RABJ Black Media Brunch to Bring Together Media Pros, Business Owners and Entrepreneurs From Around the Region

T

he Rochester Association of Black Journalists (RABJ) will host its first fundraiser after officially gaining 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status. The Black Media Brunch will be held at ButaPub, 315 Gregory Street, on Sunday, September 30 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Black Media Brunch is an engaging networking fundraiser where multimedia professionals from around the region join local business owners and entrepreneurs to help RABJ raise money for workshops and programs and to address ways media professionals can help tell the stories of black and minority-owned businesses. Hélène Biandudi Hofer is an award-winning journalist and host of WXXI’s Need to Know. She is also the founder and host of The Empty Hanger, a multimedia project that investigates the stories “behind the seams” of particular clothing items, trends and movements. As keynote speaker, Hélène will talk about how she has been able to use her voice and various media platforms to generate buzz about inspiring stories that are uncommon and rarely told. Hélène will address the value of communication professionals identifying alternative media channels to address issues, promote positivity and uplift communities of color. Lomax Campbell is cofounder of Black-Owned Business Rochester (BOB Rochester), an online resource that provides sustained support for Black enterprises, service organizations and affinity groups by helping improve effectiveness, generate revenue and create opportunities for growth and expansion. Lomax will follow the keynote address by presenting a call-toaction where he will encourage media professionals to consider telling the stories often untold about black-owned businesses, the owners and the communities they serve. “RABJ recognizes the impact that we can potentially have on the local economy by being a partner of black and minority- owned businesses,” said Richard McCullough, RABJ President and veteran multimedia professional. “To celebrate our new status as a recognized Not for Profit, we

Buffalo’s John Elmore will be first African-American Attorney to Convene 8th District Judicial Convention

N

ext Monday, September 24, renowned Buffalo attorney John V. Elmore will become the first AfricanAmerican attorney in history to convene a convention of the 8th Judicial District of New York State. He was nominated for this role by the eight Democratic county chairs of the 8th district, which cover Western New York. “I am grateful to the chairs for this honor, especially my hometown chairman, Jeremy Zellner, who lead the charge,” Elmore said. “After more than a quarter-century in the legal system, I know that the key to maintaining and advancing the cause of justice is a fair, highly competent judiciary, and it is a privilege to take part in the process of delivering that for the people of New York. “Unless we have judges of the very highest caliber, the courts and the people they are meant to protect and serve Attorney Elmore (left) and Democratic suffer. Justice demands the very best in us, and that’s what Chairman Zellner. I’ve always worked for.” Born and raised in Olean, John Elmore received his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University and has seen the criminal justice system from many perspectives, including New York State trooper, assistant attorney general for New York State, and a member of the New York State Attorney Grievance Committees, which oversee the discipline of lawyers accused of misconduct or neglect. Elmore worked as a Manhattan Assistant District Attorney from 1981 to 1984, and is past president of the Minority Bar Association of Western New York and a life member of the NAACP. He has received the NAACP's Medgar Evers Civil Rights Award, the Buffalo News Citizen of the Year award, and the Erie County Bar Association's Criminal Justice Award. Elmore has also been appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to serve on multiple judicial screening committees evaluating potential candidates for judgeships and as a trustee of Erie County Community College. He is an accomplished personal injury attorney in private practice, and is co-proprietor of the Buffalo-based Steve Boyd & John Elmore law firm. “John is the very definition of professionalism and public spiritedness,” said Erie County Democratic Chairman Jeremy J. Zellner. “I was gratified to put such a distinguished name forward for the purpose of convening our convention.” “John embodies the very best of our community and the legal field, and he is a true son of Buffalo who brings distinction to us, to this city, and to this region,” said Erie County Democratic Committee Vice Chair Arthur O. Eve, Jr. Next week’s convention will be held in Buffalo, where delegates will nominate Supreme Court candidates for the 8th District.

The four girls killed in the bombing (Clockwise from top left, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Carol Denise McNair)

America has a long, dark history of attacking Black people, not only in their homes and neighborhoods, but in their sacred places of worship.

