Rochester Summer Soul Festival: The Finale of The Summer !

S

ummer’s almost over, so that means that it’s time for the Rochester Summer Soul Festival, which will be taking over Frontier Field this Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24.

Celebrating its 24th anniversary this year, the festival has showcased such legendary talent as George Clinton, Cameo, Angie Stone, Charlie Wilson, Patti Labelle and Bobby Brown, among many others. This year’s line-up is no exception as it features Bell Biv Devoe (the New Edition off-shoot celebrates their 30th anniversary this year !), Guy, Keke Wyatt, Christopher Williams, Shanice, Lil Mo and Michel’le on Saturday the 24th, respectively. “When we do the shows we try to come up with a theme,“ said promoter Varick Baiyina of Experience Events, LLC who is handling the event for a second consecutive year. “ Last year, we had an old school theme one day with George Clinton, Morris Day & The Time and a neo-soul day. This year we’re going with a new jack swing type theme.” Baiyina said that planning of the event starts at least seven months to a year out explaining that organizing with sponsors and partners as well as booking the headliners is a time sensitive process: “We have to book the headliners before the year is out because if we don’t, you won’t get the dates for the summer festivals.” The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with the Summer Soul Tailgate Music Experience which will feature the finest local talent as well as a performance by Chubb Rock in the Frontier Field VIP Lot. Saturday’s events start with a Community Block Club Party from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. in the Frontier Field VIP Lot with a back to school Back Pack giveaway before the Stone Soul Saturday Concert gets underway in Frontier Field Stadium at 5p.m. “They’re calling the Rochester Summer Soul festival the finale of the summer," said Baiyina who graciously acknowledged the partnership with the City of Rochester and mayor Lovely A. Warren in presenting the event. “There’s so many different things going on in the summer, we realize that we’re not always going to be first priority but if we put together a great show people will at least mark it on the calendar and plan to come. Rochester and the Western New York region [might buy the tickets] slow but they always show up."

The CopperTown Court Battle: One Block Club’s Quest for Power and Respect!

E

ast Side citizens want power and respect! To get the power and respect citizens know they deserve, the CopperTown Block Club filed a 78 petition against Ellicott Development and the City of Buffalo Planning Board. The Honorable Judge Mark J. Grisanti heard the case on August 1st. CopperTown lost the court battle but not because our cause was unjust, to the contrary, who with any conscience would deny Montessori school children the right to walk to the public library in safety? Who would put their own financial gain above the health of residents? Who would be so arrogant as to ignore the voice of a community and assume they should be happy about extractive development that will hasten gentrification? We lost because the developer and city argued that we the petitioners would not be directly harmed by the proposed project. So we are asking Challenger readers to ascertain the validity of our struggle for justice! Financial harm: Besides paying our taxes, we also improved our property with renovations and landscaping. Unlike other parts of the city, we have seen very little return on our real estate investment. We believe the major reason for that small return has been the lack of reinvestment by others in the CopperTown neighborhood. Imagine this! What if the CopperTown Block Club was allowed to invest the city and county taxes

that were paid from 1989 to the present? We probably could have built a neighborhood supermarket (we still won’t have one after 201 Ellicott is developed), provided startup money for development of the African American Heritage Co-op, enhanced The CopperTown neighborhood with public gardens, signage and art, been able to spur economic development by giving micro loans to encourage small business development on Broadway/William/ Clinton and created an incubator for young entrepreneurs in the Towne Gardens Plaza. Harm to quality of life (health, happiness, and safety) But instead of development that improves our lives we are still looking at the city garage and smelling garbage! What development have we gotten after living in the area for 30 years? A liquor store that sells

low grade alcohol, a gas station that charges a fee if you use anything but cash, a market that is dirty, noisy, a visual eyesore and is open 24 hours a day seven days a week! What do we have to look forward to? a Tim Hortons that will have a drive through parking lot that is too small for the project, has too many curb cuts and is not safe for other drivers, pedestrians, those using alternative transportation like a bike or scooter and those taking public transportation. This project will cause congestion, increase the number of accidents (currently we have about one a week), generate more garbage, increase air pollution due to idling cars, increase vehicular traffic, decrease walkability and add to adverse health outcomes by providing fast food like doughnuts and microwaved sandwiches rather than Continued Page 10

