Racism at Pittsford Schools Incidents of racism in Pittsford schools have reportedly been occurring with increasing frequency since the 2016 presidential election, according to both parents and the school district. But parents recently charged the district's response has been to cover-up, the problems despite a committee that is supposedly leading the way on the problem. Last month dozens of parents protested what they called a tepid treatment of the issue by Superintendent Mike Pero. The Pittsford Central School District has 3 percent Black students, a large portion of whom attend through the Urban-Suburban program. That is one of the lowest proportions in Monroe County. The problems at Pittsford don't seem to be unique. A recent Democrat and Chronicle investigation found that in every single Rochester-area district, Black students are more likely to be suspended and less likely to take Advanced Placement classes.

uffalo State College President Katherine Conway-Turner has announced that actor and former Buffalonian Jesse L. Martin will speak at the college's 147th commencement on Saturday, May 18. Martin will address graduates at both baccalaureate ceremonies (9 a.m. and 1p.m.) and the graduate ceremony (5p.m.). He will be presented with a SUNY honorary doctor of fine arts degree during the 9 a.m. ceremony. Martin, who grew up in Buffalo, is best known for originating the role of Tom Collins in the Broadway musical RENT, his television role as Detective Ed Green on Law & Order, and most recently for his work as Detective Joe West on the CW comic-hero series the Flash. Before attending and graduating from the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (where he was voted "Most Talented" in his Jesse L. Martin senior class), Martin attended elementary school on Buffalo State's campus at the Campus School/College Learning Laboratory. "Buffalo State is thrilled to honor and welcome Jesse L. Martin as our 2019 commencement speaker," Conway-Turner said. Martin, in accepting the role of commencement speaker, said in a message to President Conway-Turner, "I formally and humbly accept the honor of giving the 2019 commencement speech at Buffalo State College. I also, very proudly, accept the honorary doctorate that your amazing institution has offered to bestow upon me... As a child of the Buffalo Public School system, who attended elementary school on your beautiful campus, this is a dream come true."
Imagine LaSalle Holds Information Session: Come Out and Learn More About the New Vision and Design for LaSalle Park!
E
very August thousands converge on LaSalle Park for the annual Rick James Memorial Funk Fest; one of many festivals and gatherings held at the popular park along the Buffalo Waterfront; a spot that's also a favorite among residents of the westside community. Newsflash. In case you didn’t know LaSalle Park will soon be transformed into the future Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park. The Imagine LaSalle Initiative invites the community to a public information session held at the Northland Workforce Training Center on Monday, May 20th at 5:30 p.m., hosted by community focus group member Marnetta Malcolm for input and to learn more about he new vision and design. "The design I have seen…is a really good design," said Malcolm. "More than anything, I really appreciate that they are really listening to the community." This information session kicks off the last leg of the design vision model’s three-week city tour with stops at Buffalo Central Library, Canalside, LaSalle Park (May 16-19) and Northland Workforce Training Center (May 20-24). Members of the community will have an opportunity to learn more about the community vision process that began last summer and continues as the design is refined, as well as hear from the design team about details of the initial design vision. Participants will also be able to view and comment on the 16-foot by 6-foot model of the design vision for the park. Marnetta Malcolm Imagine LaSalle has followed a community-driven visioning process incorporating nearly 2,000. It has been guided by 22 carefully chosen community ambassadors, made up mostly of West Side residents and several of whom represent African American cultural and community institutions and organizations from across Buffalo, such as Marnetta Malcolm from the NICYO Rick James Memorial Funk Festival, Tuona Batchelor from Buffalo Quarters Historical Society, and Jamil Crews of the Buffalo Urban League Young Professionals. They travelled to such cities as Chicago, Cincinnati and New York to draw inspiration and ideas, yet still create something that genuinely represents Buffalo. Their findings were detailed in last October’s Community Vision Report, released after the RCWJRF announced a $100 million commitment to support Western New York’s Parks & Trails, including $50 million The Great Lawn in Spring to transform LaSalle Park into the future Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park. The team anticipates a potential groundbreaking in Spring 2022, with an estimated completion date of Spring 2024.

