Complete Digitized Copy of The Frederick Douglass Voice Now Available!

The RMSC is excited to announce the completed digitization of one of the longest-running Black newspapers in New York, The Frederick Douglass Voice. These papers are now viewable and available to the public at rmsc.org as part of the Howard Wilson Coles Collection, housed by the RMSC.

Hosting this collection online was made possible through a grant from the Rochester Regional Library Council and in partnership with the Rochester Public Library’s Local History & Genealogy Division.

Howard W. Coles was owner and editor of The Frederick Douglass Voice. Coles served many roles in the Rochester community, as a groundbreaking Black newspaper journalist, as well as a historian, author, radio broadcaster, candidate for public office, and activist. He chronicled and influenced Rochester’s 20th-century Black community by showcasing literary, artistic, and intellectual achievements of community members. Through his publications, he documented culture, community activities, living conditions, and everyday occurrences and concerns of Rochester, spanning seven decades of lifting up and empowering citizens.

The newspaper was circulated for 63 years, from 1933 to 1996, and there are 350 original copies of The Frederick Douglass Voice in the RMSC Collection. The newspapers have served as an important primary resource for local scholars and thought leaders when researching important topics including redlining in Rochester and racism & resistance in the 3rd Ward. Digitizing The Frederick Douglass Voice removes barriers for scholars and the general public, making this documentation of the rich cultural heritage of Rochester’s Black community more accessible to researchers.

Issues of The Frederick Douglass Voice are now available on the RMSC Collections website

Major Youth Empowerment, Development, And Anti-Violence Initiative In The Fruit Belt

Nearly two dozen East Side youth, ages 13-20 under adult supervision and mentorship, are participating in a unique program, based at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in the Fruit Belt that focuses on empowerment and youth development with an anti-violence initiative.

The Buffalo Black Billion, LLC joined the Stop the Violence Coalition, the Erie County and City of Buffalo Summer Youth Department Programs, today for an update on the summer-long initiative whose goals are to address Family, Spirituality, Education, Recreation, Character Development, Civility, and Community with the selected youth.

Under Murray Holman, Stop the Violence Coalition director, the students are participating in the coalition’s “Give” component which involves eliminating guns in violence. Through the Buffalo Black Billion LLC the students have been going through sessions each day to build character, learn youth leadership skills, etiquette training, Green House gardening, agricultural planting and maintaining soil, fundamentals of boating and watercrafts, first aid and CPR training, developing their own podcast, learning to swim and becoming a life guard, obtaining a driver’s license and peer academic tutoring by a youth tutor.

“We have selected these youth and under adult supervision and mentorship, they have been learning and participating in key life skills every day this summer while earning a paycheck through the county and city’s summer youth programs. This helps them put food on their table at home and to feel a responsibility for what they are learning each day,” Holman explained. “This initiative has been great, and we are now working with the Buffalo Black Billion to explore ways we can continue this paid program year-round. We are seeing such positive results with these youth.”

Michael Norwood Sr., a representative for the Buffalo Black Billion, along with several of the participating youth, also spoke at the press conference Thursday morning.

Mexicans of African Descent Established Los Angeles in 1781

The Los Angeles Pobladores, or “townspeople,” were a group of 44 settlers and four soldiers from Mexico who established the famed city on July 3, 1781 in what is now California. The settlers came from various Spanish castes, with over half of the group being of African descent.

Governor of Las Californias, a Spanish-owned region, Felipe de Neve called on 11 families to help build the new city in the region by recruiting them from Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico. According to a census record taken at the time, there were two persons of African ancestry, eight Spanish and Black persons, and nine American Indians. There was also one Spanish and Indian person, with the rest being Spaniards.

According to the efforts of historian William M. Mason, the actual racial makeup of the pobladores was perhaps more racially balanced than not. Mason wrote that of the 44, only two were White, while 26 had some manner of African ancestry and that 16 of the group were “mestizos” or mixed Spanish and Indian people.

Black Mexicans Luis Quintero and Antonio Mesa, the only two named on the 1781 census, married mixed women and bore several children between them.

The Christian Case Against Trump?