Purple Heart Recipient To Recount Vietnam Experiences Roland Hayes, a Vietnam veteran honored in a special ceremony at Buffalo's Purple Heart Memorial two weeks ago, will talk about his combat experiences at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. Hayes, 71, earned three Purple Hearts after arriving in Vietnam in 1967. In one incident, a bullet ricocheted off his machine gun and ripped through his right leg; in another, he was shot in the left leg; and the third time, grenade shrapnel left a permanent scar on his face. He also earned a Bronze Star for distinguished heroic service. Though he'd received his medals by mail years ago, Hayes was publicly honored by Rep. Brian Higgins at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park Roland Hayes in advance of National Purple Heart Day on Aug. 7. He'll recount his experiences at a meeting of the Dorie Miller Rifle and Pistol Club, named for the African American messman who became a Navy hero during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Dr. King Gives 'I Have A Dream' Speech Aug. 28,1963 Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on this day in 1963, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to more than 250,000 people who had come to Washington to demonstrate on behalf of equal rights and, specifically, for passage of the civil rights bill, then languishing in Congress. At the time, the peaceful interracial rally — officially called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom — was the largest assembly for a redress of grievances ever held in the nation’s capital. King gave the keynote speech. With the marble statue of Abraham Lincoln as a backdrop, King said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.' I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. ..." "And when this happens, and when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, `Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’” He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis.

Stacey Abrams Says She’d Serve as VP By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia The overcrowded Democratic presidential field has a record six women seeking the nomination. But one prominent individual who isn’t running for the top job has thrown her hat into the ring for vice president. Former Georgia Gubernatorial Candidate Stacey Abrams said she would be delighted to serve under one of the 22 candidates. “I would be honored to be considered by any nominee,” Abrams told The New York Times on Wednesday, Aug. 14. “I’ve just come to the decision that my best value and, the strongest contribution I can give to this primary, would be to make sure our nominee is coming into an environment where there are strong voter protections in place,” Abrams told the Times. I would not have publicly raised the possibility if it was not a legitimate thought,” Abrams said. She said the current field, which includes former Vice President Joe Biden; Calif. Sen. Kamala Harris; New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker; and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, is talented. Earlier this year when Biden entered the race, he was reportedly considering Abrams as a running mate.

Lead-Contaminated Drinking Water Crisis in Newark

RACIST ARREST: Two White police officers who led a Black man by a rope down a street in Galveston, Texas, this month will not face criminal charges, the authorities said. Donald Neely, 43, who relatives say is mentally ill and has often slept on the streets, was arrested Aug. 3 on a criminal trespassing charge. When a police vehicle was not immediately available, mounted officers escorted him by rope to a nearby staging area, the police said. The scene was captured in a photograph by an onlooker and shared widely on social media, drawing national outrage as it evoked images of slavery and the long history of racism and violence by whites against Black people. NYT PRAY FOR PEACE

The levels of lead in Newark, New Jersey’s drinking water are some of the highest recently recorded by a large water system in the United States. The cause: City and state officials are violating the Safe Drinking Water Act in several ways, such as failing to treat its water to prevent lead from flaking off from pipes into residents’ drinking water and neglecting to notify people about the elevated levels and the health risks. Experts agree that there is no safe level of lead exposure. Pregnant women and children are most at risk: Even low lead levels are associated with serious, irreversible damage to developing brains and nervous systems. Lead exposure is also linked to fertility issues, cardiovascular and kidney problems, cognitive dysfunction, and elevated blood pressure in

otherwise healthy adults.

NYPD Fires Officer in 2014 Chokehold Death of Eric Garner Victim's Dying Words "I cant' breathe" Helped Galvanize the Black Lives Matter Movement

The New York City police officer whose chokehold led to Eric Garner’s death in 2014 was fired from the Police Department and stripped of his pension benefits on Monday, ending a bitter battle that had cast a shadow over the nation’s largest police force. Commissioner James P. O’Neill’s decision to dismiss the officer, Daniel Pantaleo, came five years after Mr. Garner’s dying words — “I can’t breathe” — helped to galvanize the Black Lives Matter protests that led to changes in policing practices in New York and around the country. Officer Pantaleo had held on to his job as the Staten Island district attorney and the Justice Department declined to charge him with a crime. Outside Police Headquarters, Mr. Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, joined supporters in the afternoon to demand that the mayor and the police commissioner also fire the 11 other police officers who took part in her son’s arrest. Only one — Sgt. Kizzy Adonis, who was the first supervisor to arrive on the scene — faces disciplinary charges.

