Grandma ReRe” Thomas Comedy Roast

Former Drug Addict Turned Comedian to Raise Awareness for Drug Addiction and Mental Illness to Benefit Rochester’s Sojourner Home Rochester, NY—On Saturday, August 4 at 6 p.m. local comedian Renetta “Grandma ReRe” Thomas will host a comedy roast to raise awareness for drug addiction and mental illness and to benefit the Sojourner Home, the very institution that helped her become drug-free. The comedy roast will be held at Boulder Coffee

Co., 100 Alexander Street in Rochester; the official venue sponsor for the event. After a candid interview with ROC Awards creator Yolanda Smilez about how she became addicted to drugs as a homeless teenager, Thomas will take a seat near the stage as ‘Grandma ReRe’. Her fellow

comedians will honor her in a unique way—by making jokes about her journey to recovery and her career as a comedian. All while incorporating comical, spot-on comments about the impact of drug addiction in the city of Rochester. The comedy roast will feature 6 local comedians, musical

BILLS UPDATE / By GEORGE RADNEY

Bills Back for 19th Training Camp in Rochester It’s almost hard to believe that the Buffalo Bills are back for their 19th season in Rochester, NY! I can remember like it was yesterday, when a Doug Flutie/ Rob Johnson led Bills team came to St. John Fisher campus along with Eric Moulds, after the infamous “Touchdown Throw Back” loss in playoffs to Tennessee Titans. The 2018 Buffalo Bills lacks star power but is full of up and coming stars of the future. The Bills will be made up from at least 20 Un-Drafted Free agents (UFA), due to the miss-handling of salary caps and the 2018 Draft. The Bills have no money to sign high priced free agents and can only pick up cheaper veteran players. My “Diamond in the Ruff” category has former Alabama wide receiver Robert Foster. If he can stay healthy he could be the steal of 2018 UFA’s. I also like Clemson wide out Ray Ray McCloud III as possibly being able to help the Bills receivers corps. The Bills may just have to start Josh Allen to see what he can do and learn in real game action on how to put a touch on the ball. He currently has no touch on his passes and is an interception machine waiting to get going. The Bills will take their lumps with him. Josh Allen reminds me of Ryan Mallett, another strong armed QB, who can throw the deep ball very well but absolutely can’t throw it 10 to 20 yards down field by taking something off the ball. Hopefully Josh can learn over the season how to drop passes into a tight space and not caving in a receiver’s chest by throwing the ball TOO hard. The Bills might as well trade tight end Charles Clay and running back LeSean McCoy ( if legal troubles clear up ) in order to get draft picks for 2019 or quality young players for this season. Those guys were brought in to help Bills make playoffs , which they did, but the team is now in total rebuild mode and their high salaries are hurting the team ‘s efforts to bring in more young, less expensive talent. I have already noticed that two of my favorite picks to make the team last year are back on the roster at tight end Jason Crooms and Keith Towbridge. I would go with them and trade Clay to a contending team for draft picks. The Bills also need younger running backs, which was not addressed in the draft along with the offensive line. I will comment on the defensive unit, which does not need as much help as offense ,in next week’s edition. entertainment and a comedy set by Grandma ReRe. Guests will also have the chance to sign up for volunteer opportunities for upcoming awareness events and programs. This is the first of several events that Thomas will participate in leading up to National Recovery Month (September) to raise awareness about drug addiction and mental illness. “Communities across the na-

tion are in crisis—especially with the nationwide opioid epidemic,” said Thomas. “Drug addiction is one of the leading causes of mental illness and it is destroying our communities." Tickets for the event are twenty dollars and can be purchased athttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/roast-of-grandmarere-tickets-47584931812.

