Captain Charlie Price: Rochester Loses A Legend...

Mayor Lovely Warren announced on Monday that Charles Henry “Charlie” Price, the first Black man to serve as a Rochester police officer, died May 17 at the age of 98. She released the following statement: "I was filled with great sadness when I learned of the passing of retired Police Captain Charlie Price, Rochester’s first African American officer. I fondly recall presenting him with a ceremonial Rochester Police Department Sword in honor of the Department’s 200th Anniversary in December 2019. Captain Price joined the RPD as the Department’s first African American officer in 1947, rising through the ranks until he retired in 1985 as a captain – a remarkable and historic 38-year career! Along the way, he blazed a trail and set an example of excellence for other officers to follow. When I found out that we would be forging these beautiful swords as part of the Bicentennial celebration, I thought it would be fitting that Captain Price – who is such an important part of the RPD’s history – should have one. The inscription on the blade reads: 'Captain Charles Price – Service – December 1947 to March 1985 - First of Many.' On behalf of the citizens of Rochester, I extend my deepest condolences to Captain Price’s family, friends and colleagues. We are eternally grateful for his service and for leading the way for others to follow." Charlie Price, served for 38 years, rose in the ranks from beat cop along Joseph Avenue, Main and State Streets, to plain clothes detective and intelligence work, retiring in 1985 as a police captain. During World War II Mr. Price trained as a Tuskegee Airman and served in intelligence with the 332nd Fighter Group in Italy. He graduated from Monroe Community College and later took specialized course work at numerous northeast and midwest universities. Continued Page 16

Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams Issues Response to Mayor Brown’s 2021-2022 Recommended Budget City of Buffalo Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams released the following response to Mayor Brown’s FY 2021-2022 recommended budget: “The recommended budget by the Administration appears to be credible revenues and appropriations based off the prior years’ actual financial results as determined by an analysis from my office. “That said, I urge caution on a budget that is heavily dependent upon onetime budget gap files, such as the stimulus resources from the American Rescue Plan, Tribal Pact revenue, and undisclosed property sales. " Over the last three fiscal years, the City of Buffalo depleted it’s reserves in the Unassigned Fund Balance. Such action requires my recommendation that a Fund Balance Replenishment Policy be implemented by the Administration and Buffalo Common Council. "The Comptroller’s analysis recommends the Mayor and Common Council develop a public document that details the comprehensive utilization of the Federal stimulus resources. My office will continue to monitor revenues, expenditures, debt, and cash trends. I look forward to implementing the industry’s best practices to protect the City’s future financial stability.” "Knowing when to stop you can avoid any danger." Ching -The tao Te ching

We Remember Malcolm... Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother was the National recording secretary for the Marcus Garvey Movement which commanded millions of followers in the 1920s and 30s. His father was a Baptist minister and chapter president of The Universal Negro Improvement Association who appealed to President Hoover that Marcus Garvey was wrongfully arrested. Earl’s civil rights activism prompted death threats from the White supremacist organization Black Legion, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm’s fourth birthday. Regardless of the Little’s efforts to elude the Legion, in 1929 their Lansing, Michigan home was burned to the ground. Two years later, Earl’s body was found lying across the town’s trolley tracks. Police ruled both incidents as accidents, but the Little’s were certain that members of the Black Legion were responsible. His mother Louise suffered an emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband and was committed to a mental institution. Is It Covid or the Flu?

Although last year’s flu season was nonexistent, admit experts, if more people get sick in the fall they will want to know if it is the flu or the coronavirus. Even if people are vaccinated, they’re going to wonder, ‘Am I the breakthrough case?' A test has been developed, known as the quad test, that looks for influenza and the coronavirus at the same time.

On Wednesday, May 12, about 20 people were vaccinated at The Upper Room Church of God in Christ, 131 Florida Street, Buffalo. Most people do not realize how much work goes into putting on a pop-up vaccination event, but it is extensive. Each one of the people you see in the above picture all have regular jobs at one of our four health center sites. To properly staff the event, we take these people off-line for the day to go out into the community and ensure the success of our vaccination endeavors. IT is there to oversee stability of our internet connections, the observation area where vaccinated patients are monitored for 15-20 minutes after their shot must have a medical professional in case someone has a reaction, a licensed physician to draw up the shots, nurses to administer the shots, a clinical pharmacist, registration clerks to gather information and get folks signed in, and of course, you need those who greet people and guide them through the process. All these jobs are necessary to help us fulfill our commitment to the community to educate, and vaccinate until every family is safe!

