win sisters and CEO’S Feven and Helena Yohannes, are founders of 241 Cosmetics. Originally from Eritrea, Africa and born in a refugee camp in Gibra, Sudan, their family made their way to the United States after being granted political asylum where they grew up in Rochester, New York. The sisters started out at city schools — No. 28, No. 46 and James Monroe Middle School — graduated from Brighton High School, worked as cashiers at the Pittsford Wegmans, earned degrees from competitive colleges, moved to California, launched careers in real estate sales and interior design and founded the makeup brand 2-4-1 Cosmetics, which late last year landed on Oprah Winfrey’s Favorite Things list. A set of six lip glosses that 2-4-1 was asked to develop just for Winfrey’s 2020 list, published in November’s O, The Oprah Magazine, Left to right: Cosmetics co-founders sold out almost immediFeven and Helena Yohannes. ately on Amazon. Items in regular inventory — cruelty-free, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeliners, eyeshadow and mascara — already had been selling out on the 2-4-1 website, thanks to a feature story that ran last July in InStyle magazine, which is what caught the attention of Winfrey’s people in the first place. Even before that, however, the siblings had picked up two A-list mentors: Helen Aboah, CEO of Urban Zen, the lifestyle brand of designer Donna Karan, and cosmetics mogul Bobbi Brown, who has referred to the duo as “the future of beauty.” “We like to think seeing our parent’s path from struggle to triumph completely influenced us as people and as founders,” says Helena. “They instilled the fundamental belief you lead with purpose, never forgetting your roots and always in service to others. The experiences and lessons they instilled in us as little twin girls would later play a pivotal role in our framework and brand ethos.” The goal with 241 Cosmetics is to create an effortless beauty brand that instills confidence, kindness and integrity. With their collection of color cosmetics, the duo is doing just that. “Beauty to us is grace and resilience. And we instill those lessons in our products through the names and product descriptions,” says Feven.
I, like many others, was totally shocked to see a potent offense shut down by a brilliant defensive game plan put together by Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. His defensive scheme constantly put pressure on Patrick Mahomes and forced him to run on his bad foot. You could tell that Mahomes’ foot injury continued to get worse as the game went on and a lack of a running game played right into the hands of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay offense. The Bucs softened up the already weak defensive unit against the run as Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones punished the Chiefs defenders. Tampa Bay, having a successful running game, was able to use play action in order to open up the passing game down field. Brady was able to throw touchdown passes to Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown. Tampa Bay linebacker Shaq Barrett said, “The way we came out there and played tonight offensively, defensively, special teams – we all did what we had to do to get the win. “ No touchdowns are unheard of for the Chiefs offense. If you told anyone they would not score a touchdown in the Super Bowl, you could have bet on that and won a lot of money. Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said, “The biggest thing was to cover up the receivers and make him hold the ball a little bit so our rush could get there.” On Tyreek Hill: “We had to make sure he didn’t beat us over the top and make sure we tackle him underneath. He’s an explosive receiver one of the best in the game, and our guys were up to the challenge and they played a heck of a game.” This was Patrick Mahomes first double digit loss in his four-year career. That’s an unbelievable stat on one of the best QB’s in the game today. It was also announced by media that Patrick Mahomes will have foot surgery sometime in the near future. Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said:“They had a good game plan. I can’t say the toe was a problem when I played on it two weeks ago and performed very well. Tampa Bay took away all of our deep stuff, took away the sideline, and they did a good job of rounding to the football and making tackles. They were the better team tonight.” That’s a good summary of Super Bowl LV and how Tampa Bay Buccaneers won in dominate fashion. My MVP’s for the game were of course Tom Brady and Defensive

