Dr. Kriner Cash
Board Votes to Extend Superintendent's Contract
The Board of Education has voted to extend the contract of School Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash for at least two more years through August 2021. The board gave him an A this year for the job he has done as superintendent and a 3.5 out of 4 on his annual performance evaluation. Dr. Cash is credited with turning the district around and charting a course for reform, which he calls the Education Bargain. He has set a 70% graduation rate as a goal for the district and the number of schools in good standing by the state has more than doubled during his tenure.
n May residents of the Copper Town neighborhood announced that they had filed an Article 78 petition against the City of Buffalo Planning Board to undo the city’s March 25 approval of a development plan that includes a drive-through Tim Hortons at the corner of Michigan and William. “We are fighting for the residents of a vibrant neighborhood who deserve a walkable, beautiful, safe community,” said Gail V. Wells, who, along with Geneva Johnson and Marcia Baker, filed the petition. After two postponements, a hearing has been set for Wednesday, July 17 at 9:30 a.m. in Erie County Court, located at 25 Delaware Avenue, 2nd floor, Part 15. A press conference will be held at the courthouse immediately following the hearing. “The community can help by attending the hearing and press conference” urged Ms. Wells. "This is not about coffee! It is about the Green Code, following the law, safety, self determination, historic preservation, public input, following procedures, walkability and environmental impacts." "New drive throughs are prohibited by the current Green Code," she continued, " The zoning board did not initially grant Ellicott Development a variance to build a drive through. Ellicott Development went to court to have the Zoning Board’s decision over-turned. Now that parking lot must be safe. I demand that the Developer follows the law!” According to the Article 78, Ellicott Development presented a plan for the parking lot without including the necessary traffic calming measures, pedestrian safeguards, bicycle amenities and other safety elements required by law. The stretch of Michigan from Clinton to Broadway which includes the Copper Town neighborhood has been the site of numerous accidents in recent weeks. An article 78 proceeding provides a way to challenge the rulings of administrative agencies, public bodies or officers. The body is the City of Buffalo Planning Board. The petitioners are claiming that the parking lot and drive through are not safe and that the developer did not follow the procedures set in place to ensure proper review by the public and other city departments. -Petition DriveA petition drive was also launched calling on Council President Darius Pridgen to take action on behalf of his constituents Gail Wells (right) and Geneva Johnson and stop the proposed drive thru coffee shop. To sign the petition go to info@losapllc.com “The taxpaying residents of Copper Town support economic development but we expect the law to be followed,” Ms. Wells says. “The neighborhood’s 100 homeowners have invested significant personal resources in the development of our community. We’re developers too!” -Support“Our neighbor, Copper Town, which shares the same zip code, has a development approved by the City of Buffalo Planning Board that required a variance; was only granted the variance through the reversal of a ZBA decision; and fails to provide 'Long term priorities [such as] … neighborhood traffic calming measures, pedestrian and bicycle amenities, and streetscape improvements” according to the Green Code,’" stated community activist Veronica Hemphill-Nichols( See Voices Page 15). “A 21st Century city needs to be walkable, ecological, and fair,” she continued. “ The Green Code purports to be this and the City of Buffalo is proud of the awards the zoning code wins. Now if only the City would enforce and live up to the laws it enacts, there may actually be a renaissance for all.” -By Staff Writer

They included: •George Washington Washington was a major owner of enslaved Africans (over 600) during and after his presidency and the first president to own enslaved Africans while he was president. •Thomas Jefferson Jefferson consistently spoke out against slavery while he owned over 600 AfricanAmerican people throughout his adult life and freed only seven. Jefferson had a longterm relationship with an enslaved African named Sally Hemings., fathering at least six children with her. •James Madison. Madison proposed the ThreeFifths Compromise, which counted enslaved Africans as three fifths of a person for the purposes of taxation and legislative representation. •James Monroe Monroe owned dozens of enslaved Africans and took several with him to Washington to serve at the White House from 1817 to 1825. Monroe supported sending freed slaves to the new country of Liberia; its capital, Monrovia, is named after him. •Andrew Jackson Jackson was not only a slave trader and owner of enslaved Africans, he signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 which forcibly relocated most members of the Native American tribes in the South to Indian Territory. SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND Urban League Young Professionals to Host Annual Affair
CONGRATULATIONS! Uncle James (left) congratulates his nephes, the son of Council Member Wingo.