For The First Time in History, Black Women Were Crowned Miss Teen USA, Miss USA & Miss America at all Three Major Pageants
F
or the first time in history, all three winners of the Miss Teen USA, Miss America and Miss USA are AfricanAmerican women. First, Nia Franklin was crowned as Miss America 2019 back in September 2018. The 23-year-old from New York not only won the crown, but took home a whopping $50,000 college scholarship to continue her education. Franklin plans on bringing her “passion for music and performance to advocate for the inclusion of arts as an important part of education. For the talent portion of the competition, Nia chose a classical vocal performance.” Franklin is also a graduate of The University of North Carolina School of Arts where she majored in music composition. Earlier this week, 18-year-old Connecticut native Kaleigh Garris was crowned Miss Teen USA, the second woman since 1999 to win rocking her natural hair. Garris recently told Refinery 29 there were some haters that tried to pressure her to straighten her tresses during the televised competition. But she relented and stayed true to herself. “The night before, I finger curled every single piece of my hair in the shower, which led to a very long shower, but it was for the greater good,” Garris told the site. “I know what I look like with straight hair, with extensions, and with my curly hair, and I feel more confident and comfortable with my natural hair.” Garris stressed that by choosing to be her natural self, she is setting an example for others and validating women who look like her. “As Miss Connecticut Teen USA, there are girls who would look at me in awe because they’ve always had the image of straight hair in pageants,” she said. “Being able to spread the message of diversity, being yourself, and being confident in your curly, natural hair is something that I’m really looking forward to with my new national title.” And finally on Thursday (May 3), Cheslie Kryst from North Carolina was crowned Miss USA. The 27-year-old lawyer earned a law degree and an MBA at Wake Forest University before becoming a civil litigation attorney who does pro bono work to reduce sentences for inmates. During the competition, Kyrst was asked how she would define her generation. Her response centered on diversity and progress. “I’m standing here in Nevada, in the state that has the first female majority legislature in the entire country,” she said at the event held for the first time in Reno. “Mine is the first generation to have that forward-looking mindset that has inclusivity, diversity, strength and empowered women. I’m looking forward to continued progress in my generation.”
More than 1,000 people have died from Ebola in Eastern Congo since August, the country’s Health administrator reported last week. It is the second-worse outbreak of the disease in history behind the West African one in 2014-16 that killed more than11,300.
Who Killed Atlanta’s Children?
Forty years ago, Atlanta was terrorized by a serial killer who snatched and killed 24 African American boys aged 7 to 17. In 1982 Wayne Williams was convicted of killing two adults. Police suspected that he was also responsible for most of the child murders, as well as killings of four young adults. Even though prosecutors introduced evidence to potentially link him to some of the other murders, Mr. Williams who is now 60 years old, is serving two life sentences, was never tried or convicted of killing any of the children. No one was. But after Mr. Williams was sent to prison, 22 of the unsolved child murder cases were closed, raising an enduring question: Who killed Atlanta’s children? Last month it was announced that investigators would take a fresh look at the murders, and the city would begin exploring plans for a memorial to the children.

FAITH With The Name of God Most Gracious Most Merciful
The Straight Path
P
-A Message of Divine Guidance-
eace be onto you. There are so many controversies surrounding the word halal. The meaning of the word is “lawful”, but it has been misrepresented, especially when pertaining to meat. All animals that are deemed lawful by the creator are “halal” before slaughter. The idea that you have to kill the animal in order for it to be lawful is wrong. That idea is used for a commercial purpose. Of course if you don’t allow the blood to drain there is an issue because the consuming of blood is unlawful or “haram” (forbidden). See (Exodus 22:31), (Leviticus 17:10-16,22:8), (Deuteronomy 14:21), (Surah 5:3-4), and (Surah 6:145-146). All of these misconceptions stem from Hadiths - a word which has several meanings but the one that we are dealing with is (sayings). (Surah 31:6) is a clear example of what is being discussed. The word Hadith is there in Arabic but another word is used in english translation. What makes it worse is that when it appears in its Arabic form in the Quran, the meaning varies. Take for instance (Surah 39:23). Here the Creator is saying that he revealed the best Hadith. The translation in this case being (announcement) which is correct as translated, but when the controversial version of Hadith is mentioned, the word is not translated. Let us see if it was possible for the Prophet to utter such falsehood. In (Surah 50:45), the Prophet is clearly told to remind by the Quran and in (Surah 7:3) to follow what has been revealed. (Surah 45:6). Which of the Hadiths will you then follow? In (Surah 69:43-49) we see that if the Prophet had said otherwise, we most likely would not have known him. In (Surah 6:15) and (Surah 10:15) the Messenger of The Most High said those words. We must not forget what the devil said. (Surah 7:16-18). In (Surah 52:34), these same people are asked to bring a Hadith like the Quran. This is an issue that has been around for a long time. (Deuteronomy 4:2). Within the Injeel, Jesus (Isa), son of Mary said (Matthews 15:1-9). How are we going to deal with that ? (Surah 68:44) is how. Leave them to God himself. Failure to follow the command of the most High has its consequences.
