Mayor Warren Calls on Legislators to Back Zion Hill Baptist Church Vaccine Clinic Key Reform in Policing Zion Hill Baptist Church, in conjunction with Jordan Mayor Lovely Warren wants to see the state law changed so the city can immediately fire police officers for cause; which one of the key reforms of the city's future of policing plan adopted last month calls for. But Rochester's state delegation does not appear to support her. She said she does not understand their hesitation in light of today's modern technology- i.e. cell phones, video and body cams. "We have a completely different set of circumstances," Warren said. "You have the documentation you need to make a determination. You have it right before you." "The law must change to allow us to be able to deal with the times. The Rochester delegation she charged has the political power but must find "the strength" as legislators, to back the change.

Rep Omar Reintroduces Policing Bill Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is reintroducing three policing bills she hopes will end up in the bipartisan package lawmakers have been fine-tuning for weeks as pressure mounts to pass meaningful police reform legislation. The most significant of these bills would establish an independent federal agency to investigate deaths in police custody, officer-involved shootings and use of force that results in severe bodily injury. Meanwhile, incidents of nonlethal use of force are getting more attention, like in a federal civil lawsuit filed against four officers in North Carolina that alleges they grabbed a Black woman by her hair and pulled her out of her SUV during a 2019 traffic stop. In New Jersey, two officers are facing civil rights charges for allegedly assaulting an Arab teenager and then lying about it on a police report.

Brown announced last Thursday that WUFO Radio owner Vision Multi Media Group has been selected as the tenant for 509 Michigan Street, a City-owned site in the heart of Buffalo’s African American Heritage Corridor. A large-scale restoration and expansion project is planned at the site as part of the effort to bring new life to the historic corridor. Vision Multi Media Group owner Sheila Brown bought WUFO in 2013. That purchase made Brown the first Black female owner of both an AM and FM radio station in New York. Vision is currently located in the Corridor, at 143 Broadway. “I am deeply humbled and honored by the news of our selection. As many of you know, Vision Multi Media Group has worked 29 years to get to this moment. But we always knew it was going to happen. ridor Commission for making this dream a reality,” Ms. Brown said. “When asked what makes me successful, I say: dream write and pray. That’s all you have to do. I welcome this new partnership with the City and the Commission. We are on our way. I look forward to many great years of success ahead.” “As Ellicott District Councilmember, 509 Michigan has been a focus of mine for a couple reasons: It’s placement in the historic Michigan Avenue Corridor and its proximity to the first known Archway in the City of Buffalo. This recommendation

is another step toward the continuation of making the Corridor a travel destination in Western New York,”said Council President Darius Pridgen. Buffalo Common Council approval is needed to finalize the lease deal. Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes has been working for many years to jump-start the revitalization of the Corridor. In 2018, she secured $1 million in funds from the Dormitory Authority of New York State for redevelopment of 509 Michigan Street.

Muhumusa and Kaigirwa were feared leaders of the East African Nyabinghi priestesses group that was influential in present day Rwanda and Uganda.

Fearless Black Female Warriors

Muhumusa and Kaigirwa were feared leaders of the East African Nyabingi priestesses group that was influential in Rwanda and Uganda from 1850 to 1950. In 1911 Muhumusa proclaimed “she would drive out the Europeans” and “that the bullets of the Wazungu would turn to water against her.” She organized armed resistance against German colonialists and was eventually detained by the British in Kampala, Uganda, from 1913 to her death in 1945. She became the first in a line of rebel priestesses fighting colonial domination in the name of Nyabingi, and even after being imprisoned she inspired a vast popular following. The British passed its 1912 Witchcraft Act in direct response to the political effectiveness of this spiritually based resistance movement. In August 1917, the “Nyabinga” Kaigirwa followed in Muhumusa’s footsteps, and engineered the Nyakishenyi revolt, with unanimous public support. British officials placed a high price on her head, but no one would claim it. After the British attacked the Congo camp of Kaigirwa Continued Page 11

New CDC Mask Guidelines

The CDC has released new outdoor mask guidance, saying fully vaccinated people can forego face coverings at small outdoor gatherings or when dining outside with friends from multiple households. Unvaccinated people, the CDC says, should still mask up for such events, and even fully vaccinated people should protect themselves in larger, denser outdoor gatherings. President Biden touted the new guidelines as a reason all Americans should get vaccinated.

