ev. Verniece Warfield, a woman described by Mayor Lovely Warren as a ‘trailblazer and a fighter’ for the Rochester community, recently died in her home at the age of 102. Mayor Warren told WXXI News that withoug trailblazers like Rev. Warfield, she would not be mayor today. The first key to the city she gave as mayor was to Reverend Warfield, she recalled, who was an ordained minister and community organizer, among other accomplishments. The mayor released the following statement on her passing: “Reverend Vernice Warfield spent more than 100 years on this Earth as a servant of Rev. Warfield God – and as a servant of others. She was a trailblazer and a fighter for our community. You were as likely to see her leading her neighbors in prayer as you were to see her on a ladder, cleaning her gutters at the age of 102. “In February of 2014 I had the great honor of giving my first Key to the City as Mayor to Rev. Warfield. As the first female and second African American Mayor of Rochester, this moment was particularly meaningful, because I know that without trailblazers like her, I would not sit in this office. “Rev. Warfield lived off of East Main Street for 65 years – never losing hope for the neighborhood she knew and loved. And due to the hard work of Vernice and her neighbors, a new housing development in her neighborhood will bear her name – a testament to her lifelong pursuit of equality and opportunity. “Her legacy lives on through the thousands of lives she touched, the children she fought for, the men and women of color she mentored, and the parishioners who found peace and inspiration through her weekly services. Today, her sons Michael and Thomas continue the great work that she started. “May her memory be for a blessing – and may her life be an inspiration to us all.”

On August 15, 1843, the National Black Convention met at Buffalo, New York, with some seventy delegates from twelve states. The highlight of the convention was a stirring address by Henry Highland Garnet, a twenty-seven-yearold-Presbyterian pastor who called for a slave revolt and a general slave strike and said Blacks should "rather die freemen, than live to be slaves… let your motto be resistance!” In response, Frederick Douglass spoke out against the speech to the convention. Douglass and other abolitionists were aligned with William Lloyd Garrison's doctrine of a non-resistant approach to abolish slavery. Garnet, in turn, responded to Douglass, speaking for an hour and a half. Would his appeal sway the other delegates? Would Garnet's "call" be officially endorsed by the convention? A committee worked to tone down the message, but the convention's delegates still found the language too harsh. The convention did not sanction Garnet's approach to abolition. Yet Garnet's address was rejected, but by only one vote. Amos G. Beman of New Heaven, Conn., was elected president of the convention.

The Root - -What if Breitbart and Fox News had a couple of babies? What if they grew up to be a cool, slicker version of their parents and started becoming more powerful? Imagine if the young FoxBarts branded themselves as mainstream sources, but instead of courting “alt-right” white males and older conservatives, they focused their efforts on millennials and women. Now consider what kind of damage they could do if the leader of the free world became a fan—so much so that he struck a secret deal with the news outlets to let them control the entire media market. Meet Sinclair and Circa— Donald Trump’s new besties. You probably already know Sinclair by her full name, the Sinclair Broadcast Group. At the dawn of the Trump campaign, it owned or operated 173 television stations that covered 39 percent of the American TV market—which was the legal limit for how much of the television landscape a single company could control. Maybe you remember when

WGN’s hit television series Underground was canceled earlier this year. That happened after Sinclair bought the network. Almost everyone involved knew the show would disappear because Sinclair is ultraconservative, pro-Republican and scary. And it loves Donald J. Trump. Unlike television networks, Sinclair controls myriad television stations that are affiliates of Fox, CBS, ABC or NBC. Because of this, when most people watch their local news programs, they have no idea that they are watching news coverage that is shaped by the station’s parent company: the Sinclair Broadcast Group. The company goes as far as writing scripts for anchors, telling them which stories to cover and how to cover them. In fact, the local stations are forced to air right-leaning, ultraconservative segments (including a series of “must run” editorials featuring former Trump official Boris Epshteyn) during their news programming. This is why you often see the same story on different local news stations, like in the example below: Sinclair has tried to insert itself into politics for years. In 2010, Sinclair famously aired Breaking Point: 25 Minutes That Will Change America, a “documentary” sponsored by the National Republican Trust PAC that painted Barack Obama as an extremist funded by Hamas and suggested that he once said in a speech: “You want freedom? You’re gonna have to kill some crackers! You gonna have to kill some of those babies.” Two years later, Sinclair did the same thing, only this time the “news special” appeared only in swing states the night before the 2012 election. Sinclair’s hate for Obama is rivaled only by the company’s incestuous love for Trump. A Washington Post report revealed that during the 2016 election, Sinclair-owned stations gave disproportionately positive coverage to the Trump campaign for far more time than they allotted the Hillary Clinton campaign. Sinclair’s crush on then-can-

