Solidarity Sundays: Local Black Leaders Featured in Outdoor Series for Month of August
D
Danielle Ponder
Danielle Ponder Returns to the Legal Field: Black Lives Matter! Danielle Ponder was a Monroe Public Defender before embarking on a fulltime singing and songwriting career. Although a phenomenal song stylist, the COVID-19 pandemic sidelined her musical career. So she returned to the legal field and the Public Defender office; this time as a Special Assistant Public Defender, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, a newly created position. Active in the local Black Lives Matter protests, she hopes to address some of the issues she sees in the criminal justice arena. One of her main goals is to increase the percentage of lawyers who are people of color.
r. Lesli Myers-Small, superintendent of the Rochester City School District, will be the kick-off speaker Aug. 2 for Solidarity Sundays, a month-long series of outdoor morning events focusing on key issues facing the Black community. Sponsored by the Aenon Missionary Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, the series is open to the public. It will be held from 9 to 9:30 a.m. each Sunday in August on the front lawn of the church. "The objective of Solidarity Sundays is to bring awareness to the critical areas related to Black advancement in society," said Dr. Jonathan Jamel H. McReynolds, Aenon's senior pastor. "The focus shall be upon Dr. McReynolds local issues that are in need of solidarity, synergy and engagement in order to advance and elevate our community." Myers-Small, former superintendent of the Brockport Central School District, will speak on "Blacks and Education." The following is the schedule of additional dates, topics and speakers for the remaining four Sundays: Aug. 9: "Blacks and Economics," Malik Evans, at-large member of the Rochester City Council and former member and president of the Rochester School Board. Aug. 16: "Black Solidarity," Willie Lightfoot, at-large member of the Rochester City Council and former Monroe County Legislator. Aug. 23: "Blacks and Poverty," Demond Meeks, Democratic candidate for the 137th New York State Assembly District and a former administrative organizer for SEIU 1199, a labor organization known as United Health Workers East. Aug. 30: "Blacks and Voting/Public Policy," Dr. Cephas Archie, chief equity officer for the City of Rochester and former chief diversity officer for SUNY Brockport. Elaborating on the purpose of Solidarity Sundays, McReynolds said the series is designed "to promote public engagement and to facilitate institutional transformation in the public square, grass-roots organizations and various civic organizations that work for the advancement of society."

Community Leaders Unite Against Gun Violence; Announce Launching of Anti-Gun Campaign with City-wide Billboards Community activist Neal Dobbins fired up the airwaves last Saturday morning during “Express yourself Saturdays” on the Legendary WUFO Power 96.5 where he took the conversation to stem gun violence to another level. Speaking on three shows back to back - CAO Living Now With Nathan Hare, Bethesda World Harvest with Bishop Badger, and Buffalo on Fire with host Kinzer Pointer - Dobbins, founder of Most Valuable Parents (MVP) provided a wealth of information. He also announced that MVP, in collaboration with other frontline community organizations and stakeholders, would hold a press conference on Thursday, July 30 at 6p.m. at the corner of Genesee St. and Jefferson Avenue. As part of their 2020 Anti-Gun Violence Community Action Plan they will unveil one of six Anti-Gun Violence billboards going up throughout the City of Buffalo. “Our aim is to speak to the gun-violence problem we have in Buffalo by addressing the question: “Where are the Guns Coming From?” said Dobbins, One-hundred twenty people either were injured or killed in shootings in Buffalo through June 30, according to Buffalo police statistics. In the first six months of 2019, that number was 78. The 41 people shot in June alone made it the month with the most shootings of any single month in at least six years. Police attribute the uptick in shootings due to retaliatory shootings of rival gangs and group parties as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the media. However community leaders on the frontline have had enough and want to shed light and expose what they see as the root of the problem which is the trafficking of illegal guns from the iron pipeline States like Ohio/Pennsylvania and Georgia to Buffalo. Their anti-gun campaign will focus on educating the community at large how firearms are the leading cause of death for Black children and teens, as well as push for action in congress to repeal the Tiahrt amendment which protects rogue or what is commonly called “Bad apple Gun Dealers.” The root of such laws like the Tiahrt amendment, Dobbins told host Bishop Badger on Bethesda World Harvest show, “is to protect the gun dealer who don’t look like the brother getting shot; don’t look like the brother that’s going to jail; don’t look like the little brother that’s going to the graveyard.” The person trafficking the guns illegally he continued “will never be charged with intent to shoot somebody; he will never get 10 years for being on school grounds with a gun.” “Once these guns hit our community they are designed to fill the prison industrial complex with Black men. It’s all by design.” While focusing on local issues Dobbins said Thursday’s event was also designed to “galvanize our community to join a national cry” to repeal or get rid of the Tiarat Amendment… which prevents the establishment of effective policies to prevent illegal guns and thus perpetuating violence in our inner cities. Prior to 2003 noted Dobbins, academic researchers (when they were able to get the analytical information) found that the same 5% of unscrupulous gun dealers were constantly responsible year after year for 90% of the crime guns found in the inner cities of America. Many community stakeholders are expected to attend Thursday’s press conference as well as the frontline leaders of Buffalo Peacemakers, Buffalo SNUG, FATHERS, Stop the Violence Coalition, Community Health Workers, CAO, Urban Think Tank and more.