A recent op-ed in the New York Times cited the Christian Case Against Trump. The author wrote in part,: In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on July 13, a video with images of Jesus crowned with thorns, blood running down his face, followed by photos of the former president circulated on social media. Days later, at the Republican National Convention, the evangelist Franklin Graham endorsed Mr. Trump from the stage, saying that “God spared his life.” But the idea of Mr. Trump as chosen by God has infuriated those evangelicals who believe that he stands in direct op-

position to their faith.

“We refuse to cede Scripture to the right,” Jonah Overton, a 37-year-old pastor from Milwaukee, told me.

Instead of casting Mr. Trump as a holy martyr, these Christians offer an alternative vision of him as an Antichrist, who abuses his power and in many ways resembles the emperors of Rome. (The Antichrist is sometimes likened to Nero, who persecuted Christians and sometimes crucified them.)

“The so-called evangelicals who support Trump have a Jesus problem,” Bishop William Barber II. Jesus advocated tirelessly for the poor and warned that nations would be judged “by how we treat the hungry, the sick, the incarcerated and the immigrant,” Bishop Barber said.

Finding Balance: Relaxing While Pushing Forward

Welcome to our monthly column, where we provide success tips in a quick story form. In this column, we will share stories of individuals who have achieved their goals by implementing effective success skills.

These stories are not just for entertainment but to inspire and guide you on your journey to success in both personal and professional spheres. Finding Balance: Relaxing While Pushing Forward

Once upon a time, there were two friends named Mia and Tom. Mia was really good at playing the piano, and Tom was excellent at painting. They both worked hard to get better at what they loved to do. But after a while, they felt tired and needed a break.

For a few weeks, Mia and Tom just relaxed. They slept more, watched movies, and spent time in the park. It felt good, but they noticed they weren't practicing piano or painting.

One day, they met an older artist named Mr. Lee, who was very successful. He emphasized the importance of learning from successful individuals like him. He said the secret is to find a balance between resting and working.

Mia and Tom decided to try Mr. Lee's advice. They made a plan to practice the piano and painting for some time every day, taking breaks to relax. This way, they felt better and got better at what they loved to do.

Remember, finding the right balance between relaxation and effort is not just a suggestion; it's a key to empowerment. Recharge, but always keep an eye on your goals. With the right balance, you can achieve anything you set your mind to and feel empowered by your ability to manage your time effectively.

CASE AGAINST TRUMP

continued from page 4

To fulfill Jesus’ mandate to minister to “the least of these,” he is leading a revival of the Poor People’s Campaign, which the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. founded in the late 1960s and Bishop Barber restarted in 2018: a national multiracial coalition of Americans working to address the challenges of those struggling to make ends meet.

Historically, poorer Americans have had much lower voting rates than other groups.

The Poor People’s Campaign is mobilizing an estimated 15 million voters to cast ballots for candidates who address issues they care about, which has less to do with who uses what bathroom and more to do with a living wage and universal health care.

“Poor people are the new swing voters,” Bishop Barber said. “And every real evangelical knows that the first issue that Jesus talked about was poverty."

Why Cruisin’ For A Cure Matters

From Prostate Cancer Survivor to Advocate

Part 2 Conclusion

Richard and Jim have become best friends in the past 13 years, sharing their survivorship and their commitment to helping men take care of their health while “getting over any hangups they might have” about prostate exams.

“It literally saves lives,” Jim says. “Men are dying needlessly for want of a simple test and the discomfort of a finger. We should be testing men annually and men have to be their own advocates.”

Richard is expecting some 200 men to be screened by Roswell Park experts at the September 28 Cruisin' for a Cure Buffalo-Niagara event.(Cars and motorcycles can be registered on the day of the event or by using the flyer found on the MANUP Buffalo Inc.’s website.)

“We are really trying to hammer the community with a need to shift their way of thinking, and for men to think beyond themselves as to a reason why a check-up is important,” he says. The main draw for the Cruisin’ for a Cure BuffaloNiagara event is the car show, featuring owners and clubs from across Western New York and Southern Ontario showing off their classic cars, motorcycles and custom-built vehicles, in addition to food trucks, vendors and entertainment.

Prostate cancer early detection tests are recommended for men between the ages of 45 and 69 for men of average risk of developing cancer; men with a family history of the disease should talk to their doctors about getting tested earlier.

