Bills Training Camp Continues: Bills Fans Show Why They’re the Best in the NFL!

By Kim Phillips-Singleton As the summer season for 2022 nears an end, local Art ist Sherry Davis does her part in helping to highlight the re-emergence of this year’s Corn Hill Festival by making it one for the record books, and once again bring ing home, the ultimate prize of first place in the Mixed Arts Media division, for her local community of Rochester, New York! The festival’s 2-year absence, because of the world Covid pandemic, provided an opportunity to explore more of her affection as a Watercolor artist and further expand upon her portfolio to include mini portraits for attendees to acquire. Art has always been rejuvenating for Sherry and festivals provide another way to share her passion as an Artist, with the public. The idea of having artwork designed by her hands and made available to festival goers,’ is her way of ensuring the immaculate beauty of Rochester, NY will continue to live on. Sherry credits the sheer excitement of this year’s Corn Hill festival combined with her having another opportunity to display her artistic talent amongst others within her home environment for making it an unforgettable event. Sherry’s roots are embedded into the fabric of this society, and she feels privileged to call this area her home. She is a 1976 graduate of Sperry High School, and after dedicat ing 30 years of service to Rochester Products, she became a 2007 retiree of the company. Her newest profession as an Artist evolved out of her lifelong fondness for drawing and painting, which she no longer considers to be just a personal hobby. Art enthusiasts are always welcome to come in and enjoy Sherry’s paintings using the medium of watercolor at Studio 210 inside the Hungerford building, 1115 East Main Street, Rochester, New York, 14609. This location is also open every first Friday and second Saturday of each month and invites you to stop by and support all of Rochester’s local artists.

Rochester Artist Celebrates Festival’s Return!

The Buffalo Bills Training Camp continues to intensify with the quality of players increasing each day. The fight between Stefon Diggs and defensive end Greg Rousseau was a spirited tussle that led to both benches emp tying and a few punches thrown but was quickly brought un der control by the Bills coaching staff. It’s showing a team coming together to defend each other’s manhood on the field of play.Bills defensive tackle Jordan Phil lips said when asked about the fight, “I did not know he (Greg Rousseau) had it in him” in reference to his response to the tough physical play after the whistle. This is an aspect of training camp when you toughen some guys up in order to see what they are made of. Since the pads went on, the guys are starting to show their physicality like cornerback Siran Neal ‘s bone jarring hit on running back Devin Singletary. Bills rookie running back James Cook has some slick smooth moves but seems to run very high leaving his shoulders and chest areas exposed for possible contact by defenders. Cook is definitely in the plans of first year Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. I’m also im pressed by rookie undrafted free agent running back Raheem Blackshear’s explosive first step and hitting the hole with au thority along with keeping low to the ground. Blackshear is one of my diamonds in the rough players who could make the Buffalo Bills final roster or practice squad. I will predict right now Raheem Blackshear will be playing in the NFL for somebody.Theoffensive line is turning into a free for all for the back up positions with several candidates including last year’s second round draft pick Cody Ford. My starting five consists of Center Mitch Morse, left tackle Dion Dawkins, left guard, Ryan Bates, right tackle Spencer Brown, and right guard Rodger Saffold. Hopefully Saffold will have a speedy recovery from a rib injury after being involved in a car Thereaccident.are18 offensive linemen in camp. Hope fully some of these guys will standout in the upcom ing preseason games. Keep in mind former starters Ike Boettger is recovering from a ruptured Achilles suffered late last Continuedseason. page 13

Board of Education Meeting!

