Sensational Inclusion: A Culturally Rich Learning Center For Children With Neurological Challenges
Dr. Tyana Velazquez-Smith has a unique understanding of the needs of her neurodiverse students.
Having been diagnosed with autism as an adult, she now uses her perspective to create inclusive and sensoryfriendly educational environments through Sensational Inclusion, a learning center and educational program she created in February this year. Sensational Inclusion offers a unique approach to education especially those with neurological challenges such as Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and others. Already, the center has worked with major organizations and schools, providing workshops and on a smaller scale, Sensational Inclusion provides learning circles, enriching activities and diverse learning and reading materials through their flagship offer: a comprehensive 10-week literacy program specifically designed for children from Pre-K to 3rd grade.
The program leverages each child’s special interests and techniques to enhance their learning experiences and nurture the unique genius of every student. This is part of the organization’s bigger mission to advance disability justice by fostering neurodiverse-affirming educational environments.
“At Sensational Inclusion, we believe that every child deserves to have their unique strengths recognized and nurtured,” explained Velazquez-Smith. “By leveraging their individual interests and strengths, and providing tailored learning techniques and support, we create learning environments where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential. “Our 10-session approach is carefully planned to ensure that we meet the specific needs of your child. Our priority is to ensure that every student feels seen, understood, and, most importantly, excited about their literacy learning journey.”
Enrollment is open on a rolling basis at Sensational Inclusion’s website and enrollees will enjoy a 10 percent discount when booking before September. To enroll or for more information go to sensatioinalinclusion.com

No Menthol Buffalo Coalition Launches Media Campaign to End the Sale of Menthol Tobacco
On Monday the No Menthol Buffalo Coalition launched their “No More Delays” media campaign to end the sale of menthol-flavored tobacco in Buffalo.
The campaign will feature youth on billboards in English and Spanish throughout the east and west sides of the city, including bus shelter posters. Its goals are to prevent youth from becoming replacement smokers, address health disparities, save lives from the scourge of menthol tobacco use, and demonstrate to the Buffalo Common Council that there is strong community support for this legislation. The campaign also seeks to encourage the Council to act on the issue when they reconvene in September.
“Annually, over 10,000 youth in New York State become new daily smokers, and an estimated 280,000 New York youth currently alive will die prematurely from smoking,” said Stan Martin, Founder and CEO of Stan Martin Consulting, LLC. “Research shows that most of the youth who start smoking begin with menthol-flavored tobacco. Menthol cools and numbs the throat, masking the harshness of smoking and leading to addiction, which makes it harder for both youth and adults to quit.”
This event follows the reluctance of the City Attorney’s Office and the Buffalo Common Council to enact a ban on the sale of menthol tobacco in Buffalo. Such a reluctance, a press release from the coalition states, shows their failure to “prioritize the health of their constituents over the profits of the tobacco industry, out of fear of facing litigation—a fear that should not deter morally right actions.”
“The No Menthol Buffalo Coalition's proposed legislation is clear,” the release continues. “The responsibility lies with manufacturers and retailers, not with individual consumers. Further delays only cost lives, particularly among people of color, and result in more youth becoming daily smokers and addicted to tobacco—an issue that is entirely preventable.”
However council members say they do not have the authority to enact such a ban . Councilmember David Rivera told the News that either the

Returning From the War, Returning to Racism
After fighting for this country in World War 2, Black soldiers faced violence and segregation at home.
Sgt. Isaac Woodard Jr. suffered a horrific act of racial violent assault, so vicious that it became one of the early chords of the civil rights movement, and is credited with inspiring President Harry Truman to integrate the military in 1948.
Sgt. Woodard, 26, was a decorated African-American veteran. He had just been honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1946 and was headed home to Winnsboro, S.C. to see his wife. Still in uniform, Mr. Woodard, was forcibly removed from the bus, brutally beaten and jailed, his eyes gouged out ,leaving him blind by the White police chief in the town of Batesburg.
But in the small town where Mr. Woodard was beaten so severely that he lost his sight, the crime went unpunished and largely faded from memory. Almost three generations after the atrocity, a Black Army veteran in Georgia and a White federal judge in South Carolina separately stumbled upon Mr. Woodard’s story and vowed to honor his memory. Seventy-three years later, in 2019, the town Batesburg-Leesville — unveiled a historic marker downtown as a permanent reminder of the racial injustice that happened there.

