INSIDE ROCHESTER
Mayor Lovely Warren Responds to Hate Crime Arrest In the wake of the arrest of a Rochester man, 24-year-old Rashad Turner, in connection with the viscous attack and beating of a transgender man on Denver Street, 30 year old Samson Tequir, Mayor Lovely Warren released the following statement: Every citizen of Rochester deserves to be able to walk down the street in peace and safety. The recent vicious attack that occurred on a transgender resident of our city was particularly deplorable, not just because of its violent nature, but because it was rooted in hate. There is no place in our city for any type of violence, but violent, hate-driven crimes are particularly abhorrent and unacceptable. This crime was investigated aggressively by the Rochester Police Department and I am grateful that charges have been brought against the suspect involved in this act. In America, our transgender youth and adults are at a far greater risk to be the victims of violence. I want the transgender community here in Rochester to know we will not accept, nor will we ignore, violence perpetuated against them for merely being themselves. I also hope that those in our community who would contemplate violence against any one of our neighbors merely for being who they are will choose not to engage in this behavior knowing that we will be aggressive in our investigation and prosecution of hate-based offenses. In Rochester, we will uphold and protect civil and human rights for all people and we will treat and support all of our citizens equally no matter their race, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation or nation of origin.

NFL Opens Training Camps on Time
W
e are in the middle of a pandemic and NFL Training Camps are opening this week and next. Buffalo Bills rookies reported on Monday and by Wednesday five players tested positive for COVID. One Bills drive is definitely not the place to be now or in the f o r e seeable future. They are getting c a s e s before any team receives t h e i r pads for full contact. I think there will be many more veteran players opting out for the season. My prediction is four games or less will be played in the regular season before Commissioner Roger Goodell will have to halt play until next season. The States of Florida, Texas, California, Tennessee, and Louisiana all have serious COVID problems and too many NFL teams are located in those problematic areas. There were 69 players opting out by the NFL’s speeded up deadline to opt out of the 2020 NFL season. I had projected over 100 players opting out, but that does not mean more players will just shut it down. Buffalo Bills all pro defensive back Tre Davis White stated: “I like the procedures the Bills facility has set up for players health and safety. I have to be extra careful with two little kids back at home in Louisiana, and my wife taking care of them all by herself. It’s a tough time for families and our relatives in Louisiana who can’t stop by for a visit due to state restrictions. On Tre’s contract negotiations with the Bills, he continued: “When my agent and I feel comfortable with an offer that’s when a deal will get done. "
Bills receiver Stefan Diggs: “Every year is a new year and you have to go out and earn it; I’m happy to be here and confident Coaches will put us in best position to win,” I think Josh Allen is in for a rude awakening after 8 games when Stefon starts cussing him out in the huddle for not getting him the ball. The pressure is on Josh to distribute the football to Stefon Diggs, John Brown, and Cole Beasley in order to be successful and keep harmony on the team. The Bills offense must become more explosive and General Manager Brandon Beane has given Josh Allen more weapons and now it’s Continued Page 9

