AREA BRIEFS Humbled, Appreciative and Surprised! Mrs. Allie Freeman, pictured right, proudly displays a plaque honoring her late husband, Dr. James Freeman, M.D., Ph.D., the first Black to graduate from the University of New York at Buffalo with both an M.D. and Ph.D. in 1974. According to Mrs. Freeman, her sons, James and Pat Freeman, while attending a home going service at Howard University, decided to visit the Department of Biology where their dad, Dr. James J. Freeman, taught. They spoke with a professor who remembered their dad. Howard University was celebrating its 150th year at the time. The university recognized Dr. Freeman and his academic work, and as a result, the school asked my sons to give me the plaque that was presented in his memory. We were totally humbled, appreciative and surprised!

CNN Political Analyst to Keynote CAO’s 52nd Anniversary Dinner and Awards Celebration The Board of Directors of the Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. is proud to present its 52nd Anniversary Awards Dinner and Celebration on Friday, June 9 from 6 - 9 p.m at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Changing Our Direction, Creating a New Future” and will include a recognition ceremony for this year’s outstanding community service leaders, partners and corporate citizens of the agency. Dr. Rev. James A. Lewis, III of Miracle Missions Baptist Church returns as Master of Ceremonies. Keynonte speaker Bakari Sellers, a prominent CNN political analyst, made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina State Legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation. In 2014, Sellers won the Democratic Bakari Sellers nomination for Lt. Governor and is widely considered to be a rising star within the Democratic Party and leading voice for his generation. Sellers, who is also a practicing attorney, earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and his law degree from the University of South Carolina. He has followed in the footsteps of his father, civil rights leader Dr. Cleveland Sellers, in his tireless commitment to public service while championing progressive policies. In addition to his impressive list of early accomplishments, Sellers served on President Barack Obama’s South Carolina steering committee during the 2008 election. As one of the largest, private, not-for-profit agencies in Western New York, the upcoming event commemorates 52 years of focused and dedicated efforts in promoting self-sufficiency through advocacy, partnerships and services. The CAO serves over 34,000 low-income residents annually through a network of more than 50 locations across Erie and Niagara counties, providing essential services to individuals and families in need as they move towards self-sufficiency. Tickets are just $50 per person, $500 per table of ten. A limited number of tickets to the VIP Reception and Meet & Greet with Bakari Sellers are just $75. For sponsorship information, or to purchase an ad in the souvenir journal, contact Keri Socker, Administrative Coordinator at 881-5150. Tickets are available online at www.caoec.org.
2017 Season: Ed Parson Sunday Morning Softball League Recruiting By Renata Toney
The Ed Parson, Sr. Sunday Morning Memorial Softball League is now recruiting teams for its 58th season that kicks off Sunday, May 22, 11 a.m. at the field named in his honor on Fillmore Avenue between East Delavan and Kensington Avenues. “Our league has always had a philosophy of inclusion; we welcome players of all athletic abilities, genders and experience levels,” said newly appointed Commissioner Demetrius Richards. “We would love to see more bar owners, healthcare workers, Buffalo firefighters and police officers, corrections officers, City of Buffalo and Erie County staff. Everyone is welcome.” Teams are required to have between 12 – 20 members and the cost is $500 per team. This is a 10-team league and already nearly eight teams have confirmed their intent to play. If you don’t have enough people to make a team you can add your name to the “individuals” list. The only equipment required is bats. The league provides softballs and most teams have enough bats to share. Most teams get sponsors to buy shirts as well. All games have umpires which is $20 per team per game. The City Of Buffalo recently doubled the price for people to play in softball leagues at the city parks. “We’re looking for sponsors to help offset operation fees and to present the annual end of season picnic,“ said deputy commissioner Sonya Fields. “We also welcome donations to help sustain the legacy of the league.” Deadline for team registration is Sunday, May 7. If you’re interested in coming aboard as a team, sponsor or supporting us with a donation, please contact us at (716) 308-1899 or edparsonsoftball@yahoo.com or drich342@yahoo.com. ˆ
Before There Was a Jackie Robinson There Was Moses Walker...
Moses Fleetwood Walker
Baseball has been considered by many to be America’s past time but not all people in America were allowed to partake in the game on equal grounds. Modern Baseball has been around since 1845. The game has been played on the continent since the late 1700s in various forms that seem alien to us today. However, the concept of segregated leagues did not begin until 1885 after the infamous Anson-Walker incident of 1884. Before there was Jackie Robinson in 1947, there was Moses Fleetwood Walker, who was the only Black player on an all White team in the 1880s. According to MLB. com, on July 20, 1884, Anson’s National League Chicago White Sox were to play an exhibition against Toledo of the American Association. Toledo had one Black player, Walker, who played catcher. Chicago let it be known ahead of time that Anson would not play on the same field with Black ballplayers. However, with the support of the Toledo team, Walker played anyway, despite Anson’s objections. After the incident, many racist “gentlemen ballers” came to Anson’s side and Black players were forced out of the minor leagues.