EAT TO LIVE!

We’re about a month into spring (March 21 - June 20) - a time to restore health, to build new relationships, to express our emotional truths, to expand on current projects and to plant seeds that may one day come to fruition. As winter’s ice breaks up and currents flow the waters of spring nourish new growth. The organs associated with Spring are the liver and gallbladder. The emotion of anger strongly affects the liver, causing stagnation of energy and blood when we hold anger in or express anger too much. The health of the liver is reflected in our eyes and nails. Blurred vision, bloodshot eyes, yellow sclera (the white of the eye), ridged, soft or brittle nails each communicate the liver’s condition. The flavor associated with the liver is sour - a little sour food improves liver functions while too much can damage. The kidney are said to be the mother of the liver. If the liver is over active, it will deplete the kidneys; if the kidneys are deficient, the liver will lack support. Foods That Support the liver: Celery, Cabbage, sauerkraut, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, broccoli sprouts, other sprouts kale, dandelion salad greens, beets, red peppers, carrots onions, garlic, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds almonds, spirulina whole grains, apples, other juicy fruits, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, turmeric powder. Also foods that remove liver stagnation: onions, leeks, garlic, mustard greens, turmeric, basil, bay leaf, cardamon, cumin, fennel, dill ginger, black pepper, horseradish, rosemary, mint, cabbage, broccoli, Foods to avoid, that cause liver stagnation - red meat, cream, cheese, eggs, butter, rich nuts, lard, margarine, most oils - especially Canola oil - ( olive oil in moderation ok), alcohol., all GMO-contaminated vegetables, foods and products made with GMO foods.

Campaign Raises Money for New Mural

Buffalo Bike Tours, Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, and Young Family Team Up to Honor Buffalo’s Original King of Wings!

T

he Young Family, Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, and Buffalo Bike Tours are seeking community support to create a mural to honor the memory of the late John Young,( 1935-1998) owner of Wings N' Things that opened in 1961 and hailed as Buffalo's first chicken wing restaurant by locals and celebrities like Rick James and others. Lina Brown Young carries on the legacy in her father’s memory by preparing his original Mumbo Wing recipe just as he did in the 1960s. Using a commercial kitchen at the Broadway Market, she makes mumbo wings exclusively for Buffalo Bike Tours’ Wing Ride where she even shares a little Mumbo Wing history during each tour. Young's "lip smaking" Mumbo wings were the original Buffalo wing that started it all, predating the Anchor Bar by several years. In 1970, Young closed his business shortly after race riots, and moved to Decatur, IL. Upon returning to Buffalo, he discovered he had been largely omitted from official city narratives, noting, “It hurts me so bad that other people take the credit.” Donations are Needed In effort to raise funds that will enable the family to tell his story through the new mural that will be located at the site of his former restaurant on Jefferson Avenue (on the exterior of the Carl Jeff Barber Shop located at 864 Jefferson), a GoFundMeCampaign has been established where supporters of this well deserved acknowledgement can help at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/mumbowasfirst. The design of the mural will take inspiration from a mural that once stood in John Young’s restaurant painted by the late Bill Cooper and Dalton Easton. Supporters of the project can also help by ordering one of the signature Wing King t-shirts featuring an illustration of John Young by New York Times illustrator Koren Shadmi. With funding from the GoFundMe drive, the group will reclaim John Young’s rightful place in Buffalo history. All funds will be used to commission a remembrance to Buffalo’s pioneering Chicken Wing King. At the time of this article the group had currently raised $1,350 of their $5,000 goal.Remember to make your donation at : https://www.gofundme.com/f/ mumbowasfirst and for the wing king T-shirt more info on future pop ups and wing bike tours go to buffalobiketours. com/mumbo Project is sponsored by Buffalo Bike Tours & The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Moving forward together