Brotherly Love Continues
As the result of an unfortunate situation of which man meant for evil, God made good. A young man with one son and four daughters was banned from attending his son's graduation at Hutch Tech High School on Friday, June 27, 2019. But, guess what? God made what seemingly an unhappy day for the graduate turn out to be "A Great Day!" A sad situation became "joy" when he heard a familiar voice in the audience. It was his Uncle James! As he turned around, proudly wearing his cap, and a stole which was decorated by his oldest aunt with pictures of his family with a focus on himself, his dad, and Granddad, I can imagine the thought came to mind as he grew up in Church Sunday School, "What a Mighty God We Serve." His youngest uncle heard of the heartbreaking decision not to allow his dad to attend his graduation, and prayed that God would make a way for him to attend in his brothers' place. God, being a prayer answering God, blessed this uncle to drive alone to Buffalo overnight to be here for his brother and nephew. "Let Brotherly Love Continue" (Hebrews 13:1). It is a blessing for young men to have that father, grandfather, big brother, or uncle in their lives. A joyful celebration (basketball, his favorite pass time sport) eating pizza and wings were enjoyed by family, classmates, members of his church, and friends made it to be an evening of fun and fellowship. In addition to family and friends there were city officials present which was special to Councilmember Ulysees O'Neil Wingo, Sr., as well as Jr. Today, (grandma) and family praise God from whom "ALL" blessings flow. Thank you, Buffalo for your prayers and continued support, I pray God's blessings upon each of you, always remembering, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 12:16b. "Keep Praying!" and REMEMBER TO "LET BROTHERLY LOVE CONTINUE!" Prayerfully submitted with love, Dianne Wingo (Grandma)

Eagle Scout Khalil Morrell
Senior Patrol Leader Khalil Morrell has earned the Rank of Eagle Scout Last Saturday (July 6, 2019), Khalil Morrell held his Eagle Scout Court of Honor at SS. Columba-Brigid Church located at 75 Hickory Street. NYS Senator Tim Kennedy was the guest speaker. The service project included a Youth Swim Safety Clinic and was the final stage in the process to earn the distinctive honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. The Swim Safety Clinic was held at the William-Emslie YMCA. Khalil’s Eagle Scout Service Project involved the development and implementation of a program to provide water safety instruction for school age kids in the City of Buffalo. “As a lifeguard for the City of Buffalo for the past two years, I have seen many kids that are unfamiliar with water safety or act reckless in and around pools. My goal is for all kids to be safe and have a great water experience. This will not only keep pools safe, but it will make my job as a lifeguard easier,” Khalil said. Khalil also raised nearly $1000 in scholarships for YMCA youth members to learn how to swim. Sponsors of Khalil’s Eagle Scout Service Project included the William Emslie YMCA, David Pawlik with Creative Structure Services, Darold Fountain with Aurora Window Systems and Contracting, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the Willie Hutch Jones Education & Sports Program. An Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouting Program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). A scout who attains this rank has completed all the requirements by earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating “Scout Spirit” through living out the Boy Scouts Oath and Law, service and leadership. Khalil earned a total of 33 merit badges. Less than 5% of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Khalil recently graduated from St. Joes Collegiate Institute and will be attending Morgan State University in the fall. Congratulations Eagle Scout Khalil.

Free Swim Lessons for Kids and Adults Offered This Summer
B
By Nanette D. Massey
lack children, as a group, are at the highest level of risk for drowning this time of year. Sadly, a study done by the USA Swimming Foundation, the University of Memphis, and the YMCA found that 64% of Black children don't know how to swim.