Richard also stresses that prostate cancer can be more aggressive in men with African and Hispanic backgrounds, who are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of the disease and therefore have fewer treatment options.

“Please, as we say, ‘MANUP, see your doctor and get checked,’” he adds.

BLACK HISTORY

continued from page 3

The pobladores founded the city “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora La Reina de los Ángeles sobre el Río Porciúncula” (Spanish for The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels on the Porciuncula River) that day, after some priests found the area 10 years prior. Another historian, Dr. Antonio Rios-Bustamante, states that Los Angeles’ original settlers were even more mixed than the census stated, but was that African, Indian and European ancestry was a hallmark.

In Los Angeles, the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park honored the pobladores in the 1950s with a plaque, but it was mysteriously removed. It was suggested that the removal of the plaque was racially motivated. However, in 1981 the plaque was replaced.

-The Origin of Funk Fest-

On Sunday, August 14, an estimated 6,000 people passed through St. John Baptist Church on Goodell Street to pay their last respects to Rick James who transitioned August 6, 2004. All day long, throughout the community, Rick’s music blared from cars and some people even danced in the streets.

Following the funeral service, a tremendous outpouring

Marnetta Malcolm was involved with that very first tribute, which she says was organized by Terry Davis, Brian Davis, David White, Wade Hawkins and Joyce Wilson Nixon.

“We came to praise the brother not to bury him,” Rev. James A. Lewis said from the massive stage in the park that day 20 years ago. “Let the funk live on!”

And so it did.

The celebration continued the following year in 2005 when Marnetta, WilsonNixon and Wade Hawkins produced and introduced Funk Fest in MLK Park.

In 2007 the festival was moved to LaSalle Park on the water. It was one of the longest running and largest events in the park where thousands of people attended each year.

The event took place there until 2019, and moved to MLK Park after the pandemic as construction was set to begin on transforming LaSalle Park into Ralph Wilson Park.

Marnetta was a member of the Imagine LaSalle focus group that led the community-driven planning and design of Ralph Wilson Park and is currently the Vice Chair of the Ralph Wilson Park Conservancy’s Board of Directors.

She is credited for pushing for and ensuring that the amphitheater stays in the new park.

“The fact that the amphitheater is staying is a testament to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, to the city, and to the community for listening and hearing us! We need our stage,” said Marnetta.

When the beautiful new Ralph Wilson Park opens, Marnetta says Funk Fest will return there around 2025 or 2026. But she is absolutely not abandoning her community.

Funk Fest weekend (always in August) will start with Friday Night Live on Jefferson Avenue, move to Ralph Wilson Park on Saturday, and end on Sunday in MLK Park. -A.B.

William Y. Cooper: Beyond Imagination on View at Burchfield Penney

William Y. Cooper’s legacy as a painter, printmaker, muralist, and educator has left an indelible mark on Buffalo’s art community. His compositions are distinguishable for their bustling rhythm and for Cooper’s luminous use of color and line to compose a melody of stories and moods. A selfproclaimed Afrocentric artist, he fuses his African heritage with his American experience. Beyond Imagination celebrates the breadth of Cooper’s work and the embodiment of his art as the “noblest expression of the human experience.”

Considering the vibrant and intricate nature of his paintings, it’s hard to believe that Cooper was once afraid of color. He recalled during a 2013 Burchfield Penney Living Legacy interview that he feared layering more than one or two colors in a single piece. Earlier works like Portrait of Sharon Holley show such restraint in both color and subject matter, which were primarily portraits and realistic figurative studies. He incorporates West African Adinkra symbols, representing different African proverbs, throughout several paintings. Repetitions of colorful patterns illustrate figures with elongated features and faces reminiscent of masks, highlighting the influence of African aesthetics. Leaning into geometric abstraction and cubism, Cooper embraced a similar aesthetic. His later works transcended from visualizing the literal to the metaphorical. Naming Ceremony, Ghana portrays his transformative experience visiting Ghana and receiving his African name in a special ceremony. A slew of blues, red, yellow, and green creates an otherworldly scene that requires an extended look to see the narrative embedded within.