in Buffalo

Over the past year, we’ve all been challenged in one way or another by this health crisis — physically, emotionally, financially. And while questions remain about what lies ahead, we know one thing for certain: The only way to move forward is together. To that end, Bank of America remains fully committed to supporting the health and economic recovery of our clients, communities and teammates. We know that small businesses, so critical to our local economy, have been greatly impacted. Through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), to date we’ve delivered 478,731* PPP loans — totaling nearly $34.5 billion* in funding — to help our clients continue to operate and pay their employees. Importantly, more than 99% of those loans went to companies with fewer than 100 employees. Partnering with local nonprofits, we’ve distributed more than 27 million masks for vulnerable populations as part of our ongoing efforts to address health-related disparities accelerated by the coronavirus. We’ve offered new and expanded benefits to help our employees balance family and work, including over 3.7 million days of back-up child and adult care. That’s an investment of more than $370 million in child and adult care reimbursement. I’m so proud of the way our community has come together to help those who need it most. And I’m certain that Buffalo has the power to be stronger than ever as a result.

Helping Buffalo move forward: • Delivered PPP funding to over 1,427 of our small business clients for more than $114 million in relief • Distributed 148,000 masks through our local partners including: – FeedMore WNY – Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo • Expanded benefits for our employees to include additional child and adult care services plus virtual medical and behavioral health consultations at no cost

School Board Member Sounds the Alarm! Parents and Community Must Have Input in How the Board of Education Spends $201 Million Central District School Board member Paulette Woods wants parents and community members to know that a series of meetings are coming up to give them the opportunity to participate in how the city school district can best use $201 million in funding for our children. Board member Woods released the following statement to the community: "The American Rescue Plan Act mandates community participation in reshaping education. Suggested Readings...

"How many of us would say we make adequate time for reading in our lives? Reading can help us clarify our confusion and enhance our perspective. Books and newspapers show us other worlds, other experiences, and unlike television, allow us the time and the silence to absorb and to question. We may not agree to what a writer is saying, but even then we've learned something about ourselves or discovered how to articulate our own thoughts." Eric V. Copage from Black Pearls. This IS What A Sheriff Looks Like...! Kim Beaty and the Race for Sheriff: Buffalo Blacks On A Political Plantation (ED. NOTE: Columnist and former County Legislator, activist Betty Jean Grant , has been on the case from day one. A few months ago, after Kim Beaty was discouraged by the Democratic party chair from running, and dropped out of the race, Grant wrote, “… I have come to the conclusion that the Erie County Democratic Committee is not going to respect Black Democrats as a political force to be reckoned with, until we realize our worth and the power we give to the party here in Erie County. Black Erie County voters vote almost exclusively democrat. But when we Blacks run for a countywide position, we are either discouraged from running or, if we do snag the endorsement, we are not supported financially as much as non-Black candidates” As we know, Ms. Beaty, after an impressive show of community support, re-entered the race. In last week’s Sunday News Beaty revealed to the public at large, the trials she faced during that time, including being told by Democratic Chair Zellner that she's “not what a sheriff looks like.” Zellner said the News article was “offensive and filled with falsehoods.” We know Kimberly Beaty to be an upstanding citizen and public servant whose honorable reputation speaks for itself. )