Remembering the 15th Street Baptist Church Terrorist Attack On the morning of Sunday, September 15, 1963, the phone rang at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama where some 200 worshippers were either attending Sunday School or preparing for the 11:00 a.m. service. When Sunday School Secretary, 14-year old Carolyn Maull answered the phone, an anonymous voice on the other end simply said: “3 minutes” and then hung up the phone. One minute later, at least 15 sticks of dynamite, planted by United Klans of America members Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., Herman Frank Cash, Robert Edward Chambliss and Bobby Frank Cherry, exploded inside the downtown Birmingham black church. Windows shattered in buildings two miles away. Cars surrounding the church were damaged. The explosion left a hole seven feet wide in the sanctuary. Dozens of people

t’s overwhelming!” a grateful Barbara Dixon told the Challenger. “ I just knew it was going to come one day. I praise God and I thank all the people who helped us.” The “one day” she was referring to took place today (September 19) when her son, Valentino Dixon, was finally released from prison after serving 26 years for a crime he did not commit. “All the charges have been dismissed!” she continued. “This will let the public know that Valentino had nothing to do with the shooting that night of August 10, 1991.” That will be a night Mrs. Dixon will never forget. A shoot out at Delavan and Bailey left 17-year-old Torriano Jackson dead, two others critically wounded and a bystander injured by a stray bullet. The police arrested Dixon and charged him with murdering Torriano and shooting the other three victims. Valentino became a suspect because of an anonymous tip that falsely said he shot Torriano over a girl. But just two days after the shooting, Lamarr Scott confessed to shooting Torriano Jackson in self-defense! Detective Mark Stambach took Lamarr’s statement, but Lamarr was not taken into custody. Despite the real shooter’s confession the detective continued to pursue Valentino and built a case against him. A jury found Valentino guilty and he was sentenced to 33 years to life. He was 21 years old. There was no forensic evidence, no physical evidence, several eye witnesses, a confession by the real killer and no murder weapon tying Dixon to the crime. Valentino has never made excuses for his past life in the streets as a young man, but he and others have maintained throughout his ordeal that he is not a killer. Valentino, an accomplished artist, gained national attention for his work after Golf Digest magazine did a story about him. He was a model inmate who spent all but the last eight months of his 33-year to life sentence at the notorious Attica Prison before being transferred to Wende Correctional Facility. Valentino is Barbara Dixon’s only child. She said there is talk about a movie on his life, a possible book offer, and Golf Digest may be planning a follow up story. But for now, her advice to him she said, is just to take his time. His freedom is all that matters right now. “There is a God!” she said.

rother Abdul Akbar Muhammad has traveled throughout the African diaspora. An esteemed scholar with deep roots in the Nation of Islam, he serves as the International Representative of the Honorable Louis Farrakhan. Brother Akbar recently visited Buffalo to promote his new book “Africa and the World Revisited,” where he spoke to a receptive audience at the CAO Rafi Greene Center followed by a question and answer session and a book signing last Sunday. Hosted by Mosque No. 23, it was an engaging lecture highlighted by Akbar’s ability to effortlessly connect and integrate realities about Africa and much of what we as Africans in America are experiencing today; from the impact of “colorisim” with its roots in colonization and enslavement to redefining “gangs” and the importance of family reunions and writing our own personal histories. Frequently using a pointer to reference a large map of Africa behind him, Brother Akbar announced that the new president of Liberia, George Weah, is scheduled to visit the United Nations in a few weeks. Having recently attended a Trade and Investment conference there, he gave a brief history of mineral rich Liberia and Sierra Leone and the struggles ex-enslaved Africans who left America and returned there, faced. “We’re wrestling with some of the same things today as a people” he noted. On the bright side he said there are

Most cemeteries allow 1 or 2 burials in a single grave. At Forest Lawn, we recently changed our rules & regulations to allow up to 4 burials in a single grave, w hich can include 1 casket plus 3 urns or a total of 4 urns. For example, if a couple chooses side-by-side casketed burial in 2 graves, there’s room for them and up 6 other members of their family. This can represent a significant cost savings for the family. But more importantly, it can make it possible for you and your dearest loved ones to remain together forever.