HEALTH MATTERS

Juicing for Better Health “Sometimes you have to choose health, life and love over and over again until your being is ready to accept the new version of you”Yung Pueblo

T

rue health must be cultivated, nurtured, and sustained over time. It cannot be achieved with a magic pill, a fad diet or a lose weight quick scheme. It is going to be daily habits completed consistently that will yield the greatest reward. The secret to success is always going to be in your daily routine. A 2010 report from the National Cancer Institute on the status of the American diet found that three out of four Americans don’t eat a single piece of fruit in a given day, and nearly nine out of ten don’t reach the minimum recommended daily intake of vegetables. On a weekly basis, 96 percent of Americans don’t reach the minimum for greens or beans (three servings a week for adults), and 98 percent don’t reach the minimum for orange vegetables (two servings a week). As a result, most Americans are being deprived of the vital nutrients, minerals, and vitamins essential to building and maintaining health. A daily habit that can address this issue is juicing. Juicing is the process of extracting juice from fruits and vegetables. Juicing can be done by hand with a press or with a juicer. Drinking fresh juice daily will ensure that you meet and even exceed the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. For those who may not enjoy eating fresh fruits and vegetables, juicing can be a fun and easy way to have a healthier diet. Drinking fresh juice will cleanse and eliminate toxins that have been stored in the body’s tissues and cells. Juicing is a great way to easily saturate the cells with the vital elements needed to repair, restore, and regenerate the body. For those with busy schedules and who never seem to have the time to stop and eat, juicing is a great alternative, and it is a great way to get more fruit and vegetables into your children’s diet. The one downside to juicing is that much of the fiber content is lost with juicing. Three easy juice recipes •3 apples, 3 grapefruits, 3 oranges, ½ inch ginger •3 cups strawberries, 3 cups of blueberries, 1 apple, ½ lime •2 cups kale, 2 cups spinach, 1 cucumber, ½ inch ginger Eating more food from the earth, and less from a box will bring health and healing to the body and juicing is a great way to achieve better health.

"MASK CONFUSION"

he CDC keeps moving the goalpost. The latest guidance has resulted in celebration, criticism and considerable confusion. Just because a person is not wearing a mask, does not mean they have been vaccinated. Likewise, if a person is wearing a mask, they could be fully immunized and just choosing to be cautious. Add to that, many establishments still require masks - while others have abandoned their mask mandates completely. The bottom line: There is no way to know who is vaccinated and who is not in most cases. And because of the new mandate, the likely result is that almost no one will wear a mask. One thing we know for sure. Covid-19 is still very much with us. About a week before issuing this latest mandate, the CDC guidance issued the following on line in large bold lettering: “airborne virus can be inhaled even when one is more than six feet away from an infected individual." And that was a change from their previous position that most infections are caught through “close contact not airborne transmission.” The Washington Post reported that more than a dozen physicians expressed concern that the decision was premature…. while so many are still unprotected. They feared the guidelines could undercut two of the simplest and most effective tools — masks and physical distancing — for stopping the spread of a virus still infecting about 35,000 people in the United States every day. Remember, at the beginning of the pandemic, the CDC advised AGAINST masks only to change its guidance a couple of months later and the nation was told to mask up. Masks Matter. It’s a fact that the flu all but vanished in the U.S. during the coronavirus pandemic and many Americans reported that they caught fewer colds than usual all in 2020 . As one public health official commented: “When people face the pandemic as a group, wearing a mask is a way to reduce the individual impact on others.” "What we do today is really going to define what tomorrow is all about," Gov. Cuomo said Monday. "We are managing COVID. We haven't defeated COVID. More work needs to be done on the vaccination front. We're going to find more creative ways for people to take vaccines." Read updates on governor.newyork.gov On Wednesday New York State adopted the CDC's guidance on masks and social distancing. "If you are vaccinated. You are safe. No masks and no social distancing," Cuomo said. Masks will remain on mass transit, in schools, health care facilities and homeless shelters. Private venues and businesses not listed in the CDC's guidelines can require masks if wanted. The CDC says its safe for fully vaccinated people to do the following activities without a mask: •Walk, run, wheelchair roll, or bike outdoors with members of your household •Attend a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated family and friends •Attend a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people •Dine at an outdoor restaurant with friends from multiple households •Attend a crowded, outdoor event, like a live performance, parade, or sports event •Visit a barber or hair salon •Go to an uncrowded, indoor shopping center or museum •Attend a small, indoor gathering of fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people from multiple households •Go to an indoor movie theater •Attend a full-capacity worship service •Sing in an indoor chorus •Eat at an indoor restaurant or bar •Participate in an indoor, high intensity exercise class •Unvaccinated Americans must continue to wear a mask. Masks are still recommended for all in crowded indoor settings and hospitals, airplanes, buses and trains. Those with compromised immune systems are told to speak with their doctors about masks and social distancing.