alcolm X was fond of saying, "Our history did not begin in chains." He was right. Consider: •African people mapped, calculated and erected some of the greatest monuments ever, like the pyramids, the sphinx and the obelisks (after which the Washington Monument is modeled). •African people were literally the lifeblood of some of history's greatest civilizations. •Calculus, trigonometry and geometry all trace their origins back to African scholars. •Haile Selassi I, ruler of Ethiopia, could trace his ancestry to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and beyond that to Cush in 6280 B.C. Selassi actually has the most ancient lineage of any human being in history. •One of the greatest conquerors the world has ever known, Hannibal, an African conquered and extended the rule of the Carthaginian Empire into Italy, Rome and Spain. And truth be told Carthage, Hannibal's homeland, is in Africa. •The kingdoms of Mali, Songhai, Cush and Ghana rivaled the dominance and territorial acquirement of ancient Greece or Rome. •The ancient Egyptians were clearly Black Africans who had arguably the most influential civilization of all time. •The Ishango Bone and the Lebombo Bone are two of the most important developments in the history of mathematics. The Lebombo bone, dating back to around 37,000 B.C., was one of the first calendars ever created and the Ishango bone has been called "The oldest testimonial of numerical calculus" in human history. Both were created by Africans. (-Researched by Dion Rabouin)

BUILDING COMMUNITY AMID Positive Examples of Working Together Within Our Communities To Support Ourselves And Our Neighbors During The Covid-19 Crisis
Legislaltor Baskin (center) with members of the Clean Air Coalition and Community supporters.
Baskin Demands Responsible Clean Up at Former American Axle Plant in Delavan-Grider Neighborhood The plant, which sits on East Delavan, has been closed since 2007 and was the site of dangerous chemical spills in the 1990’s. Exposure to these substances has been directly linked to developing multiple forms of cancer.

T
he way some individuals are walking around and shopping without masks or any type of face covering, one would think the county executive has declared that Erie County is Covid 19 free ; declaring that we can go about conducting our lives the way we did before COVID 19 made its appearance and in a matter of days, changed the world as we knew it. I, along with many other citizens in Buffalo have had friends or relatives contracting COVID 19 and unfortunately, some of them have died. Most of them have recovered but still many have been left with lasting respiratory issues and health conditions that they will have for the rest of their lives. Yet we still have too many people walking around Buffalo and going into stores, either spreading the virus or contracting it from others who may not even know that they are infected! We, who live in New York State, are fortunate to have a governor who took a leadership position to develop a plan that has decreased the number of deaths and the level of infection through the mandatory wearing of masks and the implementation of social distancing. These two procedures have assisted NYS in losing its position as the epicenter for COVID19 in the United States! We, the residents of Erie County and Buffalo, can continue to help keep our infection number low by wearing masks and standing at least 6 FT apart from others and not assembling in large gatherings. The We Are Women Warriors organization has been passing out free masks and hand sanitizers since the middle of March. These PPE items are available to anyone in Erie County, free of charge, on a daily basis, from 4 to 8 PM @ Grant's Variety Shoppe, 1055 East Ferry Street, Buffalo, NY. Are You Registered To VOTE?