Fruitbelt Neighbors Speak for Us All in the Wake of Community Tragedy

C

reative ideas, a call for unity, and a plan for action was the outcome of the “Emergency Community Meeting” held at Centennial Baptist Church last Saturday in the Fruitbelt neighborhood. The event, which drew over 150 people, was designed to allow residents the opportunity to speak without fear as they shared legitimate concerns and collectively sought solutions. Bishop Darius Pridgen, one of the conveners of the meeting, was accompanied by the police department’s top brass to listen, learn and respond to the community’s concerns. Less than a month after gunmen shot and killed, 54-year old Yvette Johnson and her 17-month old grandson, shooters returned to the same Grape Street home and shot two more young men. Neighbors called for not only an end to the violence, but the need for better police-community relations and accountability. The biggest block to giving up “information” several speakers shared, is lack of trust of authorities to protect them. The officers present did not argue the point and both they and Bishop Pridgen acknowledged that there was a problem. The officers did however point to current community policing efforts, as an attempt to resolve the issue. Everyone was not impressed. “Respect is not a one-way street” demanded one young man. “One of the biggest pieces missing over the years is the relationship between the community and the police…you want the community to trust ya’ll but you have offices who disrespect the community… that’s the main problem.” He assured if more respect was shown to everyday citizens, officers would get a lot more people to engage in the process. “Every police officer needs to be a community police officer,” he said. However those gathered also admitted that just as importantly, we have failed ourselves as a people and a community, “We’ve got to get back to being nosey neighbors,” encouraged Council President Bishop Pridgen. “We’ve got to be a community (again)!” He said that as a people we also have to a get away from using the term "homicide victims." That term numbs and desensitizes us, he explained. -Do You Know Where Your Children Are?Most agreed that we need to know where our children are and what they are doing and if they’re doing anything wrong, we need to intervene. “It’s the community who is going to make it (the violence) go away,” said a youth worker. “Many of the kids creating the crimes are related to someone in this room.” He encouraged parents to please “moniter your children.” “We’ve got to rethink some things,” he added. “We got people being killed every day.” One senior asked emotionally, “how can you sit back and see this kind of damage and not say something?” In addition to more active parenting and better police-commu-

Death of India Cummings Meeting and Discussion

A Message From The Youth

Community meeting and discussion concerning the death of India Cummings and the Erie County Holding Center will be held on Thursday, August 2, from 6-7:30p at the Delevan Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Ave. Please join Erie County Legislator April Baskin at this important meeting to discuss the report of the NYS Commission of Correction’s Medical Review Board, which investigate in-custody deaths. For information please contact Leg. Baskin at 716-895-1849.

Community activist Nate Boyd also spoke to the press following the community meeting. Boyd, who is a member of The Most Valuable Parents peace movement founded by Neal Dobbins, said there has been some conversation with many of the young men in the community who, when asked what they wanted, said they would like to see three things happen in order to help stem the violence: a music studio to relive tension thru music instead of guns. The site they suggested is the Apollo Media Center on Jefferson Avenue. “They literally said they would battle with music and not guns,” said Nate. Second they want decent jobs. And third something to do’ in their spare time like being able to go to a state of the art community center. Both the community center and music studio would offer conflict resolution classes. “This is straight from the young people in the community,” said Nate Nate Boyd makes a point.

BLACK FACTS

UNITED WE STAND: Council Member Bishop Pridgen held a brief press conference following an “emergency community meeting” at Centennial Baptist Church last Saturday. Among those pictured with him are Assembly Member Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Bishop T. Anthony Bronner of Elim Christian Fellowship and historian and educator Eva Doyle.

