aturday, August 7, would have marked Wardel “Meech'' Davis's 25th birthday. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by Buffalo Police on February 7, 2017, after he was placed in a chokehold and savagely beaten while lying prone (on his chest). The officers involved, Todd McCalister and Nicholas Parisi, alleged that they stopped the then 20-year-old Meech to question him after he was supposedly seen leaving a suspicious home on Hoyt Street on the city’s West Side. Wardel "Meech" Davis Meech allegedly told the officers that he had marijuana on him. But it remains a mystery as to where the alleged marijuana went since it was never recovered. One of the officers alleged that they tried to handcuff Meech after he declared he had marijuana. That’s when he supposedly “fled several feet, tripped, fell, and became violent while lying face down on the ground.” Meech was then placed in a chokehold and repeatedly punched in the face. According to the Erie County Medical Examiner, Meech suffered from “ blunt impact injuries of the head, neck, torso, and extremities…Most of the injuries were located on Mr. Davis’s face, particularly around his nose, lips, and cheek. Mr. Davis’s left eye was swollen shut and there was a large abrasion on his right cheek and on the right side of his nose.” The Buffalo Police Department Use of Force Policy prohibits officers punishing persons “for fleeing, resisting arrest or assaulting a member, or for any other reason,” but both officers claimed that the excessive force was necessary to protect themselves from harm. Despite the repeated blows to the face while placed in a chokehold, the medical examiner deemed Meech’s death “a homicide due to his pre-existing medical condition: bronchitis/asthma.” However, missing evidence from the crime scene, conflicting officer reports about the incident, one of the two missing witnesses dying from an alleged drug overdose, and an improper police investigation, are all factors that prompted the community to repeatedly demand accountability for Meech’s death. And in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, those ultimatums increased significantly--yet they seemingly fell on deaf ears. In fact, nearly two weeks after Floyd’s death, CBS This Morning asked Mayor Byron W. Brown about the graphic messages from community members who wrote “Justice for Meech or No Peace” with chalk on the exterior of city hall. Brown, who is seeking a fifth term as a write-in-candidate for mayor after losing the Democratic primary to India Walton in June, said, “And we’re fine with that because those messages can be removed.” Continued Page 16
Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes Says “Cuomo Made the Right Decision” to Resign
In the wake of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that he will resign amid the growing fallout from a sexual harassment scandal, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes released the following statement: “It’s a bittersweet day, as we watched one of the most effective Governors in New York’s history resign. I’m grateful for the special attention provided to WNY and Buffalo in particular, and I believe that it will continue under Buffalo’s own LG Kathy Hochul. I look forward to working with her in her new capacity. “Everyone deserves to work and live in a harassment-free environment. I believe that Governor Cuomo made the right decision by resigning, allowing the state legislature to get back to governing and doing the people’s business. One of top priorities for me is appointing leadership to the Office of Cannabis Management in an attempt to stay on schedule for the legalization of adult use cannabis,” stated Assembly Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes.

Charles Harold Loeb, The Black Reporter Who Exposed a Lie About the Atom Bomb Charles H. Loeb defied the American military’s denials and propaganda to show how deadly radiation from the strike on Hiroshima sickened and killed. Charles H. Loeb was a Black war correspondent whose articles in World War II were distributed to papers across the United States by the National Negro Publishers Association. In the article, Mr. Loeb told how bursts of deadly radiation had sickened and killed the city’s residents. His perspective, while coolly analytic, cast light on a major wartime cover up. The Page 1 article contradicted the War Department, the Manhattan Project, and The New York Times and its star reporter, William L. Laurence, on what had become a bitter dispute between the victor and the vanquished. Japan insisted that the bomb’s invisible rays at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had led to waves of sudden death and lingering illness. Emphatically, the United States denied that charge. But science and history would prove Mr. Loeb right. His reporting not only challenged the official government line but also echoed the skepticism of many Black Americans, who, scholars say, worried that race had played a role in the United States’ decision to drop the experimental weapons on Japan. “Fasting is the first principle of medicine; fast and see the strength of the spirit reveal itself” -Rumi
