARCH tags the sharks to be tracked in real time via their Global Shark Tracker app so everyone in the world can follow along. Dr. Nick Whitney, who studies behavioral ecology and physiology at Mote Marine Laboratory, has been on several expeditions with OCEARCH

and he says the response from the scientific community has been supportive. “You can imagine it’s a pretty rare thing to get your hands on a live adult white shark. So when you start talking to other researchers about ‘Could you use any samples from this animal?’ or ‘Is there any study you think you could do with this animal?’ you get people contacting you from not only all over the country but all over the world,” he says. “I believe it’s about a dozen research projects that are going on with every shark that comes onto the lift, everything from parasites and collecting blood to collecting muscle tissue, all the different tags we attach, using ultrasound to see if the animals are pregnant or not. It’s a pretty wide range of studies going on. We really make the most of it whenever we get our hands on a shark.” Capturing a live white shark is a delicate business, not at all like the thrill of reeling in a catch. “The biggest misunderstanding about what it’s like to capture a shark is that it’s enormously stressful,” Fischer says. “It’s not an adrenaline rush at all. When you first see a shark come in, you’re looking at an animal that’s two, three, four thousand pounds. Your first thing is OK, this is a real deal shark here, are the right people in the right spot, and let’s do it by the book here every time, so nobody gets hurt.” Despite the inherent danger in wrestling with the ocean’s ultimate predator, injuries with white sharks are very rare. “You know what, little black tips have put a lot more injuries on people in our group than the white sharks have because small sharks are just snappier and easier to get bitten by them,” Whitney says. “Nobody makes that movie, but when you tag one of the white sharks you’re working on the dorsal fin and you’re about eight feet away from the head and the mouth, but when you’re tagging [a smaller shark] you’re eight inches away and they’re quicker.”

Dr. Nick Whitney (right) attaches an accelerometer tag package to white shark Lydia in 2013. The safety precautions for the shark are as extensive as they are for the crew. “When you get the shark in the cradle it’s about really going from trying to put the shark where you want it, to then really nurturing and babying the shark like a child,” Fischer explains. “You put a hose in its mouth to make sure it can breathe. You put a towel over its eyes to calm it down, and pour water over it to keep it cool. You’re trying to execute 12 research projects in 15 minutes so you’re moving scientists around. It’s kind of like a choreographed dance and you’re trying to make sure we get all of these scientists’ projects done in 15 minutes.” While the scientists and researchers are focused on collecting data, Fischer is thinking on a bigger scale. “In the back of my mind, so much happens every time we capture a shark,” he admits. “Will it be the first shark in history to show us the breeding sites and the nursery so we can then save those spots? Will it captivate the world? Will it swim into major populated areas and ignite a conversation around the shark so we can leverage that for advocacy to shut down finning?” Once a shark is released, another journey begins. “It’s not the end when [the shark] swims away because we open-source it and the tracker; the whole world can now follow that shark. Where will it take us? What community will it bring together? When you look at our Atlantic sharks, it’s brought together Cape Cod with northeastern Florida and North and South Carolina, Newfoundland and Ireland. All these people are talking about their one Atlantic white shark that visits them all; it’s connected all those dots and created this conversation of appreciation and curiosity instead of fear that is really powerful for the future of the ocean.” To follow along on the adventures of tagged sharks, download the app Global Shark Tracker from OCEARCH.

eople lock themselves out of their vehicles and houses every day. It’s usually no big deal. They call for a locksmith, pay them $50 and get the locks unlocked. End of story. But imagine being locked out of both your car and your home on wheels, alone, in a strange place, darkness setting in with strangers all around you. My travels last summer took me up 89 North in Arizona through the exquisite Painted Desert and the southern reaches of the Navajo reservation. Sunny 75-degree days greeted my early September sojourn. I found the perfect stopover at the Lake Powell/Page RV Park. That evening after a swim in their heated pool, I decided on a leisurely stroll around the park. As I went outside and was closing the door I decided not to take my keys and dropped them on the counter. It was one of those heart-stopping moments. Just as the door was closing, the realization set in: It was on auto-lock. Door slammed shut! Whoops! Too late! There I was, standing next to my rig in the dark. No phone, no money, both vehicles locked tight. A vision appeared of my to-do list with these words at the very top: Get a magnetic spare key box. I had not! The park office was closed. The door was locked. Two attendants were inside counting the day’s receipts; cash lay out on the counter. They yelled through the locked glass door that it was against policy to let me inside. When I told them my plight, the younger of the two offered to call a locksmith. I was so thankful. For a half-hour I waited outside, pacing up and down the parking lot. Twilight turned to dusk. Then, like a gleaming white stallion, a small van with a glass