nity relations, other suggestions coming from the meeting included: •The need for both home security cameras and strategically placed cameras throughout the neighborhood, which would be the city’s responsibility. Bishop Pridgen said he would look into finding funding to help reduce the cost for those who wanted cameras. •The importance of having Block Clubs on every street so that folks are meeting and talking to their neighbors. Pridgen’ said his office will also be looking into helping that become a reality. •The school to prison pipeline needs to be seriously addressed, a former educator urged. “Stop pushing our Black male students out of school – there is another way to deal with them!” •If you have information about a crime and you don’t trust calling the police, call your pastor or elected official. Another suggestion was for the department to designate a high level, trusted person to take the information . “When you feel like you’re out there alone its tough,” acknowledged Bishop Pridgen. “That’s the reason for this meeting.” "As a community we have to show a united front. Our message must be, ‘We’re united together and we won’t be silent!' " At the end of the meeting Rev. Alan Core, host pastor of Centennial Baptist, announced that three major churches in the Fruitbelt, New Zion, Promise Landand Centennial, were hosting a community healing party on August 25 on Peach Street all the way to Mulberry Street. The joint effort will be a first.

THE BEST CIRCUS EVER!

UNIVERSOUL CIRCUS RETURNS TO BUFFALO TO CELEBRATE ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIG FUN UNDER THE BIG TOP AUGUST 8-19

W

hen the UniverSoul Circus returns to Buffalo for two weeks beginning Wednesday, August 8th to celebrate its “We Are One 25th Anniversary Tour,” it will also be a milestone for Buffalo’s own Econuel Ingram. Econuel, who is celebrating a quarter of a century with the circus, is the person responsible for making his hometown a destination for one of the nation’s top rated family entertainment events. UniverSoul Circus sets up its single ring big top at Outer Harbor Buffalo (325 Fuhrmann Blvd), August 8th thru 19th for an unforgettable journey of electrifying, edgeof-your-seat performances on weekday mornings and evenings, and three shows on the weekends. The Circus has forever transformed the world’s urban entertainment landscape with a powerful combination of music, laughter and extreme thrills. The show features a multicultural conglomeration of performers from virtually every corner of the globe, in-

cluding South Africa, USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Chile, Colombia, Russia, Guinea, Gabon and Mongolia. Three new acts are featured this year, including a Ballerina, Perch Pole, Trampoline, and an amazing Aerial act – all from Cuba. “One of the most exciting parts about this 25th anniversary circus,” said Econuel, "is that it’s a milestone that an African American owned production has become one of the number one family entertainment entities in the country.” UniverSoul Circus is rated as one of the top two circuses in America along with Cirque du Soleil. UniverSoul’s fresh approach to family friendly live entertainment has garnered it a coveted spot as one of Ticketmaster’s top ten most requested family events, along with other shows including Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, and Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Tickets to the UniverSoul Circus are now on sale at the Community Action Organization of WNY @ CAO Headquarters corner of Leroy

A special show for underserved families will take place on August 14th at 4 p.m. The circus, Mr. Ingram noted, is reaching out across the country to give all children a UniverSoul experience. -Native SonEconuel, currently a market-

ing consultant for the City of Stockbridge, Georgia, resides in Atlanta with his wife Barbara and two sons. He was employed by the circus for 22 of the last 25 years. However for the past few years he’s worked for the UniverSoul Circus as an independent consultant for only a few cities – Buffalo (he first bought the circus here in 1998) being closest to his heart. His roots run deep. Born and raised in the Nickle

City, Econuel, a record-holding star athlete, was educated at East High School, Genesee Community College and Johnson C .Smith University. His introduction to advertising and marketing began here with Astro Advertising Agency, WKBW-TV (the first African American Account Executive) and WUFO Power 96.5 radio. He honed his skills out west in California and then in Atlanta as General Manager at WAOK. Being a native son of Buffalo played a significant role in helping him land the outer harbor, and he said there were lots of people to thank who helped make it possible, including Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples Stokes, Mayor Brown and Bishop Darius Pridgen. “The circus has really evolved,” Econuel continued. “ It’s morphed into a multicultural venture owned by a visionary Black man -Cedrick Walker –with acts from around the world!” - one of the changes Econuel has long envisioned. ‘If we invite the world then they’ll come!”

