Anna Murray Douglass and Daughter Annie Douglass to be Honored with Cemetery Memorials at Mount Hope Cemetery
The one and only 12-time Grammy award win ner Babyface will be making his Rochester debut on the Saturday evening portion of the festival which takes place inside Frontier Field. “We wanted to make him a priority,“ explained promoter Varick Biayina of Experience Events, LLC who is handling the event for the fourth consecutive year. “He’s had a big resurgence where he’s putting out a brand new album, ‘Girls Night Out,’ which features top up and coming R&B female artists. He’s very relevant and it’s an honor to have him.”
It’s the end of the summer which means it’s time for the 2022 Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival which returns to Frontier Field on August 26 and 27, with a special third day added on the 28 at MLK Park.
Also appearing at the Saturday show will be blue-eyed soul man Jon B and the irrepressible Lyfe Jennings, while former Eastman School of Music student and violinist Kostia Lukyniuk will be flying in from the Ukraine to perform a 30 minute show of solidarity for that embattled country. Exceptional local talent will also be showcased with three-time Grammy nominee saxophonist Jim mie Highsmith and Na$a featuring Mikki Ladawn and Amir Daze.
The weekend kicks off 5 PM Friday, August 26, with the Tailgate Party at Frontier Field’s Vip Lot which will feature DJ’s paying tribute to top R&B bands. Saturday opens at 10am with a free community block party, job fair and back 2 school give away before the main show at 5 PM. The festival concludes on August 27, with Roc Jam Live at MLK Park which will showcase some of the Roc’s best DJ’s. Head to rocsummersoulfest. com for tickets and more info.

The memorials are intended to recognize the relationship be tween Frederick, Anna, and Annie and provide a tribute to both The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery for stewarding the gravesite for the past 30 years along with educator and activist Dr. David Anderson for his unrelenting spirit in retelling the Douglass story.
Rochester, NY -- Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI) and Rochester Area Community Foundation are pleased to announce the cer emony to memorialize long time Rochester resident and freedom fighter Anna Murray Douglass and her daughter Annie Douglass with individ ual grave markers to be un veiled to the public at Mount Hope Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022. The event features Doug lass descendants Nettie Wash ington Douglass and Kenneth B. Morris Jr., Rochester May or Malik Evans, and other dignitaries and special guests. September 3rd commemo rates the day in 1838 that Frederick Douglass sought his freedom with aid of his future wife and mother of his children and this year marks 127 years since Anna Mur ray Douglass was reinterred at Mount Hope Cemetery after her body was moved from its original burial site in Washington, D.C. Mother and daughter were buried at the historic cemetery in 1895 and 1860, respectively, but never had individual memorials to denote their burial place -- instead sharing a monument with Frederick Douglass. These new mark ers will highlight the critical work of Anna’s contribution to the fight for equality -- a hallmark of the Douglass family legacy.

The Community Foundation provided a $15,000 grant to support this important project. “Visitors to the Douglass family burial site will now have an opportunity to recognize and contemplate the worthy legacy of Anna Murray and Annie Douglass,” said Simeon Banister, executive vice president at the Community Foundation. “Our historic preservation grants preserve the rich stories of our community in order to transmit important lessons to future generations. We are grateful to the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives for their invitation to join in preserving this remarkable part of our community’s history.”

Erie County Legislature Chairwoman April N. M. Baskin took the lead on changing training and procedures for 911 call-takers and establishing an online complaint form after calls to 911 were disconnected during the May 14th mass shooting and during a birthday party for one of the survivors on May 22nd.“When someone is reaching out for help during an emergency, they need to speak with someone who has the training and experience to assist them,” said Erie County Legislature Chair April N. M. Baskin. “It is clear that the system failed some of the individuals who called for help on May 14th and 22nd. Al though help ultimately arrived thanks to the persistence of the callers, no one who is in a crisis should have to make multiple calls for help.”

