New York, will observe a momentous occasion as a professional organization at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 31 at Monroe's, 3001 Monroe Ave. "We are so excited about celebrating our 15th anniversary as a chapter and look forward to continuing our advocacy for fellow journalists and educating the public about media issues of the day,'' said RABJ President Richard McCollough, who is also a local meteorologist. Johann Calhoun, a news and special projects editor for The Philadelphia Tribute in Pennsylvania and Region 1 director for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is the special guest for the event and has been invited to deliver remarks at the luncheon. Founded on April 17, 2004 by reporters, photographers, copy editors, along Johann Calhoun with those in allied professions such as in public relations, RABJ' has had as one of its core goals to bring diversity into the newsrooms of local print, broadcast and online media outlets. Today's RABJ members stand on the shoulders of many notable African Americans who have contributed much to Rochester such as publisher Frederick Douglass (The North Star); Howard W. Coles, Rochester's first Black radio announcer (WSAY); Earl Caldwell, whose assignments as a reporter included the civil rights beat (Democrat and Chronicle); Andrew Langston, founder city's first Black radio station (WDKX); and Janet Lomax, the first Black woman to anchor a main, weeknight newscast in Rochester (WHEC). A few of the highlights, since RABJ's inception in 2004, are as follows: *The Wyoma Best Scholarship Fund for Future Journalists: providing financial assistance to graduating high school seniors interested in communications and media studies. *Black Cinema Series: presented in partnership with The Little Theatre, the series -- now in its third year -- celebrates both documentary and narrative expressions in black cinema with a curated film choice each month. *Celebrating 200th Anniversary of Frederick Douglass *RABJ Legends: An on-going documentary project about Rochester's rich African-American heritage featuring video interviews with Rochester's most influential figures who blasted through barriers in such fields as politics, education, and science. *Mentoring: Organizes workshops for high school students considering being journalists. *Media Watchdog: Advocates for African Americans to be depicted in a fair and balanced way, points out bias and insensitivity while helping to advance solutions. *We welcome all to help us reflect on these accomplishments as we look to our future. University Of Rochester Student Behind White Nationalist Fliers In Brighton A 23-year-old University of Rochester senior, Christopher N. Hodgman, 23, of Bethesda, Maryland, has been identified by the Brighton Police Department as the suspect behind several White supremacist fliers and stickers that were posted around Brighton last fall. The violation carries a $250 fine and 15 days in jail per count. Hodgman is due in Brighton Town Court on March 27.

Buffalo Bills front office made a wise decision in not signing free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown. Bills QB Josh Allen needs young receivers to grow with him and most importantly fix the offensive line. There are plenty of free agent veteran linemen that can improve our right side of the offensive line. I would draft at the number 9 position in the first round Jawaan Taylor from University of Florida. Jawaan has quick feet, is strong and can be the left tackle the Bills have been looking for since Cordy Glemm was traded. I would move Dion Dawkins back to his natural position of guard which would make a massive left side featuring Jawaan Taylor and Dion Dawkins. Dawkins is quick enough to be a pulling guard which could mean the power sweep coming back into play in the 2019 season. The Bills can pick up a center, guard, and tackle for the right side in free agency without spending a lot of money. This would be the best way for the team to go. It’s time for Beane and McDermott to put up or shut up about The Process and build this team back up to respectability. We will see starting on Wednesday. Let the fun begin! HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Congratulations to Webster Thomas High School's Monique Hardy on winning the girls weight throw with a distance of 62-8.50 during the Section V Winter Track & Field Meet of Champions. Monique also won in New York City at the New Balance Track & Field event over this past weekend. Bishop Kearney’s Saniaa Wilson and Lytoya Baker blew out Section VI Frontier over the weekend by more than 30 points. This high scoring team continues to whip teams in this historic season for them. The starting five could all be playing for Division I College Basketball teams. They will be playing in the State’s final four this coming weekend.

