Legislator Baskin Is Fighting Hard To Have Holding Center Investigated

A

pril Baskin has repeatedly called on Attorney General Barbara Underwood to investigate the death of India Cummings at the Erie County Holding Center and the Attorney General has said that she would investigate but has repeatedly pushed back the date. This is on track to be Richard Metcalf all over again ! Metcalf was another Holding Center inmate who died in 2012.All total there have been 24 inmate deaths under Sheriff Howard's tenure. Legislator Baskin held a press conference last Friday to demand an immediate investigation. Her message: We will not accept this repeated violation of human rights and disregard for life any longer! Majority Leader Baskin is proposing a law to establish a permanent Corrections Specialist Advisory Board. At one time the Sheriff’s Department had such a board to protect inmates from neglect and mistreatment, but it died a natural death after a Republican supported majority took control of the Legislature four years ago. Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn Jr. has said he thinks the Attorney General’s office or a special prosecutor should investigate Cumming’s death. A conflict of interest, he said, prevents his office from conducting an investigation.

ctober means it is time again for the City Of Buffalo’s annual in rem auction of properties in default of back taxes. On Thursday, August 30th, the Buffalo Information Sharing Collective held a free public information session at Burning Books on Connecticut Street to give individuals who wish to participate in this year’s auction important background information. B.I.S.C. is a loosely formed group of people with individual expertise in a variety of fields such as credit and banking, real estate, building and remodeling, and just about any other topics Buffalonians might need help with. “We live in the age of the internet,” said the group’s point man Ahmad Nieves. “So much is coming over, we don’t know what’s real and what is not real and can be easily overwhelmed. To move forward as a society we need to share our resources, and one of those resources is information.” Ahmad owns six pieces of property that he has bought through the city’s auction in past years. The first step is to go to BuffaloNY.gov/839/Inrem51-Foreclosure-Listings on your computer. This list is frequently updated as properties become available. Make your own list of several properties you might wish to target. Secondly, drive by and visit those parcels. Ahmad’s brother, Ayat Nieves of Red Door Real Estate WNY, said this is a crucial piece of homework not to be missed. Tread with caution though. Seemingly abandoned lots are still private property, and standard laws about trespassing still apply. Third, find out which tax district each of your targeted properties falls in. Tax districts 1 through 5 are auctioned on the first day (Friday 10/15), districts 6 through 10 on the second day (10/16), and 11 through 14 on the last (10/17). Next, secure your monies for purchasing way ahead of time. On the day of the auction buyers are expected to put down a deposit of 20% or $500, whichever number is greater. The rest--plus an additional $325 filing fee--is due by mid-December. Failure to pay in full by that date puts the property back into the city’s pool, and the bidder forfeits their deposit. Some Things To Keep In Mind Ahmad warned those who bid beyond what they are ready to put down immediately will be politely escorted away by uniformed officials and barred from returning to future auctions. It used to be a common practice that cagey agents would overbid on desirable properties knowing that when they failed to come up with the deposit during the break, the property would be available again later that day at a steal once competing bidShow up armed with made ders had unwittingly left. A useful bit of information to keep in mind facts (and cash) on should you lose a property you had your heart set on to another bidthe weekend of Oc- der. If you can spare the time, wait around a little in a last ditch effort if circumstances play out such that it becomes available again. tober 15, 16, and to see It is important to understand that until the auctioneer opens her 17 at the Buffalo mouth to announce a particular lot, the current owner still has the Niagara Convention right to clear the back debt or negotiate a new settlement with the Surprisingly, this actually does happen quite often. That’s one of Center, 153 Franklin city. the reasons you should have several properties in mind going in. The Street, at 9am! availability list printed even that morning is not set in stone. If you are a party on the unpleasant end of this transaction, meaning yours is the property being sold, you have a horse in this race too. Every penny beyond your arrears to the city belongs in a check coming back to you. Yes, you heard correctly. That can mean having your debt wiped out, and a few dollars to make a new start. Many people are unaware of this, and that surplus money languishes in the N.Y. State pot of unclaimed funds. Contact the WNY Law Center to find out how to turn this windfall into real money for you. The bidding starts at $500 for vacant lots, $1,000 for lots with homes. It used to be the case that one could easily expect to walk away with a sweetheart deal, but not anymore. Word of Buffalo as a city on the “come-up” has spread and out of town, even foreign, investors come to these auctions with deep pockets ready to lay cash on the barrelhead. Reports from last year’s event said many potential individual homesteaders left outbid and scratching their heads. Ahmad put forth that even buying just a vacant lot is a smart investment at this time “because it’s better in your hands than in some developer’s”. The popularity of urban farming can make that lot an income generator sooner than you think. Local supermarkets such as Lexington Co-op, and especially juice bars like Ashker’s on Elmwood, are very progressive about cooperating with and purchasing from local independant produce growers on a regular basis. Crops like kale, swiss chard and other greens are in high demand. Burning Books’ facility was standing-room-only for this evening’s presentation. Store owners Leslie Pickering and his wife Theresa bought this location at auction themselves in 2008 for a modest price. The savings on the property “has been a vital element of our business model,” said Leslie. “Because we got it at such a reasonable price, it has enabled us to make space for more arts and cultural events,” instead of only sponsoring those immediately contributing to a pending mortgage payment. You are now ready to show up armed with facts (and cash) on the weekend of October 15th, 16th, and 17th at downtown’s Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, 153 Franklin Street, at 9am. Parking is always a challenge in this part of town so be sure to time yourself accordingly and bring lots of quarters. Check the B.I.S.C. Facebook page for future info sessions, also in the Somali and Spanish languages, preceding October 15th.

