SPORTS: BILLS UPDATE
Buffalo Bills 2021 Pre-Season Kicks Off!
Y
es, another Buffalo Bills football season is about to begin! But first let me acknowledge to Bills fans Jarrod, Paul aka TGK, Bobby Jones and countless others that I was wrong about Josh Allen making it in the NFL. I still would have not signed him until after this upcoming season due to his inability to read an NFL defense. Allen took advantage of no live audiences last season and put-up MVP type numbers. Let’s all remember that the offense could hear the defensive signal calls in those empty stadiums allowing them to make adjustments which resulted in high scoring games. If you also remember once limited amounts of fans were allowed in stadiums for playoff games Josh Allen’s numbers dropped considerably and is a serious concern to an organization getting ready to shell out big money. It’s typical Buffalo Bills fashion - they put the cart before the horse. Once the season kicks off with live audiences there will be no more excuses for Allen and his teammates. The most important areas for them in upcoming pre-season games are the offensive line and run blocking. Bills have quality running backs like Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, and watch out for Antonio William’s explosiveness in between the tackles! The Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 16-15 in a typical preseason game with plenty of rookies on the field. Bills back up QB Davis Webb stood out with a cerebral performance, setting up screen passes and especially very good ball fakes in the back field on the 6-yard touchdown pass to Devin Singletary. Webb most importantly did not turn the ball over and on a screen pass play that the Lions defense defended perfectly Davis did not panic but showed poise by throwing ball towards the Bills running back in the area. Said Davis: “Operationally there were three throws I wish could have done better. The most beneficial for me is being with offensive coordinator Brian Daboll for three years and being able to grow with guys and work with the receivers on a daily

basis. I need to work on better ball placement and accuracy. I think being around these great coaches has allowed the game to slow down for me; no sacks and trying my best to not have any negative plays.” Davis Webb seems to have good leadership skills while Mitchell Trubisky lacks leadership skills along with being able to move the football down the field. Our offensive line must come back into form with Dion Dawkins just now coming back from a bout with COVID – 19. It will take some time for him to get back into game speed along with gaining his strength back. Bills right tackle Daryl Williams looks in top condition and ready for the season. Bills guards Jon Feliciano and Cody Ford are adequate for now. Cody’s left arm was wrapped with an arm brace as well. The Bills currently have 16 offensive line men on the roster so its going to be a wait and see on who actually makes the team in back up roles. I think veteran line man Jordan Devey, Jamil Douglas, Ike Boettger, Ryan Bates, Bobby Hart (holding penalties v. Lions did not help him) along with rookie Spencer Brown will all have strong opportunities to make the roster. It’s going to be interesting on offensive line. I will exam the Bills defensive unit in next week’s edition. Take care and be a good sport. Edmunds will serve the remainder of Givens' term, which runs through December 31.

