“ A Letter to The Children of the City of Rochester” From Mayor Lovely Warren State Supreme Justice J. Scott Odorisi has ruled that the referendum sought by Mayor Lovely Warren in reference to the future of City Schools is illegal. Mayor Warren wanted voters to decide whether a temporary state takeover of the City School District is needed, and was seeking a November referendum on the matter. The city filed a notice of appeal within four hours of the decision. Mayor Warren delivered the following Letter to the Children of the City of Rochester in response to RCSD lawsuit decision.

Can we count on YOU to be a part of this momentous event to challenge the world to PAY us what we deserve? Make sure you are sharing and posting on social media for YOUR chance to join the conversation. To the Children of the City of Rochester: Today is truly a sad day. You and your families have suffered for decades. Told to accept and be grateful for a broken system. A system that fails to educate and teach you the very knowledge necessary to succeed. A system that leaves far too many of you without a fighting chance at life. A system that denies you access to even a faint glimmer of the American dream. The recent court decision is a grave injustice. But, unfortunately, I am not surprised. I am sure that you are not surprised. It is just the most recent example where adults twist and abuse the law to protect themselves – at you and your family’s expense. You are the unseen, the unheard, the forgotten. You live, struggle and suffer while politicians, bureaucrats and the supposed givers of charity profit and pay only lip service, if that, to your reality. It’s no accident that the court filings of the school district fail to mention you and your families. Not once are you the concern of school district and its lawyers. Because this court case was about one thing: denying you the right to be heard. Denying your parents and grandparents the right to vote. Protecting their ability to profit while continuing to deny you opportunity. What is happening in Rochester is no different than what is happening in Washington. We have the powerful working every day to protect the status quo and deny you the opportunity to live to your fullest potential. Why? I believe they see you as a threat. That denying you a quality education is the only way to protect what they have. That is truly sad and shameful. Because I know that we can, and we will, one day, lift each other up. That your very education is the key to a better city, a better community and better nation for all. That your success is what will deliver and strengthen the American Dream for all people regardless of where we were born, what we look like or who we love. I will continue to fight every day to achieve this vision; to dismantle what is broken and build together a system that will provide you a quality education and a fighting chance at life. We will appeal this unjust court decision. We will take this fight to the halls of Albany and demand our legislators act. We will ensure that your voice is heard, and you are provided the education and opportunity that are your right.

is needed … For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.” Douglass spoke of our nation, certainly the same applies to our community today. I ask all of you to heed his words and recommit ourselves to this fight. We cannot rest until each of you has access to knowledge necessary to fully share in the future of our city and, indeed, the entirety of the American Dream. Join me in this fight. Don’t despair, but work hard and, together, let our voices be heard in every hall of power. Together, we will deliver the change that builds better schools, a better city and a better community for all. Because as Douglass said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand.” Sincerely, Mayor Lovely A. Warren

We know that we will win this fight because we have won before. In our very city, our guid-

ast Monday 3-time Purple Heart recipient, Vietnam War Veteran William Roland Hayes, received a long overdue honor during a beautiful ceremony at the Naval and Military Park. Mr. Hayes, whose heroic actions earned him three Purple Heart medals after being wounded on separate occasions in battle, and a Bronze Star, received his medals in the mail after he was honorably discharged and returned home to Buffalo. On July 29 Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, formally presented Mr. Hayes his medals at a special ceremony. As a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, he arrived in Vietnam in 1967 and started out as a cook. After being disrespected by a White sergeant, which resulted in words between the two, he was sent to the front lines as an "infantryman in a demolition platoon” as punishment. Although combat nearly cost him his life, he ended up a hero. He received a standing ovation from family, friends and well-wishers who gathered to witness the presentation. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to the VA System in his remarks, adding, "Every time you see a Vet, remember, all Vets have story that needs to be told for history, for family and country." Congratulations Mr. Hayes! (Challenger Photos)