alling her a "fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants," Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, selected California Senator Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate for the 2020 presidential election. "I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021," Biden wrote in an email to his supporters. "I need someone working alongside me who is smart, tough, and ready to lead. Kamala is that person."
He later added, "I need someone who understands that we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. And that if we’re going to get through these crises—we need to come together and unite for a better America. Kamala gets that." Biden made his decision more than a year after Harris, who was also a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, clashed with him over racial issues during the first primary debate. Senator Harris is the nation’s first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party, and only the fourth woman in U.S. history to be chosen for
to keep people safe,” she added. “I’m encouraging everyone to come out . We want to make sure that Buffalo is happy but also that Buffalo is safe.” Although the Funk Fest is a party, planners are hopeful that it will also serve as the beginning of a positive movement in the wake of a pandemic, social unrest, gun violence and an historic presidential election just a few short months away. “We’ve got to start with accountability,” continued Marnetta. “ We’ve got to start with ourselves. We have to ask ‘What can I do to make sure my community is good?’ ” The NICYO Buffalo /Funk Fest Unity Rally is sponsored by: The Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, Organize Buffalo, Carmen Sims, Attorney John Elmore, Geneva’s Auto, Camellia Foods, Tommy Flucker, Power 96.5, CASNY and The Challenger. “I'm all for knowing justice and knowing peace (Know Justice, Know Peace!)," she concluded, “and the only way to know is to engage in listening and talking thru it.”
a presidential ticket. Harris, 55, first responded to the news on social media, tweeting, "I'm honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief." Harris dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president in December 2019 due to a lack of funds. Months later, in March 2020, she endorsed Biden's bid for the presidency, and in the following months was considered a top contender for his VP pick. Now she’s clearly back in the game. -Who Is Kamala Harris? In January 2019 on Martin Luther King Day, California
Democratic Senator Kamala Harris announced that she would be running for president in 2020. Harris chose to launch her full scale campaign on that day to honor the legacies of two of her heroes: Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman ever to run for president, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been a role model for Harris throughout her life. Kamala Devi Harris was born October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother was from India and her father was Jamaican. Reared in a predominantly African-American neighborhood of Berkeley, she was brought to civil rights demonstrations as a toddler and sang in a Baptist choir. Her mother also ensured that Harris and her younger sister, Maya, maintained ties to their Indian heritage by rais-
ing them with Hindu beliefs and taking them to her home country every couple of years. Harris' parents divorced when Continued Page 4
The Honorable Marcus Garvey
Marcus Garvey: 20th Century Freedom Fighter Each August that we celebrate Marcus Garvey’s birthday, we should revisit his contributions and study the works of this great African hero. Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica to Marcus and Sarah Garvey. Marcus Sr., his father, was a descendent of the Maroons. Garvey became one of our true twentieth century freedom fighters. He arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was established as the President General of the UNIA/ ACL, which had a membership of over three million people with more than 300 branches throughout the African World Community. The Garvey Movement was one of the greatest mass movements of African people in the world. Although the external and internal forces and enemies of Garvey caused his demise, the ideas of Garvey and the UNIA/ ACL are still alive. We need to revitalize and resurrect the spirit of Marcus Mosiah Garvey at every opportunity. One special way to honor the memory of Marcus Garvey is for you to proudly display your Red, Black and Green Flag on his birthday, August 17th.

I Am Not A Murderer!
by John Walker, Jr. y name is John Walker, Jr. and I am not a murderer! Even though I was arrested, tried, convicted and served over 22 years in prison, I and my four co-defendants (we were all 16 years old at the time), are completely innocent of the crime of murder that took place in the last hour of New Years Day in Buffalo, New York in 1976. On that night, a White man , William Crawford was murdered near his doorway, across the street from the Golden Nugget Lounge, where he had been celebrating the New Year. According to many witnesses, Mr. Crawford left the bar escorted by his next door neighbor, who had been asked by the barmaid to escort Mr. Crawford to his house because he had a little too much to drink. However when the pair went outside, the neighbor made some excuse about seeing his house door open and ran across the street, leaving Mr. Crawford to walk across Fillmore Ave. and get to his doorway alone, which was directly across the street from the bar. Since both Mr. Crawford’s house and the INNOCENT! John and his two neighbor's house was in plain view while they stood in front sons Maurice (left ) and John 3rd of the bar, it made no sense for the neighbor to run to his house (right) at a recent rally. and leave Mr. Crawford alone on the sidewalk, unless he was setting up an ambush of Mr. Crawford at his side door. That is what we believe happened. The only footprints, other than Mr. Crawford’s, came from behind the neighbor' s house and ended at Mr. Crawford' s side doorway, where he was beaten to death! Yet the neighbor was

