New RFD Fire/Rescue Boat Named After Former Deputy Mayor Leonard E. Redon Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the Rochester Fire Department’s new fire/rescue boat, call sign Marine 1, will be named the “Leonard E. Redon,” in honor of the former Deputy Mayor who passed away in 2017.

“Len Redon was an avid sailor who understood the complexities of maritime safety,” said Mayor Warren. “As Deputy Mayor, he made a strong and convincing argument to add this boat to the Rochester Fire Department inventory. He was also the kind of man who was always willing to help, so it’s very fitting that when a call for help goes out along Rochester’s waterfront it will be the Leonard E. Redon that responds.”At 37-feet long, the Leonard E. Redon is deployed by firefighters from the Lake Avenue Fire Station for water-based emergencies on Lake Ontario, within the Port of Rochester and on the Genesee River up to the Veterans Bridge at Rt. 104. t is the most capable fire/rescue boat on the south shore of Lake Ontario.

City Tax Bills Due July 31; Property Owners Advised Not To Risk Late Penalties The City of Rochester has completed mailing its 2021-2022 property tax bills. For residential property owners who have not received their tax bill or property owners who do not have escrow arrangements with their mortgagee are urged to contact the City’s Tax Information Office at 428-6940, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The first installment of the 20212022 City property tax bill is due by July 31, 2021. Payments may be mailed to: Property Taxes, City Treasurer, P.O. Box 14270, Rochester, NY 14614-0270. Taxes can also be paid in person at the Finance Department’s cashier window located at City Hall, 30 Church St. City property owners can also pay their property taxes online at www.cityofrochester.gov .

Howard Eagle: Rochesters Anti-Racist Activist Toots His Own Horn!

Depending on who you ask, people will either tell you that I have a deserved or undeserved reputation for bashing or judging White folks. It is not true. I make every effort never to judge, nor necessarily bash anyone. However, I will, and I do routinely call White folks out on racism.

Also, I do not shy away from debunking the widespread, popular mantra and myth that the sole, or even major problem with racism is institutions and systems, as opposed to individuals. Instead, I also routinely emphasize the vitally important, objective fact that institutions and systems do not establish, perpetuate, and/ or maintain themselves --- individuals do.

As a deadly serious antiracist activist, and aspiring, authentic, anti-racist expert --- what is less known about me is that I actually praise White folks who get it right (whom by the way, as far as I can determine, are few and far in between) --- such as the woman whom I refer to as the queen of whiteness, Dr. Robin Di Angelo. I was first introduced to Dr. Di Angelo's work years ago I've been studying her ever since.

White people like Dr. Di Angelo are valuable, not only because of their extensive knowledge regarding the historical and contemporary existence, functioning, and many manifestations of racism, but because she and others like her, produce a reality by which Black and other anti-racist experts and practitioners of color (make assertions like: 'don't argue with me --- argue with your own whiteness expert.' This type of challenge will sometimes stop White racists in their tracks, and actually move them toward introspection, which is

an important step, in order to get past what the man whom I refer to as the King of antiracism, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, calls the "heartbeat," i.e. ., chronic denial.

Di Angelo is so skillful as an anti-racist writer and educator that many racist, White conservatives seem happy to see her latest book, Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm. That is to say, many racist, white conservatives are intentionally interpreting her latest work to mean that white liberals are the "real racists," as opposed to conservatives. On the contrary, she's making the point that many liberals cause more race-based harm mainly because they spend more time around Black folks and other folks of color (attempting and/or pretending to be allies). On the other hand, we know that white conservatives don't pretend, and generally don't hobnob with Black folks, nor other folks of color.

With regard to her new book, we congratulate Dr. Di Angelo for "keeping race on

the table," which she argues, most, if not all White folks, constantly attempt to push as far underground as possible (based mainly on their own deep-seated, White fragility, and cognitive dissonance).