K

ing Mansa Musa I (Emperor Moses) was an important Malian king, ruling from 1312 to 1337 and expanding the Mali influence over the Niger city-states of Timbuktu, Gao, and Djenne. Musa ruled the Mali Empire and was estimated to have been worth the equivalent of $400 billion in today’s currency, which makes him the richest man to ever walk this earth. The emperor was a master businessman and economist, and gained his wealth through Mali’s supply of gold, salt and ivory, the main commodities for most of the world during that time. Musa maintained a huge army that kept peace and policed the trade routes for his businesses. His armies pushed the borders of Mali from the Atlantic coast in the west; beyond the cities of Timbuktu and Gao in the east; and from the salt mines of Taghaza in the north to the gold mines of Wangar in the south. Musa was also a major influence on the University of Timbuktu, the world’s first university and the major learning institution for not just of Africa but the world. Timbuktu became a meeting place of poets, scholars and artists of Africa and the Middle East. Even after Mali declined, Timbuktu remained the major learning center of Africa for many years. “Our history did not begin in chains. It will not end in chains.”

CNN reports the shooter 24-year-old Connor Betts wore a bulletproof vest and hearing protection the night he stormed the popular nightlife district in downtown Dayton. In a span of 30 seconds, the gunman fatally shot his own sister and injured at least 27 others. Police killed Betts within 30 seconds of him opening fire, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl told reporters. Most of the victims, whose ages ranged from 27 to 57 years old, were Black. They include Lois Oglesby, Saeed Saleh, Derrick Fudge, Logan Turner, Nicholas Cumer, Thomas McNichols, Beatrice Warren-Curtis, Monica Brickhouse, and Megan Betts, the shooter’s sister. Young Hero in El Paso Massacre Had to Prove He Wasn’t the Shooter… Army Pfc. Glen Oakley, a young African American, is being heralded as a hero for his role in saving kids caught in the mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, this weekend. As chaos descended on the mall, Oakley spotted a group of children running around the parking lot without their parents. “Only thing I think of is pick up as many kids I can as possible,” Oakley said. Which is what he did. “I was just focused on the kids, I wasn’t really worried about myself. So I just put my head down and just ran as fast as I could,” the soldier told CNN. But there’s one more detail Oakley shared with reporters. After spotting police, Oakley, who was armed, said he let the three kids he was holding go and pulled out his phone “in case they were going to shoot me and started recording while I was running.” He also told KTSM TV he showed officers the clip in his gun was full to prove he wasn’t the shooter.

Breathing Techniques for Increased Energy If you’re used to heading straight for the coffee pot every morning, give this a try instead. The Stimulating Breath Technique is a caffeine-free way to give your body and mind an extra little boost. This traditional breathing exercise is used often in yoga, and stimulates the diaphragm. energize the body, clarify the mind . Here’s how to do it: Sit up tall, and relax your shoulders. Keep your mouth closed and inhale rapidly through your nose with quick, short breaths (exhale quickly as well). Try doing that for about 10 seconds. Take a 15-30 second break and breathe normally. Repeat several times.

Mineral That Improves Overall Health Most commonly chromium is associated with the metabolic process and insulin transportation but its health benefits are more than these two. Chromium actually aids the body in carrying out all its functions to promote overall health and deficiency of this mineral can easily happen if you eat a poor processed food diet. In a perfect world, we would get plenty through a healthy diet since chromium (and all minerals) are naturally found in mineral-rich soil. However, due to the way farming practices have changed over the years, we have to be more aware of our food choices in order to obtain enough vitamins and minerals. Organic farming methods improve your chances at obtaining healthy foods richer in nutrients, but it’s also important to focus on mostly plant-based foods versus processed foods to gain more benefits. Most fruits and veggies contain a low but effective amount of chromium to add to your daily diet: All plant based foods, vegetables (especially corn, beets, broccoli, ,romaine lettuce and peaches), steel-cut oats, barley tomatoes, beans green beans, black pepper, beans, grape juice, mashed potatoes bananas, orange juice, prunes, hazelnuts, asparagus, dried garlic. For those highly deficient in the mineral foods, eat foods that contain high amounts of chromium like organ meats turkey, tuna and other fish. Some of the things chromium does in the body include: Regulates and improves blood sugar, helps build muscle, reduces cholesterol, improves heart health, lowers blood pressure, assists with weight loss and craving prevention, attributes to healthy brain, helps promote skin health, assists with liver function, promotes nutrient absorption, helps retain calcium in the bone. *If you want to start chromium supplements consult a physician first.