didate Trump wasn’t a coincidence. Politico reported that Trump son-in-law and longtailed-weasel look-alike Jared Kushner announced to business executives in a private meeting that the Trump campaign had struck a deal with Sinclair for positive coverage in exchange for ... we’ll get to that later. As a result, in the final months of the 2016 campaign, Sinclair affiliates ran 46 exclusive interviews with officials from the Trump camp (including 10 with Toupee Shakur himself) while airing a grand total of zero with Clinton. And then there’s Sinclair’s little sister, Circa. While you often hear about Trump’s affinity for Breitbart, you don’t hear people mention Sinclair-owned news site Circa very often. When the Sinclair Broadcast Group noticed that millennials received most of their news from the internet instead of television, Sinclair simply bought a news app and made it an offshoot of its programming. Aimed at teens and people in their 20s, Circa promotes itself as an unbiased digital media platform, even though it has distinctly pro-Trump leanings. Since its relaunch a year ago, Donald Trump Jr. (or, as he is called in some circles, “Dumb Trump”—not to be confused with his father, “Dumbass Trump”) has retweeted and shared numerous articles from the site. But no one loves Circa more than No. 1 Trump booty licker Sean Hannity. He often features Circa writers on his show, including the site’s security reporter Sara Carter, who appeared on the show 12 times in June alone, according to the Daily Beast. Hannity’s show is often a rundown of Circa’s news site, discussing headlines like “White House Logs Indicate Susan Rice Consumed Unmasked Intel on Trump Associates,” “Obama’s Rule Changes Opened Door for NSA Intercepts of Americans to Reach Political Hands” and “Trump Vows the GOP’s Healthcare Plan Will Have

‘Heart.’” To be fair, Hannity isn’t necessarily being lazy. One can imagine that finding pro-Trump news stories while simultaneously keeping one’s thin lips firmly planted on the president’s butt cheeks can become quite cumbersome. Although Circa touts its “independence” from Sinclair Media, its coverage mirrors its big brother’s in many ways. The website recirculates many of Sinclair’s video, and many articles from Circa become featured stories at Sinclair affiliate stations. So what’s wrong with this? Why should anyone care if a television station or website is conservative? After all, people can always find another news source, right? Well, not quite. One of the reasons this story is so important is that people often can’t get away from Sinclair’s slanted coverage, and they often don’t even know it. That’s how this all leads back to Trump, collusion and under-the-table, backroom dealing. Trump’s deal with Sinclair television stations is a pretty slick way of skirting the law. The Federal Communication Commission’s “equal time” rules mandates that televisions sta-

tions offer equal time to political candidates. But what if the company painted its advocacy as “news stories”? What if a network like Sinclair—instead of airing Trump political ads—simply hired his surrogates as news reporters? Even worse, what if there was nothing anyone could do about it? As soon as Trump took office, he announced to the country that he would be ridding businesses of those pesky impediments called “regulations.” Then he appointed a man named Ajit Pai as commissioner of the FCC. Pai’s first major act was to remove the cap on how many television stations one company could own. The next day, the Sinclair Broadcast Group, Trump’s old friend, purchased 14 more stations. Pai’s next major act was to approve a deal that had been held up because of media concerns, so he met with the principals of each company. When they emerged from negotiating in a posh Baltimore hotel, the Sinclair Broadcast Group had purchased Tribune Media for $3.9 billion, making it the largest owner of television stations in America, covering 69 percent of the country— Continued Page 11

2054 TOUR REVIEW

Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic & Nile Rodgers Turned It Out !