A Trailblazer Sign Dedication was unveiled at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Cherry Street in honor of Katherine 'Kat' Massey before a large gathering of family friends and dignitaries on July 29. It was hosted by Betty Jean Grant and her daughter Sherry Sherrill of We Are Women Warriors in honor of the beloved "Kat" who was among the ten cherished members of the East Side community gunned down by a racist White supremacist in Tops Market on May 14. A frequent contributor to The Challenger, Kat was a "quiet warrior" who knew how to get things done, Ironically, her last submission was about the need for stronger gun control laws. Kat was a dedicated neighborhood and community activist. As a result of her efforts, for example, the concrete wall that lines the expressway near her home is adorned with African Adinkra Symbols. Many of those same images also grace the windows of the newly redesigned Tops Market where she and nine others made their heavenly transition. Some of her family members are pictured in the top photo and her sister Barbara, above, delivered a heartfelt thank you to the community on behalf of the family. Rest in Peace Kat. Harambee! Local community groups and leaders held a press conference on the steps of the Wiley Pavilion last Thursday to discuss the need for a strong Commu nity Benefits Agreement (CBA) regarding the Buf falo Bills new $1.4 billion Stadium.Organizers released the following“Taxpayersstatement:are being saddled with $850 million dollars to invest into build ing a new Bills stadium in Orchard Park. In addition to the pleasure of watching the Buffalo Bills play football here for the next 30 years, there needs to be tangible benefits with actual deliv erables to our community. Negotiations began exactly one week ago between Erie County, New York State, and the Buffalo Bills. The community has been absent in these conversations and will also forgo the negotia tions, but how do you have a Community Benefits Agree ment without community? The community is coming together to demand a CBA that truly benefits the resi dents of our region and that community plays a role in decision making processes regarding of how said com munity benefits are provided and determined. “ Concerned citizens said they want the agreement to include items like a "com munity investment fund," public transportation to and from the stadium, and mon ey for youth athletics and mentor programs.

Summertime and Matters of the Heart

The heart is one of the main organs associated with summer (the others are small intestine, gums, tongue, blood vessels and blood) Our heart beats on average 100,000 times a day and 3 billion times in a 70-year life span. The center of compassion, our heart stores the spirit, reflected in the brightness of the eyes, and is associated with insight love, faith, and creativity. An imbalance in the heart may cause insomnia, over excitability, vivid dreams, seizures, excess or lack of emotion. The emotion associated with the heart is joy (or absence of joy), the taste is bitter ness, the sound is laughter and the order is burning. Western medicine now acknowledges a connection between periodontal disease, chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis and heart disease, Chinese physicians had figured this out centuries ago, viewing each of them as being related to a fire imbalance.

“This is a unique and historic moment for many reasons, given that Judge Pridgen is the first woman to serve as City Court Chief Judge and that Judge Wilson is the court’s first LGBTQ+ member,” he said. “And at this time, more than ever, our courts must look like and reflect the communities they serve, and have members who put the law before politics. That is a guiding principle for ECDC as we make our 2022 judicial nominations. “I also want to thank our Judicial Advisory Council for their guidance and diligence in helping maintain the highest standard of judicial excellence,” Zellner added. Pridgen graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2002 and Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2006. Davis earned his undergraduate degree at Western Il linois University before attending law school at UB, where Wilson also studied law after graduat ing from Cornell University. The candidates will appear on the Tuesday, Nov. 8 general election ballot.

The Erie County Democratic Par ty recently nominated incum bent judges JaHarr S. Pridgen, Gary A. Wilson Jr., and Samuel P. Davis for Buffalo City Court bench. Pridgen, formerly an assistant dis trict attorney elected to City Court in 2015, was sworn in as the Court’s first woman chief judge on July 1 after being named to that position by Mayor Byron W. Brown. When elected in 2015, she was the young est City Court jurist. Although City Court judges hold 10-year terms, Pridgen must run in 2022 for a full term under her new title. Davis, an attorney in private practice, and Wilson, principal law clerk to Supreme Court Judge John Licata, were both appointed by Mayor Brown to the Court last Friday to fill the vacancies created by Pridgen’s promotion and Judge Betty Calvo Torres’ appointment to the state Court of Claims. “Our party and our community are fortunate to have such a deep and diverse bench of judicial talent on tap for moments like this,” said Democratic Chair Jeremy J. Zellner. “Each in their own right have already proven themselves outstanding members of the legal community.

