He was 80 years young when he made his transition on September 28, 2023. A Celebration of Life and Legacy services will be held Saturday, October 14 at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 141 Adams Street, Rochester. Viewing from 10a.m.-12p.m. with funeral services starting immediately after. He was born on June 5, 1943, to the late Walter L. Blount Sr. and Helen Wilson Blount of Smithfield, Virginia. His publication efforts illuminated little-known facts and personalities, told positive stories about the African-American experience, and established a foundation for literary and journalistic research. BUFFALO BILLS SPORTS UPDATE
Bills Squished the Fish Again! he Buffalo Bills versus Miami Dolphins game did not disT appoint fans at all with plenty of big plays and hard hits wrapped up into one game.
Stefon Diggs abused Dolphin’s cornerback Kader Kohou all day long. The Bills, Dolphins and Chiefs are currently the best teams in the AFC. The Bills opening season loss to the New York Jets just might be a blessing in disguise because they seemed to have cleaned up several areas that were deficient. The Bills Special teams have improved especially on punts and kick off coverage. Guys stayed in their lanes and pursued the returner until a text book like tackle was made on the play. Bills wide receiver and special teamer Trent Sherfield said, “ I just want to treat this week’s game like just another normal game . It’s not really me but Siran Neal and ‘Dirty Red’ Tyler Matakevich our Special Teams Captain. Dorian Williams, a rookie, is playing his butt off right now and we preach all three phases of the game (offense, defense & special teams). A big shout to him (Williams) because he’s playing at a very high level.” The Bills offensive line is starting to jell with excellent run blocking and pass protection improving each week. Josh Allen is getting more comfortable under center instead of always being in the shotgun position. That’s a significant move by Bills Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey to help increase the comfort level of his QB by having him under center. This bolds well for late in games a kneel down or hand off is called for Josh Allen won’t fumble the ball away like he did in the Minnesota Vikings game last year. Bills running back James Cook is showing good durability and is finding running lanes to go through along with bruising backs Damien Harris and Latavius Murray to pick up key yardage as the leaves continue to change colors. The Bills did lose all pro cornerback Tre’Davious White for the season due to a torn Achilles tendon and next man up will be Kaiir Elam and possibly former University of Buffalo Bull Ja’Marcus Ingram from the practice squad. Elam, the Bills former number one draft pick can fill the role and we look forward to his bump and run style of playing up on the opposing receiver. I like both of these cornerbacks and both performed well last season and in training camp at St. John Fisher this past summer.
Stefon Diggs TD reception. Challenger Photo By David Jones.
The Bills have a tall task on their hands this week with a trip to London England and a meeting with the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills defensive unit should be able to stop the run and make the Jaguars one dimensional with QB Trevor Lawrence throwing into Bills coverages. I see a week of ground and pound the football against a 19th ranked team in giving up yards, and points. But I predict the Bills will pick up the pace and come out smoking in the second half leading to the Bills taming the Jaguars 31-17.