BLACK HISTORY STUDIES... Part 2

8. The ancient Egyptian city of Kahun was the world’s first planned city. Rectangular and walled, the city was divided into two parts. One part housed the wealthier inhabitants – the scribes, officials and foremen. The other part housed the ordinary people. The streets of the western section in particular, were straight, laid out on a grid, and crossed each other at right angles. A stone gutter, over half a metre wide, ran down the center of every street. 9. Toilets and sewerage systems existed in ancient Egypt. 10 . Sudan has more pyramids than any other country on earth – even more than Egypt. 11. Bling culture has a long and interesting history. Gold was used to decorate ancient Sudanese temples. 12. In around 300 BC, the Sudanese invented a writing script that had twenty-three letters of which four were vowels and there was also a word divider. Hundreds of ancient texts have survived that were in this script. Some are on display in the British Museum. 13. In central Nigeria, West Africa’s oldest civilization flourished between 1000 BC and 300 BC. Discovered in 1928, the ancient culture was called the Nok Civilization, named after the village in which the early artefacts were discovered. 14. West Africans built in stone by 1100 BC. 16. By 250 BC, the foundations of West Africa’s oldest cities were established such as Old Djenné in Mali. 17. Kumbi Saleh, the capital of Ancient Ghana, flourished from 300 to 1240 AD. Located in modern day Mauritania, archaeological excavations have revealed houses, almost habitable today, for want of renovation and several stories high. “Our

history did not begin in chains. It will not end in chains.”

National/International How Senegal And Its Astronomers Are Helping NASA’s New Horizons Program Make Discoveries in Space By Jaime Yaya Barry & Dionne Searcey via nytimes.com

DAKAR, Senegal — When Salma Sylla was a little girl, she tried to find relief from Senegal’s steamy hot season by retreating to the roof of her home to sleep. Restless and overheated, she would lie awake staring at the stars. The area where she lived outside Dakar, the capital, had no electricity, and the heavens sparkled. She tried to count the stars, realizing more shone on some nights than on others. Ms. Sylla, now 37, was intrigued. But studying the stars in Senegal was not easy: High school courses were limited; libraries rarely had books on space; telescopes were few and expensive. Not much has improved since Ms. Sylla was a girl; astronomy offerings are extremely limited in Senegal’s universities. But officials

here hope to change that, as part of a mission to improve science, technology, engineering and math skills by bolstering the country’s university programs and building a science and research center. The undertaking is part of “Emerging Senegal,” a broad development strategy by President Macky Sall that also includes plans for a planetarium. The effort got a lift recently, when Senegal welcomed a team of more than three dozen scientists from the United States and France, part of NASA’s New Horizons program. The scientists fanned out across the countryside in hopes of observing the silhouette cast by an ancient chunk of rock orbiting beyond Pluto as it passed in front of a bright star. The viewing was intended to help the team prepare for when the plutonium-powered