Heavily inspired by music, Cooper rarely painted without it. The fragmented and interpolated rhythms of jazz echo in how he deconstructs conventional narrative to convey a complexity of feeling. Layers of colors, faces, stories, and forms nod to the symbolic nature of his paintings, which challenge viewers to slowly observe the many details of each piece. Creative and curious by nature, Cooper embraced ambiguity. He wanted viewers to connect with his paintings to develop their own interpretations, pushing the bounds of their imagination in the process.

A beloved muralist, Buffalo Arts Studio artist, and educator, he brought the concepts of his practice to the public in numerous murals throughout Buffalo. His studio was a popular community space where he inspired generations of artists, fostering conversation around the interconnections between art and life. Cooper’s desire to find answers to questions big and small sparked a curiosity that freed his creativity and carried into his paintings. This spirit lives on in his work, inspiring us to discover connections between our past and present that unlock the power of our imaginations in the process.

Do New York’s People of African Descent Deserve Reparations? Part 11 - The Continuation of An On-Going Series By Soldier For Buffalo

Victims Of Gentrification Without Renumeration

For two years, residents protested and filed lawsuits to halt the sale of their land. However, in mid-1856, Mayor Fernando Wood prevailed, and residents of Seneca Village were given final notices. In 1857, the city government acquired all private property within Seneca Village through eminent domain, and on October 1, city officials in New York reported that the last holdouts living on land that was to become Central Park had been removed. All of the inhabitants of the village were evicted by 1857, and all of the properties within the future Central Park were razed. The only institution from Seneca Village to survive was All Angels' Church, which relocated a couple of blocks away, albeit with an entirely new congregation. There are few records of where residents went after their eviction, as the community was entirely destroyed. In the 20th century, no one had been identified as a descendant of a Seneca Village resident yet during the eminent domain removal of the residents a newspaper account suggested that Seneca Village would "not be forgotten!"

The settlement was largely forgotten for more than a century after its demolition. Seneca Village became the subject of a 1997 New-York Historical Society exhibition and as a classic example, the historical Seneca Village has been cited in the context of racialized community displacement and more recent urban renewal initiatives.

The Seneca Village Project was formed in 1998 as a collaboration between Cynthia Copeland of New York, Nan Rothschild of Barnard College, and Diana Wall of City College of New York, and was later organized under the non-profit Institute for the Exploration of Seneca Village History. It is dedicated to raising awareness about Seneca Village's significance as a free, middle-class Black community in 19th-century New York City. The project facilitates educational programs, that engage school children, teachers, and the general public, and bring Seneca Village into public knowledge.

In February 2001, a plaque commemorating the site where Seneca Village once stood was erected. Native New Yorker Horowitz, Seneca Village was the gift but like Bruce’s Beach and Greenwood and so many other sites seized by eminent domain, or worse our ancestors are victims of gentrification without renumeration. People of African Descent of New York you must add the “land back” of Central Park to your requests for reparations. The alleged current low-end value of Central Park is approximately $35 billion. Honor your ancestors and make this request one of your top five requests.

A household would need at least an annual income of $591,550 to be able to join the 1% and those living on the Upper Westside with annual average household incomes of $250,500 are almost at 50% of the 1%. People of African Descent of New York, what is your annual average household income? Remember Seneca Village was a community of free African Americans and now it is less than 10%.

Our mantra is that we want what they got and more! Remember, the check has been bouncing for far too long and you have an opportunity to do more than commemorate symbolism for the repair of centuries of harm. When you know better you must do better and to do better is to ask for true repair measures outside of your governor’s budget. New York, you are pregnant with possibilities and opportunities for reparatory justice.

“...You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this case, it comes from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old formulas, and the courage to invent the future. It took the madmen of yesterday for us to be able to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of those madmen. We must dare to invent the future.”

New York Child Care Action Team Hosts Emergency Conference

Office Of Children And Family Services Deputy Commissioner Explains Changes to NYS Child Care Industry

Western New York Child Care Action Team, Incorporated (WNY CCAT), a coalition of child care professionals, advocates, and parents, hosted an emergency video conference on Zoom recently, where the Deputy Commissioner of the New York State’s Office of Children and Family Services, Ms. Nora Yates, explained new rules and technological developments in the child care industry to more than 100 leaders in New York’s child care community.

