INSIDE ROCHESTER

Ebony Dukes To Run For Monroe County Legislature Seat

E

bony Dukes is running as a Democratic candidate for the Monroe County Legislature to represent the 27th District which includes Rochester’s 19th Ward neighborhood, Genesee Valley Park and the Greater Rochester International Airport. LaShay Harris previously held the position since 2015, but was recently endorsed as the Democratic candidate for the Rochester City Council’s South District, since the incumbent Adam McFadden ended his bid for reelection. Ebony Dukes Dukes is a native of Monroe County raised in Memorial A.M.E. Zion, the oldest African-American church in Rochester and Monroe County which played a pivotal role in the history of Rochester, NY. She was previously appointed as a Democratic Committee member in 2016 and has worked for the betterment of Rochester throughout her life. Prior to joining the Democratic Committee, she worked to establish the Daughters of Royalty (DOR) youth mentoring program, was Director of Champion Academy in its inaugural year, an organization created by Rochester Native and NFL Super Bowl Champion Roland Williams which provides at risk teens with support at school, home and the community and she also played an essential role with the City of Rochester ROC The Park Music Festival for several years. After graduating from Rush Henrietta High School, she attended Canisius College, where she studied Biopsychology and went on to earn her Bachelors in Social Work from Keuka College. Dukes currently is employed with Person Centered Services based in Buffalo, N.Y. as a Care Coordinator. The primary elections will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

It’s 2019 NFL Draft Time !

H

ere we go! It’s finally time for “The Process” to put up or shut up on forming a competitive playoff contending football team. The Bills are almost backed into a corner and forced to take left tackle Jawaan Taylor from University of Florida with their selection at number 9 overall. If Jawaan is already selected, then left tackle Jonah Williams will be on my radar as a qualified choice. My out of the box selection in the first round at number nine would be middle linebacker Devin White out of LSU. This would mean moving last year’s first round draft pick Tremaine Edmunds to the outside linebacker position. Tremaine has shown he’s not ready to play the position but is much better suited for the outside linebacker position. This move would give the Bills two top linebackers for at least 5 to 10 years. I’m assuming they will pay them once their rookie contract is nearing expiration. The Bills would then select offensive tackle Kaleb McGary out of University of Washington in second round. If the Bills go with my first option they will pick tight end Irv Smith Jr. out of Alabama in the second round after taking Jawaan Taylor. The biggest problem is the Bills gave away TOO much talent and have many positions to fill. “The Process” has to draft quality starting players who are going to make a difference on the roster. The trading of Cordy Glenn really has set this team backwards for at least two to three years. If Cordy was still on the roster you would not need to draft a stud left tackle. Once again you do not need to strip your team down to the bear minimum. I have the Bills selecting wide receiver Riley Ridley in the third round out of Georgia. He’s a quality receiver who can help Bills QB Josh Allen make a difference in 2019. A good back up for the Bills would be to select former UB standout QB Tyree Jackson but I think he will be picked in the second round. The Bills could also draft former UB standout wide receiver Anthony Johnson. I also expect the Bills to select a defensive end/tackle and possibly through a free agency and most defiinitely among the undrafted free agents which will be invited to rookie, Mini, and summer training camps. What's Going To Happen to Pilgrim Village?

The Pilgrim Village Apartments on Best Street, is an affordable housing complex developed by Judge Wilbur Trammell in 1980. It was recently in the news after it was learned that McGuire Development Co. had seized control of a $200 million project at Pilgrim Village from its former partner, Mark H. Trammell of MHT Holdings. In 2017 crews tore down five buildings in Pilgrim Village in preparation for the first phase of the Campus Square development. Trammell’s ambitious plans for the development called for a new affordable senior unit and market – rate units aimed at graduate students, as the complex sits just north of the booming Medical Campus. A $3 million overhaul of the remaining 65 townhouses was also planned. He had additionally announced that part of the complex retail and commercial space would be designated for housing for the Muhammad School of Music and Miss Barbara’s School of Dance – two iconic arts institutions in the community. But unexpected hurdles, millions of dollars in question, lawsuits, court dates and denials initially led to a split between Trammell and McGuire and ultimately with McGuire taking over the project. 47 of the 66 housing units are still occupied. McGuire is currently seeking how best to redevelop the site and has pledged community involvement in the plans. Trammell’s lawyers say he still hasn’t given up on doing something for the neighborhood.

