Local Pastor Prayerful That SLA Will Not Grant Liquor License to New Owner of GiGi’s Building
D
istance matters. For the past few decades the Cold Spring COGIC Jesus at 107 Verplank and Gigi’s Restaurant were good neighbors. Then two years ago the iconic Jefferson/Ferry business closed due to a devestating fire. The church, along with the community, was prayerful GiGi’s would one day reopen. Their prayers were answered. It was announced with much fanfare earlier this year that the restaurant would be back in business once again – but in a different location inside the Rev. Wallace new Northland Corridor. It was also revealed that the building that once housed GiGi’s had been sold. The news that followed was even more unsettling. The buildings’ new owner, it was learned, was planning to open a liquor store in that location. Today prayer has been coupled with protest and an outraged community has come together to vehemently push back against such an opening. “We are definitely not in favor of it,” Pastor Joseph Wallace of Cold Spring COGIC Jesus told The Challenger recently. "A nice restaurant” or another family oriented establishment would be a much better choice, one the public would “embrace” he added. His church would particularly appreciate it given the fact that they are located less than 200 feet from the proposed new liquor store. “It will be right next door!” Rev. Wallace pointed out. “So much (negativity) comes with it,” he continued, adding that the concern is that it would downgrade the community. “We don’t want or need liquor stores on every corner.” Rev. Wallace was referring to the fact that there are already at least three other liquor stores within two miles of the one the new Gigi’s building owner is proposing. The community he suggested, is looking to go forward, not backwards. Two weeks ago, residents, members of the clergy, political representatives and even children as young as 10 year old, Jaylah Bell – made their passions clear to Buffalo native state Liquor Authority Deputy Commissioner David L. Edmunds. The meeting, called by Masten District Councilmember Ulysees Wingo, was supposed to be an informational session about how the Authority processes and evaluates applications. However the will of the people prevailed, as speaker after speaker voiced their opposition to plans to open a liquor store in that location. Mr. Edmunds pointed out that given the extent of public agitation, he felt it appropriate to hear the community’s concerns and to give effective direction to them. He said he would also be preparing a summary memo of the meeting to present to the state board as part of their decision making material. He said it typically takes 45 to 60 days to complete the license application process.

Dennmark Vesey
Denmark Vesey, Forgotten Hero In 1822, in Charleston, South Carolina, Dennmark Vesey masterminded what would have been the largest slave revolt in American history. But an informer revealed the plans at the last minute and the revolt was nipped in the bud. Fearing future attempts at insurrection, Charleston slaveowners had Vesey and many of his co-conspirators put to death. Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a committed abolitionist, in his June 1861 Atlantic Magaine account described Vesey's plan (which was developed in collaboration with an enslaved African named Peter Poyas) as "the most elaborate insurrectionary project ever formed by American slaves.... In boldness of conception and thoroughness of organization there has been nothing to compare it with." They plotted to kill the city’s White inhabitants, light its buildings on fire and escape to Haiti by boat. Vesey had even reached out to Haiti’s leaders, hoping to gain military aid. Vesey was no longer senslaved at the time he planned the revolt—he had purchased his own freedom several years before, so his motives were not self-serving—and Charleston's official report of the episode, as quoted by Higginson, made note of Vesey's pride and the strength of his convictions. Rev. Gillison Quoted in New York Times Article About Newly Empowered Black Voters A June 14th New York Times article titled “Newly Empowered, Black Voters Ask More of Candidates,” quoted the Rev. Dr. William Gillson, (pictured right) the pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Buffalo, who said some candidates lack consistent engagement with the Black electorate. The article was focused on the 2018 gubernatorial race in New York State. A recently released Siena College poll showed the among African Americans likely to vote in November, the incumbent Governor Andrew M. Cuomo leads his opponent Cynthia Nixon, 74 percent to 17 percent. However both candidates, the Times reports, have been accused of “pandering” to the Black community
“When you’re dealing with any community, and you have no relationship with the community, then you’re subject to say things that are offensive to that community,” said Rev. Gillison (pictured right). “A lot of Black voters recognize their worth right now,” said Cristina Greer, a Ford-
ham university professor who is African American and studies the role of race in politics. “We will not just be given whatever an elected official thinks is best for us.”