This year, for the first time, one of the UniverSoul Circus tours is Europe (Scotland). -Circus Ring of FameA great honor was recently bestowed upon UniverSoul Circus Founder and CEO Cedric Walker. The Circus Ring of Fame Foundation, Inc. selected Walker for 2018 enshrinement into its prestigious Circus Ring of Fame in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to circus arts and culture.” “This has been an amazing journey and a fantastic ride,” said Walker. “Generations have witnessed our growth and have evolved with us. We want our fans to know they will always be a part of the UniverSoul Circus family. Consider us a communityminded, family-oriented, spiritually-uplifting entertainment revival for families across America.” For more information, tickets, show times and schedules, visit universoulcircus. com. Superfoods For A Healthier Life Thank you for Rising Up Right this week. Let's get right into the highlights. - Buffalo Bills News The Buffalo Bills training camp started on Thursday with a bang as Sean McDermott, Brandon Beane, and LeSean McCoy had some very in depth press conference talks with myself and the media. The interviews were very informative. The experience on the field was beyond remarkable. The Buffalo Bills look very focused on training camp. The standout players on the first day of training camp were Rod Streater and Tremaine Edmonds. I was very impressive by Edmonds speed and agility. I also very excited to see Streater catching everything that was thrown to him no matter who was the quarterback. Speaking of quarterbacks, I was quiet excited to see that we will have an intense, and watch worthy competition between Josh Allen, AJ McCarron, and Nathan Peterman. My advice to the Bills Nation would be to keep an eye out on Robert Foster from Alabama. He is showing a lot of potential. He has good hands and good speed that with time could make him a reliable resource to the wide receiver corps. Get Ready as the training camp moves from St.John Fisher College to New Era Field on Friday August 3rd. Tickets will be required to attend this event. -Buffalo Bisons NewsThe Buffalo Bisons entered a short four game homestand on Monday against Lehigh Valley. This is a very important home stand as the Bisons will need to pick up the pace in the wins column if they want to make the postseason. The Bisons after the homestand will be at war on the road against a Scranton Wilkes Barre team that currently has an 8 game lead on the Bisons. When was the last time the Bisons made the postseason? The best hitters like Darnell Sweeney, Rowdy Tellez, and Danny Jansen will need to load up the hits if they have any chance. The Bisons play today at 5:35pm for Game One of a doubleheader and tomorrow at 1:05pm. -Buffalo Sabres News For the last couple weeks major attention has been put on negotiating 23-year-old Sam Reinhart's contract. Reinhardt is the last remaining unsigned free on the team. Reinhart has played 249 games with the Sabres. In those games he has complied 65 goals and 140 points. Sam carries a 0.26gpg and a 0.56 ppg. Hopefully the Sabres will re-sign Reinhart with the young talent this Sabres has because he could be a great role model to some the rookies coming into the franchise. What moves will the Sabres make next as we get closer to the preseason? “Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood”

O

n Saturday August 4th Masjid Nu’Man will host its 22nd Annual “Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood” Community Walk and Carnival. For nearly three decades Masjid Nu’Man has invested in servicing the community at large along the Fillmore Ave corridor on the East side of Buffalo. The concept of putting the “Neighbor” back in the hood started to combat the concept that living in the “Hood” experiencing thug life, violence, drugs, debris and disrespect was a badge of honor?! Being a “good neighbor” not only comply with Islamic and religious principles, it also reflects the motto of the City of Buffalo. Prior to our first walk Imam W. Deen Mohammed the son of The Honorable Elijah and Clara Mohammed challenged all those who supported his leadership to “Build Model Communities.” This effort was to be a collaboration not only amongst Muslims but to work with all good people who are stakeholders in the community. The goal was to work with neighbors, block clubs, business, elected officials, police and fire departments, as well as religious Imam Fajri and community based organizations. ANSARI Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood promotes family life and respect for parents. The African American community has a historical legacy of neighbors looking out for one another that was more than the slogan “It takes a village to raise a child.” Many of those traditional values of “respecting all adults, respecting all mothers, taking care of your own property, putting in a full hard day’s work to provide for your family” are being challenged. The feeling of entitlement and the lack of self-responsibility is counterproductive to “Building Model Communities.” We value and congratulate all the families and block clubs who are holding on to the legacy and values by keep their block and neighborhood intact. We feel that it’s important that houses of worship interact and get to know the neighbors in their community where they are located. Most religious organizations have the ability to advocate and facilitate valuable information to its neighbors concerning education, health, employment opportunities and or how to work with the City to address neighborhood concerns and issues. We invite those who share in being good neighbors and creating healthy environments to grow and cultivate our future generations to come walk with us! On Saturday August 4th, we will meet in Martin L. King Park at the statue near the Rose Garden at 11:00 a.m. We will walk along Fillmore Ave. to Box Ave. Games, refreshments, rides and entertainment will be held at the Box Ave. Playground until 5pm.