ith Earth Wind & Fire and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers co-headlining, 2054 The Tour promised to be this summer's greatest party. And when the two legendary acts stopped at the Key Bank Center this past Friday, August 11, they didn't disappoint! The crowd was still streaming MATT in when BAUER R o d g ers took the stage promptly at 8 and didn't waste any time, his sixpiece band shifted into gear with “Everybody Dance” and the momentum didn't let up throughout their one hour set. While Chic's original rhythm section of the late great Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson have long since passed, the current incarnation of this crucial group is a well oiled groove machine. Often categorized as a disco act, Rodgers was quick to de-

fine The Chic Organization (as it was also known) as an “r&b/jazz/rock/dance group.” However you wish to classify the man and his music, there's no doubting their venerable influence, especially potent during a medley of Rodgers' productions for other artists which featured killer takes on Diana Ross' “Upside Down,” Sister Sledge's “We Are Family,” Daft Punk''s “Get Lucky” and David Bowie's “Let's Dance.” When the set ended with the blistering medley of “Good Times” and “Rapper's Delight” (The Sugarhill Gang co-opted the 1979 classic) the audience had filled in and were on their feet. A short animated science fiction themed video preceded Earth Wind & Fire's set and when they came out with “Shining Star,” the center was grooving. Having lost founder Maurice White last year and now nearing five decades together, EW&F still have the dynamics that make them one of music's great live spectacles.

Hit after hit followed: “Sing A Song,” “Getaway,” “On Your Face,” “Serpentine Fire,” “September” and “Let's Grove” were all performed with regal authority and soulful finesse to the appreciative crowd, which spanned race, gender and age lines. A gigantic video screen in the background complimented the music with Afrocentric images, psychedelic effects and clips from the group's past - used most poignantly during “That's The Way Of The World” as a tribute to the late-White. Time hasn't diminished the talents of the three original

members Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson and Verdine White. Bailey's voice has aged like fine wine and his falsetto on “Reasons” is still breathtaking (not to mention his kalimba skills). Johnson was impressive on the Afro-Cuban groove of “Evil” and while Verdine can't fly in the air like he used to, he remains a most capable showman, and one of the greatest bassists of all time. Closing out their 90 minute set with an encore of “Fantasy” and “In The Stone,” Earth Wind & Fire left a musical message of unity, pride and love as seen in the smiles of audience members as they left the arena.

Race for Grant’s Legislative Seat Heats Up as Kirkwood Declares His Candidacy “In Front” of Opponents

A

press conference held last Friday by the Campaign to Elect Duncan Kirkwood 2nd District County Legislator, featured a showcase of community and faith leaders that enthusiastically endorsed the Kirkwood movement. The event, held at 11 East Utica Street, also saw the young 32-year-old candidate and community activist make it clear that he was running to win. Assuring that he “didn’t just wake up” and decide to enter the race, Kirkwood said he has a track record of fighting for the community . And when asked by a reporter how he saw his candidacy against a more experienced Charley Fisher on one hand, and the Democratically endorsed candidacy of April Baskin on the other, Kirkwood unleashed a litany of impressive accomplishments – from writing legislation and city laws to suing to protect voter rights and being the only candidate who’s served in the military. “I don’t see myself in between (the two), I see myself in the front!” he declared before cheering supporters. In reference to the Democratic nominee April Baskin, he quipped, “The Democratic party got it wrong before..." And as far as running against a more experienced candidate like Fisher, he stated that his (Kirkwood) record of accomplishments and fighting for the community speaks for itself. The bottom line, he concluded: ‘I think that I’m a pretty good candidate!’ DUNCAN E. KIRKWOOD. Pastor Charles H. Walker of Mt. Hope Community Church Photo Credit Marvell Kirkwood praised Kirkwood for being willing to step to the plate and take the baton of leadership. He said that his candidacy was significant in that as a young man, he would be able to better serve as an advocate for the youth, especially those who are troubled. “It’s all about generations,” said Rev. Walker. Mr. Kirkwood is seeking the seat currently held by 2nd District Legislator Betty Jean Grant, who is stepping down to run for Mayor.