Breast Implants Linked to Rare Cancer Are Recalled Worldwide Textured breast implants made by Allergan that have been linked to an unusual cancer are being recalled in the United States at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, and will also be recalled globally, the agency announced on Wednesday. The F.D.A. decision, based on an increasing number of cases and deaths from the implant-associated cancer, lags far behind action in Europe, where the Allergan devices were effectively banned late last year. Worldwide, 573 cases and 33 deaths from the cancer have been reported, with 481 of the cases clearly attributed to Allergan Biocell implants, the F.D.A. said. Of the 33 deaths, the agency said its data showed that the type of implant was known in 13 cases, and in 12 of those cases the maker was Allergan. Breast enlargement is the most popular type of plastic surgery in the United States, with more than 300,000 operations performed in 2017, a 3 percent increase over 2016, according to the most recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. About 100,000 other women received implants in 2017 during reconstructive surgery after mastectomy for breast cancer in the United States. NYT

Glenwood House: A House With a Legacy of Soul and Service

Pastor Charles H. & First Lady Minister Kendra M. Walker ll Hosting Their 8th Annual Pastoral & Church Anniversary Revival Celebration

Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers (BFNC) Residential Housing Provides a Helping Hand for Independence By Bethany Cercone “Being the Queen is not all about singing, and being a diva is not all about singing. It has much to do with your service to people. And your social contributions to your community and your civic contributions as well.” – Aretha Franklin

B

uffalo’s Glenwood Avenue home where a young Aretha Franklin spent summers in the 1940s is now known as the Glenwood House, a modern refuge for individuals in need of assistance. The musically historical home on Buffalo’s East Side Fruit Belt neighborhood, a six-bedroom residence managed by the BFNC, has been under renovation for the past four years. Residents, as many as 10, learn to live independently and receive counseling, financial training, and even master the culinary arts. Jermaine Patterson, the BFNC Director of Residential Services, undersees the Glenwood House as part of the BFNC residential programs. “We practice household tasks such as cooking and cleaning that can help them become independent. We work with them once a night on these responsibilities, even going as out with them to grab every aspect of a meal from scratch to finish,” said Patterson. If the residents are interested in finding jobs, the BFNC works to help them with the process – from writing resumes, interviewing, and landing a position. Glenwood House Community Residence Aides specialists also help each resident with budgeting and financial literacy. “We try to do every aspect of programming for the client to make it easier for them,” he said. One of the main goals of the programming is to prepare the resident's to have all the skills they need to start a new life chapter with success. This training prepares people to relocate to another residence with fewer services. Eventually, the goal is for clients residents to live completely on their own. Patterson’s ambition for the residents is empowering: “The most important thing is the confidence and level of independence that they gain when they leave. They should be able to say, ‘I’ve done this, I can do this, and I can do all the things I learned at the Glenwood house.” As we come towards the first anniversary of Franklin’s passing, it is no coincidence that her legacy of social and civic contributions continues to live on in her old Buffalo home.

Buffalo House Music Festival : The Start of A New Exciting Groove for WNY The Nursing Home: Stag Play Raises Awareness about Staffing Shortage and other Realities

DJ CES far left and just a few of the more than 200 guests that came through Buffalo's First Annual House Music Fest held Last Saturday in Downtown Buffalo Sublime, jack-your-body rhythms echoed throughout the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor when the first annual Buffalo House Music Fest went down outside the Power 96.5 Studios this past Saturday, August 3. Hosted and conceived by Buffalo’s own DJ Ces (Cecelie Owens), the six hour festival, which featured guest DJ Steve Oh Traxxx (from Brooklyn) and Dexter Warren, took dancers and listeners on a soulful journey through both classic and modern house sounds. Shaun Escoffrey’s “Days Like This” was a more than inspired selection as guests made their way into the WUFO lot on the balmy, summer afternoon. Veteran house heads and newcomers alike got down to the irresistible grooves in the sunshine: many rocking Buffalo House Music Fest T-shirts that were generously gifted to the first 100 attendees. All three DJ’s spun seamless and varied sets and Ces proved a most gracious and knowledgeable host urging everyone on the dance floor while Matt “Project Access To A-Free-Ka” co-host Ras Muota helped hype the apBAUER preciative crowd, which got a nice history lesson in Warren’s set when he spun Karen Young’s “Hot Shot” and the disco/house “National Anthem” aka MFSB’s “Love Is The Message.” While the festival was initially promoted as an annual event, there’s good news if you weren’t able to make it out this time: as the day wound down, Ces announced there will be another even this fall! Let’s hope that this is the start of a new and exciting groove for house music in WNY.