side and “Locksmith” in bold black letters on the door pulled into the RV park. Driving the van was my savior, my champion, my knight in shining ... pajamas? He stepped out of his little “office on wheels” clad in shortie, seersucker pajamas (a manly plaid) with a pair of bed slippers on his feet, fresh from a shower with his hair slicked back. Bemused, I stood there with the politest smile I could muster. After all, Mr. PJ was going to get me back into my home, my sanctuary. All business, he asked to see my vehicle. I immediately took him over to my motorhome that had so rudely locked me out. In one glance, he assessed the situation, got a flashlight and a long, hooked thingamajig from his array of tools, stepped over to the RV window and in one deft movement unlocked the door. It may have taken a full minute! After my hero had put away his tools, he got a cigarette out of his breast pocket, a pen and sales pad from his van and proceeded to have a leisurely smoke while he wrote up my receipt. A friendly chat ensued. He told me that after an arduous day of lockout calls from customers within a 50-mile radius of Page, he’d settled in for the night. In fact, he was in the shower when the call came and it would have gone to voicemail. By “happy chance,” his wife (who normally would have been out at a class but decided to stay home) took the call, and told him I was locked out of my RV. Such a wonderful turn of events led me to believe that life on the American highway is, indeed, filled with serendipity. And before my hero in pajamas left, I bought a magnetic spare key box from him. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Breakfast of Champions by linda mcgirr Linda McGirr is a Registered Dietitian and certified Dietitian-Nutritionist

ost of us have heard the term “breakfast of champions.” For professional truck drivers, championing a healthy breakfast presents a unique set of challenges. The chaotic schedule of driving may inhibit regular eating habits. Yet, there are a lot of reasons why making the time and effort for a healthy breakfast can make the days and nights go more smoothly – not to mention the health benefits. Breakfast, as the first meal of the day, breaks the “fast” of not having eaten after, hopefully, a good night’s sleep. Some of us wake up ravenous while others require a little time to work up an appetite. That first meal of the day doesn’t have to be eaten immediately upon rising, although there’s evidence to suggest that consuming food within an hour or so of waking helps keep

blood sugar levels even, insulin production steady and hunger lower. The body does need energy after a period of fasting, however, so despite any lack of enthusiasm, the need is there for nourishment to allow us to do our jobs effectively. Besides getting rid of hunger, what are the benefits to eating a healthy breakfast? Let’s look at some. Refueling: Energy is needed for the body to function properly, but the brain also needs refueling. Your brain does not store energy reserves, so it needs a fresh supply of glucose, its main energy source. Replenishing it by eating is important in order to sustain mental alertness, a vital requirement for those on the road. Healthy weight: Eating breakfast may reduce hunger later in the day. This can help reduce overeating, which

can, in turn, reduce your risk for weight gain. Members of the National Weight Control Registry, a group of more than 3,000 people who have successfully lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least three years, report that eating breakfast is one key to their success, with 78 percent of members reporting eating breakfast every day. Better Health: When you eat breakfast, statistics indicate that you are more likely to eat a healthier diet overall. Intake of vitamins, minerals and fiber tends to be higher for those who regularly eat a morning meal. Breakfast offers a jumpstart for fitting enough fruit, vegetables, whole grains and calciumrich foods into the day. Improved attitude: Eating breakfast is linked to a better attitude toward work, as well as an improved ability to handle tasks that require memory, like following driving directions. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Breakfast can be done on the run