Black Christian Leaders Find Hope With Kamala Harris
Black clergy across the country report a new enthusiasm in an election year that was previously leaving voters feeling discouraged and depressed. African Americans have overwhelmingly supported Democratic candidates since the party threw its weight behind civil rights legislation in the 1960s. But having Harris at the top of the ticket has brought a new energy, reminding some of Barack Obama’s historic first campaign. According to a recent YouGov poll, nearly 40 percent of Black people say they are enthusiastic about voting this November. Seventy-four percent say they plan to vote for Harris come November. A month ago, Black support for Biden’s reelection was only 69 percent.
"The reason you’re seeing the organic response from the Black faith community is because she belongs,” Matthew L. Watley, senior pastor at Kingdom Fellowship African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Maryland, said. “She’s one of us, and it’s been demonstrated for a long time.”
Harris is not without Black Christian critics, though. Some ministers are skeptical of where she would lead the country, if she makes it to the White House. According to one Milwaukee pastor, the Democrats have “championed some policies that are unbiblical to family, that are unbiblical as it relates to sexuality, and I think it’s cost the African American community,”
He said his congregation was split. -Christianity Today
The Original Taking It To The Streets Returns August 17 & 18!
Takin’
It
To The Streets started over three decades ago after founder and president Anita O. Williams, while sitting in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, thought to herself, “My neighborhood needs help. It needs something positive.”
Indeed, more than half of the households in the area consisted of single moms raising kids. So Anita, an RN by trade, decided to specifically focus on helping them out with a community rally in the park. She sought out donations of school supplies, kids’ clothing, and non-perishable food. In addition, she brought in pony rides, bounce houses, and organized games for the kids, along with health screenings and a job fair for the adults in an effort to bring joy, inspiration, and hope to Buffalo’s East Side.
“The message we’re ‘taking to the streets,’ is that God cares about us totally from the crown of our head to the souls of our feet,” said Anita. “ He’s concerned about every area of our being, that’s why we do the fun things, the health component, free clothing, etc. Over the years we have kept the faith and God has blessed us.”
-36th Year-
" We humbly, thankfully and gratefully announce that the Lord has allowed the Original Taking it to the Streets to celebrate its 36th year next Saturday and Sunday August 17 and 18, in the entire Martin Luther King Park from 11a.m. until the park's closing both days.," said Anita who also coordinates the event.
Bringing a wide variety of music, and activities, she said this year’s event will be host to a brand new company and movement known as the “Celestial Move of Love,” which includes Ashley Gary, Kenyada Davis, Inner City Bedlam Band, Marchon Hamilton ll, and Next Level.

Three Healing Juice Drinks
Freshly made juice is packed with nutrients and vitamins and can help you self-heal naturally.
From preventing high blood pressure to helping you hear, juicing is an amazing way to bring nutrition and health to your life for many long years
Here are three healing juice drinks to consider trying.
1. Celery Juice to Lower High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is often the root cause of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. A time-tested Chinese remedy for this condition is celery juice, which can be made with a blender or a juicer. Two to three 8 oz glasses a day for a month can help prevent high blood pressure or restore it to normal. Additionally, celery is known to prevent gout and other arthritic conditions. Studies have found that this stalk is packed with over a dozen anti-inflammatory agents, including apigenin, a cox2-inhibiting compound similar to some anti-inflammatory drugs. Get the benefits without the side effects!
2. A Juicy Hearing Aid
An ancient remedy for improving hearing is made from garlic and onions, carrots, and parsley. Put 2 oz of water in a blender with 1 medium-sized chopped onion, 2 chopped carrots, and a generous bunch of parsley. Take out the pulp and keep the juice. Press the raw garlic to get garlic oil, and add to the juice. The garlic will help to increase blood flow to the auditory nerve, and the carrots and parsley are rich in vitamin and C, and niacin, which naturally help improve your hearing function. Drink this juice on a daily basis for a month. If you prefer a more liquid juice, feel free to water this mixture down or add it to other juices.
3. Heartburn Helper
Juice one medium raw potato in a juicer or a blender, put through a strainer and mix the juice with a cup of warm water. Drink this on an empty stomach in the morning when you first wake up. It will coat and sooth your stomach, as well as reduce acid. -Dr. Mao
From Prostate Cancer Survivor to Advocate: Why Cruisin’ For A Cure Matters to Jim
Part I
There’s power in being your own advocate and there’s power in becoming an advocate for others after your own unlikely diagnosis with cancer.
One morning, more than 25 years ago, Jim Dorsey was riding a stationary bicycle while on a consulting job in Washington, DC from his home in Ontario. He noticed that he felt some pain while sitting down. When he woke up and saw blood the next morning, he called his doctor.
It took six months to make an appointment and get a diagnosis, but in October 1999, Jim learned he had an advanced, aggressive form of prostate cancer and was treated by a team of doctors in Toronto.
“I never thought about prostate cancer but I knew what it was instantly,” Jim says. “I lucked out all the way through. I responded perfectly to treatment and radiation went so smoothly, no hitches at all. Five years later, I was declared cancer-free.”
From the moment that the diagnosis was delivered, Jim and his late wife, Sandi, decided to dedicate their time to educating men about prostate cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. They advocated for early detection through the two-step process that involves both a blood test to look for elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen, a protein, and a digital rectal exam.
Jim now runs a support group for men in Brampton, Ontario, but initially felt their efforts were not helpful or that men weren’t responsive to their outreach. “We’d get spaces in shopping centers to provide free PSA tests and no one would show up. I was buying lapel pins and wristbands from a fellow in San Antonio and telling him about our problems and he told me about a woman named Debbie Baker who ran an event called Cruisin’ for a Cure in Costa Mesa, California.”
After visiting Debbie’s event in 2006, Jim returned home to Brampton and organized the first Cruisin’ for a Cure Canada in September 2007. A few years later, when he learned about a far more local organization, MANUP Buffalo-Niagara, that shared his goals of promoting prostate cancer awareness and early detection, he became an early member of the group. Jim and Sandi helped MANUP Buffalo Inc. organize its first Cruisin for a Cure Buffalo-Niagara at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in September 2011.
A shared goal of saving men’s lives
“Jim’s been with us since the beginning,” says Richard Satterwhite, co-founder of MANUP Buffalo Inc. and Patient Engagement Specialist at Roswell Park.
He’s also a 15-year prostate cancer survivor and advocate for education and early detection. The two organizations in neighboring countries now often work together for the same goals.
The same shared efforts will be at the forefront again this year for the 13th annual Cruisin’ for a Cure BuffaloNiagara event on the Roswell Park campus, taking place on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a prostate cancer education and early detection event on the same day from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Pre-registration for exams can be found at https://www.roswellpark.org/cruisinforacure, but men can also register for exams the day of the event.

Charles Ray “Chip” Banks: “God’s Dude”
Funeral services were held for Charles Ray "Chip" Banks on August 2, 2024 at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Chip was born in Henderson, Texas on December 23, 1947 and passed away in Chattanooga, on July 21, 2024. The son of the late Billie and Eula (Hyder) Banks, he moved with his family from Texas to Buffalo, New York at a young age where he attended P.S. 79 and Burgard High School. Chip enjoyed a memorable childhood growing up in the Jasper Parish Housing Projects (Black Rock) where he fostered life long bonds and friendships. After graduating from high school, he enlisted into the United States Navy where he was assigned to the Navy Arts and Communications Branch. In addition to his high priority communications responsibilities, he was the lead singer in the Navy Band that performed at special events and aboard ships stationed in Newport News Rhode Island. Chip was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1970. After his military service, he moved to Teaneck NJ where he briefly pursued a singing career and signed a recording contract with the Isley Brothers label T-Neck Records.
Eventually he found his way back home to Buffalo and attended Buffalo State University for 4-years and was a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts. Chip was also a playwright and actor.
In 1979, he met his wife to be, Wanda Timmons. They were married the following year on August 2, 1980. Ironically, the day he was funeralized, would’ve been Chip and Wanda’s 44th wedding anniversary.
Chip and Wanda eventually moved to Atlanta, Georgia, started a family, and resided there for almost four decades. His career path included General Motors, General Mills, and Federal Express where he retired but returned to work at Fed-Ex as an Independent-Contractor until March 2024.
He and his wife Wanda were recently preparing to relocate to Buffalo. Unfortunately, upon completing cancer treatments in April, Chip experienced several health setbacks that culminated into a fight for his life.
Chip committed his life to the Lord and eventually became an Ordained Minister in 1981 by The Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God. Chip wholeheartedly believed in GOD's promise of salvation and eternal life.
A devoted and exemplary father and husband, Chip is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Wanda, daughter Celeste Hope, son Marcus Charles (LeNay), his precious, dearest granddaughter Phoenix ("Feebie") Parker, “twin” sister Alnisa (Barbara), sisters Yvonne, Billie (Kim), brothers Bryant and John (Lisa); a beloved, cherished aunt and uncle, Raymond and Sarah Thompson of Buffalo and uncle Robert Thompson of California; In-Laws Leona Adams, Mamie Green, Pauline Ford, Patricia Timmons, Charles Timmons, Ben Timmons and Anthony Timmons all of Chattanooga; his entire Black Rock Family, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his sister Sharon.
During this most difficult time, we are comforted and rejoice in Chip’s inheritance of a problem free living reserved for him in Heaven. Knowing that our Chip was, as his favorite sister Billie affectionately called him, “God’s Dude,” we believe that the Lord has taken our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, home.
Interment was at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Bills Competing In A Very Physical Training Camp at St. John Fisher University
There is a very optimistic atmosphere at Buffalo Bills 2024 training Camp.
Bills young receivers like Tyrell Shavers and number one draft pick Keon Coleman will give veteran receivers Chase Claypool and Marques Valdes - Scantling a serious push for roster spots. My observation has Tyrell Shavers, Curtis Samuels, Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Mack Hollins, and Justin Shorter are Bills top receivers during this time.
Josh Allen seems more relaxed in the pocket and is throwing the ball to the open receiver. Everyone is eating so far in this Bills offensive scheme. Bills Tight ends Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox, and Quinton Morris all have made impressive receptions in training camp.
“We are emphasizing being really unselfish everybody can eat, it’s never been about one guy. No selfish guys. It’s our goal to win a championship taking it one day at a time”, said Quinton Morris . “If they ask me to chip block or go out and make a reception, that’s what I’m going to do.”
The offense is a work in progress and one critical position is at center with Connor McGovern moving over to that position from playing Guard. Connor so far is having a tough time with snaps bouncing back to Allen in the shotgun, and not clean snaps when Allen is under Center. It’s early in training camp and McGovern and Allen must get it together by time of the week one game against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Bills drafted a Center/’Guard in Sedrick Van Pran – Granger. Granger played 4 years for University of Georgia winning the NCAA Championship last year and is the Bills future at that position. We must keep an eye on this critical offensive position. Bills running back spots are becoming wide open after injury to often injured Ty Johnson. James Cook is the main man in the back field, but Darrynton Evans, rookie Ray Davis, and Frank Gore Jr. Our full back is locked in with Reggie Gilliam. I give Evans, Davis, and Gore, making the final roster spots with Ty Johnson going on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP), meaning he won’t be able to get on the active roster until six weeks into the season.
The Bills have serious concerns at the Safety position due to injuries too often. Mike Edwards is dealing with a hamstring and rookie Cole Bishop is suffering with a shoulder injury. The current starting Safeties are Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin. Damar has been very impressive at the starting position and seems to be turning the corner from his medical scare two years ago.
The Bills picked up two veteran safeties in Kareem Jackson, and Terrell Burgess. I think Jackson especially can step in and make big hits and plays along with veteran leadership. Hopefully Terrell Burgess at 36 years old has something left in the tank and can contribute as well. Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott loves veteran players so these guys are right up his alley.
We will discuss the entire Defensive Unit in next week’s column. Please remember to be a GOOD Sport.

Experience The Art of Prophet Isaiah Robertson
TheNiagara Falls National Heritage Area recently acquired Prophet Isaiah Robertson's Second Coming House, located at 1308 Ontario Avenue Niagara Falls, New York.
The house was home to self-proclaimed prophet, Isaiah Robertson, whose art captivates the Niagara Falls community and visitors worldwide. After Prophet Isaiah's passing, the Kohler Foundation worked with his family to purchase the property, hiring B.R. Howard & Associates to preserve the artwork and donated the art and property to the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area to serve as the long-term stewards.
This week they will officially open the Prophet Isaiah House to the public on Saturday, August 10 from 10a.m. – 4 p.m. with a public evening reception from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Isaiah Robertson, was a carpenter from Jamaica, moved to Niagara Falls, New York, in 2004. He started renovating and reselling houses, but he soon had a change of heart. He believed that God had given him a special mission: to decorate his home and its surrounding area with biblical symbols and images. Robertson's home was a colorful and eye-catching sight, and it attracted visitors from all over the world. He welcomed visitors to his site, and he often gave spiritual guidance to those who came to him.
Robertson died in 2020, but his home still stands as a testament to his faith and his creativity. It is a reminder that even though he is gone, his message lives on. Erie County and Buffalo AKG Debut Vibrant Public Art Project at Jesse Nash Health Center
The New Mural On William Street designed by local artist Edreys Wajed Invigorates Community
Anew and much needed mural art installation has found its way to the Jesse Nash Health Center located at 608 William Street on our beloved Eastside.
From the creative hands and vision of known local artist Edreys Wajed, this mural also includes inspiration and involvement from Philadelphiabased artist Ben Volta. What's even more special is the installation was inspired and informed through community engagement. The design of the mural took into consideration the input from Nash Health Clinicians, classroom workshops with students from Harriet Ross Tubman School (BPS 31), WilliamEmslie YMCA members and local residents. With trust and support from AKG Public Art staff, Wajed created a design that reflected the diverse voices, investment and points of interest from the community, making history as the first to install a mural on an Erie County building in Buffalo .
Numerous communityoriented paint days were held at the William-Emslie Family YMCA, adjacent to the installation site, with additional
paint sessions held at Eat Off Art at the Tri-Main Center that included leadership opportunities for several young artists of color including Emeka Wajed, Bree Gilliam, and Niaja Boles. True teamwork that has made this colorful dream work for years to come.
"This is my third time working with the Buffalo AKG, and each project has been larger and more impactful than the previous," said Edreys.
tinue amplifying our voices and making our presence grand through public art. It's also important to note that as this is my largest mural to date, along with this being the AKG's first mural on an Erie County building, I was able to share the experience with
generations, it adds vibrant color to our landscape, and it calls attention to the services available to our public by the county.”
Collaborating and visiting artist on the project, Ben Volta, who hails from Philadelphia, inspired some of the elements of the mural.
Aaron Ott, AKG's Curator of Public Art, has worked with Wajed on multiple projects here in Buffalo.
"I'm honored to be entrusted with representing our community in a positive manner and it is my intention to con-
three talented, young Black artists which is great for their resume and arts practice.
" This installation is a great example of what public art can do for communities," he continued. "It connects people across organizations and
over 10 murals throughout the City of Buffalo both with private and public commissions including several with AKG that include:
Volta’s own work largely consists of outdoor public art and like Wajed, is dedicated to his city and meaningful projects that not only beautify but heal.
Wajed is no stranger to a variety of scales and materials to make masterpieces that speak volumes and raise vibrations with every colorful stroke. Outside of countless creations, he has painted
1)"The Freedom Wall" collaboration on Michigan Ave, 2) "Love Black" Downtown on Main street, 3) "John Lewis Mural" Paderewiski drive across from Buffalo Central Terminal 4) "Inner Dialogue" and the most recent collaboration for the Jesse Nash Health Center. Not to mention a lifetime of facilitating many educational experiences through his craft and Eat Off Art , a collaborative of artists, educators and entrepreneurs that he and his co-founding wife Alexa have pulled together, working to build a more empathetic community through art.
Said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, “Placing art in communities countywide enriches our lives, stimulates conversations and brings people together. We are creating a better Erie County that reflects who we are as a community, and I thank everyone who shared and contributed to this wonderful work.”

Seneca Village: Taking Black Land to Build Central Park....
This era (of enslavement) must never be viewed as a gift because the pain of our history must be America’s history and while the ocean was innocent those who traversed it did so with great disrespect. We must never forget the two million of our ancestors who jumped to their deaths or were flung to their deaths for a variety of reasons including the sick personal entertainment of watching the shark rip human beings to bits and pieces. Where are the gifts?
Seneca Village was a 19th-century settlement of mostly African American landowners in the borough of Manhattan in New York City near the current Upper West Side neighborhood where in 2022, an estimated 226,989 people lived with 10.2% identified as Asian, 6.8% identified as Black, 15.9% identified as Hispanic, and 61.7% identified as White with an average annual household income of $250,535.
Seneca Village was founded in 1825 by free Black Americans, the first such community in the city, although under Dutch rule there was a "half-free" community of African-owned farms north of New Amsterdam. At its peak, the community had approximately 225 residents, three churches, two schools, and three cemeteries.
On September 27, 1825, a 25-year-old African American man purchased three lots for $125 while the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (AME Zion Church) bought twelve lots for $578. Both men were part of the New York African Society for Mutual Relief, an organization whose members supported each other financially. The AME Zion Church bought six additional lots the same week, and by 1832, at least 24 lots had been sold to African Americans.
Seneca Village evolved into an African American Community of approximately 225 residents who were land owners and tenants. Seneca Village became a safe haven during the anti-abolitionist riots of 1834. Beginning on July 7, 1834, New York City was stormed by a huge antiabolitionist riot (also called the Farren Riot or Tappan Riot) that lasted for nearly a week when they attacked the homes, businesses, and churches of abolitionist leaders and ransacked black neighborhoods. By the 1840s, members of the city's upper class were publicly calling for the construction of a new large park in Manhattan. Where to put this park? Areas were reviewed and assessed and Seneca Village became the ideal location but what to do to gain control over this land?
Negative public actions began to take over the Seneca Village community to include references in pejorative terms, including racial slurs. Park advocates and the media began to describe Seneca Village as "a shantytown" and the residents there as "squatters" and "vagabonds and scoundrels!” The residents of Seneca Village were also accused of stealing food and operating illegal bars. Those charged with crafting viability reports wrote a report about the "refuge of five thousand squatters" living on the future site of Central Park, criticizing the residents as people with "very little knowledge of the English language, and with very little respect for the law". Other critics described the inhabitants as "stubborn insects" and used racial slurs to refer to Seneca Village.

"I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”-Sonya Massey 2024
Here we go again, The death of Sonya Massey has sparked outrage throughout Black communities as it did four years ago with George Floyd.
Sonya Massey, a 36 year old Black woman, was shot in the face by a White Police Officer after she took a pot of boiling water off of the stove and said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”. I went to a holiness church and heard the term often. It was to shoo the devil away. That Officer didn’t like that. In my opinion, he became demonic, shooting Sonya Massey in the face and then later referring to her as a crazy bi#@h
Sunday July 28th, 2024 was set as a National day of mourning in different cities across the country. As much as I did not want to be involved in any protest, I wanted to inform people of their rights. Millions have protested throughout the years and I have begun to wonder, is it enough? Who are we protesting to? Whoever runs the world (the Puppeteers), and they control the puppets, who are the Politicians, Police and Pastors (mind, body and soul). They then control the masses through elections, arrest and religion in the name of citizenship.
I went to a church and the Black Pastor said that WE stand with Israel. There were amens, but I pulled out my kufiya and during the amens, I said, “not everybody.” I visited Palestine in September 2023 with a group called Black Jerusalem. We were there for 10 days. This is when I learned about the Nakba, the displacement and takeover of Palestine by Isralies with the help of the Israeli government.
The war in Gaza is being used as an opportunity to kill off tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian women, children , journalists, and elderly, with no regard for life; and for what? Land!?
This is where the connection with America and its Black, and poor communities comes in. Black Wall street and the Trail of Tears shows how evil America is. Greed and a sense of entitlement for things that don’t belong to them has led to the genocide of our people. The negativity, the finger pointing, the tearing down of each other and the killing not only by ourselves, but by

state would have to enact a ban or give municipalities the option to enact their own ban. In either case he said he would support such a ban. University Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt said he would be in favor of passing a local law even if there is a risk of legal action.
