INSIDE ROCHESTER

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren Loses Primary to Councilman Evans Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren was defeated Tuesday night by a wide margin in the Democratic primary by City Councilmember Malik Evans. Ms. Warren, who was first elected in 2013, was vying for a third term. She was the first female and second African American mayor of Rochester, a city of about 200,000 people. Unofficial results had Evans with more than Malik Evans (left) and Mayor Lovely Warren. 65% of the vote with two districts yet to report. The popular elected official faced several recent controversies. Last month, her husband was arrested after the police said they found drugs and guns during searches of his car and home, and was accused of being part of a midlevel cocaine trafficking ring. Ms. Warren was not charged with a crime. Mayor Warren, gracious in defeat, took to the podium after Evans at a separate gathering, thanking him and urging her supporters to get behind his incoming administration. She delivered an impassioned and conciliatory speech. "Me running was about my daughter, and all the little Black girls of this city," Warren said. "It was about letting them know that no matter what comes your way, you will never ever give up. You don’t quit. You don’t walk away. "We may think that today was about an ending," Warren said. "Today was about a new beginning for me, for my daughter. ... It is OK that the city has chosen to go in a different direction. I want you all to support the new leadership. I want to make sure that you gird him up .... Pray for him — like you prayed for me."

Mayor Brown announced last week that Buffalo will receive $3.5 million in stimulus funds to aid minority-owned businesses in Buffalo. The funding, received through the federal American Rescue Plan, will reportedly be administered through the Beverly Grey Center on E. Utica and Jefferson. However officials do not yet know how much the city will distribute to businesses that qualify, nor do they know how many businesses they expect to help through the program according to the Buffalo News. The aid could come in the form of a grant or nonmonetary assistance such as mentoring. Prior to the minority businesses funding announcement, the Mayor announced that some of the funding would be used to expand the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program and pay for scholarships to the Northland Workforce Training Center.

ton decided to run for mayor against Byron Brown, a 15-year entrenched incumbent, she said she made that decision because she was tired of seeing her community in the condition that it was in. The average person didn’t think she had even a remote chance of winning. When Kimberly Beaty was initially discouraged from running for sheriff, she said she was told that she didn’t “look like a sheriff” by the Erie County Democratic Chair, and dropped out. Supporters encouraged her to get back in the race. But the challenge of running in a county wide election was huge and she had already lost precious ground. On Tuesday night both Walton and Beaty celebrated historic election primary victories: India winning the race for mayor and Kimberly winning the race for Erie County Sheriff. “Tonight’s result proves that Buffalonians demand community-minded, peoplefocused government, and we’re ready to serve them,” declared Walton on election night. “For too long, we’ve seen our city work for politicians, for developers, for the police union, but not for ordinary working families. In our city, everyone will have a seat at the table. This victory will resound here in Buffalo and throughout the nation, showing that a progressive platform that puts people over profit is both viable and necessary. We look forward to working with the Brown administration to ensure a smooth transition for the benefit of all Buffalonians." With 100% of Election Day Districts and early voting counted in the race for Mayor, Mr. Brown sill had not conceded and insisted the race was too close to call,

On My Mind

Tearing Down the Stigmas of Mental Illness

M

ental health is often misunderstood and stigmatized within the African American community. As a behavioral health professional with 20 years of experience, I have seen firsthand how these conditions can impact lives of those, both young and old. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one out of five adults live with a diagnosable mental health diagnosis in any given year. Since January of this year, the numbers of people experiencing depression and anxiety, according to some sources, have Karl doubled. And the African American community is not immune. Generations of historical SHALLOWHORN trauma, oppression, and Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, combined with ever present social determinants of health, all add up to a perfect storm of distress for many of us. My Mental Health Journey I include myself in this statistic. I live with co-occurring bipolar and addiction disorder. I experienced my first episode as a college freshman in 1981. I spent the next 7 years cycling in and out of Buffalo area mental health hospital units and was even a patient twice at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. It was not until mid-January 1988 when I was introduced to 12 Step recovery that my life began to take a fortunate turn. As a result of my experience in recovery, I entered the field of addiction counseling in 1992. It was here that I learned how to help others implement the tools that would support their wellbeing. Since that time, my career has had several twists and turns, including working in higher education for twelve years, but because of my simple desire to let people know that “recovery is possible,” when I ventured into the world of mental health advocacy and training in 2008, little did I know where things would lead. What I Have Learned One of the most critical lessons I have learned in my journey of recovery is that finding mental and emotional wholeness is not something to be taken for granted and cannot be done alone. I have discovered the value of counseling and having someone who isn’t trying to give advice or tell me what to do. Through this therapeutic process I am able to learn what works best for me. It's OK to Ask and Give Help I have also discovered that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. We, as a community, need to get over the belief that if someone is struggling mentally and emotionally, they don’t need our help. We need to hold each other up. Lord knows there is enough going on in the world that we can all use a shoulder to lean on. I would not be where I am at today if it wasn’t for the support I received from my family and friends over the years. No one does this alone. NEED HELP? If you are reading this and find yourself in need of help, know that there is always hope for a better way. If you are looking