NATIONAL + WORLD

Min. Abdul Rahman Muhammad, "The Rock Of The South" Nation of Islam members and supporters across the country are flooding social media with messages of grief and condolences over the the passing of Min. Abdul Rahman Muhammad, known as “The Rock of The South.” Min. Muhammad was raised in segregated Atlanta, GA in the 1930s and 40s, and joined the Army in 1950 during the Korean War. After returning to the U.S., in 1955 he heard and accepted the teachings of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad in Atlanta, and traveled to cities such as NYC, Detroit, Los Angeles before moving to NOI headquarters in Chicago in 1958. He rose up the ranks of the FOI from private soldier, part of "the Honor Guard" of Temple #2 responsible for the security of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad as the Messenger traveled the country. The Messenger made Rahman National Investigator of all the Temples, and a buyer for NOI Farms in the South, where he took residence in Miami in 1961 and met and became a mentor and trainer of Muhammad Ali and brought him into the Nation of Islam. During that time racial tension was at an all time high. The Nation of Islam served as a symbol of change for African-Americans during that time. The man to usher the soon to be Muhammad Ali into the Nation of Islam was Minister Abdul Rahman. In 1969 Hon. Elijah Muhammad made Rahman the Minister of Atlanta, GA, responsible for reforming the Black Man in the South and building the empire of the Nation of Islam in the Southern Region where he brought a new Temple, new School, had thousands of Muslims and established Muslim businesses all throughout the South. In 1981, Min. Abdul Rahman joined the Hon. Min. Louis Farrakhan to help successfully rebuild the Nation of Islam and the teachings of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, and he remained steadfast as a Teacher and Reformer of His People. In 2004 Minister Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam honored Bro. Rahman where he made these closing remarks : "I am thankful and proud of the love I received from the Messenger and Min. Farrakhan. When I speak of one, I speak of both. I want people to know I came this way and I wanted to be everything I could in the Nation of Islam. I did everything I was told to do without question. When I’m gone, I want people to know there was a man named Rahman," said the honoree.

Carter Says U.S. “Most Warlike Nation in History”

Former US President Jimmy Carter 94, told his congregation that President Trump had a right to be concerned about China's growing economic strength. Some experts say China could overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2030 if current growth trends continue. The former Democratic president said China was getting ahead of the US because Washington has been at war with other countries for most of its history. Carter—who normalized diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing in 1979—suggested that China’s rapid growth had been facilitated by government investment and helped by peace. “Since 1979, do you know how many times China has been at war with anybody?” Carter asked. “None. And we have stayed at war.” He said the US has only enjoyed 16 years of peace in its 242-year history, making the country “the most warlike nation in the history of the world,” Carter said. This is, he said, because of Washington’s tendency to force other nations to “adopt our American principles.” Carter said that China, in contrast to the US, had made massive economic progress for maintaining peace. “How many miles of high-speed railroad do we have in this country?” he asked. The US has “wasted, I think, $3 trillion” on military spending. “It’s more than you can imagine. China has not wasted a single penny on war, and that’s why they’re ahead of us."

ach moment is fragile and fleeting. The moment of the past cannot be kept, however beautiful. The moment of the present cannot be held, however enjoyable. The moment of the future cannot be caught, however desirable. But the mind is desperate to fix the river in place: Possessed by ideas of the past, preoccupied with images of the future, it overlooks the plain truth of the moment. The one who can dissolve her mind will suddenly discover the Tao at her feet, and clarity at hand.