It is interesting to note that our Brother Minister Malcolm X taught us about the very same liberal/conservative phenomenon almost sixty (60) years ago --- via his "wolf or fox" analogy. Brother Malcolm was saying (in his own unique way) the same thing that Dr. Di Angelo is saying today --- when it comes to racial harm --- "that Liberal

City Hall Reopens to the Public Starting Monday most offices in City Hall will reopen to the pubic from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m Monday through Friday for walk-in services; something residents have not been able to do since July of 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The departments that will be open to the public without appointment effective Monday July 26 will include: Parking Violations, User Fee, Tax and Assessment, Treasury, Public Works, Permit and Inspection, Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency, Civil Service, City Clerk, Corporation Counsel and Real Estate.

The City Hall lobby and inside observation deck will also be open.

Buffalo Common Council meetings on the 13th floor will once again be open to the public to attend as well.

In addition, Virtual meetings will continue to be streamed live on the Council’s Facebook page. The Council has been closed to the public since March 2020.

The Board of Education offices will remain closed to walk-in traffic.

"Masks will be required for unvaccinated visitors, but no proof of vaccination will be required.," Mayor Brown stated in a news release.

“You took a beautiful soul from us…”

Family expressed their grief over tragic loss of three-year old Shaquille Walker Jr. Thanks community for its support.

D

anette Jenifer was able to compose herself just long enough to express her profound grief in a few simple words.

“The people that did this…you took a beautiful soul from us,” she began. “Y'all really, like, ruined my life. Yes, I do have another son to live for, ”she said referring to her one-year-old. “But I’ll never get another Shaquille Walker Jr.” Those who took Shaquille from her, continued the 24-year-old mother, also “took him from his little brother” who he loved to hug, and “taught how to brush his teeth and put on his clothes.”

Standing with Danette at the press conference last Thursday in MLK Park was her father, Poshine Jennifer, Artavia Anderson, her mother and Venita Underwood.

“To those who have supported us at this very harsh time, we want to say thank you so very much,” said Mr. Jennifer “We don’t have no ill will against nobody – never did never will- but we have a family member that left tragically and it’s a very sad situation, but everybody's going to pull through.”

Tina Sanders, the dedicated community worker and founder of No More Tears ,who reached out to the family and provided assistance, was also on hand.

“On behalf of No More Tears, we have got to remember that this baby….this young vibrant baby never had a chance to live his Shaquille Walker Jr. life to the fullest. You destroyed a family” and devastated a community, she said directing her words to those involved in little Shaquille’s death. “We should be celebrating, not talking about the loss of a baby. So wherever you may be, however you may feel, it’s time for you to come forward.”

She urged the community to keep the family in their prayers “We must remember this family even after the service (funeral) is over, because people tend to forget” she said. “They will still need wrapping arms, loving care and support.”

The adorable little boy was caught in a crossfire when shots rang out on the Fourth of July holiday as a crowd watched fireworks in the Ferry Grider Homes on Donovan Drive.

Shaquille was hit in the head. He was rushed to Children’s hospital but died a few days later from his injuries. Two others were injured.

Shaquille family laid him to rest last Saturday. The funeral was held at True Bethel Baptist Church where the Rev. Darius Pridgen preached the eulogy.

Before slavery ended, newly established police departments were deployed to maintain a racial hierarchy system, beginning a long history of racially biased control of Black people that continued during Reconstruction, through the era of lynching and segregation and to the present.

The rise of policing centered on the preservation of slavery. “Slave patrols” in the North and South focused their efforts on apprehending and returning “runaway slaves” to slave owners, deterring revolts by enslaved people and maintaining discipline and control. Although slave patrols were abolished at the end of the Civil War, their racially violent functions were assumed by White vigilante organizations and soon took root in police departments across the US. The rise of police forces in the U.S. during the early 19th century was spurred by the growth of cities and the abolition of slavery in the North. The first American police department was established in Boston in 1838 and was more focused on responding to disorder than crime. As African Americans fled the Jim Crow South in the late 29th century and early 20th century, Continued Page 15