A Few Reasons to Add Bananas to Your Diet • Poor digestion. Bananas are an excellent source of prebiotics, or non-digestible carbohydrates that act as food for gut bacteria and improve digestion. • More energy. Rich in glucose, the most easily digestible source of sugar, bananas will provide energy before, during, and after your workout. • Fight disease. Foods with large amounts of carotenoids such as bananas have been shown to protect against chronic disease, including certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. • Improved vision. Bananas contain vitamins A & C, which are both shown to be eye and skin-healthy nutrients.

A TRIBUTE TO BUFFALO’S KING OF FUNK N’ ROLL!

T

his weekend the 15th annual NICYO Funk Fest returns with three days of partying leading up to the much anticipated celebration and tribute to Rick James, Buffalo’s own King of "Funk n' Roll" in LaSalle Park this Saturday. “We are actually very glad to put the celebration in the community in a bigger way,” said organizer Marnetta Malcolm. The entire weekend, she said, promises to be fun and exciting. •On Thursday, August 22 Barbara Miller Williams is hosting the Cold Spring Reunion in MLK Park from 4-8 p.m. •On Friday, August 23, the pre-Funk Fest NICYO Jefferson Avenue Street Party will rock between Utica and Glenwood from 6-10 p.m. Now in its 3rd year, it grows bigger, better and more popular each summer. Marnetta said that after seeing Zapp perform (“they were really, really good” she commented), she felt they would be a perfect fit to headline the Funk Fest. Plus, they used to tour together with Rick, she revealed. Considered one of the most underrated funk groups of the 1980s, Zapp (also knkown

bel Sims Gladden was a small elegant woman of great dignity and strength.” She also opened his eyes and ears to great music, as he recalled how she took him on her rounds to East Side nightclubs in an era when the likes of Etta James, Miles Davis and John Coltrane performed here regularly. Rick attended Public School #53, played in the Bennett High School band, and sang in street corner groups with lifelong friends, Levi Ruffin and Jimmie Steward. He joined the Navy Reserve at 15 but ended up going AWOL soon after. He fled to Canada, and it was there, in Toronto, that he founded his first group, the Mynah Birds with future Buffalo Springfield members). It was at this point that he became known as Rick James. Being the nephew of the Temptations’ Melvin Franklin, Rick was no stranger to Motown, and he and his band were signed to the label in the mid-sixties. Although the group recorded a couple of tracks, nothing was ever released. Not easily deterred, Rick went to London where he formed the blues band “The Main Line.” He commuted between London and North America for the next seven years. In 1977 he finally returned to the US completely, forming The Stone City Band with which he experimented at mixing rock and funk - creating “funk ‘n’ roll.” When he approached Ber-

A Brief Interview With Rick James’ Brother Leroi Johnson

L

eroi Johnson, Rick James’ brother and former manager, was recently named to the Class of 2019 Buffalo Music Hall of Fame for his work as manager of his brother Rick, The Mary Jane Girls, Process and the Doo Rags, Val Young along with managing the music publishing and as well as working with Eddie Murphy, Teena Marie, Temptations, Big Daddy Cane and many other known entertainers through their company Mary Jane Productions. We spoke with Leroi this week about the upcoming Funk Fest and 15th annual tribute to Rick. Q:It’s been 15 years since Rick made his transition and this marks the 15th successful Funk Fest celebrating his life. What does this say to you about who Rick was? A:Rick is a Buffalo boy and a Buffalo success story. Most of the people involved in his operation were from Buffalo. He reached deep into the community providing community services while he was here and supported many community endeavors but the main thing is we grew up here during a time where everybody knew us and knew him as James Johnson and when he became successful he continued to acknowledge his community and the City of Buffalo as his home. Q: What’s your fondest memory of Rick? A: We had many fond memories growing up together in the Perry and Willert Park Projects... there’s really no one special memory. Q: Rick was ahead of his time not only with his music, but his reputation for loving “Mary Jane” – what do you think Rick would say about the current legalization movement for cannabis ? A: To him it was always legal .It’s definitely part of him being ahead of his time… it was a big thing with him smoking marijuana on stage, we were threatened to be arrested in every city …. And we would do it anyway ...funny but a popular slogan used by Obama During his election to ignite his follows… was Rick's favorite saying during his concerts -“Fire It Up!” Q: Why should folks come out this Saturday? A: Why not? This is a tradition that has been going on for 15 years and the only way to keep the memory alive is to come out ... or as Rick would say, “come to funk out!” (Leroi also expressed great appreciation to Marnetta Malcolm for her role in keeping Rick’s memory alive thru the Funk Fest.)