uring the Democratic Mayoral Primary, Byron Brown refused to debate candidate India Walton, smugly chiding what he called her “lack of understanding of the role as mayor.” Accepting her challenge to debate he told the News, would be to “ ignore his responsibility to run New York’s second largest city.” In other words, he had better things to do. What a difference an election makes. Two months after losing to Walton - who won a stunning Primary upset victory - Brown who barely even campaigned has now found the time to debate. On Thursday, September 9, India Walton, the Democratic nominee for Mayor,

Walton Unveils Public Safety Platform for Safer, Healthier Buffalo
I
ndia Walton, Democratic Nominee for Buffalo Mayor, has outlined her Public Safety platform; a holistic approach of evidence-based, data-driven solutions that address root causes of violence and crime for a safer, healthier Buffalo overall. Speaking from Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Monday, Walton shared plans for safe neighborhoods, safe schools, safe housing, safe hospitals, safe streets, and safety from gender violence and sexual assault. “For me, the issue of public safety is deeply felt, and deadly serious,” said Walton. “I grew up on the East Side. I have raised four Black boys in Buffalo. I know what it means to fear for the safety and well-being of my closest loved ones.” Walton noted the housing, healthcare, and job insecurity, intensifying climate crisis, and still-raging pandemic that Buffalonians are still facing on top of devastating gun violence. “Let’s not mince words: the rates of gun violence and homicide so far this year make it abIndia Walton/Street Legacy Photos by Darvin Adams solutely clear that the current administration’s approach to public safety has been an abject failure,” Walton said. “It’s time for a change. It’s time to get serious about public safety in Buffalo.” The policies in Walton’s public safety platform are based on practices proven to work in Buffalo and elsewhere. Highlights are as follows: •Safe neighborhoods: Walton’s priorities for City Hall here include a mobile crisis team staffed by trained mental health professionals as a non-violent first responder corps for calls involving mental health crises, and the LIFE Camp model, a multi-faceted approach to interrupting violence. •Safe schools: Walton, a former school nurse, advocates for reducing class sizes and investing in guidance counselors, therapists, and school nurses, rather than the school-to-prison pipeline. •Safe housing: An accomplished executive of a democratically-run housing development corporation, Walton believes in fostering Community Land Trusts to provide affordable housing on a permanent basis, and shifting homeless outreach responsibilities from the police department to social workers, community organizers, and other professionals trained in connecting unhoused people to services and housing. Emmett Till
Remember Emmet Till
On August 28, 1955, while visiting family in Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Emmett Till, an African American from Chicago, was brutally murdered for allegedly flirting with a White woman four days earlier. His assailants—the White woman’s husband and her brother—made Emmett carry a 75-pound cotton gin fan to the bank of the Tallahatchie River and ordered him to take off his clothes. The two men then beat him nearly to death, gouged out his eye, shot him in the head and then threw his body, tied to the cotton gin fan with barbed wire, into the river. On September 23, the allWhite jury deliberated for less than an hour before issuing a verdict of “not guilty.” The Emmett Till murder trial brought to light the brutality of Jim Crow segregation in the South and was an early impetus of the civil rights movement. In 2017, Tim Tyson, author of the book The Blood of Emmett Till, revealed that Carolyn Bryant recanted her testimony, admitting that Till had never touched, threatened or harassed her. “Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,” she said. The FBI reopened the case in 2917 but closed the investigation in 2020 with no charges.

n Tuesday, July 20th Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski, along with Legislator Howard Johnson attended a football practice for the Beast Elite Ducks at Emerson Park. Before the football practice began both officials presented a check for $11,000 from the Fillmore District Council Office in conjunction with $5,000 in funding from Legislator Johnson totaling over $16,000 in funds. Earlier this spring the youth football team's storage hut was burglarized at Emerson Park leaving extensive damage to the team’s equipment, security systems and electronics. It was the second time in two years their hut had been burguralized. At that time, both elected officials committed to helping the football team. “Now, more than ever, recreational sports and leagues such as the Beast Elite Ducks are needed to provide an outlet to our young people. This team provides mentorship, team and character building that is very important to this neighborhood” said Legislator Johnson. “I want this team know that their Council Member will stick by and support them through the sunshine and the rain. I know this funding will go to great use towards equipment for the team that is needed to play. Joining with Legislator Johnson to make this funding happen was teamwork at its best” said Council Member Nowakowski.