Actor Filmmaker Addison Henderson Talks About His New Film "G.O.D." Set To Begin Shooting In His Hometown of Buffalo This May

A

ddison Henderson is becoming one Buffalo’s most talked about emerging talents from the east side community, For him the sky has no limit, nor does the potluck of locations the city has to offer, as he prepares to begin shooting his latest film,G.O.D. across Buffalo and WNY in May. The Son of former politician, now writer and motivational speaker Dianna Henderson and Bishop William Henderson, a well known historian and former longtime pastor of the Historical Michigan Street Baptist Church, Addison never fails to find room for his community in the scheme of everything he does. It comes as no surprise that he plans to use Buffalo as a long term hub for his projects because he’s got a lot of Buffalo stories to tell. For the film G.O.D. ,Addison has cast over 25 local actors with 8 principal roles held by African Americans. From his early days as a Co-director of “Forgotten City” and directing “The Experience,” a film he shot in Ghana, West Africa, to a host of web series, short films, commercial specs, documentaries and working closely with Chadwick Boseman on a number of projects, Addison Henderson only knows one way, that being… UP! Both his formal training as an actor and director as well as his life experiences from the streets of Buffalo, to Newark New Jersey, and now L.A. (where he currently resides) shows up in everything he creates. In a recent a Q & A Addison gives us a little history and the scoop on his new film G.O.D. Q. Before we get into the film, how did a football athlete from childhood to college football scholarship ditch the field plays and become interested in making films? A. I have to say the beginning interest in film started with my father. He was a world traveler and would shoot everything on his super 16 camera. On Saturdays he would take me over to the church, pull down the screen put up the projector and tell me all these fascinating and amazing spiritual journeyman stories. Then there was my uncle Jeff who started the American Black Film Festival. I stayed with him during summers and after football training he would take me with him to business meetings… so I had a lot of inspiration and exposure from two very successful strong men growing up.

Q. Did you have a favorite film or recall one that sticks in memory? A. I watched movies on VHS tape over and over and my aunt Liz use to take me to the movies on weekends. The first movie I ever saw at a theatre was Lean on Me and the first movie I ever saw on VHS was The Crying Game… I was just a kid and it was the first time I ever saw Forest Whitaker. His acting ability in that role and the whole story line was amazing and that was sort of my introduction in hearing great stories form a “cinematic standpoint.” Q. What was the turning Addison Henderson point for you that pushed you closer to making a move toward your dream of filmmaking? A. When I came home from playing football at Alfred State, I lost my best friend to gun violence and after that I packed up my car with about $150 in my pocket and drove to stay with my mom’s family in Newark, New Jersey. I enrolled in a 2-year program at HB Studios and everyday would take the train into the city and study acting and directing… It was there during one of the segments that I had to both act and direct myself in a play. That was my Segway into directing and its stuck ever since. Q. The Name of your film is G.O.D. what’s acronym stand for? A. Givers of Death it’s like an apocalyptic Noir film… but there’s a spiritual sense to it. Q. What’s the film about? A. It’s the story of a hit-man ( that I play) trying to find peace during the Apocalypse. A a disease has killed half the population over a 3 year period… including his own family.. he’s almost like a “Kevorkian” hitman .. but you’ll also be witnessing the last few days of his life that he doesn’t know is coming.