Put down the guns for this day. No violence on this day. On Monday, September 2nd stay in your own community and support Black business to show our economic strength. Since this is Labor Day, take time to honor the sacrifice of our ancestors who worked as unpaid captive laborers for hundreds of years. Their labor built this country.” She continued: " I would hope that this would continue. COPPERTOWN COURT BATTLE

PRAISE THE RED, THE BLACK AND THE GREEN: Delegates from UNIA-ACL Division #433 in Buffalo are pictured above with Dr. Julius Garvey (2nd from left) and Division Chaplain Dewitt Lee (center). Lion Blyden and his wife are pictured right.

Praise The Red, The Black and the Green!

"Our affiliation with the UNIA was brought about after a thorough understanding that its principles and ideals sought the universal cooperation of Negroes everywhere, and in every line of endeavor." 2nd President of Buffalo Division #79, Hon. Arthur L. Lewis

On the 17th of this month UNIA-ACL delegates from Division #433 in Buffalo visited Garveyites from the Toronto Chapter to raise the UNIA-ACL flag at Toronto City Hall. Division Chaplain Dewitt Lee, Emancipation Month Canada and many other local PanAfrican groups came together to organize a beautiful event. The highlight of the event was a visit from Dr. Julius Garvey who was able to participate in this show of universal cooperation on his father’s birthday. A commemorative plaque was unveiled for the former UNIA Hall located on College St. At one time, millions of Black Americans, and Africans throughout the diaspora, had a "thorough understanding" of the "principles and ideals" that accompanied the colors Red, Black and Green. It was once clearly understood when one was seen wearing these colors or waving the UNIA-ACL flag, that this was a Garveyite. This term was not designated for those who simply liked the colors, attended a few meetings, or agreed with a few quotes from our first President General. Very specifically, this term was, and is designated for members in good standing with the UNIA-ACL Government of the World, as established in 1920. When President General Marcus Garvey would come to Buffalo to speak, he would be welcomed by the 500-1000 members of Division #79. The pageantry would include a parade of Garveyites all presenting their colors proudly. Black Cross Nurses in all white, the Motor Corps and African Legion marching in step. The Junior Division would greet him in their colorful uniforms, as he and National Organizer Henrietta Vinton Davis, would march to the stage. What was this "thorough understanding" that these Garveyites had? Researching the origins of the flag and colors show a series of events that culminated in its creation. First, we note the history of Africans as being portrayed as a lower class no matter where we were in the early 1900's. The Arabic and TransAtlantic slave trades had decimated our people world wide, lynchings and Jim Crow was in full effect. There was a multitude of racist literature, music and imagery depicting our people as less than human. One that stands out as key to this discussion was 'Every race has a flag but the coon,' a song written by Heelan and Helf. An ad called it "A musical hit" in a 1901 Chicago Daily Tribune issue. The New York Times in 1902 had an ad calling the song "One of his greatest hits in April." It was at this time that Garvey was traveling through Europe, South and Central America and parts of the West Indies, learning and forming relationships. He recalls in his letter from Tombs prison: "My doom, if I may so call it, of being a race leader dawned upon me... I asked, Where is the Black man's Government? Where is his King and his kingdom? Where is his President, his country, and his ambassador, his army, his navy, his men of big affairs? I could not find them, and then I declared, 'I will help to make them!' " He went on to develop his philosophy and the original structure of the UNIA in Jamaica in 1914. By 1918, he and 13 officers established the UNIA-ACL in New York. During this time of development an event occurred that was too much for the Garveyites who witnessed it's aftermath to ignore. Continued Page 11