AREA BRIEFS Tribute to Hon. Shirley Chisholm “Unbought and Unbossed,” a tribute to Shirley Chisholm, will be held on Saturday, March 16 from 3-5 p.m. at the Merriweather Library. The Hon. Ms. Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and the first woman to run for President of the United States. The event, hosted by Eva Doyle, will feature a movie, a panel discussion featuring minority female elected legislators and judges; artistic expression highlighting local African American female pioneers Beverly Gray, Minnie Gillette, Cora P. Names Released in North Buffalo Triple Shooting of Teens Two 16-year olds- Clifton Eutsey and Marquese Richardson were wounded and one 18-year old, Deron Allen, was killed in a triple shooting last Friday on St. Lawrence Avenue in North Buffalo. Since the tragic shooting Richardson has been released from ECMC. Eutsey remains hospitalized and his condition has improved. The shooting remains under investigation. Newly Formed Group to Host Women’s History Month Program The newly formed Community Building Tea (CBT) will host “Finding Our Voices: Honest Talk, Deep Listening, Real Healing,” a Women's History Month program that gives voice and advocacy to a range of gender identities. Participants will learn skills that promote the establishment of relationships and social change. This program is free, open to all, and includes light refreshments. The event will take place Wednesday, March 27 from 6-8 p.m. in the McKinley High School lobby, 1500 Elmwood Avenue. Halimah Madyun Joins Brown Administration Halimah Madyun will serve as the City of Buffalo’s Director of Administration and Finance under Mayor Byron Brown, effective March 18. Halimah was formerly employed at M&T Bank where she held a series of positions. Beginning her career in October of 2001, Halimah worked in credit operations and product management within the Commercial Bank. She joined Finance in 2015 where she was a Vice President and Financial Analysis Manager in the Capital Data Reporting group. While employed at M&T, Halimah has earned both her Bachelor of Science in Business Management and her Master of Business Administration from D’Youville College. Halimah participated in the first ever Diversity Development Program at M&T. She serves as the President of M&T Bank’s Women’s Interest Network (WIN) National Employee Resource Group, and President of the Western New York chapter of WIN as well. She facilitated the establishment of a new Finance Mentor Program. She is an active participant in the Finance Division’s sub-committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging and the Diversity Circle sponsored by M&T Bank. Baksin Resolution to Further Assist Prisoners Wins Approval A resolution sponsored by Erie County Legislature Majority Leader April N. M. Baskin calling upon the Erie County Department of Social Services to pro-actively fight recidivism, was passed unanimously at a recent session. “Under the current system, individuals released from incarceration must apply and then wait for up to 45 days to receive financial assistance,” noted Baskin, who represents the 2nd Legislative District. “And because they are initially directed into emergency housing, taxpayers wind up paying more. If we are serious about preventing recidivism and its negative impact on our community, we should enable prisoners to be proactive about obtaining housing and other needed support services prior to being released from incarceration so they are positioned to re-enter society and find gainful employment.” Baskin’s resolution asks the County Department of Social services to accept applications for future assistance from incarcerated individuals, unlike current practice. Legislator Baskin “Whatever we can do to positively and fully integrate formerly incarcerated residents back into our community is major step in empowering them to becoming productive members of society,” said Baskin. “Many are indigent and have an immediate need for food, housing and transportation. This is an opportunity to mainstream offenders by ensuring a support system that will not only discourage recidivism, but save taxpayer dollars, ultimately benefitting everyone.”

Jumaane D. Williams Elected New York City Public Advocate New York - Jumaane D. Williams, Democratic councilman from Brooklyn, has been elected New York City public advocate, notching a victory over 16 other candidates in a free-for-all race that could give him a platform to seek higher office. He had the support of voters who saw his history as an activist as evidence that he would be an unapologetic antagonist to Mayor Bill de Blasio when needed. Williams is a proud “agitator” who has been arrested too many times to count, at black-lives-matters protests, Occupy Wall Street and the Trayvon Martin protests and the ‘he’s not my president’ protests on inauguration day. He was an outspoken critic of “stop-and-frisk”, the NYPD tool used for years

to reduce crime in the city. The job that comes with a $165,000 salary, a $3 million budget. The public advocate functions as city ombudsman and can investigate citizen complaints about agencies and services but has no subpoena power. The 2019 New York City Public Advocate special election was held on February 26, 2019 to fill part of the unexpired term of Letitia James's vacated seat as New York City Public Advocate after James resigned to take office as Attorney General of New York. Williams will have to compete again in a June primary and a November general election if he wants to serve as public advocate past the end of 2019.

