INSIDE ROCHESTER

Imam Mohammed’ Returns To Deliver Rochester's 4th Annual Independence Day Address

The 4th Annual Independence Day

Address will take place at the Memorial Art Gallery on Saturday, July 6, featuring keynote speaker Imam Earl Abdulmalik Mohammed. This year's theme, "The Sacred Aim of Neighborhood Excellence: Restoring the Lost Property of the American People," encourages reflection and action towards a more just and unified community. This is a free event and doors open at 12 noon.

In the spirit of Frederick Douglass’ historic address "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" delivered in Rochester, this event continues the legacy of challenging and inspiring our community to pursue true freedom and equality. Douglass' powerful words called for America to live up to its founding ideals by confronting the injustices of his time. Similarly, Imam Mohammed’s address will call on us to reflect on our progress and continue the pursuit of justice, dignity, and unity in our neighborhoods.

Imam Earl Abdulmalik Mohammed, a respected Muslim-American leader in the tradition of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, will share a message of hope, dignity, and commitment to elevate Black communities in Rochester. His address will focus on several themes including: Standing Up for Human Rights, Standing Up for Our Dignity. -Addressing the Soul-

The 4th Annual Independence Day Address is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. Imam Earl Abdulmalik Mohammed’s presence underscores the importance of leadership and visionary thinking in tackling the challenges we face. Join us in celebrating this significant event and be part of the movement to reclaim the lost property of our nation by committing to principles of human rights, dignity, and spiritual renewal.

The greater Rochester community and neighboring cities are invited to gather on July 6th for the 4th Annual Independence Day Address at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue.

Austin Steward Day in Rochester

His anti-racist July 5th speech helped pave the way for the ideas of freedom, citizenship and abolition of the great Frederick Douglass He will be memorialized as our brother-ancestor and one of the crucial forefathers of Black Rochester who still inspires us to fight for and center Black nationhood.

Following MLK Park Shooting Mayor Evans Announces Changes to Keep Public Spaces Safe

Mayor Malik Evans has announced multiple changes happening in the City of Rochester to address illegal gatherings and related gun violence in the city.

Two notable changes include the early closing of MLK Park, and the closure of a portion of Court Street every night until further notice. This follows after a shooting that occurred at MLK Park overnight Sunday that left multiple people injured.

Mayor Evans mentions a change made at MLK Park, closing the park at 8:00 p.m. instead of the original 11:00 p.m. closing time. Evans also says the city will be ‘camping down’ on the groups at the park after hours, with police positioned at the park in the overnight hours. Police say if anyone is found at the park after hours, they will be asked to leave or they will be removed.

A section of Court Street between Chestnut Street and the Traffic Circle will also close at 7:00 p.m. every night.

Both of these changes are listed as active until further notice in cooperation with city security.

"This Violence Has Got To Stop!"

Gun Violence Takes The Life of 3-Year-Old Ramone “Red” Carter. Funeral Service Announced. Two Teens

Indicted.

Last Friday another precious angel was lost to senseless violence in Buffalo when three-year old Ramone L Carter was hit by gunfire and killed while riding his tricycle and playing near his home with his siblings on Domedion Avenue. His 7-year-old sister, Jamia Griffin was grazed by a bullet. She was taken by ambulance to Oishei Children’s Hospital where she was treated for an injury to her back but survived.

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced Tuesday that a 16-year-old male and a 14-year-old male, both from Buffalo, were arraigned. The juvenile offender and adolescent offender have each been indicted on one count of Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree , one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and one count of Assault in the Second Degree. The investigation determined that the children were innocent bystanders and not the intended target of the shooting. The names of the accused were not released due to their age.

-Tragic Irony-

The tragic irony of his story is that Red's mother, Shakenya Griffin, was an active member of the Most Valuable Parents, an organization that focused on improving safety for our children.