Daniel's Law...
A group of lawmakers, Rochester activists and mental health professionals are proposing "Daniel's Law," a bill that, if passed, would amend public health law in New York state, establishing mental health response units that are trained to deescalate mental health and substance abuse emergency situations. Those units would allow mental health professionals to respond to mental health and substance abuse emergencies, instead of armed police officers. In addition, the legislation would create state and regional mental health response councils to develop responses to crisis situations.
Loretta C. Scott
City Council President Loretta C. Scott To Retire ; Celebrates Over 30 Years as Public Servant City Council President Loretta C. Scott recently announced she will not be running for re-election in 2021. After dedicating over 30 years of her career to the City of Rochester, President Scott has made the decision to retire from public service. “We are all like snowballs, the sum of our experiences collectively packed together over the years, and propelled forward by the hands of others." This is how I have felt as Council President – that I've been given the privilege of helping guide change for our City, and that so many have laid their hands on me to help me move in the right direction,” said President Scott of her career. President Scott has served three terms on the Rochester City Council, elected as President in 2014. Prior to her time on Council, President Scott’s career at City Hall culminated to her appointment as Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Humans Services, which made her the first Black woman to head a City department. As a new Councilmember, President Scott was quickly labeled the “jobs lady,” as she focused much of her time on getting fair, livable wages for all Rochestarians. She advocated for youth and children, supported environmentally friendly initiatives, sought equal housing rights, and worked with the business community as a small business owner herself. President Scott would like to thank the Rochester community for their years of support!

He came home only to have to fight the KKK, Paul Woods as a young soldier (right) and honored Veteran (l) (Left) lynching's, and segregation. But says: “We were all brother’s on the battlefield. Department's Treatment Of Nine Year Old Child: Calls For Preventive Mental Health Reform In WNY On Friday, January 29, 2021 in Rochester N.Y., a nine year old child was handcuffed and pepper-sprayed. Police were called to the home following reports of “family trouble.” Body camera footage showed officers restraining the girl, pushing her into the snow to administer handcuffs while she screamed repeatedly for her father. She was forced into the car, and pepper-sprayed when she did not calm down in a way the officers deemed appropriate, as she pleaded F for them to wipe her eyes. “You’re acting like a child," one office scolded. The girl replied, “I am a child!” The Buffalo Police Advisory Board (BPAB) released the following statement condemning the incident: The Buffalo Police Advisory Board finds the actions of the Rochester Police Department unacceptable, and this incident highlights the need for mental health reforms in police departments. The killing of Daniel Prude that took place in Rochester on March 30, 2020 and the shooting of Willie Henley in Buffalo on September 2020 have demonstrated what activists and health professionals of both cities have said: police officers are not properly equipped, trained, or prepared to deal with mental health crises or situations dealing with emotional trauma. Presently, the City of Buffalo does not have a wide-spread, government operated diversion program. A diversion program would place the process of working with mentally ill individuals in need of assistance in the hands of professionals with extensive professional training and experience needed to successfully attempt de-escalation and link with long-term services. Therefore, the BPAB has called upon the Council to take steps with the Mayor’s Office, Buffalo Police Department, and County to create a diversion model based on the following recommendations: Continued Page 10
U.N.I.A. MANIFESTO: Declaration of Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World
T
he greatest mass movement of Black people in history remains that of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA ). Founded on July 15, 1914 in Kingston, Jamaica by Marcus Garvey, the UNIA exploded in popularity after Garvey moved to the United States and established a branch in Harlem in 1918. Garvey’s militancy, his global vision, his unapologetically pro-Black, pro-African stance, and his demands for Black economic sovereignty and political independence – including his audacious, anti-colonial call of “Africa for the Africans, at home and abroad” – held an obvious appeal to Black folk. This was especially so given the horrific increase in antiBlack violence and colonial repression throughout the Black world in the aftermath of World War I. By the 1920s, thousands of UNIA divisions had been formed in more than forty countries and the organization counted millions of members around the world. Targeted by the US government and attacked by African-American leaders across the ideological specContinued Page 10

The Vaccine is Just the Beginning
The best approach, for now, remains following publichealth guidance like mask wearing and social distancing—which, thankfully, should help curb the seasonal flu, too. It’s looking increasingly like COVID-19 will one day be just as preventable as the flu, if not more so—but mass vaccination is only just beginning, so we’re in for a few more months of pandemic life. There is no silver bullet for managing critical [COVID-19] illness. The silver bullet is actually preventing the infection in the first place.”(-Excerpted from Time on line)