ih the temperature in the 70s last Sunday afternoon, local businessman Myran Horton picked the perfect day - and the perfect game - for a Bills Tailgate party outside his G&B Fish, Shrimp and Chicken Restaurant located at 1532 Genesee Street (he's been at that location since August of 2019). The visionary young entrepreneur said Sunday's gathering also served to introduce folks to the new banquet hall he's having built. n 2020 Common Council President Darius Pridgen received a letter from Mekhi Edwards, a then 17-year old senior at the Frederick Law Olmsted school, suggesting that the city name a street Black Lives Matter to create awareness and bring the community together in the wake of the horrific murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by the Minneapolis Police . Council President Darius Pridgen, moved by the letter, responded and introduced a resolution calling for a street in the city to bear that name. That street was Fillmore Avenue, which runs largely through the Black community’s Masten District. It was a fitting choice given the fact it was named after Buffalo’s own Millard Fillmore, who as president of the United Sates, signed the Fugitive Slave Act into Law. For more than 70 years, these federal laws rendered all Black people in America “slaves until proven free” and facilitated the kidnapping and enslavement of thousands of Black men, women and children. That same year UB removed Fillmore’s name from campus locations. On October 13, 2020 at The Buffalo City Common Council unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Council President Pridgen, Masten District Council Member Nowakowski, Masten District Council Member Wingo and University Council Member Wyatt. It was then signed by Mayor Brown to name a portion of Fillmore Avenue 'Black Lives Matter Way.' The newly named section would be from Fillmore and Main to Fillmore and Seneca Street where, according to our research, "Black Lives Matter Way" signs were to be applied along the length of Fillmore. That was three years ago. Today there’s still nothing to indicate that change – most notably the street signs. Interestingly enough, when the resolution was passed, there was no time frame on when the street signs would be added or changed. We placed a call to the Council President’s office on Monday and spoke to someone regarding the resolution and are waiting for a response. It is our hope- and trust - that we will see that change take place soon. Black lives still matter. -Staff Writer-

Marsha McWilson Day & Anti-Gun Violence Rally in Niagara Falls Join McWilson and Her Family in Honoring the Life of Their Son Jaylan McWilson and Others Lost to Gun Violence When international recording artist Marsha McWilson traveled to the Aug. 26 commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, it sparked something personal inside. The march took place in a national atmosphere of rampant gun violence. Having lost her son Jaylen to gun violence earlier this year, McWilson said she felt “ignited because I connected with others who went through the same story…It gave me comfort knowing I’m not alone.”Since losing her son, McWilson has taken the time to support other families who have unexpectedly lost loved ones. This weekend, as the City of Niagara Falls celebrates the international recording artist on Marsha McWilson Day Saturday, Oct. 7, Marsha is also taking that opportunity to spearhead an Anti-Gun Violence Rally on that same day Marsha McWilson from 12noon to 4 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church at 1366 South Ave. There will be live music from national recording artists, motivational speakers, refreshments, a balloon launch, food trucks and more. Her experience has also led her to work on a new song titled "A Mother's Cry" along with teaching life lessons in the Niagara Falls School District. "My son's life will not be in vain," she declared.
Mother Dies. Son is Still Missing
Jaylen Griffin was last seen on August 4, 2020. He was just 12 years old when he left his Warren Avenue home in the Broadway-Fillmore district near Central Terminal. He has not been seen since despite a host of community led search parties, vigils and awareness campaigns including billboards to find him. According to news reports, a new search was launched by police last year using cadaver dogs, but still no trace of the missing Jaylen. Funeral services were recently held for Jaylen’s mother, Joann Ponzo, without her ever knowing what happened to her son.

The Wooten Brothers Take Over the CMC International Jazz Festival October 14!
he Colored Musicians Club presents their annual International Jazz Festival and this year the esteemed talents of Grammy award winning Victor Wooten and the Wooten Brothers will take over the festival at the Villa Maria Auditorium on October 14! The Wooten Brothers bring an uncanny level of experience, originality, and musical expertise to the stage. Their high energy and ultra funky performances are a unique blend of styles including original songs and classics. In short: these brothers are the real deal , something that the CMC never fails to deliver each year for their one of a kind festival . For over four decades the Wooten Brothers have been recognized as some of the most innovative musicians in existence and are collectively known as one of the most talented and dynamic band of brothers the world has ever known. Sons of military parents, since they were young, the five brothers have been a musical