6 Bible Reading Soars: 59 Percent of Readers Still Prefer a Print Copy, But There's a Generation Gap

A

ccording to a recently released American Bible Society/Barna poll Bible reading soared in 2020, with 181 Million Americans opening it. and although Americans who read the Bible still prefer to read a print copy over a digital version –attitudes are quickly changing. The new survey also found that 59 percent of Bible users in the United States prefer a print version over various digital versions or an audio Bible. The findings are included in the 2021 State of the Bible survey. Although a majority still favor a physical copy, that’s down from 65 percent in 2020 and 72 percent in 2019. In 2016, 81 percent preferred a print copy. The survey found a major generation gap in preferences. Print copies are favored by a majority of elders (84 percent), baby boomers (72 percent) and Generation X members (56 percent). They are less popular among Millennials (47 percent) and those in Generation Z (44 percent). A majority of Millennials and those in Generation Z prefer either a Bible app, a website/ computer program, or an audio Bible. “Smartphone or tablet use of the Bible among younger generations is increasingly popular,” an American Bible Society analysis said.

Challenger Community News • t hec hallengernews.com •MAY 20, 2021

Among other findings in the survey: •21 percent of Bible users say reading the Bible brings them comfort. Other top emotions include feeling peaceful (19 percent), encouraged (17 percent) and hopeful (16 percent). •Only 12 percent of Americans say they are “highly” knowledgeable of the Bible. Thirty-one percent say they are “moderately” knowledgeable, while another 31 percent say they are “somewhat” knowledgeable. One-fourth (26 percent) say they are “not too” knowledgeable. A majority (54 percent) of Americans say the nation would be worse off without the Bible. That’s an increase from 2020 (49 percent). “This belief in the Bible’s value to the United States aligns with a sense that the Bible upholds American values,” the analysis said. “Faith (72 percent), hope (71 percent), and love (69 percent) are widely agreed upon as values the Bible is essential for sustaining.” The percent of Americans who say they never use the Bible fell to 29 percent – its lowest point since 2016. According to a recently released American Bible Society/Barna poll t's not only Christians who read the Bible: 37 percent of those "who self-identify with other religions"

An Amazingly Dedicated, Focused Life For 108 Years!

O

n May 10 family, friends well-wishers hosted a marvelous Drive Thru Birthday Wish on Madison Avenue in honor of Brooksie McCutcheon who celebrated her 108th birthday! Brooksie McCutcheon was born May 10, 1913, in Atwood, Tennessee. She picked cotton and worked in the fields. She was a housekeeper in Tennessee. She lived in Detroit working at the football stadium cleaning the field house. At one time she was the housekeeper of Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson. She moved to Buffalo and worked at U.S. Rubber Plant and Woolworth’s on Main Street in the kitchen. On January 15, 1947, she married late James McCutcheon. They were married for 43 years. Brooksie had two sons and one daughter. She had one brother and three sisters. She is the last living sibling. Because the man she married was an awesome husband she didn’t work outside of the house. She became a housewife and took care of many children well into her 90s. On Fridays when James got off work, Brooksie would have the boat packed. After he took his shower and nap, the family would go fishing for the weekend. She would get up early Saturday morning to cook homemade biscuits, liver, and fried onions. Every day she would put on her apron and she would cook a full dinner from scratch. Cornbread went in the oven at 4 PM so it would be hot when James came home from work. On Saturday mornings, she would walk to Sattler’s and the Broadway Market to get fresh vegetables and fruit then go to the store behind the market to pick out her live chicken. Then she would come home and sit on the porch until daybreak and play pinochle with the girls while waiting for the peanut man. She enjoyed going to Deco’s Restaurant on Fridays to get a hamburger with James. She loved working in her vegetable and fruit garden. In the fall she would can vegetables and fruit. In the winter she would sit at the kitchen table quilting by hand. At the age of 108, she still likes to go fishing. She enjoys having a sweet dessert after dinner. She also enjoys traveling with her daughter and son-in-law in their RV. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Lyies. She was in the choir. Her last membership was at White Rock Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Ivery Daniels. She was a faithful member of the Willing Workers. She was also an Eastern Star.