The Month of June Is Such A Special Time The month of June is such a special time with so many celebrations: graduations, weddings, family reunions, proms, my birthday (June 1st), Juneteenth, and the list goes on. PRP2 has so much to celebrate. Our speakers this month will highlight good news. The hope that I have written about for the last two months has come to fruition and is still growing as hard work pays off, minds are opened, policies change, and struggle continues without ceasing. PRP2 had its inception in the month of June 2005; BaBa Eng was released from prison in the month of June 2013; and Gerrod Bennett’s release from prison came in June of 2016. BaBa and Gerrod will be two of our four main speakers. Many have heard BaBa Eng speak about the importance and value of Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices. Many have been trained by him in hubs throughout this city. Donna Habeeb, a PRP2 member and good friend, will talk about the ways in which her family has been positively impacted by a Restorative Conference which BaBa facilitated several months ago. Gerrod Bennett will talk about his reentry experience, recounting the ups and downs which have ultimately led to his college graduation, after 22 years in State Prison and only two years on the outside. Reentry is very difficult, given the pressures that one faces adjusting to the world outside. Gerrod is a successful reentry candidate who beat the odds. Sheila Hayes is someone who can speak effectively about the ways in which an incarcerated loved one’s imprisonment can impact the entire family. Supporting Robert “Seth” Hayes has been extremely challenging. According to the “Jercho Movement” website, “Seth first came up for parole in 1998, but prison officials have refused to release him, and are effectively punishing him for having been a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army.” Still he has remained true to his ideals even after 45 years behind bars, medical maltreatment, and ten parole denials. Recent news has announced that his release from prison has been approved. BaBa Eng is our fourth designated speaker. He will talk about the importance of pa-
rolees now having the right to vote. On April 18, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order granting the right to vote to thousands of New York State citizens, no Karima longer in AMIN prison, who are now on parole. BaBa will talk about the value of this decree and how it effects all of us. I will talk about my visit to Auburn State Prison where I have been invited to speak at the prison’s Juneteenth Celebration. I have not had the opportunity to speak at a prison in quite some time so I am excited and grateful for this opportunity. You’re invited to join us for the celebration at our next meeting, Monday, June 25, 2018 at the Rafi Greene Center located at 1423 Fillmore @ Glenwood in Buffalo, from 7:00- to -9:00pm. For more information, contact Karima Amin, 716-834-8438, karima@prp2.org; or BaBa Eng, 716-491-5319, g.babaeng@ yahoo.com.

JUNETEENTH!
Challenger Community News • t hec hallengernews.com •June 20 , 2018
H
ats off the 2018 Juneteenth Festival committee and to this beautiful community who turned out in record numbers to enjoy two well planned sun splashed days of culture! Leading in with seven days of pre-festival events (Sankofa Days), Saturday’s parade (although a bit long) was the highlight. The remainder of the festival featured A variety of vendors, food, entertainment and reunion! Former County Legislator Queen Betty Jean Grant, this year’s Grand Marshall, was decked out in an elaborate one-of-a-kind Panther-inspired African gown created by Doti & Girls. The photos above are just a tiny sample of the beauty that was on display Saturday. Congratulations to all! See you next year!

Fulfilling a Responsibility to Give Back By Brent Rollins olunteering is a great way to serve your community when you are doing something that you are passionate about. I've been a long time community volunteer, but a recent opportunity further opened my eyes to the importance of community service. I discovered Read to Succeed Buffalo's (RTSB) Experience Corps tutoring program through an advertisement. The program connects retirees, such as myself, with Public School students in grades K-3 who struggle with reading. Since my nine grandchildren live out of town, I decided to share the lessons of my life's experience by volunteering. Older generations have a responsibility to give back and prepare younger generations for what is to come. At my first meeting, I met with RTSB staff and was impressed with their passion and understanding of how to best help children learn to read. It's no secret that literacy rates in any city can be improved. RTSB broke down the local statistics thoroughly and had a plan to tackle this issue, which really appealed to me. When I walked out of my first meeting, I knew this organization was one of great need, and one I knew I wanted to be a part of. As I wrap up my second year as an Experience Corps tutor, I can't help but reflect on how my perception of this program has changed over time. I knew I would spend time reading with children, but I didn't fully appreciate the challenge literacy is for some young children from poverty stricken communities. Children who struggle with reading are often frustrated in the classroom and that frustration can lead to perceived or real behavior problems. This is the first step in the "school-to-prison-pipeline" that primarily plagues low-income communities of color. The ACLU describes that school-to-prison-pipeline as "a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems." Many of these children have histories of poverty or ineffective mentoring and would benefit from additional educational and tutor/mentor services like RTSB's Experience Corps Small Group Tutoring program. These children are often reacting to situations beyond their control and they need support, encouragement, and positive role models. We need to give our children tools for success and reward their accomplishments, rather than criminalize their shortcomings. Children can benefit from role models from all walks of life, but it is especially effective when they have role models who can relate to their life's challenges. Every tutor in the RTSB Experience Corps is trying to make a positive difference but there is an unmet need for male tutors, particularly men of color. My brothers in the struggle; rise up, and man up and volunteer. These are our babies, our responsibilities. Their time is now! The little things like seeing the children's excitement when they answer a question correctly or get through reading a lengthy passage is all the motivation I need to keep coming back. There's no better feeling than working with the children and seeing the light go on when they understand something they've been struggling with. These children fulfill something inside of me that I knew needed fulfillment. Childhood literacy is not an easy issue to tackle, but if our work can help at least one child get on the right track, then it's worth it. As an Experience Corps volunteer, we aren't just teaching these children how to read; we're helping them understand life, making them better communicators, and instilling a confidence in them that, along with a positive attitude, can allow them to accomplish anything. My story is just one among countless others. One person can't do it alone, but if we all come together to advance our children, we have the opportunity to help make our young people in Buffalo the best anywhere.