New Horizons spacecraft passes by the object — nicknamed Ultima Thule (Beyond the Known World) — on New Year’s Eve. “This is the farthest exploration of anything in space that has ever taken place, by quite a lot,” said Alan Stern, project leader for NASA’s New Horizons mission. “We are way, way out there.” For the scientists, coming to Senegal was a process of elimination. Most of the areas that offered the best viewing were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The other options — in neighboring Mali, for example — were in areas patrolled by violent extremists. The countryside of Senegal is peaceful, parts of it do not have electricity, and many rural areas are sparsely populated. That was a bonus for the scientists, who wanted a clear sky, free of light. Still, Senegal was a risky proposition. The area is on the cusp of the rainy season, and cloudy skies threatened to block the event, which occurred early Saturday and lasted less than a second. Scientists are still evaluating Contiued Page11

MVP Prayer for Peace Rally Highlights Courage, Caring and Commitment

A

ll of the seats under the huge white revivaltype tent on the corner of Fillmore and Jewett Parkway were filled to capacity last Sunday afternoon. The occasion was a “Prayer for Peace Rally” hosted by the Most Valuable Parents organization (MVP) to cap their six-week presence in the Central Park area in the wake of multiple shootings. MVP was there organizing and recruiting parents, posting peace signs and engaging the young men in the community. The group’s prayer rallies are rooted in Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Bishop T. Anthony Bronner of Elim Christian Fellowship and the Elim Church family opened its doors to the young organization to meet during their stay in the area. Addressing the rally on the importance of unity, Bishop Bronner's words were uplifting, direct and instructive. “If we are interested, invested and involved” with our chil-

dren, he taught, we will see a great and positive outcome. But we have to show unity and collaboration with one another in order for God, “who is always on ready” to make himself appear. “MVP is so very important because it gives us a sense of unity,” he continued (and) “unity means peace…this is mind-blowing for the enemy.” He expressed hope that such a gathering and movement would be ongoing. MVP founder Neal Dobbins shared a story of courage that riveted the audience. Arriving home recently he saw a young woman chastising some young boys on his street. He thought at first it was just a domestic argument. But when he heard the word “gun” he decided to investigate. “She was going in…she was letting them have it” he said, “and she is pregnant!” Her concern was that the boys were shooting in the neighborhood around the children. “She showed no fear” recalled Neal. When she identified the youth she believed had the gun, Neal approached him and asked him to turn it over. He gave it up without a problem.

But a 17 year old who arrived on the scene claimed the gun was his. “He had this kind of ‘I don’t care if I live or die attitude’ " Neal recalled. He said he engaged the youth in conversation and offered to take him to get something to eat. Their conversation continued. A lot was revealed. Neal offered advice. They exchanged contact information, and in the end the youth broke down and thanked him for taking the gun and sparing him from “getting into trouble.” That single act may well have saved a life. “We can’t expect the community to change and we remain the same,’ Pastor Anthony Brown offered. And the blame can’t all be placed on the youth caught up in these cycles of violence. “We have to ask forgiveness of our own sins…not just these young brothers and sisters. We have to take a full examination of ourselves to see if we’re fit for the race” he declared to shouts of approval. “If we don’t fit – then step aside! “We’ve been poor saints,” he concluded. “But if we ever get on one accord, under the spirit of oneness…we will