opportunities in Liberia. Organizing and assisting visits to Liberia for African Americans is one of his goals. When asked about the next bastion of Pan African Leadership on the Continent, he replied that he did not see it in the immediate future, because “fear of the West” was a hindrance. He noted the leader of Rwanda and the New President of Ethiopia as examples of leaders being potentially able to take such a leadership role in the future. Other highlights from his talk: •Bringing issues current, he reflected on funeral service held for the great Aretha Franklin. He said he was insulted by the minister who preached her obituary. While Aretha was saying we had to stand together Akbar noted, the speaker “degraded the Black man. He was off base and should have kept the focus on Aretha Franklin instead of talking about our internal issues in front of the world.” He made it clear that Minister Farrakhan, who attended and

sat on the dais at the family’s request, did not go there to speak, only to show respect for his beloved friend. The Nation passed out an historic 90,000 free commemorative issues of The Final Call at the service. •Brother Akbar reminded us that It is the duty and responsibility of the elders and conscious people to teach respect and share what we know with our young men and women. We should not be afraid of them, instead “walk thru a little history with them” and tell our story to help them thru whatever crisis they may be faced with. Continued Page 11

were injured. Inside the church, five girls were in the basement changing into choir robes to prepare for the sermon that day entitled “A Love that Forgives.” Twelve-year-old Sarah Collin would lose an eye after 21 pieces of glass were embedded in her face. Sarah’s 14-year-old sister, Addie Mae Collins, who was tying the dress sash for 11-year old Carol Denise McNair, would not survive. Nor would Carol. Cynthia Wesley and Carole Robertson, both 14, would also die. Near the church, groups of White people began taunting the survivors. Johnny Robinson, a Black 16-year-old threw rocks at a gang of White teenagers laughing at the mourners. As Robinson fled to the alley beside the 16th Street Baptist Church, a car blocked his path and James Parker, a White police officer sitting in the back seat, shot Robinson dead. A few hours later, 13-year old Virgil Lamar Ware was killed by two 16-year-old White teenagers Michael Farley and Larry Joe Simms, who shot Ware after they heard he was out throwing rocks at their friends. Neither Jack Parker, Michael Farley or Larry Joe Simms served a day in prison, according to the Birmingham News. The Bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church was part of what is probably the longest campaign of terror in American history. Between 1947 and 1965, there were 50 bombings in Birmingham. One neighborhood was attacked so often by the Klan, to this day it is still known as “Dynamite Hill.”

Difference"

Music Knot Entertainment founded by T. Brizzy Brown (CEO) and business partner John Stover Jr. two cousins from Buffalo’s east side, have been steadfast on the entertainment grind since 2003 and continue to withstand the test of time in the industry. The label has diverse and different styles that have caught the ears of directors and producers in both film and music, making its mark to stand out from the rest in the entertainment world. Their slogan ,“We Are The Difference,” says it all. “We don’t follow trends, some labels just do music but we do it all, we always have a variety of creative people making it happen we believe in creative freedom as long as it’s positive we’re down for it,” says CEO T. Brizzy. Beyond the balanced pairing of CEO and business partner this duo also takes to the stage as one of the many musical acts under the company’s umbrella . They have also performed as very memorable actors in theatre like Director/ Playwright Phil Davis “Family Before Everything” and the hit series “PURE” (T. Brizzy as Orlando and John Stover as Moe) and for both projects among many others scored the music! The duo never takes their talents nor that of others for granted and are grateful to work on the variety of projects they have over the years with a many visionaries. Some of the music entertainers with Music Knot have performed for local signed / unsigned acts as well as big names like 50Cent, Nas, Trina, Method Man & Red Man, Juvenile, and Buffalo’s own Stevie J. Not to mention the release of Amina Boyd aka “Amina the Empress” album Transitions that is still a hot ticket item for the entertainment group. The latest 2018 project release “Legend in My Own Mind” the best of T-Brizzy Brown is a collection of all of all his songs and smash hits since 1999 to present, featuring a plethora of wellknown signed Buffalo artists & producers like Benny the Butcher, DJ Shay, Conway and Jimmy Dukes to name a few. Angie Thomas, Author of ”The Hate You Give” Teen Drama and Soon to be Released Film, is Speaker at Humanities Festival New York Times bestselling author Angie Thomas is the spotlight speaker for the Buffalo Humanities Festival: Revolutions at the Albright Knox Art Gallery Friday, September 21 at 8 p.m. Ms. Thomas was born, raised, and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi. Her debut novel, The Hate U Give, is a #1 New York Times Bestseller which has been turned into a movie. The Hate U Give is a teen drama film directed by George Tillman Jr. based on Angie Thomas' 2017 novel of same name. It is scheduled to be released in Theatres in October The book, The Hate You Give, has received starred reviews from 8 literary journals, one of the highest amounts received for a young adult novel, and will be published in over 20 countries. The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly both called it required reading. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Thomas’s searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty. Sixteenyear-old Starr Carter navigates between the poverty-stricken neighborhood she has grown up in and the upper-crust suburban prep school she attends. Her life is up-ended when she is the sole witness to a police officer shooting her best friend, Khalil, who turns out to have been unarmed during the confrontation – but may or may not have been a drug dealer. As Starr finds herself even more torn between the two vastly different worlds she inhabits, she also has to contend with speaking her truth and, in the process, trying to stay alive herself. Thomas holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University and an unofficial degree in Hip Hop.