"The Case for More Incarceration”
In his first stint as attorney general under George H.W. Bush, and long before his distortions of the Mueller Report, Attorney General William Barr (now in his second appointment under President Trump) in 1992 issued a damaging report called “The Case for More Incarceration.” He was one of many politicians and office-holders, Democrats and Republicans, who led the United States, with 5 percent of the world’s population to hold almost 25 percent of the world’s prisoners…
Killer Breast Implants A type of breast implant linked to a rare cancer can still be sold in the United States, even though it has been banned in many other countries, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said last week. A vast majority of the cancer cases have occurred in women with textured implants, mainly those made with Allergan.

In Part 1 of the Water is Life series, we discussed how important water was for both our physical and mental health. We learned what happens to the body when it is deprived of its most important nutrient; water. In this article we will discuss how much water each of us should drink daily, how one should drink water and what type of water is best How much Water should I drink daily? Take your body weight, divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink daily. For example, someone who is 200lbs should drink a minimum of 100 ounces of water daily. That equals about 6, 16.9oz bottles of water. If you are exercising, you will need to consume more water. It is very important that you follow these guidelines to prevent dehydration and maximize the benefits of water. How Should You Drink Water? Always drink water upon waking up as the body has not had water all night. Drink water before your meals to help with digestion and before exercising to help with oxygen flow. Other than that, drink water however it suits you throughout the day to reach your daily consumption goal. By the time you feel thirsty, or have a dry mouth you are already dehydrated, so it is important to drink throughout the day. One important thing to note is that the body does not store water the same way it stores fat. There is not a reserve of water in the body. That is why it is important to drink water consistently throughout the day, every day. The chart at the end of this column is a great tool to use to determine if you have had enough water. Other beverages? Your body has no need for milk, juice, soda/pop, or any other beverage that is marketed to you as a substitute for water. These beverages should be eliminated from the diet as much as possible. Water should ALWAYS be your beverage of choice. No other beverage will produce the healing benefits of water, and every time you drink something other than water, you are one step closer to becoming dehydrated. This is especially important for our children. They are at risk of dehydration just as adults are. Their drink of choice should be water as well. Spring Water, Distilled, or Alkaline? There are some people who promote drinking spring water rather than distilled water and some who promote drinking only alkaline water. I drink all three and I don’t have a preference. I try not to get caught up in debates like this. But I do have one suggestion, do not drink tap water! Tap Water Water is our most precious resource and we must always be concerned and vigilant about the substances in our water. There are many harmful chemicals in our tap water, but I would like to highlight one; sodium fluoride. We’ve been told that water fluoridation is safe, natural and prevents tooth decay. But this is false. Fluoride is not a nutrient. Dr. Bernard Jensen, author or Empty Harvest explains the following: Excessive doses can be very toxic, and by excessive we are speaking of minute doses to start with. Toxic levels have been shown at merely one part per million (ppm)…you can fill a library with the literature from around the world about the negative effects of sodium fluoride. It has been cited as one of the most potentially toxic factors to the thyroid and endocrine system…Although it was once legal, fluoridation is now banned throughout most of Europe and Japan. The evidence stating that fluoride reduces tooth decay is weak. Fluoride is a neurotoxin. It impairs cognitive and memory function (causes brain drain). It calcifies the pineal gland and prevents the secretion of melanin. There have been 37 human studies linking fluoride exposure to reduced intelligence. Fluoride bio-accumulates in the body and can also cause arthritis-like symptoms. Can fluoride be removed from tap water? I remember my grandmother boiling tap water as a child. This does not remove fluoride. Activated carbon filters like Brita and Pur do not remove fluoride either. Only water filters that use reverse osmosis and deionized and active alumna can remove fluoride. A water distillation system will remove most if not all the fluoride from water as well. It seems somewhat counterintuitive to not drink tap water, but if you’re still not convinced, I have one more thing to add; Flint, Michigan. Always keep in mind that water is life. It is the most needed nutrient by the body and the body suffers immensely when dehydrated. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily. Drink spring distilled or alkaline water and avoid tap water when possible. Optimal health begins with water, health cannot exist without adequate water consumption. Ramadan Mubarak! Blessed Ramadan!