"Well bless God we are back"! said creator Dr. Anita Williams who brings the event back home in the entire Martin Luther King Park August 20 and 21.

Award-winning actor, director, and educator Stephen McKin ley Henderson will deliver a talk about his career and how he participated in the U.S. Department of Education’s Upward Bound program as a high school student in Kansas City, Kansas, during Buffalo State College’s Upward Bound banquet on Thurs day, August 11, at 7:00 p.m. Henderson will present the keynote address at the event cel ebrating local high school students who completed the six-week Up ward Bound summer program at Buffalo State. The banquet begins at 7:00 p.m., preceded by mocktails at 6:00 p.m., in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall. Upward Bound, now in its 36th year at Buffalo State, enables qualified ninth- through 12th-graders at McKinley, Lafayette, and East high schools to receive tutoring, personal develop ment workshops, and help with career planning. Throughout the summer, students live in Buffalo State residence halls and take a full slate of core academic classes with certified Buffalo Public Schools teachers. Every year as part of the celebratory banquet, Upward Bound organizers select a recipi ent of the Hal D. Payne Educational Opportunity Lifetime Service Award who also delivers the keynote address. This year they selected Henderson. “We chose to honor Stephen because of his wide range of stage and film work that speaks so eloquently to the African American experience,” said Donald Patterson, who has served as the director of Buffalo State’s Upward Bound program since 2001. “And Henderson was an Upward Bound student himself decades ago, which ultimately led to his theater career.”

A professor emeritus and former chair of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Theatre and Dance, Henderson also taught at the Juilliard School and Fordham University. Henderson garnered several awards over his storied career, including the 2015 Obie Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Walter “Pops” Washington in the productions of the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Between Riverside and Crazy and the Drama Desk Award for his role of Turnbo in August Wilson’s play Jitney. He also received a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Jim Bono in the Broadway revival of Wilson’s Fences, starring Denzel Washington. “It’s an understatement to say he serves as a great source of inspiration to current Upward Bound students,” Patterson said. On average, 90 percent of students who participate in Upward Bound go on to college; many enroll at Buffalo State. And the future looks bright. Buffalo State received a $2.3 million grant this month from the U.S. Department of Education to fund Upward Bound for the next five years.

Her most re cent book, launched during this event, is Marvella Finds Her Magic which the author designed to target children's imagination. "In the book," says Annette, “Mar vella and her mom move into Tia Mari sol’s house, which is in my East side neighborhood in Buffalo! Marvella and her mother move from Brooklyn to Buffalo because Marvella’s parents are getting a divorce. “I felt kids could relate to a story of being uprooted from the home you know to a home you don’t. It’s hard being the new kid in town, especially as an Afro-Latina moving to an unfamiliar place,” she said Not only is Marvella the new kid, she soon discovers she can talk to animals. This is Daniels Taylor’s eighth book, and her third with New York City Publisher West 44 Books. Other recent releases include the young adult novels, Shoot the Storm and the award-winning young adult novel Dreams on Fire. Written in verse. These novels explore juvenile justice through the eyes of East side teenagers Aaliyah and Shanequa. They will also be available at the August 24 event hosted by Zawadi Books and presented by Just Buffalo. Literary Center Civil Writes Project.

Proceeds from the artwork sales will benefit future scholarships through the Daniels Family Legacy Fund. Breonna Taylor was an award-winning EMT and model citizen. She loved her family and community, working at two hospitals as an es sential worker during the pandemic. On March13, 2020 a division of the Louisville Police Department performed an illegal, unannounced drug raid on her home, executing a discriminatory, botched noknock warrant. Not a single officer announced themselves before ramming down her door and firing 22 shots, shooting Breonna 6 times, killing her. Officer Joshua Jaynes lied to obtain the no-knock warrant on Breonna’s residence. No one has been held accountable for the systemic failure that caused Breonna’s death. Until now. The Department of Justice has announced federal criminal charges against four former and current Louisville police of ficers over their roles in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor who was brutally shot and killed in her own home by the police. “Breonna Taylor should be alive today,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in announcing the charges, which in clude unlawful conspiracy, use of force and obstruction of justice. The charges come after the state of Kentucky failed to pros ecute any police officers for Taylor’s death, despite nation wide Black Lives Matter demands to investigate. Local activists and members of Taylor’s family celebrated the charges and thanked federal officials. Supporters gath ered in a downtown park and chanted: “Say her name, Bre onna Taylor!”