“If successful, the lawsuit would require the city to de stroy all records of a misconduct complaint against an of ficer unless the department’s Internal Affairs Division finds the officer guilty,” writes Investigative Post reporter Geoff Kelly.“That would eliminate records of almost all complaints and the investigations into them, because Internal Affairs hardly ever finds officers guilty.”

Baskin held several meetings with Emergency Services Commissioner James Jancewicz about these disconnected calls. During these meetings, Jancewicz revealed that calls are often disconnected by call-takers if the emergency the resident is calling about has already been documented. In addition, the system does not currently track calls by zip code. Baskin believes that it doesn’t matter if the emergency happening has already been documented, callers should be offered an explanation as to why their call will be disconnected. She also encourages the public to submit a complaint if they believe their call was not handled appropriately. The form will allow for the analysis of the data by zip code, which she will use to determine if additional training or policies need to be implemented.

Investigative Post reports that the Buffalo Police Benev olent Association, in it’s efforts to “put a lid “ on the release of officer’s disciplinary records, has filed a lawsuit against the City of Buffalo asking a judge to order the city to honor an arbitrator’s decision curtailing the public’s right to learn about allegations of police misconduct.

Attorney Elmore, who is suing the gun industry on be half of victims of the Tops Supermarket mass shooting was recently profiled for his exceptional work in the August 7 edition of the Washington Post.
St. Brian Clothiers recently partnered with Buffalo Tal ent and Fashion Week to produce a special fashion show that took place underground on the NFTA Train line from Robert Traynham Coles Utica Station to Fountain Plaza. This event was designed to use fashion as an expressive tool in recognition of the International Day of Remem brance of and Tribute to the Vic tims of Terrorism, on August 21, 2022, as declared by the United Nations.Mayor Brown joined members in theThecommemoration.modelswerestyled in vin tage, period clothing, inspired by the terrorist attack on Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK. On that day, May 31, 1921, evil descended upon the prosperous and thriving Black community when, following a false rumor that a Black man had assaulted a White woman in an elevator, a White mob murdered hundreds of residents and an aerial bombing destroyed 35 square blocks of 1,200 homes and the business district. And at least 4,000 Black Greenwood residents were arrested and placed in internment camps by the Oklahoma National Guard. Last Sunday men from the Buffalo Talent and Fashion carried photos on the train to Fountain Plaza depicting the Tulsa terrorist attack and victims as well as images from the Tops supermarket massacre.“Itisimportant to tell the stories of what terrorism has done to both of our cities and communi ties and build bridges for the victims who are suffering from it to find support in one another,” said organizer Dewitt Lee, owner of St. Brian Clothier fine men’s wear. “We also want to ensure that when the world talks about terrorism attacks that they consider what White domestic terrorism is and how long Blacks around the world have suffered from it."
“It’s the fox watching the chicken coop when it comes to Internal Affairs,” Garry Connors, who won a $600,000 judgment against the city over the 2009 shooting death of his son, told Investigative Post for that story. Commissioner Jancewicz has worked with Chairwoman Baskin on implementing four new training programs for call-takers in the E911 office. These trainings will focus on racial sensitiv ity and implicit bias training as well as offering a refresher on proper procedure that will include role-playing. All call-takers will be required to take these new courses. Bessie Coleman was the first African-American woman to obtain an interna tional pilot's license. But as a Black woman in the 1920s, she faced many obstacles be cause of her race and gender. Every flight school in Amer ica rejected her because she was Black and a woman. She eventually earned her inter national pilot's license on June 15, 1921, within a year of enrolling in a flight school in France.Whenshe returned to the United States in 1922 as an aerial acrobat, Coleman amazed Black and White audiences with her daredevil feats. Known as "Queen Bess" and "Brave Bessie," she would do loops, barrel rolls, and figure eights in her plane-she'd even walk on the wings and parachute out. She also used her fame to fight racism and segrega tion, refusing to fly in shows that forced Black and White spectators to enter through separate gates. On April 30, 1926 she died in a plane, leaving an imprint on aviation history but never having fulfilled her dream of opening a flight school for future Black pilots. This week an all-Black female crew operated an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Phoenix in honor of Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman to carry a pilot's license in 1921. The airline hosted the Bessie Coleman Avia tion All-Stars tour this week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Coleman performing the first public flight by an African American woman in 1922.