Even if you have the time for a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, juice and coffee, it still adds up to a bunch of calories and fat. A simple, more nutritious start is a far better choice on a regular basis. The guideline that I teach second graders, who are just beginning to learn about nutrition, is to eat a breakfast that contains three food groups. This is a good habit for lifelong breakfast consumption. Remember, breakfast does not always have to consist of “breakfast foods.” You can eat what you like and still get a good start by remembering these basic concepts: • Choose low-fat dairy products. • Fruits and vegetables are almost always a good idea. • Go for whole grains. • Lean meats, beans, nuts and seeds are good sources of protein. • Go easy on fats and sweets. With that said, prepare yourself for an easy, healthy breakfast by stocking some of these items in your cab, cooler or fridge. Keep a knife on hand to allow for quick preparation.

w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

• Fresh fruits, such as berries, bananas, apples, oranges, cut-up pineapple and melon, and grapes • Sealable plastic bags filled with cut-up vegetables and lettuce • A tomato • Dried fruits, such as raisins, cranberries and apricots • Unsalted nuts and sunflower seeds • Your favorite crunchy cereal • Packets of plain, instant oatmeal • English muffins, bagel thins, tortillas, and bran muffins • Toaster waffles • Peanut butter • Low-fat, plain yogurt, and low-fat cottage, ricotta or sliced cheese • Lean, sliced deli meats such as turkey and ham • Hard-cooked eggs

• A shaker of cinnamon

What to do with all this stuff? • Top a toaster waffle with low-fat yogurt and fresh fruit slices. • Roll up a tortilla with peanut butter and banana slices.

• Make a sandwich out of an English muffin, ham and tomato. • Stuff a pita with a sliced hard-cooked egg and low-fat cheese. Eat it with a bunch of grapes. • Make instant oatmeal with low-fat milk instead of water and top it with dried cranberries and chopped walnuts. • Layer low-fat plain yogurt with berries and your favorite crunchy cereal. • Put deli turkey and lettuce on a bagel. • Have a bran muffin and low-fat yogurt topped with berries. • Heat up some leftover rice and mix with chopped apples, nuts and cinnamon. • Speaking of leftovers, have a slice of leftover veggie or lean meat pizza or a small portion of whatever you had for dinner the night before.

In the transportation field, days and nights can be long and free time can be short. Prepare yourself by breaking your fast like a champion. Eating a healthy meal at the start of your day can only make your life a little healthier and happier. You will feel better, have more energy and start with a better attitude. Challenge yourself to give it a try and reap the health benefits.

3-d archery by brenda potts

f only I knew then what I know now. How many times have you made that statement? I just got off the phone with my friend Jennie Richardson. We hadn’t talked in quite awhile and when I asked her what she had been up to I was impressed with her answer. She is now executive director of the Scholastic Archery Association (doing business as Scholastic 3D Archery). After hearing all about her new organization, I briefly wondered how my life might have been different if this had been around when I was a kid. My dad got us started in archery back when I was in grade school. My whole family shot archery together, grandparents included. We went to tournaments all around the state and competed in our respective divisions. We shot recurve bows. Modern compound bows and all the accessories were just being invented and slowly accepted. Back in my younger days, we didn’t have the three-dimensional targets offered today. We shot at paper targets secured to straw bales. Some targets had photographs of animals. We did walk through a course set up in

I

44 C H A L L E N G E A U G U S T 2 0 1 4

fields and woods and shot at undetermined distances. If you missed, you could lose an arrow. Looking for the arrow could risk a nasty run-in with poison ivy or snakes. We once discovered a nest of baby snakes in the top of one of the straw bales. I don’t think they survived the tournament. Jennie spent years working with the National Archery in the Schools program, introducing thousands of kids to the sport of archery, but she wanted something more. When the kids graduated from high school they either put away their bows or sold them and left the sport for other endeavors. Jennie wanted to take those NASP kids and introduce them to the sport of 3-D archery. Her dream is coming to fruition and, so far, is a resounding success. As kids begin to enjoy the 3-D competitions they have a revelation. The vast majority want to go on to experience bow hunting. This was an unexpected result of the program and will most likely call for a new mentorship program, or a network of certified coaches teaching bow hunting. Jennie is brainstorming with her board to come up