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome

W

hen it comes to mental health, there have been many studies on the impact of such factors as social determinants of health (economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context - ODPHP Healthy People 2020), discrimination, police brutality, and even in the history of mental health treatment in the United States dating back to the work of Benjamin Rush, the socalled “father of American psychiatry” and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

But have you heard of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome? Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome has been detailed in the book of the same name by social worker and researcher, Dr. Joy DeGruy. It is defined as, “....a condition that exists when a population has experienced multigenerational trauma resulting from centuries of slavery and continues to experience oppression and institutional racism today. Added to this is the belief (real or imagined) that the benefits of the society in which they live are not accessible to them.”

What she details is that African American slaves endured trauma which has the same diagnostic criteria as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD includes a stressor such as a person who was exposed to death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence. These must be experienced through direct exposure, witnessing in person, indirectly, learning that a close relative or close friend was exposed to trauma or repeated or extreme indirect exposure to adverse details of the event usually in the course of professional duties (for example, first responders).

There are many symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, including recurrent involuntary, and intrusive memories, traumatic nightmares, intense or prolonged distress after exposure to traumatic reminders, among others.

What Dr. DeGruy so clearly states is that African American slaves were obvious victims of repeated trauma that began during the Middle Passage and continued through the centuries that followed. Additionally, she describes how the systematic destruction of relationships caused by chattel slavery was meant to break the will of slaves’ which was passed down through the generations.

This is explained by the concept of epigenetics (how your environment influences your genes). When taking this into consideration, it is clear that Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is a factor in the lives of African Americans today.

From slavery, through the Jim Crow Era, and more recently with the public deaths of George Floyd and many others, our mental health is being affected on many levels, even in our DNA. What has resulted is that African Americans share differential anxiety and survival behaviors that have been passed down through the many generations, many of whom suffered from PTSD. While there are many risk factors for mental health disorders, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is one that cannot be discounted for the Black community. When taking into consideration how racism and oppression has impacted our communities it is critical that we know our history from this perspective.

Coronavirus Update Ominous signs of a coronavirus backslide are piling up in the US. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidance yesterday recommending everyone over the age of 2 wear a mask while in school, regardless of vaccination status. That’s a stricter position than the one the CDC took earlier this month. One reason for the tighter precaution? Many school-aged children are not eligible for a Covid-19 vaccination yet, and recent virus surges

have overwhelmingly affected unvaccinated people.

Albright-Knox Hires Dr. Callie Johnson as Director of Minority Bar Urges Common Council, Mayor Brown Pass & Sign the Right To Know Law for Buffalo!

he Minority Bar Association of WNY Criminal Justice Reform Task Force has worked with community stakeholders over the last year to provide impactful, common-sense recommendations for policing reforms. One of those reforms is the Right to Know Law, which has been enacted in New York City and Syracuse. Taking inspiration from these versions and others, the MBAWNY Criminal Justice Reform Task Force drafted the first version of the Right to Know Law for Buffalo. If passed and signed by the mayor, this bill to amend the Buffalo City Code and Charter will provide the public with notice of the reasons behind their encounters with the Buffalo Police Department (BPD), as well as information on how to file a complaint. The law is also designed to increase transparency in police practices and restore trust between the BPD and the community.

After six (6) months in the Buffalo Common Council Legislative Committee, the Right to Know Law was to be considered by the Buffalo Common Council on Tuesday 6/22/21, but was then tabled for revision. The press conference will discuss the status of the bill, and the impact of any revisions made.

1st Annual Pilgrim Family Fest Weekend July 30 & 31!

he first annual Pilgrim Family Fest 2021 two -day event will feature vendors, live music food trucks and more!

The festival kicks off Friday, July 30 with a Fish Fry and Live Music from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 665 Michigan, where the Rev. Frank Bostic is Pastor. The theme is “Where I Come From.”

Zaila Avant-Garde 2021 Winner of Scripps National Spelling Bee, is First African American Champion !

Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from the New Orleans area, won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee on July 8th making her the first African American champion in the bee’s 96 year history.