The Blessed month of Ramadan began on the evening of May 5th this year and will last for a period of 29- or 30-days, (depending on the sighting of the new moon). Ramadan is a month of fasting for over 1 billion Muslims worldwide. It is also one of the five pillars of faith that is required for all Muslims. The five basic pillars of faith are: #1 Belief in the One G-d Allah (Allah is the name of The Supreme Being that is also called by Yahweh, Jehovah, Elohim etc.) #2 Offer the 5 daily prayers (before sunrise, mid-day, mid-afternoon, at dusk and before retiring at night). #3 Give in Charity (tax 2.5% of your accumulated wealth after your reasonable expenses). #4 Fast the month of Ramadan (for those who are of age of puberty, not ill or not travelling away from home) Fajri #5 Make the pilgrimage to Mecca. (at least once in a life time for those who can afford to do so) ANSARI Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset abstaining from any food, drink or intimate relationships with their spouse. Muslims are also to be on their best behavior refraining from arguments, foul language, intoxicants, all negative behaviors that can essentially break your fast beyond partaking in food or drink. Women who are pregnant are not to fast as well as people with long term medical conditions. Provisions are made were one can make up the fast days later or if unable to fast they can feed a poor person(s) for each day that they miss. Fasting is for Allah (G-d) who is the only One who truly knows if you are honoring your fast! Prophet Muhammad said, “Allah says: Fasting is for Me and I shall reward you for it.” The word Ramadan means “burning” as to burn off impurities and sins. It also means to grow. The fast is designed to burn off all the impurities that have stained the soul and character of a person over the previous year. Prophet Muhammad also stated that “Whoever intends and successfully completes the fast of Ramadan, will have all their sins of the previous year forgiven by Allah.” Ramadan is a time for yourself to spend with your Lord. To reflect, relax and rejuvenate your spirit to worship and serve. Ramadan is also a time to be mindful of the hurt of those who do not have homes and or the wherewithal to provide for themselves or Continued Page 12

P.E.A.C.E. Mother’s Day Jazz Concert
Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo Volunteer Spotlight: Patrick Cray, Parade Chair Submitted by Jennifer Strickland, Public Relations Chair
The Juneteenth Festival’s parade, probably the largest and longest cultural procession in the U.S., travels just over a mile from Genesee and Moselle Sts. to Martin Luther King Park, where vendors, concessioners, entertainment stages, and more await festival-goers for one of the greatest salutes to the African and African American experience. The man behind this massive parade production is Buffalo’s own Patrick Cray. Presently a semiretired,Buffalo Police Officer, he’s in his third season as the chairman of the Festival’s parade committee. His experience with Buffalo’s festival began nearly 30 years ago when he was hired to play music for the youth on the basketball court. Community Artists Featured Among the Over 60 Works On View at the Burchfield Penney Arts Center
C
ontemporary Portraiture at Burchfield Penney Arts Center is the current and most conversational group show I’ve seen thus far in 2019. The show features over 60 works by 14 fearless creators on all levels. From emerging, to mid-level and established, these artists are proving Buffalo’s area talent knows how to take the box and open it up to make room for a fresh new expanded vision of traditional and non-traditional expressions in portraiture. When you stroll through the East Gallery you are swept into the unique creative environment for a wonderfully alternative visual art experience and it's definitely not stuck in a rut with countless static heads glaring at you from the canvas. A contemporary potluck of expression and exploration, each artist has taken their creative license to exhibit how they see new meaning in portraiture and with a mix of media throughout there is something for everyone to indulge and enjoy in this exhibition. Among the 14 local creators selected by chief curator Scott Propeack for the exhibit, the unmatchable talent of three community artists who never fail to deliver are in the mix and will likely stay top of mind long after seeing this show. The traditions in oil portrait precision remixed by the hand of artist Julia Bottoms redefines the raw indelible beauty of the Black contemporary image. John Baker shows his uniquely bold contrasts that are both literal and historical through portraits of Negro League Baseball legends, and the unstoppable rhythmic