Harriet Tubman: "The Moses of Her People" •Harriett Tubman’s birth name was Araminta Harriet Ross. In 1844 she married a free Black man named John Tubman, and changed her name to Harriet. •She was born around 1822, in Dorchester County, Maryland, a town 100 miles from Baltimore. •Tubman escaped from enslavement via the Underground Railroad and traveled 90 miles to Philadelphia. “When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven,” she is quoted as saying. •She is known as the ‘Moses of Her People.’” •She rescued her 70 year old parents from enslavement. •Over an 11 year period, Tubman freed 0ver 80 enslaved Africans from Maryland into Canada. •She is recognized as the first Black woman to serve in the US military. In the Civil War, Tubman served as a soldier, spy, and nurse. She was laid to rest with military honors. •In June of 1863, she and Colonel James Montgomery led an attack on plantations along the Combahee River in South Carolina, rescuing more than 700 slaves. •New York Senator William Seward sold his Auburn, New York house to Harriet Tubman in 1859, and it became her base of operations where she established the Tubman Home for the Aged in 1908. • She died March 10, 1913, in Auburn, N.Y.

The New Mayor of Chicago Will Be a Black Woman for the First Time

hicago will have a choice between two African American women – Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle - one of whom will become the first Black female mayor of the nation’s third-largest city in the April 2 runoff election. Former federal prosecutor Lightfoot, If elected, she would also be the city’s first openly gay mayor. Cook County Board President Preckwinkle, has strong backing from organized labor. The two women advanced to the April 2 runoff on February 26 after being the top two vote-getters among 14 candidates, the largest mayoral candidate field in the city’s history. The 2019 race is Chicago's fourth open mayoral race in 100 years.

Cotton Picking Insult

Pam Northam, wife of embattled Virginia governor and blackface enthusiast Ralph Northam and former middle school teacher, has come under fire for her tour of the governor’s residence recently. A Virginia state employee complained that Northam gave her daughter and another Black student balls of cotton before asking them to imagine being enslaved. She has since apologized.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight Crashes, All 157 On Board Killed At least 150 people were killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed early Sunday. It was the second such disaster involving a brand-new Boeing 737 Max 8 in months. Two American carriers that use the planes heavily — Southwest Airlines and American Airlines — have said they would continue to fly the aircraft. Southwest has The most 737 Max8 planes in its fleet – 34, followed by Air Canada and American airlines with 24 each. Air Canada is also continuing to fly the aircraft. Meanwhile, China, Indonesia and Great Britian ordered their airlines to ground all of the Max 8 jets they operate. Singapore and Australia followed suit, banning the Max 8s from their airspace. More than 20 airline companies have taken the aircraft out of service as the American aerospace giant scrambled to deal with the fallout from a deadly plane crash in Ethiopia.

Legislation Reintroduced to Commission Statue Honoring U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm

WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (DCA) recently reintroduced a bill directing Congress to commission a statue of former U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm to be displayed in the United States Capitol. Currently, there are four statues and busts in the United State Capitol representing African-Americans, including Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sojourner Truth. Companion legislation was also introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY). “For the first time in history, there are more than 20 Black women serving in the United State Congress—and we all stand on the shoulders of Shirley Chisholm,” said Senator Harris. “Shirley’s legacy inspires us to continue our fight to give a voice to the voiceless and pursue justice and equality for every American. Her legacy deserves to stand tall in the United States Capitol.”

