Protesting an Almost George Floyd Moment on Kenmore Avenue n July 9, Eric Martin Jr., O 30 years old, went into the Speedway Gas Mart on Ken-

more Avenue near Englewood after work, where he purchased gas and two scratch off tickets and went home. The next morning he woke up and realized he had two $50 winners. Martin, accompanied by his wife and two children, went back to the store the next day to redeem his prize. Instead he experienced a near “George Floyd* moment." Appearing on the Buffalo On PROTEST! Among those pictured during Tuesday's protest at Fire talk show last Saturday Speedway was Eric Martin Sr. (front left) and activist Charley H. (right) who, along with the family, is leading the protests. morning on Power 96.5 WUFO Fisher Challenger Photo Radio, Eric Martin Sr. his father, called it a “nightmare situation,” and said that he was “still in disbelief” over what happened to his son. “If it happened to us it can happen to anybody," the well known entertainment promoter in WNY added. "It's a parent's worst nightmare." Here’s the scenario he shared: When his son Eric Jr. and his family went to redeem his winning tickets, he was paid $50 for one ticket and told the second ticket didn’t register. The manager asked him where he got the ticket from. He told her that he purchased it at their Speedway establishment the day before. At one point the police were called and seven police officers showed up - including three detectives. “ Four police officers and three detectives show up on a call for a Black man with a scratch off!?!” exclaimed Martin. They asked for his ID and he questioned why, insisting that he had a right to ask, but was told “we ask the questions around here. ” The young Martin, ultimately produced his ID which showed that he lived right around the corner from Speedway in a home he and his wife had just recently purchased. You would think right about now common sense would kick in continued Eric Sr., but then they tell him they want him to go with them to the police station. His son initially rebuffs the “offer” explaining that he’s never been in trouble before. “You mean like you want me to get into the back of the police car? Or do you want me to meet you there?” he said paraphrasing his son. They say no, we want you to get in the back of the police car. Eric still wants to know why and points out that he has his wife and children with him. Now it gets physical. They cuff him. He’s standing up in handcuffs and defenseless when four officers pick him up and slam him .He’s still handcuffed. Now they’re on top of him. At one point one of the officers appears to be doing a martial arts maneuver on his ribs while another officer has his elbow on Eric’s neck and he’s trying to cover his mouth. This and more, he said, is all on video. “When I get there my son is already gone. They’ve charged him with resisting arrest and possession of stolen property,” Eric Sr. noted. -ProtestWhat’s not on video is what happened to Eric when he was taken to the Tonawanda Police Headquarters on Sheridan Drive, said activist and close family friend Charley H. Fisher who has been leading the protests in front of Speedway since last week. “There he was stripped-searched in the presence of a female officer,” Fisher revealed. -Apologies Ring HollowEric Sr. called (Speedway) corporate and talked to them and they gave him a case number and said the would get back to him. They also viewed the video. “ A few hours later I get a call from the Tonawanda police saying they wanted to apologize, that they made a mistake and wanted to drop all the charges against my son,” said Martin. “But their apologies ring hollow,” Fisher added. “This (protest and call for justice) is for Little 8-year-old Trevor, Eric Jr.'s son, who saw his father being accosted by police and subdued - he’s traumatized. “This has also been a teaching moment,” the long time community activist continued. Fannie Lou Hamer Civil Rights, Voting Rights Activist

S

easoned by her early struggles-the youngest of 20 children born in 1917 who contracted polio as a child -and by years of sharecropping under the Mississippi sun, Fannie Lou Hamer (born Townsend) became a fearless stalwart of civil rights. She left school after the sixth grade to help her family in the cotton fields. In 1942 she married Perry "Pap" Hamer, also a sharecropper. A mother of four, Hamer attended a meeting held by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1962. There she learned that African Americans could register to vote-and that injustices were being commit ted against them when they attempted to do so. After her own first attempt to register, Hamer was evicted from the plantation where she worked and lived. Death threats and attempts on her life followed. She persevered, and prevailed. However she suffered immensely for her efforts, including being jailed and beaten so brutally that she incurred permanent vision and kidney damage. Undaunted, courageous, and outspoken, Hamer worked tirelessly with SNCC to educate and register Black voters and went on to cofound the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and to organize food cooperatives and day care centers. At the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Hamer spoke powerfully of her personal journey. In fact, passage of the Voting Rights Act of

1965 by President Lyndon Johnson was influenced by her defiant words. Fannie Lou Hamer's most notable expression was "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired." She died in 1977.

A Film About a Pandemic in the Midst of a Pandemic

Addison Henderson’s Film G.O.D. Makes its World Premiere at the 24th Annual American Black Film Festival!

