AREA BRIEFS Streets Named In Honor Of Dr. Rhonda Ricks Standing in front of The Forge on Broadway, Mayor Byron W. Brown, joined by Common Council President Darius Pridgen, New York State Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and others, announced two special street designations in honor of Dr. Rhonda Ricks. The late Dr. Ricks, President and CEO of R+A+R Development, passed away in June of 2019 after Dr. Ricks a hard-fought battle with cancer . Mayor Brown announced that a ceremonial trailblazing sign will go up later this month at the corner of Broadway and Mortimer Street in honor of Dr. Ricks, serving as a gateway to one of her signature projects, the Forge on Broadway. A private stretch of new roadway that cuts through The Forge on Broadway will be named Dr. Rhonda Ricks Way. “It's bittersweet renaming a street after my sister friend Dr. Rhonda Ricks, gone too soon but we cherish her memory. We call them Trailblazer Signs and it could not be more fitting, as she blazed a trail as the first woman and minority developer in the City of Buffalo and its East Side. She believed that everyone deserves to live in clean, upscale quality housing and her projects reflect that. I’m humbled and proud that a street is named in her honor, adjacent to one of her developments and close to where she grew up,” stated Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes. Her first project, Parkview Apartments, completed in 2017, was a tribute to her status as the first minority and women owned development firm in the region. Dr. Ricks also consulted on the construction of the Westminster Commons senior housing project at Adams and Monroe streets.

No Justice For Sister Jeanneie Last July Jeanneie Muhammad was assaulted by a hand-gun brandishing White man after a minor traffic incident. In early March 2020, just before COVID-19 was declared a national emergency , the courts found her attacker NOT GUILTY on all counts except one. On Wednesday Aug.5 he received two years probation.

O

n July 16 , 2019, an African American Muslim woman, Mrs. Jeanneie Muhammad was assaulted by a hand-gun brandishing White man, Jeffrey Calhoun, after a minor traffic incident on Sanders Road and Colvin Avenue in North Buffalo. Her keys were snatched out of her car, he tried to take her purse and a struggle ensued. Mrs. Muhammad was thrown to the ground and Calhoun drew a hand gun on her and residents who had come to her aid. Fortunately the incident was video taped by Precious Santiaga, and posted . Sister Jeannie suffered damage to Sister Jeanneie (center) with her daughters Zakiyah and Imanni. Challenger Photo her knee and a concussion. On that date supporters also brought into focus what they saw as a clear double standard in the way Buffalo police treated a “White man with a gun” vs “a Black or Brown man with a gun.” When the police finally did arrive, he (Calhoun) approached them to surrender. He reached into his waist and pulled the gun out and laid it on the police car as the cops ignored screams from onlookers of” he’s got a gun!” “So many of our people have been shot for less,” declared Bro. Dahveed Muhammad, Minister of Mosque No. 23 here in Buffalo. “We’ve been shot down for having toy guns and no guns at all.” It was a harrowing, traumatic, painful experience for the soft spoken, respected young African American Muslim mother and wife of Dahveed . , The trial itself created additional trauma. In early March just before COVID-19 was declared a national emergency in the united States - a jury had found Calhoun, 63, NOT GUILTY of unlawful imprisonment and menacing, both as hate crimes; unlawful imprisonment; and impersonating an officer. He was also found not guilty of misdemeanor assault. He was only charged with misdemeanor menacing. How does she feel about the outcome? “I feel terrible because I went through something that really affects me to this day,” she reflected. “I’m still suffering.” Even though it’s been a little over a year since she was assaulted. She said that her knee is still swollen and she suffers with anxiety and sleeplessness. “I’m not ok. I’m not 100%,” she admits. She credits her belief and strong faith in God with being able to persevere. Calhoun, her attacker, was scheduled for “sentencing” on Wednesday, August 5, where he faced up to a year in jail. The final outcome; He did not receive jail time, he received two years probation, one month with an ankle bracelet and his pistol permit was revoked during his probation. Two years probation for dehumanizing an innocent unarmed Black woman, wife and mother, wrestling her to the ground, impersonating a police officer, holding her against her will, pulling a gun and according to Sis. Jeanneie, he also used a racial slur (the "n" word) to refer to her. Before the sentencing, Sister Jeanne was allowed to read her victims impact statement to the courts. “Do I feel that I received justice?” she asked rhetorically. “No.” “I just go with God…with Allah, ”she concluded.