Intermittent Fasting: Our Greatest Weapon “Anything you can’t fast from you are a slave to”

e’ve survived Maafa or the Black/African Holocaust, but Heart disease and Type 2 diabetes appears to be something we cannot conquer. We’ve withstood the Middle Passage, the dehumanization and subjugation of chattel slavery, the extreme injustice of Jim Crow, and the terror inflicted on us by the worst terrorist group known to man, the Ku Klux Klan. But we are currently in the seemingly inescapable throes of chronic disease and the US Health Care System. While many of us were able to escape life on the plantation, we can’t seem to escape the vicious cycle of doctor visits, trips to the pharmacy and a deteriorating quality of life, which ultimately and sadly leads to premature death. Buffalo, N.Y. is the 5th most racially segregated, and 3rd poorest city in America. African Americans who reside in zip codes 14204, 14206, 14211, 14212 and 14215 have many of the worst health outcomes in Erie Kathleen N. County. The rate of premature death of African Americans living in these zip codes is 300% higher than Whites who live outside of these areas (premature death is any death that occurs before age 75). According to The Erie RICHARDSON County New York Health Assessment for 2017-2019, and the 2015 Task Force on Health Care Disparity in the African American community, heart disease is the number one cause of death in NYS and Erie County. But the rates of Blacks dying from heart disease is 40% higher than Whites. These reports also reveal that African Americans are twice as likely to have diabetes as Whites. Blacks have double the hospital admission rates than whites for diabetes-related conditions. We have absurdly looked to the US Health Care System for a remedy, a cure even. But as we still await our 40 acres and a mule 165 years later, we are much better off to look within ourselves for healing. I shared these statistics not to be negative and dismal, but to put things in its proper perspective. Our health needs to be our greatest priority. It’s been said, “There are many issues facing the African American community, but if we don’t have our health, not much else matters.” The situation looks dire but there is a solution, a weapon as we like to call it. Intermittent fasting is our greatest defense against chronic disease and is the sure path to freedom and escape a system that gets rich while we get sick. In this article I will discuss what intermittent fasting is, why breakfast is not the most important meal of the day and the incredible things that happen to the body while fasting. -The Myth Of 6 Small Meals A Day-. Admittedly, I was once a proponent of eating 6 small meals a day. This was what was taught in my nutrition training. The premise is, the body needs a constant source of energy to fuel its activities and aid in a functioning metabolism. We’ve all been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you skipped breakfast, you might as well throw the entire day away. The truth is, there is no science behind the myth of breakfast being the most important meal of the day or eating six small meals a day. It’s propaganda. The truth is, eating first thing in the morning and then eating every 2-3 hours until you go to bed takes a tremendous toll on the body, especially when the body must process, transport, store or eliminate the myriad of unhealthy food we consume. It results in weight gain, premature aging and chronic disease. I promise you won’t starve if you fast. In fact, I read that the average American has enough fat storage to go at least 2 months without food. -Intermittent FastingIntermittent fasting is a practice that our ancestors have practiced from the slave quarters all the way back to Africa. Dr. Llaila Afrika, author of African Holistic Health explains, “food ideally should be eaten from 12 noon to 7p.m., metabolized in the blood from 7p.m. to 4a.m. and from 4a.m. to noon the body is cleansing”. If we are constantly eating, the body does not have time to cleanse, repair and heal. There are many ways that one can engage in intermittent fasting. I prefer the 16/8 method. 16 hours of fasting, with an 8- hour feeding period. Ideally one’s last meal should be no later than 7p.m. and the first meal of the day (break fast) should be eaten at 11a.m. the following day. -What Happens to Your Body When You Fast?Amazing, incredible things happen to your body when you fast. I have been on an intermittent fasting journey for 227 days now. I have fasted a total of 4,060 hours, spending 74% of my time in a fasting state. Honestly, I am so pleased with the results that I will fast the rest of my life (barring any vacations). Normally each year I get a cold. This year, while I have been fasting, I haven’t had a sore throat, cough or runny/stuffy nose. Whatever has been going around I have been able to avoid. I attribute this to fasting. When you fast, a process called autophagy occurs. This is when the body recycles the old defective protein and mitochondria in the cells. It actually takes the diseased parts of our cells and transmutes them into functioning parts. The body literally begins to heal itself from the inside out when you fast. Here are some other incredible things that happen to your body when you fast: •Weight loss •Improvements in blood pressure •Improvements in cholesterol •Improvements in insulin sensitivity •Reboots the immune system •Increased mental clarity •Increased energy levels Continued Page 10