Spelling “murraya” ( a type of tree) correctly for the competition win, Zaila knocked down a plethora of difficult words over multiple rounds during the competition! The teen had been practicing for two years to gear up for this years event.

She recently told ABC’s Good Morning America that she hopes her historic win will inspire other young Black people in the United States to excel at spelling. “You don’t really see too many African Americans doing too well in spelling bees and that’s a bit sad, because it’s a really good thing … and kind of a gate-opener to be interested in education.” The only Black winner before her was Jody-Anne Maxwell, representing Jamaica in 1998.

Back in 1936, MacNolia Cox a 13 year old girl from Akron Ohio made it to the final round of the National Spelling Bee. She was the first Black student to get that far in the competition. The eighth grader was one of the last five spellers left on stage.

The judges, all Southern educators were reportably becoming visibly uncomfortable.

They gave her the word “Nemesis” a word that was technically a proper noun and not an eligible word, But it was too late and MacNolia was out.

Zaila, who will receive a $50,000 cash prize for the win, is not only a champion at spelling. She is also a basketball prodigy who has appeared in a commercial with Stephen Curry and owns three Guinness World Records for dribbling multiple balls simultaneously. Former president Obama said in a tweet after her win, "Congrats, Zaila—your hard work is paying off. We’re all proud of you.”

Zaila says she hopes to one day play basketball at Harvard before a career at NASA or as a coach in the NBA.

Free Sports Programs Join The Free Soccer For Success Program

Soccer for Success is a Free after-school program for children in grades K-8 that encourages physical activity, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle. The program will be held in parks throughout the City of Buffalo and Lackawanna for children ages 5-13 years old.

Children will learn soccer skills and nutrition basics. Practices are 90 minutes, three days a week. Professional coaches are trained and background checked. There are opportunities to join the coaching team and an opportunity to sign up for the All Girls virtual program designed for girls grades K-8.

ally but serves as a city-wide reunion. It is a celebration for Buffalo natives and a homecoming for those Buffalonians who have moved away. The City of Good Neighbors reunite in the spirit of agreement to show some “Buffalove” by reacquainting, maintaining kinship ties, and even making new friendships. This year the Pine Grill Jazz Reunion will feature a new component of art. Artists will join the performers onstage, both starting and completing an entire work of art before your eyes.

“I’ve worked with so many fine artists who have said they listen to jazz while painting or composing a work of art. I thought it would be wonderful to watch them work to a live element, creating an original work based on how the

music makes them feel in that very moment,” says Yao Kahlil Newkirk, one of the hosts for this year’s Reunion. Yao also serves as the Artistic Director of the renowned Paul Robeson Theatre. These one-of-akind paintings will be donated to the African American Cultural Center where they will be on display following the Pine Grill event, before being sold at an in-house/ virtual auction.

Pappy Martin Leagacy Masten Jazz Fest Continues Sunday July 25 in MLK Park

The Future is Bright for Violin Sibling Trio

B

orn and raised in Buffalo, Vibrant Strings is an amazing violin trio that consists of three talented siblings, Johnny, Jaliyah & Rahim. All are graduates of Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts and all pursuing college degrees locally while simultaneously raising the positive energy with every note they play.

It all started when their grandfather, noted musician and conductor Larry Salter, took them to the Museum of Science for a visit as youngsters where they witnessed a concert by the Muhammad School of Music featuring young Black children that looked like them playing their violins.

It was at that moment they showed immediate interest and their grandfather signed them up for private violin lessons at the School and rented violins for each of them from Monaco’s Violin Shop.

Johnny, the eldest of the group, started his music lessons at age 7, Jaliyah, the only female of the group started at age 5 and Rahim, the youngest of the group started at age 8.

From 5th grade through college their private instructors were among the list of great musician instructors in the city of Buffalo that included Henri Muhammad of Muhammad School of Music, Buffalo Philharmonic associate concertmaster Amy Glidden and BPO violinist Richard Kaye. Their hard work has paid off!

