Protest At Brockport Over Firing Of Diversity Officer Students and staff at the College at Brockport rallied several days ago in support of Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Cephas Archie, calling his firing unjust. The Popular and respected administrator, was well known for helping students and making campus life a fair and equitable experience. Since his appointment in August Dr. Archie 2017, he led campus efforts on inclusion both within the institution and as an educational priority. He became a powerful voice for equity in the region, particularly when it came to schools and hiring. Mayor Lovely Warren blasted the firing of Dr. Archie, calling it “disturbing news.” “It is my understanding that Dr. Archie was fighting against institutional and structural bias and that he has been dismissed.” She stated on-line. “ It’s unfortunate when the people that work toward diversity and inclusion across the collegiate spectrum also face it themselves.” East High School superintendent and Brockport alumn Dr. Shaun Nelms also expressed their support for Dr. Archie. Brockport President Heidi MacPherson called a town hall meeting on Monday to discuss the issue. Hundreds attended including Mayor Warren. Prior to the meeting on Monday afternoon , President MacPherson named Dr. Lorraine Acker Interim Chief Diversity Officer. Also on Monday Dr. Archie released a statement thanking his supporters for the “overwhelming, heartfelt support” shown in the wake of his dismissal. “We must remain committed to challenging systems, structures, decisions and processes that exclusively represent and benefit some, choosing to retire our silence in such matters which impact us all. As a community, region, state, and nation, we must change - NOW!,” he stated in part. “I am grateful for all those who have stood and continue to stand and ask for change, both in and outside of The College. As much of this is about me, it is truly about so much more with many clearly recognizing that if it was "me" today, tomorrow it could be you. We must remember that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to face it head on, and push forward regardless.” The college has given no reason for his dismissal to date.

AREA BRIEFS Forum Will Address Disproportionate Suspensions of Black and Hispanic Students Parent leaders in coordination with the NY Education Trust Fellows are hosting a “To Suspend or Not to Suspend” (part 2) forum on Jan 30 at 5:30pm at 683 Northland Ave. to continue to build momentum to replace out of school suspensions in BPS. “We are asking that the “Section VI Coalition” which came together to protect student athletes from Duncan Kirkwood having opportunities stripped from them, join our growing coalition of parents and leaders looking to protect students from being fed into the school to prison pipeline,” stated community activist Duncan Kirkwood. “Whereas almost every school district in the state of NY was able to reduce their number of suspensions last year, Buffalo was the only district to increase its numbers. According to Buffalo Public School’s website BPS schools suspended over 2,200 students from Sept 2019 – Nov 2019. Of those students about 1,900 were Black and Hispanic. Parents leaders and faith leaders in Buffalo have been fighting on this issue for years.

No Honor for Dr. King Up South Dr. Martin Luther King Day is a national federal holiday. But not every municipality in Western New York honors the great Nobel Peace Prize Civil Rights leaders. The cities of North Tonawanda and Lockport, the villages of Kenmore and Blasdell and the Town of Tonawanda, did not close their offices on January 20 in observance of King’s birthday. We wonder how many other federal holidays they refuse to honor…

MLK Rededication Ceremony Launches Full Court Press to Preserve Monument

“The Making of a Monument” Permanent Exhibit Launched. Plans for Continuing Use of MLK Park Outlined

Brandon Hall, in Mississippi where Wood toiled as an enslaved African in the 1850s, as it looked in 1936.