“When I got outside all the kids were running around and I said ‘where my baby ?! He ran right to me.,” Shakenya, told the Challenger. “At first I didn’t notice he had been shot. There was blood on him … I snatched him up and ran to my neighbor's house…,,,I asked them to call 911…. and I collapsed on his grass .”

She said the police “came from out of nowhere” and rushed Ramone to ECMC where he died of his injuries.

She recalled that the only thing her daughter Jamia said was, “I was trying to save my little brother."

Shakenya wants to see justice for her son and just as fervently, she wants to see an end to the cycle of gun violence that continues to devastate families..

“This violence … has got to stop,” she said. “ I would never think in a million years I’d be burying my kid… my baby…I always wanted a boy. He was my only boy …..now I don’t have my boy.”

Home Going services for Red will be held this Friday, June 28th with the wake at 11a.m. and funeral at 12 noon at Greater Royal Worship Center 1335 Clinton Ave, Pastor Al Wilson.

Red would have turned four years old July 6.

-A Joy-

Words used to describe Ramone include “a joy, lovable, amazing.”

Although he was only three years old, he was already involved in educational endeavors. “He was in a Say Yes Program at School 99,” said his mom. “Starting in September he was going to School 90.”

He loved broccoli, hot noodles and spicy foods.

“I had him in a lot of different activities, like baseball and basketball camps," she continued. But Red, a true Buffalo Bills Fan, loved football the most and she said he would get angry if anyone talked about the Bills – especially about Josh Allen!

“He wanted to be a football player,” continued his mother. “I told him. He would have to wait until he turned 5 so he could play little league football.

-MVP Releases Statement-

The following statement was released by The Most Valuable Parents in the wake of the shooting.

"We are doing everything we can to support our beloved member Shakenya Griffin during this tragedy, she has done so much to help others in the community and we are so grateful of the support that the community is giving back to her. Most Valuable Parents (MVP) is known for advocating and supporting parents needs, but we also continue to educate others as being a local chapter of BRADY in bringing awareness to getting these illegal guns off our streets to policy makers and lobbyists. Let me be clear - we are not against the 2nd Amendment Right to bear arms and those that have a permit to carry and operate a gun - but if you are illegally exercising that Right and taking the lives of others - we have an issue with that but moreso with the

The Oklahoma Supreme Court recently dismissed a lawsuit that argued that the remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre should be compensated by that city, a blow to their ongoing fight for reparations more than 100 years after the attack.

The suit was an attempt to force the City of Tulsa and others to make recompense for the destruction of the once-thriving Black district by a White mob. In 1921 — on May 31 and June 1 — the White mob, including some people hastily deputized by authorities, looted and burned the district, which was referred to as Black Wall Street.

The Tulsa race massacre of 1921 was one of the most severe incidents of racial violence in U.S. history. It occurred in Tulsa, Oklahoma, beginning on May 31, 1921, and lasted for two days. The massacre left somewhere between 30 and 300 people dead, mostly African Americans, and destroyed Tulsa’s prosperous Black neighborhood of Greenwood, known as “Black Wall Street.” More than 1,400 homes and businesses were burned, and nearly 10,000 people were left homeless. Upcoming 2nd Annual "I Love You, Black Man" Event to Focus on Mental Health and Self-Care

F

ollowing the success of last year’s inaugural event, the "I Love You, Black Man" gathering is back for its second year, promising to expand on the crucial conversations surrounding mental health and self-care among Black men. The event, originally launched at Princessa's Studio and Art Gallery, made a significant impact by bringing together the community to discuss these oftenoverlooked topics.

This year's event aims to build on that foundation, providing attendees with practical tips, tools, and resources to support their mental well-being. A distinguished panel of speakers will lead the discussion, featuring Sherman Webb-Middlebrooks, Isaiah Gary, Rasheen Powell, and Mark Talley. Each panelist brings a wealth of knowledge and personal experience, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging dialogue.

In addition to the panel discussion, the event will explore various forms of self-care tailored specifically for Black men. Attendees can participate in a yoga session led by The Krazy Yogi, Shaquille Jones, who will guide them through techniques to promote relaxation and mindfulness. This holistic approach to self-care underscores the importance of physical wellness in conjunction with mental health.

A highlight of the evening will be the honoring of Daniel Robertson from SayYes Buffalo and Breaking Barriers mentoring program. He will receive the "Brown Bag Man of the Year" award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community and his dedication to mentoring and supporting young Black men.

The event will also feature a communal dinner, providing an opportunity for attendees to connect, share their experiences, and build a supportive network. This aspect of the evening emphasizes the importance of community and the role it plays in fostering a healthy and supportive environment for Black men.

To encourage participation and ensure that every Black man has the chance to experience this empowering event, tickets are priced at $20 for one or $30 for two, encouraging attendees to bring a friend.

Health Benefits of Collard Greens

Love Collards? Well check out this list of amazing benefits!

1. Collard greens may lower blood cholesterol.

Studies have suggested that eating collard greens lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or LDL cholesterol levels, known as the “bad” cholesterol. Thanks to the high fiber content in the vegetable, collards have a beneficial effect on both blood pressure and cholesterol, which improves overall heart health.

2. Collard greens may reduce cancer risk.

A 2017 study involving nearly 3,000 people suggests that cruciferous vegetables lower the risk of breast cancer. However, to maximize the positive effects of the greens, certain cooking methods (like steaming) are preferable.

3. Collard greens may improve bone health.

Collards contain a good amount of vitamin K, which research suggests may lower the risk of osteoporosis and bone breakage.

4. Collard greens may improve liver health.

Collards are high in fiber which aids in digestion and also associated with decreased risk of stroke and diabetes. Fiber is believed to reduce inflammation and levels of glucose among type 1 diabetes patients, and also maintain healthy insulin and lipid levels among those with type 2 diabetes.

5. Collard greens may help with digestion.

Another benefit of the collards’ fibrous nature is related to digestion. Fiber is often recommended in preventing or helping with constipation and improving regularity, and given the high fiber and water content of collard greens.

6. Collard greens may improve your aesthetics.

Vitamin A in collards helps to keep your immune system, eyes healthy, skin and your hair. Collards are also rich in vitamin C, which is critical for collagen production. Collards also contain iron as well, which is important to staving off anemia, as well as hair loss.

7. Collard greens can help you sleep better.

Thanks to the chlorine content in collards you may be able to sleep as it contains folate, which has been tested as a potential treatment for depression.

Stanley Jordan Playing Jimi Hendrix

World renowned guitarist Stanley Jordan fierce guitar playing especially on the neck of his guitar was astounding on “All Along the Watch Tower.”.. Jordan’s best guitar style is when he plays the neck of his guitar effortlessly and in total control of the instrument “I feel a strong connection to Jimi Hendrix because he was the first guitarist I emulated as a child,” said Jordan. “Out of love for Jimi and his music; I feel a strong desire to try to keep his legacy alive.” Stanley’s drummer, wearing goloshes boots above his ankles, seemed to be a throwback to that Hendrix era, and he played the drums very loud with passion and desire for the music. If you get a chance to see this tribute concert, I recommend you do so; This gritty raw performance was one of the weekends highlights.

Taj Mahal @ Eastman Theater

Taj Mahal had ten different guitars in front of him and by the time his set ended he had played all of them. On “Slow Drag, ” Taj took us to lovers’ lane when a time when couples made out; an innocent time when everything was subtle and not in your face. Taj Mahal is Blues man with a musicologist mind. He has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. “Once I learned the origin of the Banjo, I decided to start playing it,” he said.