Very active in the community the Vibrant Strings, at just 26, 24 and 18, aim to share a positive message through music. Although classically trained, the trio plays all genres.

From Classical, R&B, and Hip Hop to Jazz, Gospel, Pop they have performed in multiple cities around the United States lifting spirits through every note !

They've played alongside and opened up for The Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall; The Dance Theatre of Harlem at The Shea's ; the Rochester Gateways Music Festival and numerous times for Mayor Byron Brown as well as for The Buffalo Urban League and The Black Achievers Awards annual gala. Johnny has played four years with UB Symphony Orchestra. And perhaps most significantly, the trio is currently a member of their grandfather's Larry Salter Soul Orchestra! Vibrant Strings has been spotlighted and interviewed on local news and radio stations as well as featured in Profile Magazine.

In addition to music, they each have individual successful interests. Johnny is a model and has worked with Catalyst Gym and Buffalo ProFit. He also body builds and is building his brand in the financial industry.

Jaliyah is an author to children’s literacy books pertaining to music - Coloring With Kyrie & Learning A through G With Kyrie both available on Amazon and at local bookstores. Jaliyah is also an entrepreneur and Criminal Justice is the field she is working towards for her soon future career.

Rahim is an actor and has had cameos in some movies and TV series such as “For Life,” where Curtis 50 Cent Jackson is among the executive producers, as well as the series “FBI” created by Dick Wolf; and Alemaedae Theatre Productions of “Daddy's Girl Club,” SkoVu TV & Amazon Prime. He also recently performed a lead role in the play “Pipeline” directed and performed at The University at Buffalo. Pipeline is one of the 12 plays and five musicals Rahim has performed in City of Buffalo.

During Quarantine a different platform for music appreciation was brought to light by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

This platform was named Verzuz. It started out as a DJ battle.

As the battle went on the history of the music we were listening to was told. Verzuz didn’t end with the two producers previously named. In fact it was just the beginning of something special. After the initial battle between the two founders the series continued to put on some legendary battles that fans had clamored for over the years. Sometimes the artist involved were those that had feuded “on wax”. Feel free to Google “on wax” in the Urban Dictionary on your phone.

Hopefully, you’re all caught up now. Hip Hop though has been battling an abstract “artist.” That artist is Death. How ironic? When something was dope in Hip Hop growing up it was Def. The latest artist to lose a Verzuz to Death was one of my favorites growing up. “Meet Biz Markie!”

Also known as DJ Biz Markie or Marcel Theo Hall. Biz Markie died on Friday, July 16. He was 57 years old. In April we lost Earl “DMX” Simmons at 50 and Gregory Jacobs a.k.a.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the fatal drowning rate of African American children is three times higher than White children.

Now that the pandemic restrictions are easing and Summer 2021 is ushering in, more summer recreational family outings are being centered around beaches, lakes and public/private pools.

Children and adults of color are of a higher risk of drowning. A recent study showed if a parent does not know how to swim, there is only a 13% chance their child will learn how to swim.

Victoria W. Wolcott, a professor of History at the University of Buffalo, studied the effects of racial segregation in the 20th century at municipal pools which relied on the exclusion of Blacks.

Professor Wolcott wrote in her research, the chairman of Charlotte Park in North Carolina in 1960 stated "Public order is more important than the rights (civil) to use public facilities" "Swimming pools and beaches were among the most segregated and fought over public spaces in the North and South. White stereotypes of Blacks as diseased and sexually threatening served as the foundation for this segregation." notes Professor Walcott Hopeful Black swimmers were not admitted to pools for fear of fights and general disorder.

When activist protested the exclusion of Blacks at a municipal pool's Whites in Cincinnati, Ohio threw nails at the bottom of one the local pool. This kind of mindless segregation and overt cruelty had a profound impact on the Black community, so many children never learned to swim As parents and members of the community, we must be intentional in the removing of old beliefs that water is dangerous, and make sure our children take swimming lessons and learn other aspects of water safety is key. lmani Bashir, full time writer, former broadcaster and -a Mom, wrote in her article "Teaching my Black Son to Swim" (New York Times, June 17, 2021), remembers taking her young son Nasir to "mommy and me" classes just after he turned one. Bashir fondly remembers being taught how to swim by her father at an early age.