A

ward winning filmmaker and hometown native, Addison Henderson’s feature film G.O.D. (GIVERS OF DEATH, shot here in the city of Buffalo) will be making its World Premiere as one of the official selectedfeatures of the 2020 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) that begins Friday August 21 through Sunday August 30. The festival is widely considered the preeminent pipeline for Black artists in front of and behind the camera and a platform for emerging Black artists many of whom have become today’s most successful in Hollywood like Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) Issa Rae (Insecure) Omari Hardwick (Power) and countless others.

Filmmaker Addison Henderson

SUPPORT OURADVERTISERS!

The film G.O.D. (Givers of Death) is an apocalyptic, urban sci-fi tale of redemption and an entire city’s quest for peace in a world where a virus has wiped out one third of the earth’s population. With no cure in sight and imminent, painful death befalling all victims, those who are too afraid to end their own lives hire hitmen knows as Givers to bring them relief and peace. We spoke to the filmmaker about what it was like having his first feature as an official selection in this year’s American Black Film Festival. “Being in the ABFF was always part of my plan when I made this film. So many people of high regard have gotten their start at this festival.” Henderson reflected on his days as a volunteer at ABFF and his dream to make the competition. “God knows I’ve tried over the years with various short films but deep inside I knew it would be my feature that would get accepted.” Sixteen years ago, the filmmaker screened his first narrative documentary Forgotten City with Korey Green at ABFF but missed the deadline for the competition “We would have won had we made the deadline…But now is the time for me and my team and this movie.”

Henderson's goal with the film is clear despite the uncanny timing of its debut. “ With the film, I wanted people to examine the meaning to life, question the universe, question God, and really think about what peace means to them … What I didn’t know is when I was writing a movie about a pandemic we would be living in one.” The emerging filmmaker has plans for more projects that include bringing more productions to the City of Buffalo and is hopeful to snag a win at this year's ABFF. . “I have so many stories to tell, so many Buffalo stories I’m thankful that my plan worked out. Hopefully your hometown boy comes away with an award”! You can log in to ABFF. com to register on Aug 21 for a free community pass that gives access to a wide selection of featured narratives, shorts documentaries, web series and over 30 celebrity conversations, panels and seminars for the festival duration. On August 30 be sure to log in to ABFF.com or IMDB.com by 8pm for the pre-recording of the ABFF award show hosted by Boris Kodjoe & Nicole Ari Parker with celebrity presenters where you can find out if his film G.O.D. wins any awards

as well as enjoy closing night virtual parties. Henderson said that after the ABFF premiere, the production team will be looking to secure distribution for the film. He is currently participating in the Producers Guild of America Power of Diversity Master Workshop. His supernatural action television series, THE HEALER, was

one of only ten projects selected for the 2020 program. Good Luck Addison! ~l.h. You can also keep up with this filmmaker and the festival on social media @nightowlrepublicfilms @americanblackfilmfestival

n Wednesday, August 12, 2020, in an executive board meeting the Dorie Miller Rifle & Pistol Club Inc. voted unanimously to support MVP in its nation-wide campaign to have the TIAHRT Amendment repealed. The TIAHRT Amendment impacts greatly on the accessibility of African American youth and other marginalized people of color having easy access to illegal handguns that they do not manufacture nor have a license to sale. Yet, the criminal burden of responsibility is theirs alone to bear. Today thousands of young men and women are incarcerated serving long sentences due to this easy access and in our inner- city communities, in the midst of a pandemic, bullet riddled bodies continue to pile up. We urge the community to think about this and sign the petition to repeal the TIAHRT Amendment and go online to the CRS Report for Congress Dated May 27, 2009 to understand why we must urge those we put in office to accomplish this objective. (Note: The Martins say they have reason to suspect there also may be a scam operation taking place at that location and want the manager fired. * George Perry Floyd Jr. was the

Black man killed during an arrest after allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. He was hand-cuffed, slammed to the ground. A white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes as he died pleading for his life Two others held him down. The video of his murder went viral and led to world-wide "Black Lives Matter" protests which still continue).

A Teacher’s Lesson Plan for Re-opening Schools Da cat in da big white house trying to gangsta da block.

