Update: African Heritage Food Co-Op Appealing to IRS for Reinstatement of Not for profit Status

Aself” initiative designed to tackle the East Side “food desert" with the goal of bringing healthy, affordable food to the community.

Over a year ago co-founder and president Wright released impressive renderings and announced the Co-op was scheduled to open their flagship location at 238 Carlton Avenue in the Fruit Belt - then billed as a $3.5 project - in August of 2023. The projected opening date has since been changed to the summer of 2024. At that time they also boasted of having operated a Niagara Falls Store on Highland Avenue as well as a mobile produce market. Additionally, his Wright-Way Consulting firm owns the 22-acre Blegacy Farms in Franklinville, 53 miles south of Buffalo.

However it was recently reported that the Co-op had its 501(3)c nonprofit status removed last May 15 because the African Heritage Economic Initiative failed to file mandatory IRS forms three years in a row. Such filings offer an accounting of a nonprofit financial activities. The IRS did not post the revocation until August 8. Meanwhile, the Heritage Co-Op has amassed a substantial amount of funding including a $3 million grant from the State last year earmarked to transform the Carlton Avenue building. There have also been additional substantial grants and loans awarded to the Heritage Co-op project.

State officials told The News that no funds would be disbursed until the project received board approval and Empire State Development completed its review.

Wright has his share of supporters as well as critics.

The person who purchased and donated the Carlton Avenue building to the Co-Op has been in full support of the project, but said she felt Wright needs to be held accountable.

Wright said in a WGRZ television interview that he is appealing to the IRS for reinstatement of his not for profit status and has hired a permanent bookkeeper and certified public accountant.

"This is Buffalo and I know everyone has a strong opinion, but for every critic there are 10 others who back our vision and I appreciate the outpouring of support I have received ,” he told the station. “Our work moves forward; Construction on 238 Carlton begins in May, work on the Niagara Falls store is ongoing and is slated to reopen in June. Throughout this situation we never lost focus on our core mission of providing access to healthy quality food to a community that has traditionally been under served and overlooked," Wright said.

RACISM AT THE VA?

In 2021 a group of 20 current and former workers decided to take a stand after attempting, and unsuccessfully, resolving the issues locally through leadership and other chains of command. Instead they were accused of and dismissed for simply being disgruntled employees. The employees then submitted a well-crafted letter of complaint to the Secretary of Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington D.C. asking them to review their EEO Claims. Hundreds of claims, they say, had been filed previously only to be met with inaction and even worse, retaliation. They also outlined six areas of change they believed critical to addressing the issues including: Increasing Black representation among senior leadership and throughout VA system ; Acknowledging and taking immediate, direct action to address the VA’s Toxic culture of exclusion and racial discrimination; Dismantling the visible and invisible barriers to career advancement for Black employees; Making implicit bias training and cultural sensitivity education mandatory for all staff; and resolving pending EEO cases of racial discrimination.

In response to the allegations and formal complaints made by Black employees of the WNY VA, the Veteran Affairs office in DC told The Challenger in a written statement that “There is no place for discrimination of any kind at VA, and we take all allegations of wrongdoing very seriously and investigate them thoroughly.”

The statement went on to say that the signers of the letter “were provided completed investigations” and while “none of the individual complaints filed by those who signed the letter resulted in a finding of discrimination, the Buffalo VAMC leadership team has taken a number of steps to address the concerns outlined in the letter.” Among those steps, thirteen separate EEO initiatives have been undertaken; a Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council has been established; and a new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Certification training program is in the process of being created.”

Touting the VAMC’s “diverse workforce” the statement concluded “While we have made progress toward addressing these concerns, there is still work to do – and we at VA will continue our efforts to make the Buffalo VAMC the welcoming, respectful, and as diverse place that Veterans and VA employees deserve.”

-No Satisfaction-

Although they must remain anonymous due to legal proceedings, the employees (some of whom are also Veterans), continue to stand together to defend not only themselves but to be the voice for an even larger number of fellow Black employees who fear that speaking out would cost them the jobs they so desperately need to provide for their families. They say there have even been reports where White employees have witnessed these travesties in the workplace and complained to leadership as well.

The "welcoming, respectful" place they contend, does not exist. Nothing appears to have been done and more gets swept under the “old-boy hush” rug ; defying the VA’s pledge to treat all persons with dignity, honesty and respect.