By teaching children to swim when they are young there is an 88% reduction of children drowning between the ages of 1 -4 years old. Thankfully, I learned to swim, while a young camper at Montgomery Neighborhood Center at the Seneca Park pool.

Adult supervision is crucial when it comes to children being safe around water. Please note and follow these water safety tips recommended by the National YMCA: Teach children to always ask permission to go near water. Drownings can happen very quickly and quietly.

Only swim in designated swimming areas. Pay attention to sign postings.

Empty Kiddie pools immediately after use or securely cover them.

State Leaders Announce $219,000 In State Funding For Stop The Violence Coalition And Peacemakers Address Gun Violence New York State Senator Tim Kennedy, New York State Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Senator Sean Ryan, and Assemblymember Jon Rivera recently gathered to announce $65,000 in state funding for the Stop The Violence Coalition and $154,000 for the Buffalo Peacemakers to address the rise of gun violence in the City of Buffalo.

•Stop The Violence Coalition (STVC) is a collaboration of community-based organizations formed in 2004 in response to the overwhelming number of homicides in the city of Buffalo. Their mission is to stop the violence plaguing our neighborhoods and to take the initiative to make our city a safer place to live. The Coalition’s work occurs on the street – intervening where conflicts arise.

•The Buffalo Peacemakers Violence and Gang Intervention Program is a group of volunteers and part-time staff members who formed in 2007 to provide proactive intervention into the cycle of violence in the lives of gang-involved or atrisk youth in Buffalo. The $219,000 in funding secured by the state legislators will support the organizations by helping them expand to additional Buffalo neighborhoods and increasing their outreach efforts to address the root causes of violence in the community.

Why India Walton's Win Was Not Supposed To Happen

We Are on the Verge of Making History

here have been three mayors in succession in Buffalo who were first elected as Common Council Member or some other city political seat, who went on to become a New York State Senator, and then Mayor of Buffalo. They are Jimmy Griffin, Anthony Masiello, and Byron Brown. Byron was promised to be Masiello's successor as early as 1997!

Jim Pitts had absolutely no chance of becoming mayor, because Grassroots had made that deal and backed Masiello for his re-election. Now, following that trajectory, who was in line to be the Gang of 18's- (oh, y'all forgot about that group that really runs Buffalo)- next Mayor? Why it was Tim Kennedy, of course! The only difference being, Kennedy was first elected to a county seat before he became a state senator. That planned ascension is the main reason the Gang worked so hard to defeat me in the Special Election for the 63rd District State Senate seat back in 2012. I would have broken their line of succession plan, and would have thereby altered Buffalo's mayoral future.

e are on the verge of making history again in Buffalo.

In November 2005, Buffalo elected its first African American mayor, Byron Brown. On June 22,2021, Buffalo, made history again when India Walton won the Democratic Primary election for mayor. . If she is victorious in November, she will become Buffalo's first woman and African American woman as well as Buffalo's first Democratic Socialist to lead this city! Which means, it ain't over till it's over, and we have to get out and vote one more time come this fall!

We also have to become educated as a community and not allow the desperate, shameful fear mongering's used by the Brown campaign confuse us.

A Democratic Socialist is defined as a political philosophy supporting political democracy, within a socially owned economy, as the soon to be Madam Mayor elect describes - simply People over Profit. Let us not be fooled with the scare tactics that’s being implemented by the current administration.

Here's another "scary" term Brown likes to bring up: defunding the police.. Let's look at the term. Defunding the police does not mean dismantling the police. It just means allocating monies to non-police services like mental health issues as well as various other social services.