HAPPY 92ND BIRTHDAY COLTRANE! Burchfield Penney and Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective co-present Annual Three-Day Jazz Festival by Renata Toney The musical virtuosity and global appeal of John Coltrane continues to top music charts 51 years after his death. When Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album was released June 29, 2018, it soared to 21 on the Billboard 200, his highest charting ever. The studio album was cut by the classic John Coltrane Quartet in 1963 two years before A Love Supreme. It was then stashed away, lost for years. The Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective and Burchfield Penney Art Center will celebrate the perpetual jazz form of the colossus saxophonist at its annual three-day John Coltrane Birthday Celebration September 20 – 22, 2018. This year’s headliners are Rob Dixon with the George Caldwell Trio; and Gary Bartz accompanied by the Curtis Lundy Trio. The multitalented line-up of conversations, performances and screenings include: Thursday, September 20 - 7 PM Lecture / Discussion - Chas With Jazz: At the BON TON Jazz Club with Charles Mancuso accompanied by pianist George Caldwell The legendary Bon Ton, formerly located at East Ferry and Waverly streets, was a leading jazz club in the early 1960s. Chuck Mancuso, SUNY Buffalo State professor and jazz aficionado, will present a talk on the iconic night club accompanied by Grammy Award-winning pianist George Caldwell playing the sounds of Bon Ton jazz. Friday, Sept. 21, 201 -8 p.m. Rob Dixon with the George Caldwell Trio / Guest appearances by Ahmad Pleasant and Amari McDade Nationally recognized saxophonist Rob Dixon has worked with Illinois Jacquet, Ali from A Tribe Called Quest, Count Basie band, Rufus Reid, composer Bill Lee (Spike Lee’s father), Jonah Jones and Mike Clark’s “Indigo Blue.” Fully tenured jazz piano legend George Caldwell presided over the ivory 88s for the Count Basie Orchestra winning a “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance” Grammy in 1996. He is also instrumental in co-organizing the annual John Coltrane celebration at the Burchfield Penney. Saxophonist Ahmad Pleasant coveted 1st place prize in the 2018 Buffalo's Got Talent competition; Amari McDade is a vocal major at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Per-

Represent Yourself and Respect Yourself ! (because no one else will...)

dds are, if you’re reading this in the Challenger News, you’re a voter in the 63rd State Senate District and chances are you respect your right to vote and you want your vote respected. Your vote has a lot of value. It wasn’t that long ago when our nation had a Black President, Barrack Obama, our state had a Black Governor, David Paterson, our State Senator was Antoine Thompson and our City Mayor Byron Brown. Each of them deserved their offices and deserved each vote that was cast for them. But now times have changed drastically, and changed for the worse. It doesn’t have to be that way, but only you can change it, and only if you’ll “put down the remote and go out and vote” tomorrow (Thursday, September 13, 2018). Shaqurah Zackery, an African-American attorney is running for the New York State Senate, bringing new hope and intelligence to a state government that is filled with corrupt officials. Not surprisingly, corrupt political officials hate her for it. According to the Buffalo News last Wednesday, Zackery’s opponent is now spending $10,000 a day to defend himself from her campaign. That’s $70,000 a week for a job that doesn’t pay $70,000 a year? Zackery’s opponent claims in multiple mailers and television commercials that he accomplished a lot. While the truth is just the opposite. He didn’t accomplish anything. That’s because he couldn’t. It wasn’t his fault. He’s a Democrat in the New York State Senate and they have little say in what happens in government. It's just as bad for Republicans in the New York State Assembly where they have no say. Nothing says dishonest like the New York State of Corruption and it’s politricking time. This week, The Public, another large weekly newspaper endorsed Shaqurah Zackery. According to The Public’s Endorsement Page “Since the beginning of the year, Zackery’s opponent has spent almost $393,000. Why so much money? There are no public polls out there, but presumably Tim Kennedy feels as vulnerable as he did when Betty Jean Grant nearly beat him in a previous primary challenge, despite, like Zachery, having little money and little campaign organization. Privately activists and labor leaders say the same thing... they don’t trust Tim Kennedy. According to The Public “Maybe it’s the brand he will always wear in political circles for caucusing with Republicans while a county legislator to deliver then Erie County Executive Chris Collins a majority. Maybe it’s his cozy relationship with Ralph Lorigo and the Erie County Conservative Party, or with the two Steves, Pigeon and Casey, who used to wield considerable political power in this town before they were sidelined by criminal investigations. Maybe it’s the uncomfortable suspicion that anyone who takes in so much campaign cash must be selling something. Zachery is a solid Democrat, a woman, and an African American; this region could use more of all three in the state Senate.”

We The People Petition Campaign To Replace MLK Monument Update: 4,161 Signatures and Counting!