It should also be noted that they have spoken out against the long time problem of biased treatment of Black Veterans who seek care at the local VA as well. VA Press Secretary Terrence Hayes, (who is a Black Army veteran) acknowledged in a 2022 CNN report that” Black veterans have historically been wrongly denied access to VA care or benefits due to racism.” The article addressed the issue and pending lawsuits so it’s no surprise that Black employees of the VA here, many who are veterans themselves, are treated the same and in some instances worse.

-Do the Right Thing-

Sharon Shelton a former Vice Chair for SEIU local 200 and African American Special Emphasis Program Manager shared her thoughts on the claim and her own personal experience with discrimination while working at the VA.

“ After 30 years of employment I retired 9/30/2022. In my tenure I have seen countless African American employees who have faced discrimination. We worked tirelessly with management

Black Inventors and Their Inventions

The following list does not begin to scratch the surface. Here are just a few of the inventions African Americans are responsible for.

•The Traffic Signal, Garrett Morgan (1877-1963)

Garrett Morgan, the first person to own a car in Cleveland, Ohio, invented the three light traffic signal, which he patented in 1922. It was the first to offer a third “caution” signal, which we now know as the yellow light. And in 1912, Morgan received a patent for his “Breathing Device,” which was one of the earliest versions of a gas mask. He called it a safety hood after noticing how many firefighters were killed by smoke on the job. The hood, which went over the head, featured tubes connected to wet sponges that filtered out smoke and provided fresh oxygen.

•Automatic Elevator Doors, Alexander Miles (1838-1918)

Before Alexander Miles’s elevator design, elevators were operated manually; people had to physically open and close the doors of both the elevator and the shaft every time. In 1887, he obtained the patent for his invention, including a flexible belt attached to the elevator cage, allowing the doors to function automatically. He was inducted into the National In-

HEALTH MATTERS

Being Healthy, Happy And Whole Is Your Birthright!

It’s been my experience that one of the primary keys to success is to embrace the opposite. What does that mean?

Observe what everyone else is doing and do the opposite. Be willing to be criticized or misunderstood for doing things differently. Be a rebel with a worthy cause.

•84.4% of American adults eat breakfast on a given day

•90.4% of Americans spend more time watching TV than reading a book

•75% of Americans experienced moderate to high stress levels in the past month

•88% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy

The average American eats breakfast, spends more time watching TV than reading books, and is chronically stressed and unhealthy. But we can embrace the opposite! We can decide to do things and experience life differently than the average American. We can:

•Skip breakfast (FAST)

•Choose gratitude

•Devote more time to reading

•Eliminate and manage our stressors

•Drink more water •Eat a salad every day

These are just a few ways we can begin to embrace the opposite. Take some time this week and observe life around you. What is everyone thinking and doing? Is it working? If not, embrace the opposite.

Being healthy, happy and whole is your birthright! You don’t have to live life sick, depressed, stressed or unhappy.

Don’t misunderstand me. Life is going to happen to us all. We are going to experience pain, sorrow, sadness, loss, and crisis. BUT! If we embrace the opposite, we choose to take full control of the aspects of our life we are directly responsible for, the rest we place in God’s hands.

Embrace the opposite. You’ll be in good company!

Formal Artist Talk with the Fokus’d Kreatives at 6:30p.m.

Buffalo Arts Studio presents Tales from the Porch Extensions, an exhibition of new work by Fokus’d Kreatives, a group of five emerging artists with multi-media artist Aitina Fareed-Cooke.

Fareed-Cooke developed the Tales from the Porch project in 2019 under Get Fokus’d Productions as an op-

portunity to amplify the stories and the voices of members of the Buffalo, NY community. In 2022 the Tales from the Porch project focused on seven Black community leaders positively impacting the city despite the pandemic and the tragedy that occurred at the Tops Market on May 14, 2022.

In partnership with Buffalo Arts Studio and with funding support from Creatives Rebuild New York’s Artist Employment Program through Arts Services Inc.’s fiscal sponsorship, Fareed-Cooke extended Tales from the Porch in order to invest in the next generation of creatives. Fareed-Cooke developed a creative arts apprenticeship called Fokus’d Kreatives as an opportunity to support emerging artists as they develop their artistic craft within the creative arts field.

Over the course of 6 months, Fareed-Cooke guided the current cohort of five Fokus’d Kreatives as they responded to the 2022 Tales from the Porch project. Emerging artists Isaac Fareed, Stephen Forman Jr., Tallulah Gordon, Kaitlyn Lowe, and Mykiss Washington were also given paid opportunities to add to their resumes and support their art production. The end result is Tales from the Porch Extensions, an exhibition of new work in a range of media including photography, film, video productions, sound engineering, illustration, and poetry/creative writing.