with a solution. In the meantime, the Scholastic 3-D Archery program is growing and the rest of the archery industry is taking notice. Sponsors are coming on board. Toward the end of my phone call Jennie mentioned there are now 76 colleges offering scholarships to kids shooting compound bows with releases and sights. I was shocked. If this had been available in my day I would have jumped at the opportunity. Perhaps I would have gone to a different college; majored in something different; met different people … who knows. Not that I am unhappy with my life’s path, but one does wonder what might have been. One thing is for sure, I am excited to learn about these new opportunities available for my grandkids. To think they may be able to take their love of archery and advance to competitive 3-D shooting, which may lead to attending college on a 3-D archery scholarship, is exciting. If you have a youngster in the family interested in shooting bows and arrows, be sure to look into the Scholastic Archery Association and their 3D Scholastic Archery program at www.s3da.org. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

The drivers, however, assured us that even as they became parents they would still be insanely driven to pilot on the ragged edge of disaster. Sam Hornish Jr. finished second in the Nationwide race at Michigan in June. He headed straight from my post-race interview with him to a children’s party at the Motor Racing Outreach (MRO) playground in the motor coach lot. His kids threw water balloons at him, and put shaving cream on his face to see how many cheese puffs they could throw and stick to him in the MRO “Dad Olympics.” Truces between drivers after on-track incidents have been negotiated in that MRO playground this season.

After winning at Michigan in June, Johnson’s No. 48 Sprint Cup team held their fingers up in silence during the hat dance in victory lane instead of yelling “woo” each time a photo was shot. Reason? Johnson’s youngest daughter, Lydia, had cried earlier and the team instinctively adapted to having a baby in victory lane. The NASCAR pre-race starting grid each week has become family playtime as the photo corps giddily snaps away. Yet instantly, the proud driving dads turn into high-speed risk takers, putting their helmets on, strapping into their cars, kissing their wife and kids and racing at up to, and sometimes over 200 mph. “It’s a lot of fun. Teaching someone how to go through life, watching (son) Keelan make mistakes and learn things and talk. It’s all very gratifying,” says Kevin Harvick. But what about the fishbowl they live in? “We get to see our kids more than most people get to see them because we’re fortunate enough to take him on our own airplane and take him in the bus and to the track,” explains Harvick. “I want him to know what I do and be around and experi-

ence the situations that I experience and not be shy about being anywhere. He’s so young, he’s still a little bit nervous around all the people and all the cars and there’s a lot going on in the NASCAR garage. “Honestly, I don’t even know if I’m supposed to take him in there, but I do anyway. I love it just for the fact that he likes to be around his dad and around his mom and to be able to share that at the race track is special.” Harvick and wife, Delana, also admit they enjoy sharing Keelan. “I’m not scared about people taking pictures or shaking his hand or picking him up. I want him to be fun and relaxed and be around people just like we are. It’s not like we’re Hollywood movie stars with paparazzi around our house,” he says. Has Keelan turned him into a softie at times? Harvick grins at the question and then turns back into race car driver mode. “On the race track, you don’t want to take crap from anybody and you want to do what you have to do, in my case, to make your job the best it can be and you want to have things go how they are supposed to and the only way you can do that is to take charge yourself,” says Harvick. “So, the perception of (me) being a hard ass at the race track is probably true, but at home you kind of go with the flow and just try to do the right things and make the environment right.” But Harvick softens when asked what his son does to make him melt. “Probably his laugh,” he says. “When you can make him laugh. Even at night, when I’m on the road by myself, I’ll go back and watch videos (of Keelan) just because it makes you smile and puts you in a good mood before you go to sleep.” Then, when he wakes up in the morning, he takes to the track and is relentless. Tough racer, and warm-hearted dad.