F

By Jennifer Earle Strickland Part I or a 2-Part Series

or the last five months, I’ve listened, observed, and engaged in both generic and high-spirited conversations on everything Covid-19. It seems that everybody from politicians, to parents, to preachers; dieticians, day-care providers, and teachers, and everybody in-between, has something to say about this issue. As one of many teachers who’ve taught, virtually, during the ‘Covid edition’ of the 2019-2020 school year, and who now provides educational enrichment through the Extended School Year program, I deem myself a primary resource and witness to many of the factors, bullet points, and considerations of the massive project of re-opening schools, in the midst of this international crisis. Teachers, most often, are deductive reasoners. We begin with logical thinking, a general idea, and seek to find a specific conclusion. We develop a hypothesis, or statement that we hope or believe will be proven true, then develop a process through which we also hope to reach a logical conclusion that supports, or rejects, the hypothesis. Teachers map out ideas, processes, materials, and assessments, through the creation of lesson plans. These plans include the consideration of all learners, at all levels, and must have one particular goal; that each child meets the standard set forth in the objective. Here is my Lesson Plan for Re-opening Buffalo’s Schools: Mission: All stakeholders will, collaboratively, comprise a comprehensive, decipherable plan to reopen schools in Buffalo, New York, after carefully focused consideration is applied to each of the aspects of the process. Objective: To re-open schools, both public and private, in Buffalo, NY, after being closed for an extended period of time, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and its affects on the Western New York Community. Audience: The community of “Stakeholders” (see “Materials”, below) Standard: Consideration of NYS Dept. of Education’s Social Studies Framework – 1)Gathering, Interpreting and Using Evidence 2)Chronological Reasoning and Causation (3 is not applicable) 4) Geographic Reasoning 5)Economics and Economic Systems 6)Civic Participation Materials (Human Resources/”Stakeholders”, in alphabetical order): Administrators, Board of Education members, Bus Drivers, Cafeteria Staff. Engineering and Custodial Staff, Medical Professionals, Parents, Student Support Teams (Guidance Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, etc.), Students, Teachers (and Aides and Assistants), Technology Teams; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); Physical/Social Distancing The Process: We operate within a 24-hr. schedule, or, one day at a time. Within these hours, we eat, sleep, work, enjoy recreational activities, and rest. We will consider this factor when discussing the re-opening needs of each focus group Focus 1 – Children/Students – general daily pattern: Rise; hygiene; might eat @ home; walk to school, or bus stop •Who/what conditions are children leaving at home, or taking to school? •Is someone monitoring the walk to school, or bus stop locations to assure students maintain at least 6’ between them, and are wearing required masks? •Upon boarding the bus, who will properly distance students, in seats? Will there be a bus aide assigned to every bus to assure compliance of seating and the continued wearing of PPE? For obvious reasons, this responsibility must not be left to the bus driver. •Will daily precautions be taken (temperature checks, distribution of masks, etc.), as students enter the building, even at multiple entrances (if used)? •How will students receive breakfast/lunch? Will children eat breakfast/lunch in school? Where? If in classrooms, will safety be assured as students remove masks to eat? •What is the amount of time that students are expected to be in their classrooms, wearing masks? If so, when will masks be allowed to be removed? Classroom separation and use of PPE – How will these be addressed, per grade levels? Grades Pre-K – 4 (Primary) – a very active group of students; classes don’t, generally, exceed 20-25 students, and may be the most likely to abide by the rules, especially if teachers create a game or entertaining learning activity that support the use of PPE and recommended practices Grades 5 – 6 (Middle School) – students who are ‘coming of age’ and establishing who they are; they begin to flock with students of similar character and commonalities; extended period of separation, within the classroom, may be difficult as, since Pre K, they’ve been encouraged, and assigned, to work in small groups Grades 7 – 8 (Junior High School) – the ‘upper class’ of elementary school; opinionated; all of the characteristics of the middle school students x 2; often defiant, yet sensitively emotional; inquisitive about their environment (never afraid to ask “Why?”); enforcing of distancing and use of PPE for prolonged periods will likely be very challenging Grades 9 – 12 (High School) – the ‘Jr. adults-who-know-just-as-much-if-not-more-thanadults’; all of the middle schools students’ traits x 10; personal destiny controllers; independent thinkers and operators, yet will follow and support others of the same mindset; if a few responsible leaders can be determined in these groups, there might be a much greater chance of PPE and distancing compliance

Clap Back! Register and Vote!