15 Year Old Ahmad R. Pleasant Shocks The Crowd at Buffalo’s Got Talent ! On Friday July 20th Ahmad R. Pleasant ,15 year old rising Saxophone enthusiast shocked the crowd during the final round of the 2018 Buffalo’s Got Talent competition! The competition is held annually as a way to show apfor the gifted individuals who populate the city. Out of over 70 contestants Ahmad proved victorious, rigorously playing his tenor saxophone stretching his musical capabilities even further for a winning performance while his faithful family who is always there to support him looked on. Raised in the city of Buffalo, Ahmad started the hobby of contemporary instrumental performance and the tender age of 5 years old with piano lessons from the late-great James “Pappy” Martin , which later evolved into tutelage from Gregory Treadwell afterwards. Following the footsteps of his older brother, a young trumpet performer by the name of Andrew Pleasant Jr., Ahmad felt as if he was destined to play saxophone to accompany him in the future. His brother was mentored by Clarence Lott; and Ahmad also received trumpet lessons, coaching, gaining further experience and performances through Mr.Lott . Ahmad’s family who fully supports his dream also found tutelage from the legendary Carol McLaughlin; an amazing band leader who found a passion in teaching the youth in the science of music through private lessons. Within a mere year and a half, Ahmad began to play with his older brother on multiple occasions and by the age of 8 become not only a member of the Larry Salter Soul Orchestra but the youngest member to ever join the Colored Musicians Club at the time. Now in high school receiving perfect scores and 1st Saxophone chairs in every Erie County competition he’s ever entered, Ahmad has also found like-minded peer to play a band called The Progressions, and currently in the process of making an album named Project 148. Congratulations Ahmad!

White Supremacists Plan Rally in D.C. The National Park Service has approved an initial request for organizers to hold a second "Unite the Right" rally, this time across the street from the White House in August — one year after White supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, Va. The National Park Service park service has the approval for Jason Kessler to hold a "white civil rights rally" on Aug. 11 and 12, in the nation’s capital. Kessler, along with White supremacist Richard Spencer and others, organized the 2017 rally, during which a woman was killed. The park service has not yet issued a permit for the event. The rally in Charlottesville last year drew hundreds of White nationalists and supporters who faced off in clashes with counterprotesters. A self-described neo-Nazi drove a car into a crowd of anti-racist protesters, killing 32-yearold Heather Heyer and injuring more than a dozen others.

