Middle School Renamed in Honor of Dr. Alice Holloway Young Dr. Alice Holloway Young, a gifted teacher and an untiring advocate and administrator, was honored last week when the Rochester City School District (RCSD) announced that Nathaniel Rochester Middle School will be renamed in her honor. It will now be called the Dr. Alice Holloway Young School of Excellence. Recognized as an energetic champion for the Dr. Young school children of New York State who had a pronounced influence upon Rochester higher education, Dr. Young was one of the District's first African American Classroom teachers; the only African American reading specialist in the District; the first Vice Principal and Principal of elementary schools; first Title I Director (programs for educationally and economically deprived children; wrote and supervised the District's first integration programs including the Urban Suburban Program which is still in existence and other firsts as well. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bennett College and Master's and Doctoral degrees in Education Supervision and Administration from the University of Rochester. She became employed with the Rochester City School District in 1952 and pioneered as an African American educator over the next four decades. She was Monroe Community College’s Chair of Trustees for 20 years. The school, located in the city's historic Black neighborhood, was renamed after a petition with more than 100 signatures was presented to Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small. A community forum was held as a result and several speakers participated. A petition on Change.org cites the fact that Rochester was a former slave owner as the reason for why his name should be removed. Dr. Alice Holloway Young is now 97years young!

4th Annual Roc Women’s Fest Returns to Downtown Mayor Lovely A. Warren trecently announced that the Roc Women’s Fest, presented by MVP Health Care, is returning for its fourth year, 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 7 at Parcel 5 Downtown featuring free events and activities that showcase women in the Rochester community while promoting fitness, fine arts, beauty and wellness. “Rochester women have always been, and continue to be, ahead of their time,” said Mayor Warren. “Our community has benefited from the strength and intelligence of so many women past and present...“ The Roc Women's Fest is a shining example of the strong impact that women and women owned businesses have on the City of Rochester,” said MVP Health Care’s Field Marketing Coordinator, Yvonne Donnelly. n Friday, July 30 from 12 noon and lasting for approximately one hour, John H. Walker, Jr. and Darryl Boyd, collectively referred to as The Buffalo 5, will convene a “live, in-person” Prayer Vigil for Justice in front of the State Supreme Courthouse, 25 Delaware Avenue, downtown. At the most recent court appearance on Tuesday, July 20th, closing arguments were rendered by defense counsel Paul J. Cambria, Jr. of Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria LLP in Buffalo, and a representative of the Office of Erie County District Attorney John Flynn. In his presentation, Mr. Cambria stated a number of points, among them: That two particular crime scene photographs retired Judge James A.W. Marshall Taylor The First Black Cycling World Champion Marshall Taylor was born into an impoverished family on Nov. 26, 1878, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Gilbert, was the son of a slave and a Union soldier who worked for a wealthy family in Indianapolis. Taylor’s cycling career first began as just an attempt to draw in customers for the local bicycle store but one of the shop’s owners, entered him into a ten-mile bicycle race as a publicity stunt. Taylor caught everyone by surprise when he not only finished the race but won it by six seconds. And that’s when the legendary cyclist’s career really began to take off. Before his 20th birthday, Taylor had already collected seven world records and soon after, captured the coveted and barrier-breaking title of World Cycling Champion in 1899. Taylor was only the second Black athlete to ever win a world champion title. Despite his new title and fame, Taylor still faced cruel racism. Yet he dominated the cycling world for the first decade of the twentieth century. It is reported that he made $30,000 a year, which made him one of the wealthiest athletes, White or Black, of his time. He retired at the age of 32 in 1910. The last years of his life were spent selling his self-published autobiography, The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World, doorto-door in Chicago while he lived at a local YMCA. Marshall Taylor passed away in 1932 at the age of 53 in the charity ward of a Chicago hospital.