free hand of Edreys Wajed draws you into a larger than life homage to Richard Pryor surrounded by hip-hop icons hidden in a veil of musical notes that may have you naming your top five before you leave the gallery; not to mention honorary community artist Chuck Tingley and his colorfully mountainous storytelling assemblage of fabrics that scale the south east wall. The show is a true helping of savory, bitter and sweet home grown pride filled with a variety of identities, cultures, memories, realities dreams and a representation of undeniable local talent everyone should get more acquainted with. Stop by Burchfield Penney Arts Center East Gallery to see this fantastic show now through June 2nd, 1300 Elmwood Ave (Buffalo State College campus entrance) Tuesday & Wednesday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. 4 p.m. Get more info online at www.burchfieldpenney.org - L.H.

Remembering Emma Louise Callahan
ow do you begin to summarize a woman who lived an entire century and touched so many thousands of lives in the City of Buffalo and beyond? We can barely manage to study in school what Emma L. Callahan lived with vigor each and every single day for 99 years of earthly service. The Great Depression, World Wars, The Civil Rights Movement, Women's Liberation. She rode in the first automobiles, watched the first TV, admired the Queen of England, saw a man walk on the moon, voted for the first Black President. We taught her about cell phones, Twitter, Skype and text messaging. She never danced, smoked, drank, cussed, or went to the movies - but she enjoyed sitting in her recliner clapping and singing along to popular songs written by some of entertainment's most legendary music artists. The story of Emily Louise Bolar began at 4:28 a.m. on September 3, 1919 near Mobile Alabama. She was raised on a farm as the daughter of a sharecropper. Teachers and neighbors started calling her Emma during an era when it was neither safe nor polite to question authority. But she held dear to her heart the name given by her dear father, "Emily." Working in those plantation fields sparked Emma to have a work ethic like no other. One of the youngest girls of 13 sisters and brothers, Poppa once told Emma she was too young to be useful. She begged him to give her a chance. On her first day out, she picked the same amount of cotton as her Mama - 98 pounds - she earned her first 98 cents! Emma was one of the top students in her graduating class. She was accepted to the prestigious Tuskegee University but her family was too poor to send her to college - even with tuition costing a modest $200. In 1945, at the age of 25, Emma braved one of the

first commercial passenger trains from the South - destined for Buffalo New York to find work. When she arrived friends and a welcoming church family embraced her where she was introduced to William Vincent Callahan, Sr. The two met at the beginning of July 1945 and they married at the end of July 1945. When asked how she met and married the love of her life in less than 30 days - Emma would say "God put that together honey. That was nothing but God!" William Sr. and Emma (he called her Jip) spent the next 39 years of their holy matrimony building community throughout the city, starting with their church, Trinity Baptist Church. Deacon and Deaconess Callahan loved Trinity very much and very actively helped their Pastors grow the congregation. William Sr. and Emma saved up enough money to buy their first home in 1952, the same year their only child William Vincent Callahan, Jr. was born. Buffalo was very racially segregated, and the Callahan's were the first and for many years, the only Black family to live in the Downtown Buffalo neighborhood. Emma fought the housing association to prove that her family could be good homeowners, she won. Emma eventually obtained her real estate license. Her husband taught her how to drive a car to support her new career. Over the next 40+ years, The Callahan's would go on to purchase several properties - providing affordable housing to countless families on her street. Known for her green thumb, the Callahan's famously hosted wedding & baby showers, political rallies, birthday, engagement, graduation soirees; garden parties to honor elite government officials from local to national. When Junior was old enough to walk home from his nearby grade school, Emma become a hairdresser so that she could open a beauty shop in the basement of her home and she became a stayat-home Mom and entrepreneur. Emma was known to have one of the best "shampoo-press-and-curl" shops around. Emma didn't retire as a beautician until she was 93 years old, and even then still had loyal clients she had to turn away! Continued Page 11

The Truth of The CAO...