A LETTER TO THE VOTERS OF THE 63RD DISTRICT FROM SHAQURAH ZACHERY

Dear Voters,

First and foremost I want to thank the people of our community for being engaged and participating in our Democracy. Our nation, state, city, and district depends on having citizens that are motivated to get out and be a part of our democratic process. I am thankful for the endorsements I received from The Public, The Challenger, and the First Amendment Club, and I respect the fact that in endorsing me, they took a position that was not supportive of the powerful political machine of our area. I also feel it is important that I say a very special THANK YOU to each and every person who supported this effort and was willing to stand with me. While the win did not come in the voting process, the VICTORY comes from having stood up and having had the courage and the tenacity to take on the political machine and for having laid a foundation to continue efforts to mobilize our community. This is not a fight that ends on Primary Day. This is a battle that will and must continue, because the issues still remain. We as a community have an obligation to stand for what is right and to push forward in our efforts to educate, motivate, and engage our citizens. We must continue to hold elected officials ACCOUNTABLE, and we must continue to organize as a community to put in place a strategic organization that can do that with the power that comes from a united and collective mindset and purpose. I am humbled and grateful for all the love and support that I received from all of the people throughout the 63rd District. I am honored by your belief in me as a candidate and as a person. This was the first step in this journey and as I said from the beginning, I am not going anywhere. I am here to continue to fight for the people of this community and I am honored to be able to do so. We must continue on this path, because it is indeed the path to empowering and building the community that we all love so dearly. Again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the support! With Every Best Wish,

Shaqurah

Remembering Attica and It's Buffalo Connection!

A

ttica means fighting back! Attica is all of us. The rebellion of 1971 that occurred at Attica State Prison is to be remembered and the prisoners who stood up for their humanity and dignity and for justice are to be honored.

In recent weeks, prisoners across the country in 17 states staged a nationwide strike. Their demands were reasonable, humane, and reminiscent of the demands put forth by the prisoners at Attica State Prison (aka Attikkka) 47 years ago. Among a list of other remedies, prisoners asked for access to rehabilitation programs for all, an end to solitary confinement and other forms of physical and mental abuse and improved mental health and addiction services. The national prisoners’ strike asked for Pell grants (for higher education) to be reinstated in the US states and all territories and that voting rights be given to all confined citizens.