Who is Your Licensed "Professional" Real Estate Salesperson? Greetings to everyone! The real estate market is still in an active upward momentum. Here is some essential information for a "Homeowner and Potential Buyer" to navigate with selecting a Realtor. Let's get started: Generally most selections are through a "referral." A family member, close friend and coworker may suggest someone. This may be by word of mouth, email, text and other means of communication. Other times it may be by your choice or someone reaching out to you. What is best: ~Schedule an appointment with the suggested referral. If you should have more than one, feel free to interview them all. Doing this will allow all parties to share valuable information, allowing a future business connection to develop. Here are some suggested inquiries: ~ Office where they are Licensed ~ How long have they been in the real estate industry ~ Previous employment history ~ may be helpful information ~ Familiarity with the locations you will choose ~ Community awareness As you may decide on someone ask yourself......Who can be trusted with my personal information? Is my best interest being taken care of? Would you refer them and will you use them in the future? Just as a reminder, when an agent meets with someone, they are energetically prepared to acknowledge that your goal will be their focus! Sometimes the process can be overwhelming. Housing information will be presented, open concerns discussed/resolved, the mortgage loan approval process reviewed and marketing details to sell a home. Your trusted Realtor will take care of the process from start to finish. "Peace and Be Safe! Higgins Backs Community Effort to Reduce Gun Violence Congressman & Most Valuable Parents “MVP” Group Push for Tiahrt Amendment Repeal

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) is supporting a community effort to reduce gun violence in Western New York and across the nation. Last week Higgins held a virtual meeting with Most Valuable Parents (MVP) and other local leaders organizing the public campaign which includes a push to repeal the Tiahrt Amendment. Kimora Lynum

Black Girl, 9, Youngest Person To Die From Covid-19 In Florida A 9-year-old girl, who had no known underlying conditions, is the youngest person in Florida to have died from complications of the coronavirus. Kimora Lynum’s family said that despite tracing everyone they had been in contact with, they could not find a positive case leading to her infection. Kimora, who died in July is the fifth child in Florida to die from coronavirus. Kimora's family said she started feeling unwell on July 11. A few days later, her mother took her to the hospital, where she was given a urine test. She had a fever of 103 degrees, but they never tested her for coronavirus. Instead, her daughter was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and sent home. A few days later, after a family shopping trip, they returned home, ate, played video games, and Kimora asked to take a nap. Sadly, Kimora never woke up. Her family said that after she passed away, she tested positive for COVID-19. -PUBLIC MEETINGPublic Meeting Notice: There will be a meeting of the Board of the Westminster Community Charter School on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. If you are interested in participating, email info@ buffalopromiseneighborhood.org for further details.

As community leaders announced the effort in Western New York this week, Higgins championed their cause on the House floor, saying in part, “Members of my community are coming together to call on Congress to repeal provisions that prohibit our government from knowing if firearms have been lost or stolen. I support their call to action and urge this body to continue to work to make our communities safer for all. Many would still be with us today if legislation this House has passed - common sense gun reforms, universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons - were enacted into law. We can and must do better. Repeal the Tiahrt Amendment.” The Tiahrt Amendment, implemented in 2003, prohibits the National Tracing Center of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from releasing information from its firearms trace database. This policy limits the ability of law enforcement to investigate gun crimes and hold predatory gun dealers accountable. Higgins is a co-sponsor of HR 5917, which includes repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment, and supports other legislative vehicles aimed at reducing gun violence, including bills banning assault rifles, implementing universal background checks, offering gun buybacks, and allowing the Centers for Disease Control to research gun violence.

Let’s Reopen Schools, But Let’s Do It Safely By Jamal Bowman

The federal government has completely failed our children and our families throughout this entire pandemic. Now, as Donald Trump aims his fire at school districts that won’t haphazardly reopen, we don’t have to keep accepting his failures as the best we can do. Just because he is too incompetent to lead, doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t. In fact, the wellbeing of our kids, the health of our families, and the rehabilitation of our economy depend on it. First and foremost, you can't plan for a safe reopening when you can't pay for a safe reopening. So, where the hell is the money schools need? Congress needs to pass the HEROES Act with funding for school districts. Republicans in Congress have wasted months of time and billions of dollars, instead of creating safe solutions for our children. Not only do Republicans in Congress lack imagination, they lack compassion. As a public middle school principal, I know our schools are intimate communities within our greater communities. Reopening schools should not fall on just the shoulders of teachers and administrators. We need to have collaborative conversations with teachers, administrators, parents, students, physicians and all stakeholders. We need to create a plan for addressing and healing the collective traumas that our students and their families have faced during this unprecedented pandemic. Reopening will be a disaster, unless we come together now to create a cooperative plan that best meets everyone’s needs. It is the safety, health, and futures of our children, and our country, at stake here, and we can’t wait for Republicans to do their jobs. Our schools could be part of the problem, but I say let’s make them part of the solution. Let’s fight for funding to install proper ventilation systems to limit spreading the virus, and for supplies to keep our classrooms clean and safe. Let’s do as much COVID-19 testing, symptom monitoring, and contact tracing in our schools as possible. Let’s provide our students, teachers, and school workers with masks, that they can also use at home and in public. Let's be prepared to listen to public health experts and keep our class sizes as small as possible as we use creative solutions, like keeping windows and doors open, or educating in larger spaces like theaters. Let’s reopen schools, but let’s do it safely. Despite what our failing president says, the two are not mutually exclusive. Our children deserve an education, and they deserve to be healthy and safe. Period. Let’s make it happen Jamaal Bowman of Yonders, New York is a former public middle school principal and presumptive Democratic nominee for the 16th Congressional District in New York.