Dear editor: The first annual New State Alumni Retirees Reunion, was held at the Grapevine Banquet Hall, Cheektowaga, NY, on Saturday, June 25, 2022. A variety of Alumni Law Enforcement Personnel and Friends attended the banquet. Ivy Wilson, Craig Powell, and Sabu Adeyola all expounded on their careers in law enforce ment and how they were grateful for their experience and endured to their retirement. Congratulations to all the New York State Alumni Retirees. We look forward to celebrating our 2nd Annual New York State Alumni Reunion in 2023. All are welcome to attend! The zip codes that are included, are some of the poorest, poverty stricken areas in the City of Buffalo. If the state had used all of the zip codes east of Main Street or East Buffalo areas, such as Larkinville, all of South Buffalo and the Bennett High School/ St Joseph School section of the city would have been included. With grants that can run as high as $30,000, any homeowner, with an income of 90% of the median income and lives at the house as their primary residence, is qualified to ap ply for the grant. Also, prospective homeowners may be eligible for grants as much as $30,000 to assist in down payment or other expenses associated with becoming a homeowner in Buffalo. The same East side zip codes are used to qualify for this assistance as well. Another component of this multi- million dollars Eastside housing assistance program is that it allows the homeowner to use the funds to pay delinquent property taxes, water bills and user fees. The funds can also be used to address housing code violations and other fees associated with owning and maintain ing aThishouse.federal and state's pot of money is sorely needed in Buffalo's much neglected and ignored Eastside communities. But the sad fact remains that it took the Tops Supermarket Mas conditions in the community. Demand more police ac countability. We have forgotten the law of the Heavenly Father, just like our elected leaders have forgotten the law and their duty as elected officials, to serve the people and not the other way around. Back to the ‘cocaine in cops pocket” event. I still can’t believe I witnessed a cop pull out his pocket evidence, that should have been properly secured and processed. To Mayor Brown, Common Council members, police commissioner and chiefs, what kind of crap are officers running on the streets of Buffalo? Where did the C Dis trict officer get the drugs from? Will they be used to plant on innocent people? This is just one example why many in the BLACK COMMUNITY have a great distrust of law enforcement. Our Black elected officials today are not like those of the past when they were strong and for the people. Too many of today’s politicians have forgotten who they were elected to represent. They get in office and then get it twisted and act as though we owe them – when it’s actu ally the other way around. They somehow forget that they were elected to serve the people who voted them into the office. They forget that the power is in the people! Sadly many of us are confused about that too, as evidenced in the fact that we keep reelecting those who need to be voted OUT! Hopefully one day soon we will see men and wom en who want to run for office because they sincerely want to serve and represent the people and not the money backers! Race First my people! “This is a day when Black women saw equal justice in Amer ica,” the family's attorney Benjamin Crump said. Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, said she has waited nearly 2 1/2 years for police to be held accountable. “Today’s overdue, but it still hurts,” she said. The Justice Department is also conducting a non-criminal in vestigation of the Louisville Police Department, announced last year, that is probing whether the department has a pattern of using excessive force and conducting unreasonable search and seizures. -MilesHowApart-“canit be that the federal government and state gov ernment are so far apart on this case?” says Sadiqa Reynolds, president and CEO of the Louisville Urban League, who calls the federal charges “a great step in the right direction.” Reynolds is demanding an investigation into Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s prosecution of the case — which she says was either “incompetent” or “in collusion” with the police. The grand jury's decision in 2020 to bring no direct charges against officers in 26-year-old Taylor's killing ignited resent ment, disappointment and a wave of criticism against Cameron, the state's first Black attorney general, as he tried to tamp down the outrage and what he referred to as "mob justice." Cameron, a Trump supporter, is planning to run for govenor of Kentucky in 2023. He has already received a "complete and total endorsement"from Trump.