O
ne of the greatest perpetuating myths is that we need to eat six small meals a day, every 2-3 hours to be healthy, maintain a functioning metabolism and heal. But you know what happens when you do that? Your body becomes overburdened with toxins. Considering that most of the food we eat is processed, packaged, genetically modified, and laced with pesticide exposure and artificial colors and flavors, the digestion process becomes an unpleasant chore that takes a complete toll on the body. The result? Chronic disease, obesity, premature aging, and premature death. Close your eyes and imagine your kitchen. Imagine that you cook breakfast and then leave. You come back to fix lunch and then leave. You come back again to make dinner and then leave. You do not wash a dish, clean up a crumb, wipe down the stove or the counter, take the garbage out or put anything away. Now, imagine you do this day after day, week after week, and year after year. What would your kitchen look like if you never cleaned it after cooking? It would be absolutely disgusting. This is what happens to our bodies when we eat six small meals day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year. Our cells, tissues, organs, and systems become overburdened from digesting the food we eat. The body has no time to eliminate the waste and toxins from breakfast before we are stuffing our mouths with lunch. It takes a significant amount of energy and resources for the body to digest, process, transport, store and eliminate waste from the food we eat. The more time the body spends on digestion, the less time is spent on removing toxins from our bodies and healing. Now imagine that you clean your kitchen. You wash the dishes, load the dishwasher, take out the trash, clean the oven, counters and sweep and mop the floor. Your kitchen looks pristine. It looks good and you feel good. Fasting is the equivalent of cleaning your kitchen. When you fast, the body begins to remove toxins from your system and repair the defective and diseased parts of cells. The time not spent on eating, the body can devote to healing. When we begin to The Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. fast, every part of our bodies begins to heal. FREE In-Person Mental Health First Aid Training!
Mental Health First Aid teaches individuals how to identify signs and symptoms of mental illness, raises awareness about mental health, and reduces stigma. Trainings include lunch! Intermittent fasting is one of the pillars of great health. Fasting is a way to honor and respect your body. Our bodies are so good to us, and it is easy to take for granted all the metabolic processes that are constantly occurring to keep us alive. When you fast, you are saying to your body, “Thank you for all you do, here’s a chance to heal, repair and renew”. When you fast, you heal. When is the last time you’ve cleaned your kitchen? THE RETURN OF CLASSIC SOUL, FUNK, AND R&B
B
By Dorothy Richmond
uffalo has been the staple for classic soul, funk, and R&B for many years. Dyke and the Blazers introduced their hit song “Funky Broadway.” Rick James and the Stone City Band put Buffalo on the map. Throughout the 80’s local bands such as Traffic Jam entertained the city every weekend. Many who grew up listening and entertained by these groups can only get a taste of the “Good Old Days” during the summer months with outdoor concerts. NuMuzik’s CEO and founder Freddy Shyy, wants to change that by bringing back classic soul, funk, and R&B in full production. Shyy has earned himself veteran status in the music industry throughout the United States, Canada, UK & Singapore. As an experienced musician, music director, and studio engineer, Freddy Shyy’s continuous love for music has set him on a different path where he wants to reintroduce the experience of classic soul, not only to the ones who grew up a part of it, but with this new generation. “The templet that was set by classic soul is lost to this new generation," Freddy explains. “The emotions you felt after experiencing a concert or hearing classic soul is lost. I want to bring that back. I want to teach young artists how to master that templet of old and project that Freddy Shyy emotion in their music. I am planning to implement a media program to teach kids artistry, music production, as well as video production.” In June, NuMuzik released its first video "Never End” where it is being streamed on all media platforms, as well as on the international platform through WDAP radio, hosted by Buffalo’s own David Allen. The video can be seen on YouTube. Continuing to work with groups such as The Original Stone City Band and Canadian artist Alex Price, who was recently signed by R&B singer Neo, along with his own experience, the blueprint is there to rebuild the nostalgia of great music once again. You can find Freddy hard at work at his office located at 50 Fountain Plaza and at his media center located at 567 Exchange St.

Aries Spears Brings His “Non-Politically Correct, Non-Woke, Old School, Raw, ‘In Your Face’ ” Comedy To The Helium This Weekend!
