Superintendent Cash Apologizes to Muslim Students for Schools Not Honoring the Victims of New Zealand Massacre with Moment of Silence Mariya Sami, the non-voting student representative on the Buffalo School Board, raised the issue of city schools not allowing a moment of silence in the wake of the March 15 mass shooting that killed 50 Muslims in two New Zealand mosques. A student at Leonardo da Vinci High School, Sami told board members that when she asked the principal if the moment of silence could take place, she was told it had to come from district administrators. Superintendent Kriner Cash apologized to Sami and said he would work to heal any hard feelings. He also indicated that the principal ”had the flexibility” to implement the moment of silence without an ok from the district.

Peoples-Stokes Quoted in Times Article Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, the first woman and the first African American to serve as NYS Assembly majority leader, was included in a March 31 New York Times feature on the rise of women in New York State politics. “Men or women who are sexist and don’t have the same level of respect, it doesn’t matter what your job title is. They put you in one little place and they still think you’re there, no matter what,” she stated. A record number of women ran and won this past November. There are now 70 women in the State Legislature, the most women ever to serve in that lawmaking body.

Black People Who Acquired Wealth During Era of Enslavement

Bridget "Biddy" Mason

Bridget Mason (aka “Biddy”) was an enslaved Black female who obtained her freedom in 1856 and worked as a nurse in Los Angeles. She eventually saved enough money to purchase two estates, making her one of the first Black women to own property in Los Angeles. Over several years, she bought and managed more property. She leased out this property commercially and sold portions of it. As Los Angeles grew, so did the value of her real estate. In 1872, she financed the city’s first Black church. By the late 1800s, Mason had acquired a fortune of $300,000, making her the wealthiest black woman in the city James Forten was an accomplished,Philadelphia born, free Black man. He was born September 2, 1766, and joined the Continental Navy at age 15. He survived capture by the British when they seized the Royal Louis, a vessel on which he was a crewman. After that ordeal, he undertook an apprenticeship as a sailmaker. He invented a sailmaking device that brought him great fortune. By the 1830s, his estimated worth was $100,000, which equates to roughly $2.5 million in today’s money. Forten became a leader in the black community and advocated for the abolishment of slavery. He refused to do business with slave trade vessels, and he invested his money into antislavery initiatives.

Former Detroit Mayor Once Again Denied Motion to Vacate 28-Year Sentence Kwame Kilpatrick has once again hit a snag in his quest to have his 28-year prison sentence renounced. U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds recently rejected the appeal from the former mayor of Detroit, who is in his eighth year in prison. Kilpatrick’s motion argued the court made errors during his trial. Among the issues he alleged were incorrect jury instructions, impermissible hearsay and his defense lawyer having a conflict of interest. The action was the 48-year-old Kilpatrick’s latest move in an attempt to become a free man since he was sent to prison in 2013 following a federal corruption trial. Kilpatrick previously tried to get President Donald Trump to commute his sentence in June 2018. At the time, he had served seven years of his sentence. Trump did not respond to his request.

Dr. Bernice King Shuts Down Fox Claims That America Deserves 'Credit' for Ending Slavery Recently Kate Pavlich appeared on the Fox News to remind viewers that negroes have never formally thanked this country for ending slavery. Gurgling a mixture of privilege-flavored White tears, Pavlich’s voice quivered with ignorance as she chastised people who blame America for slavery. “They keep blaming America for the sin of slavery but the truth is, throughout human history, slavery has existed,” Pavlich explained, using the most-used entry from the Official Manual of White Excuses. “And America came along as the first country to end it within 150 years. And we get no credit for trying to move forward and trying to make good on that.” This prompted Rev. Dr. Bernice King—CEO of Atlanta’s King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, to offer a rebuttal. “America doesn’t deserve credit for ‘ending slavery’,” she began. “What America ended (on paper) reflects an ideology and a quest for power at the expense of humanity that are still prevalent in the policies, spirit and mores of this nation.” “Also, a nation gets no credit for ‘ending’ a violent atrocity that it allowed and cultivated on its soil and in other nations,” she continued in a subsequent tweet. Then as White tears descended from the sky, and Twitter user @tinagolden71165 fought through violent sobs to reply with, “If you truly believe this, you will never help bring our county together,” Bernice had something for that too. “Lying about and denying the history of this nation and the influene enslavement still has on us today won’t bring us together,” Bernice, ever the diplomat, continued. “Truth must precede and accompany reconciliation. Truth: People who point out racism and its dangers aren’t dividing us. Racism is. It’s killing people, too.” Our Queen has spoken! -The Root