Q. Where did the idea come from? A. Sometimes I get ideas from visions and dreams and write them down. When I started writing this film everything that I had previously written fit together perfectly for this project. Q. Did you have to do research for this film? A. I’ve talked to a lot of people from all walks of life, I can’t say I know any hitmen, but I’ve heard lots of grim stories. Q. With your busy schedule how did you have time to write the film? A. I was working on a film 21 Bridges with Chadwick Boseman at the time so I wrote most of it while on the movie on set Q. Why did you bring the production for the film to Buffalo? A. Although the film is apocalyptic, there is a beauty in the architecture here that I don’t see captured in other films the way my mind sees it... I want to shoot movies in Buffalo like Spike Lee shoots in Brooklyn .. I love my city, I know this place... I want the community to know I’m here, doing business here, casting here and using local talent . Even people who are living in L.A. that are from Buffalo will also be part of this project. Q. How Big is the Cast and how long are you planning to shoot? A. It’s an epic indie with roughly 19 or more talking parts. We’ll be Shooting over a 4 week period in the month of May. Q. When will Buffalo Get to see the film? A. We premier the film at Sundance and plan to do something really big here in Buffalo afterwards. Q. Where did you get the money to produce the film? A. I have support and people that believe in me and fundraised through contacts that I have. Some in Hollywood and some support from people right here in Buffalo. Q. What do you want people to walk away with after seeing the film? A. For me more than like winning an award or being lauded by the masses I want people to talk, I want people to challenge themselves. Talk about life, question God, make their own assumptions about why things are the way they are. Q. What’s up next? A. I have two new stories that I’m already working on and many more Buffalo Stories to tell! (You can folow Addison this film project on FB at Night Owl Republic Films)

Youth of All Ages Display Awesome Talent and Skills During Annual Drill & Step Show

T

he annual New York State Drill-A-Rama Drill & Step Show rarely makes the news. But it should. Year after year, throngs of young people and their families and friends pack Kleinhans Music Hall for one of the most unique and exciting displays of young raw talent and creativity showcased in the city. It is also a display of stamina and determination, as evidenced by 9 year old Davion who lost her boot during her team’s routine but kept on going! In recent years dancing has been added to the show, which is proudly sponsored by NICYO and Drill Teams United of WNY. Over 20 teams competed last Wednesday and six dance troups performed. All without incident or trouble; a real credit to our children and to the organizers, their parents and supporting community organizations like the Peacemakers. This year, like all the others, the competition was intense. These kids may look cute, but they don’t play. From grade 3 to college, everyone is in victory mode. And in the end, everyone was a winner in their own right! -ResultsMcKinley High School not only won 1st place in the High School Division, they won Best Dressed, Best Captain and Most Original in the High School Division. They competed against Hutch Tech, Emerson and Tapestry. In the Elementary School Division 1 (3rd- 5th Grade), Buffalo United took First Place, followed by Aloma’s Divas 2nd and Arthur O. Eve School 3rd. King Center Charter also competed. In the Junior Independent Division 1st place went to Junior Gospel Difference. In the Senior Independent Division Royalty took 1st Place. Also competing in that division was Elevation, Se’Metrick Stylz, Senior Gospel Difference and the Senior Crusaders Marching Unit. Junior Best Dressed, Junior Gospel Difference; Jr. Best Captain, Crusaders; Senior Best Dressed, Elevation, Senior Best Captain Elevation; Most Original Elementary, Cobra Crusaders; Most Original Junior, the Junior Gospel Difference; Most Original Senior, Sr. Crusaders; and Most Outstanding, Elevation. The six high energy dance troupes that performed (non-competitive) included B.A.S.E. Dancerettes (Buffalo All-Star Extreme); the Elevating Engineers; B.B.P.D. (Back By Popular Demand), Dynasty All Stars, Virtuous Diamonds and D.D.C. (Devastation Dance Company). Also performing to the delight of the audience was O.M.P - the outstanding young people from the Omega Mentoring Program. Applauding the great job of organizers, iconic Founding Father Marcus Brown said during his awards presentations, "After 40 consecutive Drill-A-Ramas I'm so happy that today all I had to say is 'yes you may' !"