What Exactly Does the New Revised CDC Mask Mandate Say? When Covid-19 shows up after the 14th day of being fully vaccinated, the virus is said to have “broken through” the vaccine’s protection. This “breakthrough” infection happens rarely and most cases are mild or asymptomatic. Put in perspective, millions of people fully vaccinated will experience this breakthrough infection. “When people hear the numbers, they have to recognize that no vaccine is perfect, but this vaccine is still very, very, very good,” said Dr. Stephen Schrantz, Infectious Disease Specialist, Univ. Of Chicago Medicine. People with compromised immune systems are most at risk for breakthrough infection. There is a test that will detect the presence or lack of Covid antibodies. People being vaccinated might want to ask about it. If there is anything to be learned from examples of illness or death after vaccination it is that the Covid-19 vaccines do not guarantee no future infection. -New CDC GuidelinesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its guidance Tuesday on wearing masks to help protect against infection from the coronavirus as the highly transmissible delta variant fuels a surge of cases. Under the new recommendations, the federal agency is urging vaccinated Americans to wear masks indoors in certain circumstances. What exactly does the revised guidance say? Fully vaccinated or not, people who live where coronavirus transmission is classified as substantial or high should wear masks when they are indoors in public places. The agency also called for universal mask-wearing in K-12 schools, where masks should be worn by teachers, other staff members, students and visitors. The recommendation applies to everyone over the age of 2. While vaccines are authorized for adolescents, studies are ongoing in children under age 12. And according to the CDC, just 30 percent of youngsters age 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated. The CDC continues to urge everyone to get one of the three coronavirus vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States, saying the shots continue to offer a high degree of protection against becoming seriously ill. New York State Gov. Cuomo announced that the state is now reviewing these recommendations.

Legislature Chair Baskin Introduces Laws Creating New Division of Health Equity and Overhauling Erie County’s Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise Process Erie County Legislature Chair April N. M. Baskin has introduced two major pieces of her “Pathway Forward” legislative program. The new laws, the Erie County Office of Health Equity Act and the Erie County Minority and Women Enterprise Equality and Modernization Act, address longstanding problems with Erie County’s
outmoded MWBE standards and the disparity in health outcomes suffered by African Americans and other minority groups in Erie County. “Since the spring of 2020, our nation has been confronted with an economic and health crisis caused by a once in a generation pandemic and a reckoning on the societal costs of system-
ic racism,” said Legislator Baskin. “These new local laws further my ‘Equity in Erie’ campaign to provide our community's citizens with the resources they need to improve their lives and take steps to address longstanding barriers facing underserved communities.” The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared racism a serious public health threat earlier this year. Racism's impact on public health is not limited to discrimination based on the color of a person's skin, as it includes the structural barriers that have been constructed over years of segregation and inequitable investment of public dollars. “Erie County is ranked in the bottom 25% of counties in New York State for health outcomes,” noted Kenyani Davis, Chief Medical Officer of the Community Health Center of Buffalo. “Within Erie County, there is a significant disparity be-

he first annual Pilgrim Family Fest 2021 two-day event will feature vendors, live music food trucks and more!