"Yakety Yak": Old School Lyrics For Modern Day Parenting

W

e come to you as school ends and summer is in full force. As parents and grandparents, it can be a challenge to transition from having teachers and school as primary care takers of our school aged children generally from September to June. We might feel like...Now what?!! Who ARE these people? Why are they in my house? When did they grow so big AND What is this "Talking Back" all about? You probably remember that I have been a Family Court Attorney for the past 30 years and, yes I think I HAVE seen and heard just about EVERYTHING! But I've ALSO done a little substitute teaching in the Buffalo PubKatie lic Schools over the last several years. With HARROD these experiences I have seen the parenting issues from all sides. As a Mom and Grandma and as one who clearly remembers the Old School ways of raising children...there have been some massive changes! The advent of the 1960's was the beginning of enormous change. For that reason I want to take you back to a simpler more direct and effective time of parenting. The 1920's through the 1950's when my parents and grandparents were bringing up children was a whole different era and way of looking at life. A funny illustration of my point is in the lyrics of the famous 1958 song Yakety Yak by the Coasters... a young teen is told: Take out the papers and the trash Or you won't get no spending cash If you don't scrub that kitchen floor You Ain't gonna Rock & Roll no more! Yakety Yak! (DONT TALK BACK!!) Just finish cleaning up your room Let's see that dust fly with that broom Get all that garbage out of sight Or you don't go out Friday Night! Yakety Yak! (DON'T TALK BACK!!) You just put on your coat and hat And walk yourself to the Laundromat And when you finish doing that Bring in the Dog and put out the Cat Yakety Yak! (Don't Talk Back!!) Don't you give me no dirty looks Your Father's hip he knows What cooks Just tell your hoodlum friend Outside... You Ain't got time to take a ride! Yakety Yak! (Don't Talk Back!!) There are so many good parenting lessons embedded in these brilliant lyrics! Suffice it to say, children need to respect authority. They need to have the structure of regular chores around the house. They need to know Mom AND Dad are looking out for them in checking the friends they are hanging out with. Children need swift, consistent consequences for poor behavior. Give them loving, encouragement for a job well done...along with good work ethics! (take out trash = spending cash) Let's take some Old School advise from our Elders to see a turn around in this new generation. We can ask God to help us with His infinite wisdom; to raise our next generation to not just survive, but to Thrive! Have a great Summer...until next time...I can be reached at Thechallengernews.com or Katieharrodlaw@ yahoo.com

T

Justice Under Attack!

here has always been an attack on the ideals of justice in America by the Powers that Be when it came to dealing with any challenges of equality or equity for citizens who were not of the power elite i.e., White male slave and land owners. Now, more than any other time in history not only are the principles of justice under attack and violated at every turn, but there is a conscious, systematic assault on any idea that proposes even the semblance of justice, fairness, equity or equality. Any fight for the rights of Black people is met with antagonism and opposition. Of course, in the past, when there were such attacks on Justice, in America, it was usually deflected to a specific group of people within the American social construct, to show that it wasn’t only against Black people. Now, if you are identified as a non-white or a person of color, whether you self identify or not, you are the sole target and then everybody else gets targeted after you have been neutralized, murdered or imprisoned. Restorative Justice now is under special attack because it is the very means and methodology that could save whole generations of people of color and everybody else who might be brave enough to embrace it. To give you an example of how focused and intentional these attacks are, in May I participated in a radio talk show, hosted by The Honorable Betty Jean Grant, on a Black radio station owned by another Black Woman, Sheila Brown. During that segment of Mrs. Grant’s show as we talked about restorative justice as soon as I said that restorative justice was a social ideal that came out of Ancient Kemit, Africa, the place that Europeans called Egypt, someone called in screaming that restorative justice came from Native American, indigenous people’s culture and that I did not know what I was talking about. That attack came as a result of me attributing a science that

11

Part I of a 2-part Series

was developed and used by Black people for thousands of years before there even was an America, with an indigenous population, that unbeknownst to the caller also came from Africa before there was any place called Europe. But that reflects the same thinking and false history that has been told, and taught in our schools, for more than fifty years about the location of Egypt and who the Egyptian people Baba were in terms of location and racial identity. We’ve known for years White folks lied ENG and said that Egypt was not in Africa and that the ancient Egyptians were White people. Hollywood even went so far as to promote that lie by exclusive portrayals of the Ancient Egyptians as White people, using White actors like Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor etc. to portray the Ancient Egyptians as White, using White actors who couldn’t even be made up to look like the original “Egyptians.” That being aside, the danger is present because I also referenced the research that concluded that the majority of white teachers coming from the suburbs of America to teach Black and Brown children in the inner cities of America does not work for the children and is actually toxic. Not only do those White teachers not look like or identify in any way with children of color, but they actively participate in targeting our children with charges of misbehavior based on their inability to understand even the most common behaviors and language of children of color and therefore use disciplinary and suspensions as a first response to our children who only need to be heard and related with, and to, as human beings, instead of being targeted and labeled. (Part 2 Conclusion Next Week)