With The Name of God Most Gracious Most Merciful

The Straight Path

This is for all women but specifically the Hebrew-Israelite women based on their actions in the scripture. It is important and urgent that you return to who you were. The Straight Path A message of Divine Guidanceis given to us (1:15-21). Yes, you defied the authority of the Pharaoh of Egypt because you feared the Meost High. that courageous action saved thousands of our young men. That same action is needed now. Our men are being slaughtered in the streets of “Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 28:68). Of all of the creations of the Most High, women are of great significance because of their role to humanity. You are the first contact after the Creator that any human being has from conception to birth, then from childhood to adulthood. Your duties are so important that if you are a God fearing person as the Hebrew women were, the lives of many of us would be better. (Surah 66:11-12) Our women - the Hebrew Isralite women, your devotion and attention is needed now more than ever for the upbringing of our youth. Our young pregnant women of today are not aware that any negative thoughts during pregnancy may be transmitted to the unborn baby in their wombs. Because of the society in which we now live, we have been put through many changes. The role which you had is no longer there but it can be retrieved. You can stop the tears you are now shedding for your children. It can be stopped, just return to who you were. It’s that easy. You are of the chosen. (Lectures on The Straight Path meets on the 2nd and last Tuesday of the month now thru October 2019 at the Merriweather Library, Jefferson & Utica. For more information call 716207-1981)

RED, BLACK AND GREEN continued from page 10 As the tale goes, in the summer of 1919 the body of a 17 year old Black girl was found. She had been brutalized, raped and her body dissected. She was thought to have been the servant of a White couple, who were arrested for the crime, but later released. It was at this site that Rabbi Josiah Ford drafted the unofficial 4th verse of the Universal Ethiopian National Anthem: Oh, her RED blood they spill’d on the meadow, Shall always be dear to me; Her BLACK form that laid on the meadow, Cried out, “Africa must be free.” The red and the black tearful given The GREEN grass did tenderly screen, And the rain fell, bright teardrops from heaven, On the Red and the Black and the Green. In 1920 at the infamous UNIA-ACL Convention, via Declaration #39, it was resolved the colors Red, Black and Green be the colors of this Nation. With the unanimous support of over 20,000 delegates, the Flag of our Nation was created. In a 1921 speech, Garvey gave one of the most influential quotes in all of modern Black history. "Show me the race or the nation without a flag, and I will show you a race of people without any pride. Aye! In song and mimicry they have said, 'Every race has a flag but the coon.' How true! Aye! But that was said of us four years ago. They can't say it now...!" So we must be clear about the "thorough understanding" of the "principles and ideals" behind the colors of the UNIA-ACL. We must collectively respect the Garveyite commitment to forming and maintaining "a government, a nation of our own, strong enough to lend protection to the members of our race scattered all over the world, and to compel the respect of the nations and races of the earth." (Garvey 1922)

Legislator Baskin Applauded for Keeping the Pressure on Sheriff Howard Dear Editor: I am writing in regards to the articles submitted by Legislator April Baskin re: The Erie County Holding Center, in which at this time I’ve resided since April. I ask that Legislator Baskin continue to keep the pressure on Sheriff Timothy Howard for all the issues that have been pointed out so far as the living conditions, medical staff and officers’ behavior towards inmates. Not to mention the high commissary prices: i.e., Ramen Noodle soup 95cents, a bar of soap $1.60 and the list goes on. I also ask that Legislator Baskin keep the pressure on Mr. Howard as far as body cameras for inside 40 Delaware as well to record when there is a fight between inmates and with officers and inmates as well. You wouldn’t believe what one goes through without the cameras! May God bless you all. Respectfully, -Philip Purdue

Residents Urged to Partcipate in Community Sponsored Events Dear Editor: I was part of the Delavan-Grider Farmer's Market that set up every second Saturday of the month. A variety of vendors offered various goods. I was promoting recycling in order to educate the public in hopes of increasing participation. As people entered the gate to the center for yoga and other activities, it was discouraging that hardly anyone even looked over to wave or say hello. If the Eastside is to develop economically, support for events like the one at the Delavan-Grider center is fundamental. The same can be said for various forums at the Merriweather Library. A chance to attend and speak at such events helps develop participation and involvement in the growth of our community. Please be a supporter!! It's crucial!! -Joseph Allen

Tanks to Make An Arrest? Dear Editor: The recent arrest of the 24-year-old man wanted in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend was good news. When police went into the apartment where the suspect, Charles Jones was, they also found the body of a woman in the closet who sadly turned out to be his mother! Good that he was apprehended, but did it take a tank (the news called it a SWAT truck), SWAT, police and detectives that filled the 1490 parking lot to arrest one man - who came out peacefully with his hands above his head? This is a senior citizens facility. What if gunfire had broken out? The "standoff" may have led to even more tragic deaths and injuries to the senior residents living there. -T. Jones

You're a FELON!