EAST SIDE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY FOOD SERVICE FOR THE NORTHLAND BELTLINE CORRIDOR 683 NORTHLAND AVENUE (NORTHLAND CENTRAL)

Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (“BUDC”) has issued a Request for Proposals (“RFP”) for a restaurant and food service operator to be located inside the Northland Central building at 683 Northland Avenue, the initial centerpiece building of the Northland Beltline Redevelopment Area on the East Side of Buffalo, New York. BUDC is seeking an operator that is experienced with serving the East Side, African-American community in which this fully-developed restaurant is located, as well as students, faculty and staff of the Northland Workforce Training Center. The food service vendor will operate in a 3,900-Square Foot café-style space on the first floor of Northland Central, directly adjacent to the Northland Workforce Training Center with shared public access. The space fronts on Northland Avenue to serve all tenants of Northland Central, as well as the surrounding community. It shares space on the ground floor of this commercial building with training labs, office spaces, seating areas, and conference rooms. It will also be open to other businesses on the Northland Campus and the larger surrounding neighborhood. HEALTH MATTERS

Multiple Myeloma Awareness Multiple myeloma (MM) is the most common form of blood cancer that affects the blood and bones and tends to be about twice as common among African Americans compared to White Americans. Men are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than women. The good news is that some studies suggest that compared to White Americans, African Americans tend to have less aggressive forms of MM. The most common signs and symptoms of multiple myeloma include: •Fatigue. As myeloma cells replace bone marrow, your body has to work much harder with fewer disease-fighting cells, and you tire more easily. •Bone problems. Myeloma can prevent your body from making new bone cells, causing problems like bone pain, weakened bones, and broken bones. •Kidney problems. Myeloma cells produce harmful proteins that can cause kidney damage and even failure. •Low blood counts. Myeloma cells crowd out healthy blood cells, leading to low red blood counts (anemia) and low white blood cells (leukopenia). Unhealthy blood cell levels make it harder to fight infections. •Frequent infections. Fewer antibodies in your blood make fighting infections more difficult.

Even A Little Bit of 5th Annual Refugee Soda Is A Lot Not Good Health Fair Planned Studies continue to emerge that drinking soda, yes even the diet ones is legitimately terrible for most people. A recent study has concluded that everyone really, really needs to work on cutting soda, sports drinks, and other sugary libations out of their diets. Researchers at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health have found that sugarsweetened beverages (SSBs) contribute to a higher risk of early death from “any cause.” That’s significant, because it means more soda—even just two per week—is linked to increased risk of early death. Researchers also found a “particularly strong link” between sugar sweetened beverages and cardiovascular disease. Among both men and women, a “modest link” was also found between the regular drinking of sugar sweetened beverages and early cancer risks. The increased early death risk linked with sugar sweetened beverage consumption was more pronounced among women than among men.

“Knowing when to stop, you can avoid any danger.” -Tao Te Ching

With The Name of God Most Gracious Most Merciful

The Straight Path

-A Message of Divine GuidancePeace be unto you. Prayer is one of the most important if not the most important duty of a submitter. It is the only known way of communicating with the Creator, or as He Himself says, it’s a remembrance of Him (Surah 20:14). This is a duty which has a lot of things to remember, the first being preparation or Wudu. (Surah 5:6) teaches us exactly how and when to wash ourselves and if there is no water what to use. The verse even explains what you should do after sexual intercourse. (Surah 2:142-143) tells us where to face during prayer. (Surah 29:45) tells us what we must recite and the blessings thereof. Prayer Positions The first was shown to Adam after his creation (Sura 7:11 and 15:30). The angels fell prostrate before him and the lesson that was taught was going from standing straight to prostration (also seen in Numbers 20:6). The next position is kneeling (1 Kings 8:54-55) (2 Chronicles 6:13). After that position back to faces on the ground (Revelations 7:11-12) .Then those positions are repeated to end the prayer. Why two times? -See (Surah 4:102103). In (Surah 20:11-12), the taking off of the shoes was mentioned to Moses. (Some food for thought - Surah 4:26, 6:90, 24:34) Clothing (Surah 7:26-27) In these verses two types of clothing are mentioned. Obviously the first that is recommend can be applied by our culture and is to cover your private parts and for beauty. The second clothing mentioned is of great significance. It is something that every human being can acquire, male or female. This clothing determines whether you are a submitter or n). This is the one the creator looks at to decide whether or not you qualify as a submitter. (Surah 24:30-31) talks about clothing for submitting women. In this verse, the women being addressed were wearing veils but walking around with their breasts exposed so the creator told them to drape their veils over their breasts. Head covering themselves have nothing to do with being righteous. (Surah 24:11-13) speaks of a woman wearing a veil yet she was accused of wrongdoings. Let’s go to (Surah 7:19-22). Here it is said that the devil caused them to take off their clothes by deception. They weren't wearing any physical clothes. The clothes that were stripped from them was taqua or consciousness of God. They then began to cover themselves because they were physically naked. It may be better to be physically naked while “wearing” taqua (God consciousness) over being covered with clothes while in ignorance. (Surah 7:31) has advice that we should follow and the clothes mentioned here is taqua.