O
ne day… some years ago now… I arrived at a community function frazzled and annoyed. The program had yet to begin, so I joined a circle of friends to vent my lingering road rage. Why, why, why were drivers required to stop in every direction for school buses at all times, especially when some students were teens, and others were smaller, but weren’t crossing the street? L. Nathan Hare, CEO of the Community Action Organization walked over to boast that it was he who had personally lobbied for that traffic law to be enacted in New York State. He explained that children were unpredictable, likely to dart out into traffic at any time. Requiring all cars to stop for school buses was the best way to prevent more tragic deaths of children. “I want our kids to be safe,” he said. I noted that he hadn’t said: “the kids.” “He SABIRAH said: “our kids.” He took ownership of them – MUHAMMAD and personal responsibility for their lives. This is the incident that comes to mind as the Buffalo News continues it’s hit job on the CAO, digging deeper and reaching back further to find more and more “nothing” to sen-
EMMA CALLAHAN continued from page 10 By 1977, the Callahan family grew again when Junior conceived his baby girl. He named her Crystal Renee. They called her "Crys" and she was the only offspring of Sonny and Jip's golden child. Emma was the recipient of numerous awards for her work with the NAACP, United Way, Johnson Street Block Club, Baptist Training Union, Buffalo Common Council, The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc, and The American Legion, just to name a few. In 2009, Buffalo entered "Emma L. Callahan Day" into the registry at City Hall. Though she never stopped asking for her comfort farm meals like black-eyed peas and lima beans, ham hocks and rice, she had made a name for herself a long way from the cotton fields of Alabama. All powerful journeys have tons of sorrow to add to the sweet. Emma outlived her parents and all of her siblings. Then when William Sr. passed away in 1984 and William Jr. passed away in 1992 - a heartbroken Emma kept going the only ways she knew how: by leaning on faith and continuing to adopt friends as family. You won't find a person who loved God, family, friends, Trinity, Buffalo, community service, Civic Virtue, life, flowers, houses, food, the Buffalo Evening News, the Criterion newspaper, the Challenger newspaper, Channel 4 News, or Steve Harvey's Family Feud more than Emma! Emma would sit on her front porch keeping order on her block of the street and reaping the fruits of all the seeds of generosity she had planted. She will be dearly missed by her granddaughter Crystal Renee Callahan, and an extraordinary host of best friends, neighbors, and more. Fighting for life even up until taking her last breath - God summoned Emma to rest with Him and Sonny and Junior in heaven around 4:28 am on April 2, 2019. Crys told Emma how much we all loved her just before she went to sleep the night before. Now, she can still live for hundreds more years as we all promise to carry the legacy of Emma "Emily" Louise Bolar Callahan in each and every one of our hearts.