Mahal’s l tribute to Hawaii was his Hawaiian steel guitarist Bobby Agoneno who performed a light airy tune that captivated our senses and made us feel like we were on the beautiful beaches of Waikikis. Taj Mahal has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, three-time Grammy winner and other honors highlight his career. Taj says” It’s not hunger, not lust or even a thirst” that drives him but “it’s just more knowledge of self to realize that almost everything is right here. We’re so used to looking outside of ourselves for things, and it’s right here.” Taj Mahal was born in 1942 but still plays with an intense passion for the love of music.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. The Clarksdale, Mississippi native in four short years has taken the Blues Music World by storm. The 24-year-old is raw, gritty, loud and soulful. Extraordinarily Talented Actresses Star in "Running on Faith: Freedom Seeker Stories”

"Running on Faith: Freedom Seeker Stories recorded by William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad, "was presented this past Friday and Saturday at the Paul Robeson Theater at the African American Cultural Center.

This production featured three extraordinary talented actresses, narrating women who had interactions with William Still. Vernice Turner portrayed Harriet Tubman, Mary Craig portrayed Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and Sandra Gilliam represented Caroline Still Wiley Anderson. Each engaging monologue reveals a story of faith, resistance and resiliency during this period of history. Some of the stories, especially of Frances Harper (writer) and Caroline Anderson (daughter of William Still) are not as well known as Harriet Tubman's.

The stage is set with all three scenes and is accompanied by Serless Adams and Beverly Newkirk of Phenomenal Ladies of Rhythm who provide introductory and scene change rhythms for each speaker.

"Running on Faith: Freedom Seeker Stories recorded by William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad," created, produced and directed by Celeste Lawson, is scheduled to be performed again this summer at Freedom Park. Don't miss your chance to hear first person narratives of African American History. Check the Challenger for details.

Healing By The Water: Freedom Park Summer Celebration Kicks Off July 11

The 4th season of “Healing At The Park,” a series of highly successful free outdoor summer celebrations at the foot of Ferry near Niagara, kicks off July 11 for the first time under the banner of its location’s historic new name - Freedom Park.

The successful effort to change the name was led by the Freedom Park’s visionary president George Johnson, to better represent its important significance to the Underground Railroad.

”Freedom Park is considered sacred ground by Buffalo’s African American community as many of the ancestors lost their lives while attempting to cross to freedom from this spot,” the organization outlined in their petition for the name change from, Broderick Park last year.

The unveiling of a giant mural paying homage to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad leading into Freedom Park also took place in 2023. -The Healing Continues-

Healing by the Water will take place every Thursday July 11 thru September 12 from 5-8 p.m. featuring 10 weeks of live bands, food and merchandise vendors, positive energy and more.

The overall 2024 theme, said Johnson, is Celebrating Our Freedom.

them. This vile act is just another example of how as a community we can all agree - that VIOLENCE HURTS - its just that simple! -Carlanda Meadors - MVP Spokesperson

MVP Founder Neal Dobbins' Crusade Against Illegal Guns

In July of 2020, The Most Valuable Parents (MVP) and its late founder Neal Dobbins announced an anti-gun violence initiative. It was billed as just the beginning of an unprecedented, unified effort to stop illegal guns from flooding our inner city communities. The Buffalo crusade had far reaching, national implications, given that the gun violence problem has reached epidemic proportions in inner cities across the nation.

The framework of the organization’s “2020 Anti-Gun Violence Action Plan marked by the unification of all the front line anti-violence organizations; the formation of an Urban Think Tank; and an on going education component (i.e. the billboards).

However, most significant and potentially far reaching, was the campaign to repeal The Tiahrt Amendment, passed in 2003 which basically protects rogue gun dealers by preventing the collection of valuable information, and the establishment of effective policies to trace and prevent the proliferation of illegal guns especially in inner cities. The law itself is criminal! Former Congressman Brian Higgins was on board and did in fact champion the community's call for the repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment on the House floor.

“The question at the forefront of this movement,” declared brother Dobbins, “ is where did they get the guns? We don’t have an assault rifle problem on the East side of Buffalo we have a hand gun problem…This community is flooded with handguns!

" We have to find strategies to stop these guns from coming into our community”…and everybody has to be a part of finding a solution.” -a.b.