T

he recent rededication of the Dr. Martin Luther King monument was, in Clifford Bell’s own words “awesome.” Indeed. It was a full court press by a committee led by the 90-year-old civic powerhouse to put an end, once and for all, to the controversy surrounding the monument in MLK Park and efforts to destroy the art and replace it with a more realistic likeness of Dr. King . The truth, Bell and other supporters have said repeatedly, is that the 8 foot bust, created by the eminent Boston sculptor John Wilson, never intended to look exactly like the great civil rights leader; rather it is a symbolic work of art that would capture “the inner spirit and energy of the man.” Wilson’s forceful presentation before the 9-member selection committee over three decades ago , Mr. Bell told the Challenger, “is what made it a go.” The Buffalo African American Museum Committee, which Bell currently chairs, created the community coalition to re-dedicate the monument and promote the artistic value of the tribute to Dr. King. The event, which took place inside Calvary Baptist Church on Genesee Street, and then afterwards briefly at the monument site a short distance away in the park, was complete with historic video of the monument’s dedication in 1983 as well as interviews with original committee members and the artist himself. “Everybody that had a direct involvement in it in 1983 including John Wilson was featured,” Bell told The Challenger. In addition to the program at the church and the rededication of the monument, the grand opening of a permanent “Making of a Monument” exhibit inside the shelter house near the King memorial was also unveiled. Bell said the goal of the event “is to bring people’s attention to the real meaning of this statue and make people feel a degree of comfort when they come into this atmosphere… this is a Frederick Law Olmstead park…all of his environmental things speak of peace and quiet and beauty…it fits right into this perfectly because its (the monument) enormously impressive.” He continued: “This (the display) tells the story to the word, from the beginning." The rededication and launching of the exhibit he added, is significant. “It’s important because I understand what it took to get here, and because Dr. King made the ultimate sacrifice.” People can now come and see the tribute to Dr. King. Then they can come to the park shelter house located right behind it to see the complete history of the making of the monument and its significance. In addition, a self-guided mobile audio tour makes it possible to simply use our phones to hear informational audio scripts narrated by Mr. Bell himself. There is also a 'Making of a Monument' exhibit at the Merriweather Library which will be displayed the entire month of February, Black History Month. A portable exhibit is available to take to schools and other organizations year round. -Future Programming“Plans are underway to have on-going use of the park for programming around Dr, King,,” noted Bell. For example, he said a committee is being formed to schedule a celebration to take place in the park on the day of Dr. King’s assassination on April 4. Also, local festival organizers (i.e. Juneteenth, Pine Grill Jazz Reunion etc.) will be encouraged to include the monument and exhibit in their festivities. In 1870 A Black Woman Sued for Reparations—and Won Henrietta Wood was born enslaved between 1818 and 1820. In 1834, the teenager was bought by a merchant in Louisville and taken from her family. She was soon sold again, to a French immigrant, William Cirode, who took her to New Orleans. Cirode returned to France in 1844, abandoning his wife, Jane, who eventually took Wood with her to Ohio, a free state. Then, in 1848, Jane Cirode went to a county courthouse and registered Wood as free. In 1853, Wood a free Black woman living and laboring as a domestic worker in Cincinnati, was lured across the Ohio River and into the slave state of Kentucky by a White man named Zebulon Ward who sold her to slave traders, who took her to Mississippi. A cotton planter bought her there and later took her to Texas, where she remained enslaved through the Civil War. Wood eventually returned to Cincinnati, and in 1870 sued Ward for $20,000 in damages and lost wages. In 1878, an all-White jury decided in Wood’s favor, with Ward ordered to pay $2,500, the largest sum ever awarded by a court in the United States in restitution for enslavement. Wood’s name never made it into the history books. When she died in 1912, her suit was already forgotten by all except her son. Today, it remains virtually unknown, even as reparations for slavery are once again in the headlines.

Trump Rolls Back Michelle Obama’s School Lunch Nutrition Rules The Trump administration announced a rollback of Michelle Obama’s signature initiative for healthy school lunches recently, coinciding with the former first lady’s birthday. Nutrition advocates attacked the proposal as undercutting the nutrition requirements in the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, a major project of the former first lady. “School kids now could eat pizza, hamburgers, french fries and cookies for lunch every day in place of the healthier, balanced school lunch now offered,” said Colin Schwartz, deputy director of legislative affairs for the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

The Case For Eating Organic… Dangerous, unsafe pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos, tons of which are being sprayed across millions of acres of U.S. farmland every year, are banned in Europe, but not in the U.S. Several states - Hawaii and California - have issued statewide bans and others, like New Jersey are taking steps to do the same. New York State’s Legislature passed a bill to ban the chemical, but Gov. Cuomo vetoed that bill promising to institute a ban on the pesticide by July 2021 through regulations not legislation. Meanwhile chlorpyrifos is known to pass easily from mother to fetus and has been linked to a wide range of serious medical problems including impaired development, Parkinson’s and some forms of cancer. When possible, buy/eat organic. Organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. ... Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.