sationalize and demonize in its relentless propaganda campaign on behalf of … somebody. When a three year-old child wandered outside a Niagara Falls Head Start facility with friends and their parents, the CAO responded aggressively with staff training, door alarms, new security protocols and video surveillance that increased security at all of its sites, not just that one. The organization paid a fine and fired the two teachers responsible during the incident. State regulators were satisfied with the response, and cleared the re-opening of the site. The meticulous attention to the seriousness of this incident doesn’t surprise me, knowing what I do about the heart of Nate Hare for our children. Reframing this incident as one of salacious neglect is utterly profane. The story is the same for all the issues raised in this smear campaign, which, despite efforts to the contrary, has exposed a picture of a large organization encountering occasional missteps that have been handled effectively and professionally when discovered. Head Start teachers without required credentials were provided tutoring and classes through partnerships with Buff State and ECC, and Federal reviewers have confirmed they’re satisfied. They’re satisfied with the CAO’s handling of record keeping issues that surfaced in 2010. Yes. 2010. Federal officials were also satisfied with safeguards implemented to address bookkeeping issues from yesteryear. Even current hyperbolic ranting has been disproven. Auditors contacted by disgruntled former CAO board members to conduct a forensic audit have confirmed what L. Nathan Hare has said repeatedly: that they never started an audit. There was no effort to fire troublesome board members to stop an audit that didn’t exist. It was those board members’ own accusations that sparked the CAO’s self-examination, which uncovered the fact that six – not just these four members were improperly seated. Board members who weren’t in favor of Mr. Hare’s dismissal as CEO were released in order to comply with CAO by-laws. Moreover, an unlawful firing could be taken up in a court of law – but it isn’t, is it? That’s because it wasn’t unlawful. The Buffalo News has no credibility in this politically motivated persecution. In its March 26th editorial: “Byron Brown has a Problem,” the paper just comes on outta the bag and exposes the plot to sully the Mayor by criminalizing the CAO, and presenting the two as peas in a pod. The writers attach the CAO to the complaint of a developer who’s ticked with Mayor Brown over a hiring issue. The problem? Brown has also prevailed in court – twice – leaving the paper in the same position as with the CAO: attempting to drown the two in a deluge of sinister propaganda which it hopes to sanctify with time and repetition. It seems the stress of this diabolical campaign is taking its toll. Both language and tactics are devolving in the prolonged effort to prop up such a colossal crusade with so little. The simple act of using security guards at board meetings is now described as an “implied threat of violence,” and using “firearms to keep the public at bay.” The writers stoop to name-calling and insulting innocent Head Start children with the line: “…our Head Start program needs to be in the top 10 percent, not a bottom feeder.” Of course, fear and trepidation may be settling in as the FBI, Attorney General, congress and other agencies who’ve been whipped up to pile on – turn their attention to those doing the whipping, who know better than anyone that there’s nothing here. State and Federal regulators throughout this operation have confirmed repeatedly… that there’s nothing here. Former board member Jennifer Shank’s latest “concern,” that “grant money devoted to Head Start and Early Head Start was being diverted to other CAO “ needs has been refuted by the department of Health and Human Services. HHS has completed its review of both fiscal and program operations, and notified the CAO on February 6th that there are no unresolved findings; no corrections needed. The closed board meetings that these folks keep whining about are not required to be open. And why should they open the door to a damn wolf? What self-respecting organization wouldn’t take steps to ensure the orderly conduction of its meetings? By now it’s crystal clear that disparate fragments of rumor, innuendo, conspiracy and outright lies are no match for the rock-solid competence and integrity that is the Community Action Organization under the leadership of L. Nathan Hare.