No Menthol Buffalo is a project of Stan Martin Consulting LLC funded by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Action Fund.
Four out of five youth who have ever used a tobacco product, started with a flavored tobacco product. Eliminating menthol cigarettes, advocates point out, will improve the health of ethnic groups targeted by the tobacco industry.
Marcus Garvey Day in Buffalo Then and Now
The colors that we proudly display during Juneteenth on our flags, on our shirts and on our homes; - the RED, the Black, and the GREEN - were given to us by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. He was the most renowned African (Black) Man of the 20th century. Early in the 1900’s the King of Swaziland only knew of him and the heavyweight prize fighter Jack Johnson.
Today, as we approach one-fourth of the way through the 21 Century, Africans worldwide revere the legacy, the principles and practices of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey with exponential intensity. The enemies of the Rise of African People cannot stop the “whirlwind” of Garveyism. They can only join in to attempt to distort his legacy but they will fail!
Garveyism is Pan Africanism. It was through Garvey’s organization the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) that Pan Africanism first achieved a mass organizational character. Through the efforts of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and committed Africans throughout the world the UNIA was able to boast six-million members throughout the world in its heyday in the 1920’s. Imagine this at a time without cellphones, the internet, and Facebook, etc.
The UNIA was intended to be a beacon for our every need. Its media organ, The Negro World, provided us with information, history, and current events. Its African Community Leagues promoted business and commerce. The Black Star Line symbolized the concept that African people should control their own trade and resources on an international level. The Black Cross Nurses exemplified the practice of organized African woman championing the health and social needs of our people.
The history of the Pan African movement is rich and long. Garveyism is a pivotal limb of the PanAfrican tree and its branches produced seeds, including, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad and Kwame Nkrumah. Consequently we can claim that Garveyism nurtured African Nationalism and Black Power, two of the most significant and powerful political expressions of African People of the 20th century.
Marcus Garvey Day in Buffalo is evolving. It was originally
coined Marcus Garvey Unity Day in 1978 and 1979 by Keith Alexander and presented by Sunship Communications under the leadership of Clarence Smith. They brought in Chancellor Williams author of The Destruction of the Black Civilization, and poet, author, community activist and creator ofThirdWorld Press, Haki Mudhibuti respectively. During the early 1980s Kenneth and Sharon Holley of Harambee Books and Crafts spearheaded the Garvey Day efforts bringing in Tony Martin author of Race First and reinstituting the Garvey Day Parade from their bookstore on FillmoreAve. When Harambee Books and crafts changed owners, Brother Ausar Africa continued to keep Garvey Day alive and flourishing. The 100th Anniversary of Marcus Garvey’s birth was held at the Langston Hughes Institute and featured his son Marcus Garvey III as a keynote speaker.
The current committee emerged after the Million Man March. Its organizers sought to maintain the integrity of Garvey Day and establish it as a means of forging an African United Front of the organizations in our community seeking to raise the consciousness of our people. We emphasize the four pillars of Gaveyism LOVE of Self, Do for Self, the Primacy of Africa, and the Need for Organization. Additionally we have made a conscious effort to promote Garvey Day to the masses of our youth and have been hosting Garvey Day at the Martha Mitchell Center in the Kentfield Langfield Housing Projects since 2011.
The Malcolm X/Marcus Garvey Day Organizing Committee will be hosting Marcus Garvey Day 2024 on Saturday August 17 (the 137th anniversary of his birth), from 12p.m. – 8p.m. at the Martha Mitchell Center, 185 Oakmont St. Buffalo 14215. Our theme is "Re-learning through an African Centered Lens." The program will include the libation with Sister Iya Oyanike and Brother Rob X, the Pan-African drum circle (Calling on 100 drummers for African Unity) synchronized with Africans throughout the world at 1p.m. EST, Story-telling with Karima Amin, youth workshops, community speakers, food, the annual Garvey Day March, and the cultural show with music provided by DJ Shenuti Nehast Kawaida from Rochester. This is a free family event. For more information call (716) 400-8644, or email at MalcolmxMarcusgareycommittee@gmail.com. 100 Years of Mal-colm X

police or someone in the community. If you think about 50 people dying a year in Buffalo, that is about 200 young souls in four years. That is not including the number of incarcerated individuals. Are we really that blind to the doom that is mapped out for us? I am about creating solutions. We cannot count on anyone to save us. We, meaning the community. So while I support the protest movement in the wake of Sister Massey's murder by police, I choose to share information with those who gathered in solidarity last Sunday. as well as with the Challenger readers.