A

t least every other year there is a major political election in Buffalo or Erie County. Whether the political office is a common council seat in Buffalo or a countywide mad dash to be elected comptroller, clerk or county executive, Buffalo's democratic committee members and voters are actively involved. However, sadly and unfortunately, for the African American community, our participation is not sought or solicited for anything beyond our votes to elect other ethnic groups to these county wide offices. Granted, the Erie County Democratic Committee did endorse Vanessa Glushefski for Kimberly Beaty County Comptroller and Bernie Tolbert for Erie County Sheriff in 2017. But one has to wonder how sincere and committed were those endorsements when neither Ms. Glushefski nor Mr. Tolbert's campaigns were supported or financed as strongly as other non African American candidates have been, in these same past elections. Right now, the Buffalo community is proud that one of its smartest, strongest and most compassionate former police officers, Kimberly Beaty, is running a county wide race for the position of Sheriff of Erie County. The fact that she is a Black female should not be a topic of discussion or a hindrance in her garnering support and getting votes from all parts of Erie County. After all Black people have been voting for White people to be elected to these county offices for just about forever. What we expect now is for those same suburban voters to return that support by voting for one of us when we are qualified and decide to 'dip our toes into the county's political wading pool.' Kimberly Beaty has a resume that can compete and overshadow everyone who is running for Sheriff of Erie County. She has a 34 year career in the Buffalo Police Department as a patrol officer, teacher in the police academy, police chief at E District Police Station and finally as Deputy Police Commissioner. Ms. Beaty is currently employed as Director of Public Safety for Canisius College. Kimberly Beaty is competent enough to run the Sheriff's office but, according to her, the leader of the local Democrats stated that she has the 'wrong look' for a sheriff. Comments like that seem to sound like something Black people might hear during slavery times or at least the Jim Crow era. On Primary Day, June 22nd, please go to the polls and vote for Kimberly Beaty for Erie County Sheriff. Or to make sure your vote counts as soon as it can, Early Voting starts Saturday, June 12, 2021. Kimberly Beaty is what a Sheriff looks like! And she can win!

BLACK HISTORY continued from page 3 in January 1919, killing most of the men, Kaigirwa and the main body of fighters managed to evade the army and escape. However, the British captured the sacred white sheep and burned it to dust before a convocation of leading chiefs. After this deed, a series of disasters afflicted the district commissioner who killed the sheep. His herds were wiped out, his roof caved in and a mysterious fire broke out in his house. Kaigirwa attempted another uprising, then went into the hills, where she was never captured.

Gun Violence Starts at the Top If the state reserves the right to commit mass murder no one should be surprised that the people follow suit.

M

ass shootings happen with appalling regularity in the United States. It is bad enough that recent shootings took place in Atlanta, Boulder, and Indianapolis, but the horror is always followed by the same useless faux debates. Half the population wants to limit gun ownership, the other half doesn’t and continues a gun buying spree to prove their point. Politicians pretend to take action, victims are mourned, thoughts and prayers are uttered, and the cycle repeats itself with the next awful event. Margaret What very few people dare to discuss is how these acts are connected with U.S. history and with the state in its current form. This country exists KIMBERLEY as a result of genocides and terrorism. The indigenous inhabitants were attacked with wars and disease and the survivors were driven from their ancestral lands. Africans were enslaved and treated like chattel, all Black people were deprived of their legal rights, and Jim Crow lasted for 100 years. Lynch law prevailed and the torture and killing of Black people was a spectator sport across the land. The fits and starts of anything resembling justice have been far outweighed by institutional resistance which maintains the status quo. The police continue to kill three people every day, more than 1,000 people every year. While George Floyd’s police murderer was on trial, young Daunte Wright was killed in a nearby community. Video footage revealed that 13-year old Adam Toledo was unarmed with his hands raised when he was shot and killed by Chicago police. Lest anyone forget, Chicago is the city which holds hundreds of people at Homan Square, a city jail that operates like a CIA Black-ops site. Chicago should forever be known as the city where Black men were tortured by police for years. When this nation wasn’t practicing state sanctioned terror within its boundaries, it committed atrocities internationally. Wars, interventions and coups have been committed from Chile to Haiti to Guatemala to Iraq to Ukraine. There are U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and more than 800 bases under U.S. or other NATO nation control around the world. Joe Biden has undone the Trump administration agreement to leave Afghanistan by May 1. He cynically uses the date of September 11 to forestall what should have happened years ago. The occupation of Afghanistan has gone on so long that people born after it began are now old enough to join the military themselves. But no one should be fooled. Biden is privatizing war with contractors and intelligence operatives and moving troops to create havoc elsewhere in the world. If the state reserves the right to commit mass murder no one should be surprised that the people follow suit. They are taught that their violent country is exceptionally good, fair, benevolent and democratic. The U.S. leads the world in military spending and brings wars home by militarizing local police. Of course the bloodletting doesn’t end. It would be shocking if it did. The phony concern must come to an end. Foolish and false platitudes such as, “This is not who we are,” should disappear from discourse and be replaced with honesty. Biden has proposed increasing defense spending to $753 billion and after the rhetorical dust settles, there will be a bipartisan congressional consensus to approve what he wants. Military spending takes up 60% of the discretionary budget and is the reason why people in this country cannot have nice things. State violence is like background music that seeps into the collective consciousness. The same people who express shock when an individual goes on a killing spree in this country are silent when their government is responsible for killings around the world. They may support the mass incarceration state, which makes the U.S. the world’s number one jailer. It is all connected. State sanctioned violence tells the people that individual violence is just fine. The hand wringing over the latest shooting doesn’t mean anything if the wars and law enforcement brutality continue. The hypocrisy is obvious and no one should be surprised when a well-armed population makes use of their personal arsenals. The United States of America is and will remain violent without some revolutionary change. The carnage is both official and personal. If this country is honest the next mass shooting should be ignored by the media, politicians, and by the people too. Any consternation is temporary because it is dishonest. For now, the most that can be expected is that Americans will finally end the pretense of concern and treat the inevitable results of their history and politics with nonchalance. It is the only honest thing they can do. Margaret Kimberley’s Freedom Rider column appears weekly in BAR and is widely reprinted elsewhere. Rise Up Right Highlights In Sports