'God Is Great': Interview with Kobe Bryant Gives Sneak Peek into Late Basketball Star's Faith In one of the most trying seasons of his life, Kobe Bryant learned one valuable lesson: “God is great.” After news broke Sunday night that Bryant, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others, were killed in a tragic helicopter accident over the weekend, social media lit up with posts remembering the inspiring basketball star for both his athletic prowess and his character. According to Faithwire, one post by megachurch pastor Mike Todd highlighted a clip from a 2006 interview with Stephen A. Smith who asked the legend about one of the most difficult times of his life. Three years prior, in 2003, the then 24-year-old was brought up on sexual assault charges. Several women filed a felony assault charge against Bryant, causing severe damage to his reputation and marriage. On the show “Quite Frankly,” Smith asked: “But what did you learn from that whole experience? Just having to go through what you went through?” “God is great,” Bryant exclaimed. “Is it that simple?” the interviewer queried.

“God is great,” Bryant repeated. “It doesn’t get much simpler than that.” Smith followed up asking Bryant if he truly knew that before being accused. “Did you know that? I mean everyone knows that but the way you know it now, did you know it before that incident took place?” Smith asked. “You can know it all you want, but until you have to pick up that cross that you can’t carry and He picks it up for you and carries you and the cross, then you know,” Bryant asserted as applause broke out in the audience.

The Passing of The African American Cultural Center's Amazing Agnes Bain

A

t press time we learned of the passing of Agnes Bain, our beloved quiet cultural warrior who led the African American Cultural Center for the past four decades.

Agnes Bain, the Executive Director of the Center, was probably one of the most “unsung heroines” in this community. She has produced 30 Pine Grill Reunion jazz concerts with such notables as Jimmy McGriff, Bill Doggett, Billy Taylor, Horace Silver, Houston Pearson, Etta Jones, Milt Jackson, Johnny Lytle, Hank Crawford, and Gloria Lynn, just to name a few and not to exclude Buffalo's own Jaman, DoDo Green, James "Pappy" Martin, and Count Rabbit. While thousands gather here for the reunion annually, many coming from across the country, the woman behind this much anticipated event, rarely, if ever, took center stage. The Cultural Center also houses the Paul Robeson Theatre, the second oldest component of the African American Cultural Center. It was founded in 1968 to nurture and showcase the talents of African American playwrights, producers, directors, actors and stage technicians in the City of Buffalo and the surrounding Western New York region. Ms. Bain is credited with over eighty African American productions working with such notables as Woodie King, Jr. (New York City producer/director/writer), Phylicia Ayers-Allen (Bill Cosby Show), Richard Gant (Rocky II), Karen White (Bill Cosby Show and Lean on Me), Theresa Merritt (renowned Broadway actress), Bill Cobb (The Bodyguard), not to forget Buffalo's Edward Lawrence, Edward G. Smith, Lorna C. Hill, Timothy Kennedy, Laverne Clay, and Fortunato Pezzimenti. She has worked with renowned dancers -- Pearl Primus, Mike Malone (Debbie Allen's teacher), Rod Rodgers, and Babatunde Olatunji. She presented plaques of distinction to Johnny Mathis, Cicely Tyson, and Ted Lange, welcoming them to Buffalo. The African American Cultural Center was founded in 1958 by Malcolm Erni, an evangelist with Caribbean roots who had a devout faith in the virtue of his ancestry. Born and raised in Buffalo NY, Erni dreamed of a cultural and spiritual sanctuary where young people would learn that, God is a God of all races and ethnic groups. “The vision of Malcolm Erni was ahead of its time,” she told The Challenger in a former interview. “ I think he was a genius. He wanted to build a place where young people, especially, would be able to learn about their heritage and culture and become better individuals because of this self-knowledge,” noted Ms. Bain. Under her guidance the Cultural Center continued to evolve in response to the changing landscape of real time and the future and remains a sentinel to Malcolm's founding vision. In addition to the Pine Grill Jazz Reunion and the Paul Robeson Theatre, there is the multi-disciplinary Cultural Enrichment / Educational After School Program and Jumpin' Jambalaya Summer Camp and the soul-stirring African American Cultural Center Dance and Drum Performance Company (its cornerstone component). Under her leadership, The African American Cultural Center stood firmly committed to promoting a positive sense of self among the community it was founded to serve. We salute our beloved Agnes M. Bain and say “Thank You” for all your years of service and dedication to your community!” (At press time we had no information on funeral arrangements.)