Add your cancer screenings to your summer calendar. Too many cancers are being found late — when they are harder to treat and more deadly — because of missed cancer screenings. The best cancer screening is the one you get. It could save your life.
If you’ve delayed your cancer screening or doctor’s visits or are ignoring that lingering symptom that is just not right — now is the time to act.

The COVID-19 pan demic created a detour for some people when it came to getting regular cancer screenings, but now it’s time to get back to the main road of health.The11th annual Cruisin’ for a Cure Buffalo-Niagara, set for Saturday, September 24 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the campus of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Cen ter, is the on-ramp to get back on thatNicknamedroad. the “car show that saves lives,” the event combines a day-long car, truck and motorcycle show with ac cess to free prostate cancer early detection tests courtesy of Roswell Park. “Car clubs have been very supportive of the event, with some members taking ad vantage of the free prostate check. We have the OGs out of Niagara Falls; Roc-HardVette Club from Rochester; Drifters Car Club and The Old Cranks Car Club. We’ll also have support from the East side Classics of East Buffalo and the Southern Tier Auto Buffs (STAB),” says Richard Satterwhite, a Patient Engage ment Specialist at Roswell Park. He’s also a co-founder of Men Allied for the Need to Understand Prostate Cancer (MANUP) Buffalo, Inc., an educational outreach group that talks with men and their partners about the importance of regular health checkups and routine early detection tests,
Richard Satterwhite Part I including for prostate cancer. Satterwhite also is a prostate cancer survivor, diagnosed at age 44 with an aggressive case. He knows firsthand the importance of early detection and regular screenings. “Most of the time, guys will ignore symptoms, if there are any,” he says. “I had symp toms, ED and difficulty emp tying my bladder, which are common indicators that some thing’s wrong. I spoke with my doctor immediately and got in for a blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE) and they found something which proved to be cancer. In most cases, it’s a slow-growing cancer, but sometimes it doesn’t pres ent with symptoms. Regular check-ups are important. Go ing to see your doctor regular ly is something we all should do.” -Know Your RiskIt is recommended that men who have a higher risk for the disease, such as those with a family history of prostate can cer, are African American, or who have a known genetic mutation, begin their annual testing at age 40; all other men should begin their routine prostate cancer early detection testing at age 45. Men of color, including Black men and those of His panic/Latinx background, have a higher risk not only of developing prostate can cer, but of having a more ag gressive case of the disease.
“There’s no real understand ing as to why prostate can cer occurs. For some reason, anyone with high amounts of melanin in their system are disproportionally affected,” Satterwhite says. Prostate cancer is the sec ond leading cause of cancerrelated death among men 40 and older.Black men are 1.6 times more likely than other men to develop prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from the disease. It’s also the mostdiagnosed cancer in Hispanic men. However, when caught early, prostate cancer can be cured more than 90% of the time.

-Funk Fest WeekendBuffalo Funk Fest Week end breaks down like this:
Set up outside Mike’s Lounge on Jefferson Avenue a few weeks ago, Marnetta Malcolm was in her element selling red black and green inspired Funk Fest T-shirts and en gaging with her beloved community.Ayoung man walked by and stopped to admire the shirts. Marnetta urged him to “buy a T-shirt and smile.” He responded: "I can’t af ford it right now but that’s a good shirt to have." Then he smiled. “It really is.” Indeed. All the proceeds were going to support a very "funky" cause: the 2022 Buffalo Funk Fest, which has morphed and expanded into a three-day celebration this year in tribute to Buf falo’s own legendary Rick James and dedicated to the memory of one of Buffalo’s finest musicians, Jerry Liv ingston (who appeared on five of James’ albums and was a member of his Stone CityMarnetta,Band.) a true “commu nity champion,” is president of the Buffalo Funk Fest Foundation Inc. which is hosting the weekend along with promoters and produc ers Iris Boston and Benjam inee“IBoston.lovemy community,” declared Marnetta. “And we’re going to party like Rock“ThisStars!”atmosphere makes for a great party” she said surveying the Jefferson Avenue streetscape. “There used to be at least 20 busi ness on this block. But we can bring it back.”