W

elcome to Rise Up Right, where we give you the best sports news and highlights, and updates taking full circle in the sports world. Thank you for your continued support....and with that being said Let's Rise Up....! NFL News Today is a great day for sports as 32 teams will be looking to brighten their futures by picking up some of the best prospects out of college and drafting them to their respective N F L teams. T h i s N F L draft in my expert analysis will have at least two to three teams that will trade up or down in order to secure the best possibilities for their teams. This NFL draft has a lot of good quarterback prospects along with key defensive players who could be immediate impact players for the right team and system. Here's a look at what my first 10 picks mock draft looks like. 1. Jaguars- Trevor Lawrence QB 2. Jets- Zach Wilson QB 3. 49ers- Trey Lance QB 4. Falcons- Trade Down to #9 with Denver Broncos, Broncos at #4 take Justin Fields QB 5. Bengals- JaMarr Chase WR 6. Dolphins- Kyle Pitts TE 7. Lions- Penei Sewell OT

8. Panthers- Patrick Surtain Jr CB 9. Broncos- Trade Up with Falcons at #4, Falcons at #9 take Najee Harris RB 10. Cowboys- Raeshawn Slater OL To see the rest of my mock draft picks watch Monday Night Madness on Facebook Live and YouTube and Rise Up Unlimited Radio Show on WDAP Radio/Spreaker. com Buffalo Bills News With the #30 pick in the 2021 Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected no one because I really think the Bills will look to move up to grab a best available player, a defensive edge rusher or top cornerback in this draft. The Bills window for a Super Bowl title is now. The most impactful moves will need to be made in order to obtain their greatest potential. A player like Jaycee Horn, Najee Harris, Zaven Collins or Jayson Oweh could be an immediate impact player for the Bills. For more Bills news and updates watch Buffalo Bills Edition of Rise Up Early every Sunday at 10am on Facebook Live and YouTube. Buffalo Sabres News The Buffalo Sabres have played a little bit better under the tutelage of Dan Granato. The offense has produced in the more efficient manner but as Sabres fans know Dan Granato is very big on defense which is something they will look to improve in the offseason. A perfect example of the Sabres offense improving

just look at Rasmus Dahlin who has scored 11 points in the last 13 games. Should Dan Granato remain as head coach of the Sabres? Why Should I Use A Mortgage Broker or Financing Consultant?