“The World is Watching” Amnesty International Reports on US Mass Violations by Police
Amnesty International USA has released a report documenting widespread and egregious human rights violations by police officers against protesters, medics, journalists and legal observers who gathered to protest the unlawful killings of Black people by the police and to call for systemic reform in May and June of 2020. The report, The World is Watching: Mass Violations by US Police of Black Lives Matter Protesters’ Rights, builds on Amnesty’s interactive mapping of violence against protesters and new findings on the use of lethal force by the police. It is the most comprehensive human rights analysis of police violence against protesters to date. “The report from Amnesty is a very important report that in fact helps to document what we know to be persistent problems with policing in the U.S., especially when there is political opposition,” said Ajamu Baraka, an international human rights activist.
Oprah Magazine Erects Billboards of Breonna Taylor in Lousiville: It’s been 147 days—and counting—since Breonna Taylor was brutally gunned down by police in her sleep. 147 days without justice. For the first time ever, Oprah Magazine featured someone other than Oprah on its cover. That person was Breonna Taylor. In July, protesters led by the Until Freedom organization, organized a massive protest on the front lawn of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron that resulted in the arrest of over 80 peaceful protesters. We will say her name and we will get justice for Breonna. 7-Year-Old Georgia Boy Dies From Complications of COVID-19
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a 7-year-old Black boy from Savannah who had no chronic health conditions is the youngest person in the state to have died from the disease. Half of all of the state of Georgia’s COVID-19 deaths are African Americans, who only make up one-third of the population.
never ruled a suspect or questioned by the police. Why was he not questioned? I don't know but we do know that the neighbor was the last known person to see Mr. Crawford alive. We (my four friends and I) believed all along that we were sought out and arrested because we all, except our friend Tyrone Woodruff, had been arrested of petty crimes in the past such as purse snatchings and auto theft. We believe we were rounded up and questioned by the police not because they had eye witnesses or evidence to link us to the crime; but because we were known to the police and to the neighborhood as troublemakers. The only “evidence” the police and the district attorney had that implicated us, was the scared and coerced confession of our friend, Tyrone Woodruff, who was told that if he did not take the deal and said that we all were guilty, one of the rest of us would take that deal and would go free. That was a lie but Tyrone, after days of threats and deprivation of food and water, broke down and confessed to a crime of murder that neither he nor the rest of us committed! Tyrone Woodruff was not charged and he was told to get out of Buffalo and he left town. Floyd Martin hired a gifted young lawyer named James A.W. McLeod and he was found not guilty. The three of us who were left, Darryn Gibson, Darryl Boyd and I, were appointed incompetent public defenders and we all were found guilty and spent decades in prison for a murder that none us committed. Tyrone Woodruff has recanted his forced confession at least twice but the DA has refused to consider it.
On Friday, August 14 ( Darryl Boyd's 61st birthday), there will be a support rally to Vacate Indictment 41-413 and to support Justice For the Buffalo 5. The rally will be held at 3 P.M. in Lafayette Square, in downtown Buffalo. I am asking the community to come out and support our effort to get this unjust and wrongful murder conviction overturned! I am the father of two sons, Maurice Walker and John Walker III. I do not want to leave this earth and have their father's and their names still connected to a miscarriage of justice. Their father is no murderer! I want my name cleared for them and their future children! Please support the fight for justice for the Buffalo 5!

As a member of Bethel AME Church, Janiya donates the gift of time to the church’s Young People’s Division serving Thanksgiving meals to residents at Viva La Casa, a refugee shelter. They also prepare meals in Cook for Kids at Ronald McDonald House. The Performing Arts School graduate will attend North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro and major in journalism and mass communications. "My future goal is to work in sports media and own a media production company,” said Janiya." This will help me give back to my community with employment and as many other opportunities as I can for minorities.” After World War II, more than 100 African Americans retuning to Buffalo were not welcome to join existing American Legion posts. They formed the Bennett-Wells American Legion Post, established in 1946. In 1955, community-builder Lillian E. Hundley and friends founded the BennettWells A.L. She was active in many community projects—William-Emslie YMCA, Diocesan Educational Center, Fire Survival Program and her neighborhood block club. “As an active member of our auxiliary, her dream was to establish a scholarship fund to help with college expenses, she would periodically remind us of that,” said Delores Ross-Williams, president, Bennett-Wells A.L. Congratulations Dr. Ansari! As CEO of the Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc., Dr. LaVonne Ansari is leading a multi-site federally qualified health center that is expanding services for patients throughout Erie and Niagara counties. In February 2020, Dr. Ansari was number I 53 on Business First's ranking of Powerful People. In July 2020, she landed the 47th spot on their list of Power 150 Women. Here's why: This distinguished recognition is due to her tireless work to provide health care to the uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable, especially in communities of color. Under her leadership, the Community Health Center of Buffalo has grown exponentially from a single site health center on the grounds of ECMC to a premier primary health care provider serving an estimated 25,000 patients in communities across Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Lockport and Niagara Falls. Staff have collectively administered thousands of Covid-19 tests and are currently testing daily at all four sites and on a mobile medical unit. In March 2020, Dr. Ansari was elected Chair of the Community Health Center Association of New York State (CHCANYS) Board of Directors. It is the statewide voice of advocacy for more than 70 health centers that operate over 800 sites and serves more than two million patients annually. These health centers are federally funded and operate under the Health Resources Services and Administration, (HRSA) guidelines. She is the first African American Muslim woman to lead the board of this organization. Congratulations Dr. Ansari!

_____________________________
Please take notice that on the 13th day of July, 2020 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law. The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 13th day of July, 2020. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County. EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such
liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof. PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services, and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption. RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 1st day of September, 2020 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument. LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 1st day of September, 2020. SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Every household counted contributes to their community’s funding for critical public services like healthcare, special needs, and public transportation. Census takers are now visiting homes to help households respond to the 2020 Census. All census takers will be wearing masks and following local safety guidelines. This is your chance to make a change, don’t miss it! It’s not too late.