Expungement vacates a criminal conviction, which is the same as if the arrest never happened. Once expunged, the conviction will no longer appear on a criminal background check and does not need to be disclosed when applying for a job, student loans or housing. The conviction record will be sealed and remain confidential except if applying for a pistol permit or employment with a law enforcement agency.

The Buffalo Bills were business as usual this week as they prepared to battle the Denver Broncos in a Week 2 preseason match up. High mark Stadium was filled with a lot of high notes on "Kids Day" as the Buffalo Bills would dismantle the Denver Broncos 42-15. Josh Allen's preseason debut was on display for "One Bills Drive" as he went 3-3 for 45 yards which included a 28 yard strike to Gabe Davis for a TD. End of business day for Josh Allen. I want to thank Case Keenum for read ing my letter from last week's article as he turned in a very astounding performance going 16-18 for 192 yards and a TD pass to OJ Howard. Matt Barkley would finish off the day completing 7 of 8 passes for 65 yards. The running game was able to produce 208 yards of offense. The 5 headed monster of Blackshear, Johnson, Cook, Moss, and Singletary produced 4 touchdowns as a unit and ran very well behind the offensive line led by Dion Dawkins, Mitch Morse, Rodger Stafford, Spencer Brown, and Ryan Bates. Khalil Shakir had another really good performance as he recorded 59 yards on three catches. Shakir is making a very good case that he should be WR4 as the regular season start is closing in. The offense would score six touchdowns in its first six possessions. Sounds like a great day at the office. The defense was very sticky for most of this game. The Broncos would only accumulate 32 yards of rushing. Andre Smith Jr would lead the team with seven tackles. The 7th round pick Baylon Spector also had seven tackles in this game and was all over the field once again making plays. As the preseason continues, I will be looking forward to seeing what players will separate themselves as shoe in roster guys. The players to watch on defense as far as I'm concerned would be guys like Christian Benford, Ter rel Bernard, and Mike Love. Next week, the Bills will visit the Carolina Panthers in a Week 3 preseason battle. Will we see more of the Bills starters? What positional battles will be figured out? What cuts will be made?
The first of two upcoming events for residents of Erie County who are interested in learning how to expunge or reduce marijuana-related convictions on their crim inal record by Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn.
“Now that New York State has legalized recreational canna bis, we must act on behalf of the people whose lives have been unfairly impacted by a marijuana-related conviction on their criminal record. In particular, African Americans have been disproportionally impacted by the criminaliza tion of cannabis, which has hindered their pursuit of certain opportunities in life. I hope to give a fresh start to our citi zens who have been living with these criminal convictions by offering legal support to expedite the expungement or re duction process,” said Flynn.
AND PUBLIC DEFENDERS TO HOST MARIJUANA CONVICTION EX PUNGEMENT CLINICS IN BUFFALO
A criminal record, even for a low-level marijuana-related of fense, can negatively impact an individual’s ability to access education, housing and employment. The purpose of these free informational sessions is to educate residents about eli gibility requirements and help those who are legally entitled to have marijuana-related convictions removed from their criminal record. Legal experts will be available to provide residents with information on recently enacted criminal laws and answer questions about the expungement process.