Will Holton’s Annual Talent Showcase – Love Cadenza VI - A Performance With a Purpose

F

or the past 12 years, Buffalo, native saxophonist Will Holton has showcased local talent and national talent with his much anticipated concert series. With a deep passion for the success of the community’s singers and musicians, Holton's shows - Love Cadenza, Night of Stars, Soulful Spring, Christmas to Remember, Generations, and Sax in The City – have successfully presented many of Buffalo's rising stars and have reintroduced some of the legends to a new audience, beautifully closing a musical generational gap. “My intention is for these artists to see higher in themselves and surpass their own goals,” the talented young musician said. “Some of the performers have turned into influential, powerful mainstays in Buffalo, and others are currently touring the world. “ His annual "Love Cadenza" concert is in its 6th year and has taken on a new meaning to Holton, who is celebrating his 40th Birthday. Before he would become one of the Queen Cities musical treasures, he would encounter two life-threatening experiences as an infant. -A Mother’s LoveWill's mother, Yvonne Holton, shares the following story of a mother’s love: "Will was born on Valentine's Day, and two days after he was born, the doctor says you can't take him home because he has complications; he has four holes in his heart. They (finally) released him saying we will see you in a month and will set up a surgery date for the heart. When I took him back Dr. Katherine at Children's Hospital asked, “Is this the same baby?” I said yeah, this is, and she said there's total healing, no holes, no need for surgery and no follow-up. Then two months later he developed spinal meningitis. He had a temperature of 105 degrees, went into a coma and was packed in ice at Children's Hospital. The doctor said if he wakes up, he'll be mentally and physically challenged. During this time I went to the local Church near the hospital and prayed and went to the prayer box and put all the money I had in the box. Will woke three days later, and he was screaming, and I said he's hungry. My son was fine. He was no longer having those complications. They tested his brain function and everything and he was perfectly fine. The only mark he has is on his left ankle.

There is so much power in prayer!” -A Concert From His Heart“It's purpose by design, and you can't argue that,” stated Will. “To be born on a day that is symbolic to the heart, have heart and other life-threatening complications then by the prayers of my mom, dad, and the grace of God, survive!...It's time to give back even more! “So I made a call to the American Heart Association of Buffalo and Niagara and left a message. I received a call back from Jackie Mangione, and she was happy about my survival, and my desire to give back. I will be doing more with the American Heart Association of Buffalo and Niagara beyond this show. “I’ve decided a portion of all proceeds will go to benefit the American Heart Association of Buffalo and Niagara annually as a tribute from myself to the world. “ -Love Cadenza VI Line Up “I'm so excited to work alongside and see the growth of a lot of these artists. he funk was on fire as Rhythm and Blues Hall of Famers The Ohio Players performed to a standing room only crowd at The Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Casino January 17. Since initially forming in Dayton in 1959 as The Ohio Untouchables, The Ohio Players’ fatback grooves remain cornerstones of that incredibly potent and fertile musical territory known as funk, formulating a soulful stew nourishing the likes of Dr. Dre, Too Short, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, too many hip-hop samples to count and a generation of significant funk bands that emerged from the Southern Ohio area throughout the 1970s and 1980s. And, of course, who can forget the scintillating covers of landmark albums like “Fire” and “Honey,” - now iconic images of African American sensuality. The set opened with the rollicking “Love Rollercoaster” and the current 12-piece incarnation of the band ( which features original members from the group’s 1970s commercial peak: drummer James “Diamond” Williams, guitarist Clarence “Chet” Willis, and keyboardist Billy Beck) still has the goods to tear the roof off with tight interplay, gutbucket bass and drums, stinging horn charts and that distinct synthesizer sheen-always a classy stamp of the Ohio Players sound. The 1977 concert favorite and ode to their home state “OH-I-O” followed with audience chanting the infectious chorus. Many musicologists (this writer included) have theorized why so many funky folk-Bootsy Collins, Lakeside, Slave & Steve Arrington, Sun, Zapp & Roger Troutman, Faze O-emerged from the bottom end of the Buckeye State in general and Dayton in particular. As “Diamond” explained in a post-show interview, it was a continuum of Dayton’s rich, yet unsung, jazz tradition of the 1940s and 1950s. “It’s the predecessors that were musicians that we grew up listening to. I’ll give you names that you wouldn’t recognize: Zeke Sloane, Joe Arnold and Shannon Bell. These are drummers, guitarists and saxophone players that were just incredible. Basically, we just developed the funk and our artistic ability-it was around us. When I was a little kid my dad was a jazz aficionado so he got me involved in jazz music and artistry around the city of Dayton and that’s basically where it came from. People will say it came out of the water but they weren’t affiliated with the musicians that inspired us and there were great musicians in the Dayton area and I think it just developed over time.” As the show progressed it became even more apparent how much this group has honored and added to that aforementioned musical tradition. “From the first note you know what an Ohio Players song is” said “Diamond” before dropping into that inimitable drum solo-and showing why he was ranked 72 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Drummers listthat heralds the lush “I Want To Free.” “Funky Worm” was performed with a gleeful aplomb while “Skin Tight” and “Sweet Sticky Thing” remain stone-cold funk exemplars. An off-the-cuff “Ecstasy” was greeted enthusiastically by hardcore fans before “Fire” brought the house down featuring a vibrant guitar solo by Edward “Rick” Ward- a formidable conclusion and confirmation that this venerable musical institution will be dropping funk bombs for years to come. The Ohio Players are now ingrained in both popular music and popular culture as a whole, “Diamond” is grateful and humbled by The Ohio Players’ legacy: “ To think that 45 years ago the music would still be played today in rotation and you have things like Spotify and not only radio stations and TV shows (“Hell’s Kitchen”) and movies it’s unbelievable. I’d like to think it’s the music itself, the work that we did to create that music to think that we had the ability to do that, we’re very fortunate.”

Serious Effects of Plastic Bags

W

hile plastic bags are very useful in our day-to-day lives, and we seemingly can’t do without them, they have a significant contribution to the environmental pollution, wildlife deaths, human health hazards, and other detrimental impacts. 1. Death of animals Plastic bags kill about 100,000 animals annually. Many animals, including whales, dolphins, turtles, penguins, and dolphins, ingest plastic bags as they mistake them food. Plastic cannot be digested properly and hence will accumulate in the stomach leading to the animal’s death.Even worse, the ingested plastics will remain intact even after the dead animal decomposes. That means another animal may ingest it and eventually suffer the same consequences.(An autopsy of the stomach of a beached whale found 20 square feet of plastic shopping bags that took up its whole stomach. Similar cases have been observed over the past few decades after plastic bags were introduced.) 2. Plastic bags are non-biodegradable Plastic can take up to 2000 years to completely decompose. In fact, all the plastic that has ever been manufactured still lingers in the environment. That means you’ll never live to see the decomposition of plastic. 3. Plastic bags are made from petroleum products Production of plastic takes 60-100 million barrels of oil from the world’s petroleum reserves. Therefore, plastic contributes significantly to the depletion of this valuable resource, making the prices of petroleum products to rise every passing day. 4. Plastic food storage packages have toxic chemicals Studies have shown that meals that are eaten or heated in plastic bags result in the development of ulcers, asthma, obesity, and certain cancers. This is attributed to the fact that plastic bags have some chemicals that will mix with the meal when heated. One of these chemicals is Bisphenol-A (BPA). 5. Toxic chemicals are released during plastic manufacturing Ingredients of plastic bags include a plethora of neurotoxic, carcinogenic, and hormonedisruptive chemicals. When released, they eventually end up in our ecosystem through the land, water, and air pollution. 6. Massive accumulations of plastic bags block drainage systems Plastic bag accumulations are one of the most common causes of drainage system clogging. Developing countries are the most affected with this problem. 7. Plastic bags are the main cause of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch Plastic bags have contributed significantly to a massive pile of plastic debris found in the North Pacific Ocean. The garbage pile, which is nearly double the size of Hawaii, is known as the Great Pacific Garbage. According to the Wild Studies Institute, 80% of this garbage in the ocean originates from land. 8. 93% of Americans age six years and above test positive for BPA We’ve seen that Bisphenol-A is a chemical compound that is used in the manufacture of plastic bags. This chemical is found in plastic food cans and water bottles. When the chemical bonds weaken, BPA is released and normally leaches into your food and water. 9. Plastic bags expose children to lung complications According to the World Health Organization, when pregnant women are exposed to high concentrations of Phthalates and BPA, which are chemical compounds found in plastic, they may give birth to children with lung problems. These children may also be at high risk of developing asthma later in life. Moreover, children’s exposure to these chemicals has been associated with increased insulin resistance and high blood pressure. 10. Plastic bag chemicals can affect reproduction in women Certain chemicals used in the manufacturing of plastic bags, especially BPA, act in the same way as estrogen. In the long run, these chemicals may interfere with hormonal balance in women and affect reproduction. 11. Plastic can increase the risk of prostate cancer in men While plastic-related chemicals largely affect women and children, men are also at risk. According to a study by the World Health Organization, men who are often in contact with phthalates and BPA have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. These chemicals can also undermine their reproductive health. 12. Plastic bags result in the pollution of groundwater Then, the detrimental effects of plastics would be passed through the ground to our bodies through the plants we consume and the water we drink. 13. Plastic pollution disrupts the natural food chain 14. By 2050, the oceans will have more waste plastics than fish During their production. You’ll need about 22 gallons of water to produce one pound of plastic. There’s no need to waste so much water manufacturing harmful plastics. -Sonia Madaan eartheclipse.com

Forever Mamba: The Life and Legacy of Kobe Bean Bryant Stephen A. Crockett Jr.

L

os Angeles Lakers great and five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant was among nine killed in a deadly helicopter crash in California on Sunday. The smooth shooting guard and perennial NBA AllStar who was one of the league’s most prolific scorers was with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, when the plane crashed near Calabasas. He was 41. The son of former NBA player, Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant and Pamela Cox Bryant, Kobe Bean Bryant, a 6-feet 6-inch shooting guard, entered the NBA straight out of Lower Merion High School from the Philadelphia suburbs in 1996 when he was just 17. The very next year, he would be voted to his first NBA All-Star team, and by the time he retired in 2016, after 20 years playing for the Lakers, he would be an 18-time All-Star. His accomplishments read like a wish list for every NBA player: “Bryant retired in 2016 as a five-time NBA champion, 11-time All-NBA first-team selection, 2008 MVP, two-time Finals MVP, 18-time All-Star and four-time All-Star MVP who spent his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also won gold medals with USA Basketball at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics,” according to USA Today. Kobe’s road to success would not be without some major bumps along the way. Early on in his career, Kobe struggled to find his shot, but by his fourth season, Kobe and “The Big Aristotle,” center Shaquille O’Neal, would go on to win the first of three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002. And while the winning was great, O’Neal and Bryant could never really find their footing as the two alpha dogs would bark about their respective roles on the team. Shaq would complain that Bryant played selfishly and Shaq would often talk to the press and publicly ignore Bryant as a member of the team. In July 2003, Bryant was arrested on claims that he’d sexual assaulted an employee at a Colorado hotel where Bryant was staying before a surgery. The woman accused Bryant of raping her; Bryant claimed the sex was consensual. The charges would later be dropped when she refused to testify. Later, the accuser would file a civil suit against Bryant and the case was eventually settled out of court. Bryant would apologize to his wife, Vanessa, for the affair but he did not admit guilt. The next year, Shaq was traded from the Lakers and Kobe would go on to re-sign with the Lakers for $135 million. Bryant would return the Lakers to dominance in 2009 when he would lead the Lakers to the NBA Championship over the Orlando Magic and Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard. In 2010, Bryant would take his Lakers back to the NBA Finals against Boston Celtics’ big three: Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. The Lakers found themselves down 3-2 in the series before winning the last two games at home for Bryant’s fifth championship title. But it wasn’t just his impact on the court; he once tried his hand at rapping and while even Bryant would’ve told you he never should have tried his hand at rapping, a video shoot led him to Vanessa and the tenacious offensive threat took his shot. The two would marry in 2001 after a brief courtship and have four daughters: Natalia, 17; Gianna, 13; Bianka, 3, and Capri, who was born just seven months ago. Thankfully, Bryant would also try his hand at filmmaking; his short-film Dear Basketball: The Legend of Kobe Bryant would win the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2018, with Bryant listed as producer-screenwriter. Bryant was widely considered one of the best basketball players to ever grace the court, having led the NBA in scoring for two seasons and was third on the league’s all-time regular season scoring list until Saturday when new Lakers star LeBron James eclipsed his scoring record. “It’s just too much. It’s too much. The story is too much,” James said of Bryant after he surpassed him on the scoring list. “It doesn’t make sense. Just to make a long story short, now I’m here in a Lakers uniform, in Philadelphia, where he’s from. The first time I ever met him, gave me his shoes on All-Star Weekend. It’s surreal. It doesn’t make no sense, but the universe just puts things in your life. And I guess when you live in the right way, when you just give it everything to whatever you’re doing, things happen organically. “And it’s not supposed to make sense, but it just happens. And I’m happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play, one of the all-time greatest Lakers. The man has two jerseys hanging up in Staples Center. It’s just crazy.” James wore sneakers inscribed with “Mamba 4 Life” and “8/24 KB” in gold marker honoring Kobe’s nickname “Mamba” and the jersey numbers he wore, 8 and 24 during his days with the Lakers. Bryant would send out this tweet honoring James’ accomplishment.