n a male-dominated industry, Latisa “Lisa” Roosevelt is illustrating the great potential women possess. “Women are strong and we are very independent and I don’t think we get the credit that’s due” said Roosevelt when asked about being the owner of Buffalo’s newest restaurant. Lisa is the sole owner of The Rose Bar and Grille, located at 199 Scott Street; a new establishment which has taken the restaurant industry by storm. As Buffalo native and registered nurse at a NYS facility, Lisa saw herself giving more in the form of ‘customer service’. “I am very friendly –my husband and I are both very friendly people. We can walk into a restaurant or public place and start a conversation with someone and you would think we knew them for like 20 years!” Knowing all blessings flow from God, Lisa had an epiphany of owning a place where people of all backgrounds could enjoy great food, a warm atmosphere and hear some of Buffalo’s finest local artists. Her previous experience of operating a local tavern is what inspired her to seek an elegant venue that would cater to all of WNY. Once she stepped into the venue inside the Fairmont Creamery [formerly The Mahony], she was overwhelmed. Although it was everything she prayed for, she was skeptical because of its large size. “When I walked into it, it was just what I was looking for, but as I walked further I was like, this is too big! I wanted something elegant yet comfortable, you know, where you have a warm feeling when you walk in.” Never backing down from a challenge, and always believing God answers prayer, Lisa knew this venue was the right place for her and her vision. “…This [The Rose] worked out because everyone who comes in here says they feel comfortable … like they’re at home.” Choosing the name for her new place was easy. The Rose is a classy abbreviated version of her last name, Roosevelt. While Lisa is the sole-owner of The Rose, she credits her husband, Chris,

with his continuous love and support. Chris, a former liquor salesman, can be seen daily at The Rose, helping behind the bar, greeting customers, and assisting staff. Lisa feels his support, along with her dedicated staff, is what makes The Rose the inviting, warm and elegant restaurant she prayed and worked so hard for. “He is here every single day and he is working hard at helping me make this restaurant business thrive and I don’t take that for granted,” she continued. Lisa also credits other family members who work tirelessly to ensure her vision is seen and felt. They include her nephew, Aaron Staples, who serves as Manager; her sister, Tameka Milline and her son, Mario, who both work behind the scenes. Lisa’s Mom, Gladys Diji, can also be found at The Rose, on any given day, assisting staff and greeting patrons. Lisa knows where all of her help comes from, and for that she is truly grateful. “I tell people all the time, it’s a new business and I plan to make this longevity.” Lisa first opened the doors of The Rose on February 20, 2019, and celebrated a Grand Opening on May 2nd that featured delicious food, cocktails, two DJ’s and special guest saxophonist, Will Holton. It definitely was a ‘Who’s-Who’ type of celebration! Mayor Byron Brown deemed May 2, 2019 as The Rose Day! With a full capacity of 293, The Rose hosts a wide-variety of private parties and events. When Buffalo native, Venzella Joy (Beyoncé’s drummer), was in town, she hosted a

viewing party at The Rose for the debut of her documentary, Homecoming. Needless to say, it was a packed house. Ms. Venzella enjoyed The Rose so much that on two of her recent visits home she made a point to stop through! But she’s not the only famous face that experienced The Rose and its delicious food and warm atmosphere. Buffalo’s own, Stevie J, from Atlanta’s Love & Hip Hop stopped by with a few of his friends. So you never know who you’ll run into at The Rose. “Our commitment is making sure our customers leave here knowing they had a great experience so they will tell others and they continue to come back.” The Rose will continue to offer various events, such as monthly guest appearances from local artists, and an upcoming special ‘All White Party.’ It will feature two DJ’s, live entertainment, delicious hors d’oeuvres and more. Be sure to check out their website

and Facebook page for the All White Party date and other upcoming special events. Lisa’s humbling spirit is of someone who doesn’t seek to be the best or greatest restaurant business for applause and accolades, but a loving and warm spirit who seeks to bless a community, through her business, in which God and the community has blessed her. “I just want Buffalo to know that we’re here,” she concluded, “a Black-Womanowned restaurant, with a very supportive husband. This really is a place that has great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, and awesome customers.” For hours of operation, please visit www.therose-buffalo.com or call 716-424-2007. Lisa sincerely thanks her customers for their support, and TJC PR Consultants (Tracy Jordan-Cardwell) for her instrumental behind-the-scenes assistance. See you at The Rose!