tour-de-force redefining the limits of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, rock, and bluegrass. The influence of their early years spent living in different states including Hawaii, California, and Virginia where they shared stages with legends like Curtis Mayfield, The Temptations, Ramsey Lewis, Stephanie Mills, War, and other artists is evident in their musicianship . In the mid 80’s, the brothers released an album as The Wooten’s for Clive Davis’ Arista Records. “We are honored and excited to welcome the supremely talented Wooten Brothers this year for our International Jazz Festival. They will also be conducting a youth workshop/ Q&A at Villa that Saturday afternoon,” says Linda Appleby, Colored Musicians Club board member. The Wooten brothers are no strangers to Buffalo. “The last time they came together for a concert in Buffalo was in 2013 at the Tralf, where they received a proclamation from Mayor Byron Brown for their outstanding accolades as not only musicians, but as humanitarians as well, continued Appleby. Victor Wooten, known as the clan’s most famous son, is widely considered to be one of the foremost working bassists today. He made his appearance with his original bass concerto
Pictured l/r Victor, bass guitar/vocals; Joseph, keyboards/vocals; Roy, percussion/vocals; and Regi, guitars/vocals
at Kleinhan’s Music Hall under the direction of Joann Falletta in 2017. Upon finishing his brilliant debut, he went to Pausa House, where he met Marcus Lolo, Jacob Jaye, and others, where he freely shared his words of wisdom to a very attentive group of young musicians. Last year Victor included Buffalo’s own internationally known bass player Zuri Appleby on one of his teaching podcasts for his students from around the world. He is known for giving back to students in music and the community at every opportunity. Joseph Wooten worked in Buffalo with Linda Appleby first as a guest artist with the acclaimed Buffalo Select Chorus, (20042011), and then as a guest speaker and performer for over 40 area Buffalo public and Charter Schools for 6 years as part of the Artist in Residency Program. During the course of those years, Joseph could be seen performing at DBGB’S with Michael DiSanto and Verse, and/or at the Colored Musicians Club for their weekly Sunday Jam sessions with musicians we all know and love like Rod Bonner, Walter Kemp, Kenny Hawkins, Rishon Northington, Jerry Livingston, Tony Robinson, Earl Roberson, Juuni Booth and others. Brothers Elijah “The Teacha” (Reggi), the oldest among them (who is said to have started the band) and Roy, are both phenomenal world class musicians, writers, and teachers as well. You can expect the Wooten Brothers to be on deck signing merch and taking photos with the audience . Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the power of the industry most musical band of brothers gracing the Villa Maria Auditorium Stage, 240 Pine Ridge road October 14 at 7- 9p.m. . The Confidence Corner!
W
elcome to The Confidence Corner, where we aim to elevate your selfesteem and confidence. I am Tiffany R. Lewis, a licensed wellness advisor, mentor, and motivational speaker, and the creator of National Youth Confidence Day. This day is celebrated every year on October 20th to honor the resilience, drive, and accomplishments of young people. By TIFFANY R. sharing stories and insights, my goal is to empower you to overLEWIS come self-doubt and accomplish your personal and professional aspirations with confidence and grace. Today, I would like to bring to light two fundamental topics for young women: girls' empowerment and self-esteem. Girls' empowerment and self-esteem involve helping young women recognize their potential, worth, and abilities. It is also about providing them with the abilities and opportunities to pursue their aspirations and objectives. Sadly, many young ladies face bias, discrimination, and violence in today's society. By empowering girls and improving their self-esteem, we can assist them in resisting peer pressure, dealing with stress, and overcoming obstacles. Studies demonstrate that high self-esteem is linked to positive outcomes in various aspects of life, such as academic achievement, mental health, relationships, and leadership. Conversely, low selfesteem can cause depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and self-harm. Young women with low self-esteem are also more vulnerable to bullying, sexual harassment, and abuse. So, how can we empower young ladies and enhance their self-esteem? Here are great ways: •Encourage young girls to explore their passions and talents and provide positive role models who inspire and demonstrate what is possible. • Create safe environments for young women to express themselves freely and authentically, as well as to share their thoughts, emotions, and experiences with others who respect and value them. • Teach young women about their rights and responsibilities as global citizens and empower them to take action on issues that matter to them. • Help young women cope with traumatic experiences that may impact their self-esteem and well-being. If you have any questions or want to share your own experiences, please feel free to contact me at tlewis@imageignite360.com. Please remember that you are powerful, valuable, and capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. You are not alone on your journey. You have a community of supporters who believe in you and want you to succeed. With confidence.!