for support and don’t know where to turn you can contact Mental Health Advocates of WNY at 886-1242. Never give up! Real Estate is Often at the Center

Boomers Are Preparing For The Best Of Their Lives

D

o you have a real estate strategy? This is a question licensed realtor and MMB Realty Group co - founder, Rosalind Burgin often asks her clients during an initial conversation. Research shows that baby boomers, retirees, seniors, and millennials are changing the real estate market substantially. What MMB Realty Group, (MMB) realtors have noted is that seniors are vibrant and ready to make real estate investments to make their lives simpler by purchasing a smaller home or downsizing to an apartment. There are also some seniors that are focusing on generational wealth building and assisting in purchasing homes for family members. “What we would like Boomers and other seniors to know is that we are here to help. We recognize that change can be hard, and our goal is to minimize the stress level,” stated Rosalind. Mia Mootry, MMB Realty Group, Inc. co -founder added,” MMB values teamwork and work to walk this transition with you - you are not alone.” “We remind clients making the decision to downsize can be an exciting time because you have choices and finally it’s a time to focus on what you want,” stated Tamika Murphy, co-founder of MMB Realty Group, Inc. Rosalind Burgin has a list of topics that are included in her conversations with Boomers and seniors ready to sell their homes. Planning is key to make this important real estate transition smoother. Rosalind states, “to begin the planning I always ask the following questions.” 1. Where are you going if you sell your home? 2. Do you have a mortgage on your home, if so, do you know your pay off amount?

3. Do you know what your home is worth? 4. What is your time frame to make a move? 5. Who is helping you? Who are the decision makers? Once you have determined that you are ready to sell and have pertinent information about your home then we move to the next steps. STEP 1: The main question is to determine plans for the next home or apartment and the process of downsizing personal belongings. Based on the answers, MMB realtors and the client can begin thinking about and researching various resources that will be needed. Identifying resources could include discussions with family members, Erie County Senior Services, a home organizer, a big trash removal company, and a cleaning service. Step 2: Developing a plan to sell the house. One factor that is true today is that we are in a seller’s market, so your home if properly prepared will sell quickly. Experienced realtors are positioned to guide you through the buy and sale process. About MMB Realty Group, Inc. MMB Realty Group is a joint venture of three experienced female realtors, Rosalind Burgin Jamia “Mia” Mootry, and Tamika Murphy, who are focused on providing each client a customized and quality real estate experience. Real estate is not just a business transaction to them. They are committed to creating a new type of Real Estate Experience. “We are One Team. One Vision. One Mission. One Goal - Serving One YOU!” Contact MMB Realty Group at (716) 534-8495. Learn more at www.mmbrealtygroup.com or on Facebook @MMB Realty Group.

11 FROM FREEDOM TO FREETHEM: REIMAGINING JUNETEENTH 2021

World News From left: Myles Carter, Dominique Calhoun, Joel Moore

Winners on the Front Line For Positive Change Kenneth Kuunda

Kenneth Kaunda: Hero of the Struggle to Free the Motherland Africa and the Black World are honoring the late Kenneth Kaunda, a hero of the struggle to free the Motherland, a longtime statesman and leader in efforts to move Africa forward. Kaunda, the former president of Zambia and the last giant of Africa’s frontline leaders in turbulent struggles against colonialism and foreign domination of the continent, died on June 17, 2021. He led the southern ‘African nation to independence and governed from 1964 to 1992. He was 97 years old. Kaunda was a leader of the campaign that ended British colonial rule (during colonization the country was formerly known as Northern Rhodesia) and he became Zambia's first democratically elected president in 1964. He led the country, which became a one-party state, until 1991 when he was defeated in an election following the introduction of multiparty politics. During his rule, Kaunda made Zambia a center for anti-colonial groups fighting to end White minority rule in southern African countries including Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Kaunda allowed the guerilla organizations to maintain military bases, training camps, refugee centers and administrative offices.