Ms. Yates discussed four major changes to the way child care professionals interface with the Office of Children and Family Services and to the process by which parents seeking child care can access affordable child care services. First, Ms. Yates reported that New York State had invested $1.8 Billion since 2019 in order to stabilize a child care industry still sluggish from a pandemic-related economic downturn. This state investment included grants which were designed to help child care business owners expand services and improve professional staff pay, as well as grants to incentivize private corporations, wherever they plant new facilities, to develop the child care industry around the new business to meet the child care needs of their workers.

Second, the department revised the eligibility requirements for the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Officials once determined eligibility for Child Care Assistance by utilizing New York State’s poverty rate. Beginning in 2024, the Office of Children and Family Services is now using NYS median income, including New York City wages. As a result, households with greater incomes qualify for the state subsidy. For example, a household of four qualifies for Child care Assistance even if they earn over $108K. While this may expand the number of households which qualify , Ms. Yates believed this change will also bring more economic relief to households already in program who struggle to afford child care even with the state subsidy.

Third, NYS households seeking the state subsidy for child care services may now apply online. The application has been streamlined, as questions deemed unnecessary to the eligibility process have been eliminated. Furthermore, to ensure equitable language access , the guidelines and application for the Child Care Assistance Program have been translated into Spanish. It’s expected these changes to applying will make it more efficient, and easily completed on a household’s home computer or applicants’ smartphones.

Finally, New York State providers (outside of New York City) will now receive direct deposit payments from the state.

The Western New York Child Care Action Team convened the video conference and Vonetta T. Rhodes, co-founder and Leadership Representative, served as host. The Action Team advocates for affordable child care for parents, equitable pay for child care professionals, and high quality early childhood education for children. Their mission is “to educate, investigate, plan, strategize, advocate and provide swift actions that lead to productive, long term, results and solutions that positively impact the child care community across all modalities.”

A White Supremacist Mindset At Core of Racist Riots In Britain

The United Kingdom has recently experienced a wave of rioting and blame is placed upon people referred to as “the far right.” The individuals who fought police, looted, burned mosques, and physically attacked African descended people, are of the right wing politically, but they should be called racists. It is racism that has been accepted and amplified by the British political class and the media. It is racism that has created feelings of grievance among so many white people there. Britain’s politics have long been motivated by white supremacist thinking, and today’s rioters should not be let off the hook with a euphemism that doesn’t fully explain their actions.

It is literally true that the sun never set on the British empire. Sixty-five different countries celebrate days of independence from that hegemon, from Jamaica to India to Malaysia to Ghana, millions of people lived under British imperial subjugation. Their freedom was hard won, such as in Kenya where thousands of people were incarcerated in prison camps or killed during the independence struggle in the 1950s. The crimes of torture and murder were covered up when records regarding Kenya, Guyana, and other countries were moved or destroyed.

Britain’s history of invading most of the world must be remembered whenever its white population complains about immigration, as they are doing right now, committing mob attacks on Black and brown people, and violence against asylum seekers.

After riding high for several centuries, the United Kingdom is a shell of its former self, no longer a financial or military power. It has nuclear weapons given to it by the U.S., and a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, also given by the U.S. This vassal state now offers assistance in invading Iraq, destroying Libya, or acting as the propaganda and black ops headquarters during the war against Syria. Most recently the UK’s then prime minister Boris Johnson played a leading role in scuttling the peace talks that could have ended the Ukraine proxy war shortly after it began in 2022. The state exists as a foot soldier of the U.S. And, like the U.S., it is controlled by a predatory ruling capitalist class.

The has-been empire has shriveled up to a de-industrialized state with years of austerity policies causing people to be so food insecure that their children are shorter than those in other countries. Of course white supremacy can always be offered up as a palliative, which is why the killing of three children by the teenaged son of Rwandan immigrants stirred so much ire and racial hatred. The killings were immediately and falsely blamed on a misnamed man who was actually in police custody in Ireland. The killer was said to be a recently arrived asylum seeker, which was patently false. The misreported news should not have been surprising. Just as in the U.S., white Britons are obsessed with the arrival of people from the global south. It is ironic that the accused killer is of Rwandan ancestry. Boris Johnson concocted a plot to send asylum seekers to Rwanda but court challenges killed the scheme and the Rwandan government announced that it would keep the $310 million they already received saying, "Let this be clear, paying back the money was never part of the agreement." That remark is just desserts for a country whose leadership has nothing to offer except war and poverty and whose fanciful scheme resulted in being scammed by an autocratic government that no asylum seeker would choose as a home.