of cancer-related death among men 40 and older. Black men are 1.6 times more likely than other men to develop prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from the disease. It’s also the mostdiagnosed cancer in Hispanic men. However, when caught early, prostate cancer can be cured more than 90% of the time. Many men might shy away from early detection opportunities because of fear: Fear of finding cancer or fear of the process used to detect it. Early detection for prostate cancer involves two steps: A digital rectal exam (DRE) and a blood test determine whether a man has an elevated level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a biological marker that can indicate a problem with his prostate. The PSA test is a blood test that can be done every year to determine whether the amount of the compound is increasing. “Men, for some reason, they feel emasculated, less of a man if they have the exam,” Richard Satterwhite says. “There’s a machismo factor, on top of a lot of mistrust, especially among the AfricanAmerican community, when it comes to medicine in general. Men need to know that they’re in the driver’s seat. Going to see your doctor doesn’t mean they’re going to operate on you; it’s just going to see a doctor, so you know what your PSA numbers are. Once you know that, they’ll be able to follow you from check up to check up so if there’s a change, it can be investigated.” Satterwhite is one of the founders of Men Allied for the Need to Understand Prostate Cancer (MANUP Buffalo), an educational outreach group that talks with men and their partners about the importance of regular health checkups and routine early detection tests, including for prostate cancer. The group also is behind Cruisin’ for a Cure Buffalo-Niagara, an event Satterwhite likes to call “the car show that saves lives.” This is the 10th year for the event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, at Roswell Park. It’s a full day of classic cars, tuners, trucks and motorcycles. It’s also an opportunity to participate in the prostate cancer early detection clinic and receive a DRE and PSA test, free of
“My biggest concern has always been the lack of prostate cancer education,” Satterwhite says. “MANUP Buffalo was formed by a bunch of guys, all prostate cancer patients, who didn’t have the information we needed. We realized if we didn’t have it, other men weren’t getting it either. Our main talking points are about prostate cancer education about the disease and the importance of going to talk to your doctor.”
Early detection means more treatment options. Prostate cancer is very treatable if caught early on. Part of the reason Satterwhite and the other survivors called their group MANUP is because it’s commonly used as a way for men to be encouraged to get over their fears. “Fear of the unknown will kill you. It’s hard to be afraid of something you understand.
of color, but no one knows why. The reality is, beyond cancer, there’s high blood pressure, diabetes and other things that impact people of color at higher rates. Because of all of those things, it’s good to have regular checkups. You have to do everything you can to give yourself a decent quality of life.”

Legislator April Baskin Urges New York’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission:
Don’t Divide Erie County’s Urban Core!
T
he recent release of the 2020 census data, showing that Buffalo’s population grew for the first time in 70 years is an important reminder that redistricting is underway. Thank you to everyone who completed their census forms, this shows how important it is stand up and be counted. We need this kind of community action to secure resources for our city. Every decade, based on new census data, states are responsible for drawing the lines for state legislature and congressional districts. As Chair of the Erie County Legislature, I am overseeing the county’s redistricting process, which will begin shortly. This week, I was honored to provide testimony to New York’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission regarding the 26th Congressional District, which currently includes the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls and the inner ring suburbs of Erie County.
At present, Erie County is represented by two congressional districts, the 26th and 27th, which is proper since the population of Erie County, 954,236 as of the 2020 census, is greater than the maximum number comprising one congressional district. I am strongly urging the commission to draw the successor district to the current 26th District as close to its present version as the law will allow, since the current 26th District is the most ideal congressional district from a good-government perspective in New York, and arguably nationwide. The current lines of New York 26 meet many of the criteria that make a district fair and equitable and are often missing in partisan gerrymandered districts. The areas that I would like to focus on is the preservation of both the core of the current district and communities of interest. The present NY-26 unites communities of interest in as
effective a manner as any district in the state. It unites municipalities with substantial populations including communities of color – including the Cities of Buffalo, Lackawanna and Niagara Falls and the towns of Amherst and Cheektowaga – and divides only 2 municipalities in very minor ways to ensure the required population count was met. Moreover, the district is almost entirely urban and suburban, and does not include any outer-ring suburbs or rural areas. As an elected official, I have made equity and representation priorities. I have centered discussions regarding the distribution of federal funding around
the needs historically disadvantaged communities and have ensured that people of color have been appointed to boards and commissions (making several of them the first non-White appointee in Erie County history.) Put simply: this district, as comprised today, offers the best opportunity for the election of a candidate who can best represent our community in terms of policy priorities and identity. It also represents one of the best opportunities in upstate New York to elect a person of color to Congress. Any attempt to divide the urban core of Erie County could negatively impact historically disadvantaged communities throughout our region. It is essential to the effective representation of our region that the City of Buffalo and its immediate firstring suburban areas remain united in one congressional district, and that partisan gerrymandering does not divide these areas and dilute the voting strength of these local communities.