By Nanette D. Massey
M
an, if there’s one thing we all desperately need these days after coming out from our Covid lockdown, it’s a good laugh. Helium Comedy Club in downtown Buffalo is providing us with the opportunity to do just that all weekend with former Mad TV funnyman Aries Spears. Spears grew up in New York City and was so sure of what he wanted to do with his life, he took the bold step of quitting high school to begin his career in earnest. ”I knew what I wanted to do early so I just got my GED and flew by the seat of my pants.” He had already appeared on It’s Showtime At The Apollo and Russel Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam by the time he took the leap and moved to Los Angeles in 1992. You have to take a deep dive into the IMdb.com database to learn that early on, he actually landed a few guest appearances on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World. In movies, he is probably best remembered for his role in the 1996 blockbuster Jerry Maguire where he played the little brother “Tee Pee" (the one with the ants crawling down his bedroom wall!) Yes, the brother holding the football in the famous “show me the money” phone call scene. An interesting little known fact is that Aries actually auditioned for the lead role eventually made iconic by Cuba Gooding Jr. “The director needed the part to go to a big draw name,” he recalled. “But he liked me and wanted me in the film, so I was the brother.” When asked about his favorite movie making experience, Aries named The Pest (1997). “That was with John Leguizamo and we shot it in Miami. John is a very funny guy.” In television, you know him as the man of a thousand characters on Mad TV. Spears was a series regular from seasons
three through ten, making him the cast regular with the second longest stint on the show. Coming from working as a solo act for most of his career, the show “gave me valuable training in working with an ensemble cast; things like timing, adaptability to others, comedic sensibilities.” His most personally memorable characters were Belma Buttons, one of two rotund and rattling talk show hosts, and his many turns doing his impression of basketball great Shaquille O’Neal. Spears is on the calendar for six shows this weekend, giving you plenty of chances to catch his act. What can we expect from the comedian? “My show is non-politically correct, non-woke, old school, and raw. It’s real ‘in your face,’ real honest.” This will be his fourth or fifth time in Buffalo, as he recalls. “I’m really looking forward to coming back out there, I always have a good time” with Buffalo audiences. BaBa Eng & The Community Health Center of Buffalo To Host A Community Peace and Healing Circle On August 25th, God Willing, The Community Health Center of Buffalo, located at 34 Benwood Avenue, will host a Community Healing Circle to continue the conversaBaba Eng and Karima Amin tion about Our Beloved Community from 1 to 4 p.m. There is room only for 25 people in this circle, so PLEASE come early! We will begin promptly at 1p.m. The Healing Circle is part of a series of Circles started at The Community Health Center two years ago. The Circle will be conducted by BaBa Eng and Co-Kept by Karima Amin. Other Restorative Justice practitioners and/or adherents will be invited and are welcome to attend. Our focus will be “Youth Voices Have Value.” The Topics we would like to talk with our Youth about are: 1.Violence 2.Drugs 3.Sexuality/Gender Boxes 4.Being Heard Our Circles are based on African Centered Restorative Justice philosophy and practices. We will ask each young person in the circle to start the conversation by choosing one of the topics to talk about, ask questions about or just make a comment on. The circle will then proceed with those in attendance being given the opportunity of responding, for one minute, to the words of our youth. We will use what we call the sequential model of speaking by passing a talking piece around the circle, i.e. the person next to you receives the talking piece after you have taken your turn. Our Circle will run from 1 to 4 p.m. with a break in between. We want everyone present to have the opportunity to have their voice heard, so there is limited time for each person to speak. There will be light refreshments served. This is a Healing Circle as a beginning or continuation of processes and engagements that lead to peace for those present, even if only for the time we are together. It will not be to convince anyone that anyone else is right or wrong and there will be no conversations meant to convert anyone to someone else’s religion or way of thinking. This is for us all to really have the opportunity to listen to each other and to be heard ourselves. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Gun Violence is Out of Control. What Should/Can We Do"
VOICES 13
A