While white Britain frets about people of color arriving at their doors, some 242,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the United Kingdom since 2022, a huge number to receive from one nation in a short period of time. No one suggested sending them to Rwanda or threatened their lives for the simple reason that they are white. The lack of anger directed at Ukrainians is proof that the anti-immigrant mania is racist in nature. A country that is no longer white refuses to let go of its past, which allowed white Britons to travel far and wide to exploit millions of other people who are then vilified if they choose to immigrate.

In addition, the U.S., UK and their NATO allies created waves of displacement with imperialist policies. In all, more than 38 million people in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia were displaced by the so-called wars on terror. The policies that force people out of their homes are rarely examined and racial animus flourishes as a result of the lies and hypocrisy

There should be no war except class war. The people taking to the streets should turn their anger onto the rich who control British politics. But even the allegedly leftist Labour party which is again in power engages in weasel words instead of working on behalf of the people. Then again new prime minister Keir Starmer was acceptable to the rulers because he purged the left from his party. Having curried favor with the people at the top who are responsible for poverty and austerity, he will not now name the beast that he helped to create.

The peoples of the global south who now reside in the UK now realize that they are still unsafe. They left developing nations to go to an allegedly advanced country that has been destroyed by its leadership with greed and lies and blatant racism. They must determine how best to protect themselves, and the rest of the world should call the rioters what they are, a white supremacist mob. Justice for Geraldine Pointer & Martin Sostre!

A new effort is underway to vacate the convictions of Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer and Martin Sostre, framed by Buffalo Police back in 1967.

On Thursday August 15th, at 6 p.m., community members will gather at Frank E Merriweather Jr. Library, located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue, to announce the application to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office Conviction Integrity unit to review and vacate the convictions of Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer and Martin Sostre, stemming from falsified and uncorroborated arrests almost fifty-seven years earlier, on July 15th, 1967. Attendees will call upon Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane (D) to exonerate Pointer and Sostre.

Their arrests came three weeks following Buffalo’s rebellion of June 27 - July 1, where Black Buffalonians revolted against police brutality, segregated housing, and racialized inequality.

Since opening in 1965, Sostre’s Afro Asian Book Shop at 1412 Jefferson Avenue served as an empowering and liberating space for Black Buffalonians, and a refuge for those seeking safety from police brutality throughout the rebellion. Pointer managed another revolutionary bookstore at 289 High Street. Due to the bookstores' growing prominence and contributions to the radical Black political consciousness in Buffalo, Sostre and Pointer were targeted by local law enforcement.

Sostre was charged with illegal sale and possession of narcotics, inciting a riot, arson, resisting arrest, and assault. Pointer, who was working with him at the Afro Asian Book Shop, was charged with selling narcotics and interfering with an arrest. Authorities accused Sostre of conducting $15,000 in weekly drug sales and using his basement to manufacture and distribute Molotov cocktails. Narcotics Assistant Chief of Detectives Michael Amico claimed to have motion picture evidence of drug sales and portrayed Sostre as a violent drug trafficker distributing “bombs to hoodlums.” By the time of his trial the following year, the arson and riot charges were dropped, the motion picture footage could not be found, and the drug charges were reduced to a single $15 bag of heroin supplied by a police informant who later recanted his testimony. Sostre was sentenced to 31-41 years by an all-white jury, and Pointer to 7-15 years. She lost custody of her five children before being reunited with them after two and half years of imprisonment. Following nine years of incarceration, Sostre was granted executive clemency on December 24, 1975 and released on February 9, 1976.

Geraldine Pointer will be in attendance to highlight her contributions as well as those of other Black women involved in Buffalo’s Black Power movement. Featured will be the 1974 documentary Frame-up! The Imprisonment of Martin Sostre which details the broader historical context of Buffalo’s uprising, Sostre’s and Pointer’s imprisonment, and Sostre’s fight for bodily autonomy and dignity while incarcerated in the New York prison system.

Bills Routed in Preseason Opener Against Bears in 33-6 Loss

The Bills greeted their fans with an uninspired performance against a young up and coming Chicago Bears team last week.