Mike Switalksi, head of Buffalo City Swim Racers, tells the story of being a young life guard at a water park near his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There was a regular bus load of black children that came to the park weekly. He and the other lifeguards would place bets on the number of times they predicted they'd be in the water saving a kid. "Coach Mike" noticed this number was exponentially higher than at any other times at the park and vowed to do something about that. BCSR offers free swim lessons to kids (and adults) at area pools around town to families that fall within income guidelines that might qualify them for school lunches or government housing assistance. The program trains the casual swimmer all the way up to those wishing to get serious at the competitive level. The program, in fact, runs year round and offers classes and opportunities for practice five days a week. Of course, basic CPR mastery is a part of the program's core. Coach Mike has trained four year olds who can do chest compressions with perfect timing and precision, significantly reducing the likelihood of swim fatalities. Currently sessions are offered at the public pool in Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo, the William Emslie YMCA, and the pool at D'Youville College. For times and more information, see www. TeamUnify.com or call Coach Mike directly at (716) 359-4729 .

Black Lives Matter In Israel Too…

No Apologies
Donald Trump said recently that he would not apologize for his harsh comments in 1989 about the Central Park Five, the five Black and Latino men who as teenagers were wrongly convicted of the brutal rape of a jogger in New York City. Their case is the subject of the riveting Netflix Ava Duvernay-directed hit miniseries: “When they See Us.” Trump purchased newspaper ads back then calling for New York state to adopt the death penalty after the attack.

UNREST IN BENIN
After 52 days under virtual house arrest, the former president of the West African nation of Benin was set free and fled across the border to Togo last week without a word to his supporters or the media.Who had held him? The country’s current president, Patrice Talon, a businessman whose grip on the country — formerly one of Africa’s most stable democracies — has grown increasingly autocratic since his election in 2016. Benin had long prided itself on a robust democracy that allowed freedom of speech, fair elections and peaceful transitions of power for nearly the last three decades. But recent crackdowns on free speech, repression of political opponents, and the detention of the former president, Thomas Boni Yayi — all once unthinkable here — have sent the country reeling.

As I awoke from deep peaceful slumber To the songs of birds awaiting Ra's wonder I thought more sleep, surely more rest My mind’s eye looked at me in jest Arise, Ra-pportunity to adore Ra's splendor! Once more! I could not ignore So for coffee, I headed towards the corner store Ra's rays shining bright Before me, a never seen before sight Two canaries?! Awesome to behold! Coats bright yellow, shining like gold Gazing at Ra, arriving to my practice spot Movements of the Gods and Goddesses Practicing yoga with Dua in my heart Ra's circle in the center of my forehead as I closed my eyes Where some say Lives my third I say my First Eye! As if speaking with me, the circle formed into a heart Then elongating brightly, I saw Ra's rays flowing through every body part Inhaling deeply, great salutations Dua Ra, Dua Shu Namaste, Creation! The second annual garden tour will be held next Saturday, July 20 from10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Now in its second year, the East Side Garden Walk embraces a wide range of gardens - from urban farms to simple lots cared for by neighbors, and even a jazz-inspired garden. Take time to talk to the gardeners who make these gardens special. East side gardening shows a strong sense of community. Even when the gardens are private, if there are vegetables or plants to be shared, the gardeners readily do so. Sometimes it’s why the garden was planted in the first place. The area also boasts a number of urban farms, one as large as two acres. If you are looking for flowers, you will find them too! Delavan), Central Library downtown, Crane Dudley , East Clinton , Niagara North Park and Riverside.