ENDORSED: New York State Assemblymember Jonathan D. Rivera has endorsed India Walton for mayor. Challenger Photo
India Walton Receives Endorsement from Assemblymember Jonathan D. Rivera India Walton on Tuesday received the endorsement of Assemblymember for New York State’s 149th Assembly District, Jonathan D. Rivera, in the race for Mayor of Buffalo. He was the first local elected official to formerly endorse India Walton's campaign. The announcement took place on 14th Street, in front of Rivera’s childhood home which is still owned by his father, Niagara District Council Member David Rivera. “It is with incredible excitement that I lend my support to such a dynamic and engaging leader. The bold and innovative energy that India has shown is exactly what we need right now,” said Rivera. “I believe in leading with compassion and in the di-rection towards equity; that’s why I believe in India.” “She is people driven and not self-driven. She’s a fighter for fairness, she’s eager to explore the new and not to repeat the same mold, eager to take on the challenges the city has and eager to do it collectively.” Rivera is a life-long resident of Buffalo and a proud graduate of the Buffalo Public Schools. Growing up as the son of a police officer and teacher aide, his family demonstrated the value and honor of serving the community. “I’m honored to be endorsed by Assemblymember Rivera, and excited that he, like many of our local leaders, recognizes that it is time for a change,” said Walton. “Together, we can build the safe, healthy Buffalo our working class families and communities need and deserve.” She also received the endorsement of EMILY’s List this week, the largest national resource for women in politics. More information about India Walton, the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Buffalo and sole mayoral candidate on the November 2 General Election ballot, can be found at www.indiawalton.com, Facebook, Twitter at @indiawaltonbflo and Instagram at @indiawaltonforbuffalo.

The Aquarius full moon on Sunday, August 22, 2021, aligns with the planet Jupiter. So the spiritual meaning of full moon August 2021 relates to personal, material, and spiritual growth and good fortune (basically one of the luckiest moons!) The August 2021 full moon has an especially good influence on intimate relationships.
•Safe hospitals: Given that nurses like Walton and other hospital workers suffer terrible rates of workplace violence, the Democratic nominee proposes investing in medical social workers to deescalate tense situations and working with organized labor and Albany to win enforceable safe nurse-to-patient ratios. •Safe streets: Walton takes the evidence-based approach that infrastructure improvements are greatly more effective than routine traffic stops at reducing traffic collisions, and supports relocating collision investigation from the police department to the De-
partment of Transportation to streamline life-saving improvements.
•Safety from gender violence and sexual assault: Walton, herself a survivor of domestic violence, believes in community-based supports for survivors and noncarceral restorative justice practices to put those who have done harm on a path to accountability, amends, healing and growth. “Justice for The Buffalo 5!”
Judge rules in favor of John Walker and Darryl Boyd of The Buffalo Five in their decades long fight to prove their innocence for a crime they did not commit.
J
ohn Walker and Darryl Boyd of the “Buffalo Five,” after decades of trying to prove their innocence in a 1976 murder have finally received justice. At press time we learned that The Honorable Christopher J. Burns' ruled to vacate their wrongful 1976 murder indictment (Erie County Number 41-413) and to overturn their wrongful convicted felon and parolee status. Needless to say Walker and Boyd were overjoyed, and during a press conference in MLK Park were still trying to process the days' developments. “I feel good. I feel happy…I don't think I’ve ever been this happy, ”said John. "But this whole thing has taken a lot out of me,” he continued. “Ya’ll took so much away from me…so much away from my son.” “We did it! Collectively we did it!” said Darryl tearfully. He said he was happy that his mother “got a chance to see the victory!” “I thank God,” his mom Thomacenia Knight said softly. "I knew it was going to be the end (of this) one day!” John explained that at one point there had been a lull in their struggle, and being exonerated seemed like a distant dream. Then the pandemic hit. The marches. George Floyd. The universal calls for justice. Indeed, justice was in the air. And what really struck home, and inspired them to regroup and get back in the fight she said, was the Cariol Horne case. “Cariol Horne’s fight inspired us to start fighting again,” he said. At one point John said he felt like “it was now or never"; that this may have been their last chance for justice. Fast forward to Wednesday’s ruling. “We knew it was our time,” he said. During a press conference in his downtown office later Wednesday afternoon, DA Flynn said he “respectfully disagrees” with the judge’s decision, but that he would not appeal. “I posed the motions I lost. That’s the way the system works,” he stated. John countered that authorities never had a case from day one. “You had no blood, no footprints, no nothing to ever connect us to this crime,” he concluded.