he Sidewalk Stage Play which debuts at the Paul Robeson Theatre Friday, March 15 features several talented local individuals, some of which are veterans, coupled with a good deal of new faces gracing the stage as well. To put a ribbon and bow on this presentation, co-writers Edreys Wajed and Paulette D. Harris made a deliberate decision to make purposeful room in the stage production in extending opportunity and spotlight on some of the Buffalo’s brightest and talented youth. Behind the curtain, the show boasts the talents of several young students. 13 year old costume apprentice Zeriuah Shadwick who plans to study Theater and Fashion design in college, has been by Paulette’s side for several weeks as a mentee learning the ropes. Zeuriah, along with newcomer to the stage Isaac Fareed, are also long time students of Paulette at the Performing Arts Training program at the Paul Robeson Theatre. Isaac is the bright and gifted son of multi-talented hip hop artist/photographer and entrepreneur Aitina Fareed-Cooke of Get Fokus’d Productions. The play also features custom-designed sneakers created by 14 year old artist Emeka Wajed, which are worn by one Pictured L/R: Zeuriah Shadwick, Emeka Wajed, Edreys Wajed, Eman Wajed, of the stage play actors; a character named Mike. The first sighting of a black panther In Africa in over 100 Years was recently reported not far from where Marvel places the fictional setting of its Oscar-nominated “Black Panther.” The black leopard — as the animals are also known — was spotted in an area north of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The researchers’ findings were published in the African Journal of Ecology in January. Black panthers are uncommon, only about 11 percent of leopards globally are black. But black panthers in Africa are extremely rare. There have been a few reported observations of this subspecies in Africa, but, until now, only one had been confirmed, in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in 1909.

The 4th Annual Science Fair Hosted By WHJESP Was Full “STEAM” Ahead! On Saturday March 9, the Willie Hutch Jones Educational Sports Program (WHJESP) hosted its 4th Annual Science Fair at Burchfield Penney Art Center. Local, middle and high-school students participated in the fair showcasing their hypothesis to theory presentations based on the them “Power Up.” All of the projects were open for public viewing. With enthusiastic applause Willie Hutch Jones welcomed the students to the fair to kick of the presentation segment in Burchfield Penney auditorium where they held demo and audience participatory science demonstrations and a performance by WHJESP Steel Drum Club. The Mistress of Ceremony was Claudine Ewing of WGRZ (NBC). The goal of the WHJESP Science Fair, is to provide an opportunity for student-led inquiry and give kids hands-on experience with the scientific method with the hope to nurture their interest in pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) opportunities on a collegiate level or even as a future career.

BLACK HISTORY SPEECH COMPETITION:

Duncan Kirkwood recently held his 2nd annual Black History Month Speech Competition during Black History month. There were six competitors from four different schools and the winner was Rahim Dunston a junior from Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts. The event partners were the Buffalo Urban League, the Buffalo NAACP, Senator Tim Kennedy, the McClellan-Carr family, the Radford family, True Bethel Baptist Church and Back to Basics Outreach Ministries. Herbert Announces Run For Fillmore District Seat Samuel A. Herbert has announced that he is running for the Fillmore District council seat in the upcoming June 25 Primary. Democratic petitions to get his name on the Democratic primary ballot ae currently being circulated by “The Real Friends of Samuel A. Herbert.” This will be Herbert’s fourth time running for the Fillmore district council seat. “Each time we ran we came in second to the incumbent. This will be our first time running without an incumbent if I make the ballot,” said Herbert, pointing out that he ran in 2007, 2011, and the last run in 2015. "We made the ballot without the Democratic Party endorsement or support,” he added. "April 1st will make 43 years living in Buffalo, 43 years living in the Fillmore District, and 40 years living the same house,” he continued. “I know the concerns of the people living in Fillmore. I'm a fighter I get things done in a timely manner.” Herbert is a graduate of Buffalo State College with an undergraduate degree in natural and political science. Lewis” appeared under her lovely photo! Mr. Lewis, a pillar in the community, thought it was hilarious (he said someone joked that he had finally “come out of the closet!”). Legislator MillerWilliams graciously took it in stride (she’s busy campaigning these days). We thank them both for being so understanding!