NO JOKE: DAVE CHAPPELL LOOKING TO RETURN TO AFRICA Essence has reported that Dave Chappelle is looking to return to Africa, possibly for good, according to his recent sit-down chat with supermodel icon Naomi Campbell. The two had a conversation on the latter’s No Filter with Naomi podcast, where Chappelle shared that he was inspired by Stevie Wonder and wanted to follow in his footsteps with a move to Ghana, West Africa. In February Stevie Wonder told Oprah in an interview that he was moving his family to Ghana. He first considered moving to Ghanaian 1994. He said he felt there was "more of a sense of community" than in the US. Dave Chappelle Since 2018’s “Year of Return” initiative, Ghana has been a hotbed for Black Americans—celebrities and regular folk alike—who find the West African nation as a possible new home. Now in its second pillar, “Beyond the Return,” is aimed at not only promoting tourism, but also fostering economic relations, trade and investments from the diaspora in Africa and the world at large. “ Chappelle’s aspiration highlights a growing sentiment within the Black community—to escape persecution and assault from White America. With the legendary comedian planning to possibly uproot himself from the country of his birth, Chappelle shared that he wanted to build something there a comedy club or homes for rent in the foreseeable future.

African American Cultural Center to Host African Dance & Music Festival

JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL OF BUFFALO’S 46TH CONSECUTIVE FESTIVAL IS STILL ON, BUT STILL ONLINE! Though restrictions and protocols based on the Covid-19 infection and hospitalization rates, seem to change by the hour, and families, school districts, businesses, and organizers of summer activities, including amusement parks and festivals are making often tough decisions on whether or not to host inperson or virtual events, the Juneteenth Festival, Inc. (a.k.a. Juneteenth of Buffalo) Board of Directors has decided to adhere to the virtual platform for presenting our 46th consecutive festival. This year’s Festival’s plans include collaborative events with BuyBlackBuffalo, in support of Black-owned businesses in our community; Kelly Diane Galloway’s Project Mona’s House; and WUFO Power 96.5/Mix 1080, as the station celebrates its 60th year on air! The Liberation Flagraising will be held in Niagara Square and there’ll be “popup” events, during Sankofa Days, that will heighten our level of love and appreciation for our culture, our narrative, and our community! And, of course, all of the excitement culminates Festival weekend, June 19 – 20, on the virtual ‘stage’! Stay tuned, throughout June 2021, as we spread the messages of faith and freedom throughout Western New York, as safety restrictions allow, and virtually, over the worldwide web. As we recognize Juneteenth’s historic significance, we celebrate the acknowledgement by New York State and the city of Buffalo of June 19, Juneteenth, as a legal holiday beginning this year. We hope you’ll join our Juneteenth Festival community of volunteers and raise your Liberation flag in front of your homes and businesses, during this season. Stop by Festival headquarters, 1517 Genesee St., Buffalo, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Mon. – Friday, and Grant’s Variety Shoppe, 1055 E. Ferry St., Buffalo, 12 p.m. – 8 p.m., to buy your flags, commemorative caps, masks, and to order your t-shirts. So, like we celebrate summer with our grills, corn-on-thecob, and yard, or porch parties, let’s celebrate safely on June 19, 2021, while you watch the virtual events stream through your laptops, tablets, phones, and other personal devices! Don’t miss this memorable year of our 46th consecutive festival! Check out juneteenthofbuffalo.com as we continue to update the site with more information. Peace and Love! – Jennifer Earle Jones

The FREETHEM Walkers: Update There’s a small army of soldiers who are courageous, focused, and determined, to fulfill the mission of Kelly Diane Galloway, our world’s contemporary Harriet “Moses” Tubman. Ms. Galloway and 14 others began their walk from Lynchburg, VA to Buffalo, NY, May 3, 2021. They’re traveling along one of the routes of the Underground Railroad, the best kept secret, of the 19th century, for leading enslaved African Americans from bondage in the southern states to freedom in the north and Canada. Ms. Galloway, the visionary and founder of Project Mona’s House, a program of the Christian Humanitarian organization, Ramp Global Ministries, that helps those who are homeless, orphaned, and exploited through human trafficking (projectmonashouse. com), knows that more attention and energy must be given to the eradication of these offenses against humanity. Galloway, the “Lead Conductor” and her team of ‘abolitionists’ are walking the route to bring greater awareness of human trafficking and its existence as a form of modern-day slavery. Their journey, to date, has brought them from Lynchburg to New York City, and it has been eventful. They’ve stopped in several cities, shared their mission, and gained support. They’ve been housed, fed, and supported by many as they’ve traveled from state to state; much like the original “passengers” on the Underground Railroad. They’ve