“How many people can be buried in a cemetery lot?” If you have any questions about cremation or burial, give us a call at (716) 885-1600.

Most cemeteries allow 1 or 2 burials in a single grave. At Forest Lawn, we recently changed our rules & regulations to allow up to 4 burials in a single grave, w hich can include 1 casket plus 3 urns or a total of 4 urns. For example, if a couple chooses side-by-side casketed burial in 2 graves, there’s room for them and up 6 other members of their family. This can represent a significant cost savings for the family. But more importantly, it can make it possible for you and your dearest loved ones to remain together forever.

George Clinton to Embark on Final Tour with Parliament Funkadelic

Pictured: young talented Ggroup of "Can You Hear Me Now?” inner city youth performers

Let The Youth Voices of Inner City Buffalo Be Heard!

W

here do talented teens from the inner city go for their first big break? The answer is Can You Hear Me Now?, a showcase performance on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. This showcase will feature a dozen talented youth performers. They honed their original poetry, rap, music and dance in Can You Hear Me Now?, the open mic and skills workshop series that met Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons from February to mid-April at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center in Buffalo’s University District. This program is in its third year. It was born as a response to a pent up need. Can You Hear Me Now? was conceived and directed by Solomon Dixon, a celebrated local spoken word artist, hip hop dancer, and teacher, and Da’Von McCune, owner of D Real McCoy Entertainment. Together with Michael Tritto, the Associate Director at Gloria J. Parks Community Center, they sought to solve a tangible problem. The team knew there was a growing group of exceptional teen artists, and the opportunity to test their new works and develop their talent. Dixon, McCune, and Tritto asked themselves, “How do we use the arts to draw teens together, develop their talent and skills, and create a welcoming space to learn and have fun?” Dixon and McCune assembled a team made up of caring artists, who work with teens in many wonderful programs around the city. Together they use their existing relationships with local teens and Buffalo Public and Charters Schools to promote the program. The key has been to balance the social needs of the coffee house sessions with the challenge of developing the artists to move beyond their comfort zones and challenge themselves artistically. Some youth attend to be supportive spectators, and some come loaded with material to present at the mic. The combination is electric. Built into the program each evening is a light dinner, a brief skills workshop, guest speakers, and an open mic session. Solomon Dixon and Da’Von McCune aim to expand the language toolkit for youth to express themselves poetically and dramatically. Youth artists were encouraged to attend Saturday skills workshops at the community center, in which Dixon and McCune and several guest artists challenge the youth to expand their interpersonal skills, deepen the impact of their original work, and learn about the business side of the performing arts. This showcase performance at the Burchfield Penney Art Center on April 16 represents a proving ground of sorts for these young artists. It will feature the best original material developed by Buffalo teens over 10 weeks of coffeehouse open mic sessions and Saturday workshops. For some it will be the first time performing in public. For others it will be a chance to move their work to the next level. This event is produced by the University District Community Development Association (UDCDA), a non-profit agency offering youth and senior citizen programs at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center, 3242 Main Street and community and housing development services at 995 Kensington Avenue. The program is funded by a generous grant from the Erie County Youth Bureau. For more information on the program, contact Michael Tritto at 716-832-5085 or m.tritto@udcda.org .

