The festival gates will open at 2 PM and will officially kick off at 3 PM, Saturday, Aug. 24 with performances by LunaSolchild, Mark Bass, Dej Laren, Nyk Tyrell, Anthony Dounte, Jamall Youngblood, Dawn & Daze, Regina Belle, Ruff Endz, and Dru Hill featuring Scola, Nokio, Tao, Sisqó, Smoke, Black and Jazz. Buffalo Bills Divorce Diggs

As I stated in a previous article, at end of the season Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs would not be back for the 2024 season.

I was only surprised that Diggs was traded before June 1st, which would have allowed Bills General Manager Brandon Beane to break his cap hit into 15.5 M dead money Cap hit for the next two seasons instead of 31.5 million all at once for the 2024 season.

It’s becoming quite obvious that the Bills front office has decided to play the 2024 season with rookies and any players that are completely cheap. This is commonly known as a Bridge season. The Buffalo Bills should be back fighting for a serious Super Bowl contention in the 2025-2026 season. Instead, they decided to get as much dead money off of the books in 2024 and really ramp back up with high quality free agents starting in 2025. How did we get here? Well after going for the ring for the past three seasons we lost that 13 second game by Head Coach Sean McDermott having a terrific meltdown in the Kansas Chiefs playoff game which was our best chance to make a Super Bowl run.

The Von Miller contract is a ridiculous deal made by Beane/ McDermott which will still have salary cap ramifications in the future. Let’s face it, Bills QB Josh Allen can’t play under pressure very well, especially with your wide receiver complaining about not getting the ball in critical situations. Bills General Brandon Beane said, “I don’t think Diggs made All Pro’s and Pro Bowl with the Vikings but he made three with us and I want to personally thank Stefon Diggs for all of his contributions to our team. We will continue to work on this roster and make sure we will be ready to play in September.”

Building on that legacy, the 29th Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival will be more momentous and garner even more regional excitement this year.”

The Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival is a City of Rochester event produced by Xperience Live Events and made possible by the sponsorship of Wegmans, Constellation Brands, MVP Health Care, ESL Credit Union, WDKX and CGI Communications.

For more information and updates on the Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival, visit www.rocsummersoulfest.com.

This means Josh Allen must all of a sudden become the true leader of this team. I have serious reservations about Josh being able to do this because he lacks confidence in reading defenses and is just now learning how important it is to not turn the football over. He can now be more relaxed and throw the football to who is open rather than your top receiver. Allen is the one who normally becomes discombobulated on the field and makes stupid mistakes. Keep in mind Diggs was very good at reading defenses and making big time plays during a game and informing Allen of key reads on the sideline or field which is a part of the game that Allen will miss.

Allen must really become the vocal leader and it’s going to be very interesting to see who else steps up into a leadership role to assist him. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane had already released quality players like Mitch Morse, Jordan Poyer, Siran Neal, and Tre Davious White.

Who else must go now that you created more of a Cap problem than first anticipated? There’s plenty of rookie wide receivers available in the draft but whether or not Brandon Beane can work some magic to just keep the Bills competitive in 2024 will be the big question to be answered during the 2024 season.

Tyrell Ford Named New Executive Director of VOICE Buffalo

Fifty-five years ago on April 2, 1969, the NYPD's Bureau of Special Services (BOSS) swooped down on 21 members of the New York Chapter of the Black Panther Party in pre-dawn raids across the city.

This was the public beginning of the infamous New York Panther 21 Conspiracy Trial. Only 13 members of the New York Panthers actually stood trial, among whom were Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, Afeni Shakur, and Sundiata Acoli.

Tyrell Ford has been named the new Executive Director of VOICE Buffalo. A native New Yorker, he’s an alumnus of Buffalo State University. Despite challenges, including a period of incarceration, he earned an MBA in Management from National American University in 2014. Tyrell channels his firsthand experience with the justice system into advocacy, striving to reform it on a daily basis. He’s been a key advocate for numerous initiatives including the passage of “Clean Slate, ” a bill designed to give justice impacted folks first and second chances. Additionally, he enjoys serving as the Board President of The Galactic Tribe, which promotes Afro-futurism among children and young adults. The Panther 21 Case as it would come to be known, became a cause celebrè of America's anti-Vietnam war and anti-racist New Left and would highlight the public criminalization of Black radical movements by the then covert FBI Counterintelligence Program, COINTELPRO and the federal government's collaboration with local police agencies to kill and imprison Black revolutionaries.

The indictments of Bobby Seale, Chairman of the Black Panther Party and his subsequent trial in Chicago along with White anti-war radicals known as the "Chicago Seven", the murder of Chicago Panther leader Fred Hampton all followed within a year of the New York Panther 21 conspiracy indictment. The killings of Jonathan Jackson at the Marin County Courthouse, the Indictment of Angela Davis and her subsequent capture and trial, the murder of George Jackson in the California gulag, all followed in the wake of the New York Panther 21 conspiracy trial, and the subsequent acquittal of all its defendants two years later in May of 1971. HEALTH MATTERS

Ancient Egyptian/African Medicine

Imhotep, a Black man, revered as the god of healing in Ancient Egypt, is considered the Father of modern medicine.

Imhotep lived a life knowing that everything is connected and nothing can be isolated as having no effect on everything it is a part of. The longevity of his influence remains alive today.

Altogether, around 50 percent of the plants used in ancient Egypt remain in clinical use in "modern" times. Many of the medical and surgical instruments such as knives and forceps have not changed their design since the ancient Africans first sent out this knowledge to the world.

•Today, researchers are still discovering “new” cures based on old Egyptian remedies, such as eating celery to help curb inflammation associated with arthritis

•The ancient Egyptian physicians treated wounds with honey, resins (including cannabis resin) and elemental metals known to be antimicrobial. This practice is still a valid medical protocol even today.

•Just like in this modern times, the prescriptions for laxatives included castor oil and colocynth and bulk bran and figs were used to promote regularity.

•Other references show that cumin and coriander were used as intestinal carminatives.

•Musculo-skeletal disorders were treated with rubefacients to stimulate blood flow and poultices to warm and soothe similar to the practices of modern practitioners of sports medicine .

•Interestingly, certain remedies prescribed by Egyptian physicians were way ahead of modern anticipation. For instance, celery and saffron which were used for rheumatism, are currently hot topics of pharmaceutical research, and pomegranate was used to eradicate tapeworms, a remedy that remained in clinical use until 50 years ago.

•Acacia is still used in cough remedies while aloe forms a basis to soothe and heal skin conditions. The knowledge and the uses of essential oils and resins were also introduced to the world by the ancient Egyptians.

•The early Egyptians appear to have been the first to recognize that stress could contribute to illness. They established sanitariums where people would undergo “dream therapy” and treatments with “healing waters.”

• Egyptians appear to have been the first to recognize that stress could contribute to illness

.•Ancient Egypt (3300BCE to 525BCE) is where the first dawn of modern medical care has been found also included bone setting, dentistry, simple surgery, and the use of different sets of medicinal pharmacopeias (Nunn, 2002).

Healing Community Celebration Remembrance Ceremony April 18!

Aligned with their recent three month workshop series to help heal the community and those affected by the 5/14 massacre, The New Masters and Cultrue Invite the public to “More Than Just February” Community Celebration Remembrance Ceremony a free event on April 18 , 5:30p.m. at the Tri-Main Building 2495 Main Street Suite 441.

Similar to a traditional African ceremony (Maafa) used to say goodbye and acknowledge all lives lost, The Community Remembrance Ceremony will be a celebration of life while holding space for and remembering our ancestors that we have lost, and those that have been taken from us in tragic events.

This ceremony, highlighting storytellers, African drummers and dancers, will be healing and will encourage the community to heal out loud and heal together which is necessary for our community in light of all of the collective loss experienced last year. The belief is that speaking the names of our ancestors out loud empowers us to not only heal but to reimagine what loss looks like moving from a painful experience to a celebration of eternal life.

Gemetocally Modified Food

Genetically modified foods (GMO) include Fresh Del Monte’s pink pineapples and nonbrowning Artic apples. They make up only a fraction of the GMOs sold in the U.S. Genetically modified fruits and veggies include summer squash, papayas, and genetically modified salmon. But in the U.S., GMOs are much more likely to show up in processed foods like cooking oils, soy products, sweeteners, and snack foods. Almost all of the soybeans, corn, sugar beets, and canola planted in the U.S. are genetically modified.

"BLACK CLASSICAL MUSIC": APRIL IS JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH!

In 2001, Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) was founded by John Edward Hasse who was a curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History which first announced the Jazz Appreciation Month initiative with the help of Quincy Jones at a press conference in July of that year. The first Jazz Appreciation Month was celebrated in April of the following 2002. Years later the initiative has now expanded to encompass celebrations in all 50 states as well as 40 countries including Spain, Taiwan, England, Argentina, and Brazil.

•“Jazz – also known as “Black Classical Music” - is recognized around the world as specifically American music and is sometimes even referred to as freedom music. is seen as a large part of American heritage.”

•Jazz was first compiled by musicians in African-American communities in New Orleans, Louisiana, the United States by the late 19th century and early 20th century. Characterized by blues notes, jazz became the signature dancing music at nightclubs while inspiring improvisation to bring something newer and hipper every time as the music evolved.

Born in America. Enjoyed Worldwide. Jazz is a conversation. Jazz is a dialog. Jazz is the universal language that crosses borders and has no boundaries. As Quincy Jones wrote, “Jazz has the power to make men forget their differences and come together. Jazz is the personification of transforming overwhelming negative circumstances into freedom, friendship, hope, and dignity.

"Attending this program has been one of the greatest decisions of my life. Before joining this program, (being honest with what I’m going to say) I felt disappointed in myself. I thought I was a bad person making bad decisions and I thought I couldn’t change. This program is one of the only reasons I still believe in myself. It’s taught me how to be kind, both to myself and to others. It’s teaching me how to Speak Life Twice, how to inspire myself and others."

Our City Action Buffalo: Working to Change Systems to Ensure Racial, Social and Economic Justice for All Buffalonians

Our City Action Buffalo, also known as OCAB, is an organization of Buffalo residents from every geographic area and socioeconomic status of the city. The mission and vision of OCAB is to disrupt the political status quo through movement and people-centered policies and cogovernance structures. We work to change systems to ensure racial, social, and economic justice for all Buffalonians.

OCAB runs smart and strategic campaigns to take back the city from vulture developers, self-serving political machines, and out-of-town capital hellbent on turning our beloved city into an eds-and-meds hub for the wealthy few, at the expense of communities of color, poor, and working-class people.

We are committed to electing leaders who are accountable to the people who elect them, and we’ve endorsed candidates whose lived experiences resemble our own. A new day is dawning in Buffalo politics and it’s being led by everyday Buffalonians who are putting people first.

Over the course of the past few years, we’ve made some serious noise.

We were the leading voice for democracy during the city’s redistricting process, and made it clear gerrymandered maps that serve as “incumbent protection plans” are not okay. We also partnered with community organizers, activists, and civil rights attorneys to stop ShotSpotter, an ineffectual and expensive gunshot detection system, for the first successful campaign in the country

This year, we’re committing more resources to educating the public on the issues that matter most in our city. We'll be publishing a column every month in The Challenger, plus we recently started a podcast called F/ ACT UP which you can access on the WUFO website at www.power96.5 radio.com under their podcast section.

The first episode is dedicated to the genesis of Our City Buffalo (our sibling organization) and Our City Action Buffalo, as well as our mission, vision, and how we get it done on the ground for real people. We’ve also covered local organizations and actions to demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza through the ballot box and a Buffalo Common Council resolution, adding to the powerful call from one of the nation’s most important civil rights organizations, the NACCP. We’ll also be talking about the Kensington Expressway, the City of Buffalo 2024-2025 budget, and plenty of other issues making headlines in the coming months.

This April we’ll launch various committees to broaden and deepen the work, from organizing individual members and building a lasting framework for transformative change to creating more fair and equitable policies at the city level, to amplifying the message of grassroots leaders in our communities, it’s all part of what we do and who we are.

To get involved or to talk about any of our current programming, please contact me at Leighton at leighton@ourcityactionbuffalo.com

Remembering The Rwandan Genocide

April 7 marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the Rwanda genocide in 1994. The genocide is estimated to have killed nearly one million Tutsi and thousands of moderate Hutu while the outside world did nothing, justifying its inaction in torturous legal reasoning and misleading assertions that the unfolding massacre was not really genocide but a local tribal dispute.

- The Impact of Belgian Colonization of Rwanda: Racism, Division and Exploitation-

In commemorating the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi, we affirm the integrity of Rwanda and the Rwandan people. They were torn asunder by the German and Belgian governments and the Belgian White Fathers for whom a morally perverted form of religion and destructive colonialism went hand in hand. They worked together in arrogance and willful ignorance of Rwandan culture and civilization—with their bigoted, racist ideologies—when they forced themselves upon Rwanda during colonization.

The Belgian government ruled Rwanda particularly catastrophically and ruthlessly. They built upon Germany’s racist policies in Rwanda, and, by cultivating division and hate in Rwandan society; employing a divide and conquer strategy of invasion, conquest, discrimination and persecution, helped lay the groundwork for mass murder and genocide. They destroyed Rwanda’s physical and spiritual integrity, freedom and independence—politically, religiously, culturally and socially. They exploited Rwandans to fight in their wars only to betray Rwandans following their ultimate sacrifice with ingratitude and malice.

They destroyed an indigenous culture and form of governance that integrated Hutus and Tutsis into diverse clans. Instead, they cultivated artificial and foreign notions of essentialized and racialized Hutus and Tutsis. Rwandans know the horrific consequences of this coercive and racist Belgian reconstruction of Rwandan social and political identities in the service of dividing Rwandans and alienating them from one another to advance Belgian colonization and its pernicious aims. Rwanda neither asked for nor needed Europeans to meddle in its affairs and offer false promises. But the Germans and Belgians did not ask— they felt entitled—they invaded, attacked and plundered. Rwanda lives with the murderous consequences of their colonization and racism and the mass resentment, jealousy and violence it begot every day.

The Belgian government—with its relentless history of colonization not only in Rwanda but also in Burundi and Congo and Belgian racism against Rwandans—both Hutus and Tutsis, and since 1959, directed against Tutsis—owes an infinite debt to the Rwandan people and particularly to Rwanda’s Tutsi minority. The Belgian government conveniently and narcissistically imagined the Congolese, Burundians and Rwandans as savages—projecting its own brutality, immorality and utter ignorance and the evil of its racist theories onto the peoples Belgium oppressed and subjugated. Belgium has yet to acknowledge its moral and legal responsibility for its unconscionable crimes in Africa in any meaningful and significant way that will address its legacies of harm, violence, death and attacks on African democratic self-rule and on the human rights of Africans. Its racist legacy still powerfully informs Belgian law, government and society today.

To the colonial Belgians who thought they arrived in a dark continent laden with jungle and any who sympathize with them we say, never and never and never again shall you bring your moral darkness and your racism to dominate, discriminate, dehumanize, devalue and divide—not in Congo, not in Burundi, not in Rwanda and not anywhere in Africa. Better for Belgium to develop its as yet unmastered skill of effectively self-governing a population divided between the Flemish and Walloons, with little love lost between them. Belgium’s reckless and arrogant sense of entitlement brought violence and destruction on a scale and scope that Rwanda, Burundi and Congo never experienced prior to the arrival of Europeans. Whatever heart of darkness Belgium’s colonizers thought they encountered in Africa was their own and remains their own as many still celebrate and honour the Belgium’s sadist king, Leopold, who killed and tortured over one million Congolese.

Only An African Mind

All thanks to Our Creator who grounded us in the Blackness of all that exists in this and all Universes, so that we would be able to distinguish Truth from Falsehood when we center ourselves. And now, more than at any other time, we are called to see, recognize and act on the truths that we can plainly see.

Yes, we are Blessed to see beyond the distractions, the memes and other symbols that are intentionally created and placed before our vision to take us off track from The Truth that really sets us free from the traumas that are upon us now and have haunted us all our lives.

My Beautiful people, yes, it is that Blessing from Our Creator, who decided that we would be born Black and come to this life armed to struggle and survive and then thrive as we join with each other to overcome as we overstand all that the enemy of freedom, equity and equality would throw at us.

Yes, I know we don't often think about it like this because everything around us talks about the opposite of truth, like telling us that Black is not as Beautiful as it is, or that we don’t have the super intelligence and genius that we have.

Yes, I know it is as hard for you as it has been for me, to sift through all of the lies that are placed before us daily, as they seek to keep us distracted, while they manipulate reality. Of course, they think and hope that when we do wake up, they will have put all their negativity in place.

They count on that negativity being embodied in the reality of a creature with orange hair and an albino spirit. They think that sliding d.j. trump into the White House will enable them to enact their real agenda of re-enslaving Black People and excluding everybody else from any kind of authority or power to protect themselves in a dictatorship where trump is president for life and there is no law but his. Please just think about that for a minute.

No, My People, we the descendants of Africa, have been blessed with the fortitude to withstand all the onslaughts of lies and terror, brutality and murder that our righteous ancestors knew our enemies would be igniting upon us.

We know that in psychology, the idea of being centered in order to manifest our best self in our true abilities is a reality we must now center on. We must also listen for the words that will signal to us that the enemy believes that they have won: like d.j. trump saying on National radio, that he has been chosen by G.O.D. to lead this Country.

He thinks that while everyone is outraged and angered by President Biden's complicity in the horrors that are going on in Palestine that we will let Biden off the hook of all that he promised to Black people in getting him elected, and vote for anyone else out of that anger. He thinks that we are so unsophisticated politically that we don’t see the forest for the trees. He thinks that the votes will get split between everybody except Biden so he can slide into the White House and fulfill the Southern agenda of re-enslaving Black people and taking power from everybody else.

He thinks he has hoodwinked and bamboozled all of us, all over again.

Just think of that, My people, while he thought we were looking the other way, d.j. trump actually came out and signaled to his people that The G.O.D that they serve has chosen him to be president.

Our enemies have underestimated us once again. They thought that to keep us looking at everything and everyone except those we should be watching and checking to keep us out of any matrix that would derail us, that they could just slide in. NO!

My People, My Beautiful, Strong, Intelligent Black Men and Black Women, We have been blessed so that we can overcome the matrix. We are ready to move forward into the future that our ancestors and fore parents left for us.

Yes, We are the heavy melanated inheritors of the real legacy of “Never Again!" so we would not again be hoodwinked or bamboozled by anyone or anything founded in fear and anger, resentment and revenge, outrage and certainly not in rage!