even added a new walker along the way. This persistent crew of now 16 “FREETHEM” walkers, 11 women and 5 men, are energized by daily workouts and the covenant relationships they’ve established through food and lodging donations from recreational vehicle (RVs) and Airbnb owners, and hotels along the way. June 19, 1865 is the date of the first Juneteenth

celebration, when the enslaved in Galveston, TX were informed that they’d been declared ‘free’ two and a half years earlier by declaration of the Emancipation Proclamation. This year, on June 19, the “FREETHEM” walkers plan to arrive in Buffalo’s Niagara Square that morning and complete their journey with festivities at the Michigan Street African Heritage Corridor. Buffalo will be filled with excitement that day as Juneteenth

is celebrated throughout the community on this first New York State and City of Buffalo designated Juneteenth holiday. For more information on “THE FREETHEM WALK” and how you can support their mission, go to thefreethemwalk.com. – J.E. Jones

Prayers for Saniyya and Increasing Ranks Of Black Real Estate Pros Could Help Boost Her Family… Saniyya Dennis, the BufBlack Homeownership falo State College student who disappeared last month, is presumed dead by apparent suicide according to officials. While authorities have not located the 19-year-old's body, they were able to reach that conclusion based on a timeline of her last hours DA John Flynn said during a press conference. Saniyya was last seen alone on New York State Park Police cameras shortly after midnight walking toward Goat Island, in Niagara Falls where her phone last pinged A male friend called Dennis, who picked up and said she was going to jump off a bridge, according to the DA. After talking for about an hour, Dennis later told him she was on the bus returning home, which, according to phone records, was not true. After reporting her missing from the college her family members came to Buffalo and initially expressed their frustration over what they perceived as a lack of urgency in finding their loved one. Their advocacy initially prompted a community-wide search in Buffalo-Niagara. Falls and full investigation consisting of multiple law enforcement agencies and numerous volunteers Dogs were trained to pick up her scent. They reportedly stopped picking up the scent near Goat Island. Despite the evidence, the DA said the search for Dennis would continue.

lack homeownership rates have been falling since the Great Recession. Even as the real estate market exploded during 2020, Black homebuyers were largely left behind. Just 42% of the Black population in the U.S. owns a home, compared with 64.2% of the general population, according to the National Association of Realtors.

“Our members aren’t just here to sell real estate, they’re there to serve the community, as well,” he said.

Systemic and historical factors contribute to the lower homeownership rate in the Black community, but according to the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), a shortage of Black real estate agents may be a contributing factor.

Some of their proposals include allowing Black buyers to take advantage of HUD’s section 184 loan guarantee. Currently, only Native Americans are eligible for that program, which guarantees that lenders will be paid even if the borrower defaults. NAREB also advocates creating a 529-style tax-free savings program for down payments, which would make it easier for people to put away money to purchase a home.

The organization cites Deloitte research, which estimates that only 6% of real estate professionals identify as Black, even though Black people make up 11% of the U.S. population. NAREB recently announced a partnership with online real estate firm HomeLight aimed at addressing that disparity. The two organizations partnered to launch the Black Real Estate Agent Program, which aims to help aspiring Black real estate agents get a foothold in the industry. It’s a great way to do something intentional that could have a long-lasting impact in the industry,” said former Buffalo native Antoine Thompson, executive director of NAREB. “According to industry data, Black agents on average earn about half of what white agents make.” The program with HomeLight aims to give Black real estate agents resources to boost their earnings, as well. Thompson agreed and added that increasing the ranks of Black real estate professionals could help boost Black homeownership rates.

"Knowing when to stop you can avoid any danger." Ching -The tao Te ching

Aside from personal steps such as working to boost credit scores or setting savings goals, NAREB advocates for targeted policy changes that could help more Black people buy homes.

Sankofa Days Takes it to The Water!