Demilitarizing the police is another issue that needs to be addressed. Do we need an occupying army in our community? No, so why do we have police officers looking like they're going into combat? Why do the police have military style vehicles and equipment?

Back to the election. On the Eastside, how is it that we as a people allow ourselves to be divided by leadership? Our elected officials work for us. Yet we treat them like celebrities.

Meanwhile, many of the neighborhoods on the East side look like war zones. Where is all that Buffalo Billions money?

Why is all the money, that’s our money going to develop projects on the waterfront and Canal Side and downtown? Why is only kibbles and bits of that money coming to the East side of Buffalo? Residents of the East Side, there is no way you can be happy after 16 years of the first Black mayor's reign; mis-leadership that has purposely and financially abandoned us from the very beginning. Well people it is time to wake up. In November we'll have a chance to change all that by voting for India Walton! I’m Just Saying...

That is also why they found a way to remove Antoine Thompson out of the senate, because Antoine was in line to follow that formula the gang had for choosing their mayoral candidate(s). Remember, Antoine was not supposed to be elected state senator.

The Gang, which truly runs Buffalo, had picked and elected Mark Coppola as their choice for senator. They did not think that Antoine would be able to defeat Coppola, but he did. So, the Gang used the Issue of gay marriage, and a few homophobic Black pastors, to undermine Antoine. These pastors threw their support behind Mark Grisanti for senator, and the rest is history. The irony of this is that Grisanti double-crossed the pastors, and his own Republican Party, by voting for the gay marriage bill! Governor Andrew Cuomo quickly rewarded Grisanti's loyalty and vote, by making him a state supreme court judge!

Fast forward to now, and we have a Black female community activist who has totally upset the Gang of 18's apple cart, and has broken their line of succession plan for becoming mayor of Buffalo. Byron Brown cannot deliver the Mayor"s seat to Tim Kennedy if he himself is no longer mayor! That is why Paladino and other developers are so upset, right now. And Black supporters of Byron Brown are thinking the contemplated write-in attempt is all about them!

With the mayor's seat in Byron's hand, he could readily pass it over to Kennedy.

Black people, please do not allow yourselves to be used to perpetuate White supremacists' thinking, or to deny a Black female an opportunity to run this city!

Europeans have continued to miseducate us all when they have had the chance to do so. Just think about some real facts, like nearly every institution of higher learning in America had its beginnings in the enslavement of African people. Harvard’s story is best known but the universities of North and South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi had similar beginnings. Rhode Island and New England were the same. These institutions of higher learning were financed by the enslavement of African people. What do you think they were organized to promote?

Then they had to convince us, which wasn’t that hard because they already controlled what we thought when they systematically began to separate children from parents on plantations and then forbid the teaching of reading and writing to all African people; actually making it a crime, punishable by death, for anyone to teach a Black person how to read and write.

Then they wrote and controlled the textbooks that would be used in the schools controlled by them. Even if a Black school did develop, that Black school had to use the same textbooks created by Whites. \ Then they had to convince the rest of the world that Black people were not even human and therefore did not deserve the same regard, compassion and empathy that any human being would feel for another. That miseducation had to be overt and subtle and it had to cover every aspect of being as it concerned Black people. That meant that as all the lies were created about Black inferiority, the same falsehoods and omissions had to be put in place to erase the story of Black excellence in civilization, in beauty, in arts, in sciences and culture.

The story of Black people had to be so denigrating, so as to turn away any mind that was seeking the truth.

It was complete and Brother Carter G. Woodson told Black People about it in his book: The Miseducation of the Negro (1926). That book was followed by others, as Europeans continued to change the face of the enslavement and oppression of Black people; so that when challenged by more civilized people in the world they would make it look like it wasn’t as bad as Black people said or that Black people volunteered for the transatlantic slave trade.

Even now, as we have taken away the blinders from so many of our eyes, when we understand the importance of self-identity to agency in the world, which requires the truthful teaching of “Our Story,” trump and his cronies are calling it “Critical Race Theory” because they know that the truth of “Our Story” is actually CRITICAL to the development of any real sense of Black identity necessary to Black liberation and certainly to the survival of our history and culture.