Fareed-Cooke has spent close to 20 years providing creative arts strategies for nonprofit organizations, government entities, corporations, educators, and emerging artists. Buffalo Body Building Champs!

Winners Roland Kerr And Justin Mitchell Of Buffalo, Both First Time Amateur Competitors, Plan To Compete At Nationals

The 2023 Mr. & Mrs. Buffalo Body Building, Figure, and Bikini Championships took place Saturday April 8 at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. Roland Kerr, of Buffalo, won the Overall Men’s Physique and Class C Championship. Justin Mitchell, also of Buffalo, won the Class D Championship. Both were first time amateur competitors, and both became NPC Nationally Qualified in their first show. The National Physique Committee (NPC) is the largest amateur bodybuilding organization in the United States. Amateur bodybuilders compete in competitions from local to national competitions sanctioned by the NPC.

They were both under the coaching and instruction of Michael Norwood “MN Fitness,” who is an IFBB Pro (International Federation of body builders) and current men’s physique competitor. This was also Coach Norwood’s first time having two athletes in a competition.

Roland and Justin plan to go on to compete at the nationals so they can earn their Pro Cards to become IFBB Men’s Physique Pros like Coach Norwood, which would make them eligible to compete in the biggest body building stage in the world, Mr. Olympia.

These talented young men are not without gratitude. Roland would like to thank God and his mom, who prepared his meals. Also Coach Norwood for implementing a plan that allowed him to succeed. Justin, who is a Buffalo fire fighter, would also like to thank Coach Norwood for taking him in with only five weeks to prep for the show, and with his vigorous work schedule, giving him the encouragement and guidance through the process.

Congratulations Gentlemen! -Shola

Quentin Suttles' Conviction Overturned

For 21 months Quentin Suttles has been in various New York State Penitentiaries. Like many young Black men, Quentin has been targeted unfairly by the Buffalo Police on multiple occasions and prosecuted unjustly by the Erie County District Attorney's Office, under the leadership of DA John Flynn.

Quentin is more famously known for the video recorded by his girlfriend, Amber, on May 10 2020, just weeks before the brutal slaying of George Floyd. Quentin was at a traffic stop and brutally beaten by officers Michael Scheu and Ronald Ammerman of the Buffalo Police Department, E-district at the time. During the stop Quentin was asked to exit the vehicle. He complied and was searched. The officer reached inside the front of Quentin’s pants, grabbed his genitalia and asked, "is this you?" three times prior to slamming him to the ground. While on the ground, the officers proceeded to punch Quentin in the face and throughout his body, asserting he had put something in his mouth, although nothing was recovered. Ultimately Quentin was treated for a broken scapula, collar bone and eye socket as a result of the traffic stop. All injuries that continue to plague him to this day.

District Attorney Flynn recused himself and his office from the investigation to file charges against Officers Scheu and Ammer man, stating an internal conflict of interest. A special prosecutor was assigned, the Monroe County (Rochester area) District Attorney, and no charges were filed against the officers, who are still active on the force today.

Quentin wasn't in jail for this traffic stop though, all charges from his interaction that day have been dismissed, as "The People" could not meet their burden of proof. He was sentenced to four years in prison and five years of parole for possession of an illegal gun. The gun, however, did not belong to Quentin and the search was unlawful. Quentin was riding in someone else's car when it was pulled over. He was forced out and searched. During the search a firearm was discovered inside the vehicle and Quentin was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm. At the advice of his local attorney, Quentin plead guilty for a lighter sentence and received state prison time. He was initially facing 15 years. While he was in jail, his girlfriend Amber went to work trying to figure out how to get justice for her boyfriend.

She called countless local attorneys and described to them the nature of Quentin's arrest and the unlawful search that was conducted that day. Like so many, regardless of the blatant violations of Quentin's rights, no local attorneys were willing to take his case and take on the DAs office. Amber set her search to Brooklyn where she found The Law Offices of Jonathan Rosenberg. An appeal was filed with the courts. Quentin's conviction was overturned and he was released from jail on March 31, 2023 after serving 21 months of his four year sentence. Today Quentin is at home, still dealing with the traumas and physical ailments of his brutal assault at the hands of Buffalo Police, and working to get his life back on track with his children, after his unjust prosecution at the hands of the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

Why is it that people like Quentin Suttles and Deyanna Davis, the woman who accidently struck a state trooper with her vehicle the evening of the protest for Suttles, can be harshly prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, while the white man responsible for the death of Tyler Lewis, in what DA Flynn described as "a drug deal gone wrong," can walk away without facing trial?

“QUOTE OF THE WEEK"

It’s like when you go to the dentist, and the man’s going to take your tooth. You’re going to fight him when he starts pulling. So he squirts some stuff in your jaw called Novocaine, to make you think they’re not doing anything to you. So you sit there and ’cause you’ve got all of that Novocaine in your jaw, you suffer peacefully. Blood running all down your jaw, and you don’t know what’s happening. ’Cause someone has taught you to suffer – peacefully.”

having several meetings and conversations, we saw very little improvement. “

She said the letter was sent to Washington by employees who felt their grievances fell on deaf ears. She noted that a representative did come and meet with them and took information back to Washington.

“To my knowledge they have not received any updates. We never got an official response or a copy of the report.”

Recalling her own personal experience having to fight discrimination to get her position she concluded, “My hope is that the information shared will give some insight on what we face as African American employees and to hold people accountable.”

“We look forward to President Biden’s promise to Black America in addressing discrimination and harassment in the workplace,” the Black employees said in their letter to the Secretary of Department of Veterans Affairs. “President Biden states one of his primary missions is to end harassment by enhancing accountability and rejecting discrimination. As VAWNYHS Black employees we welcome the implementation of that mission.”

Reflections on This Broken World, Nation and City We Live In

The world we live in, is in chaos.

In Paris, France, they are protesting, quite violently, the proposal to raise the age of retirement from 62 to 64 years of age.

In Nashville, TN., the city where three 9 year old children and their teacher and school staff were murdered in a school shooting and the Republican-controlled state legislature voted to expel the two Black legislators but voted to keep the lone White woman legislator, who protested with them for gun reform, showing racism in all its ugliness. And when one looks at the hair of the two young Black men, one did not see the seemingly 'safe' hairdos that White men are used to seeing on Black men, especially those Black men who hold elected offices in the south. One 'brother', Representative Justin Jones of Knoxville, TN. was sporting a long, straight ponytail while his fellow impeached colleague, Representative Justin J. Pearson of Memphis, had an Afro that made him look like one the young, Black conscious men of the 1970s! Expelled, these former state Legislators are now known and celebrated all over the world for taking a stand for reasonable gun reform and against political racism and bigotry.

And in Israel, where the Jews and Palestinians are at one anothers throat again, it is reinforcing the notion that someone, and not that infamous ' bull', has run amok in the China Shop!

Right now, here in Buffalo, NY, we have three African Americans in the fight of their lives, not only for their jobs but for their integrity and humanity as well. These young and courageous individuals, two who are active police officers and one, a mental health clinician, were humiliated, harassed and subjected to racist remarks, stereotyping and mental abuse by one of their supervising officers.

These heroes are police officers Brandan Frazier and Katelynn Bolden and mental health clinician, Erica Seymour. As they stood in solidarity with their cases, they also in essence stood with all those Black police officers present and in the future, who may be subjected to the same biased language and/ or actions by their supervisors or colleagues with racist motivations.

In the midst of tremendous community support, Buffalo's many prominent civil rights organizations and their leaders have been absolutely silent regarding speaking up for or giving these young people moral support, advice and guidance. I am disappointed that the unbossed and unbought leadership and community engagement that came from leaders such as W.E.B. DuBois, Walter White, Daniel Acker, Rufus Frazier, Ben Jealous and Frank Mesiah are missing in our people, our dear city and in our community.

On Saturday, April 15 from 4-8 p.m., this writer and We Are Women Warriors are asking the community to join us at a benefit gathering for the three young persons who have filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Buffalo Police Department. The event will take place in the meeting room, 2nd Floor, at the Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium Complex, 1100 Jefferson Ave, Ticket donation is $30.

365 Days A Year.

Let us support these young persons because, who knows? The next time it might be you or one of your friends or relatives who may need the community's love and support.Topurchase a ticket, please call Betty Jean Grant @ 716-602-5877, Lisa Wilson, 716-602-4438. Or you may come to the Stadium Complex and donate at the door.

Drew discovered a method of separating red blood cells from plasma and then storing the two components separately. This new process allowed blood to be stored for more than a week, which was the maximum at that time. Drew documented these findings in a paper that led to the first blood bank.