Dear Editor: This is a public update on the progress of the Coalition to Save MLK Park. The petition campaign is pleading for the removal of the image on exhibit in MLK Park, that deliberately or negligently alters the image of the great American Rev. Dr. King Jr. We are petitioning for the immediate removal and replacement. It never did look like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. since the 1983 unveiling of which I was among many who witnessed it. It has been 35 years that disgraced image has been sitting in MLK Park on Buffalo’s Eastside. There are those who would say that the statue was never supposed to look like Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. It was supposed to represent a symbolic African. Rev. King was born in Alabama on American soil as a Black man not an African. Enough of symbolism we want realism. In 1982 I donated $100 of my hard earned money at St. John Baptist Church. The late Rev. Bennett Smith and Mr. Clifford Bell, was asking those of us who were present for donations to build a statue of Rev. King Jr.; one which even Stevie Wonder would look at the statue and say in front of everyone that it looks like Dr. King. It’s important that I share a conversation I had with our esteemed Assemblywoman. We were outside of WUFO radio station and I explained to her the concern of the We The People Petition Campaign was to collect 10,000 names of residents who live in Erie County, City of Buffalo and the State of New York, who would like to remove the distorted image that does not look like Rev. Dr. King Jr. Her response: “I don’t care if you get 10,000, 15,000 or 50,000 signatures that Black head is not going anywhere.” I advised her that I would be letting my listening audience know on my radio show and the public would know. I also advised her that the state has nothing to do with this issue and that the black head is the property of the City of Buffalo. The recent update on the lack of responses of the 85 Black churches that were sent letters on June 1st is that as of September 9th only five churches have responded. I’m praying that members will ask their pastors if they have the petition and if they can have members sign them. On the brighter side as of September 9th the Coalition to Save MLK Park petition drive has collected on paper 4,161, names in support of correcting that wrong. I want to thank those who helped in the circulation and signing. We are seven months into the first phase. I need help in carrying our petitions .We have to reach over our goal of 10,000 signatures by Rev. Dr. King’s next national holiday in 2019. For more information contact this writer, chairman of the coalition to save MLK Park at 716-560-4692. -Samuel A. Herbert

SPOKEN WORD... HRU By Maati Ka Ra Thoughts are things Outside our crown, Knowing if you let them in, You become with them as one. But thoughts are things Of varying degrees And if you choose wisely You ultimately get to see Your Paradise… So let us be like Heru Whose thoughts were so high He blended with the sky.

SENEGALESE ASTRONOMERS continued data from the viewing, but the skies turned out to be clear and they are hopeful. Senegal was an enthusiastic host. About two dozen Senegalese astronomers and scientists, including Ms. Sylla, accompanied the New Horizons team in the field and contributed to the viewing. African countries have racked up their own space achievements. Moroccan astronomers have discovered comets, asteroids and planets outside our solar system. Ghana’s first satellite is now orbiting the earth. Students in Tunisia have organized public events to observe the sky, even though they do not have an observatory. “Astronomy is virtually as popular in Africa as it is everywhere in the world,” said David Baratoux, the president of the African Initiative for Planetary Sciences and Space, who is based in France. The biggest hindrance is money. The United States spends more on its space program than the value of Senegal’s entire economy. The 21 high-powered telescopes brought by the New Horizons team were nearly double the number of telescopes available in all of Senegal.

Beyond Politricks: Why Shaqurah Zackery’s Candidacy Matters

O

n the eve of Primary Election Day, Thursday, September 13, we join our progressive friends, conscientious people of color, and independent thinkers and visionaries, in proudly endorsing Shaqurah Zackery for New York State Senator in the 63rd District.