By Bradley J. Bethel Jr.,
he Route 33 and 198 Expressways in Buffalo have recently been designated by Congress for New Urbanism’s nationwide annual survey of Freeways Without Futures. Other expressways included were Interstate 980 from Oakland CA, Interstate 81 from Syracuse NY, and Interstate 70 of Denver CO. Cities across America have awakened to the racial hypocrisy behind urban expressways. They specifically target low-income neighborhoods, emerging from segregationist housing practices of the 1930’s. Today, Black neighborhoods inherited from former German, Polish, and Italian enclaves continue footing the bill for the original “White flight” to the suburbs from the 1950’s. With Route 33’s walls deteriorating, and Route 198’s impediment upon visitors of Delaware Park, both expressways are obsolete structures highlighting the importance of the Congress for New Urbanism’s survey. The survey continues the conversation around Buffalo about a concurrent discrepancy between the revival of Humboldt Parkway, the reconfiguration of Scajaquada, and the future of Routes 33 and 198. It begs the question, “how do we get around the city with altered expressways?” The bitter reality behind this question is that it easily ignores how the main city streets bring drivers to and from the same destinations throughout the city. The question evokes the political and cultural cannibalism that orchestrated the city’s decline, and now threatens the city’s renaissance. Much like the expressways themselves, the question ultimately manipulates the city against itself. Buffalonians expressed pride in Humboldt Parkway, and mourned its loss. The former boulevard, and its proposed revival promote the importance of neighborhood ownership. Ownership establishes identity. If we as neighbors fail to take ownership of our neighborhoods, the identity of the Fruit Belt, Hamlin Park, Parkside, and Black Rock will continue to be compromised by special interests from Amherst, Cheektowaga, and Hamburg. Once we re-establish our identity, the question then should be, “how can we improve city neighborhoods directly impacted by Routes 33 and 198?” Visit our webpage at: http://www.roccbuffalo.org ( Bradley J. Bethel Jr. is the ROCC Research Associate)
Nate Hare and the CAO: Innocent Until Proven Guilty Dear Editor: For the last 7 months I have been watching the Buffalo News wage a smear campaign against L. Nathan Hare and the CAO using (former) unwitting moles on the CAO board. It seems now the media has clandestinely made contact with the FBI, the masters of smear tactics. The various headlines ring with the suggestive power of “guilty until proven innocent” as Hare’s accusers continue to try to find something to hang their hat on and to take down as many others as possible, - if at all possible along with him. The FBI has a long history of employing smear tactics against people of African descent. Do you remember Marcus Garvey, W.E.B.Dubois, Paul Robeson, Richard Wright, Martin King, Malcolm X, Adam Powell, Stokely Carmichael, Rap Brown, Angela Davis, Fred Hampton, Huey Newton? And the Beat goes on…

Leroy Coles Jr. Branch Library Dedication
On April 26, the Leroy R. Coles Jr. Branch Library Dedication was held at the building's Bailey/Delavan location. The turnout was tremendous! Our hats are off to Sandi Williams, a military veteran who came up with the idea that there should be a building in Buffalo named to acknowledge the contribution of the late Leroy Coles, a renowned civil rights activist and a past president of the Buffalo Urban League. Her hard work, dedication and vision should be commended! Pictured (top photo) the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Children's Academy performed. In photo above, Neil Leroy Coles, the son of the late Leroy Coles, delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of the family. Other speakers included Mayor Brown, County Executive Poloncarz, Urban League President Brenda W. McDuffie, Alpha Brother James R. Heck III and Rev. George F. Nicholas. This community owes a world of thanks to Ms. Williams and her vision in honororing a Buffalo legend. Photos By Richard E. Clark
RAMADAN continued from page 7
or family. This is the natural pattern of human life “to want for your brothers and sisters what you want for yourself.” Blessings for doing good deeds during the month of Ramadan are rewarded 70-700 times more than any other time throughout the year. Restraining from food, water and undesirable behavior, makes a person more mentally disciplined and less prone to unhealthy behavior. When it is time to eat prior to sunrise or at sunset, there is no need to over eat. In fact, one should eat a meal comparable to what a poor person would eat, to stay mindful of the needy. The body has a regulatory mechanism that adjusts your hunger appetites to the time(s) of day that you consistently eat. Although a person is eating and drinking less, the body metabolism slows down during Ramadan and balances the food intake to make it sufficient enough for a person to stay healthy. The Qur’an states “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those who came before you that you may learn self-restraint (devotion to G-d).” To strengthen their intellect and knowledge of scripture, Muslims also read a portion of the Qur’an each day of the fast to complete all 114 chapters by the end of the month. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate by having congregational prayer followed by a feast of three days celebration called Eid al Fitr, which means reoccurring happiness. It is a very joyous time as Muslims look forward to sharing food and gifts with family friends and the community at large. Masjid Nu’Man annually prepares a meal to share with the community on the Eid Day in front of the Masjid located at 1373 Fillmore Ave, Buffalo, NY 14211. May you all have a Blessed month of Ramadan and bountiful rewards from Allah (G-d), The Merciful Benefactor, The Merciful Redeemer!