US Surgeon General Declares Gun Violence A Public Health Crisis

The U.S. surgeon general on Tuesday declared gun violence a public health crisis, driven by the fast-growing number of injuries and deaths involving firearms in the country. To drive down gun deaths, Murthy calls on the U.S. to ban automatic rifles, introduce universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulate the industry, pass laws that would restrict their use in public spaces and penalize people who fail to safely store their weapons.

The National Rifle Association promptly rebuked Murthy’s advisory.

BLACK HISTORY continued from page 3

sands of survivors were forced for a time into internment camps overseen by the National Guard. Burned bricks and a fragment of a church basement are about all that survive today of the more than 30-block historically Black district.

The two survivors of the attack, Lessie Benningfield Randle and Viola Fletcher, who are both now over 100 years old, sued in 2020 with the hope of seeing what their attorney called “justice in their lifetime.” A third plaintiff, Hughes Van Ellis, died last year at age 102.

The city and insurance companies never compensated victims for their losses, and the massacre ultimately resulted in racial and economic disparities that still exist today, the lawsuit argued. It sought a detailed accounting of the property and wealth lost or stolen in the massacre, the construction of a hospital in north Tulsa and the creation of a victims compensation fund, among other things. The lawsuit was dismissed on June 12, 2024..

Chaos In Kenya: President Backs Down on Tax Hikes

In a sudden reversal Wednesday, Kenyan President William Ruto said he plans to withdraw a controversial finance bill that had sparked violent protests and a deadly government crackdown that saw 23 people killed Tuesday, when police opened fire on demonstrators who stormed Parliament minutes after the lawmakers passed the bill.

“I concede,” Ruto said during a press conference Wednesday, citing “widespread expression of dissatisfaction,” destruction and the loss of life.

“I will not sign the 2024 finance bill and it shall subsequently be withdrawn,” Ruto said.

The move will be seen as a major victory for a week-old, youth-led protest movement that grew from online condemnations of tax rises into mass rallies demanding a political overhaul, in the most serious crisis of Ruto's two-year-old presidency.

However protesters were defiant, repeating calls for Ruto to step down and vowing further action in the streets.

Boniface Mwangi, a prominent social justice activist involved in the protests, called for a "1-million-people march".

"The arrogance is gone, but the lies are still there," he said on social media platform X. "Yesterday they unleashed goons and police to kill peaceful protesters. That will not stop us."

Other members of the protest movement continued to post on social media using the hashtag #tupatanethursday, or "see you on Thursday" in a mix of Swahili and English.

Ruto said he would now start a dialogue with Kenyan youth, without going into details, and work on austerity measuresbeginning with cuts to the budget of the presidency - to make up the difference in the country's finances.

The 2024 Finance Bill, which was first presented in Parliament last month, introduced new taxes and levies that would increase the price of goods such as bread, diapers, sanitary napkins, and cars; also I also raised taxes on digital businesses and food delivery services; items such as egg imports and specialist hospital equipment was the final straw for many younger and poorer Kenyans.

Frustration at the tax bill that would raise the cost of living on an already strained population had exploded into a month of escalating violence in Kenya, which has historically been one of Africa’s most stable “democracies.” Thousands took to the streets, set Parliament on fire, called for the president’s resignation and threatened to occupy his official residence. According to Reuters, more than 200 protesters were injured in the month of protests.

Various groups alleged that 50 protesters were abducted ahead of Tuesday’s bloody violence.

Rights advocacy group Amnesty International, meanwhile, said at least 12 prominent people involved in the protest movement had also been abducted in the five days leading up to Tuesday's unrest.

"This 4th of July is Yours, Not Mine"

Frederick Douglass Famous Speech, Delivered In Rochester NY,Still Resonates 172 Years Later

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration and asked, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”Douglass was a powerful orator, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition.

His speech, given at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence - DURING WHICH TIME BLACKS WERE STILL ENSLAVED - was held at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York. It was a scathing speech in which Douglass stated, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine, You may rejoice, I must mourn."