Buffalo, NY- Erie County Legislature Chairwoman April Baskin sponsored a resolution calling on the formation of a community advisory group to discuss environmental cleanup plans at the former American Axle plant located in the City of Buffalo. The site is currently being remediated under New York State’s Brownfield Cleanup Program, which encourages private-sector cleanups of toxic sites and to promote their redevelopment as a means to revitalize economically blighted communities. The plant, which sits on East Delavan, has been closed since 2007 and was the site of dangerous chemical spills in the 1990’s. Exposure to these substances has been directly linked to developing multiple forms of cancer. “The residents of the Delevan-Grider neighborhood have been raising concerns about this site for over 20 years,” noted Erie County Legislature Chair April Baskin. “They must have a seat at the table during the cleanup process, since they will live with the end results. This is a matter of basic fairness.” Supported by the Clean Air Coalition, Baskin’s resolution calls on the New York
A series about family caregiving. Listen at tightknit.org
State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to use a process similar to that of the Environmental Protection
Agency and the Federal Superfund Program which involves input from community members in the testing and clean-up process.
“I am hopeful that the DEC will take our comments into consideration and make sure that residents who live in this area are informed of any progress and are also given an opportunity to actively participate in ensuring the environmental safety of their communities. I want to thank all of the activists in my district and especially Rebecca Newberry of the Clean Air Coalition for their continued advocacy on these issues,” stated Legislator Baskin. An official copy of the unanimous resolution will serve as public comment for the New York State DEC public comment period which is open online through July 31st. The Faces Behind the Forge on Broadway: African American Developers Paving the Way
Y
ou may not know his name or recognize his face, but if you’ve driven up Broadway or passed by the corner of Best Street and Fillmore Avenue you’ve probably seen his work. His name is Ernst Valery and he’s one of the driving forces behind two major mixed-income housing projects in Buffalo - The Forge Broadway, at the corner of Broadway and Mortimer Street, and The Parkview Apartments at the corner of Fillmore Avenue and Best Street (just across from MLK Park). Ernst Valery is the Founder and President of SAA|EVI affiliate Ernst Valery Investments Corporation, a private, minority-owned real estate investment firm established in 2001 based in Baltimore, Maryland. Valery along with Buffalo’s first minority female developer, the late Dr. Rhonda A. Ricks were the visionaries behind seeing both these projects become a reality. Valery says one of the biggest challenges a developer faces, especially when that developer is a person of color, is getting investors for the project, especially if that project is in a low-income community. “In Buffalo, you have a lot of folks that didn’t want to acknowledge that there were opportunities east of Main Street,” he said. That’s why Valery teamed up with Dr. Rick’s R+A+R Development to secure partners for the projects. “She really believed in the east side, she believed in the people on the east side, and when she saw this site she said, this is something,” said Valery. The Forge on Broadway is a $50.7 million housing project that includes 158 affordable apartments. The Parkview Apartments completed in 2017 was an $8 million conversion of the old Buffalo Public School 59 into a 26 affordable housing unit apartment building.
The Forge on Broadway
For Valery the journey to becoming an investor started in high school. He says it was in his freshman year when he decided he wanted to become an architect. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University. It was during his studies there when he had an epiphany, “I couldn’t really do the drawings and the creative part,” Valery said. “But I loved the people part. So, I got into planning”. Valery says after college he dived into developing by renovating small houses in Philadelphia. It was during this time when he had another revelation that would forever change his approach to developing houses. “I realized the planner in me didn’t like that fact that I was renovating one home and displacing someone,” he said. Valery calls it Development Without Displacement. Instead of displacing individuals out of the community Valery saw larger multi-family projects as a way of creating density in underdeveloped neighborhoods and keeping families in the community. Valery says despite his successes it hasn’t been easy. African American developers and developers of color face different challenges and obstacles than their White counterparts. Valery says good credit and a track record can help you get the
Ernst Valery

necessary funding for a project, but redlining people of color continues to be a major problem. Valery says his hope is to get more people of color involved in development. He believes apprenticeship programs can play a key role in getting more people of color involved in development. “Now, with the resources that we have and what we know, we want to be able to bring capital together, put our own capital at risk to help people realize that dream and take that same path,” said Valery. Valery believes the path to becoming a successful developer isn’t easy. He says along the way you’ll face many challenges. “We have two camps of people in this country - you have people who don’t want you to succeed and there are people who don’t want you to succeed without them,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to start small and don’t be afraid to build something independent. At the end of the day you have to build something that is yours and something that you can be proud of because the next generation depends on it.”