few years ago I expressed to my family members, and last year on Facebook, that the rising tide of gun violence seen in Buffalo, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, and all around these United States, should be declared a public health emergency. My mother, Betty Jean Grant, responded that I should contact the Erie County and New York State Departments Of Health, and demand that the Issue be declared as such. I admit it: I didn’t follow her advice, but I kept on paying attention to The Problem. I kept on complaining at the community level too, and eventually, through my Sherry community engagement (which has been aided in part by my connection to my dear mother’s expansive advocacy efforts), I wound up encountering (the late) SHERRILL Neal Dobbins, founder of the Most Valuable Parents [MVP] Of Buffalo, New York organization, and Bishop Frederick A. Gelsey, Sr., founder of One In Christ Temple and The Homicide Education and Prevention Project [THEPP]. Mr. Neal Dobbins was a proponent of the repeal of a set of firearm industry-friendly provisions attached to the U.S. Department Of Justice's Appropriations Bills, called the Tiahrt Amendments. In addition to other critically restrictive and prohibitive functionality, these riders serve to ensure that the release of gun tracer data to the public is blocked, including from researchers whom might analyze and utilize such findings in an effort to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon of gun violence and how it is impacting America's communities. The Tiahrt Amendments made the Federal Bureau Of Investigations [FBI] complicit in the destruction of gun purchase records, which would otherwise assist the nation's law enforcement community to identify the source (seller) and the chain of ownership (purchasers) of guns. The Tiahrt Amendments also made it impossible for civil lawsuits to hold gun sellers and manufacturers accountable, if a firearm was sold to an individual not eligible to own one and the gun was subsequently used in commission of a crime. As if all that were not terrible enough, the Tiahrt Amendments also prevented the Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms And Explosives [ATF] from requiring gun dealers to forward records of the dealers' inventory, to that agency. This furnished a lamentable 'opportunity window,' wherein dealers might have claimed their stock to have been burglarized, when in actuality the dealer opted to sell such: illegally. The Tiahrt Amendments ushered grief and death into our nation's communities, and I recall quite vividly: Neal Dobbins, may he Rest In Peace, was positively adamant, absolutely vehement, concerning the need for the Tiahrt Amendments to be repealed. Bishop Frederick A. Gelsey, Sr. is a tireless community activist and dedicated faith leader. He has served as a visiting chaplain at Erie County's correctional facilities for nearly three decades. He is so faithfull, that when, under departing Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard's Administration, visiting chaplains began to be disencouraged from coming into the jail(s) to do the Lord's Work ministering to inmates, Bishop Gelsey kept going in, he kept going back. Another important component of Bishop Gelsey's ministry, is a bold and logical community violence mitigation initiative he calls The Homicide Education and Prevention Project. In summary, Bishop is of the belief that cultural conditioning and behavioral choice are at the root cause of opportunity, willingness, and decision to commit a homicide. Bishop attributes homicidal impulses and tendencies as arising out of and manifesting, due to the culture (i.e. the values, beliefs, and norms) that individuals are formed within and become shaped by. I believe Bishop Gelsey has a definite point. I refer to these two community champions, and specifically to their determined efforts to extend their respective version life preserver to our beloved community, because something definitive and historic in the "proposed solution" column has transpired. New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has declared gun violence here to be a State emergency, an official disaster. This is the first such declaration in this country. Surely, more U.S. governors will follow Cuomo's lead. Along with establishing a New York State Office of Gun Violence Prevention, a $138.7 million dollar budget will target money to violence mitigation programs and create jobs for 'at-risk' youth in areas of the state that are being decimated by the scourge of gun violence. The Governor's Council On Gun Violence Reduction, a council focused on gun violence will also be established. Will anyone(s) from Buffalo be included in that forum? This writer proposes that (both) Bishop Frederick A. Gelsey, Sr. and at least one member of the MVP Organization, be considered for any such appointment(s). There are also many other neighborhood-level community groups and individuals, whom have been working in the trenches for decades, that likewise deserve consideration. I salute these folk. To learn more about the long overdue, common sense advancements made by the Governor, and the State Of New York Legislature, in addressing the Issue Of Gun Violence, visit the following URL on WKBW News Channel 7's website: www.wkbw.com/news/state-news/governor-cuomo-declares-disaster-emergency-on-gun-violence-with-first-in-the-nation-executive-order