Marsha McWilson is First Black Female Artist Inducted Into the Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame
A
fter “serving and singing” for almost 40 years, Niagara Falls’ own Marsha McWilson finally received her “icing on the cake” when she was became the first Black female artist inducted into the coveted Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame last Thursday at the Rapids Theatre. Peter Paonessa, president of the Niagara Fall Music Hall of Fame said during an earlier television interview, that the organization has been honoring musicians since 2017 and putting Marsha out there “legitimizes our mission.” “I’m celebrating two things today,” Marsha told an appreciative audience; the coveted induction into the Hall of Fame, and her 28th wedding anniversary! “I couldn’t have done it without my husband, Howard” she said before dedicating to him a soulful rendition of “At Last” by Etta James. Despite many tragedies, the amazing song stylist has persevered through it all, clinging to her faith in God. As a musical minister, Marsha is the kind of artist who walks into a room radiating light, love and laughter. You don't just hear her sing-- you experience her. She'll tell you, "I work for the Waymaker." In addition to owning and running her own business, Marsha, an accomplished vocalist, has made a name for herself performing locally, as well as nationally and internationally, singing a combination of gospel, jazz and blues. She has appeared on the Bobby Jones Gospel TV show and sang in concert with greats like David & Tamela Mann, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, Donnie McClurkin, Michael Buble and many others. Marsha has met several fellow entertainers like Tyler Perry, Bobby Brown, comedian Luenell, and has lead a Gospel choir down the runway at Fashion Week in Toronto. You might have even heard her as a radio host on Power 96.5 FM/WUFO-Buffalo. Having trained under Les Brown, Marsha is also a motivational speaker, talking to young people about making good choices in life. Her giving spirit garnered her a Humanitarian Award from the City of Niagara Falls in 2002.
Marsha has also performed on the Tom Joyner Cruise which lead to an appearance in one of Tyler Perry’s TV shows. She has been paying tribute to Etta James with standingroom-only concerts in places like Lewiston, NY, along with recording her Blue Sky Blues CD, a follow-up to her hit song on iTune entitled “Balance.” She also played the role of "Athena" in "The Odyssey" at Artpark during the summer of 2018 and sang during the Lewiston Jazz Fest. She is an evangelist at Zion Dominion Global Ministries, serving under Bishop Roderick L. Hennings. Buffalo’s Dance Community: Reimaging, Restoring, Celebrating
B
uffalo, New York has a celebrated history for its repertoire of outstanding music and musicians, visual arts and artists, and superb theater. But, it’s important not to overlook dance and dancers in the Queen City. Over the years many of you may have heard folks talking about Buffalo City Ballet, Gemini Dance Company, Empire State Ballet, Pick of the Crop Dance, Festival Ballet, American Academy of Ballet, Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, Matthew Clark’s Dance Academy, Buffalo Ballet Theater, Neglia Ballet, and Floorplay, among others. Then, beginning in the 1990s there was a major shift in the region’s dance community driven by shortfalls in funding, and large presenting venues deciding to bring in big names that could command higher ticket prices to offset the funding losses. As a result, the dance community started falling into chaos and in-fighting over funding. Only the most determined survived. In this instance, Buffalo City Ballet, aka Buffalo Inner City Ballet, shook off the dust, buckled down and continued working. As of this date, it remains the longest running ballet company in the region, operating under the direction of a classically trained African American executive director, Marvin Askew. Buffalo City Ballet can legitimately be recognized as a cornerstone of this region’s dance cathedral. The luster of other ensembles such as Empire State Ballet, Buffalo Ballet Theater, Gemini Dance, Floorplay, and Pick of the Crop has worn off and fallen into a heap of beloved memories. But, what of the people who still aspire to be dancers? For many years they floundered around in their own corners trying to make the best of things and grab onto whatever bits of funding was being distributed for dance. Recently, a handful of dancers, people who love dance, and those who support dance convened for some serious dialogue about strategizing a path out of the separatist rut they were in and chart a course for all of them to come together to revive and retool the character of dance in our community. Leading the charge on this new approach are four individuals whose passion for dance helped forge a bond and pathway that has already begun to reimagine how the dance community can interact with each other and promote the craft. The vehicle for this is M.O.V.I (Movement of Various Identities) - The brain child of acclaimed dancer/instructor/ choreographer, Robin Hibber; Nancy Hughes, professional dancer, choreographer, educator, and performer; Sophia Roberts, a dancer trained in Russian classical ballet, who also studied with Garth Fagan, is a liturgical dancer, and has a list of innovative performances throughout the region; and Fenna Mandolang who is a visual artist, has a passion for dance, and experiments with body movement through Contact Improv work. MOVI examines diverse styles and forms of African dance and presents the many ways that traditional African dance influenced the interpretative movements in other cultures across the globe as well as Euro-western dance as the result of explorations and co-mingling of cultures. MMOST - Magical Women of Color Culture Series - showcased specialty dances associated with specific cultures through a series of dance classes. Beatriz Flores of El Beaty, Natasha Perkins, Naila Ansari, Kesi Akono, Gaitrie Subryan, Meghan A. Rakeepile, Elyssa Bourke, and Abhishek Sharma have all taught classes focused on techniques ranging from hip hop and Afro World Beat to Cunningham, Dunham, and Salsa. The series is continuing with a new set of opportunities: MOST (Men of Swagger and Style Technique) taking place at the Clark Dance Academy, 255 Great Arrow Parkway, Suite 118, Buffalo, NY 14207. n Saturday July 31 between 1p.m. – 8p.m. ,the Historic Colored Musicians Club is proud to present the return of the annual Queen City Jazz Festival in downtown Buffalo for its 17th year anniversary and a day filled with jazz and jazz lover fellowship right outside of the club at 145 Broadway at Michigan ave. The roster features some of WNY’s world class talent to grace the stage presented by the CMC, who’s “vision is to be the global icon in the presentation of African-American music where the next generation of legends are made,” says artistic director Walter Kemp . The festival will boast the richness and diversity of Buffalo’s musical talent base showcased during 7 performances at this year’s event. Among the great lineup of performers gracing the stage, festival goers will get to hear the talents of award winning pianist George Caldwell featuring Bobby Militello . One of the Pre-eminent swing players of modern jazz, Caldwell is a fully tenured jazz piano legend who has served with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, as a sideman extraordinaire, and as leader of his own ensembles. Also in the lineup is the beautifully unique vocal artist Curtis Lovell. Lovell who has in recent years released some of the most original and unique music projects, is the talented daughter of the late Ujima theater founder Lorna Hill. She embodies a captivating stage presence and has amazing sonic range with hints of her influences like Jill Scott, Nina Simone and Nat King Cole among others. Saxophonist / percussionist Nelson Rivera has been a valued member of the Buffalo music scene for nearly two decades. He performs with a wide variety of projects across a range of styles including Wendell Rivera's Latin Jazz Ensemble, Buffalo Jazz Octet and many others. Drummer Daniel "DP" Powell will perform with Trinity Band a soulful favorite from the area. Powell has a host of recording and performing collaborations from his first gig with Chaka Khan to Prince, Freddie Jackson, Patti Labelle, Billy Cobham and Phyllis Hyman. LEGISLATOR BASKIN INTRODUCES NEW LAWS continued
strengthen minority and women owned business hiring by updating the goals to address current disparities. It also introduces a workforce hiring component to ensure workers on Erie County projects reflect the diversity of our population and implements real accountability for county contractors. Current local law requires that Erie County maintain a goal of awarding 15% of the total cost of contracts for professional, technical, or other consultant services to minority business enterprises and 5% goal for women business enterprises. The new MWBE legislation includes a new collective goal of 30% for MWBE contracts, which shall consist of 20% for MBE firms and 10% for WBE firms. Contractors awarded a contract by the county in a value of $100,000 for professional, technical, consultant or insurance services shall take action to create economic opportunity by utilizing MBEs and WBEs in all contracts with the County. The law also requires county departments to prepare and implement an annual written MWBE Utilization Plan for the utilization goals for minority and women owned business. The current Minority and Women Utilization Advisory Board ("MWUAB"), whose mission is to evaluate and review the adequacy of the County's efforts on behalf of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises will be tasked with reviewing program administration and implementation of this law including handling of any administrative appeals for noncompliance sanctions and shall submit an annual report to the Erie County Legislature.