ssembly House 150 (AH150) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for enrollment in its SACRA (Society for the Advancement of Construction Related Arts) program. A paid 15-week, construction skills training program focused on carpentry and woodworking, SACRA provides skill-building, work readiness and job placement services. Participants can earn money while learning construction skills under the instruction of highly talented craftsmen and tradespeople. Classes will start February 18. “SACRA students work on community projects, visit worksites and landmarks, and gain exposure to career paths through field trips and workshops with guest experts,” said Dennis Maher, Assembly House 150 executive director. “The training is designed for people who enjoy working with their hands, creative problem-solving, learning about the history of buildings in Buffalo, and working collaboratively as a team.” No cost to participate and all trainees earn a stipend over the 15 weeks. No prior experience in construction is necessary. Workshops include basic framing, cabinet making, stair building, wood window building, stained glass, plaster repair, painting and other skills. All participants learn proper use of hand/power tools, math and construction-document reading, and material identification and selection. SACRA facilitates job placement for all program graduates. Training takes place at Assembly House 150—historic, 1870s-era church in downtown Buffalo—that provides a unique and inspiring learning laboratory. The site surrounds participants with examples of design and construction excellence. For more information and to schedule an interview, call 716-560-8170 or email or info@assemblyhouse150.org. REDEDICATION EVENT continued from page 3 African American Heritage Corridor tour will also be sought. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservancy is planning improvements to the area surrounding the monument including new lighting and new landscape. Input from the community is welcome. “We want this (monument and park) to be continually recognized for its value,” noted Bell. … After 36 years of existence, he find sit hard to believe that anyone would want to destroy the memorial. “What are we afraid of?” he said in reference to the colossal image. “King said it (in the video today), ‘Be Black. Be proud!’ “ “I was fortunate enough to be the chairman of the committee that started it,” concluded Brother Bell. “Now I’m chairman of the committee that did this(rededication)…to kind of finish it.” Rededication events took place January18. Benefits of African Centered Education Develops African Culture Consciousness One effect of the enslavement of African people has been the distortion of their cultural consciousness. Preeminent educa-tor and author Dr. Amos Wilson argues that when a people’s culture is distorted, their capacity to appropriately organize, evaluate, and classify information to deal with reality is impaired. He further argued that culture must be used as a conduit for solving problems and meeting the needs of the people. African-centered scholars and educators argue that children of African descent must be taught their culture through a pro-cess of re-Africanization. This process begins with an African-centered education that entails studying, observing, and eventually fully practicing their culture that defines, creates, celebrates, sustains and develops them. Creates African Self-Identity During the transatlantic slave trade that took place between the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean, millions of African people were sold into slavery. Over the course of 400 years, African people’s identity has been distorted as they were stripped of their original languages, original African names and spirituality. In addition, African people on the continent experienced a different kind of identity crisis through colonization, which divided Africa into colonies and imposed for-eign languages and culture values. African-centered scholars and educators attempt to provide a framework for the reconstruction of African cultures and identities around the best morals, values, and cultural practices that both traditional and contemporary African societies have to offer. Produces African-Institution Builders An institution is defined as “any structure or mechanism of social order governing the behavior of a set of individuals within a given community and are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern living behavior.” In “The State of African Education,” renowned educator and author the late Dr. Asa Hilliard writes: “A global system of power distribution has dictated and continues to dictate the nature of the education and socialization processes.” African-centered educators maintain that there can be no true African-centered education until people of African descent control the institutions within their community. Institution building involves creating the necessary agencies that are designed to impart knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to survive and progress. Produces Black Nation Builders Along with culture and identity, education must help restore the concept of nationhood, manhood and womanhood for African people, according to historian and educator Dr. John Henrik Clarke. African-centered educators believe that wherever Blacks happen to be in the world, they constitute a nation or a nation that is within a nation, and that concept is called Black nationalism. Dr. Kmt G. Shockley states in Culture, Power, and Education: The Philosophies and Pedagogy of African Centered Educa-tors: “Black nationalism requires that Blacks develop a sense of agency toward fixing the problems within their own communities. Agency eventually leads toward nation building. Agency and nation building involve the intentional and focused attempt to ‘develop African youth to be specifically trained to further develop and ‘administrate the state’ (that is, control the community). “Blacks cannot learn to ‘administrate the state’ if they are not equipped with attitudes that teach them that they, in fact, should administer and be agents for Black upliftment.” Empowers Black Students Professor and author, Dr. Wade Nobles states in Madhubuti & Madhubuti that an “African-centered curriculum appropri-ately connects the Black experience to the African cultural world view and value system. This connection facilitates a healthy context from which African-Americans can learn about and understand themselves and the world.” A study published in the journal Child Development found “racial pride to be the most powerful factor in protecting children from the sting of discriminatory behavior. It directly and positively related to three out of four academic out-comes—grade-point averages, educational aspirations, and cognitive engagement—and was also related to resilience in the face of discrimination.” (Source: Black Star News)