Community Groups Receive $25,000 in Funding Erie County Legislator April Baskin announced that she has secured more than $25,000 in Operation Primetime funds for several community organizations. The Delevan-Grider Community Center received $7,500. The Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT) received $9,000, as did Peace of the City. Operation Primetime is a county grant program that is focused on summer programming for area youth. organizations this summer.” The Delevan-Grider Community Center is an essential resource for the East Side community. They offer recreational activities, nutritional services and mentoring programs. BCAT is an arts and training center that provides high school youth with educational and career centered opportunities. Peace of the City is based in the West Side and offers a range of programs that provide young people with the skills, tools and values needed to succeed.

Pine Grill Jazz Reunion Goes Virtual With World Class Local Artists, Tribute to Agnes Bain & More!
T
he African American Cultural Center Pine Grill Jazz Reunion returns for its 31st consecutive year Sunday, August 2 and Sunday August 9! But this time it will be a virtual experience! Entertainment will be streamed and broadcast on the first two Sundays in August. The event is without a doubt, one of our city's most popular happenings and the Cultural Center is thrilled to be able to continue this 31year old tradition in spite the “new normal” brought on by the current pandemic. The Jazz Reunion begins at 3pm on both Sunday Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 9 with the following bands: Intuition, Unity Band, Nickle City Band, Delvin Payton and the Lyfe, Trigger & The Sermon, Uncle Willie, and Will Holton. There will also be a tribute to the beloved former Director of the African American Cultural Center, the late Agnes M. Bain, who produced some 30 Pine Grill Jazz concerts featuring national, international and local greats over the years. This year’s theme is “Live with Jazz and Jive” a play on words since during the swing era, jazz musicians referred to “jive” as a way of talking. “We will put the spotlight on our world-class local artists,” said saxophonist and national recording artist Will Holton. A renowned song writer/producer, Holton’s
media company, the William Charles Agency, is also the producer of the Virtual Pine Grill Jazz Reunion. All the live performances were prerecorded on the African American Cultural Center stage which was closed to the public during sessions. Health protocols were followed. The community will be able to view or listen to performances for free in a number of ways including: Facebook, Instagram, Zoom, and the African American Cultural Center website www. aaaccbuffao.org Stay tuned for the Virtual Pine Grill Jazz Reunion to be broadcasted on Buffalo Access Channel 22 and on WUFO Power 96.5 FM radio in the near future. This virtual format also pairs the convenience of the worldwide web with the opportunity to share our great Buffalo musical talent and this reunion with a global audience. “We are encouraging all of our Facebook participants,
families, and social groups to share the announcement of this virtual event with friends locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, we suggest that you plan Facebook ’watch parties’ and organize Zoom meetings/parties focused on this event,” said Tina Washington-Abubeker, the African American Cultural Center’s new Executive Director. The idea is to create a virtual reunion environment that will replicate the “live” Martin Luther King, Jr. Park experience. “ So fire up your grills in the back yard and treat your family to a cookout while watching Virtual Pine Grill on a screen or even your laptop!” she continued. “The Pine Grill Jazz Reunion is not just a jazz festival that showcases the top jazz talent, its reputation as a city and nation-wide reunion is legendary,” added Ms. Washington-Abubeker. Indeed, over the years it has been a celebration for Buffalo natives and a
homecoming for those Buffalonians who have moved away. It has provided the opportunity for the City of Good Neighbors to all come together in the spirit of unity to show some ‘Buffalove’ by reacquainting, maintaining kinship ties, and even making new friends. “Many people have felt isolated during shelter-inplace and this is just the boost that we all need for our morale. It gives us all a chance to reconnect with each other, check in and see how neighbors are doing” she said. -Tee Shirts, Posters, Good Vibes and Memberships! True to tradition, the Center will have Pine Grill Jazz Reunion 2020 Commemorative T-shirts. The artists selected for this year’s T-shirt graphic were Buffalo’s own James Cooper and John Baker. By purchasing a T-Shirt, you can own a copy of this work of art. There will also be a limited supply of posters. This Saturday, Aug. 1st, the AACC will have a “popup tent” sale at the Center, located at 350 Masten Avenue. There are several promotions going on with the T- Shirts. 1). Upload a selfie or video (of you, your friends, or family) dancing, singing, or just watching the reunion while wearing the Pine Grill Reunion T-shirt to be entered in a contest to