An Open Letter In Support of the Buffalo Public Schools Emmancipation Curriculum and the Department of CLRI
Come to the next meeting of PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC. on Monday, August 29 to understand WHYwe celebrate “Black August” every year. We will be at the CAO Rafi Green Masten Resource Center, 1423 Fillmore Avenue @ Glenwood in Buffalo, NY from 7:00 to 9:00pm.
So much is often said about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the philosophy of non-violence. We celebrate the King Holiday and school children are often required to learn his “I Have a Dream” speech. Some have been taught that he learned about non-violent re sistance from Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi or that he was influenced by Henry David Thoreau’s essay on Civil Disobedience. Nearing the end of his life, Dr. King expressed the following a year before his assassination, “...a riot is the language of the unheard.” Our history has shown that we resisted subjugation in so many ways since the beginning of our enslavement in the Western Hemi sphere, here in North America and throughout the Carib bean. There is historical documentation to support the fact that there were hundreds of Black rebellions, revolts, and uprisings for freedom in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Our children need to know about Gabriel Prosser, a black smith in Virginia, whose plan for the summer of 1800 intended to end slavery. They need to learn about Nat Turner who led a fight for freedom, also in Virginia, in 1831. Our classroom studies should include infor mation about the Haitian Revolution, (1791-1803) where enslaved and so-called free Blacks fought to gether against the French, resulting in Haiti’s becom ing the first Black independent nation in the Western Hemisphere. Our children’s knowledge and understanding of this is just as important as knowing about the importance of non-violent civil disobedience.
Nancy Pelosi nor Joe Biden see the world through other nations’ eyes. Why should they when they live by a belief in U.S. superiority? But they will repeat the process of undermin ing what they seek to preserve. Every failed attempt to assert U.S. strength leads other countries to form their own alliances in order to protect themselves. China and Russia are closer now than they have ever been thanks to invasions, coups, sanctions, and proxy wars which make the U.S. the enemy of most of the world. Other nations will follow their lead as U.S. desperation creates more crises. China is the master here, the mature and intelligent country willing to get along with others despite any differences. People who want peace and a just world must follow their lead as every U.S. president presents nothing but new opportunities for world wide mischief making. Nancy Pelosi is not alone in disregarding China. The Biden administration, the rest of con gressional leadership, corporate media, and opinion makers all disregard China because it is a non-white country. No mat ter. Ignorance of international law is no excuse, neither is U.S. willful ignorance of how great power politics is really played.
The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born on August 17. As far as I know, he did not advocate armed rebellion but he did say, “... there is much to live for, and there is much to die for. The man, the race of nation that is not prepared to risk life itself for the possession of an ideal, shall lose that ideal. If you, I repeat, must be free, you yourselves must strike the blow.” Our people always intended to be free. There were insurrections on the slave ships. Freedom was always on our minds and in our hearts. Enslaved Africans disrupted business as usual on the plantations by breaking tools, liberating tools and firearms, poisoning slave holders, running away, using disguises, forging documents, pretend ing an illness or disability and the list goes on. When we,

PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC., celebrate “Black August,” we are taking time to remember George and Jona than Jackson. George was first imprisoned at the age of 18. He authored two books while inside: SOLEDAD BROTH ERS and BLOOD IN MY EYE. He became an activist and a member of the BLACK PANTHER PARTY during the last 12 years of his life. His teenage brother, Jonathan, tried to free him on an August day in 1970 from San Quentin State Prison in California with a plan that failed, resulting in the deaths of both men. Since that time, “Black August” has been celebrated in prisons across the country.

We, The Buffalo Parent Teachers Board, fully support the work of the Department of Culturally and Linguistically Re sponsive Initiatives (CLRI) under the direction of Dr. Fatima Morrell.Thedepartment’s work to infuse culturally and linguistically responsive curriculum in our K-12 schools strengthens our District and our community as we pull together to combat prejudice and hatred directed towards our Black and Brown families. This award winning work is designed to uplift our students, building leadership and citizenship through pride of place and knowledge of our shared, true history. However, in our work with parents and community members, we are disturbed by language and com munications we have received that promote a culture of ex clusion, bigotry, and violence. Some of this white nationalist rhetoric originates outside our District while some, sadly, ap pears to be nestled within.