M

ake it plain. Trump trying to set the stage to steal the election. He is banking on a lot of our seniors not being able to get out and vote because of long lines and the virus. I am not here to preach to the choir. I rock with the people. When I say clap back that does not mean violence. In this case to clap back means VOTE! GET REGISTERED! NOW! I believe the people that will make the difference will be the hood. Don’t let my work and church stuff fool you. My heart bleeds with the block. I’m talking about people they do not expect to the vote. Felons, people on parole supervision, people who think their voice doesn’t matter. We need JESSE these people to fill in the gap at the polls for our seniors who cannot carry us this time. Its our turn to give back. DOYLE If you need help text me. 716- 986-5450. I will come to you personally. Get you registered and take the paperwork in myself. •Election day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. •The deadline to register online to vote is Friday, October 9, 2020. •The deadline for registering by mail to vote is (postmarked by) Friday, October 9, 2020. •The deadline to register in person to vote is Friday, October 9, 2020. •The deadline to request a ballot by mail is (received by) Tuesday, October 27, 2020. •The early voting period runs from Saturday, October 24, 2020 to Sunday, November 1, 2020, but dates and hours may vary based on where you live. In New York, the general rule is that you can vote after incarceration for a felony conviction, or while you are on probation. The bottom line: as long as you're outside of prison walls you can vote. In these cases, your voting rights are automatically restored, but you have to re-register in order to vote. People clap back in a lot of ways. Some buss they gun, some drop the mike. I just let the pen bleed. But in this case we have to vote. jessedoyle@gmail.com

Where Have They All Gone? Dear Editor: I once again found myself reading the latest issue of the Challenger, reading articles exposing the continued injustices that unfortunately continue to take place against people of color here in Buffalo, the supposed "City of Good Neighbors," and ask myself where have our leaders gone? Where have the Black lawyers gone? When I was much younger, when injustice lifted its ugly head, when we as a people were not given our due, leaders such as Delmar Mitchell, George K. Arthur, Herbert Bellamy, David Collins, Arthur 0. Eve, Minnie Gillette, Beverly Gray, to name a few, did not sit on the side lines. They did not remain silent, they did not appear when they thought it was safe and come out to give a lukewarm statement, and then hide in the shadows. The Black lawyers of that day had backbone. Barbara Sims, Ray Ellis Green, William Sims, Sam Green. Their young protege's even stood by their sides, and fought for that which was right. They fought for justice and against injustice. Terrance McKelvey, Judge Ogden, Judge Mccloud, Charles Davis, John Hargrave, David Hampton, to name a few. As I did every week when I taught school, and as I continue to do today, in my effort to keep them up to date on what is happening in our community, I read and explain what I have read to my grandchildren, just as I did with my children. I do this so 'they will never forget where we have come from as a people in this City. So that they will know our accomplishments. What continues to disturb me is the seemed lack of engagement, the lack of concern for the injustices that have destroyed the lives of the young men called the "Buffalo 5". It would appear that if you ask for comment from our elected officials {but for the Council President) there is silence, as if they know nothing about what has happened to these young men. When it comes to former Police Officer Cariol Horne, they speak words, but no REAL action is had. When stories are reported concerning the legal status of these cases, from the names given, it would appear that NOT ONE lawyer of color is involved. Where are they? Does the Black lawyers organization still exist, and if so where are they? As the country watches what happens, or more importantly, that which is not being done, and who is not doing it, our children and my grandchildren ask me, "grandma, where have they all gone?" All I can do is shake my head and answer, I don't know. Oh, how I long for those days. -E. Blackshear

_____________________________

Please take notice that on the 13th day of July, 2020 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law. The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 13th day of July, 2020. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County. EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such

liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof. PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services, and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption. RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 1st day of September, 2020 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument. LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 1st day of September, 2020. SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Black Farmers Market and the Ujamaa Vendor Village!

The Black Farmers Market and the Ujamaa Vendor Village is now located at 1100 Jefferson, at the Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium Complex. (See our ad this page). The Market and Vendor Village was proud to present the first Africaribana Kiddies Mas Camp and Carnival Car Parade recently. Drawing inspiration from the Caribbean carnival, we created our space into a mask making and car decorating mas camp. August is emancipation month in the Caribbean, UK and Canada and we taught the children the history of our ancestors from the Caribbean through arts and activity. We also spotlighted the steelpan and celebrated "World Steelpan Day" which was Aug 11th with a special performance by Caribbean Explosion. The Carnival Car Parade started at E. Ferry and Jefferson and ended on Broadway and Jefferson at the 2nd location of the Farmers Market and Vendors Village.. It was sponsored by Power 96.5fm which programmed an hour of carnival music live on the radio so all the participants in the Car parade could tune into and party together. At the end of the parade we took a moment to honor Funso the clown with an award from the Ujamaa Vendor Village and the Juneteenth on Jefferson Committee for International Clown Week which was Aug 1-Aug 7. -Submitted by Dewitt Lee III

Don’t let an undercount erase the ones you love. Communities are as rich and diverse as their needs. That’s why completing the 2020 Census matters. Every household counted contributes to their community’s funding for critical public services like healthcare, special needs, and public transportation. Census takers are now visiting homes to help households respond to the 2020 Census. All census takers will be wearing masks and following local safety guidelines. This is your chance to make a change, don’t miss it! It’s not too late.

Complete the census at:
