Newly Elected Rochester Mayor Malik Evans Issues Call to Action in Victory Speech Newly elected Mayor of Rochester, Malik Evans, issued a call for "an army of willing citizens" to deal with the pressing issue of city violence, education, and neighborhood stability during his victory speech Tuesday. "Are we ready to get to work? Then let's get to work!" he declared. Evans is currently assembling his cabinet. The 41-yearyoung Democrat has been the presumptive next mayor since the primary back in June, after defeating incumbent Lovely Warren. -Who is Malik EvansMayor Evans, formerly an at-large member of Rochester City Council, has a long record of community involvement and leadership in the Rochester area. His service to the Rochester community began when he was just a teen growing up in the city and attending Wilson Magnet High School. Malik initiated the City-County Youth Council to help get young people in Monroe County involved in community service. His extensive community involvement led to speaking engagements throughout the country on the role youth can play in community transformation. His election to Council in 2017 was a homecoming, as he had served previously as Legislative Aide to Rochester City Council from 2000-2002. In 2003, Malik decided to apply his leadership skills to public service by running for election to the Rochester Board of Education. Upon winning the citywide election, he became the youngest person ever elected to the Board. As a member of the governing board of one of the largest urban school districts in New York State, Malik’s motto was simple: “We can find solutions to our most pressing challenges by focusing on finding common ground.” He served as Board President from 2008-2013 and has worked tirelessly to ensure that students in Rochester have access to the same opportunities that he had. Malik has spent his career in finance, working to ensure that individuals have access to the knowledge, tools and information that will help them build a stronger financial future. Malik is very active in the Rochester community.Malik’s latest challenge is running after his young sons, who serve as daily reminders that we must create a brighter future for the coming generation.

If you were born in the 1960’s then you most likely remember the Miami Dolphins dominance throughout the 1970’s of the Buffalo Bill. The Bills could not win a game against the Dolphins in that decade. The Dolphins did not have to cheat to beat the Bills of the 70’s. It usually was a good old fashion butt whipping. The Juice - O.J. Simpson- only made those games interesting. Fast forward today its very enjoyable to see The Buffalo Bills continuing to put a beat down on the Dolphins. The bye week is always problematic to most teams because it gets you off your rhythm and routine which are very important for most team sports. The Bills were no different and had to shake off the rust in the first half. The Bills were lucky that the Miami Dolphins played awful and continued to make mistakes in crucial situations. Tua Tagovailoa is a good quarterback that needs better talent around in order to be successful. I do think his arm strength in cold weather will be a question mark for him playing in this division. Bills quarterback Josh Allen was the team’s leading rusher with 55 yards which happened because Zack Moss and Devin Singletary only had 15 carries for a combined 47 yards. That’s not enough carries to establish a potent running game. . It’s up to Daboll to call for more running plays and putting Josh Allen in a better position to win games down the stretch. Cole Beasley was the hot receiver against Dolphins and he said,” I never go at anybody and push for the ball. We have plenty of weapons like Steph, Emmanuel, Gabriel and all I can do is my job and you got to win for him that’s all I can do. Josh found a way to get me the ball and it works itself out.” Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott said,” I do whatever this team needs most. I give the Coaches credit for making the adjustments. This is the NFL life in the NFL every week is tight margins and records don’t matter. You must bring

he Afrikan Proverb that it takes a Village to Raise a Child is apropos here, as these school buildings should be made part of the Village, and we - the people must ensure as members of Village - our children are served with every possible resource for them to continue the legacy of our very existence. Our challenge is to come to that consensus, which will be messy for many because of the extent in which our people have been mentally colonized and traumatized by white supremacy. This in essence is the STRUGGLE, to decolonize our minds and begin the arduous process of freeing/emancipating ourselves and our children's dependence on the colonizers.

The Rochester City School District (RCSD) is 80% Black and Brown children, while the majority of the teachers are Euro-American women who live in the suburbs. That is a blatant disconnect, especially knowing they bring into the classrooms their inherent bias and privilege to the conscious and unconscious detriment of our children. Hence, another reason why the Unions want to bring back SRO's and not demanding the full implementation of Restorative Practices, because the Unions recognize Restorative Practices if manifested correctly will result in decolonizing our community, it will result in stabilizing the commuContinued Pge 18 nity of internecine violence, and create a foundation for greater unity and uniformity in the community at large. hat a difference a few months make. In June India Walton, a bright young political newcomer, defeated four-term entrenched incumbent Byron Brown in a stunning primary election day upset victory. The win made national news, thrusting Ms. Walton, a Democratic Socialist, into the national spotlight, as she was poised to become Buffalo’s first female mayor and the first socialist mayor of a large U.S. city in 60 years. But Tuesday night the tables turned as Mayor Brown and supporters celebrate. preliminary voting results in the November 2 general election strongly suggested that Mayor Brown would win a stunning victory as a write in candidate against Ms. Walton for an unprecedented fifth term. The numbers are convincing, but nothing can be finalized until after all of the write-in, absentee and military votes have been counted. And that count, experts say, could take until the end of the month - and longer if there are any court challenges. It was a gracious Ms. Walton who took the development in stride. "I am not disappointed by any means. I’m actually encouraged by the level of engagement we’ve seen this election on the local, statewide and national levels.” “I look forward to continue to work with the citizens of Buffalo - the working class people, those who have gone unseen and unheard for far too long,” she said on election night. “I think that at the end of all of this when the dust settles, we will continue to make progress, continue to reduce poverty and make sure that we shine a bright light on those who have lived in the shadow for far too long…” She thanked all her supporters and said she was looking forward to working with any elected official moving forward. -Four More YearsMayor Brown delivered an energetic victory speech and thanked exuberant supporters chanting “four more years!” “They said it was impossible to win a write in,” said Brown, “ but you can’t count a Buffalonian out!” His win, he declared, “was one of the greatest come back stories in our history." “The people have spoken from every community of Buffalo, cutting across demographic lines,” he continued. Their choice, he said, was four more years of his administration; four more years of “diversity, op- India Walton: Street Legacy Photos portunity and inclusion for all.” "I look forward to continue to work “The people choose four more years of growth with the citizens of Buffalo the ,stemming from investment flowing into our city and working class people, those who you know what? It has yet to be known how many of the total write-in votes went to those candidates. -Reality CheckDespite Mayor Brown’s apparent historic comeback and claims of 16 years of successful Continued Page 5

The Fight for the Right to Vote

Passage of the 15thAmendment

-Part 2 ConclusionIn 2013, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, ruling 5-4 in Shelby v. Holder that it was unconstitutional to require states with a history of voter discrimination to seek federal approval before changing their election laws. In the wake of the Court’s decision, a number of states passed new restrictions on voting, including limiting early voting and requiring voters to show photo ID. Supporters argue such measures are designed to prevent voter fraud, while critics say they—like poll taxes and literacy tests before them— disproportionately affect poor, elderly, Black and Latino voters. During the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election when Stacey Abrams was running, a month before the November midterm, Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State was sued for suppressing minority votes after an Associated Press investigation revealed that his office had not approved 53,000 voter registrations - most of them filed by African Americans. It was an old story in new electoral controversy. Georgia, like many southern states, has suppressed Black votes ever since the 15th Amendment gave African American men the right to vote in 1870. These tactics have simply changed over time.

Harriett Tubman Statue Coming to Niagara Falls. What Happened to Tribute to Frederick Douglass? A statue of freedom fighter Harriett Tubman will be coming to Niagara Falls soon. This past spring the Niagara Falls City Council finally approved funding for the creation of a statue of Tubman, allocating $67,242 in Niagara River Greenway money to cover the local match for a $201,725 state grant. The state allocated that grant money six years ago in 2015. It expired after five years, but Mayor Robert M. Restaino persuaded the state to extend it for a year. The statue will be erected in Harriet Tubman Plaza, outside the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. The museum, which opened in 2018, shares the city's Niagara Falls Amtrak station. Area statues/memorials in honor of Harriett Tubman can currently be found at 4 Henry St, in and St. Catharines, Ontario Canada; at the Freedom Crossing Monument is located on the bank of the Niagara River in Lewiston; and at 22 South Street in downtown Auburn, NY. St . Before the Civil War, Tubman led groups of enslaved Africans to freedom in Canada, including over the old Suspension Bridge in the Falls. She lived much of her adult life in Auburn, where she is buried. Frederick Douglass, another famous black freedom fighter, once said of Tubman that except for John Brown, he knew of "no one who has willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people." -Douglass Next?Interestingly enough, in 2018 Niagara Falls was also planning for a statue of Douglass. The city received $500,000 in Greenway funding from the state, and the Douglass statue was being considered as one of the grant’s projects at a cost of $280,000. But the Black community objected to its proposed placement in front of Police Headquarters on Main Street. "Being that African-Americans,Black and Brown men, are the majority the population in prisons and jail cells today, it's just not a good look," said Donta Myles, a 39-year-old industrial worker who spoke against the location at a City Council meeting. "It's not a good message to send, to place his statue right smack-dab in front of a police station. It's not smart." Some council members were open to moving the location but the statue was ultimately voted down. A push for the statue and a more respectable location has yet to be resumed.

governing, the realities of this city tell yet another story; realities that will take more than 4 more years to remedy. Consider for example: Buffalo has the second-highest child poverty rate among major U.S. cities and the third-highest overall poverty rate according to 2019 Census data. Rents have skyrocketed even as whole neighborhoods of dilapidated and abandoned homes stretch across the city. Basic infrastructure has deteriorated. Food insecurity runs rampant, while low-wage service, retail and care sector jobs dominate the local employment market. Public schools continue to struggle, and the city made national news last year when police assaulted a 75-year-old protester who Mayor Brown referred to as a major agitator. While leaders in nearby Rochester have aggressively tackled lead poisoning, Buffalo maintains one of the highest rates of lead exposure for Children and the East side remains the “hole in the proverbial donut” as it relates to the city’s overall “renaissance.” The struggle continues.

It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over

Garcia Leads By A Slim Margin in Sheriff’s Race. Beaty Refuses to Concede

K

imberly L. Beaty has come too far to give up now. She won the June Democratic Primary for Sheriff of Erie County - making history as the first Black and first woman to do so. She went into the Nov. 2 general election with impressive endorsements and widespread support. And she’s giving her Republican opponent John C. Garcia a run for his money . Garcia, who was endorsed by outgoing Sheriff Timothy B. Howard, was leading Beaty by about 6,000 votes (99,611 to Beaty’s 94,013) after 100% of the election districts reported. But there are still some 19,000 (at this writing absentee ballots that will be counted in the coming days. Beaty, the most qualified candidate in the three-way race, is a retired Deputy Police Commissioner and currently serves as Director of Public Safety at Canisius Collee, her alma mater. “As Deputy Police Commissioner, I managed an annual budget of over $100 million and oversaw over 800 personnel. As Director of Public Safety, I currently manage a law enforcement agency. I am the only candidate for sheriff who can manage the scale of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. It is irresponsible to hand over the reins to someone without experience because there are lives on the line. "We must put a stop to the millions in taxpayer dollars that are being spent settling lawsuits and in mandatory overtime. This starts with making sure that the Sheriff’s Office is properly staffed. I plan to immediately start an aggressive recruitment campaign from within our community to fill our ranks," stated Beaty. . “If there is anyone who has advocated for ‘defunding the police’ it’s the people responsible for the status quo. Sheriff Howard continues to privatize police work and outsource vital security services to private firms such as the one owned by John Garcia! She continued: “716 Security Investigations and its subsidiaries Gallivan, Donovan, and Yarnell (GDY) and Employee Benefit Concepts (EBC) have benefited from almost $300,000 in contracts with Erie County alone since 2015, for work that should be done by union police officers. It’s not about wanting to better the Sheriff’s Office for our community or for the rankand-file deputies. It’s about money. During the election Beaty vowed to reverse 16 years of Republican mismanagement under Tim Howard that has led to dozens of needless inmate deaths and steeped the local jail system in scandal. “Law enforcement has been my career, and more than that, it has been my calling,” said Beaty, after winning the primary.. “My Republican and Conservative opponents want to follow in his (Sheriff Tim Howard) footsteps, which makes our victory on Tuesday, Nov. 2 even more important,” Beaty said.

Poet, Musician and Author Gil Scott-Heron Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as Early Influencer

Photos and Story by A. Dorcely

egendary poet, musician and author Gil Scott-Heron has been inducted posthumously in the “Early Influencer” category among the 2021 class of inductees at the 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, Cleveland, Ohio. Scott-Heron, who died in 2011, was represented by family at the ceremony. “We are thrilled by this honor,” said Rumal Rackley, ScottGil Scott-Heron Heron’s son. The show will air on HBO on November 20th and on additional HBO networks and Sirius XM Radio. The ‘Early Influencer’ category reflects what Gil ScottHeron’s work has and continues to mean to the music industry since his first album was released in 1970.” ScottHeron’s artistic blending of poetry and music was the precursor to rap. His crucial voice of protest deeply influenced black music across genres, especially hip-hop. He is most famous for the iconic political protest song “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” released in 1971, which became an anthem for activists for equality and police reform in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.

The End Of Summer Vibes and Celebration of Liberation

I

n September, the last Friday of the Summer, Seneca Casino gave us one last shindig with the likes of Vanilla Ice, Bobby Brown, Blackstreet, All4-One and last but not least Kool Moe Dee for their Hip Hop and Harmony tour. This event seemed like a celebration of liberation. With students back in school and fall sports back in play a party seemed like the proverbial cream on the cake. A pretty good gamble for most at this Casino. Even I was officially “outside” amongst many old school Hip Hop and R&B fans. Of course I was masked up with a bit of nervous energy. But this maybe energy that we all carry with us for a time going forward. Before I go on I would like to take this time to wish continued health and strength to you all as we continue to fight for the past we knew not too long ago without the fear of a cough or a sneeze. Now where was I. Oh yeah, it was a cool Summer night with a Waxing Gibbous moon(Google it) lighting the sky.

Pictured top then l/r Blackstreet kept it grown and sexy and owned the city with a commanding performance, Vanilla Ice was ice cold with his crowd contro and Bobby Brown withenergetic back up dancers moving the crowd and Brown with his son Landon after their surprise duet.

L

The crowd was healthy but not overly crowding. The music was familiar to the concert goers. Sprinkled within the spectators were those I call the “Instant Generation.” I’m not sure how much music they recalled from Kool Moe Dee and All-4-One. But if their parents were from the “Wild Wild West”; “I Swear” they had some knowledge of what they were listening to. BlackStreet definitely did their thing “No Diggity” as they handed out Roses to some of the female attendees. The King of R&B, Bobby Brown made the women swoon to Roni while at the same time making it his “Prerogative” to bring his first born son front and center for a duet. Brown mentioned how nervous Landon Brown was. His son is also his backup singer. Vanilla Ice, the “Funky” White boy made sure to bring the heat as he closed out the show in the coldest way. He invited several people up to the stage to dance to his biggest hit to date. If you don’t know what that is this concert wouldn’t have been your vibe. Lucky for you, you were young then. Unlucky for you, you missed out on the 90s, what’s considered by many the Golden Era of Hip Hop which will always be music that future generations try to duplicate for more summers to come!

112 Year Old Vet is Oldest Living Man in America and About 40 Louisiana Dads Formed a Group to Prevent Oldest Living WW II Veteran

DADS ON DUTY!

Violence at a Local High School–and It's WorkingSince the "Dads on Duty" formed, there have been no reports of fights at Southwood High

By J.L. Cook THE ROOT...If a father knows best, imagine what happens when about 40 dads come together to help curb violence at the high school their kids attend. The result, as CBS News reports, is “Dads on Duty”– a group that formed in the wake of 23 students being arrested after several fights at Southwood High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Their mission is to create a more positive environment within the school to dissuade fighting and encourage learning. Donning red shirts with the name of the group emblazoned on them, the Dads on Duty take shifts hanging out at the school and interacting with the students. Since the group formed, no incidents have been reported at the school. More from CBS News: And though none of the dads have degrees in school counseling or criminal justice, they do have some relevant experience. “We’re dads. We decided the best people who can take care of our kids are who? Are us,” Michael LaFitte, who started Dads on Duty, said. Now, any negative energy that enters the building has to run the gauntlet of good parenting. “I immediately felt a form of safety,” one of the students said. “We stopped fighting; people started going to class.” Students at Southwood told CBS that the Dads on Duty bring plenty of firm looks and warnings that dads are known to give and endless corny jokes: “They just make funny jokes like, ‘Oh, hey, your shoe is untied,’ but it’s really not untied,” a student commented. “They hate it! They’re so embarrassed by it,” LaFitte said of the students. And it’s that perfect mix of tough love and gentle ribbing that dads do so well that has helped transform this school. “The school has just been happy — and you can feel it,” a student said. And now the dads plan to keep going to Southwood indefinitely. “Because not everybody has a father figure at home – or a male, period, in their life. So just to be here makes a big difference,” the dads said. Southwood students aren’t the only ones who have appreciated the efforts of the Dads on Duty. The group and its impact have also been widely praised on social media. You love to see it!

“Knowing when to stop, you can avoid any danger.” -Tao Te Ching

Lawrence Brooks, of New Orleans, Louisiana, celebrated his 112th Birthday on September 12. Mr. Brooks, the oldest living man in America and also the oldest living World War II Veteran, served in the US Army from 1940-1945 during world War II in the mostly Black 91st Engineer General Service Regiment. He never had a combat job, a legacy of racist policies that relegated many Black soldiers to service-oriented jobs in the then-segregated U.S. Army.

NATIONAL ELECTIONS UPDATE

Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor’s race, CNN projects, becoming the first Republican to win statewide office there since 2009. The race was the centerpiece of a slew of local and state elections yesterday, and Youngkin’s victory could portend serious problems for Democrats heading into next year’s midterms. Republicans, meanwhile, are looking to Youngkin’s winning strategy -- especially how he mobilized supporters of former President Trump without alienating suburban voters who are less enamored of him -- as a way to possibly approach other contests. Across the country, other results are rolling in. The New Jersey governor’s race is still too close to call, marking another sobering result for Dems who thought they had the race in the bag. Voters in Minneapolis also rejected the possibility of widespread police reform spurred by the 2020 death of George Floyd.

The Buffalo Bills organization and Bills Mafia had two weeks to ponder on the heartbreaking loss in Tennessee on Sunday Night Football as the Titans defeated the Buffalo Bills 34-31. Offense and defensive playcalling would be the Bills demise in the fourth quarter. Now that we got the recap out of the way, the Bills on Sunday would walk into Highmark Stadium ready to squish the fish as the Dolphins came into town. But were the Bills really ready to squish the fish as the first half of football in this game was quite dismal. The Buffalo Bills offense look like the Buffalo Bills offense in week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers as they struggled to put points on the board. It's a good thing that they were playing the Miami Dolphins who couldn't capitalize on opportunities that they had in the first half to take a lead into halftime. How many people would have guessed that only six points would have been scored in the first half after the bills had two weeks to prepare for the Dolphins after a heartbreaking loss? I'm sure no one had that thought in mind at all but in the second half the Buffalo Bills did what the Buffalo Bills have done majority of the season which is make pretty good adjustments. Josh Allen would account for three touchdowns in the game two passing and one on the ground as the Buffalo Bills would go on to defeat the Miami Dolphins for the 6th straight time 26-11. Cole Beasley was a shining star in this one as he had 11 catches for 110 yards. Some social media outlets had Cole Beasley as a player who could have been traded before the deadline. The defense was stellar as usual as Star Lotulelei and Ed Oliver had their best games of the season. Will the Bills continue to build off this past weeks win over the Dolphins?

UB Bulls Football News Well they're hot then they're cold there yesterday they're know there and then they're out there up then they're down they're wrong then they're right...... in the words of Katy Perry this is a summary of what the UB Bulls football has been. Let's all be mindful that this is Maurice Linguist's first season as the a head coach. There will be some good times and some hard times as the Bulls took it on the chin this past Saturday in a 56-44 loss to Bowling Green. Dylan McDuffie was a shining star in the loss as he rushed for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns. Matt Myers also stepped in for Kyle Vantrease and ran for two touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass but the defense did nothing to help this high-powered offense. The Bulls were a 13.5 point favorite but look like the team tried to catch up the whole game as Matt McDonald threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns. UB will go back to the drawing board to see if they can even their season out as they play Miami of Ohio on Tuesday. Can the UB Bulls get back to winning ways?

Buffalo Sabres Hockey The Buffalo Sabres look very impressive as they drowned the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4 to 3 in overtime last Thursday. Rasmus Asplund was a force as the 23 year-old from Sweden scored two goals in the win. Victor Olofsson also scored. Rasmus, Victor and Tage Thompson have accounted for almost half of the Sabres goals this season as they have collectively scored 11 goals out of the 24. On Halloween things became a little scary as the Sabres blue a 2-1 lead and ended up losing 3-2 to the LA Kings. Rasmus Asplund and Victor Olofsson would score yet again in this game. But the Sabres would give up two third-period goals as the Slovene veteran Anže Kopitar would light the lamp. Alex Lafallo, the buffalo native would cap off the rally with the game winner. The Sabres will face the San Jose Sharks and the Seattle Kraken to finish off their West Coast Road Trip. The Sabres will be back at KeyBank Center on November 6th to face the Detroit Red Wings. The Sabres are currently 5-2-1. Will the Sabres be able to bounce back from the loss in LA? For more sports talk and news follow me on Facebook @Andre Robinson or D'Andre Torch Robinson. Can We All Just Get Along? Urgent: Buffalo Public School Student Transportation - A Crisis We Can No Longer Ignore! I am writing in support of a wonderful and vigilant community Organization in Buffalo (NY) called "We The Parents", which is co-chaired by longtime Upstate Western New York community activist Samuel Radford. Mr. Radford, is also the past president of District Parent Coordinating Council [DPCC}, another pro-parent/pro-student Issues support network component and Concern. I, myself, am the Special Projects Facilitator at We Are Women Warriors, which is yet another community-focused Organization targeting quality-of-life Issues impacting the minority community in Buffalo, and in Erie County. The Warriors Organization is (also) based in Buffalo. What has driven us to reach out in advocacy, is the current crisis taking place in Buffalo, in which upwards of 500 students EACH AND EVERY SCHOOL DAY, are not being picked up and driven to school by the student transportation contractor currently charged with the provision of that crucial public service. It is a given that when those "neglected" students are left standing at their assigned bus stops each and every day, their parents must then find the ways and means to get their child//children to those pupils' educational institutions. This is a disaster circumstance that must need be addressed and resolved, and quickly! If the U.S. State Of New York must deploy this State's National Guard servicemen and servicewomen, to effectively solve this dilemma, Governor Kathy Hochul needs to take the necessary steps to do so. A significant number of inner-city Buffalo households, who are the families most impacted by this unforeseen problem that they themselves did not cause, are very low-tomoderate income. These parent-individuals can ill afford to risk arriving late to their jobs due to having to suddenly and necessarily become student transportation designees. Moreover, many of these parents lack a private vehicle and they (then) have to resort to utilizing public transit. The fact of the overarching problem being further exacerbated by the latter reality is both undeniable and obvious. The Issue of the problematic performance and implementation of Buffalo Public School Student Transportation should be at the top of this community's Quality-Of-Life Issues Agenda. Parents in the City Of Buffalo need the assistance of our governor, at this very urgent time! The We Are Women Warriors Organization stands in support of these families, and we stand in support of the diligent community-focused Organization(s) serving them. What is needed, right now, is for City Of Buffalo residents, and, indeed, residents of Erie County, to contact New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, in support of the parents of Buffalo Public School students. Please call (at Extension 1) or write our governor, at the following points-of-contact. Thank you: Contact By Phone: (518) 474-8390 | Office hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm Contact By Mail: The Honorable Kathy Hochul Governor of New York State, NYS State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224.

The Votes are In and Council President Pridgen Calls for Peace and Calm in the Community

Common Council President Darius Pridgen exhibited true leadership a few days before the election when he acknowledged the divisive, negative nature of this year’s mayoral election between Mayor Brown and India Walton and called on the community to stay calm. Councilmember Pridgen, who is also Pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church, also noted President Pridgen that he did not endorse either candidate in the election, and allowed both to display their campaign signs on his private property. He told the News that in his opinion the race had “horribly divided” this community at times. He made it clear, and we agree, that the sky will not fall no matter who wins. Now that the election is over his call for calm holds even more urgency in a neglected, shortchanged community that still has a lot of issues to resolve.

mind, which is most indicative of the majority of the Executive Staff of RCSD, who spout the rhetoric of Black independence, but whose practice represents the mentality of the colonizer in Black face. This neo-colonial mentality is what we are struggling against, and the task can prove to be daunting, but one in which we can not afford to quit, our children's future depends on us not quitting nor compromising on demanding what our children deserve. The task before us is to create the means and mechanism to make RCSD transparent and accountable to the community, and ensure the Village is included in any decision-making process that affects the growth and development of our students. A Mayoral Win And A Community's Loss

T

his writer believes that if there had not been a Write In campaign, Kimberly Beaty would have won the Erie County Sheriff's race. When one team is only focusing on the Write In or Stamp In campaign and are only advising the voters to focus on one candidate, the other candidates in the community lose. Buffalo, being divided in the mayor's race, caused Erie County to miss electing the very best sheriff's candidate we will ever have. And Byron Brown's failure to endorse Kim publicly, sent a dog whistle to his supporters and also to Garcia's people, especially when literature was passed out that showed Garcia and Brown together. It is no secret that South Buffalo went overwhelmingly to Byron Brown. South Buffalo has a heavy enrollment of Democratic voters. I don't t have to see the ballots to know that they also went 'hard' for Garcia. I am sad about India's loss in the mayor's race but sadly, the fearmongering the Brown campaign directed against the Walton campaign found its way into the suburbs by supporters of John Garcia and Stefan Mychajliw. We saw political ads calling Kim a radical socialist when in fact, she is more conservative than most people I know. Byron Brown's intent might have been to demonize India but in the process, White supremacists used those Brown political ads to destroy Kimberly's chance to win the election last night. And even with all the attack ads and a Black newspaper columnist calling Ms. Walton a Hood Rat in his article, India Walton still managed to win the majority of voters Buffalo's east and west sides and the young and Latino voters! I want to thank former NYS Senator Antoine Thompson. His expert leadership in the waning days of the campaign had a tremendous positive impact on India's winning in Byron Brown's home turf and Masten District base. However, the Brown campaign's win at any cost, write in effort, was successful as Byron Brown was re-elected. I also want to thank the courageous, local and national elected officials, who put principle over politics and did the right thing in this very contentious election. But at what cost did we pay to appease his vanity and self interest? I say the price we paid is a divided community, the loss of a chance to elect a great sheriff and the empowerment of White supremacists and racists in Buffalo and Erie County, for years to come. Tuesday t night was not just the loss of a mayor's election or a sheriff's race, it was the validation of a process where winning is everything regardless of the means or methods used to achieve that win. It is indeed a sad day for Buffalo and for Erie County.

Plans For Educational Reform In How Black History Is Taught In America NEWSONE --According to the New York Post, City schools Chancellor Meisha Ross-Porter introduced the new Black studies curriculum Wednesday at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Manhattan. “If we’re serious about addressing racial justice, we have to look at what our students learn every day,” Porter said while joined at the center by city legislators, academics, and nonprofit organizers. “And not just Black children, but all children.” “Our children have to see and experience themselves every single day in the curriculum,” she continued. “They have to see their value and worth because they have seen so many other messages that say different.” The main focus of the new curriculum appears to be creating a departure from the Black history we’ve traditionally been taught in K-12 schools, which, for the most part, begins with slavery and ends with Martin Luther King Jr. “Why did I have to go to the movies to learn that Black women played a significant role putting America on the moon,” Black Edfluencers United President Shango Blake rhetorically asked during the meeting. “Why didn’t I learn that at school?

Qualified Immunity

The Supreme Court in two

cases recently ruled in favor of police officers seeking qualified immunity from allegations of excessive force. Qualified immunity is a controversial legal doctrine that shields law enforcement from liability for some constitutional violations. It’s been a contested issue as communities have reexamined policing practices over the last year and a half. The qualified immunity debate has also stalled federal-level attempts at broad police reform legislation. The court’s decisions show that it’s not willing, at least for now, to radically transform how it considers qualified

immunity cases. LEGAL NOTICE

continued from page 2 your ‘ A ‘game every week.” The Bills defense continues to play well with safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde leading the way. Jordan Poyer is really having an outstanding season and his overall play this season is his best as a Buffalo Bill. He has overcome alcoholism to not only improve his way of life for his family but also his professional career. My hat is off to Jordan Poyer for doing what a real MAN has to do, take order of his life and make a change for the betterment of himself and family. I still would like to see more of Boogied Basham in the lineup and Ed Oliver is starting to come around after being moved along the defensive front. Oliver to me can become an excellent Edge Rusher with his quick feet and explosiveness if given the opportunity. The Bills travel to Northern Florida to play the Jacksonville Jaguars and rookie QB Trevor Lawrence. Bills defense should be able to bait Lawrence into throwing interceptions and the offensive unit must run the ball effectively against a decent Jaguars unit. Prediction: Bills 28 to 10.