Intermittent Fasting: Our Greatest Weapon “Anything you can’t fast from you are a slave to”
W
e are currently in the seemingly inescapable throes of chronic disease and the US Health Care System. While many of us were able to escape life on the plantation, we can’t seem to escape the vicious cycle of doctor visits, trips to the pharmacy and a deteriorating quality of life, which ultimately and sadly leads to premature death. It’s been said, “There are many issues facing the African American community, but if we don’t have our health, not much else matters.” The situation looks dire but there is a solution, a weapon as we like to call it. Intermittent fasting is our greatest defense against chronic disease and is the sure path to freedom and escape a system that gets rich while we get sick. In this article I will discuss what intermittent fasting is, why breakfast is not the most important meal of the day and the incredible things that happen to the body while fasting. The Myth of 6 small meals a Day. Admittedly, I was once a proponent of eating 6 small meals a day. This was what was taught in my Nutrition training. The premise is, the body needs a constant source of energy to fuel its activities and aid in a functioning metabolism. We’ve all been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you skipped breakfast, you might as well throw the entire day away. The truth is, there is no science behind the myth of breakfast being the most important meal of the day or eating six small meals a day. It’s propaganda. The truth is, eating first thing in the morning and then eating every 2-3 hours until you go to bed takes a tremendous toll on the body, especially when the body must process, transport, store or eliminate the myriad of unhealthy food we consume. It results in weight gain, premature aging and chronic disease. I promise you won’t starve if you fast. In fact, I read that the average American has enough fat storage to go at least 2 months without food. Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is a practice that our ancestors have practiced from the slave quarters all the way back to Africa. Dr. Llaila Afrika, author of African Holistic Health explains, “food ideally should be eaten from 12 noon to 7pm, metabolized in the blood from 7pm to 4am and from 4am to noon the body is cleansing”. If we are constantly eating, the body does not have time to cleanse, repair and heal. There are many ways that one can engage in intermittent fasting. I prefer the 16/8 method. 16 hours of fasting, with an 8- hour feeding period. Ideally one’s last meal should be no later than 7pm and the first meal of the day (break fast) should be eaten at 11am the following day. What Happens to Your Body When You Fast? Amazing, incredible things happen to your body when you fast. A process called autophagy occurs. This is when the body recycles the old defective protein and mitochondria in the cells. It actually takes the diseased parts of our cells and transmutes them into functioning parts. The body literally begins to heal itself from the inside out when you fast. Here are some other incredible things that happen to your body when you fast: •Weight loss •Improvements in blood pressure •Improvements in cholesterol •Improvements in insulin sensitivity •Reboots the immune system •Increased mental clarity Continued Page 5

Two White pastors in Texas are under fire for reportedly calling Vice President Kamala Harris a “jezebel” from their pulpits. Pastor Steve Swofford of First Baptist Church of Rockwall, Texas referred to President Joe Biden as a “cognitively dysfunctional president.” He asked his congregation, “What if something happens to him, and Jezebel has to take over? Jezebel Harris? Isn’t that her name?” Two weeks later, Pastor Tom Buck, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lindale, Texas, made his first reference to the vice president on Twitter, where, according to Baptist News, he wrote: “I can’t imagine any truly God-fearing Israelite who would’ve wanted their daughters to view Jezebel as an inspirational role model because she was a woman in power.” According to Baptist News, Dwight McKissic, a Black Southern Baptist minister, condemned Buck’s remarks as "unwarranted & disrespectful, extremely harmful ...extremely un-Christ like.'McKissic of Buck, who he said was a friend.“Consequently, I choose not to engage in any further fellowship with Tom Buck.”

$timulus Update
March 14. That’s the date by which Democratic lawmakers hope to finally pass the long-awaited coronavirus relief bill. There’s a lot to do before then, though. House committees are aiming to get their parts of the bill over to the Budget Committee by February 16. Then in the Senate, Democrats need the support of legislators who may be on the fence about some provisions, like moderate Sen. Joe Manchin, who has argued against the $15 minimum wage hike included in the bill and disagrees with some proposed income thresholds for that all-important $1,400 stimulus check. Stay tuned.