There is no history without the truth of Black History; just as there is no culture unless and until it is informed by Black culture.

So, these terms, “critical race theory” and “cancel culture” are meant to turn us, turn you away, away from the truth; make us reject the truth, so as not to be stigmatized as being a “Critical Race Theorist” or a “Cancel Culture Adherent.” Trump actually said that schools in America should teach the curriculum of the Confederacy.

Just imagine, a culture, a society that has truth as its foundation and values every human being where all are held accountable for words and actions past, present and future.

Of course, these facts and propositions lead to the ideal, but I believe that all human beings deserve the very best that we can create together, which is the ideal that serves everyone’s interest.

BLACK HISTORY continued they were victimized by punitive policing in the Northern cities where they sought refuge.

Community Leaders Charge:

Highmark’s “Community Commitment” is All Talk, No Action!

ur community has a serious problem. A Pittsburgh-based health care conglomerate, Highmark, is doing business in our region and already breaking its promises to the people it claims to serve in Western New York.

The recent affiliation agreement between Highmark and the former HealthNow/Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York amounts to a financial gift to Highmark of three billion dollars in assets. These dollars were accumulated by the premiums paid by Western New Yorkers to the former Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. Legally termed an affiliation, in function and practice it is an acquisition. With this new business relationship, no final decisions regarding health care services and care delivery are made locally—and it shows in Highmark’s actions.

The potential financial ramifications of this are severe, as evidenced by Highmark’s recent requested rate increases averaging 18 percent for small employer groups and individuals in 2022. The requests come on the heels of a $36 million surplus for HealthNow in 2020 and at a time when small businesses have been devastated by COVID-19. Highmark defended the requested increases, arguing that it would “only impact” 100,000 or 10 percent of its members in Western and Northeastern New York. It failed to mention that this 10 percent represents many small businesses that have been the hardest hit by the pandemic over the past year and struggling just to stay in business.

Having open, honest dialogue with the community and negotiating in good faith is important; again, Highmark misses that mark. Representatives of Highmark met with Buffalo community leaders (the signees of this letter) and Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League on May 14, 2021. The discussion centered around how Highmark could and should become a good corporate citizen of the region and the state. The community representatives expressed their extreme disappointment with Highmark’s lack of a substantive financial commitment to address health disparities in Western and Northeastern New York.

Typically, the merger of two non-profit health plans results in a significant financial contribution to benefit community health. This was not the case in the Highmark-HealthNow acquisition. Highmark’s meager $2 million for five years for these two regions is an insult and does not represent a real investment by a company with assets of $20 billion.

The Highmark administration was asked; how in good conscience could their corporation spend tens of millions of dollars for naming rights to our Buffalo Bills football stadium and not make a greater investment towards impactful health care initiatives in Western New York? This is a particularly egregious move in a region with such great need – one in seven Western New Yorkers lives below the poverty line. If improving the health of a community is truly their core business, as they advertise, such an investment should be done without question.

While no financial investment by Highmark was agreed upon by Highmark’s executive team, they committed to meeting again in person with the entire group within 10 business days. It has now been over 60 days and there has not been a meeting.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York keeps swinging and missing when it comes to being responsive to the health and well-being of this region. They appear woefully out of touch with this community and its needs. Taking millions of dollars from this region and state while adding no substantive value is shameful. Every citizen from all eight counties of Western New York should be outraged by this. We must stand up to and hold Highmark morally and financially responsible.

Tim Newkirk of GYC Ministries and supporters June 6 following the tragic shooting in the Ferry Grider Homes that ultimately ended in the death of 3-year old Shaquelle Walker Jr. The march included community anti-violence workers/leaders, concerned citizens, Buffalo Police, Mayor Byron Brown and India Walton, who won the Democratic Primary for mayor. There were 13 shootings reported over the three-day July 4th holiday weekend. The surge in gun violence locally and across the country, is troubling.