Karima

AMIN

The 1971 Attica Liberation Faction, Manifesto of Demands, listed 23 demands and a Conclusion which reads as follows: “We are firm in our resolve and we demand, as human beings, the dignity and justice that is due to us by our right of birth. We do not know how the present system of brutality and dehumanization and injustice has been allowed to be perpetrated in this day of enlightenment, but we are the living proof of its existence and we cannot allow it to continue. The taxpayers who just happen to be our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons should be made aware of how their tax dollars are being spent to deny their sons, brothers, fathers and uncles of justice, equality and dignity.” Every year in September, PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO acknowledges the 1971 Attica Uprising. We have screened films, held panel discussions and featured guest speakers who were imprisoned at Attica in 1971. All have provided insight into the evils of a prison that is often declared to be the “worst of the worse” and the evils of a criminal INjustice system that has been purposely designed to target Black people, Brown people, and poor whites. This year’s national prisoners’ strike started on August 21, the anniversary date of George Jackson’s assassination by prison guards, at San Quentin State Prison In California in 1971. Affectionately known as Comrade George, Jackson was a much loved and respected Black Panther activist. This year, a week before the national strike, on August 15, seven prisoners were killed by guards at Lee Correctional in South Carolina. That inspired the beginning of this year’s national event. The strike ended on September 9, the anniversary date of the Attica Rebellion. During the national strike, prisoners engaged in hunger strikes, sit-ins, boycotts, work stoppages and more to call attention to the evils of mass incarceration which some have called “modern-day slavery.” In fact, in Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas, prisoners are not paid for their labor. The strike also called attention to a system that has trapped 2.3 million prisoners and their families in webs of collateral consequences that impact their lives, financially, legally and emotionally. Our next meeting on Monday, August 24 will feature a brief film, “The Attica Prison Uprising Forty Years Later.” More importantly we will have a guest speaker, born afterthe rebellion but nevertheless raised by parents who introduced him, at an early age, to the importance of activism and Black community concerns. Our speaker will be Malik “Lion” Blyden, a husband and father and president of the UNIA-ACL Division #433. Inspired by the story and teachings of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (mentioned in my last article) Blyden has authored a book about the Garveyite Movement in Buffalo, NY. Thinking about Blyden’s connection to Attica brings me to a few points which he will amplify at the meeting. His mother, Elaine Blyden, is a retired youth worker and the former Chief-of-Staff for NYS Deputy Speaker Mr. Arthur O. Eve who was a member of an “observers’ panel” that sought a peaceful conclusion to the prisoners’ rebellion at Attica. Blyden’s father, Herbert X Blyden was at Attica in 1971. The New York Times described him as a “prison-educated civil rights activist who gave eloquent voice to 1300 beleaguered inmates as their chief negotiator…” Brother Herb was the chief architect of the Attica Manifesto. “Lion” describes his father as a “pillar of strength” which must have influenced the men behind the wall and who certainly influenced his son to be pro-active in the work that he delivers in this community. Plan to be with us at the next meeting of PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO on Monday, September 24, 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Rafi Greene Center, 1423 Fillmore @ Glenwood Avenue in Buffalo. For more information contact: Karima Amin, 716-834-8438, karima@prp2.org, or BaBa Eng, g.babaeng@yahoo.com. 716-491-5319.

AKBAR MUHAMMAD SPEAKS

* “Gangs are young men in the street who want to be respected by their peers,” and are influenced by Hollywood, he taught, “but they need to know that going to jail is not a badge of honor!” •The importance of family cannot be overestimated and family reunions, he said “have to be more than just a big party.” He reminded us that “God is the ingredient that holds your family together." Sharing some of his own family history he acknowledged, “it was the Black woman (who was always) the backbone.” •The root of racism concluded that the African scholar, is the false notion that “White is superior and anything dark is inferior and that the White man is the closest thing to God.” It is a falsehood and a mindset that continues to wreck-havoc on the world and must, for the sake of humanity, be eliminated. Brother Akbar also spoke in Rochester on September 8 at the New African Cultural Center on Arnette Blvd. during his Western New York trip. His new book, Africa and the World: Revisited is described as “a comprehensive collection of Africa-focused articles written over a decade, offering insight and analysis from his lifetime of experience in international relations." Brother Akbar has traveled to 154 countries – 44 of which are in Africa. He also hosts Legacy Tours to Africa. The 2019 tour to Ghana is scheduled for July 3 – 14. Do People Want A Tim Horton's Drive Through Where W.E.B. Dubois Walked And A Black Business Is Not Even Being Considered To Be There To Sell Coffee? The City of Buffalo Zoning Board of Appeals meeting agenda for Wed, September 19, 2018 will be considering rezoning 474 Michigan Avenue for a drive thru Tim Horton's. The agenda idea appears under old business. Do people want a Tim Horton's drive through where W.E.B. DuBois walked and a Black business is not even being considered to be there to sell coffee? The Corridor needs to be respectful of its dignified past. A chain drive-through eatery will make the area less pedestrian friendly and less unique. The proposed mixed-use project does not fit the character of the corridor. Certainly something better can be planned. Plus, under the Green Code, a Drive-Through is NOT PERMITTED. We urge our representatives to please vote no on item 15 and do not allow for the drive through Tim Horton's on Michigan Avenue in the heart of the Michigan Street Corridor. Call city hall day. We deserve better.