HomeLight is partnering with NAREB in this venture with the goal of ultimately improving the rate of homeownership for Black Americans across the country, according to Antoine Thompson, NAREB national executive director. Black Americans represent less than 6% of all real estate professionals in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau. “This initiative works to close the income and racial wealth gap in the industry,” Thompson said. “Together we’re holding open the door that would otherwise remain closed to Black professionals and consumers.” Homeownership rates for Black Americans dipped to 44.1% in the fourth quarter of 2020. That’s despite an overall rise of 0.7% in homeownership in the fourth quarter of 2020. As part of the Black Real Estate Agent program, HomeLight and NAREB will help cover up to $5,000 of the onboarding costs for new agents, including prelicensing classes, agent exams and select marketing and technology needs. Each program participant will be paired with an experienced NAREB real estate counselor who will serve as a mentor and advisor. The NAREB is seeking applicants in the United States who are between the ages of 18 and 35, are interested in a career in real estate but not currently established as an agent, willing to work with a NAREB broker during at least their first year in real estate, and committed to spending five to 10 hours per week working with mentors or on continuing education. NAREB President Lydia Pope said “democracy in
housing” cannot be reached without an increase of Black real estate professionals.
WE SELL MONEY… Mortgages & More
“Agents are the frontline and introduce homeownership to prospective clients,” Pope said. “We are confident that this new program will not only equip Black American program participants with the knowledge and practical experience to become top producers in their communities, but also significantly expand Black homeownership in their communities.”
When others say NO… We can get you the YES you deserve!
Black homeownership rate was the only demographic to decline year-over-year, according to the Census Bureau. White Americans increased homeownership in the fourth quarter to 74.5% – a nine-year high. Hispanic-American homeownership rose to its highest rate in three years, at 49.1% last quarter. Asian, Native, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander homeownership was reported at 59.5% – up from the rate of 57.6% in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Together, we believe we can fundamentally shift diversity and equality in our industry by increasing access to training, education, and support for Black real estate agents.”

The New Way To View Introducing Buffalo’s Only Black Owned & Operated Video Streaming Service

increased online presence, Phil, Jimmie, and Korey have also used it to recruit producers and artists for SkoVu Tv’s original content; A major reason for the lineup in Season 2 of How I Came Up.
he experts agree. This is a great time for Black stories and Black storytellers. And the big guns - from Netflix to Hulu - can’t do it all.
“I believe some people just didn’t know what was out there, so what better way to show them by interviewing people who have success in that career path...We wanted to share the truth of what it really takes to excel,” explained Korey Green.
Enter SkoVuTV - Buffalo’s only Black owned and operated streaming service, offering its viewers “some of the best independent original films, series, talk and reality shows in one place.” In the last 6 months SkoVu TV has garnered over 40, 000 views on its hit show, How I Came Up. Detailing the stories of DJs, media personalities, celebrities and entrepreneurs from Buffalo and abroad, the success story series has become a catalyst for local creatives to network.
Highlighting the lives of high-profile people like Darius Pridgen, Dennis Wilson, and Benny The Butcher among many others, How I Came Up’s success in itself is the culmination of unity. Created by Korey Green initially under his production company Black Rose Production House, the show joined SkoVu Tv as an original after the first season. With Green’s leadership and the addition of Sam Hill as the official host for Season 2 of the show, How I Came Up’s sharper focus elevates Buffalo’s most respected voices.
Uniting producers, writers, and artists together, SkoVu TV’s growing engagement from How I Came Up is a step towards the on-demand network’s plan to expand. Already providing over 160 hours of original content on the platform, creator Phil Davis is set to double that number by the end of this year.
“I think being able to create a safe space, and just having great dialogue and going back and forth just makes for a really good show,” mentioned Sam Hill.
“We want to make sure that our company offers more than just a streaming platform,” said Davis. “ We offer education, offer training and we offer production.”
With a solid background in corporate career development and recently forming his own consultant firm Career Change Guru, Sam Hill’s attention to detail and general interest in career growth assisted in facilitating conversations with featured artists for the show. Most recently sitting down with DJ Khaled for a How I Came Up episode, Hill cherishes the opportunities to connect with elevated people.
The goal is to ultimately make SkoVu a “one-stop shop” for media businesses and advertisers.. Slated to film a handful of new projects this year, SkoVu Tv is looking to build an even a stronger relationship with the creative community in Buffalo. -From On-stage to On ScreenFor over a decade, Phil, an extraordinarily talented thespian with strong roots in Buffalo’s Black theatre community, ran his own theatre company, Alemaedae Theater Productions, writing scripts, acting and advocating on behalf of the city’s youth.
“The platform has been great just because I’ve been able to talk to a lot of professionals, entrepreneurs,” explained Hill.