1. We have a 2nd amendment Right To Bear Arms. Get a pistol application, fill it out and turn it in. If denied, we can cross that bridge when we get to it. Also, go to a gun range and practice.
2.Fill out a complaint form with the State Attorney General against Officers for any misconduct, including false arrest. Don’t wait until the court case is over. We are being misled in so many ways. Go to https://formsnym.ag.ny.gov/OAGOnlineSubmissionForm/faces/OAGLEMIOHome
3. Contact Senator Sanders in support of Cariol’s Law which calls for The duty to Intervene as well as the other components to be included as written.https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/ bills/2023/S1889
4.Sign and share the petition for a National Police Registry. What happened to Sonya Massey and so many others, should not have happened, had a National Registry been established to prevent Police Officers from bouncing from department to department. https://www.change.org/National-Police-Registry
In this day and age where information is readily available, I am offering solutions that can be verified. I will continue to do that. It may keep you or someone you love alive
Community activist Cariol Horne is a former Buffalo police officer who was fired from the Buffalo Police Department and lost her pension after she physically stopped a fellow officer from choke holding a handcuffed Black man in 2006. In October 2020, Buffalo adopted "Cariol's Law," to require police to intervene if a fellow officer uses excessive force.Fifteen years later, in 2021, a New York court finally awarded her the pension.
Black
Wall Street Didn't Just Happened In Tulsa!
The city of Detroit had a 'Black Wall Street' sort of, as did many urban neighborhoods, in the 1960s. This happened when the City of Detroit took a thriving business and residential street and put an Expressway there, in the name of Urban Renewal. Sort of sounds like Buffalo and the 33 Expressway right?
Except, the Black folks in Detroit, Michigan will get the Expressway removed from their neighborhood! I guess the politicians and community activists in that city did not push their own personal agenda on the people negatively impacted, like they are doing here in Buffalo.
The East Side Parkways Coalition will go down in history as " A small group of dedicated preservationists and community activists who worked, hand and hand, with the residents of Humboldt Parkway, local environmental groups and most of the local and national media outlets, to try and prevent the City of Buffalo and the NYSDOT from making the same mistake they made when they removed the residents' homes and businesses and constructed an Expressway in their place, over 70 years ago."
So, what does Buffalo do that is no better than the initial building of the Expressway in the 1960s? The city and the state's governments are allowing a tunnel to be built under Humboldt Parkways to further assist White suburbanites to enter and exit the Black neighborhoods more quickly.
There have been at least five lawsuits filed by the East Side Parkways Coalition and several area organizations on behalf of over 70 plaintiffs who are current or past homeowners and residents on Humboldt Parkway. These courageous plaintiffs, many who are sick or whose family members have died, continue to hope that environmental and racial justice will come to them.
But regardless of the outcome of the lawsuits, history will record their struggle, sometimes against mis-informed or intentionally mis-leading groups that should be assisting them in getting clean air, and their right to live in a toxic free environment.
The legacy of the East Side Parkways Coalition will be: East Side Parkways Coalition was organized to fight for the residents of Humboldt Parkway to have a say in what was going to happen on their street, in their homes and how the political system has failed them on all levels of government and how their elected officials forgot about their commitment to serve We The People and not themselves.
In the future, let's say about 30 years from now, if they allow the tunnel to be built, they are going to be reminded of this fight, when they have to remove the trees that grow sideways, to repair the roof of the tunnel, or because the trees planted in 3 feet of soil, have died and must be removed and replaced.
We refer to the leaders who approved the construction of the Expressway as racist, shortsighted and visionless, for their roles in destroying one of the best Parkways in the world. Those who are touting the construction of the tunnel against the homeowners and community's wishes, will be thought of in no less of the same terms. Yes, I included racist because some Black officials are in position of power and authority that they can - and should -be judged and held accountable as other traditional racists.