Boat Building Workshop Conducted as Part of 2021 Juneteenth Celebration Buffalo Maritime Center (BMC) is conducting a 6-Hour Canoe Workshop for the 2021 Juneteenth Festival at the Juneteenth Headquarters at 1517 Genesee Street. The project is both observational and hands-on. For those who just want to watch and learn, a BMC representative will interpret the process while others demonstrate the elements of building the boat. For anyone that wants to, they will be able to fully participate in building the boat under BMC guidance and supervision. of the Buffalo Maritime Center and the Beginning with a stack of materials, par- Members JuneTeenth Committee at Juneteenth headquarticipants cut the required pieces to size using ters. Manipulating materials, marking, measuring and cutting, the use of woodworking tools, and practicing STEM principles and practices are observable objectives of the workshop. A goal of the BMC and our programs is to do more outreach to the community outside of tier facility in the Riverside section of Buffalo. With this pilot program, the BMC is looking forward to forming a partnership with the Juneteenth Festival. -The Higher Level ConnectionJomo Akona, a second generation carpenter and member of the Executive Board of the North Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters, created the Juneteenth Sankofa Days. As far back as 40,000 years ago, ancient Africans were building ships, he pointed out. Just a few years ago, scientists discovered the third oldest boat in the world in Africa called the Dufuna Canoe. It was rowed by one or two people and made of mahogany. “Boat building is a beautiful example of Sankofa,” observed Dayatra Amber of the Juneteenth Committee. “ On a more esoteric level, she said, “it’s a step toward healing and getting back into the water. ” It also gives participants to create something with their own hands she added. The canoe, once complete, will be put into the water at Hoyt Lake. "Primarily we have a lot of trauma around the water,” Dayatra said in reference to The Crossing in slave ships from Africa to America. “And water being the life force it’s a beautiful first step back into the water… in the healing process.” At the conclusion of the workshop, the Juneteenth Festival will own the hand-made canoe and paddle.

SUPPORT FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE:

A crowd marches through downtown Chicago in support of the Palestinian people. “Like indigenous people throughout the world, the Palestinian people demand a life of dignity, sovereignty and self-determination," stated the Black Alliance for Peace in a May 17 press release linking the plight of the Palestinians to African liberation. “As Black internationalists, we will always be in solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the statement read in part. “This struggle is being fundamentally about power, and historical injustices that continues,” noted Khury Petersen-Smith of the Michael Ratner Middle East Institute for Policy Studies. London Police Ordered to Pay Thousands to Nation of Islam for Blocking Minister Louis Farrakhan’s Reparations Speech In 2017 The Metropolitan Police Service and the Lambeth London Borough Council must pay the Nation of Islam $130,000 in damages, England’s High Court of Justice ruled on Monday. Justice Neil Stephen Garnham ruled that the two agencies conspired to prevent Minister Louis Farrakhan from giving a speech about slavery reparations in 2017. In doing so, the two groups violated the rights of 34 Black representatives of the U.K. Nation of Islam. Farrakhan was set to deliver a remote speech at the 4th Africa International Day of Action event in August 2017 about the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the justifications for reparations. Police claimed the blocked they speech to prevent “disorder” but lawyers with the Nation of Islam disagreed. Authorities placed restrictions on the permit for the event in Kennington Park to prevent Farrakhan from addressing the event via broadcast from the United States.

MALCOLM X continued

Why We Honor Malcolm X Malcolm X, the man who began his life as Malcolm Little and ended it as ElHajj Malik El-Shabazz, has disappointed his critics by not slipping into obscurity. From the time of Malcolm’s death in 1965, America’s media, has tried to make Malcolm disappear from the memory of African Americans, first by neglect, and then by painting him as a wild-eyed, slick-talking, purveyor of hate. However, the media, which has increasingly been looked upon with skepticism by many African Americans, could not convince us that there was nothing to learn from the life of a man who had transformed himself from Malcolm Little, street hustler and drug addict; into Malcolm X, articulate, brilliant and upright leader, and then transformed himself again into El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, internationally recognized pokesman for Africans under American oppression. Malcolm was a faithful husband and devoted father, uncompromising, tireless and fearless champion for what he believed in. For this he paid the ultimate price for his devotion to our liberation struggle. What an example for us today. Why do we honor him? Ossie Davis, who gave the eulogy at Malcolm’s funeral, answered that by asking a simple question; “Did he [Malcolm] ever do a mean thing? Was he ever himself associated with violence or any public disturbance? ...Malcolm was our manhood, our living, Black manhood! This was his meaning to his people. And, in honoring him, we honor the best in ourselves.” Malcolm X was assassinated during a speaking engagement in Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965 when three gunmen rushed Malcolm onstage. He was 39 years old.-Linwood F. Tauheed

Toronto Raptors: There’s No Place Like Home....