Majority Leader Baskin Tackles Foreclosure, Trump Antics, Death of India Cummings

A

s the Erie County Legislature heads into its summer recess, April N. M. Baskin looks back on her first six months as Majority Leader. Since taking office in January, she has worked to pass major legislation and focused on criminal justice reform as her signature issue. In recent weeks, she has focused on preventing home foreclosures, and holding public officials accountable for the tragic death of India Cummings. “Foreclosure auctions take a devastating toll on individual homeowners, and neighborhoods. Families lose shelter and the years of equity they have put into the home,” noted Baskin. “And the problem of vacant and abandoned properties in Erie County is made worse. The tragedy is that residents who are struggling to make ends meet can lose their homes over relatively small amounts of money.” The New York State Mortgage Assistance Program, or MAP, provides residential homeowners up to $40,000 in 30-year, no interest loans to prevent foreclosures and will reimburse the county for unpaid taxes. Baskin worked with her fellow legislators to pass a resolution that will allow local service organizations that processes MAP applications to submit an affidavit that an applicant has been pre-screened and is eligible for the program. This resolution is already in effect, so homeowners who are at risk of losing their homes can apply before the next foreclosure auction, which is scheduled for September. If you are at risk of losing your home, please go to nysmap.org for information to apply for the program. As committee of the Public Safety Committee, Baskin has made criminal justice reform her number one priority. She held a series of round tables this past spring, focusing on the need for bail reform, sentencing disparities and alternatives to solitary confinement. And the death of India Cummings has strengthened her resolve to reform Erie County’s jails. “The tragic death of India Cummings demonstrates the failure of our jails, and why we desperately need to reform how they are managed,” said Baskin. “I hosted a special meeting of the Public Safety Committee last week to review the report from the Com-

mission of Corrections. I brought together Sheriff Tim Howard, Health Commissioner Gail Burstein and Commissioner of Mental Health, Michael Ranney. Although we could not discuss the specifics of her death due to pending litigation, we were able to uncover several policies that the Sheriff and Commissioner of Mental Health admitted, on the record, could be improved and strengthened. We must continue the necessary work to prevent another person from dying on our watch.” Baskin is providing an opportunity for community members to make their voices heard. She will be holding a meeting next week at the Delavan Grider Community Center. Basking pledges to use the community’s input as she develops resolutions and local laws to reform the jail system in Erie County. Baskin also stood up to President Trump and his opposition to a World Health Organization resolution that called on governments to “protect, promote and support breastfeeding.” There are a number of lactation rooms in county offices, and women have the option to breastfeed while on county property. Finally, Baskin was proud to stand with representatives from labor to voice her support for public sector unions, and pledged to work with them as they organize in the wake of the troubling Janus decision, which could weaken the power of unions and protections for employees. She also voted to enhance the senior citizen property tax exemption and to provide an allowance for disabled veterans. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.

SKATE DON'T HATE! The Women Against Violence Everywhere (W.A.V.E.) and 716 Rollers hosted a free "Skate Don't Hate" event in MLK Park June 2 that included food, swimming, performances, a clothing giveaway, DJ's and outdoor skating for the entire family. Hats off to Marilyn Young and her crew and their partners & sponsors including Mayor Brown, Council Members Wingo, Pridgen, Wyatt and Fontna - for a true "outing with a meaning" for our youth!