win a $50 Visa gift card. 2). Become a member of the AACC for $50.00 and get a T-shirt for free! *More details and rules for the contest will be provided at the “pop-up” tent sale and posted on the website. The “Go Getta” Talented Radio Personality Adri.V Uses Her Skills to Empower Youth and Elevate Her Beloved Community By Schondra Aytch
F
or Adriana Viverette,
radio has always been an integral part of her life. Even as a child, she enjoyed listening to the radio more than watching television. Born and raised on the Eastside of Buffalo, tuning in to DJ Hukher and Dawn “Break-A-Dawn” every day was a tradition for the future radio host. “I fell in love with those voices...they entertained me, they educated me, they enlightened me, they made me laugh. I had fun with them. They played jokes on people...and they get to play music,” Adriana exclaimed. Adriana, also known as Adri.V, is the originator of The Go Getta Mix, a radio show that highlights upcoming DJs, artists, and every day “go-getters” in the community. Currently boasting her show at 93.7 WBLK, 103.9 WDKX, Hot 99.1, and Dash Radio, the radio socialite is also involved in multiple philanthropic efforts. From founding her own scholarship, to creating after school programs, Adri.V’s eagerness to empower youth is a culmination of her incredible life hustle. Negotiating with her high school principal to intern at WBLK, Adriana fostered her love for radio early. Already doing the announcements at Mckinley High School, participating in JROTC, captain of the basketball team and Crusaders Drill Team, among other commitments, the aspiring personality was given the chance by Catherine Roberts to intern in the promotions department for the radio station. A mentee under Roberts, Adri.V was taught the ins and outs of promotions and the importance of connecting with the community. While at the station, young Adriana also developed relationships with staple voices like Kendra G, Shea Moore, Alexis Williams, and Terry Davis. “They all were brown, beautiful, and bold... They would be the life of the party wherever they showed up; and just connecting with their
listeners. I would sit back and watch in awe,” Adri. V reminisced. Interning at WBLK into college, the aspiring personality immediately built a presence on campus. Attending University at Buffalo, the future radio host was involved in the entertainment division of the Student Association as a director, General Manager of the school radio station, and was an events coordinator for Class Entertainment events promotions team. Accepted to intern at Black Entertainment Television (BET) the summer of her sophomore year, Adri.V, worked under realtor and radio host Egypt Sherrod for the network’s daily entertainment show The Black Carpet. Interning as a researcher and transcriber for the show in New York City, Adri.V also assisted with the after-show Under The Rug. “The Black Carpet was such a tight-knit team. They didn’t really have a lot of people like 106 & Park did or The Basement. They utilized us interns like we were a part of the team,” Adri. V reminisced. “So they would send me to the record labels. I got a chance to interview Jazmine Sullivan. They sent me to an NBA event. I got to interview Tony Parker.” Recalling the struggles of assimilating to city life, commuting from Long Island into New York city, and catching the subway was one of the biggest adjustments for Adri.V. In the bustle of work, sometimes she didn’t eat. Dedicat-
ed to the hustle and building relationships with staff, young Adriana was invited back to BET the following summer. Supporter of Renaming Rochester Airport to Honor Frederick Douglass Gets Death Threat
S
By Nanette D. Massey
r. financial advisor Richard Glaser had trouble logging into his workstation remotely on Monday, July 20th. He called into the office to find that all of his passwords had been suspended for security reasons. Glaser is the invisible hand behind a Change.org petition advocating renaming his beloved hometown’s airport, the Greater Rochester [N.Y.] International, to honor one the city’s most distinguished historical residents, Frederick Douglass. An escaped slave turned world renowned orator and presidential advisor, Douglass made Rochester his home from Frederick Douglass 1847 to 1872. Glaser’s workstation was on lockdown because his firm had received a very provocatively worded piece of snail mail expressing a desire for no less than Glaser’s death. In the handwriting of a third grader, the letter addresses him as “you stupid Jew b---,” and promises to find his home and bring a most unspeakable harm to his wife, kids, AND dog. It finishes with a stick figure drawing of a man hanging from a noose. I facilitate a frank discussion for a mostly White audience via Zoom.com every Sunday afternoon with people from as far away as Anchorage, Alaska, and Belfast, Ireland. My charge for participants last week was to tackle out loud stereotypes they’d learned about Black people. Like the story of The Emperor's New Clothes, falsehoods lose their power when we dare to speak plainly with one another. What we concluded was the most damaging stereotype is given the breath of life in the cavernous emptiness of lack of information about the happenings of the true, full history of the African diaspora on American soil. Our common learning would have us believe we came here as slaves, President Lincoln benevolently bestowed freedom upon us---and we haven’t contributed