incorporated Kemetic moon salutation in some of my classes … either way any form of yoga can benefit a person including one’s body image no matter what race, color, sex or religion. CN: As a Black Woman was it hard to find people that looked like you in the practice? Jo Jo: Locally yes, but I think when a Black woman sees another Black woman doing poses that they would normally think is not for them, it inspires them to want to do it. That’s one of the reasons I began posting videos on Instagram and where I get a large amount of Black women responding with raised interest and questions. CN:How do you tackle body confidence issues in class Jo Jo: Women in general tend to have body related issues. In class I love to do goddess pose which is a very empowering pose, Warrior 1, 2 which are strong poses to help stimulate confidence, Tree Pose which helps ground you, and Knee to Chest which I often tell students to give themselves a hug in this pose. I also yell out affirmations in between poses and have students repeat and after classes we have a Self Love Yoga mantra that we say together.

oAnnah Thompson is one of the few certified Black female Yogi’s in the Western New York area. At 33, she owns and manages her own studio, Self Love Yoga (aka SLY studio), a quiet neat space located in the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center at 1201 Pine Street just five minutes away from the falls, one of the most visited wonders of the world . Jo Jo the Yogi has been practicing yoga since 2012 and stretching her Black Girl Magic across WNY guiding students through Hatha Yoga, the main style she teaches. She offers a variety of affordable classes like gentle hatha, classic hatha, self love flow and newer classes like trap, hip hop and chair yoga. Yet Despite her obvious success – she has nearly 20,000 followers on her instagram - this beautiful and focused millennial wants to attract more women of color, to share with them the beauty, power and benefits of yoga. “I think social media has played a big role in the yoga trend and that’s great but I want to attract more women especially Black women in the WNY area to come and experience yoga. I want to help them realize it’s not just for someone who has a different type of figure,” she said. “ This practice has helped me so much that it drove me to want to help others." Jo Jo’s personal transformation takes the lead in her passion for the art-form and through every bend, stretch and flow of her scheduled classes she aims to encourage, inspire, uplift and challenge students, as she says “to leave their problems and worries on the mat.” In a recent Q & A Jo Jo shared parts of her journey and encourages all to consider adding a little Self Love to their life through yoga. CN: How were you first introduced to yoga? Jo Jo: “I don’t have the normal yoga journey. At first I would hear about yoga from others or see social media posts but never actually got into doing it.” I hit a low point in my life and that’s when I ordered a yoga video from Amazon. CN: Did you love it and latch on right away? Jo Jo: It was ok but I’m a former athlete and although I really wasn’t a “fit” athlete at the time yoga wasn’t challenging enough, so I returned the video, but about 4 years ago yoga called me again. CN: When it called you did you have a yoga partner? Jo Jo: At first It was me alone, then I did yoga classes at the gym with friend, then me alone again with the help of apps, books and Instagram. For me the challenges were basically adjustments. Being a Black woman, most my weight is my lower body and certain poses I’ve had to adjust to obtain. CN: So was yoga a more physical journey or a spiritual journey for you? Jo Jo: It changed throughout the years. It wasn’t until I got past the physical kinks where it became spiritual. Yoga can mean different things to someone else initially. Whatever road someone starts on, as they continue, I believe it will always lead to spiritual rejuvenation. CN: What type of yoga are you certified to teach? Jo Jo: I completed my 200hr certification in the spring of 2018 for Hatha yoga just after opening SLY studio but learned about different styles of yoga including Yin yoga, ashtanga, Kemetic, etc. When I teach I don’t write or plan. I may include a sequence that is moAe yin-like or even a sun salutation that is Kemetic. …For me to teach means I am helping guide people along their spiritual journey. I don’t like to be tied down to just one thing so I do what feels right with the energy in the class. CN: How do you feel about other yoga styles? Jo Jo: I think all types of yoga are very regal in the development of mind, body, and spirit. I’ve
CN: You’re obviously a true leader, have you always been this way? I consider myself a leader now but I wasn’t always a leader. I was very shy didn’t speak much, and would have never dreamed of owning any businesses. I like to encourage people to be their best version of themselves. I’m a yogi but I can be very direct and transparent which surprises some people, but a leader as a yogi is something that is new considering the messages I get or comments on Instagram. I was like oh wow these people actually look up to me. ..Ok cool ! CN: What’s in the future for Jo Jo the Yogi? Jo Jo: I’m thinking of getting certification for Ashtanga Yoga at some point… I plan on holding a Kemetic yoga event this year and pretty soon I will be coming out with merchandise to help promote self love and confidence that can be purchased on my website including ebooks, and videos, essential oil mixes and much So be on the look out! Yoga: An African Self-Healing Practice “Don’t practice