G

by Calvin Hollie

enerally, when most people are looking to refinance their home mortgage, purchase investment property or start a business they tum to their local bank. The basic thought is that because I keep my money in XYZ Bank they should be willing to lend me money. After all I have been banking with them for over 10, 20 or even 30 years. While you would think that your bank or credit union would be just as loyal to you as you have been to them, the fact is, in the banking world lending money is a business. And in business you always want to limit your so-called risk and maximize your return. That my friend is the way most banks look at us, how much of a risk you or I will be. Unfortunately, for us African Americans, getting approved for the financing we both need and want is extremely difficult. In fact, according to Investopedia. com, in 2017, banks were twice as likely to provide business loans to White entrepreneurs than their Black counterparts. Conversely, they were also three times as likely to follow up with White applicants than with more qualified Black Business owners. Not to mention the challenges we face when buying a home or re-financing a current mortgage. According to an article published in the Washington Post dated May 23, 2018. In 2017 while overall about 1 of every 9

loan applications (10.8%) to purchase a home - and more than l in 4 applications (26.4%) for a refinance were denied. What's even more alarming is that the overall rate of denials of mortgage applications for Blacks was 18.4 percent in 2017, with 13.5 percent for Hispanics and 10.6 percent for Asians. For non-Hispanic Whites, it was only 8.8 percent. Conventional home purchase loans Black applicants received denial 19.3% of the time, and 39% Black applicants were denied a refinance loan. Which begs the question, "So why should I even try to get a loan?" For the most part most of these denials can be attributed to a couple of factors such as: 1.A weak borrower's profile. 2.Lack of knowledge of the mortgage and financing process. 3.Choosing the wrong type of mortgage product. And that's where a trusted mortgage or financing expert can come in. A mortgage professional can help if you want support sifting through mortgage options, pinpointing the best rates or overcoming unique borrowing challenges. Although you can shop for a mortgage on your own, a mortgage broker acts as a proverbial matchmaker to connect you with the right lender for your financing needs. Before heading to your local bank, here's what you

need to know about working with a mortgage broker or financing professional. Next: Part 2 -Conclusion

he Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. (CHCB) in collaboration with the Buffalo Documentary Project (BDP) and Burchfield Penney premiered Fight For Good, last Thursday, an excellent 22-minute film documenting the center’s efforts to provide continuous care to underserved patients of color in the face of inequity and systemic racism during the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary explores the impact of CHCB physicians; the leadership role of women of color; and the challenges presented by healthcare disparities. The film captures candid, firsthand experiences, personal and organizational challenges in providing treatment, difficulties faced by families, and the impact of racism in the broader healthcare system. Featured in “starring roles” are Dr. LaVonne Ansari, Chief Executive Officer, CHCB, Inc., Dr. Kenyani Davis, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, CHCB, Inc. Dr. Shilpa Kapoor, DDS, MS, BDS, Dental Director, CHCB, Inc.; three amazing women whose dedication and commitment to providing quality health care comes through clearly -- pandemic or no pandemic - as well as their deep, personal understanding of their roles as caregiver to the marginalized community. The excellently produced film is revealing and honest . Dr. Ansari’s humility, her knowledge of history, cultural sensitivity and her universal perspective as a woman of color, coupled with her professionalism, is impressive. A brief panel discussion with audience participation. followed the film and included Buffalo Documentary members Mani Mehrvarz, Founding Director; Maryam Muliaee, Art Director; and SUNY Buffalo State College professor Naila Ansari, film curator/interviewer. The Community Health Center's Karla Thomas hosted the event. Anyone who views this film with an open mind can only walk away enlightened, proud and appreciative of this noble “fight for good.” The film can currently be viewed on WBBZ MeTV on Thursday, April 29th, May 6th and May 13th at 12:30 PM.