Main/Dodge Development: What Would You Like to See? Citizens have a right to provide input and ask questions about future development in their communities. Most development is done with your money, the taxes you have paid, to benefit out of town developers. But citizens can and should question plans to make sure their community benefits from the development. Dr. Fadi Dagher and Cedarland Development Group are proposing a five-story, 130,000-square-foot building at the site of the former Travel Lodge motel, the corner of Main and Dodge streets. It is reported he paid $1.67 million for it four years ago. The City of Buffalo Planning Board is scheduled to review Dr. Dagher's plan at its regularly scheduled meeting, Monday, Sept. 24 at 4Pp.m. in 901 City Hall. The site formerly housed a Travel Lodge motel. Dagher demolished the long-vacant motel. Initial plans filed in Buffalo City Hall show the project will house 215 apartments on the upper floors and three retail spots at street level. Are the apartments for low and moderate income folks? Will it serve the needs of single head of household families? Who will these apartments benefit? Who are they for? What do you in the community wish to see at Main and Dodge streets? Organize and ask questions people. It is your community and you are responsible for its future.

The Process 0 -2, After Second Beat Down of The Season

RISE UP RIGHT!/ Highlights in Sports I want to thank everybody for rising up right with me this week. Let's get right into the highlights. Buffalo Bills On a very warm September afternoon in Western New York, many bills fans awaited the rookie quarterback Josh Allen's first NFL start against the LA Chargers who were shell shocked last week against the Chiefs. Many believe that Josh Allen should have started to begin the season in which Nathan Peterman did but got roughed up more than a passer whose been contacted late in a game by Clay Matthews. Josh Allen's first start was a roller coaster ride to say the least as he was sacked six times, threw 2 interceptions and missed some throws but showed some grit in the 2nd half as the Bills with all that being said lost to the Chargers 31-20 at New Era Field. Josh Allen was 18-33 245 yards and added a late TD pass to Kelvin Benjamin. The offensive line again was very shaky. The run game again this week was obsolete as LeSean McCoy carried the ball 9 times for 39 yards. Zay Jones led the bills receivers with 2 catches for 63 yards. The defense gave up 349 yards of total offense. Phillip Rivers threw for 3 scores and the chargers ran for 109 more as this game was more of a blowout victory than an 11 point difference. The biggest news from this game is the bizarre retirement of Vontae Davis at halftime. The Bills were down 28-6 at that time when teammates witnessed Davis leave New Era Field saying that he was finished with the game of football. His

teammates were very upset as Lorenzo Alexander told the media that he has never witnessed anything like this in any organized sport that he has ever played. Well Lorenzo, the Bills fans have not witnessed Andre "The Torch" this type of dysfunction from a Buffalo ROBINSON Bills football team in a long time so I guess everyone is caught off guard at this time. No point intended. UB Bulls Football Western New York rise up as your UB Bulls team is 3-0 for the first time in FBS history after they defeated Western Michigan 35-28. Tyree Jackson was 21-26 as he threw for 325 yards and 3 scores. K.J Osborn had a monster game as he caught 7 passes for 188 yards and all the 3 scores belonged to him. The Bulls will look to continue to show the Bills how to win games as they play Rutgers on Saturday. The Bulls are on top of the Mid Atlantic Conference. In Boxing News Canelo Alverez defeated Gennady Golovkin by a narrow decision to become the new middleweight champion of the world. Many people are hinting at a trilogy to this great boxing rivalry. There are many reports that Floyd Mayweather may fight Manny Pacquiao again this year. Which do you think is the better rivalry of the two?

For Student Athletes by A Former Student Athlete: Part 2

A

Possessing Leadership

s a leader, some of the most daunting tasks are discovering who you are as an individual, what your leadership style should be and creating a formula that positively influences the actions of those around you. More often than not, this process will include outside sources like mentors and influencers that you follow and heed to their instructions. This highlights a critical point in being a leader: All leaders Gregory L. are great followers and they are also good liars, cheaters, thieves, and have unrealistic GAMBLE II obsessions. As a former captain on the Niagara Falls High School National Championship Boys’ Basketball team, I was surrounded by alpha males. Two of whom, later went on to play in the NBA and one in the NFL. In order to lead alpha males, I had to be extremely dominant and strategic. My father taught me the importance of detail, efficiency and about intangibles, which led to me being what coaches refer to as a “glue guy”: dependable, intelligent, determined, capable, and versatile. In High School I learned the value of being able to do everything basketball entailed: to score efficiently, pass and involve others, motivate, defend other team’s best players, and do the dirty work. By the time I arrived first year at The University at Buffalo, I carried those same tendencies and quickly found out was that what made me successful at Niagara Falls High School is not what made me successful at The University at Buffalo.