Aside from her impressive credentials as an educator and attorney who has fought on behalf of families and children, our seniors and civil rights for over 15 years, Attorney Zackery stands on the right side of history. It is important that the community stand with this intelligent and capable young woman by going to the polls and voting 10-A. Regardless of the outcome, Shaqurah Zackery is a winner because she dared to step to the plate to lay claim to a much sought after state senate seat – following in the footsteps of the likes of Arthur O. Eve, Frank Mesiah, Richard Clark, Ted Kirkland, David Collins, Eddie Herndon, and the interminable Betty Jean Grant who lost the Primary by a mere 300-plus votes in 2012. Only two African Americans have ever been elected to serve in the state senate from Buffalo – current Mayor Byron Brown and former State Senator Antoine Thompson. Today we have no Blacks in the New York State senate representing upstate. There are no African Americans in this exclusive Albany club from Buffalo, Rochester or Syracuse. This is 2018. Not 1820! Attorney /educator Shaqurah Zackery is on a mission to change that. She is seeking to make history by becoming the first Black woman to serve in the New York State’s 63rd Senate district. She slipped quietly under the political radar and successfully got on the ballot. Not an easy task and a notable feat – especially for a first time candidate. Proving that she is not afraid to speak up and speak out, since announcing her candidacy she has called on Gov. Cuomo to “exercise his gubernatorial authority” and remove Sheriff Tim “24-deaths-under-his watch” Howard. We admire her conscientiousness and her commitment to her community. Incumbent Senator Kennedy has spent tons of money - $10,000 a day at last count – to retain his seat. He has the endorsement and support from the area’s two leading Black elected officials, Mayor Byron Brown and Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples Stokes as well as a host of other respected community and religious leaders. And while we respect their choice, we must remind voters that there is a movement going on – a positive, energizing, transformative wave and Shaqurah Zachery is part of it. According to Blackwomeninpolitics.com over 400 Black women are running for federal, state, and local office in 2018, including Representative Maxine Waters, who is running for reelection in California, Stacey Abrams who is running for governor of Georgia and the first Black woman ever elected governor in the United States, Lauren Underwood who is running for Congress in Illinois and Ayanna Pressley’s recent upset victory that jolted the political order in Boston when she won a surprise victory in the Massachusetts Democratic primary for Congress just weeks ago. Buffalo’s own rising political star Leecia Eve is running an impressive race for State Attorney General. And in June, 28-year-old Latina activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat New York’s most powerful congressional representative. She is poised to become the youngest US Congresswoman ever elected. A vote for Shaquara Zackery will be a vote for history. A vote for Independence. A vote that says Black folks in Buffalo are tired of the plantation politricks that has had this community in its grip for far too long. It’s time to do something new and fresh and different. It’s time for us to catch the wave. Nothing will change until we do! VOTE FOR A NEW DAY! VOTE FOR CHANGE! VOTE FOR: SHAQURAH ZACHERY, STATE SENATE 63RD DISTRICT LEECIA EVE NYS ATTORNEY GENERAL JUMANEE WILIAMS, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK JUDGE DEBRA GIVENS, COUNTY COURT! See you at the polls on Thursday, September 13th ! -A.B.

12 I want to thank everybody for rising up right with me this week. Let's get right into the highlights. NFL News This past Sunday was pandemonium as the NFL season started with the catastrophic demise of the Buffalo Bills. This was the beginning in which many thought the Bills would be an opportunity to show that they were ready to elevate to new heights after this past season. The Bills were coming off a season in which they ended the 17year playoff drought. Those hopes in Week 1 went up in smoke as the Bills vs Ravens matchup turned into a Baltimore beat-down. The final score was 47-3. The Bills offensive line as projected was absolutely horrible as they gave up 6 sacks. Nathan Peterman who was the starter in this game had a very forgettable performance as he was pulled from the game early after his stat line was 5-18 for 24 yards and 2 interceptions. Josh Allen stepped in during garbage time as the score was already 40-0 in favor of the Ravens and didn't do much as he finished 6-15 74 yards and a QBR rating of 33.9. LeSean McCoy had 7 carries in this game for 22 yards. Zay Jones led the Bills in receiving stats as he caught 3 passes for 26 yards. The Bills will have a lot to fix as next week's contest won't be any easier. The Bills will be at home this week against the Chargers. The Football power index is giving the Bills a 38% percent chance of winning this game. UB Football News The UB Bulls football team is now 2-0 for the first time since I was born in 1983 as they defeated the Temple Owls in exciting fashion 36-29. Anthony Johnson finished had a game-high six catches and 76 yards, including his game-winning 29-yard reception from Tyree Jackson with 59 seconds to play. This game meant a lot to the UB Bulls as it was reported by the Buffalo News that a friend that Anthony Johnson grew up with since elementary school was shot and killed before the UB vs Temple game. We send our prayers to that family. The UB Bulls will face Eastern Michigan this Saturday at home. Will the Bulls win the MAC Conference this season? In Other News •The Buffalo Sabres home preseason opener is on the way as they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 18th at Key Bank Center. •Nike sales increased by 31% after Colin Kaepernick's controversial ad campaign debuted. Bills Suffer Embarrassing Loss in Baltimore 47 – 3