Howard J. Johnson Jr., Erie County Legislator and Chair of the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee, has sponsored a resolution requesting the reintroduction of public transit services to Alden. The Niagara Frontier Transport Authority’s (NFTA) Bus Route 27 provided regular transportation with a stop near the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden until 2014 when the NFTA terminated services. Johnson introduced the resolution after the Erie County Sheriff’s Office proposed closing or down-sizing the Erie County Holding Center as part of a cost-saving plan to remedy the $138 million County budget deficit due to COVID-19. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office sent a formal letter to the NFTA in June 2020 requesting the resumption of bus services to ensure “members of the public have sufficient access to their loved ones while incarcerated.” This request was subsequently denied in a response letter from the NFTA. Legislator Howard Johnson said, “While we are still considering the Sheriff’s plan, I think expanded bus service would be a benefit to the incarcerated population currently held in Alden and their family members. Access to family support and contact with close friends leads to lower recidivism and better overall mental health. Without public transportation from the metro area to Alden, we are leaving many in our community without a way to visit their incarcerated loved ones.”

PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY THE COUNTY OF ERIE BY ACTION IN REM IN REM NO. 168 NDEX NO. 2020-600128 IN THE MATTER OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY PROCEEDING IN REM PURSUANT TO THE IN REM PROVISIONS OF THE ERIE COUNTY TAX ACT AND THE RESOLUTION OF THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE AS SHOWN BY RESOLUTION NO. 42 AT PAGE 164 OF THE MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF SAID LEGISLATURE FOR THE YEAR 2020

_____________________________

Please take notice that on the 13th day of July, 2020 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law. The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 13th day of July, 2020. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County. EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such

liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof. PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services, and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption. RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 1st day of September, 2020 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument. LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 1st day of September, 2020. SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Such Answer must be filed in the office of the County Clerk and served upon the attorney for the Tax District, Margaret A. Hurley, Esq., Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman, LLP, 50 Fountain Plaza, Suite 1700, Buffalo, New York, 14202, (716) 8843135, on or before the 21st day of September, 2020. FAILURE TO REDEEM OR ANSWER: In the event of failure to redeem or answer by any person having the right to redeem or answer, such person shall be forever barred and foreclosed of all his or her right, title and interest and equity of redemption in and to the parcel described in the List of Delinquent Taxes and a judgment in foreclosure may be taken by default. he skillful crew at Carl-Jeff Barber Shop spans decades of talent and experience. A family-owned business that’s been servicing the community for over 60 years, it’s home to Jerry F. Daniels Sr., who, along with his son Jerry Jr. are co-proprietors. Jerry Sr. is not only founder and senior barber, but the most senior barber in the community - and very. possibly in the entire city. He's been barbering for 63 years and will celebrate his 88th birthday next Tuesday, August 11. More than likely he will be in the shop doing what he loves , even though he’s working only part time these days. “I still cut (hair) because it’s therapeutic,” he said. “I love people……I love to share ideas.” He has plenty of memories to relish. “I once cut Malcolm X’s hair,” he said proudly. “Malcolm Ernie (founder of the African Cultural Center) bought him to me….but he wasn’t the only celebrity. Every mans hair I cut is a celebrity! " Honored as the Challenger’s 2017 Barber of the Year , Jerry had this to say about the noble art of barbering: “Barbering is more than an occupation…It’s a ministry!” Happy Birthday Mr. Jerry! (Carl Jeff is located at 859 Jefferson Avenue at Carlton. For an appointment with Andrew, Jerry Jr., Jerry Sr., Ray or Larry call 886-9563. )

STOP PROTECTING ROGUE GUN DEALERS!

Speakers: From top left Neal Dobbins, Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood, Pastor Kenny Simmons; (middle row) Bishop Michael A. The law itself is criminal! It was also announced that Congressman Brian Higgins is on board and did in fact champion the community's call for the repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment last week on the House floor (see page 5). Speakers at the press rally included Mayor Bryon Brown, DA John Flynn, Bishop Michael A. Badger, Bishop Frederick Gelsey, Murray Holman, Sharon Belton-Cottman, Bro. Dahveed Muhammad, Pastor Kenny Simmons and Police Commissioner Bryon Lockwood. “The question at the forefront of this movement,” declared Dobbins, “ is where did they get the guns? We don’t have an assault rifle problem on the East side of Buffalo we have a hand gun problem…This community is flooded with handguns!.....We have to find strategies to stop these guns from coming into our community”…and everybody has to be a part of finding a solution, he said.

That was just the beginning of an unprecedented, unified effort to stop illegal guns from flooding our inner city communities. The Buffalo inititive has far reaching, national implications, given that the gun violence problem has reached epidemic proportions in inner cities across the nation. Bro. Neal Dobbins founder and president of MVP, gave a riveting introduction to the movement and outlined the framework of the organization’s “2020 Anti-Gun Violence Action Plan marked by the unification of all the front line anti-violence organizations; the formation of an Urban Think Tank; and an on going education component (i.e. the billboards).