another damn thing to the creation of America as we know it until the civil rights movement’s beginning in the 1950’s. That is the sad, destructive premise of this anonymous letter writer, that only white (Christian) people have done anything worthy of such acknowledgement as having the name of a forebear be the first that you hear as the pilot announces her descent to the city’s hollowed gates. In case you’re still unclear, this is the very textbook definition of White supremacy. We can’t point a finger at our misguided letter writer as if he is a freak anomaly that comes out of nowhere. This author is a product of a culture that relegates the history of Black people to 28 perfunctory days a year and balks at even that little bit of a concession. Given the bold events of vandalism and violence unfolding across the U.S. in the wake of the resurgence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Glaser’s employment is taking this threat very seriously. There is talk of adding extra security at the office, and the letter itself is in the hands of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. At the time of this writing the petition has gained steam, garnering over 4,000 signatures in just over one week. The story has been featured on the websites of People Magazine, Fox News, USA Today, and BET. The renaming of the airport is meant to be one incremental step in recognition of the absence of Black stories woven into the fabric of America that will lead to a bolder, more challenging reflection on the American identity. I wish God’s protection on Glaser’s family, and His finger on the letter writer’s heart and mind and all those who think similarly.
11th Annual Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship Winners Announced On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, Retired teacher Eva M. Doyle presented the 11th Annual Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship at her home in her front yard. In the past the Scholarship was presented at the Merriweather Library but due to COVID-19 concerns the library was not available to hold a program. FULL MOON WATCH
The Next Full Moon is All About Survival... How appropriate that the Sturgeon Full Moon August 3 is in the sign Aquarius. The symbol for Aquarius is the Water Bearer, symbolically and eternally giving life and spiritual food to the world. The water from the vessel washes away the past, leaving room for a fresh, new start. The sign of Aquarius is forwardlooking and growth-oriented After the rough month of July the sturgeon is swimming into our lives to show us that we are stronger than we think. The sturgeon is a tough fish that can live up to 140 years. You survived last month and you will make it through the coming months this year. This should be of great encouragement as so many people are going through difficult times in their lives and this Full Moon is all about survival. If you are feeling despondent take time and do some prayers....do this for the good of all living beings. Archangel for This Full Moon Archangel Asariel watches over your emotions and the ebb and flow of life, just like the Moon, encouraging creativity and teaching through dreams and inner wisdom. Asariel is a great ally in the discovery of truth. He shows you what is true and what is just a rumor. He guides and protects you. So if you feel that you have negative energies or forces coming against you, rely upon this Archangel to help you. I feel that the main purpose of acknowledging the Full Moon, by prayer or ceremony, is to give you that lunar dose of spiritual energy to get you through to the next full Moon. Lions Gateway August 8 Every year on and around the 8th day of the 8th month of the year (August 8th), there is a massive cosmic alignment called “the Lions Gateway”. The Lions Gate is a time of increased cosmic energy flowing between the physical and spiritual realms. This is an opportunity for a powerful leap in tuning into the new energies of upgrade, realignment and the codes of activation. The Lions Gate has ties to ancient Egypt and for thousands of years has been observed and honored as a time of a great energetic influx and activation! This gateway is marked by an alignment between the Earth and the star Sirius. As the star Sirius rises in the sky, Orion’s Belt directly aligns with the Pyramid of Giza, and from our perspective on Earth, it appears that Sirius (the brightest star we can see) comes closer to the Earth. Many energies (at this time) are pouring into our planet and we need to be sure we receive only the positive energies. Be aware of where in your life you are embodying joy, responding with love, and feeling excited. And take steps to let go of the things that are limiting or draining. Take this opportunity to let go of old pain, release what bogs you down, and open your mind to renewed flexibility and clarity. Take time on August 3 and August 8 to go to a quiet place to pray, meditate or anything else that feels right to you and trust that all that is Divine will be there for you. Great waves of life are flowing all around us at this time. August is a powerful month of releasing and reevaluating your life. It’s time to let go of anything that is holding you back because you want to be open and ready for the new energies that are coming in at this point in the year.