Deltas Announce 2019 HBCU Tour Date And Columnist Calls for a PUBLIC ART: “A Closed Mouth Don’t Get FED” and Peace Day on Application For Graduating High School Seniors Unity onsulting with a respected community leader about my concerns Labor Day Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Buffalo Alumnae Chapter has announced that applications are available for the 28th annual Dr. Mattie L. Rhodes College Preparatory Program and Historically Black College (HBCU) Tour. Applications are available on the chapter website: www.dstbuffalo.org.An orientation will be held for interested parents and students on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at 6 PM at the Delavan Grider Community Center, 877 E Delavan Ave. The 5-week long program will culminate with a tour of HBCU’s in the Maryland and Washington, DC area, including Morgan State University, Bowie State, Coppin State and Howard University from October 9 –13th. As an added experience, students will have the opportunity to attend a university homecoming celebration. The purpose of the preparatory program and college tour is to: 1.Provide high school juniors and seniors with information to enhance their success at an institution of higher learning and, 2.To provide awareness of HBCU campuses that the students may have not otherwise considered for college. The Program is open to high school juniors and seniors in Erie, Niagara and Monroe County. The cost to participate is $415 per student with a non-refundable $150 deposit due/postmarked by Friday, August 16, 2019.

Columnist Eva M. Doyle would like to encourage the community to join in a National Day of Unity and Peace on Labor Day, 2019. “This is a call for African Americans to come together to rally around a day without killing and violence,” said Ms. Doyle. “I would like to urge those involved to stop the killing. Put down the guns for this day. No violence on this day. On Monday, September 2nd stay in your own community and support Black business to show our economic strength. Since this is Labor Day, take time to honor the sacrifice of our ancestors who worked as unpaid captive laborers for hundreds of years. Their labor built this country.” She concluded: “I would hope this would continue. It will not solve all of the problems, however, it might change a few minds and lead to a better community for all." In addition to this campaign, Mrs. Doyle plans to create an Anti-Violence Billboard. For more info call (716) 847-6010 or send an email message to ewriter52@aol.com.

and whether I should speak out, he said, “ a closed mouth don’t get FED.” Addressing the Public and Public Art issue began with many heated and passionate discussions with local African American visual artists, especially our young talent seeking answers to their many questions. As a senior artist in our community, their frustration was nothing new to me. Their issues are historical experiences shared by myself and artists before me. These issues were often the topic of conversations with my mentors William Y. Cooper and William West Sr. It is unbelievable that obstacles they faced in the 50s and 60s are still prevalent in 2019. Twenty-five years ago as a graduate student at Buffalo State College my master's paper documented in detail the need for respect, equity, diversity and inclusion in a multicultural community. We all owe a great deal to those before us that made a cultural stand that we benefit from today. By no means am I comparing or measuring my small actions with the historical sacrifices they made. I just feel it’s time to take a stand for the local African artists and our community by taking actions and exposing the Public Art old boy’s club method of operation. The purpose of my many public and private meetings was to share my experiences and inform our community with facts. I used myself personally as an example of the relationship between artist and community such as: •My 4th grade BPS #37 teacher recognized and made me aware of my talent. •Pastor William Gillison gave me the opportunity to collaborate with him on the stain glass windows for Mt Olive Baptist church. •-Buffalo Juneteenth selected me as the artist to represent them in Washington DC at the National Juneteenth exhibit, which lead to my Negro Baseball series being summited for US Postal Stamps. •It was because of community insistence that I, along with 2 other local African American artists, was selected for the FREEDOM WALL Project. What do all these experiences have in common? Community support! I further discuss in detail funding and resources for art organizations, developers and institutions. They receive tax breaks, contributions, donations and grants - millions of taxpayers’ dollars. We’re offered pennies while they make money. In response to our meetings I’m hearing a lot about community outreach and strategic plans: hollow words which are used to qualify for funding. ENOUGH is ENOUGH. We need less empty words and more action. The local African American artists and their community expect and deserve results not continued promises. Disrespect on Hallowed Ground: A 2019 Underground Railroad Experience BY KEVIN COTTRELL