The events took place at 1423 Black Lives Matter Way (Fillmore Ave.) in the CAO Masten Resource Center. The events were organized in conjunction PHAM (People Helping All Mankind) to help communities and residents on the Eastside address the looming problem which is partially due to homes deteriorating while stuck in housing court. Also, evidence was supplied that this problem exists due to the city of Buffalo not having an adequate demolition policy which will prevent neighborhoods from failing below 51% density levels, along with the City of Buffalo not having adequate policies for rebuilding structures that have been demolished. Failure to rebuild demolished homes has created large amounts of vacant lots. During the presentation Ms. Harris explained to the audience how to file a New York State Department of Financial Services Complaint to combat these types of problems. She shared the New York Department of Financial Services can fine banks $500 per day for failure to maintain vacant homes. She also explained how to file a Community Liaison/Block Club complaint form, which will allow neighbors of vacant properties to testify in housing court about how vacant properties negatively impact them. As a result of the meetings participants expressed the desire to form two groups. One group wants to solve the problem by writing policy and developing petitions. The other desires to learn more about acquiring and investing in the properties. The group that wants to address policy is anticipating a formal meeting on a date to be announced. Ms. Harris has also arranged for a joint presentation with NAREB (National Association of Real Estate Brokers) Erie-Niagara Board of Realtist to provide a community education meeting about investing in properties on November 1st at 6pm at the Merriweather Library. All are invited to attend. NAREB, the local chapter which is ENBOR (Black Real Estate Professionals) will also have a press conference on October 13th from 1-3pm also at the Merriweather Library. Send RSVP to info@ENBOR.org to reserve your spot. (See page 5) This collective is gradually evolving with passion to solve these types of problems. Prior meetings were also held with former NYS Senator Antoine Thompson. The community is invited to these free gatherings on the last Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is scheduled for October 31, at 1423 Black Lives Matter Way (Fillmore Ave) in the CAO Masten Resource Center. Marshaun L. Quinniey of MLQ Developments also heads PHAM (People Helping All Mankind.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“No matter how rich or powerful you are, there are not two sets of laws for people in this country. The rule of law must apply equally to everyone, and it is my responsibility to make sure that it does.” -New York Attorney General Letitia James commenting on the Trial Against Donald Trump

The Name 'Freedom Park' Has A Nice Ring To It
L
ong before the year 2000, when Buffalo's East Ferry Street became officially known as the site of one of the worse Class 2 Toxic Waste sites in the area, we already knew about the creek beneath it that flowed from it orgin in the Town of Cheektowaga, to a second toxic waste site just off Niagara Street on Buffalo's Westside. Due to the interventions of clear minded legislators such as Buffalo Councilmembers Antoine Thompson, Beverly A Gray, this writer, county and state legislators Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Byron Brown and others, the Eastside sections of Ferry Street were remediated and is now home to a large group of low income and senior residents in need of cheap, safe affordable housing for their families. So, it should come to no surprise that Ferry Street is once again in the limelight. From the tree- lined street that is known as West Ferry from Main Street, to the Foot of Ferry where the street meets the Buffalo River, Ferry Street is indeed likened to a Charles Dicken's novel called A Tale of Two Cities. In 1901, at the height of Buffalo's prominence, West Ferry St. was home to a group of Millionaires that made Buffalo number one in the nation's ranking of cities with the most millionaires per capital. And just on the Eastside of Main Street, between Main St. and Bailey Ave, some of the most impoverished residents of the city reside in housing that is substandard and way below the national poverty-stricken index. And yet, through all this, a Phoenix arises. The end of West Ferry Street and Broderick Park are being considered for a name change. This name change is being considered and supported because of the park's close association and proximity with the Underground Railroad network and its use in providing sanctuary and shelter to those fugitive slaves trying to escape to Canada and freedom. Enslaved persons either dove into the cold and fast moving current of the river and attempted to swim across or they waited for darkness to hide them as they emerged from Safe Houses in the area and 'stole' away to the Canadian Shores in the distance. Special thanks goes to community activist George Johnson, who is the President and CEO of Friends of Broderick Park, for putting forth and spearheading this truly worthwhile and timely initiative to rename Broderick Park, to Freedom Park.. After a series of public meetings, the Resolution for the name change from Broderick Park to Freedom Park, will be put forth for a vote. As many are trying to diminish the struggles and or contributions of persons of African descent, all across this country let the bells of freedom. righteous and justice ring loud and clear, not just in Broderick Park now but in Freedom Park, in the future, for years to come.