yoga to get better at yoga. Practice yoga to get better at living.” frican Holistic Health encompasses the body, mind, spirit connection. Dis-ease (disease) in one area will always manifest as dis-ease (disease) in another area. The body speaks the mind, and often a healing of the mind and spirit will create a healing in the physical body. Another fundamental concept of African Holistic Health is an understanding that the body has the miraculous ability to heal itself, if given the right conditions. While we tend to focus on eating right and drinking water as a way to promote physical healing within our bodies, we must not forget to address the mental and spiritual components of our health. This will also create an environment where the body can heal itself. In addition to intermittent fasting and plant-based dieting, our ancient African ancestors also left us with yet another self-healing tool; Yoga. Although Yoga is touted as having originated in India about 5,000 years ago, further research reveals that Yoga originated in Egypt and is called Kemetic Yoga. Kemetic Yoga focused on creating an environment where the body could heal and restore itself through physical movement and focused breathing techniques. These gentle, deliberate and focused movements created an environment where the mind and spirit would be at ease and then the physical body would follow. I had the opportunity to attend my first Yoga class not too long ago. I was a little nervous because my exercises of choice are running and lifting weights. I knew Yoga would be different than anything I’ve ever experienced, but I wanted to be fully open to this experience. I walked into the studio and immediately felt a sense of peace and calm. I struggled with some of the movements, but after the class I literally felt like a weight had been lifted. For that hour, I went within. I didn’t have to think about the laundry list of things I had to do. I didn’t have to worry about the daily microaggressions that I experience as an African American. The transgenerational trauma that is embedded in my DNA didn’t feel as heavy. As Lena Horne said, “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way that you carry it”. My Yoga experience allowed me to carry my load differently. When the class ended and everyone said “Namaste”, I silently offered thanks to Mama Africa for yet another self-healing tool. We have the power to create an environment where the body, mind and spirit can heal. All we have to do is look to our homeland for the practices that will manifest physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing.

Cultural Center's Mother Daughter Tea Was Beautiful: Service at Facility Was Not... Dear Editor: The African American Cultural Center’s Mother, Daughter & Friends Tea Committee would like to thank you all for supporting this year event. However the venue did not display the caliber and expectation we all have been accustomed to. We have received numerous complaints by our guests, past and new regarding the establishment. We are aware of the issues that you all shared and we definitely agree corrections are needed. A meeting has been requested with the venue to address the concerns and issues and we are waiting on a response. Again, we sincerely apologize and hope you will continue to support our fundraiser in the future. Dorothea Baxter-Hughes, Tea Committee Chair Agnes M. Bain, Executive Director
“Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day Celebrates 10th Anniversary” By Starr Valentino "Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day” is recognized in cities all across America including cities in Canada. It's a Day that millions of people spread neighborly love . This Day is currently recognized on the National Calendar Day listing. On May 16, 2019 I celebrated the 10th year anniversary of the founding and celebration of “Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day.” I was honored by Councilman David Franczyk at Buffalo City Hall for spreading "Neighborly Star Valentino Love." I also received honors of recognition from Governor Cuomo, Congressman Brian Higgins, State Senator Timothy Kennedy, County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Assemblyman Angelo Morinello of Niagara falls and Mayor Paul Dyster of Niagara Falls. Buffalo Councilman David Franczyk sponsored that ceremony, and many others previously, on my behalf. The City of Buffalo has absolutely the best leadership in all of America. We are going take this initiative and parlay it throughout all of Western New York. We are considering a “Do Something Good for your Neighbor” event at Buffalo Canalside set for possible 2020. The goal is to create an environment that people feel nothing but love; but also create a message to spread acts of kindness throughout all neighborhoods. I started this vision back in Atlanta Georgia in 2009 walking down the streets handing out gifts cards, t-shirts, buying food and clothing to random people. I volunteer my time and talents throughout the community trying to set an example. Atlanta City Councilman Michael Bond declared May 16, 2011 “Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day." That same year I also was honored the Mayor Award & key to the City of Atlanta by former Mayor Kasim Reed. On May 16, 2012 Councilman Franczyk declared “Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day” in Buffalo, which made it the second city to recognized this effort. Today thousands of cities recognize "Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day. This was truly a calling and a mission that God called upon myself to fullfill.