PRAY FOR HAITI! Country Braces for Unrest as President Refuses to Step Down
H
aiti’s prolonged political crisis is coming to a head over the question of whether President Jovenel Moïse ‘s term ended last Sunday (Feb. 7, 2021) or will end on Feb. 7, 2022. The poor now target the poor in Haiti. Many fear leaving their homes, buying groceries or paying a bus fare — acts that can draw the attention of gangs out to kidnap anyone with cash, no matter how little. Many schools shut their doors this month — not over COVID-19, but to protect students and teachers against a kidnapping-for-ransom epidemic that began haunting the nation a year ago. No one is spared: not nuns, priests or the children of struggling street vendors. Students now organize fundraisers to collect ransoms to free classmates. Their hardship may only worsen as Haiti hurtles toward a constitutional crisis. The opposition has demanded that President Jovenel Moïse step down, saying his five-year term ended Sunday. But the president is refusing to vacate office, arguing that an interim government occupied the first year of his five-year term. In a defiant, hourlong speech Sunday, Moïse heaped scorn on his detractors. “I am not a dictator,” Moïse said. “My term ends Feb. 7, 2022.” As tensions mounted Sunday, the government announced the arrest of more than 20 people, claiming they had been involved in a plot to overthrow and kill the president. After years enduring hunger, poverty and daily power cuts, Haitians say their country, the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, is in the worst state they have seen, with the government unable to provide the most basic services. Many fear the current political tensions will only worsen the country’s paralysis and poor governance. By Sunday afternoon, clashes erupted between protesters and the police in three different cities across the nation. Haiti is “on the verge of explosion,” a collection of the country’s Episcopal bishops said in a statement late last month. Over the weekend, Haiti’s judiciary branch sided with the opposition, a disparate grouping of activists, politicians and religious leaders, and ruled that Moïse’s term ended Sunday. On Friday, the US government weighed in on Moïse’s side — an important perspective for many Haitians, who often look to their larger neighbor for guidance on the direction the political winds are blowing. Where Does the US Stand? Despite the discord, the US has accepted Moise’s claim to power. The country continues to be in a stalemate because of the lack of institutions needed to break it. This is a continuing story.
Austin Chenge, a Michigan businessman, is the first Republican to announce his intention to challenge popular Democrat Gretchen Whitmer for the office of governor in the Great Lakes State. Chenge, a Black man, announced on his Instagram page that, if elected, he will “cancel Black History Month in Michigan.” “It’s offensive, unfair, maybe illegal,” he contended. “Americans from all backgrounds deserve a revered history. I’ll declare American History Month.” Chenge, who announced his candidacy for Michigan governor last spring, spoke at a “Stop the Steal” rally in the state’s capital in November. He also defended the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building, saying “some of them were overcome by passion, more passion than others and may have acted in a way that they didn’t intend to when they went there.” Chenge, a U.S. Army veteran of Nigerian descent, is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 35-year-old’s website says he studied law at Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The next election for governor of Michigan is November 2022.

trum, while also a victim of his own failures of management, Garvey was arrested and jailed for mail fraud in 1922, convicted in 1923, and deported back to Jamaica in 1927. While a handful of UNIA divisions have continued to operate to this day, the organization declined following Garvey’s deportation. However, the impact of Garvey, Garveyism, and the UNIA persists. Garvey helped to usher in the development of Black consciousness and he influenced later generations of Black activists fighting for civil rights and African and Caribbean independence. Likewise, the celebrated iconography of the UNIA – the black star and the red, black, and green flag , for instance – have been embedded within the visual languages of Black nationalism and pan-Africanism. Garvey, wrote C.L.R. James in A History of Pan-African Revolt , “made the American Negro conscious of his African origin and created for the first time a feeling of international solitarily among Africans and people of African descent.” In August 1920, during the peak years of the movement, the UNIA convened the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World in New York City. Some two thousand delegates from twenty countries gathered for a month of debates, sessions, and spectacular parades. During the final session of the Convention, delegates drafted a document that provided a comprehensive statement on global Black conditions and a systematic assertion of Black rights. Titled “Declaration of Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World ,” it remains a model for the global Black movements of our time.