Italy rescues 2,000 migrants from the Mediterranean Sea
Cleveland Video Killing Started With One Tragedy, Ended With Another
Italian rescue ships rescued some 2,000 migrants from unseaworthy smugglers’ boats off the coast of Libya last weekend, with hundreds of them arriving last Saturday in southern Italian ports. One rescue ship brought 504 migrants and one corpse to Pozzallo, Sicily, and another boat brought about 500 other migrants to Augusta, Sicily. In all, Italy’s coast guard coordinated about 20 separate rescues on Friday. So far this year, some 29,000 migrants, most of them fleeing poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, have arrived in Italy after being rescued by European military ships or private charity organizations.
Accused killer Steve Stephens, who sparked a nationwide man hunt after posting a Facebook video in which he randomly shot and killed an elderly man in Cleveland on Easter Sunday, has killed himself in Erie, Pa., state police report. According to NBC Philadelphia, Stephens was spotted by Pennsylvania State Police troopers Tuesday morning and fatally shot himself as he was being pursued. The FBI and U.S. marshals began a nationwide search for the suspect, receiving more than 400 tips claiming that Stephens had been spotted everywhere from Pennsylvania to Texas. “This started with one tragedy and ended with another person taking their own life,” said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams. “We would have liked to have brought Steve in peacefully …” Stephens, a 37-year-old job counselor who worked with teenagers and young people, was wanted on murder charges in the killing of Robert Godwin Sr., 74, a former foundry worker and father of 10 who was picking up aluminum cans on Sunday when he was shot. The chilling video was on Facebook for three hours before it was taken down. It was just the latest instance of crime footage being shared on social media.

Study: Greatest rise in heroin use was among white males (CNN) — The numbers are startling -- in 2015, 52,404 people died from drug overdoses according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sixty-three percent of those deaths involved an opioid. More people die from drug overdoses than from guns or car accidents. At the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1995, 43,115 people in the United States died from the disease. 25% of all overdoses are from heroin Furthermore, since 1999, the number of overdoses from prescription opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as illicit drugs like heroin, have quadrupled. In fact, heroin now accounts for one in four overdose deaths in the United States. Since 2001, the number of people who have used heroin has increased almost five-fold, and the number of people who abuse heroin has approximately tripled. The greatest increases in use occurred among White males.