ow dare a news organization use its vast resources to launch a sustained, vicious attack on the CAO and its head, L. Nathan Hare, with only hearsay, innuendo, and outright lies undergirding a literal fairytale, concocted with a hidden, ulterior motive that we have yet to discover. It is this writer’s belief however, that the Mayor of the city is the true target of this campaign. Four CAO board members set out to fire CAO head Mr. L. Nathan Hare in October of 2018, because he “had kept them in the dark about important financial information and believed he had mishandled some vital grants.” Stop right there. Audits had been done for that very year, as well as for 2017, and it’s probably safe to conclude that the board had access to them. Secondly, are we to believe that a man who took an agency from over $4 million in debt to a surplus within three years, more than doubled its budget to over $50 million, and nearly tripled its workforce during his tenure… “mishandled some vital grants?” As the news fairytale continues, Mr. Hare allegedly used political connections to fire the board members instead, and then cancelled a forensic audit they’d scheduled to sniff out whatever he’s hiding. Adding insult to injury, the wicked CEO had his henchmen bar them from the next board meeting where they’d planned to cut up in front of cameras, and left them huddled in the cold.

Four More African American Women Circulating Petitions to Get on the Ballot in 2019 Last week we reported that there were 12 Black women seeking political office this year so far, Since that writing we have been made aware of four more Black female political hopefuls who are circulating petitions to get on the ballot for the June 25th Primary election, bringing the total seeking office to 16: •Esther Smothers and Antoinette Craig are candidates for the Lovejoy District Council seat. • Kim Trent is said to be a candidate for the Fillmore district • Cariol Horne also made it public last week that she was running for political office. There are currently no women serving on the Buffalo Common Council. Stay tuned..

Truth be told, the CAO is well able to defend itself, and has already done so. The board has used the email of the main accuser, Jennifer Shank to document the outright lie that at the same time that a board majority voted to fire Hare, “the directors hired a forensic accountant to examine the books and shed more light on the agency's finances.” Ms. Shank’s own email shows an accountant was hired in late December, 2018 to begin work on January 10, 2019. No audit was stopped, because it never started. The CAO has asked the Buffalo News to correct its reporting, citing the malicious damage being done to the organization and its leadership. But apparently, that’s the intent. It’s been reported that CAO attorney Adam Perry fired the four board members. Not so. He only informed them of the termination, which was done according to agency by-laws, something the four members are well aware of. We’re limited on what we can say about the matter, but we know what these four know: that if their termination was improper, they’d be operating in a court of law, not the court of public opinion. Much ado was made of the disgruntled board members being blocked from a meeting, but they announced their plans to create mayhem ahead of time! “A confrontation is expected to erupt Monday at the Community Action Organization,” the March 3rd newspaper reads. “At least two former directors, who were pushed off the board after trying to fire the politically connected CEO, intend to demand reinstatement when the board meets again.” -Continued Next Week“Knowing when to stop, you can avoid any danger.” -Tao Te Ching

In Support of Women Seeking Elected Office Dear Editor I have been asked to sign a lot of political sheets for people running for office this year but they all are men who are running. When I watch TV or read the Challenger I see many women candidates running but they are not on the sheets I am asked to sign. I talked to a Black female who is running in Fillmore and I asked her how come she was not on the signature sheet and she said that was because she was not endorsed by the Democratic Party. Why are there no women endorsed by the Democratic Party? On the paper I signed all I saw were the names of the men. I like to see the women running because I think they care more about us and the inner city and will speak up more than the men who are there now.