Douglass stated that the nation's founders were great men for their ideals of freedom. But in doing so he brings awareness to the hypocrisy of their ideals by the existence of slavery on American soil. Douglass continues to interrogate the meaning of the Declaration of Independence, to enslaved Africans in America experiencing grave inequality and injustice:

In the oration’s most famous passages, Douglass discussed what it felt like to see such festivities and to know independence was not a given for people like him:

“Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? And am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble \

Still Our Ancestors Cry!

PART 1 OF A 2-PART SERIES

No impromptu attempt at a dissertation outlining the extent of our Maafa could do justice to hearing of our People’s Cry to have their story told. That full story must come from the soul/spirit of our people demanding justice! Demanding justice for them and through that demanding it for ourselves.

My name is BaBa Omowale Eng and from what I have learned from studying our history is that our Ancestors were forced to undergo the greatest tragedy known to human beings on this planet.

And let me be clear, the mere idea of tragedy is not even sufficient to bring to mind the horrors experienced by the human beings who are our Ancestors.

'They Don't Care About Us' Is More Than A Michael Jackson Song

The fact that there was peace; that was more than just the absence of war in the Nationhood built by our Ancestors is important. Africans BEFORE the beginning of the Transatlantic Slave trade lived in peace and prosperity not known since that time!

Understanding that Peace is essential to knowing what the Maafa is and what we should understand it as being more than just the absence of war. From my studies, it was a peace based on the ability of our Ancestors to achieve Ma'at in their day to day lives. That meant they were able to establish a harmony among themselves and thereby align themselves with the Truth of Creation, in alignment with Our Creator.

They were, through mutual agreements, able to establish order in a society that was brought together based upon the balance and harmony of people’s thinking and being in the world. Everyone had to agree to do what was right or be exiled or ostracized from our society. It was that simple.

Once that agreement was had, all people embraced the idea of reciprocity and were willing to give of themselves in order to receive what they needed for family and community. We understood that family was the building block of Nationhood and therefore we gave everything to our families and community. By that commitment we were able to build a Nation that was united in a solidarity that astounded the world. Ma’at was the governing ideology of our Nationhood.

That concept of Nationhood, national government, was copied from us from the very beginning, ie, the whole idea of American democracy came from White people studying how we governed ourselves and then twisting it to fit their agenda. Even to the point of naming their highest office, The White House, after THE ORIGINAL WHITE HOUSE THAT WAS FIRST BUILT IN ANCIENT KEMIT/AFRICA!

I am talking about Black people, Africans in Kush and Punt, Zimbabwe and Alkebulan before the invasion of White people that started with the Hittites and then the Hyksos and then the Macedonians and then the rest of the European hordes that gathered together to steal what they saw us build.

YES, STEAL WHAT THEY SAW US BUILD, COPY ALL THAT WAS GOOD and force us to build for them what came to be known as European civilization.

My people, understanding these time lines is important because the Maafa did not begin with us in chains or what we have come to know as the transatlantic slave trade. It began when the first White people came in contact and conquest with the Original Hueman beings that Our Creator placed on this planet, Us.

So, when we talk about the continuation of the great tragedy, the Maafa, where White people decided again to attack, wage war against and enslave Black people, we have to start with each of the truths as we know them from documentation.

For example, when we get to the Berlin Conference where European hordes came together again and decided to enslave African people and carve up Africa, take the natural resources/ riches out of Africa and build what they would call Civilization, we first have to look at what hordes are we talking about? Well, we are talking about Spain and Portugal; the Dutch and the French, the Belgians and the Arabs, the Germans and the Italians, and most all of the White countries that had armies and ships.