Being extremely dominant, getting in teammates faces, using competitive language, being willing to push teammates to the brink of altercation did not warrant positive responses the way it did in high school. As a leader in college basketball, I had to now study not only what made me tick, but also what made my teammates tick. The new demographics of my teammates changed from young men who grew up in a 5-mile radius, to adult men with international upbringings. My solution to manage this new environment was taking a leadership class (something I strongly advise) where I learned that in order to lead, I had to find out the motivating factors for each one of my teammates. I found that sometimes, lying meant providing encouragement even when a teammates efforts were not good enough and the result of that reflected in more effort being put forth. Cheating meant taking on others responsibilities for the good of the team. As a thief, I took ideas from other players and coaches and implemented them on our team and being obsessed meant that I was obsessed with winning, even when we were not winning. Ultimately, leadership is an act of self-sacrifice. To lead, you are signing up to do what is necessary for the good of the goal which is to win. Leadership does not mean perfection. Howbeit, great leaders strive to be nothing less than perfect. Stay tuned for Part 3: The Art of Competition DID YOU KNOW... •John Baxter Taylor became the first black athlete to represent the United States in the Olympics in the 1908 London Games. During the same games, he became the firstblack athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics as a member of the 1600-meter medley relay team. • Kenneth S. Washington (August 31, 1918 – June 24, 1971) was a professional football player who was the first African-American to sign a contract with a National Football League team in the modern (post-World War II) era.

T

he Bills offense came out looking slow and lacking tempo. The Chargers were beating up on our JV Bills lineup. It’s a shame that McDermott & Beane have destroyed a proud franchise so badly that THE BILLS REPORT players are retiring from football after dealing with them. Keenan Robinson retired during pre-season stating that he could do other things in life. Anquain Bolden retired last year after dealing with “The Process,” before start of the 2017 season. Just when we thought we had seen everything Bills starting cornerback Vontae Davis quit at halftime during Sunday’s game and went home! That’s unbelievable that an NFL player would quit and announce on Facebook his retirement. Vontae was very unprofessional and should be fined by the Bills and NFL. Brandon Beane should never had signed him after a serious groin injury which tore his muscle completely away from the bone. It was obvious at training camp that Vontae was a shell of himself (I said that in a previous column). The Bills are on the hook for 3.5 Million and 1.7 Million opening day roster bonuses for a total of around 5.3 Million. Beane and McDermott should be fired immediately because the entire team is about to quit on them. This is the worse Bills roster I have ever seen in over 30 years. These guys are way over their heads in running an NFL team. It also seems like Kim Pegula as team President is in need of an experience NFL person to run her football operation. L.A. Chargers Head Coach and former Buffalo Bills interim Head coach Anthony Lynn once again beat his former team. Said Lynn, “the Bills defense played well, they took things away from us and we went to other options. We always use crossing routes as part of our offensive game plan; I was very pleased with wide receiver Mike Williams taking advantage of his opportunities today, and that unsportsmanlike penalty called on cornerback Desmond King II (Led to the Bills first score of game) was stupid on his part and is not what Championship teams do. I spoke to him about it (I can’t repeat what I said to him) and you will never see that from Desmond again.” This is what a real NFL Head Coach sounds like and having total control of his team. I’m glad Anthony Lynn after over 16 years as a coach in the NFL has finally been given an opportunity to be a Head Coach. He’s over qualified for the job and thanks to Mr. John Wooten (he’s responsible for getting resumes of qualified African Americans for Front Office jobs and Coaching positions. Please Google his name a true leader for African Americans.) Said Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram II : “The Bills did nothing surprising, we came out and had fun by making plays, putting pressure on the quarterback and winning. We have to get into the lab and build each week, and it’s only one win and a long way to go.” The Chargers are a team on the rise because they drafted well and most importantly kept their talented veteran players while building a quality football team. The Bills just continue to get rid of talented veterans even the day before the game in Jeremy Kerley’s case. The wheels have pretty much come off for the Bills season in the second game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more players quitting on them on the field. The Bills travel to Minnesota to face number one defense in the league and looks like a b low out with the Bills playing a better game, but without much talent on the field it will go down to defeat 31 – 10.