Comptroller Miller-Williams Responds To Demand for City-Wide Audit of Employees on Paid Leave in Wake of $600,000 Controversy Ed Note:After the Investigative Post’s bombshell story by Geoff Kelly exposing how the city paid Jill Repman, an administrative assistant for the Buffalo Fire Department city worker nearly $600,000 since suspending her in 2016 when she was accused of tampering with the department’s payroll to pad her check, Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams announced that she was launching an investigation into the matter. Following is her response to Council Member Nowakowski's demand for a City-wide audit of employees on paid leave. “On September 14th, I was notified of an article written by Mr. Geoff Kelly, Investigative Post, entitled, "City Hall Clerk Paid Not to Work." As a result of comments made by Council Member Nowakowski, Fillmore District, in the article. I attempted to contact him via his cell phone to further discuss his concerns. A second unsuccessful attempt to reach him was made on September 19th, whereby I left a message with his staff in an effort to work with him to discuss all his concerns regarding the aforementioned City Employee matter. As has always been the case, I continue to remain transparent and will work with all Council Members and interested parties relating to City finances. “In addition, on September 19th, I was contacted by Mr. Geoff Kelly, Investigative Post, and notified of a Resolution that was sponsored by Council Members Nowakowski and Rivera, and an Investigative Post news which was discussed at the recent Common Council Session. Both submissions referenced an allegation of impropriety by a City Employee assigned to the Buffalo Fire Department. It is my understanding that this matter was discovered and reported by the Department of Audit and Control personnel in February 2016, yet it was not fully addressed by the former Comptroller and the Administration. “As the Comptroller, rest assured that our Department of Audit and Control takes all accusations of misconduct seriously and is committed to a factual based process of resolution. Therefore, effective September 15th, 2023, I initiated a City-wide investigation of all employees that are currently on Leave of Absence with Pay. According to our records since July 1st, 2023, there were twelve out of approximately 3,000 employees in the Leave of Absence with Pay category. An Investigation will provide the required information in an expeditious manner, unlike an Audit which can take several months to complete. The purpose of the investigation will be to determine what went wrong and who should be held responsible to account for the current situation to include all involved City Employees as well as ensuring that no such system failures will occur in the future. The confidential Financial Protection Hotline continues to be available to everyone that would like to anonymously report financial misconduct at 716-851-8779.”

On Second Thought . . .
The Bills Reel in the Fish!
T
he Buffalo Bills went deep sea fishing and reeled in their biggest catch of the season, in a convincing 48 – 20 victory over the Miami Dolphins. In the NFL’s premier game of the early season, the Bills landed a whopper. The story line going into this game was which team’s defense could do the best job of stopping the other team’s explosive offense. In a game that did not disappoint, the Bills and Dolphins
traded a pair of touchdowns each. Indeed, it appeared that the game was on its way to becoming a track meet, with both teams matching the other tit for tat. However, that all began to change after the Bills went up by a touchdown and then kicked off to Miami to see if they would match that TD, just as they had all contest long to that point. But that is where the game changed going from a veritable track meet to an eventual Bills rout.