dear editor The Need For Unity... Dear Editor: We as a community need to come together and identify and describe the issues we face, so we can collectively look for ways to resolve them. Unfortunately we are still dealing with the residual effects of enslavement and the Willie Lynch Syndrome. We are locked into mis-information and mis-education and don’t understand our own culture because we live out of our spirituality through the eyes of an oppressor. This is one of the main reasons why it is so difficult for us in the Black community to unify. We don’t understand that as Back men and women , no matter what our social status WE’RE ALL BLACK in America! The Bible teaches ( Hosea 4:1) “My people are destroyed for the lack of Knowledge: because thou has rejected knowledge.” We as a community have rejected, first the knowledge of self. To complicate matters we are given hand picked leaders. And in the political arena, we pit leader against leader. Sixteen years ago a young Black man was elected mayor of Buffalo. His victory was an exciting event in the community . But Over time many in the Black community came to realized that he did not have our best interest at heart. India Walton is a new face in the political arena. We owe it to ourselves and our community to show her some love and support (Black women in Particular) in her quest to become mayor. On November 2, Let’s give India a chance. Its time for change. Come out and vote, and tell your family and friends to exercise their voice as well. Unity matters. See you at the polls! I’m Just Saying... Darvin Adams

Summer In The City:
Fathering Through Basketball Photos and Story by A.Dorcely Most of our communities have been decimated with single parent homes nationwide. These homes usually consist of single mothers trying to raise young men as well as young women. The concern though is more so with mothers (a lot of times young mothers) trying to raise men. Common sense communicates the difficulty for a parent to advise on specific gender experiences. Chronicles of broken homes in our neighborhoods over centuries has been well documented. Within those broken homes is the absence of Black fathers, a cycle that continues to plague the Black family. Sports can be the unifier for some families. That’s where the D.A.D.S.(Dads Anointed Delivering Sons) comes in. “Basketball is the hook!” says the President and C.E.O., Dwayne Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson has been working with kids for 30 years. He teaches at School 53. The D.A.D.S. has men from the community working in it. It’s been in existence for about six years. These men work with kids ages 7-18 from all over Buffalo in ministry, mentoring, tutoring and of course basketball. They have programs and events going on year round. Mr. Ferguson mentioned the Summer Basketball Tournament and Camp as just one program. There is also a book bag giveaway, Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, Law Mentoring, an Easter Basketball Tournament as well and etc… Obviously with D.A.D.S. offering so much the next logical question for any parent would be about the cost involved. Mr. Ferguson stated that they try to work with families so as not to turn any kids away. He said for all inquiries he could be reached on his phone 716-563-1834. D.A.D.S. is about giving back! We’re a long way from regaining what we’ve lost as a people. But those of you that can, please try and father not just your own so our kids won’t miss having a dad!!! Follow sports journalist A. he Ellicott Town Center, which replaced the Ellicott Mall, was completed in 1997. Minnie Gillette Drive is one of the streets that runs through the Ellicott Town Center. Minnie Gillette was elected to the Erie County Legislature in 1977. She was the first African American woman elected to the Legislature. Her candidacy was backed by the Democratic, Republican and Conservative parties. Her obituary called her “a feisty political figure who strayed from party lines in the interest of her constituents.” She didn’t get involved in partisan politics, instead focused on serving her community. Mrs. Gillette worked with Legislator Joan Bozer to convert the former Post Office Building into the Erie Community College City Campus. At the time, people did not always appreciate old buildings Legislators Bozer and Gillette helped change that attitude, save the building, and bring ECC into the City. Mrs. Gillette helped to establish the “Ram Van,” which was a traveling lending library. She also fought to ensure that minority contractors got a fair share of county contracts. She served two terms as a legislator. After she left, she continued her work advocating for the homeless, the poor and the needy. She was appointed as the first director of the County’s Victim/ Witness Assistance Program. She worked at a food pantry in the Towne Gardens Housing Project. Among her numerous prestigious awards and honors, she was presented with a Martin Luther King Award in 1990 from the Erie County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Mrs. Gillete was very involved with a host of community organizations. She died on January 7, 1992. She had been ill with cancer for a year before she transitioned, but she continued to work on community projects up until about two weeks before she died. The Hon. Minnie Gillette is featured on the Freedom Wall at Michigan and Ferry. In addition to the street, the auditorium at ECC City Campus is named for her. required to promote opportunities for the maximum feasible participation of New York State-certified Minority- and Women-owned Business Enterprises (“MWBEs”) and the employment of minority group members and women in the performance of OGS contracts. All bidders are expected to cooperate in implementing this policy. OGS hereby establishes an overall goal of 30% for MWBE participation, 15% for Minority-Owned Business Enterprises (“MBE”) participation and 15% for Women-Owned Business Enterprises (“WBE”) participation (based on the current availability of qualified MBEs and WBEs). The total contract goal can be obtained by