Capping over 50 years of touring and recording, George Clinton is set to embark on his farewell tour with the legendary Parliament Funkadelic before he retires. After joining Red Hot Chili Peppers for a nine-city tour of Australia, George and PFunk follow up with their own Australian headline tour in April where they will hit the legendary Bluesfest stage in Byron Bay, and a stint in Japan at Billboard Live. Starting after Memorial Day weekend, the group will hit the road in North America with the ‘One Nation Under a Groove Tour.’ Joining P-Funk to send this icon of American pop culture off with a bang are Galactic, Fishbone, and Miss Velvet & The Blue Wolf all of whom are taking time out of their own busy schedules to hit the road with the Grammy-winning, oncerainbow-dreaded pioneer of Funk, Hip Hop, and Rock & Roll. Parliament Funkadelic has been a touring force for decades, and the current lineup including veterans as well as many younger generations of Clinton’s family who are set to move the legacy forward into the 21st century. This blended-family business has no plans of slowing down, even with their helmsman moving on. “It’s always been about the music and the band” said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. “That’s the real P-Funk legacy. They’ll still be funkin’ long after I stop.”

Setting The Record Straight: Jimmy Lyons Ongoing History...Ongoing Omissions

R

SUPPORT THE ARTS!

ecently, on a frigid Buffalo wintry day, I ventured downtown to the Central Library's African American Museum exhibit. Missing the speaker I pursued the books, photos and placards impressively displayed. Gathering a handful of pamphlets, the Ongoing History card produced by the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor caught my attention. I wondered, was Michigan Avenue ever known as Michigan Street? As I continued scanning down the placard I saw the heading WUFO 1080 AM. I stopped dead in my tracks. It stated: "WUFO has provided America with popular African American radio personalities including Frankie Crocker. Gary Byrd, Jerry Bledsoe, etc.” Really?!! I took a slow, deep breath. Before any of these personalities even set foot inside a radio station, much less put their voices on the air waves, Mr. Jimmy Lyons opened the door and quite frankly, as my drummer friend Darryl Washington puts it, "when my family gathered around the radio on Sunday to listen to the Upper Room we knew Jimmy Lyons had put an end to White supremacy on the radio!" It is high time we set the record straight. Before WUFO even existed Jimmy Lyons (who I affectionately call Daddy) worked tirelessly as a part time DJ on radio stations WXRA, WINE, and WWOL where he researched artists history (long before Google), answered fans' phone calls (no caller ID or call waiting) and make copy for commercial spots. His bread and butter job was technical illustrator for Bell Aircraft being one of only three Blacks. In addition to work, being husband and father, Daddy was a seasoned performer, having gigs as a professional singer, dancer, emcee and comic here in Buffalo and across the bridge. A well-rounded showman in the era of legal apartheid (Jim Crow) and the Green Book (thank you Mr. Green), it was constant vigilant determination just to keep your head above water and food on the table, all the while having to deal with the humiliating absurd caricatures mainstream

White media spewed forth. And yet, Buffalo was experiencing a thriving Black Community full of hard working business women and men forging ahead against the odds, establishing businesses, raising families, attending schools for higher education, travelling the world, creating music and works of art, against all odds. It's no wonder Buffalo attracted so many artists. Throughout the community block after block there were hot spots for music. The Pine Grill, BonTon, Little Harlem, Moonglow, Revilot, Royal Arms just to name a few The air would be filled with the sacred sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues, blues and gospel so thick you could taste it. This truly was the place to be! Daddy fit right into this Renaissance. Intelligent, with a keen eye and ear for artistic talent, Jimmy Lyons, born and raised in buffalo (he was Buffalo!) rose up from being a shoe shine boy dancing for pennies on street corners to becoming Buffalo's first full time Black DJ on the radio years before Dr. Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. Over the span of his radio career he interviewed on air such greats as Sammy Davis Jr., the Marvelettes, Little Stevie Wonder and Sam Cook. He also interviewed historical figures like Malcolm X, and Wyatt Tee Walker, one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s right hand lieutenants. Daddy certainly had his own dreams and realities. During WWII he served as a lieutenant in the segregated 92nd replacement company in Italy and Germany (Frankie Crocker was still in grammar school learning his ABC's). Returning to Buffalo after the war he and our mother Ruth bought a home in what we know on the Eastside as Cold Spring in 1948. Five generations of the Lyons family have come through this home on Northland Avenue. I am proud to say that I am still holding down the fort. In the early 60's Daddy started the Amateur Night at the Apollo on Jefferson Avenue. National as well as local artists were given the opportunity to perform for appreciative audiences and monetary prizes were awarded to the winners. Oftentimes the artists came to our home to have a delicious home cooked meal courtesy of our dear mother. We were allowed to eat dinner in the dining room

on a Wednesday. The "sit up straight, no elbows on the table" was the golden rule. But we still managed to have big fun! Friday nights were reserved for the swinging record hops at the Dellwood Ballroom. I still recall Daddy taking us to the radio stations so we could see where he worked. He introduced us to the other DJ's such as Joe and Lenny Rico. On Sundays, when WUFO was located on S. Cayuga in Williamsville, after Daddy finished his show he would treat us to Glen Park to ride the roller coaster. Very fond, priceless memories. As this year marks the 100th anniversary of Daddy's birth (March 15,1919), it is fitting and proper that not just the Michigan Street Heritage committee amends its ongoing omissions but that Buffalo, as a whole, recognizes and honors the tremendous talents, perseverance, sacrifice, courage, humanity, beauty and truly love that have