What Happen To The City Of Good Neighbors? Dear Editor: The City of Buffalo, New York has been coined the City of Good Neighbors. For some good reasons. Back in the day Buffalo had a thriving city and the morals of the residents were sky high. Within the last seven months or so the city has erupted in gun violence. How is it that a 3year old boy loses his life while at a family cookout? Or that Buffalo is now on the verge of shattering its homicide record from 1994? What happened to the City of Good Neighbors? There are many contributing factors to violence and or gun violence. Poverty, lack of education, lack of opportunities, lack of self respect for one self or other's. That's just to name a few. How can someone be a good neighbor when they don't respect themselves? I believe a key issue with our youth and young adults today is that they have a lack of respect for themselves. Quite frankly, if they don't respect themselves, how can we expect them to respect others; their neighbors? As a youth I can remember the emphasis put on respecting others. However I cannot recall much about respecting myself. So I conjured up my own perspective. There's was a good chance things would go awry. I eventually indulged in behaviors that led to my incarceration in which I have served now twenty years. Most young adults if asked today would define respect as something that has to be earned. In my 16 plus years of experience in working in youth mentorship programs; A Look For Alternative (ALFA), Community Awareness Program ( CAP) ,Youth Assistance Program (YAP), that is the common response. Even in the Bible it says; Give and it shall be given to you (Luke 6:38). If we can begin to help our youth transform how they view respect it can make a huge impact in their lives. As they begin to respect themselves and others, undoubtedly their actions will begin to change as well. I believe in my city, the "City of Good Neighbors." However when anyone loses their life from gun violence, it is not just the Eastside of Buffalo's problem. It is the City of Buffalo's problem. India Walton Is A Victim:
Flawed And Biased Journalism: Who's Watching the Watchdog?