Tweaking Hours of Service by mike howe Twitter: @TruckingDC • Facebook: www.facebook.com/TruckingPoliticsMore

ours-of-service (HOS) rules are once again being looked at and it appears a much-needed tweak to the rules is on the horizon. Are you surprised? Interestingly, it’s not the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that is reopening the rules for consideration, but rather Congress that has chosen to listen to and potentially address concerns raised by the trucking industry. This alone is quite telling. The segment, or at least one portion, of the HOS rules the trucking industry has wanted addressed deals with the restart provisions. The current rule states that drivers must rest for at least 34 hours after working a 70-hour week, and the rest times must include two periods between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Both the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) and the American Trucking Association (ATA) were pleased when Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced an amendment to the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill that would suspend the restart rules’ time-of-day restrictions and once-per-week cap for one year. During this time, the FMCSA would be directed to study the impacts of the rules and make necessary changes. “We thank Sen. Collins and the supportive members of the committee for their work on this important amendment,” said OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer. “Truckers have long pointed out the negative impacts of the 2013 changes on their

ability to get rest, stay out of busy city traffic, spend time at home, and make a familysupporting income.” OOIDA and others within the trucking industry have clearly communicated all the shortcomings, with Spencer saying FMCSA can’t simply regulate based upon guesses. “[FMCSA] should not make a regulatory decision and then create data after the fact that supports the decision,” he said. “Sadly, the problems with the hours-of-service rulemaking are common within the FMCSA and we hope that today’s vote is a sign that Congress will be taking a deeper look into the way the agency conducts its business.” “Since these rules were proposed in 2010, ATA has maintained that they were unsupported by science, and since they were implemented in 2013, the industry and economy have experienced substantial negative effects as a result,” said Bill Graves, president and CEO of ATA. “Today, thanks to Sen. Collins’ leadership, we are a step closer to reversing these damaging, unjustified regulations.” The U.S. House of Representatives has also been taking a look at HOS and the FMCSA. The House Appropriations Committee wants to study the 34-hour restart rule, but without suspending it. The committee also directed the FMCSA to implement the GAO recommendations to the Compliance, Safety, and Accountability Program. The agency is to revise the program’s methodology to better account for data limitations that prevent meaningful comparisons of safety performance of motor carriers. The agency is also to conduct a formal analysis of what the limitations are to the data used to arrive at scores, and the limitations of the scores in identifying unsafe motor carriers. These directives go into effect only if their version of the funding bill passes or if these are included in the joint bill that passes. Tweaking the restart provision also has the support of former Federal Highway Safety Administrator Annette Sandberg, who, in a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee, argued that highway safety would be improved as a result of Collins’ amendment. Where we go from here remains to be seen. It’s an election year, and appropriation bills during an election year are often used as political fodder, so whether a bill even passes will be an interesting test. It is clear, though, that FMCSA has caught the attention of both chambers in Congress, in addition to a united industry (at least on this issue). It’s time for FMCSA to listen to those who operate the trucks and keep this great nation rolling. Nobody cares more about highway safety than the trucking industry, after all. w w w. p t c c h a l l e n g e . c o m

Simple Act of Kindness

here is a little something to be said about the brotherhood and camaraderie within our industry. On a daily basis, we encounter opportunities to put others’ needs before our own. Whether it is a four-wheeler on the side of the off-ramp with a flat tire or a fellow driver needing help into a tight spot, we encounter instances to help others on a regular basis. Sure, it’s easy to just sit there in the comfort of your climate-controlled cab and watch, or even pass by that stranded vehicle and go about your own day. For a moment, however, you can feel like a hero for something that cost you no more than a few minutes of your time. It was a hot August day about seven years ago when the company truck I was driving decided to finally leave me stranded. It was an existing problem the shop had been keep-

ing tabs on that had finally run its course. So there I was, on a desolate stretch of Highway 395, somewhere right smack between the Pilot Travel Center at Four Corners and the town of Adelanto, California. The engine would not start, so there was no way to run my A/C in the blistering 100-degree desert heat. Thank goodness this was a main corridor for the small company I ran for, which made me visible to some of my friends. Of all the drivers I thought would pull over or shout out to see what was wrong, it was the one I least expected to do so that did actually pull over. He asked if there was anything I needed, gave me a cold bottle of water out of his ice chest and made sure that I had help on the way. Just five minutes out of his day, and his simple act of kindness lifted my spirits and made me feel better about a crummy situation.

In these hot summer months, consider getting out of your “comfort zone.” It may brighten the day of someone in the best possible way, helping out a fellow trucker on the road with something as simple as cold water, soda or a snack. When it happened to me, I was on my last load home for the day, which meant I was low on supplies in my ice chest. I had no more water or Gatorade, and only a small bag of potato chips for food. It was a lesson learned, too. Now I carry a full set of tools, extra coolant, oil, drinks and food just in case I get a chance to lend a helping hand. You never know, the next person that could use a cool drink stranded out in the hot sun may be you.