harley H. Fisher received a huge boost for his campaign when the United Steelworkers Union officially endorsed him in his race for County Legislator for the 2nd District. It was monumental because the AFL-CIO decided not to endorse Mr. Fisher in his race and the Steelworkers decided to break that decision for this one race and this one race only, meaning that in this candidate they saw enough value, loyalty and integrity to choose something outside of the “politically safe” option which was to toe the line. It opens up a whole new ball game in this race and gives Charley H. Fisher III a burst of momentum that he is sure to carry to victory in the September 12th Democratic Primary. The United Steelworkers cited that they know Mr. Fisher and have developed a relationship with him over many months. Whereas other candidates simply expected the endorsement rathCHARLEY FISHER er than go with a more sincere and authentic route that showed that Charley truly is committed to the struggles of the common man and the common worker. Charley’s platform and beliefs include things that Labor Unions and all Democrats hold dear, like paid family leave, fair wages and safe working conditions, as well as protection from discrimination in the work place and job training programs. Charley Fisher’s campaign office is at 208 East Delavan and the office number is 716-249-1802. Mr. Fisher invites everyone to come and speak with him and his campaign staff at any time to speak about the issues and what problems that are arising in their lives. He takes constituent complaints and works with them to try and fix the issue. Saying explicitly “I have to help people now, not just if I win. People need me whether I win or lose and I intend to help them”.

Buffalo Really Is A Tale Of Two Cities! Dear Editor WHY????? Recently, having gotten my driver’s license, driving on a West Side street of Buffalo, I marveled on how well maintained and paved it was. Wanting to see if it was rare that the street was in such good condition, I took the time to drive around. Elmwood, Delaware, Hertel, West Delavan, West Ferry, Richmond, Niagara. Street after street great condition, liter containers that were not overflowing , it was great. Then I decided to drive on the East Side to see what the conditions were. I could not believe it. Clinton Street, William Street, Jefferson Avenue, all major roads on the East Side of the city, and it was a different world. What shocked me more, was the fact that may friends at school tell me the Mayor lives on the corner of one of these terrible streets. How shameful. As a young White resident of the City, this driving experience allows me to better understand my Black friends who have told me there is a double standard that exists in Buffalo. One for me, and one for them. I had honestly never really given it much thought but now… So I ask the City administration, why???? Why and how have you allowed this to happen? Now I too must say Buffalo Is a tale of two Cities. How unfortunate! Jake Silverstein

White Supremacy Terrorism: Carrying Tiki torches, a group of white supremacists partake in a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va.The group gathered to protest Charlottesville's plan to remove relics of its Confederate past - specifically a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

MADE IN AMERICA

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” -James Baldwin

The violence that erupted in Charlottesville last weekend has been the face of America since the beginning of time and no one knows that better, or has experienced the hatred and destructive, evil force of racism and bigotry greater, and longer, than Black people in this country.

W

hite nationalists and right-wing protesters who have converged on Charlottesville, Virginia, have been using a Nazi rallying cry "blood and soil." The group gathered to protest Charlottesville's plan to remove relics of its Confederate past, such as a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The "blood and soil" chants began Friday night when torch-bearing protesters marched at the University of Virginia and clashed with counterprotesters. More white nationalist protesters continued the cries during Saturday's gatherings. ‘Charlottesville Is Just the Beginning’? Emboldened and proclaiming victory after a bloody weekend in Virginia, white nationalists are planning more demonstrations to promote their agenda following the violence that left a woman dead and dozens injured. The University of Florida said white provocateur Richard Spencer, whose appearances sometimes stoke unrest, is seeking permission to speak there next month. And white nationalist Preston Wiginton said he is planning a “White Lives Matter” rally at Texas A&M University in September. Also, a neo-Confederate group has asked the state of Virginia for permission to rally at a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond on Sept. 16, and other events are likely. "We’re going to be more active than ever before,” Matthew Heimbach, a white nationalist leader, said Monday. James Alex Fields Jr., a young man who was said to idolize Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany in high school, was charged with killing a woman by slamming a car into a group of counter-protesters at the white nationalist rally Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. Fields, 20, who recently moved to Ohio from his home state of Kentucky, was held without bail on murder charges. He was photographed at the rally behind a shield bearing the emblem of the white nationalist Vanguard America, though the group denied he was a member. The U.S. Justice Department said it will review the violence, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions told ABC that the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer, 32, met the definition of domestic terrorism. A neo-Nazi website that helped promote the gathering said there will be more events soon.