he Buffalo News displayed its flawed and biased journalism – and willingness to engage in junkyard-dog politics – with its July 19 through 21 articles aimed at undermining India Walton’s mayoral campaign. Under the ironic caption, “Buffalo News Watchdog,” the newspaper splashed across the top of its June 20, 2021 front page the following headline: Drug complaint probed at Walton’s apartment in ’18 – Man who stayed at house did time for selling coke.“ and her sons celebrate her mayoral priNot only does the ambiguous subheading imply India mary victory on election night.Street Legacy a non-existent link between the 2018 “drug com- Photos by Darvin Adams plaint” at the mayoral candidate’s former apartment and the cocaine conviction, it is not until the third paragraph of the article that readers are told that the police found no evidence of drugs being sold at Walton’s house, and that neither India Walton, nor the “man who stayed at [her] house,” were charged with any crime. [The on-line version of the article, was published July 19, 2021 under the tamer headline, “Mayoral candidate Walton left rental in ’18 after landlord accused friend of dealing drugs from house.“] This sensationalized “story” was based on the allegations of a landlord “who did not want his name used,” who admits that he never saw drugs or drug activities at the house, and who based his concerns on the word of an unnamed “lady next door.” Most significantly, as noted above, the police reports obtained by the Buffalo News “do not indicate that police had proof of drugs being sold in Walton’s home.” In a nutshell, proof of any wrongdoing by India Walton is totally absent. And, the public has no way of knowing what if any connections may exist between the anonymous landlord and Byron Brown. In such a situation, an unbiased and responsible news organization would not have published the original article. But, irresponsible accusations and innuendo have a life of their own. Equivocation by Erie Democratic Party Chairman Jeremy J. Zellner, regarding the Democratic party’s continued support of Ms. Walton’s campaign, provided the Buffalo News the opportunity to print a second story on July 21, 2021. This time the headline adorned the top of its local section: “Dems mull questions over Walton friend – Zellner to weigh input on party’s ‘concerns’.” The article that followed began in an intentionally eye-catching fashion: “An allegation of drug activity at a house rented by Democratic mayoral nominee India B. Walton three years ago cast new perspective on her campaign…” Zellner, as Democratic Party chairman, should have expressed outrage at the Buffalo News for its irresponsible front page accusations against the winner of the Democratic primary for the Mayor of Buffalo. City of Buffalo residents deserve stronger and more forceful leadership than what the chairman exhibited this past week. The biggest problem we have in Western New York, however - if we wish to see a fair and honest mayoral campaign - is the reality that our region’s self-appointed “watchdog” needs a watchdog of its own.
Recalling the Hatred for Black Women in Power: From Michelle Obama, to Local Female Elected Officials, to India Walton

ho among us can ever forget the venom and hate, that one of Buffalo's most prominent developers, expressed publicly against then first Lady, Michelle Obama? Who remembers cringing with shock and outrage, when this so called civilized man uttered the vile , racist statement, proclaiming that Mrs. Obama should be exiled, with a gorilla named Zeus, to a cave in the backwoods of Africa? It was not just Michelle Obama, this 'gentleman' verbally attacked and berated. From former Buffalo Public Superintendent, Dr. Pamela A. Brown, whom this racist called incompetent, to the Black women on the board of education, who he called the Black Sistahood, this receiver of corporate welfare has made his disdain of Black woman known far and wide. This rich developer, who grew up poor, is now one of the biggest landlords in the City of Buffalo. At one time, in the 1990s, he owned half of the real estate in the city. During this time frame, Buffalo elected four Black women to the Buffalo Common Council. They were Beverly Gray- At Large, Barbara Miller Williams- Ellicott District, Karen Ellington-Fillmore District and Betty Jean Grant- University District. This man, who I shall call Mr. Angry White Man, attacked us almost on a daily basis. I must say that I earned a portion of his wrath when I found out that he was un-
derpaying his Garbage User Fees because the city of Buffalo was charging him a price based on address, not by the number of units or apartments located at that said address. So he went from paying $129 a year for an apartment building to paying over $34,000.00 for each of his multi unit buildings. I wrote the City of Buffalo Common Council resolution to charge the user fee by units and not by address and he never forgave me for that. So now, here we are, with India Walton, the first woman to win a Primary for Mayor of Buffalo! I can only imagine how livid Mr. Angry White Man is and I will bet the house that it was her color more than her gender that caused him to say, " I will destroy her politically," when Ms. Walton was declared the winner of the June 22nd Democratic Primary. He was so beside himself, that he insisted that the current mayor conduct a Write In campaign for the November General Election. And he threatened that if Byron Brown did not run on the Write In, he would do it himself! And all this happened because somebody let a diminutive, not quite 5 feet tall, hard working, powerhouse of a strong Black woman out work and out campaign him. My advice to this man's threat would be:"Please go ahead, Mr. Angry White Man. It has been almost 20 years since another strong, Black woman caused some of your ill gotten windfall, from the city's garbage user fee accounting error, to be diverted from your deep pockets brimming with CDBG and poor people's monies!

Bounce! Roll! Skate! Roller Rink at Canalside Opening Soon Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) and Buffalo Waterfront Management Group (BWMG) has announced that the canals at Canalside will be converted into a giant roller rink that will open on August 20 and roll through the fall season to October 31. At more than 30,000 square feet, the Roller Rink at Canalside, in partnership with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, will be the largest out-
door roller-skating rink in New York State. The seasonal attraction, which will host community and school groups, themed skate nights and be free before 5 p.m. on Fridays, will add to the diverse offering of low-cost, family-friendly programming available at Canalside. Admission is $6 per adult and $2 for children age 13 and younger. Roller skate rentals will be $4.