Next, we look at the intent which came to be known as the transatlantic slave trade. For that, there is documentation, the records kept at the Insurance companies, with the families that financed this european enterprise. They came together here in America, in Great Britain and other countries where White people kept records so they could keep profiting off of our enslavement. According to the records kept in London, Germany and Arabia, for example, they estimate that over 100 million Africans were taken out of Africa between 1400 and 1866/67. Other sources estimate even higher numbers of Africans taken from the shores of Africa. Remember, we know that White people always try to minimize the harm and wrong they are caught doing so as to justify minimum punishment or responsibility.

NEXT PART 2 CONCLUSION: "Reject The Lie Of Our Inferiority And Do The Work Of Studying Our History To Erase The Mystery And Find The Truth Of Our Huemanity."

Your Brother/Servant, BaBa Omowale Eng

For decades now, folks have tried to figure out who the 'They' was as well as the 'Us' in Michael Jackson's song, They Don't Care About Us. Many persons believed Michael was referring to Black people as the Us until Mr. Jackson released several videos of the same song with different groups of persons providing the background or the audience.

In one video, Michael was shown recording the video with a group of men who were dressed in blue prison garb and appeared to be in some sort of detention or incarceration center. In another video promoting the same song, he performed the song in a ghetto or impoverished area of a city that looked somewhat like Brazil. In clips of the video, one could clearly see one theme that seemed to imply that people were being treated differently because of their skin color, financial status or their criminal standing within or outside of the law enforcement system.

I am not exactly sure but for me, the Us in the song meant deprivation of a person's basic right to freedom, justice and a fair and unbiased attainment to a clean and healthy environment and equitable treatment for all.

And that is why it is so hard for me to read a local newspaper's editorial where it was asking our NYS Governor, Kathy Hochul, for a fast and fair resolution for the residents in the city of North Tonawanda who have suffered from the loud noise in their community coming from a procedure called BitCoin Mining. Now, I will admit that I know little to nothing regarding the mining of ' Bit Coin' but I am pretty sure there is no shoveling or digging involved. What I do know is that a company, that has been operating their business in North Tonawanda for a couple of years, has been using computers or super computers that are extremely noisy and use a lot of fossil fuel that is emitting a lot of carbon monoxide or other pollutants.

The good thing the good people of North Tonawanda can look forward to is assistance from their elected officials in bringing relief and possibly a workable solution. The very young and seemingly progressive mayor of the city has called for a moratorium on the expansion of the operation the BitCoin company's owners have requested. The governor has weighed in by stating that the residents have put up with a lot of noise and pollution in their community for a number of years and solutions must be explored.

Excuse me, but the residents of Humboldt Parkway have put up with death, illnesses, noise and pollutants coming from the community divided by the 33 Kensington Expressway for over 70 years! And yet, instead of coming to their aid, the governor, New York State Department of Transportation and the officials from the NY State Legislature are making a 70 year old mistake worse by putting a toxic tunnel on only 1/4 of the Expressway covering Humboldt Parkway.

I am not reluctant to use race and economic status as the reasons the two groups of citizens cited here were treated differently by the governor. We all know that the makeup of households on Humboldt Parkway are majority African American and are low to middle class to struggling. We also know that many long time residents are sick or have died from diseases and illnesses that can be attributed to their houses proximity to the carbon monoxide laden Expressway. But in spite of all that we know, the state authorities in charge of the 'Cap and Stitch' Tunnel Project have not surveyed the homeowners for a health care check or called for an Environmental Impact Statement to be implemented.

Michael Jackson was absolutely right in saying "They don't care about us" but he was lack in explicitly saying who the US was. So I shall say who I believe he was talking about. It is people like the poor, elderly and sick residents of Humboldt Parkway who had to be driven to file lawsuits for clean air and a non-cancer causing or toxic free environment, in order for the government to acknowledge and to listen to their demands and concerns.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS continued from page 10

offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?

"What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy — a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.”

" I do not hesitate to declare, with all my soul, that the character and conduct of this nation never looked blacker to me than on this 4th of July! Whether we turn to the declarations of the past, or to the professions of the present, the conduct of the nation seems equally hideous and revolting."

" America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future."