“We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” - John Russwurm, Freedom’s Journal. 1827 America’s 1st Black Newspaper
We Lost The Battle But We Did Not Lose the War... Dear Fillmore Family, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank all of you who voted. I especially want to thank those who voted for me. Thank you SEIU, Betty Jean Grant, Karla Thomas, Alberto Cappas, my newfound Bangladesh family and everyone who took time to help me. To my wonderful campaign team of women who beat back the cold on February 26th to get signatures on opening day – thank you. Tina Sanders While running for elected office was a new experience for me, my desire to serve my community is not. Unfortunately, the legislative body of our city will continue to make decisions without the diversity my election would have ensured. Why? Because its composition remains absent the presence of a woman. In running for Fillmore District Councilperson, I discovered unfairness beyond imagination. The way the district is designed screams gerrymander. Half of the district has been ignored while the other was treated like an investment gold mine. The distribution of resources and site selection for development projects lacks fairness in epic proportions. Housing issues like rodents, roofs in dire need of repair or replacement, broken steps and sidewalks and over 5,000 vacant lots that preclude streets from becoming neighborhoods because there are no neighbors. Unless the successful candidate does something different from his predecessor, he will simply become what he has replaced. I am not a casualty of the war of neglect that divides the Fillmore District. I am a survivor of it and I intend to use what I’ve learned to remain on the battlefield and fight for us from a different position. Hope to see you there! Tina L. Sanders
City Needs to Better Enforce and Live Up The Green Code Laws It Enacts!
Dear Editor: The Fruit Belt is an original walkable community and residents know the value of pedestrian friendly designed sidewalks and streets safe for the young, old, and those of varying physical abilities. Our belief in and desire for walkable communities is so deep that on September 18, 2014 we held a meeting on the Green Code that was separate from the dear City Hall Office of Strategic Planning. We educated ourselves because we editor have had to protect ourselves from parking lots and parking infractions. We have had to fight against unnecessary demolitions that destroyed the unique historic fabric of our established 1835 community. For this reason, we are students of the Green Code and watchdogs for City enforcement of its own laws. Our neighbor, Copper Town, which shares the same zip code, has a development approved by the City of Buffalo Planning Board that: •Required a variance •Was only granted the variance through the reversal of a ZBA decision •Fails to provide “Long term priorities [such as] … neighborhood traffic calming measures, pedestrian and bicycle amenities, and streetscape improvements” (page 78 Green Code). A 21st Century city needs to be walkable, ecological, and fair. The Green Code purports to be this and the City of Buffalo is proud of the awards the zoning code wins. Now if only the City would enforce and live up to the laws it enacts, there may actually be a renaissance for all. Veronica Hemphill-Nichols Restorative_Justice@yahoo.com

WNY-Urban Arts Collective Inc.