COVID-19 Overtime Concerns in the Erie County Sheriff’s Office
I
t is time for Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard to provide a full accounting for the $441,655 in cash overtime that he allowed his political appointees to receive since March 12, 2020. Of all of the overtime received by 54 Erie County managerial-confidential appointees during the COVID-19 emergency so far ($825,039), 50% went to the 13 appointees in the Sheriff Office according to the Erie County Comptroller’s data. That is disproportionately high for one department. It has been reported that some of the funds went to cover overtime for the George Floyd protests and not the health crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic! Despite repeated assurances at an Erie County Legislature Finance and Management Committee meeting on July 14th from Erie County Undersheriff Mark Wipperman (the fourth-largest recipient of overtime) that his office would provide supporting documentation to justify and explain the expenditures, the Sheriff’s Office has not responded or provided any details regarding the work that was performed.

The Pandemic Of Gun Violence
he pandemic of gun violence in Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit and more than 20 other cities with populations over 250,000 people is devastating and heartbreaking. According to The Buffalo News (7/9/20), “shootings in Buffalo wounded or killed 120 people through June 30. (Fortyone people were shot in June, alone, including a 21-year-old woman.) However, unlike the Coronavirus, figuratively, the “medicine” to treat gun violence already exists. That is, foremost, Kat sustained actions to significantly MASSEY diminish/eliminate the availability of illegal guns. Why? Why? Why? is that not a forefront, articulated mission diligently pursued by Federal, State and City (via Police Department) law enforcement entities??? Please read on. In another News article (7/24/20) titled, “City police adopt 'shoot reviews' strategy in effort to reduce wave of gun violence” the Buffalo Police Department’s (BPD) new approach to investigating shootings was described. (Side Note: The BPD has a Gun Violence Unit, formed in late 2018, that only focuses on non-fatal shootings.) The collaborative, information-sharing, shoot reviews meetings ‘coalition’ of various Police Department units members; representatives from the District Attorney's Office; Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives; etc. – potentially, can be helpful. Hopefully, the minimal $229,000 funding grant, from the US Department of Justice, for the initiative, won't hinder its success. Troubling, the reduction strategy appears to have zero intention to directly impact illegal gun possession crimes in our community. President Trump during his campaigning said he knew how to stop the gun violence. Unaware of anything he had done to address the issue, in almost four years, I searched Google. This is what I found. Definitely, it's a very new initiative
“We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” - John Russwurm, Freedom’s Journal. 1827 America’s 1st Black Newspaper
At the Legislature’s committee meeting last Tuesday, my Caucus and I asked Erie County Sheriff’s Office representatives numerous questions about their use of overtime. To date, NONE of the questions we posed have been answered. In fact, at the hearing, Undersheriff Wipperman reacted angrily to questions and stated that he earned 473 hours of overtime in such a short amount of time because he was writing “policies.” Unlike other county departments, the Sheriff’s Office does not keep records of employee time in the County’s electronic time keeping system, and we have yet to receive a detailed breakdown of the tasks these administrators were working on. The Erie County Comptroller has called for scrutiny of the Erie County Commissioner of Health’s overtime, and the Poloncarz Administration has provided the legislature with records and her calendar. The Sheriff’s Office needs to provide similar documentation so the public can begin to get a full picture of the duties and responsibilities of the Sheriff’s political appointees during this pandemic. If the Sheriff’s Office refuses to provide the promised information, I will file a Freedom of Information request and formal investigations will ensue.
from him. The details are on www.whitehouse.gov – issued July 22, 2020 with the title, “Remarks by President Trump on Operation LeGend: Combatting Violent Crime in American Cities.” (The Operation is named after LeGend Taliferro, a four-year old boy, shot and killed, in June, while he was asleep in his home.) In brief, he stated, “Today, I'm announcing a surge of federal law enforcement into American communities plagued by violent crime. We'll work every single day to restore public safety, protect our nation's children and bring violent perpetrators to justice . . . frankly we have no choice but to get involved.” Next, there are lengthy statements from US Attorney General William Barr. Following are a few of them: •It's important to stress that the operations we’re talking about are the standard anti-crime fighting activities we have been carrying out for years around the country for decades.” •“This is a different kind of operation, obviously, then the tactical teams we use to defend against riots and mob violence.” •We will be adding federal agents to the task forces — these are street agents, they're investigators — who will be working to solve murders and to take down the violent gangs. •“The FBI went in very strong in Kansas City, and within two weeks we've had 200 arrests.” (The Operation will also address Chicago and Albuquerque, initially.) ZERO is said about direct actions to remove and combat illegal guns! In New York State, large amounts of arrests may have minimal impact, especially, since many bails can possibly be eliminated due to a recent law. And, Attorney General Barr's emphasis on the utilization of “standard anti-crime fighting activities” (which have not been effective for countless years) is certainly not reassuring.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Rev. Coplin (left) and Dr. Eberle.