Obit Disrespects Legacy of Judge Barbara Sims
T
he late Judge Barbara Merriweather Sims will always be revered as an icon in the Black community. When she passed on June 10, she left a legacy of struggle on behalf of the civil and human rights of her people. She was a brilliant woman who made history in the local legal field. She was unafraid to fight racism and discrimination wherever it manifested. And no misguided disrespectful “obituary’ in the White press, can change that. The write-up in the wake of her death in no way represented this great woman. It was interspersed with negativity in a slick attempt to try to discredit Judge Sims rather than focus primarily on her trailblazing efforts and accomplishments. It was despicable and cowardly, as Judge Sims is no longer here to defend herself. Even when the article makes a positive historic point , i.e. that Barbara Sims became the first African American woman to serve as an assistant district attorney in Erie County, it was followed up with a somewhat detailed account of why she was reportedly “dismissed.” In 1968 the Challenger ran a front page story with blaring headlines in support of Mrs. Sims as she fought the powers that be. The “clash” between her and then DA Michael F. Dillon over the prosecution of a 22 year old woman charged with assisting a notorious escaped murderer, had everything to do with Mrs. Sims standing up and refusing to be used in what she felt was the unjust prosecution of another Black person. Barbara Sims had the backbone to stand up in a position, that no other Black person ever had, and refuse to be a part of an injustice. She was a woman of principal above all else. Even near the end of the article a petty, noncriminal incident that was dismissed, was mentioned in an attempt to cast the final disparaging blow on her character. We categorically condemn the disrespect shown not only to this great woman - our beloved Barbara Sims - but to her family and all those who knew, loved and respected her. -A.B. (The following obituary, excerpted in part from the June 16-22 Criterion, paints a true picture of Judge Sims.)

We Believe in (Leecia) Eve!
Dear Editor, It is a shame when qualified Black, local community political candidates cannot get support from other Black elected officials who we helped to put in office. For example, the candidacy of Leecia Eve for New York State Attorney General. Like it was reported in your newspaper, local hometown candidate Eve was passed over for the endorsement by NYS Democratic Chairman Byron Brown and NYS Assemlywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes. They even went so far as to disrespect our community last Saturday by bringing in an outsider to Buffalo and endorsing her in the middle of our Juneteenth celebration! If Mayor Brown wanted to endorse an Andrew Cuomo outsider for Attorney General, City Hall would have been the perfect place, as the governor has already bought the people who govern the place! Leecia. Roberta Eve and the Eve family, especially Deputy Speaker Arthur O. Eve, has done too much for our community and the least of us educationally and other in other ways, to have to be humiliated in such a public way on such a historic day. -Sandra Jones-Davis
dear editor
In Defense of the Honorable Judge Barabara Sims Dear Editor: The reason the Black ommunity must have its own newspaper is because of slandering negative coverage of our community's accomplishments by the Buffalo News ("Noose" as we call it!) The article (obituary) on the Honorable Judge Barbara Sims has more focus on the negative, even ending with a cup of water thrown out a window; rather than focusing on the trailblazer first Black district attorney, first Black women city court judge, daughter of the founder of the Criterion newspaper and fierce advocate for women and civil rights! From start to finish, this article is biased! It's focus is to discredit a great woman's career. The Honorable Barbara Sims will alway be a champion to Black youth! Shame on you Buffalo News! - Elder Paulette Woods, Board Of Education Member

BLACK HISTORY continued whilst walking through the streets in company with another," the report stated, "he was not idle; for if his companion bowed to a white person, he would rebuke him, and observe that all men were born equal." At the trial, the sentencing judge was plainly astonished in the face of the stoic heroism displayed by Vesey. "It is difficult to imagine, what infatuation could have prompted you to attempt an enterprise so wild and visionary," said the judge." You were a free man, wealthy, and enjoyed every comfort...You had, therefore, much to risk and little to gain." (Denmark Vesey was a cofounder of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine people were shot dead in 2015 by a White Supremacist).