Are We Not Part of the 'Public' in Public Art? By John Baker
WNY-Urban Arts Collective Inc. was established as a direct result of local African American artists and concerned citizens being fed up with the historical inequity of process and opportunity in the implementation of the Public Art Project (Freedom Wall) in the African American community. It was our collective view that the process and implementation of the project about our history did not serve the best interests of the community or local African American artists. Without question it was totally disrespectful. The excuse for exclusion, “we don’t know any Black Artists,” is no longer valid because of the formation of the Urban Arts Collective (WNY-UAC). We have identified almost 100 local African American visual artists in our community. Additionally, the WNY-UAC has participated in exhibitions and local events John creating opportunities for local Black artists and positively representing our comBAKER munity (i.e. Burchfield-Penney Art Center, WNY Artist Group Gallery, Main St Gallery, BCAT, Juneteenth, Sankofa, African American Heritage Festival and Jefferson Art Festival). It is said “Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.” Is history repeating itself? There is a tremendous infusion of funding resources and opportunities currently being experienced for Public Art. A number of projects in the planning process are targeting our community. Do our local African American artists and community occupy a respectable seat at the table? There are already suggestions to offer the majority of this funding and opportunities to artists not only from different states but from other countries! Dollars will be made here but not spent here. These actions show what is not being said verbally. Clearly these developers don’t understand, appreciate or respect our art or local African American artists! We will soon be invited to a public meeting where information will be shared and our input sought. Will this truly be an interactive process? Or just designed to give the appearance of public engagement? Will it be what we have historically recognized as a “done deal” under the pretense that substantial input took place in order to craft a successful public project? We must confront the real challenge of cultural relevance whereby local African American artists and communities are approached with greater respect and timely, effective communication. We are obligated to call out presentations, masked as engagements, which in reality are a vain attempt to disguise the true purpose: a rubber stamp of approval. Decisions made without developmental dialogue between local African American artists and their community with Public Arts organizations, reveal both inequity and exploitation Local African American artists and community advocates voices fell on deaf ears in the past. With unified voices, WNY Urban Arts Collective will not allow historic inequity and exploitation to be continuously repeated. How many local African American artists have been selected out of all the Public Art projects since the 2017 FREEDOM WALL? We demand equal representation especially in our own community! (John Baker is the President of the WNY-Urban Arts Collective)

D.A.D.S. SUMMER SLAM BASKETBALL
Spike Lee (right) celebrated the 30th anniversary of Do The Right Thing on June 30, 2019 as news of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant’s decision came out. Rod Strickland (left) , former Knick and godfather of Kyrie Irving was also at the block party celebration for Do The Right Thing in Brooklyn, NY.
The Bigger Three (To Be Free) By Ashley Dorcely On June 30, 2019 at 6p.m. a different sort of “Juneteenth” occurred. Several talented athletes decided to take their talents to “different shores” where they feel the “waves” of the basketball world will better suit them. Some felt they needed to break free of the demands placed on them by current teams, public persona and the media. Others were looking to play with their friends, players they’ve admired or on teams that could afford them a chance to “put a ring on it.” Hopefully, you remember Bird, McHale, Parish or Magic, Worthy, Jabbar or even Jordan, Toni and Pippen. All who have been replaced now by an era of the “Big Three” and I don’t mean Ice Cube’s basketball league, though that’s pretty good basketball in itself. What I mean is where players join forces to achieve the goal of a championship. The latest dynasty now defunct was that of the Golden State Warriors lead by Durant, Curry and Thompson. Out of their ashes a new “Phoenix” has arisen. No, not as in the Phoenix Suns or the X-Men but more as in a renewal of time. And for many the time was now to get a Bigger Three together. One team in particular who had been planning for this moment was the New York Knicks who fell very short of their goals with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving joining the Brooklyn Nets instead. To add insult to injury they were also joined by DeAndre Jordan who was traded to the Knicks during the 2018-2019 season. Obviously, forming a new Big Three initiated a week filled with all sorts of ROOMS FOR RENT “fireworks” within the NBA landscape. ROOMS FOR RENT: I write all this to say that Delavan-Humboldt area, myself and other Knicks’ fans Bailey-Delavan. $325such as Spike Lee are now $480. Everything included. praying for the likes of Jesus (716)818-3410. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this Foreclosure Action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney of your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. We are attempting to collect a debt. Any information obtained will be used for that purpose. The foregoing summons is served upon you by publication pursuant to an order of the Honorable Joseph R.