New York State Senator Chris Jacobs recognized Tapestry Charter School 7th grade student Jada Kenner with a proclamation declaring April 5th, 2019 “Jada Kenner Day” in the State of New York’s 60th Senate District. Also present at the ceremony with Senator Jacobs were Jada’s mother Lauren Pratt, Tapestry Charter School Executive Director Eric Klapper, Middle School Principal Lyndsay Lee, representatives from Tapestry’s Board of Directors, and Jada’s teammates and classmates. “Jada Kenner is very gifted athletically and academically, a winning combination of talent and skills that reflect very favorably not only on her, but on her family, school and community,” said Jacobs. “Whether it is as future United States Olympian, or someone who experiences great success in some other personal or professional endeavor, I don’t think this is the last that we will be hearing from this exceptional young woman,” the Senator concluded.

hile we often hear and read about police brutality, housing and employment discrimination, there is simply inadequate media coverage of an equally destructive form of racism….environmental racism. The pollution of air, land and water are all environmental injustices that often shorten the life expectancy of Black people. This lack of attention to environmental racism has social and economic consequences.

Antoine M.

THOMPSON

Black Neighborhoods Contain More Air Pollution One of the biggest tragedies of the Jim Crow era was the decision by federal, state and local governments to place highways directly through the middle of many Black neighborhoods in the U.S. Not only did this decision reduce property values, and destroy many communities, Black residents that currently live near expressways have higher rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Seniors and kids inhaling fumes from the tens of thousands of cars that pass by their home and many idling on the expressway is a fixable problem that requires advocacy from Black civic, faith, business, and political leaders. It is not a surprise that there are so many Black kids having asthma attacks and black seniors on respiratory machines. Equally important, factories and warehouses that pollute the air are more likely to be located in or near Black neighborhoods. Black Neighborhoods are less walkable Whether it’s high crime or violence, sub-standard sidewalks, abandoned lots and eye-sore properties, inadequately linedcross-walks, scarce handicapped access ramps at street corners for wheel chairs or strollers, such environmental barriers shorten the lives of Black residents. Too often, Black kids can’t play in the parks or ride their bikes in their neighborhoods which leads them to have fewer opportunities to burn off youthful energy and calories. In some predominantly Black neighborhoods kids walk in the street because of crumbling sidewalks. The investment by local governments in curbs, sidewalks, street markings, street-lighting, play a direct role in whether Black residents from kids to seniors will walk to the store, library, church, school, or to the subway. This lack of walkability contributes to higher rates of obesity, diabetes and other illnesses in Black neighborhoods. Black Homes More Likely Contain Lead Paint In the 1980s and 1990s there was more public outrage over lead in the homes. It is not that the problem of lead paint has gone away in the U.S., the persons most likely to suffer from lead-poising are low-income Black children. The effects of lead-poisoning contribute to learning deficiencies and disruptive behavior for Black children. According to the Environmental Protection Agencies the black neighborhoods twice as likely to live in homes with lead contamination. Making matters worse, very little funding goes to Black led or run organizations to educate parents and communities to help prevent this problem. Toxic Water is not only a Problem in Flint In the 2016 Presidential Election, the national media focused on the contamination of the water in Flint, Michigan, a city with a population of over 90,000 people. Most people did not pay attention to a report by Reuters that same year which noted over 3,000 communities have lead contamination levels in their water higher than in Flint. There is simply not enough focus on water quality in Black neighborhoods. The health effects of water pollution on children and seniors is quite severe according to