Jimmy Lyons

passed the tests of time giving all of us reasons to stand tall, keeping head to the sky, being very much present and accounted for. With eternal love I dedicate this article to Daddy and to Ma. Thank you for all and everything you have done to make this world a better place. We will remember where we come from as we move up and forever onward!

(Gail Lyons is the beloved daughter of Jimmy Lyons, who is working to ensure that her father’s historic legacy is properly honored and remembered. The legendary Mr. Lyons made his transition on December 28, 1981.)

CAO Under Siege: A Conversation with L. Nathan Hare

fter a few tries we make our connection, and when we do, Nate Hare jumps right in. He launches immediately into a rebuttal of accusations of impropriety and mismanagement at the CAO, the organization he’s nurtured and grown as its CEO since 2002. By now it’s a well-worn narrative, just like the tale of chaos and dysfunction being pushed by The Buffalo News, despite his persistent attempts to correct the record with documented facts. Not surprisingly, the passion that has enabled him to grow the CAO’s budget, services, and workforce exponentially – also makes him its best defender. But it’s not that he’s anxious to have his say; he’s been doing that. He’s anxious… to be heard. “I have sent at least four different rebuttals to these people in the past month,” he says, “and nothing. They’ll pick out a couple of sentences from what I said, but put shade on the sentence. Then they’ll just keep repeating the same stuff over and over and over again.” SABIRAH What was it that started this months-long MUHAMMAD campaign to slander and sabotage the CAO? According to Mr. Hare, lay persons from the community who were granted seats on the board in compliance with agency regulations had the erroneous perception that they were the heads of the organization, and began jockeying for more and more influence and authority within it. Of one of them he says: “She just basically became enamored in herself, and felt that because she was the chair of the board, that she was the god of the Community Action Organization. That’s fundamentally what the issue was.” On March 11th, the CAO released an audit disproving any claims of financial impropriety, which was claimed by former board dissidents, including Jennifer Shank and Jenine Dunn. Though there were some clandestine maneuverings, there never was an official termination of L. Nathan Hare. That would have required a three-day notice to all board members of a special meeting, written notice of the objective of the meeting, and formal minutes of said meeting. Calls for scrutiny of CAO operations naturally set in motion an internal review, which resulted in the board’s decision to remove six members, not four, in accordance with the by-laws. Two of those dismissed were opposed to the attempts to unseat Mr. Hare. Contrary to the claim that this was not a scheme to get rid of trouble makers, even the four who were secretly maneuvering remained for months after their initial attempts. It’s clear that L. Nathan Hare prefers to settle on the facts and evidence that attest to the true integrity of the CAO and its operations. But in the face of the refusal on the part of accusers to acknowledge facts and evidence, he easily agrees to shift our discussion to the outside forces that at some point moved to take advantage of internal strife within the CAO to advance their own agendas. “I would say that there’s probably an agenda that’s being supported by Jenine Dunn and Jennifer Shank that is much bigger than just the CAO,” he said. He ad-