hey sicced the police on a kindergarten baby. They literally arrested a 5 year-old, putting him in handcuffs. In another kindergarten classroom, the teacher made 5 year-olds clean up the feces of a sick classmate who had soiled the floor. High school incidents were also harrowing. In one case, a tiny 17 year-old girl was tackled by police and thrown in jail overnight, with no notice to her parents. In another, a teacher grabbed the braided hair of a 17 year-old boy and ripped his cornrow out from the nape of his neck to the top of his head. What horrible offenses could these children have committed to deserve such treatment? Well, in the case of 15 year-old Jawaan Daniels, he was wandering the halls in June of 2010 when he was supposed to be in class. Instead of nudging him along, school officials suspended him. As he made his way home, he was shot and killed while standing at the bus stop. Some 18,000 children (Including kindergarteners) were suspended in 2011 alone, often for non-violent, frivolous offenses like wearing flip-flop sandals, talking during a fire drill, being late for a class, skipping detention. Emptying the classrooms of students who would likely perform poorly on exams helped teachers look better – in a district that routinely graduated around 47% of its students – since the inception of the school system. In truth, Buffalo Public Schools had the structure, requirements and mandates to actually produce competent graduates and refined human beings – if administrators had wanted to. Regarding suspensions, students were supposed to be provided assistance with home instruction and materials, after parents had been notified of an infraction and given their consent to suspension. None of that happened. By law, District Stake holder meetings, where parents, community members, administrators, the school board and the Superintendent were to agree upon a process for assessing student achievement were supposed to be held four times per year. Superintendent James Williams told us brazenly that although it was the law, he considered it outmoded, and he just wasn’t doing that. Parents were supposed to have input on expenditutres, but school officials routinely ignored that requirement. In a district where 48 out of 57 schools were failing, teacher development was available, but their union contract didn’t mandate it, so teachers ignored it. Teacher evaluations were mandated by the state, but the Teachers Union just blatantly refused to submit to them. By law, parents had the right to transfer their children from failing schools into schools in good standing, and the district routinely boasted a policy of “School Choice.” But when parents tried to make that choice, principals just told them there were no seats available. In addition to the structures that could have produced better outcomes, Teachers Union President Phil Rumore happily turned down nearly $59 million, because Obama administration “Race To The Top” funding required evaluations and the reassignment of teachers to different buildings in order to shake up inertia and spark better outcomes. But if they actually had to teach our children, hell, keep the money.

Stop The Violence? What Happened To The Movement to Repeal The Tiahrt Amendment?
VOICES
11
A recent Buffalo news article titled "2020 Was A Violent Year In Buffalo, Reflecting A National Trend” was mindblowing. It reported, "the number of people shot rose 90% compared to 2019." A story which appeared a few weeks later noted that at least 31 people had been shot during the first month of 2021; 8 homicides since Jan. 1 and two people wounded last year dying this year. On July 20, 2020, the Most Valuable Parents of Buffalo (MVP), launched the "Stop Illegal Gun Trafficking (Repeal the Tiahrt Amendment)" initiative. Several organizations, including the Stop the Violence Coalition, are supporting it in solidarity. Mayor Brown during his comments, at the event, co-signed the need for its repealing. Also, on that day Congressman Brian Higgins posted online, "Higgins Backs Community Effort to Reduce Gun Violence." . In support of the MVP's activity -- Mr. Higgins stated he made a Bill proposal to address gun violence -- which included the repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment. •I received an email from Congressman Higgins, on 10/23/20, in response to my inquiry for an update. Zero was in it about the preceding. (Puzzling, only the title and introduction paragraph of the Congressman's 7/30/20 post remains, now.) • In brief, the Amendment significantly weakens law enforcement efforts to prevent crimes and prosecute gun offenders. The powerful National Rifle Association [NRA] lobbied it into existence to protect gun dealers is a claim. This is done in two ways: 1) The FBI is required to destroy all approved gun purchasers records WITHIN 24 HOURS. 2) IT CONTINUES TO PROHIBIT THE RELEASE OF FIREARMS TRACE DATA FOR THE PURPOSES OF SUING GUN MANUFACTURERS AND DEALERS. However, IT DOES NOT prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from ". . . sharing or exchanging statistical information . . . among law enforcement agencies . . . concerning the importation and exportation of guns [and] publishing [annually] reports regarding FIREARMS TRAFFICKERS AND TRAFFICKING CHANNELS OR FIREARMS MISUSE, FELONS AND TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATIONS." • Previous appeal Bills (i.e., H.R. 5271 [3/14/18] and S.3299 [2/13/20] essentially were sent to the Legislative "Dead Zone." The first was referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. The "RIP" place for the second one, after being "read twice," was the Committee on the Judiciary. Wow! African American voters, in Buffalo and across the country, undeniably contributed HUGELY to the victory in the White House and the ascension of Democrats to the majority status in Congress. Repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment would represent a good return on that investment. Senator Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader, should make it a top priority!
An Open Letter to the Mayor of Buffalo: Rescind The School Speed Law! Dear Mayor Brown: This letter is written with the deepest respect for the office you hold. And know, that respect continues throughout this communication, however, somethings need your attention and must be brought to light. This is not an indictment, clarity is needed surrounding this issue. In all honesty, for the health of our great city and its citizens, you must rescind the school speed law. It has created an unhealthy attitude and an ongoing murmur among various populations which should not be allowed to continue. You must rescind the school speed law. It is a blaring infraction that seeks to control the mobility and mentality of the citizens of this city. Hopefully at this time, as Mayor of the City of Buffalo, you are considering your legacy. The enactment of this one ordinance will forever overshadow all the good you may have done. It feels like a vendetta towards the people or possibly a show of power which has been misdirected. This law is oppressive, and possibly short-sighted. You must rescind the school speed law. Creatively, there is more than one way to put people in cages. This plan effectively works in large cities like New York where the population is in the millions and there is a steady stream of pedestrians. But in the city of Buffalo where sidewalks literally become ghost towns between the hours of 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, it takes some imagination to see the need for, and the effectiveness of the plan. The financial weight of such a plan in this time of Covid virus, unemployment, racial disparity, violence, confusion, and depression - is “aggressive,” to say the least. Mayor, you must rescind the school speed law. Irrational, burdensome, unfair, oppressive, hazzardest and even a little bit “crazy” are adjectives attached to the conversations surrounding this ordinance. Repealing of this law will demonstrate compassionate government and provide the muchneeded hope, “most needed now.” Mr. Mayor, we need wise and empathic leadership. In an era where oppression is the norm, the people of Buffalo are hopeful that your actions are not to this end, nor to a means no one wants to mention. We wish to remember our Mayor with favor, honor, dignity, and respect. Two Concerned Citizens Gayle Bryant Sadie Garner