I

t was a wet and rainy day in Baltimore. MD. The Bills defense was looking bad from the start with Star Lotulelei getting run over at the beginning of game. The Bills defense had no pass rush at all. In short, the way the Bills played was a complete embarrassment to City of Buffalo and all true fans across the country. It’s a shame . “The Process” has ruined what was once a proud franchise. Bills fans must get ready for a season of beat downs by NFL teams. You can’t put a JV offense on the field and expect to be in any games, with no experience at key positions. The Process kicked a meaningless field goal THE BILLS REPORT in third quarter and went into 4th quarter down 40 – 3. Tremaine Edmunds was Buffalo’s only bright spot and showed us a glimpse of a very promising future for him in the NFL. He is starting to get a feel for the pace of the game and how to read offensive linemen in order to know where running backs are going to run. He has excellent speed and can get to a defender rather quickly to wrap him. Edmunds is the only true NFL starter from the 2018 NFL Draft. “We have to look at film and move forward as a group, ”. he said. “We must learn from our mistakes. I’m getting comfortable out there and I’m starting to take advantage of it.” The Bills offensive tackle Jordan Mills said: “The Ravens played well and fast and we must do a better job of starting fast and keeping our defensive unit off the field.” All of draft blunders and miss handling of undrafted free agents are coming home to roost. Brandon Beene and Sean McDermott do not know how to build a football team. They made a mess of the salary cap and did not keep enough veteran talent and brought in a bunch of cheap bum players. The Bills must pick up a veteran QB in order to salvage the season. Bills trading A.J. McCarron was another mistake because there’s no veteran QB in locker room. What NFL Head Coach would start the season with two QB’s with less than two years of NFL experience? Wait a minute Head Coach Sean McDermott started Nathan Peterman last season against Chargers and benched Tyrod Taylor! What a joke that was and he looks even dumber TODAY! The Bills will be at New ERA Field to open the home portion of the 2018 NFL season against the L.A. Chargers. Yes, the Chargers with ex-Bills interim Head Coach Anthony Lynn will put another beat down on an un-impressive team. I wonder how long before Brown paper Bags will be worn by Bills fans? I have a feeling it will be sooner than later. My prediction: Chargers 24 – 7 win over the hapless BILLS! "Knowing when to stop you can avoid any danger."

Corporal Jesse Clipper served in the 317th engineers Corps during World War 1 on the front lines in France and was the first African American Soldier from Buffalo to die in the war. The Jesse Clipper post has a proud history of service to the Buffalo community. It has sponsored scholarships, parades, basketball teams and Flag Day events to inspire Americanism in our youth. Members can be found volunteering at the Veterans hospital, at the Freedom Lounge, at High Point Hospices , working with Homeless veterans, performing Honor Guard Services, and speaking and volunteering at over 50 organizations. The Jesse Clipper American Legion Post#430 has taken a leadership role in this community for 99 years. Legionnaires from this post continue to hold critical leadership positions in Buffalo and Western New York. However Legionnaires be aware: The state of our democracy is at a crossroads of whether we will be guided by fear versus inclusiveness. We are at a critical time in America. The country we love and fought for faces its greatest challenge since President Lincoln questioned: "Whether a nation founded on the principles that All men are created equal , can long endure?" Veterans Black, White, Hispanic Muslim, immigrants of all colors and creeds, - have fought to defend America and American principles in 12 Wars. We must unite this nation again, to stand against hatred and Nazis and KKK men marching in our streets. Leadership must once again come from our veterans! As the Jesse Clipper Post #430 approaches its 100 year anniversary, it and all veterans must pick up the mantle of leadership in our communities to honor Americanism, to educate our youth Unity and love must be our mantra and as veterans we must take leadership if this nation is to endure!