utilizing any combination of MBE and /or WBE participation for subcontracting and supplies acquired under this Contract. Article 17-B of the New York State Executive Law provides for more meaningful participation in public procurement by certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses (“SDVOBs”). Bidders are expected to consider SDVOBs in the fulfillment of the requirements of the Contract. Such participation may be as subcontractors or suppliers, as protégés, or in other partnering or supporting roles. OGS hereby establishes overall goals for SDVOBs’ participation under this contract as follows: 3% for the C trade contractor, 3% for the E trade contractor, 3% for the H trade contractor, and 3% for the P trade contractor, based on the current availability of qualified SDVOBs. Trades with 0% goals are encouraged to make “good faith efforts” to promote and assist in the participation of SDVOBs on the Contract for the provision of services and materials. REMEMBERING WARDELL 'MEECH' DAVIS continued from page 3 Several days prior to his sit down with CBS, Brown announced that he was banning the use of chokeholds by Buffalo police to apparently prevent another George Floyd incident. Brown said, “Officers are not trained to use the [chokehold] method in the academy, and that it’s not something officers are ever instructed to do in the City of Buffalo.” Brown said that since the police manual didn’t expressly prohibit the use of deadly chokeholds, he was making it clear that officers can no longer do so. However, the current Buffalo Police Department Use of Force Policy does allows for officers to exercise “pain compliance holds” when a person “physically resists” arrest. According to the LA Times, prior to the LAPD banning chokeholds in 1983, “the department defined the chokehold as a “form of pain compliance.” COMMEMORATION:Drummers participate in 1619 commemoration.
1619 Commemoration of the First Enslaved African Landing to be Held at Fort Monroe Hampton, Virginia - Join the Fort Monroe Authority, National Park Service, Project 1619 and the City of Hampton for the 1619 Commemoration of the First Enslaved African Landing program and concert on Saturday, August 21, at 11 a.m. at Fort Monroe Continental Park. As we commemorate 402 years of African American history we will reflect on the national and global significance of the African landing and the contributions of Africans and their descendants to American society. Throughout the day, speakers will explore themes of origins, identity, and freedom. At 11 am, featured keynote speaker, author, emcee and producer KRS-One, will give remarks. The program will also include a libation ceremony and African dance and drum performances. At 12 noon, there will be a National Bell Ringing Ceremony to remember the first enslaved Africans and honor 402 years of African American history. The Evolution of Freedom afternoon concert featuring trombonist, composer, and producer Delfeayo Marsalis will be held at 1:30 pm. Immediately following the concert Marsalis and KRS-One will hold a talk back session continuing the discussion of concepts of freedom. The program and concert are free and open to the public. In late August, 1619, 20-30 enslaved Africans landed at Point Comfort, today's Fort Monroe in Hampton, Va., aboard the English privateer ship White Lion. In Virginia, these Africans were traded in exchange for supplies. Several days later, a second ship (Treasurer) arrived in Virginia with additional enslaved Africans. Both groups had been captured by English privateers from the Spanish slave ship San Juan Bautista. They are the first recorded Africans to arrive in England's mainland American colonies. At the very least, 1619 represented a landmark in the long history of slavery in European colonies, and the beginning stages of what would become the institution of slavery in America. The New York Times produced a landmark special project devoted to its indelible mark on American society. While several states have prohibited the use of prone restraints, New York State and the City of Buffalo, specifically, have not. Ohio for example, banned prone restraints in 2009. On its state website, it says that “Placing people in a prone position is a potentially fatal maneuver that reduces a person’s ability to breathe. The dangers of restraint-related positional asphyxia are well documented.” Subsequent to Meech’s death, the medical examiner grew frustrated with the officers refusal to cooperate with her investigation. Therefore, she stated she was going to list Meech’s death as a homicide due to positional asphyxia caused by the officers and not as a homicide as a result of his respiratory condition. In Floyd’s initial autopsy report, the medical examiner declared that Floyd died as a result of pre-existing issues. That claim was later proved to be false. Floyd died due to positional asphyxia as a result of a prone restraint. Needless to say, much work needs to be done to reimagine policing in Buffalo. One can’t help but wonder, however, would Wardel “Meech” Davis still be alive if Buffalo’s four-term mayor had banned chokeholds before George Floyd’s murder? And, at what point will Buffalo officials stop turning a blind eye to police corruption, cover ups, and ambiguous policies? To learn more about Wardel “Meech” Davis’s homicide, read the New York State Office of the Attorney General’s Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit Report.