Erie County Legislature Reforms Responsible Bidder Law County leaders act to strengthen contracting integrity and accountability
The Erie County Legislature last week voted to update the 2009 Lowest Responsible Bidder Law, reaffirming the County’s standing as a leader in responsible contracting. The law provides tools to ensure contractors bidding on County-owned construction projects have the capability, performance record, and business integrity to justify the award of taxpayer dollars and can successfully perform the work. The New York Foundation for Fair Contracting (NYFFC) applauds County leaders for strengthening the tools so law abiding contractors who deliver high-quality construction have a fair shot at public works contracts. “All too often in the construction industry, bad actors gain a competitive advantage by cheating their workers or taxpayers,” said NYFFC Director Matt Kent. “Erie County’s common sense rules of the road ensure that cheaters do not prosper off our tax dollars.” This reform was made possible thanks to the leadership of bill sponsors Legislature Chair April Baskin, Majority Leader Tim Meyers, and Legislator Howard Johnson. The Legislature’s reform package was enhanced through constructive engagement with the Administration of County Executive Mark Poloncarz, as spearheaded by Deputy County Executive Maria Whyte, an author of the 2009 law. Policymakers were aided by Cathy Creighton, also an original author of the 2009 law and now Director of Cornell University’s Buffalo Co-Lab, who provided expert advice and guidance throughout the process. Erie County has enforced the law to reject a contractor that withheld evidence of its troubling safety record and worker deaths, and a firm that lied about its felony conviction for defrauding the state by having workers collect unemployment while performing contracts. The reform aligns Erie County and state responsible bidder standards, makes technical fixes to ensure due process throughout contract awards, and expands coverage to all County departments that put construction contracts out to bid. The NYFFC recognizes Erie County as a leader statewide in government contracting accountability and looks forward to approval and implementation. Municipalities across the state should look to Erie County’s example in awarding hard-earned taxpayer dollars only to the lowest responsible bidders. The New York Foundation for Fair Contracting is a watchdog nonprofit established to level the playing field in public works construction for the benefit of taxpayers, upstanding contractors, and workers.