dressed the political tensions caused by his status as a founding member of the Grassroots organization. “Every time Grassroots comes up, they always throw Nate Hare’s name in the game,” he says. “But I haven’t been to a Grassroots meeting since 1999. I don’t have an attitude against Grassroots, I still support Grassroots people, but I don’t’ allow any political stuff to be done at the CAO. I don’t allow tickets to be sold, no flyers, no endorsements, nobody recruiting volunteers from my staff…I’d rather everybody in Erie and Niagara Counties hate me because I won’t dance with anybody politically. I’d rather that than to put my staff in a position where they’ve gotta be burdened because I sign on with this or that person, who didn’t win, and now all of their people are mad L. Nathan Hare at the CAO. But the Buffalo News continues to put this narrative out – I’m Byron Brown’s friend. Absolutely, for twenty-some years. I’m not gonna stop being his friend because he’s the Mayor of the city. But they keep trying to attack Byron Brown by lacerating me.” He goes on to mention the resentment among some women over the lack of a female head of the CAO in the history of its existence as an obvious irritant. Finally, Mr. Hare acknowledges the expectation of some, that at 69, he should retire. “Whether I’m old or not,” he says through laughter, “I’m still keeping this agency afloat.” Indeed. Amid the sound and fury of this relentless smear campaign, it’s hard to imagine that the CAO is not under investigation by any agency – but it’s not. L. Nathan Hare is well able to put this reprehensible propaganda campaign in perspective: “At the end of the day, this isn’t about me. It’s about the Community Action Organization and the willingness of the Buffalo News to sacrifice this agency. We had a client base in 2018 of 56,000 people that we have served. They keep whining about how much money we get as an agency. We’ve got a $50 million budget. But divide $50 million by 56,000 people. That’s less than a hundred dollars per person that we serve. We’re doing an awful lot of work for an awful lot of people, with relatively little money, given the number of people that we have taken on the responsibility to serve. But you never hear the CAO whining. We just continue to move forward to meet the needs of this community. And to have that work jeopardized so that these people can essentially make some political gain at the CAO’s expense is so despicable that it’s beyond words.”

11 VOICES The Mandella-Tim Horton's Injustice... Rod Watson's column in the March 21 Buffalo News titled, "Tim Hortons coffee shops are everywhere? Not exactly," provided in depth information about the KAT MASSEY.. roadblock Manadella market's Ahmed Saleh is facing in his pursuit to have a Tim Hortons at his second Mandella site. WGRZ online, on March 2 reported, "The owner of Mandella's Market had every indication that Tim Hortons would be located inside his store on Broadway and Jefferson. He spent $2 million to build the store ... with a layout inside for a Tim Hortons...." Mr. Watson included that a Tim Horton's official had responded to Council President Pridgen's support letter to the company. He or she, in part, said Mr. Saleh had been offered the 'chance' to "apply to be a franchisee, provide details on this site and discuss other possible sites." Contrary tpo that claim Saleh told Watson he's open to a ownership OR a franchise arrangement). Since the Mandella II owner already had "every indication" he would have a Tim's, the official's requisition for extensive information is puzzling? Just wondering, what types of details/documentation are needed about the new site for justification of its worthiness that haven't been provided? If they conduct an examination (for attributes, etc.) of a location for a potential shop, is it handled, in person, by their investigator or from afar by Google searches, etc.? Why should Ahmed Saleh have to "discuss other possible sites" when, to repeat, his new building is designed for a Tim's? It has a drive-thru installed in alignment with their requirements. What audacity and insult! A real estate broker told Rod Watson, initially, there was enthusiasm about a "Tim Horton's " at Saleh's site. Then suddenly there wasn't. Hmm! Mr. Saleh, a community-focused, Buffalo State College graduate, has a commendable, successful track record in business. He deserves to be granted the inclusion, under the Tim Hortons' umbrella, of his new location, without further delay not exclusion. He has asked for the community's prayers for his endeavor.

COMMUNITY WATCHDOG Recently the Governor announced the planned $50 million going to the East Side. A headline in the local news read: 'You will see projects coming out of the woodwork." But will the projects represent community concerns? The article does not include perspectives from preservation groups, community activists, or neighborhood associations.

“We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” - John Russwurm, Freedom’s Journal. 1827 America’s 1st Black Newspaper Printed In Canada

How will these groups organize and collaborate with developers to ensure the community has its wants and needs? Will there be more demolitions with shoddy unimaginative structures going up where the representative architectural foundation of the East Side remains? Will parks, green space, and pedestrian safety be a priority in developer plans? What about

public transportation? Will bus routes be improved? Can we have sidewalk snow removal at places of City owned vacant lots where ice and snow pile up until spring melts it? Residents and activists concerned about the East Side should not wait for the developers to say what they are going to do. It is your community, not Ricks, Termini, Paladino, Sina-

tra's etc. It is your tax money coming back to Buffalo that you sent to Albany. You have a say in how the East Side will use this money for your comfort, convenience, and improved quality of life. How can turning 238 Carlton into a food co-op benefit from this? How can the Broadway Fillmore Historic District benefit? How can McCarley Gar-

dens be renovated and not torn down? How can the beautiful churches and temples be saved and repurposed? How can home owners receive the grants and loans they need to repair their homes? How can more historic districts be created? How can foot and bicycle traffic to MLK Jr. Park be improved? You have a right to ask and demand! It is your money and your