Department of Justice Charges Cops for Breonna Taylor’s Killing. Family is grateful. But Why Didn’t Kentucky’s Black Attorney General Do the Same?

On Friday, July 22,2022 I happened to be in the Bailey and Genesee area, when I witnessed a police traffic stop. Ev erything was as abnormal as usual when it comes to police traffic stops here on the East Side of Buffalo; i.e. Police ransack ing the car looking for something not there, or something they planted themselves. During the stop I saw three Black men come out of three separate police cruisers and get back into their vehicle. So was the car clean? My guess was yes, but then the strangest thing happened. Before it was all over one of the officers from the C district, pulls something out of his pocket and says “rock cocaine! “ What type of police investigation was that? A cop pulls cocaine out of his pocket and tells us to film it?! His arrogance towards the members of the Black com munity who witnessed it, was obvious. Why would a cop reach into his pocket and reveal the drugs? What kind of officers do the city have patrolling our streets? During the traffic stop none of the cops on the scene were Black. So now you have an occupying army garrison ing the Black community. It’s a sad feeling, knowing that as a taxpayer, you have to live in fear of the same people that you have to call for help. Who’s going to protect us from the cops! D. A. Flynn? Our elected Black misleaders who have said very little, if anything , about police reform. My people ,in light of the recent tragedy on the city’s East Side we have to be vigilant. The ball is in our court. Demand more!!! By Adelia M. Davis, DBA (candidate), MBA, BS in ED. East High School has been instrumental in preparing me for my life’s quest. The teachers, administrators and students played a tremendous role in guiding me in my career in edu cation. In my senior year we moved out of East High School district, and I would have had to attend the high school located in the district that I moved to. I pleaded with my mother not to change our address with the dis trict so I could graduate from East High School. I am so grateful that I was able to graduate from East High School. I count it a blessing to see our 50-year reunion. In 1972, we were the first 18-year-olds to gain the right to vote. Mrs. Shirley Chisholm, the first African American Woman to run for President of the United States spoke to us new voters in the East High School library. As I listened to this short in statue, tiny woman, who looked like me, it gave me pride which enhanced my integrity, instilling in me strong moral principles and moral uprightness in the educational path I was to pursue. Today 50 years later, I am an ordained elder in the African Meth odist Church, have thirty-five years and counting with an accoun tant firm, a mentor to the next generation, and a Doctor of Business Administration Candidate at the University of North Carolina at Raleigh NC.

We will keep an eye on offensive linemen like Greg Van Roten (perfect football or WWE name), to veterans Greg Mancz and Bobby Hart along with the best of the rest. It’s time for Cody Ford to step up and win one of those back up positions. Western New York and all surrounding areas have the best football fans in the NFL. Buffalo Bills had 35,911 fans on a sultry summer night when the beach might have been a better place to be. Von Miller said it reminds him of a college town where everybody supports the team. I think Miller might be right on one thing everyone loves and supports the Buffalo Bills! Any money, regardless of how much or 'who brought home the bacon', is welcome and appreciated. We, who have been begging for years, for this kind of help to our Eastside community, hope that going forward, we are in the forefront of any initiative that will increase our civic pride and open opportunities where any citizen can purchase a home and secure an investment in their community that is more productive and rewarding than merely paying rent to a homeowner that, in any instances, does not even live in the city or the region. This great homeowner and housing improvement & reha bilitation initiative is ongoing now. Please call organizations such as PUSH Buffalo, Heart Of The City and the Community Action Organization for details on where to apply for these programs.