Rusty Old Chains BY David Bayreuther

Was it not I that held out a hand for a brother that was down? And was it not I that set out extra for the stranger that comes ‘round? Am I still the sinner that feels no grace? Is there a storm in the valley I am yet to face? I ask not to be rewarded with silver and gold, All deeds have been done and each I’ve told. I ask only these chains be removed, then I shall be free. Will my place in the Promised Land be held there just for me? I pray for strength to carry my load. For I am not without temptation on this long and solitary road. These old chains tug at my soul. Is it possibly the recognition of my good for which I toll?

These are the faces of Pilot Flying J who have excelled in customer service

Randy Bell • Crawfordsville, IN “I am writing to you regarding outstanding service that I received from an employee of yours,” wrote a customer. “I only got his first name of Randy. I am an insurance adjuster and spend a lot of time in my car. Today was a cold and rainy day, and I was driving from Indianapolis to Darlington for an appointment. When I exited Interstate 74 onto SR32 I realized I had a problem with my tire. I pulled into the Pilot gas station and approached the air machine. Before I could get my car put into park, Randy offered his assistance. He aired up my tire for me, but unfortunately it was too far gone and blew out. Randy put my spare tire on for me. He was so kind. I deal with the public a lot and I usually don’t see this type of customer service from people. I just wanted to make sure you knew what an amazing employee you have working with you. Thank you!”

Making Life Better for Professional Drivers Pilot Flying J made a significant contribution to Trucking Moves America Forward (TMAF), an industry-wide movement that aims to create a positive image for the industry. With the United States Capitol in the background, Pilot Flying J donated $1.25 million to TMAF over the next five years. The partnership kicked off with a press conference where several initiatives between Pilot Flying J and TMAF were addressed, including substantial health–related programming. “Pilot Flying J anticipates expanding our popular health initiatives and Road Warrior driver–engagement campaign throughout the entire industry, utilizing TMAF’s wide–ranging network of professional drivers, owner‐ operators, technicians and more,” said James A. Haslam II, founder of Pilot Flying J. “Our travel centers also reach millions of people annually, and we are excited to share in telling the trucking movement’s story with such a vibrant, all–encompassing program.” Haslam was joined on stage during the check presentation by noteworthy figures from both the state of Tennessee and the trucking industry, including Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Rep. John Duncan, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, the American Trucking Association’s Governor Graves, representatives from the Truckload Carriers Association and numerous other trucking executives. “We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation as Pilot Flying J plays a key role in reaching millions of Americans and this partnership illustrates how committed we are – as an industry – to telling trucking’s positive stories,” said Mike Card, TMAF fundraising chair and president of Combined Transport, Inc. “The trucking industry is essential to the well– being of America’s economy, as we exclusively serve more than 82 percent of all our country’s communities and employ more than 7 million people.” TMAF was launched in March at the Mid-America Trucking Show, and in April, TMAF shared that it had raised more than a half-million dollars since its official launch. The Pilot Flying J donation is the largest donation to date. For more information or to get involved with the cause, visit www.truckingmovesamerica.com

Driver Profile:

Blair Jourdonais ’m from Texas originally, but I’ve lived in Kentucky now for 14 years. I used to be an owner-operator, but now I’m a company driver for Stellar Express and have been with them for almost two years. I currently drive local pulling a tanker. We drive in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Illinois. I am 32, have a wonderful partner and three kids. I’ve been using the MyRewards card since it came out. I used it before Pilot and Flying J merged as well, so a total of 10 years. My most frequented Pilot is in Franklin, Kentucky. It’s in our route so it’s quick to stop there. I usually don’t use the showers because I am local. However, I donate them to drivers if I see someone go to pay cash for one. I use the coffee club in the winter. I have three out of nine drinks right now. I don’t drink many hot beverages with it being hot. I noticed Pilot now started something similar to Love’s. They’re offering a $10 reward if you fuel up a certain amount of gallons within a time frame. I think that’s a great idea. I use the points to pay for food and drinks.