Activists Myles Carter, who ran county-wide for sheriff and Dominique Calhoun, who threw her hat in the ring for 1st District County Legislator, did not win their respective Primary races on Tuesday. Conscientious young attorney Joel Moore, who after being knocked off the ballot in his quest for a city court judgeship, was not even given the opportunity to run in the Primary.Attorney Moore, a Democrat, will appear on the Conservative Line in November). But all three are winners in their own right. Myles said it best after the election: "We win no matter what, the issues and solutions facing our community are now mainstream. We will continue the fight for justice and accountability." These bright young political newcomers, and community activists, took their push for change beyond the marches and demonstrations and decided to go for the chance to get into the system to effectuate real change. We’d like to congratulate them for stepping to the plate, speaking truth to power, and bringing issues to the light - which without their advocacy would remain in the dark. They deserve our respect and support! Onward Ever! Backwards Never!

IN THE MATTER OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY PROCEEDING IN REM PURSUANT TO THE IN REM PROVISIONS OF THE ERIE COUNTY TAX ACT AND THE RESOLUTION OF THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE AS SHOWN BY RESOLUTION NO. 50 ADOPTED AT THEIR 6th SESSION HELD ON MARCH 18, 2021

During his 24-year tenure at Bethel – Buffalo, Rev. Stenhouse served as the executive director of Bethel Head Start and oversaw the formation of the Bethel Community Development Corporation in 1998. Securing both a $50,000 grant from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and a $1.5 million three-year grant from Fleet Bank and LISC, Rev. Stenhouse led the Bethel CDC in the construction of 14 lowmoderate income homes in the Cold Spring area; a $2.7 million daycare facility; a retail incubator for entrepreneurs for minority entrepreneurs on Jefferson Avenue; and 30 rental units in partnership with Belmont Housing. The Bethel CDC also purchased 1461 Main Street to house the administrative offices of Bethel Head Start. Within the Western New York Conference of the AME Church, Rev. Stenhouse currently serves as Presiding Elder of the Buffalo-Rochester District, and as a Connectional Trustee of the Connectional Conference.

PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY THE COUNTY OF ERIE BY ACTION IN REM

Remaining committed to his community, Rev. Stenhouse is a founding member of the historic Jeremiah Partnership, which works to address the housing, economic development and educational needs of eastside residents. In 2003, he was appointed to the Canisius College Board of Regents and the Buffalo State College Community Advisory Committee. He has also served on the Board of Directors of both LEWAC Associates of Western New York, Inc., and Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) of Buffalo. In 2004, Rev. Stenhouse was appointed by Gov. George Pataki to the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority, making him the first clergy member to serve on the nine-member team. Rev. Richard Allen Stenhouse holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University at Buffalo and a Master of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary. He resides in Buffalo with his wife, Sharon Davis-Stenhouse. They have one daughter, Nicole; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. It has certainly been a long time coming, but it is also very well-deserved. The congregation of Bethel AME Church and the communities impacted by Rev. Stenhouse’s leadership and dedication congratulate him on his retirement! “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

IN REM NO.169 INDEX NO. 2021-6000090 Please take notice that on the 10th day of May, 2021 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law. The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 10th day of May, 2021. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County. EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof.

PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption. RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 7th day of July, 2021 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument. LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 7th day of July, 2021. SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Making a lasting impact in Buffalo At Bank of America, we have long been committed to advancing racial equality and economic opportunity in the communities where we work and live. Recognizing the urgency of the moment, we’ve expanded our longstanding efforts to drive progress by committing an additional $1.25 billion over five years to create opportunity for people and communities of color. By partnering with organizations here in Buffalo, we’re continuing to align our resources to help drive sustainable progress locally. Our investments and partnerships will help address critical issues and long-term gaps including: • connecting workers to new skills and enhanced job readiness • expanding affordable housing options for more people • ramping up lending and support to local small businesses • increasing access to healthcare and addressing food insecurity We know there’s so much more work to be done. My teammates and I remain committed to the job ahead. Together with our local partners, we can make a real difference. What would you like the power to do?®

Working together We’re collaborating with a variety of organizations to help our community move forward. They include: Buffalo Prep Habitat for Humanity Buffalo FeedMore WNY Pathstone Enterprise Center