It was at then that the Bills got their first defensive stop by forcing a Miami punt – only their fifth punt of the entire season. And after a combined five TD scores to that point in the game, the Bills defense had finally forced the Dolphins to blink. For the rest of the first half, the Bills proceeded to put the brakes on Miami’s mega talented offensive group by forcing two more first half punts. In the meantime, Buffalo continued its offensive onslaught, highlighted by a routine pass completion to Stefon Diggs, who stepped out of two would-be tackles to turn a short gain into a spectacular 55 yard TD jaunt. After that, it put the Bills up 28 -14. They went on add a 53 yard Tyler Bass field goal with just seconds left to end the half with the Bills comfortably ahead 31 -14. Although it looked as if the game might be over at halftime, the Dolphins are not a team that can ever be counted out simply because their offense is probably the closest thing yet to the LA Rams and their “greatest show on turf” last seen in the NFL in the early 2000s. But after halftime, the Dolphins went on a smartly executed 75 yard drive to register another TD of their own. After failing to score on a two-point conversion attempt, Miami had knocked Buffalo’s lead down to a manageable 11 point deficit, with plenty of time left. However, from then on, the Bills dominated on both sides of the football. But as productive as the Bills offense was all afternoon long, it was really the Bills defense that sealed the deal. With the Dolphins forced into a onedimensional pass attack, the Bills interior defensive line took over. Daquan Jones, Ed Oliver, Greg Rousseau, et al., led a relentless pass rush that simply overpowered Miami’s O-line. The Bills racked up four second half sacks, which put the game away. But as impressive, as this victory was, it came at a heavy cost. That is, the season ending Achilles injury to Tre’Davious White, the Bills outstanding veteran cornerback. Along with safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, White has been a cornerstone of Buffalo’s outstanding secondary, which has been one of the league’s finest ever since they joined forces seven years ago. The question now, is whether they can fill the void left
by White’s absence from the lineup. Fortunately, the Bills have some depth at the position with Dane Jackson and/or Kaiir Elam poised to step in. Next, the Bills travel across the pond to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. The Jags young quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, seems in line to become the next Top Gun QB in the NFL. The Bills will need to handle him, just as they did against Tua Tagovaiola and the Dolphins.
APOLOGIES! Sincere apologies to our esteembd and dedicated sports writer Greg Brown and his faithful readers for last week's error. What happened? The wrong file was inadvertently placed in his column!

Phone the office of Allyson Youdsavage (585-589-4854), a minimum of 72 hours in advance of the date to provide the names of those who will attend the pre-bid site visit. Only contractors that schedule a visit at least 72 hours in advance will be allowed to participate in the pre-bid site visit. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Article 15-A and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder, OGS is required to promote opportunities for the maximum feasible participation of New York State-certified Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (“MWBEs”) and the employment of minority group members and women in the performance of OGS contracts. All bidders are expected to cooperate in implementing this policy. OGS hereby establishes an overall goal of 30% for MWBE participation, 15% for Minority-Owned Business Enterprises (“MBE”) participation and 15% for Women-Owned Business Enterprises (“WBE”) participation (based on the current availability of qualified MBEs and WBEs). The total contract goal can be obtained by utilizing any combination of MBE and /or WBE participation for subcontracting and supplies acquired under this Contract. Trades with 0% goals are encouraged to make “good faith efforts” to promote and assist in the participation of MWBEs on the Contract for the provision of services and materials. Article 3 of the Veteran’s Services Law provides for more meaningful participation in public procurement by certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses (“SDVOBs”). Bidders are expected to consider SDVOBs in the fulfillment of the requirements of the Contract. Such participation may be as subcontractors or suppliers, as protégés, or in other partnering or supporting roles. OGS hereby establishes overall goals for SDVOBs’ participation under this contract as follows: 3% for the C trade contractor, based on the current availability of qualified SDVOBs. Trades with 0% goals are encouraged to make “good faith efforts” to promote and assist in the participation of SDVOBs on the Contract for the provision of services and materials. The Bidding and Contract Documents for this Project are available for viewing, downloading, and Electronic Bidding from OGS Design & Construction’s Electronic Bidding service, Bid Express.