Former Buffalo Bills Defensive Coordinator Eric Washington (Bears DC) unit dominated the line of scrimmage and did not allow the Bills running or passing game to get any rhythm. The Bills could only muster 77 rushing and 123 passing yards respectively.

LEGAL NOTICE

The Chicago Bears, fresh off their Hall of Fame football game a week ago, clearly came to play. One glaring area of concern with the Bills team is the back up quarterback position - where neither Mitchell Trubisky or Shane Buechele belong in the NFL. Yes, it’s that bad! Trubisky continues to throw the football behind wide open receivers in practice and now in live games. Trubisky was drafted 4th overall by the Chicago Bears and never really adjusted to the speed of the game. He was God awful last year playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and his only claim to fame is that he looks like an NFL style QB. The game is way too fast for Trubisky and the best job for him is to hold a clip board on the sideline and think about becoming an insurance salesman.

Shane Buechele should not even hold a clipboard on the sidelines. He should be cut and Bills General Manager Brandon Beane must scour the waiver wire for a competent backup QB. Beane should have signed Tyrod Taylor when he had the opportunity during free agency back in February. Even through Ed Oliver was shaken up on first play of the Chicago Bears game his presence will be critical for a successful 2024 season. Oliver and Da Quan Jones will be the anchors of the defensive unit. Buffalo Bills rookie defensive tackle Dewayne Carter will make his presence known along with Austin Johnson and DeShawn Williams as part of the regular rotation. Bills linebackers led by veteran Matt Milano, and second year players Terrel Bernard, Dorian Williams along with veteran newcomer Deion Jones will be challenged to perform at a high level.

I don’t see Matt Milano starting the season, instead possibly playing sometime into the second half of the season due to his serious knee and leg injury from last season in the game played in London.

The former Atlanta Falcon Super Bowl starting linebacker Deion Jones is coming off numerous shoulder injuries, and if he can stay on the field could contribute along with Nicholas Morrow. I hope often injured Baylon Spector can last at least four games . He could be cut due to his injury prone career. The Edge rushers starters AJ Epenesa and Greg Rousseau will be joined by veterans Von Miller, Dawuane Smoot, and Casey Toohill. “My Diamond in the Rough” on defensive unit is Edge rusher rookie Javon Solomon. Pay close attention to his speed and physical toughness that number 56 will bring to this unit. The defensive back starters at corner Kaiir Elam and Rasul Douglas with Taron Johnson (our gadget man), Christian Benford, Ja’Marcus Ingram rounding out the core guys.

The Bills safety position will be a work in progress due to injuries to Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop. The starters right now are Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin. I see recent veteran additions Terrell Burgess and Kareem Jackson becoming impact players on this unit. Burgess has already made plays in practice and almost had a three-interception day back on August 8th. The two inceptions showed his awareness and savvy ball hawking skills. “I’m not to vocal but lead by example and do whatever I can learn the playbook and a really nice system to play within,” Burgess said.

There are two types of players that Coaches hate - one that does everything you tell him to do and those that don’t anything you tell them. It’s his 5th year in the NFL and Burgess could become a key contributor on the back end.

Buffalo Bills new Defensive secondary Coach Jahmile Addae has brought a new attitude and Kaiir Elam already seems to be flourishing in it. Elam and Douglas are now bumping the opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage which makes Elam’s athletic ability that much more effective on the football field.

I’m looking for Bills secondary to be much more aggressive on the corners since Poyer and Hyde are no longer playing the Safety positions. Please remember to be a GOOD sport. Follow George Radney on Realdealsportsshow.com .

PINE GRILL 2024: ANOTHER GLORIOUS REUNION!
converged on MLK Park the last two Sundays for the "Mother of all Reunions" - The African American Cultural Center's Pine Grill Jazz Reunion. This past Sunday featured national recording artist and renowned smooth jazz saxophonist Najee. Buffalo's own Daniel Powell, Najee's drummer, brought the house down with an awesome drum solo. Daniel's proud mother, Mrs. Olivia Brown and equally proud cousin, were on hand to cheer him on. They're pictured in the top left corner of the photo display and he's right under them! Thanks Cultural Center for another great event!