W

e often take things for granted. It must be human nature. You get comfortable and expect that things will remain the same from day to day. One of those comforts being home life. Unfortunately, for the Toronto Raptors they were forced to relocate because of the Pandemic. This placed the Raptors at a considerable disadvantage compared to the rest of the NBA. Stay tuned. I’ll comeback to that. I’d like to take this time to wish you and your family continued strength and health as there seems to be a light at the end of tunnel from the darkness of this past year. On Sunday May 16 the NBA had it’s last day of the regular season with some meaningful games and what some might consider formalities as they get ready for “The Off Season”(some will be listening to the album as well as relaxing). Sadly, Toronto would be playing it’s last game of the season after not qualifying for the playoffs. A year of turmoil where the Raptors used 38 different starting lineups had Coach Nurse salivating about next season. In the Pre-game availability he stated “there’s some hunger and desire to get started on next season” already. But first the formality! Today’s game where Toronto would be playing the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers were on pace to make a playin game. With the Raptors not playing for the post season this was an opportunity for some reserve players to get some regular season minutes. If you’ve been reading my articles or if you’re an avid NBA fan you know that a Nick Nurse coached team is going to come to play regardless of what they’re playing for. So with that being said the Raptors got off to a good start in the first quarter. By the 7:30 mark Indiana was up 12-8. The game was competitive until about the end of second quarter. Indiana went into halftime leading 69-55. Deandre’ Bembry kept the Raptors clawing back. The Toronto reserves

Rochelle Bilal: "Beaty Can Win!" History-Making Philadelphia Sheriff to Campaign Here for Kim Beaty

W

hen Sheriff Rochelle Bilal was sworn in to serve a four-year term to lead the Office of the Sheriff for the City and County of Philadelphia last January, she made history as the first elected African American woman sheriff in the department’s 181-year history, as well as its first-ever elected woman. Sheriff Bilal is coming to town in two weeks to attend an important fundraiser in support of Kimberly Beaty who is running for Sheriff of Erie County - a candidate she believes can win. The event, hosted by Michael "Mickey" Vertino, Lisa Wilson, Bernard "Bernie" Tolbert and Friends, will take place on Wednesday, June 2 at the Luxor Steak & Lobster Restaurant, 3199 Main Street from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $250 for Sponsors, $99 for Supporters and $50 for Contributors. For ticket information go to info@kimberlybeatyforsheriff.com or call (716) 602-4438. The careers of Bilal and Beaty parallel in a number of ways. •Aside from both being intelligent, qualified, experienced Sheriff Bilal women of color, they are both former city police officers; Bilal, a 27-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and Beaty who served for 32 years in The Buffalo Police Department, rising to the rank of Deputy Police commissioner. •Sheriff Bilal is an historic first. Officer Beaty, currently serving as the Director of Public Safety at Canisius College is hailed as the first woman to hold this post at the college. Sheriff Bilal also worked in Public Safety. In the capacity of a "first.” •They were both born and raised in the cities/communities they serve. •As an officer Bilal taught recruits at the Philadelphia Police Training Center, where she launched the Steer Straight initiative. Steer Straight, which is still in existence today, helps new police recruits to identify and avoid situations that may pose potential risks to their future careers in law enforcement. •Chief Beaty is a Certified Master Instructor for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and has provided training at several police agencies across the region. She serves as a facilitator for the Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy, focusing on Law Enforcement and Diversity. •And most significantly Sheriff Bilal, like candidate Beaty, ran without the support of the local Democratic Party in her town. Her campaign reportedly brought together people from all walks of life across the city. At one point during the election Bilal declared, “There has to be change. We’re sick of bullies in the Democratic Party. I will not be bullied. Trust me: we are going to win this race because of that.” She campaigned on a fresh start to a troubled office and despite the naysayers, won an upset Democratic Primary victory over a 2-term sheriff. She was sworn in on January 6, 2020. It’s expected that remarks from Sheriff Bilal will further energize the Beaty base as we get closer to the June 22 Primary. -An Advocate for Criminal Justice ReformSheriff Bilal formerly served as secretary of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP. She is president of the Guardian Civic League, a law enforcement community oversight organization, made up of over 2,500 active and retired Philadelphia police officers. As a Philadelphia police officer, Sheriff Bilal served in units that focused on sex crimes and drug trafficking. She also spent time in patrol, and taught recruits at the Philadelphia Police Training Center, where she launched the Steer Straight initiative. Steer Straight, which is still in existence today, helps new police recruits to identify and avoid situations that may pose potential risks to their future careers in law enforcement. Bilal retired from the Philadelphia Police Department in 2013. Sheriff Bilal is an advocate of criminal justice reform and encourages community engagement and outreach with her office. As sheriff, she implements policies and procedures to improve the efficiency and engagement of the more than 400 employees of the department. The Sheriff’s Office has a $26 million + budget and oversees court security, prisoner transportation to and from court, as well as managing sheriff’s sales, court-ordered sales of foreclosed and tax-delinquent properties. Sheriff Bilal is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia.