Movin’ On Up ! B
by A. Dorcely
efore anyone asks. Yes, I did sanitize my hands before I wrote this article. Sign of the times. I couldn’t help it. Covid jokes! But nothing was funny when the Toronto Raptors played the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. Especially, not to Kevin Durant. I’ll go into that a bit more as this article progresses. Many moves and movements have been made to make this NBA season come to fruition. One of which I’ve indicated before was that of the Toronto Raptors move to Tampa. Which makes it hard for me to not refer to them as the Tampa Raptors for this season and since Tom Brady won the Super Bowl they maybe known as the Tompa Raptors for the rest of the season if Tampa Bay’s mayor has any say in the matter(Super Bowl hasn’t taken place yet when this is being written). Imagine that!!! As I went to watch the Raptors’ game versus the Nets I contemplated on what I should call my article. I’m was coming up with such titles as Fred VanDamn(as in action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme) or Fred The Godsend(as in rapper Fred The Godson who died of Covid). The reason for this is VanVleet decided to “bet on his skills” prior to this season and it paid off during the summer as he was awarded the largest contract in NBA history for an undrafted free agent. In Toronto’s last game the contract awarded spoke volumes as he scored a franchise record 54 points. VanVleet put the rest of the league on notice. So for me knowing that athletes can at times continue being in such a zone from one game to the next I was making a preemptive strike mentally by coming up with a title that might fit another game such as that. Movin’ On Up is what I obviously ended up using though. This was the title of a theme song to Pascal Siakam was Spicy in the 4th quarter. The Jeffersons. I might be dating myself here. I Photo taken by A. Dorcely don’t want to give away too much. But you can feel free to do some more research on the song if you like. VanVleet is not moving on up on his own. The Raptors as a whole have been putting a string of victories together. Now they’re facing the Brooklyn Nets who are also atop a short list of teams considered to be elite in the NBA because of personnel upgrades. At this time I want to take time out to wish you and your family continued strength and health. Now back to our scheduled programming. Prior to the start of the game it was made known that because of Covid protocols Kevin Durant would not be starting the contest with more information to follow. Toronto got off to a fast start. Leading 7-0 early on. Kyrie Irving finally put the Nets on the board at the 10:39 mark. But the lead only grew from there to 12-4 at 9:24 in first when Fred VanVleet made his first basket. Brooklyn managed to get the score to 19-11 with about six minutes left in the quarter. At 4:13 left in the first quarter Kevin Durant checked into the game. Not too long after Chris Boucher made a great close out block on a three point attempt from the baseline by Jeff Green. The first quarter ended with the score 34-23 favoring the Raptors. The start of the second quarter included more sloppy play from the Nets that had led to 17 fastbreak points by Toronto so far. At 10:07 the score was 44-27 as the Raptors continued an offensive surge with Norman Powell leading the way. But anyone who knows basketball knows it’s a game of runs. So with the Brooklyn being an offensive juggernaut and their newly formed big three the Raptors went into the half ahead only by 4, 67-63. I asked Coach Nurse about the run that was spearheaded by an offensive foul called on a pick towards the end of half. He said, “that it contributed to the herky jerkey flow of the game and that it took Toronto a while to get back in rhythm.” Brooklyn was able to capture the lead early in the 3rd quarter. With some questionable calls in the second continuing to plague Toronto in the 3rd. VanVleet earned a technical followed by Coach Nurse respectively. Afterwards Kevin Durant was called for his fourth and fifth foul in about a 30 second time span. The 5th was challenged and reversed. Durant went to the bench anyway to prevent him from picking up that 5th foul again during the quarter. While on the bench he was informed that his night was over do to Covid protocol. This obviously changed the outlook of the game and the offensive strategy of the Nets as well as the defensive strategy of Toronto. Coach Nurse was now able to use some zone while trapping the ball out of Kyrie Irving’s hands and James Harden’s clutches. The Raptors led by 2, 92-90 going into the fourth. At the 9:00 minute mark in the fourth Brooklyn took the lead by 2. As the fourth quarter continued both teams showed their offensive prowess as the lead changed hands. But Siakam using his size advantage and Lowry with his “Nelly” look(bandaid under his right eye) proved to be too much for Brooklyn. The Raptors won the game 123-117. Allowing Toronto to once again “Move On Up” in the East side. The Eastern Conference standings that is!