From Genesis to Revelation there is a great deal of proof that Blacks are present throughout the Bible: •The Garden of Eden was described in Genesis as having been near a four-river system in the region of the lands of Cush, Havilah, and Asshur, which today would be near the borders of Eastern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. •Many of the Hebrew patriarchs married or had children with women from African tribes. Abraham had children with Hagar and Keturah both from African (Hamitic) tribes. Moses married Zippora, who was Ethiopian. Jacob had children with two handmaidens from African tribes, and these children became the patriarchs of two tribes of Israel. (Source: Onleilove Alston, | Faith in Action Series. The Amazing Robert Glasper Experiment: ‘Expect to Hear Something You’ve Never Heard Before’
F
or over a decade that includes four albums and two Grammy awards (a Best R&B album win with 2013's landmark “Black Radio”), The Robert Glasper Experiment-comprised of Glasper (Fender Rhodes, piano), Casey Benjamin (saxophone/ vocoder), DerrickHodge (bass) and Mark Colenburg (drums)- has helped launch an artistic and commercial revitalization of that most fertile and diverse of American musical traditions: jazz. Opening the door for the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Gregory Porter and Kamasi Washington, the quartet will be bringing their genre-blending and innovative grooves to Buffalo State's Performing Arts Center, this Thursday April 20. Born in Houston, the 39 year old Glasper, a prolific musician known as a jazz and R&B renaissance man, credits his mother ( a church and club singer) as his earliest musical influence. Glasper's genremelding tendencies first blossomed in the church.
mon, Jay-Z and Meshell Ndegeocello among others. Glasper released his debut “Mood” in 2004 which was followed by 2005's “Canvas,” 2006's “In My Element” and 2009's “Double Booked,” respectively. Yet it was the acclaimed 2012's “Black Radio” and its sequel “Black Radio 2” that proved to be watersheds fusing hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul and rock, into an organic musical aesthetic devoid of boundaries in the finest of the African American (read jazz) tradition. “We learn from the streets and also in the schools,” says Glasper of the Experiment's creative dynamic. “Everyone has common musical homes. We all love R&B, hip-hop and jazz and some of us have more classical influences as well and some of us have more rock influences. It really is a nice colorful balance. “
“I saw him and was like: 'wow, a young African-American cat playing jazz wearing Timberlands and overalls. That was my first time knowing that I could do that. It opened up my eyes and I think I've just come into my own thing through the years being influenced by some of these people: Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargovepeople who were not scared of genre-hopping and adding new things to the music.”
“The experiment is really unique in how it started,” explains Casey Benjamin. “We're all trained jazz musicians and we've always had the ability to play any other type of music. There's a lot of musicians that say 'I play everything' but really authentically playing every popular style of music, and that's what made this band unique. It was unpretentious and all organic. I always say that skilled jazz musicians make the best musicians (maybe I'm biased). If you look at a lot of your favorite artists: Motown records have all jazz musicians; Michael Jackson records have jazz musicians: even the Rolling Stones have jazz musicians in their band, so it's always an extension. So that's what I believe makes the experiment so unique, it's because we're all able to tap into all different styles of music and we're all great writers and producers and all of that happens onstage.”
Glasper would begin performing with Bilal after meeting the neo-soul singer at New York's New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and concurrent with Glasper's rise in the jazz scene he's worked with the likes of Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Com-
Besides releasing the critically acclaimed “ArtScience” with the Experiment, 2016 also saw Glasper score Don Cheadle's Miles Davis bio-pic “Miles Ahead” as well as the unique project “Everything Is Beautiful” which took the Prince Of Darkness into the
“I was playing in church when I was 12 years old and then around that same time I was trying to play R&B songs, “ he explains over the phone. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's (whom Glasper would later tour with) appearance at Houston's High School For The Performing and Visual Arts was especially pivotal in his musical development.

21st century by blending master takes and out-takes with a host of guest artists. “I learned that I was influenced by Miles more than I knew,” Glalsper says. “When I started doing the ‘Everything Is Beautiful’ project that really opened up my eyes since I had access to the whole recording sessions from the vaults, and I heard him talking about and explaining things to the other musicians. Stuff that other people don't get to hear and I realized that we're kind of similar in that he never told other cats in the band what to do. He always had the right cats that already had the right voice... and when he did want something he'd hint around and have them come to it themselves.” Prompted on the makeup of the audiences on this current tour and what fans can expect this Thursday Benjamin says, “They can expect to hear something that they've never heard before” adding, “it's not unusual to come to our shows and see a 19 year old kid sitting next to a 75 year old and they're bopping their heads the same way.”
see you at the
events!
“Every show is a different show,” says Glasper. “We always base the show off the audience and tailor it to what they need.”