The Deadline to Register to Vote in The November 2 General Election is THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 30TH!
By Joan L. Simmons
he answer to the question; Why do political candidates and politicians use fear and exploit it to influence and manipulate voters' behavior? The answer is both simple and complicated. They use fear because it works. The universal trigger for fear is the threat of harm, real or imagined. Historically, it has worked for both Democrats and Republicans, at least in the short term. "Fear is arguably as old as life. It is deeply ingrained in the living organisms that have survived extinction through billions of years of evolution. Its roots are deep in our core psychological and biological being and, it is one of our most intimate feelings. Danger and war are as old as human history, and so are politics and religion. Demagogues have always used fear for intimidation of the subordinates or enemies and shepherding the tribe by the leaders. Fear is a very strong tool that can blur humans' logic and change their behavior." (1) Demagogues defined as those politicians who seek to further their own personal agenda by arousing peoples' emotions to some danger real or imagined, exaggerating those dangers to stoke fear, and lying for emotional effect. For the demagogue the end justifies the means-to win at any cost. Demagogues exploit a basic weakness in democracy: because ultimate power is held by the people, it is possible for people to give that power to someone who appeals to the lowest common denominator of a large segment of the population. This strategy worked very well for Donald Trump, who took this strategy to an obscene and dangerous new level. The Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan used/use it. I am disappointed yet not surprised that Mayor Brown chose to use "fear" as a strategy in his bid to change the results of the democratic primary that he lost. He took a page out of Trump's playbook. Use fear and if that does not get the desired result, resort to name calling, insulting and disrespecting your opponent and calling into question their integrity and honesty. I was also not surprised when Republicans, Pro-Trump Republicans, and other members of their political power structure leaped to aid Mayor Brown, verbally and financially. After all, he has earned their support and loyalty, even if that loyalty is about their self-interests. They have benefited greatly from his administration's largess and benevolence. For the Republicans, Byron Brown is as close to having a Republican in the Mayor's office as they have had in over fifty years, when the last Republican, Chester Kowal, served as Buffalo's Mayor from 1962-1965. What do "they" fear? I think it is safe to conclude that they fear losing the privileged and preferential status they believe would be lost under an India Walton administration. One does not have to be an Economist to understand the ramifications of not having a healthy, vibrant ever expanding business community. However, it must be one that works to improve the quality of life for all of the citizens of the City of Buffalo and not be at their expense. I submit that Buffalo corporate welfare far exceeds the monies individual citizens receive in public assistance. Lastly, in all honesty, I am sick and tired of the divisiveness, hyperbole, lies, misinformation, distortions and dishonesty. I readily admit that the last five plus years has taken their toll on my belief in the sustainability of our representative democracy. It has exposed just how fragile it is and that is scary. Are we truly at the point where if a politician does not like the results of a fair election they can just try to change the outcome? That is not a democracy that is an autocracy. Mayor Brown attributes his loss in the primary to how he ran his campaign. Is it ego, arrogance, pride or a combination that prevents him from even considering the possibility that it may be instead, how he has run his administration for the past 16 years? He needs to be reminded that he was elected, not anointed. (1) Excerpts from: Arash Javanbakht M.D. A Psychiatrist and Neuroscientist. "The Politics of Fear". Posted in Psychology Today, March 2019.