Principal has Praise for Rev. Coplin and Project W.I.T.T. Dear Editor: I am writing in reference to Reverend Coplin and his staff working with our students at MST@Seneca High School in the Project W.I.T.T. Program (Wisdom In Troubled Times). He and his staff work with many of our students who, in many cases, are at risk students who need assistance with their academic outcomes along with social /emotional development. Many students are affected by today’s issues that truly impact their social/emotional wellbeing. As principal at MST and in education for over thirty years, I can attest to the incredible impact W.I.T.T. has given our students which has improved positive attitudes and behavior. More than half of these students increased their grade point average! Most importantly, Reverend Coplin's leadership and passion to assist our school with positive outcomes has shown amazing results. Our school, three years ago, averaged over 70 formal suspension per year. This past year, with W.I.T.T. playing a major role in our cultural redesign, reduced our formal suspension to 5 for the entire year! Restorative practices and showing unconditional regard for all students has proven to be the recipe for success. We introduced, for the 2019-2020 school year, "SPEAK LIFE TWICE" as our “Mantra.” I believe it has created positive impact on teachers, parents and all of our students. This program has proven to be a major impact on our graduation rate and continually shows increases with positive academic outcomes. We are in so much need for programs of this type so students may receive the necessary supports to get through these toughest times. Reverend Coplin has given our students “Hope” and “Purpose” to reach for the stars and follow their dreams. We are very fortunate to be associated with this man and his program. We know, together, we can build an army of young men and women to reconstruct the future for so many students in need. Dr. Kevin Eberle, Principal MST@Seneca High School

GUN VIOLENCE CONTINUED Why? Is there some, in the shadows, unspoken reason -- for the obvious, continuous reluctance or refusal to focus on major illegal gun sellers – who certainly must be traceable? They are essentially accessories to gun violence crimes.

his week the #FreeOliver post ran rapid on social media as Ed Oliver had all charges dropped against him for the incident that took place a couple weeks ago in his hometown. Police had claimed he was in possession of a weapon and had been drinking while driving and he was charged with possession of a weapon and a DUI. The Buffalo Bills released a statement after all the charges were dropped. The statement stated that the team was working with Ed Oliver in an offseason program and that they appreciated his honesty and coming forward to the team. The front office included that they allowed the legal process to play out and now that all charges have been dropped Ed Oliver can focus on training camp. Questions still spiral whether the
NFL will tag a suspension on Oliver for misconduct that may tarnish the league's reputation. Well, Rise Up Right is here to end that questioning by saying that usually the team would hand down discipline before the League would in situations like these. Since Oliver was cleared of all charges I doubt there will be any suspension from the team or the NFL. In other NFL news the league has agreed to having no preseason games this year. How will this affect NFL teams as the usual process to starting a season will be different due to covid-19? Will teams be able to have fans in the stands by season start? Rise Up Right will keep you informed if anything develops.

PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY THE COUNTY OF ERIE BY ACTION IN REM IN REM NO. 168 NDEX NO. 2020-600128 IN THE MATTER OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY PROCEEDING IN REM PURSUANT TO THE IN REM PROVISIONS OF THE ERIE COUNTY TAX ACT AND THE RESOLUTION OF THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE AS SHOWN BY RESOLUTION NO. 42 AT PAGE 164 OF THE MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF SAID LEGISLATURE FOR THE YEAR 2020
_____________________________
Please take notice that on the 13th day of July, 2020 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law. The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 13th day of July, 2020. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County. EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such
liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof. PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services, and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption. RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 1st day of September, 2020 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument. LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 1st day of September, 2020. SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure.