This is God’s Time...

T

his is truly God’s time, but I guess I am just really catching up, cause, it has always been God’s time. I just did not fully know or appreciate it. Recently on NPR, I heard three generations of Police Officers, Black Police Officers, starting from 1966 to 2021, talking about having hope for true Police Reform. I actually heard them talking truth about Baba going to work and walking into the precinct ENG rooms, where White police officers watch Fox news on the t.v. They talked fervently about all the negative positions that Fox spews. They talked about hearing White police officers saying they don’t believe that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris actually won the election and that Derek Chauvin should not have been convicted. I heard a Black woman police officer, actually say that the Police Chief that testified against Derek Chauvin for murdering brother George Floyd, should not get any credit, because that Police Chief knew all along who Derek Chauvin was. She said for all the years that Derek Chauvin was on that police force, actually leading trainings for new police officers, that Chief could have fired him. That Black woman police officer said that Chauvin had amassed complaints, which that Police Chief knew about, but did nothing about. She said that negligence resulted in the murder of Brother Floyd. That Black woman, police officer, went so far as to say that had Chauvin not been convicted of murdering Brother Floyd he would have gone on to amass even more complaints for his brutality against Black people, violating the civil rights of people in our communities. She further highlighted that the Chief of Police deserved no credit, but rather condemnation for not removing Chauvin way before he had the chance to murder Floyd. To hear these truths coming from Black police officers gives me hope. That Black woman, police officer, kept saying that it takes the community to demand change to make it happen. For that I am grateful and encouraged that we, our community, can change the police departments and other institutions throughout this country, that were built on the racist beginning of the enslavement of African people. Think about that my people. All of these institutions that we know as racist can be changed. Especially, if we truly believe that police departments can be changed. The reasoning there being because we know that it has been the police departments throughout America that have supported and enforced the racism of every other institution - from the Paddy Rollers who were the first police, to the F.B.I under the avowed racist J. Edgar Hoover, to the Justice Department of donald trump and bill barr. We know this true history of law enforcement in America as protectors of the interests of White men who held Africans en-slaved, stole our labor, raped our women and kept our children as captives to this oppressor ideal of America the Great, the Great Devil. I say it’s about time that our people, Black men and Black women who work in these racist institutions, speak up and let our communities know about the truth of the racism and brutality they see and experience every day. Tell us, the community, so we can work with you to push for real change. With change from the outside we can get behind those people on the inside who are willing to stand up to make change really happen in ways that will make everyone’s life better, safer and more fulfilling because we are doing God’s work in God’s time. God bless the real Black police officers who truly love our people and are committed to treating everyone with the respect that their Black mothers, aunties, and grammas taught them. as a whole put up a valiant effort with a balanced scoring output. The day ironically belonged to a former Raptor. Oshae Brissett led both teams in scoring with 31 points. Domantas Sabonis the Pacers’ big man also chimed in with 25 points. So if you’re keeping track with Indiana playing for something their starters were on the floor for most of the game. The Raptors lost the game 125-113 on their home court away from home. Now back to Toronto’s aforementioned disadvantage. If you’ve ever seen The Wizard of Oz or The Wiz, the theme of returning home is prevalent. As it was for Raptors’ players all season long after being displaced to another country to live and play their home games. This has happened to all of us to an extent. Some of us were not able to go home because of fear of bringing Covid 19 back to our parents and family members. Some students were not able to go into school buildings where they felt most at home. Fred VanVleet said Tampa was a gracious host. But “it’s just not Toronto”. In other words it just not HOME! Because there really is no place like.....