Nancy Pelosi at Tokyo press conference explaining her "connection" to China (Photo: Issei Kato/Reuters) White supremacist arrogance was the order of the day when Nancy Pelosi ignored a red line set by the Chinese government and visited Taiwan. The Speaker of the House showed stereotypical and racist attitudes towards that country and began a chain of events that won't go well for the U.S. “When I was a little girl, I was told at the beach if I dug a hole deep enough, we would reach Chi-na, so we've always felt a connection there." (Nancy Pelosi, August 5, 2022, in Tokyo, Japan) Nancy Pelosi is a member of the United States Congress. She isn’t just any member either, she is Speaker of the House of Representatives, an important leadership posi tion in U.S. politics. She is also third in line to the presidency. If something should happen to the President and Vice President she would lead the Executive Branch of government. Her position makes her statement about digging a hole to Chi na all the more disgraceful. It is an old trope which gives expres sion to China’s perceived otherness, that it isn’t just far away, it is actually the very opposite of how Americans see themselves in all their racist and exceptionalist glory. It wasn’t bad enough that Pelosi visited Taiwan in direct con tradiction to what the Chinese government asked. Despite this latest foreign policy debacle in the making, the U.S. still follows the One China Policy and has for the last 40 years. Xi Jinping’s direct request to Joe Biden that she and her entourage of House members skip the visit to Taiwan was ignored. Any claim of presidential impotence was nonsense, as the Speaker elited from a plane bearing the words United States of America, meaning that she had presidential approval to kick sand in China’s face. She made her unfortunate remarks about digging a hole while in Tokyo at the end of her multi-country Asian tour. Her insult ing words should be scorned but not before they are examined for their true meaning. Pelosi’s honesty is a reflection of the en tire country’s leadership. They have deemed China an adversary in large part because it is not a white nation. It was fine for China to open itself to capitalist trade and become a World Trade Orga nization (WTO) member that would supply Walmart with cheap products for American consumers. That role fit the supremacist narrative perfectly. Of course China took that ball and ran with it and now has an economy of comparable size and strength to that of the U.S. This prowess is not acceptable to a country which exudes white supremacy with its every domestic and foreign policy de cision. The U.S. insists upon being a hegemon and a white one at that. This identification as the leader of the entire planet makes concessions difficult. Every other country is seen as either a will ing vassal or an enemy to be destroyed. If the enemy is from the global south its position is automatically considered to be the inferior one and even a nation as prosperous as China is given the bum’s rush treatment. There is no other explanation for the recklessness which brought Nancy Pelosi, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks and others to try sneaking into Taiwan unno ticed. The trip had been postponed months earlier under the guise of Covid prevention. When it was rescheduled and the Chinese government made clear that red lines were being crossed Pe losi and company left the stop off of their official itinerary and showed up late at night. Racism is the only explanation for treating Xi Jinping and other government officials as if they are dumb. While Nancy thinks that retelling stupid and racist fables ex plains away her actions, China is taking real action and Taiwan is suffering. The island has effectively been blockaded by mili tary exercises, the country it depends upon for trade is depriving it of materials like sand, which is needed in its all important microchip production industry. Biden administration amateurs, fresh off their loss in Ukraine, have ignominiously repeated their Neitherfailure.
At the national level, school districts are combating state and local laws that limit curriculum, remove long standing award winning literature, target gay and trans students, and pit citizens against each other. We call upon Congress, statehouses, and school boards to reject the political manipulation of our schools and to protect the rights of all young people to access the books and the cur riculum they need and deserve. Many of the groups rallying to restrict curriculum appear to be homegrown but in fact, are covertly funded by national organizations that operate with a larger agenda and do not speak for the communities they claim to represent.TheBuffalo Parent Teacher Organization stands with the Buffalo Public School District in rejecting organized hatred and misleading rhetoric around Children’s and Young Adult literature and restricting language or curriculum meant to be inclusive and accepting of others, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, culture, and/or home language. We are proud of the cutting edge strides the District has made towards inclusion, the infusion of hard history, and cul tural competency and will continue to champion the Emanci pation curriculum and the Department of CLRI as we enter the 2022-23 school year. We hope that parents and community members will join us in our enthusiastic support of our District and our programming.