Hate Radio in Buffalo Must No Longer Be Tolerated! Dear City of Buffalo at Large: I am greeting you with a powerful trumpet alert regarding a local radio station, WBEN 930AM and its fiery and unapologetic hate and racial speech directed towards people of color as well as at elected officials (Democrats) and everyone who may be opposed to Donald Trump. I remember as a kid listening to this station, recalling the late great Van Miller call the playby-play for the NBA Buffalo Braves in the mid 70’s and then the Buffalo Bills in the 90’s. What was once a proud radio station has, over time become a center for demonic activity. It appears that “Trump Radio” and all the toxins that come with it has pitched its tent in our own back yard. Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. till 12 midnight, countless anger tantrums, insults and vile comments can be heard with the purpose of inciting hostility and ill will among race gender and activists. I personally called the station on two separate occasions during the month of February after hearing the Sandy Beach & Company talk show, to voice my opinion on what I felt were racist comments (the first time I was hung up on, the second time he became angry to the point of swearing). I left a message with WBEN’s Operations Manager Tim Wenger, but no response. The station’s weekday line-up includes other profane radio personalities including Tom Bauerle and Dave Bellavia and nationally syndicated talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. Each of these hatemongers are in the forefront of the current White supremacist movement across the air waves , using their tv and radio platforms to infect people who are aligned with them. With the rise of hate groups and hate crimes in this country, now is the time to recognize, organize and mobilize. Clergy, elected officials, activist groups and concerned citizens – there’s a dumpster fire at WBEN Radio in Buffalo that can no longer be tolerated and must be dealt with immediately! OK Buffalo, now that I have delivered the mail – What’s up? -Kelvin Seay

Candidate for Legislature Says County is Moving CPS and Children Services to “Trump Territory”

District 2 Legislative candidate Duncan Kirkwood released the following statement in reference to the relocation of CPS and Children Services to “Trump Territory.” “Erie County is in the process of moving the entire department of Child Protective Services and Children Services from downtown out to the Appletree Mall (now Business Park) in Cheektowaga. That means when families need to go to the department of Children Services for support from Erie County they can’t just go downtown anymore, they will need to journey nearly 7 miles from the East side out to Cheektowaga. “If there is a need to move the departments to a new building, to save money for an upgraded site, or to part ways with Ellicott Development than they should. However, we need to always keep our community members who need those services in mind. We already have a huge issue with a disproportionate number of Black children being removed from their homes in Erie County. Blacks in Erie County make up 15% of the population, but nearly 50% of all the children removed from their homes are Black children, now this. “This is unacceptable! And as a community we should not allow the people who represent us in the county to disrespect our community like this. What’s worse, is that none of our leaders are talking about this and the impact it will have on our community. Of course there are some really good people in Cheektowaga, but Democrats out number Republicans 3 to 1 in Cheektowaga, and yet both Trump and Sheriff Howard were able to win there. Let us never forget Cynthia Wiggins and how the Galleria Mall didn’t even want buses from the inner city to come onto their property. Most recently, a video of a Cheektowaga hockey team went viral for their loud and outrageous racist taunts of a Black player while the referee and the coaches did nothing. This is the area that Erie County is moving Children Services and Child Protective Services. “This is one of the reasons I am running for Erie County Legislature in District 2, we need someone from our community who will stand up for us and stand up for our families. We can never let something like this happen and we definitely cannot have representatives be silent about it.” ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM congtinued

reports from State Health Departments and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Environmental racism is not a myth, it’s a reality that requires our attention because it is truly a silent killer in many Black neighborhoods. Buffalo native Antoine M. Thompson, is a columnist, and partner with Creative PMO Solutions. Peter P. Vasilion will discuss New York gun laws, including the new "red flag" law, at a meeting of the Dorie Miller Rifle and Pistol Club at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. The new law allows law enforcement, a relative or household member, or a school official to seek a judicial "extreme risk protection order" to have guns taken from someone when there is "probable cause" to believe the person is likely to cause serious harm to himself, herself or others. Gun rights advocates worry about abuses of the law in interpersonal disputes plus the cost and effort needed to have such an order overturned and access to guns restored. Vasilion, who currently represents a man who claims he was manhandled by Amherst police responding to a gun complaint even though he is licensed to carry, also will discuss other guns laws and court cases affecting Second Amendment rights and take audience questions. 2019 Tire Drop-Off Schedule April 20 and May 18 at 197 Broadway between 7:30 a.m. -3 p.m. 4 tires maximum. Must be clean and off rims.