I

magine hearing these words and you are certain that you have not committed a crime. What is a felony? In criminal law, a felony is a category of crimes that are often classified as the most serious type of offenses. Felonies can be either violent or nonviolent. Some examples are murder, rape, kidnapping, arson, fraud, manslaughter, possession of a controlled substance, and child molestation. You believe this is someone’s mistake. Imagine further that it takes two years for you to clear your name and discover how and why the FBI has your name attached to a felony conviction. This is what happened to an innocent Black man who just happens to be a well-respected educator, historian, author and activist. I just discovered this man’s story and it reminded me of all the outrageous things I have heard and read about the experiences of Black people who encounter Whites who immediately criminalize, ostrasize, marginalize, and dehumanize them based on misinformation, stereotyped views, or a perceived notion based in racist bias. I know many of you are familiar with many such instances, especially over the last four years: driving while Black, laughing or talking too loudly while Black, sleeping while Black, shopping while Black, entering your own apartment while Black, walking too slowly while Black...and the list goes on. Innumerable Black lives have been lost due to some White person’s belief that we just don’t belong. Looking back at our history in this country since 1619, our very presence seems to have been a problem for some White people although they benefitted from our labor, our creativity, and our willingness to be forgiving in spite of the suffering we endured. When I look back at the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, this was a time of tremendous growth in my understanding of self, history, and culture. The mistreatment of Africans in America was and is rampant. It was so during the period of our enslavement and it is true today. It is also true that we have always fought back for justice and liberation. The man I wrote about at the beginning of this article is Dr. Curtis Austin. He wrote a book about the Black Panther Party entitled UP AGAINST THE WALL. His writing led to a criminal record when it was simply written to dispel the misconceptions that so many people had, and still have, about the Black Panther Party. Outrageous but true. Driving while Black has led to the unbelievable deaths of some unfortunate African Americans. Outrageous but true. Standing up for justice has led to the unconscionable assassinations of some Black leaders... Malcolm, Martin, and George. Our next meeting will highlight Dr. Austin’s story and his book and the life and work of George Jackson whom we remember yearly with a commemoration of “Black August” during our August public meeting which will be held on Monday, August 26th at the Rafi Greene C.A.O. Masten Resource Center, 1423 Fillmore Avenue at Glenwood from 7 to 9pm. More information: Karima, karimatells@yahoo.com; BaBa, 716-491-5319. TAO TE CHING

Buffalo Bills News Well what should we talk about first the fact that the Bills won another preseason game or Christian Wade breaking another big gain. This is just the tip of the iceberg as the Buffalo Bills went to North Carolina and spanked the Carolina Panthers 27-14. The Josh Allen to Cole Beasley connection look pretty good again this week has Josh Allen completed nine of 11 passes for 102 yards. Cole Beasley caught five passes for 41 yards and Matt Barkley is looking really good with the second team as he completed 10 of 11 passes and a nice TD pass to Duke Williams. Christian "Big Gain" Wade for the second straight preseason game impressed as he almost took a screen pass to the house. The defense also look pretty well as Kevin Johnson had a pick-six. Ed Oliver looks like a sure lock in for Week One starter. The run defense could be a little better though and the Bills will need to cut down on those penalties. EJ Gaines has also been released from the bills so it will be important for the other cornerbacks to step up for that nickel or dime position. This Friday, The bills will face the Detroit Lions. What will we see from the Buffalo Bills this week? I look for the bills offense to be more fluent. The bills run defense needs to tighten up. The Special Teams will need to be better and The Bills will definitely need to cut down on the penalties. Will Tyree Jackson and Zay Jones step up this week? Who will stand out on defense against the Lions?

Buffalo Bisons Baseball Can You Feel The Herd coming as they are one game out of first place in their division? Andy Burns & the Bisons are making a serious run to the MILB Playoffs. This accomplishment would definitely be very exciting for the 716 community as the Bisons look to break the playoff drought that has lasted since 2005. Will the Bisons be in first place by the weeks end? The Bisons will face the Rochester Red Wings for the next 4 games.

In Other Sports News The LA Lakers lost DeMarcus Cousins to an ACL injury that will keep him out for the 2019-2020 NBA season. Jay-Z and the NFL have come to a contractual agreement. This move could bring the Roc Nation CEO one-step closer to owning an NFL team. There has been some backlash ask Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid are not too thrilled with this new partnership. The Buffalo Sabres will be getting ready for preseason action very soon as this young core of players have added major talent to their roster. Will the Sabres start out the season again the way they did last season? Will the re-signing of Jeff Skinner payoff this season? What new Sabres acquisition will show up and show out this season?