To See Or Not To See… Awareness Offers The Greater Good By SABIRAH MUHAMMAD old Steve Stephens ended when he reportedly shot himself to death in Erie, PA. Stephens was the suspect who randomly shot and killed 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. who was walking along a Cleveland-area sidewalk on Sunday ,before posting a video of the fatal shooting on Facebook. At one point the hunt for the killer broadened nationwide and a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest was announced.)
O
Steve Stephens (leflt) and Robert Godwin Sr.
n Sunday, April 16th, the modern-day village square (social media) was teeming with the shock, and rage and pain in Black America over the killing of our elder, Robert Godwin in Cleveland, Ohio by the now infamous Steve Stevens, who taped the deed live. Reactions to the posting of that video were visceral, with many asking the social media family not to post it, or to take it down. Some watched it and offered their reactions, which produced lively and emotional debates all through the night. Some admitted to scrolling right past it. It takes courage to endure the full-frontal view of the perils of Black life in a world that despises it. Sometimes, we struggle to find a reason to. Ultimately, many of us simply decide - not to. We will not see. We will not endure yet another demonstration of utter contempt for and destruction of our lives, especially when opting out is as simple as a glide across a mouse pad. For those of us who dare to look into the abyss, normal human reactions to trauma that were scabbed over by habituation...by the seemingly mundane continuance of our perpetual slaughter... can be restimulated. This killing was one such event. There’s something about the savaging of the vulnerable among us that strikes a deeper cord; and rightfully so. Even our scriptures make special mention of the care that should be given to the orphan and the way farer, the young, the old, the infirm and the female, and sets a standard for noble behavior based on our treatment of these. As much as Black folk have lost of ourselves in the ongoing Maafa, our genetic memory retains the knowing that our elders are to be honored, revered, sought out for counsel, counted among the community’s treasures, and should never, ever fear harm from the hands of our own children. Something in our souls needed no words to describe the desecration of a principle imprinted in our DNA, and repeated to us often by our Great Grandmothers: Chile, don’t never forget the bridge... that carried you over safe. Who among us didn’t see our own Grandfather in the face of Robert Godwin? Who among us didn’t wonder what he must have survived in America for 74 years bearing the burden of our yesterdays, and think he deserved better? So, here we are. We’re in our corners. The only thing we all seem to agree on is that if Stephens had been wearing Tom Brady’s jersey in an underground cave in Mexico, he would have been found within hours. After that, it’s treacherous out here. Some of us are grieving over the explicit cries for help that Steve Stephens sent out, and insist that we remember his pain. Most of us retort that his pain doesn’t matter, because he took something sacred that he didn’t give, and can never return. Some feel that viewing the video is disrespectful to the victim and the family, and some believe it’s our absolute duty to watch it, and make our world better because of it. Some have lashed out at Stephens’ mother and former girlfriend for not calling him as he asked, and some take umbrage at the mere suggestion that they should be blamed for his actions. Some press the issue of our responsibility as a community to respond judiciously to those of us in crisis, and others maintain that we all deal with crisis... handle your business without killing somebody. Who’s right? We all are. There are men in our besieged family who have been shot themselves, who don’t want to re-visit that experience. Leave them be. There are legions of abused women in our family who also wouldn’t have called Stephens. Don’t put them on the visitor’s list if he makes it to a jail cell. If you can stand to take the video into your experience and let it fuel your efforts at solutions, have at it. If you’re able to see the fear and desperation behind the mask of violence and embrace the offender, God bless you. Our task now is two-fold. Be aware of the natural response of turning on each other in the powerless condition we’re in. Don’t do that. Next, find a way to take back our power. Somewhere in that same DNA that compels us (in our right minds) to respect our elders, is the blueprint for an independent, self-sufficient community within borders that we create and secure for ourselves. We don’t have jobless folk in that community! Our unemployed children have grown Hip Hop into a yearly ten billion dollar business. There’s a Black man charging fees to stand in line for people who want the latest iphone, and is earning enough to hire a team to stand as well. Black folk don’t just do more with less. We do more with nothing. A sound economic base can provide us the luxury of tending to our mental health...can save our mental health. The elimination of basic need will stop fratricide, domestic violence, drug abuse, killer stress, and every malady being inflicted on us by the one who throws the rock... and hides the hand. Kwame Toure would say “Organize, organize, organize.” Get still an ask yourself what you should be doing in this hour. Grab hold of whatever portion of this mess is yours, and let’s make it into a miracle. We won’t get out of this predicament by burying our heads in the sand. But we don’t need to

He moved to Buffalo in 1958,” he continued. “A member of True Bethel Baptist Church, he helped many people. He was caring, selfless and dedicated. He will be greatly missed!”