My apologies go out to Mrs. Billie Todd and her group “To be your best Travel LLC” (a group of retired educators) who had to witness what was probably the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered in my 20-years of conducting tours of the Underground Railroad for Motherland Connextions. The incident occurred at the celebrated Underground Railroad Heritage Center on July 24, 2019. On that day my group witnessed an executive staffer pulling me aside in the middle of the tour experience to accuse my company, Motherland Connextions, of exploiting the center when I was merely using the public space in the lobby to interpret the history to make sure my group would know what to look for once inside. I was even accused of cheating on admissions. Then there was a personal dig on my integrity of 26-years promoting and making sure our history is on the map for everyone’s consumption. The latter took me to a dark place I had never been before as I experience the tour being conducted by someone who just recently learned to spell the word “Underground Railroad,” interpreted information from a book, and was new to this historical experience with all its nuances many of which she can never know. At that point it took everything in me to keep it together and stay professional for the sake of my clients who were being totally disrespected. That hurt the most because part of my service is shielding my clients from this type of treatment. So I abruptly walked away from the conversation (attack) at that point. The executive director prior to this encounter had just welcomed our group in, offered to do a quick orientation and overall was very accommodating as she has always been with my groups in the past. So why this staff member decided to go rouge is anybody’s guess but it’s my obligation to call it out! Motherland Connextions takes great strides in making sure the visitor experience is always 100%. This staff person was more concerned about housekeeping and other personal issues concerning me and my company - not customer service - at the expense of my clients who had to witness the encounter that she provoked. The prudent and professional thing to do by this executive staffer would have been to have that conversation with me at a later date and not in front of paying customers, who again witnessed the encounter then asked me what was happening as I returned to the bus. So now there was an additional 56-other paying customers from Kentucky – Motherland Connextions guests who will most likely post on this negative issue. Promoting the U.S. side of Niagara Falls is tough enough without unprofessional and petty encounters like this. My work on the Underground Railroad dates back to 1993 when myself and 9-other people followed the Old Harriet Tubman Trail from Guildford North Carolina to St. Catharine’s Ontario. The National Parking Service came in to be part of our culmination in St. Catharine’s. That pilgrimage gave rise to the awareness of Underground Railroad history in the region and to the birth of the Underground Railroad Center today. Sadly I will probably have to think twice about bringing my groups to the Center which is rated a 5-star and plays a very important role in the interpretation of the Underground Railroad in the Niagara Falls Area and was birthed from the work I began some 26-years ago. Overall the staff is excellent and has always been accommodating. However this one particular executive staffer seems to be more hung-up on interpretation than the total visitor experience with no understanding of respect into that equation. What’s mind boggling – this executive staffer has told me that I bring the most groups to the Center, so why the disrespect? This staff member is in desperate need of hospitality and sensitivity training. If you want to know what people are saying about Motherland Connextions read our reviews via Trip-advisor, Groupon, our web site and Facebook pages. We New-world abolitionist will continue to push on in the name of those ancestors who came before us!!! (Mr. Cotrell,of Niagara Falls, is the Station Master of Motherland Connextions)

Muslim Advocates Condemn Infrastructure of Hate Dear Editor: President Trump, Fox News and congressional Republicans are recklessly wielding anti-Muslim bigotry and racism as political tools and are encouraging hate and violence in the process. Recently Fox & Friends aired a story about Somalis arrested for wanting to join ISIS, prompting the president to tweet about Somali refugees wishing for ‘another 911.’ This follows weeks of Republican attacks on immigrants and Ilhan Omar that include Rand Paul saying that he is 'dumbfounded how unappreciative she is of our country' and Marco Rubio tweeting a deceptively edited video intended to make Omar look like an anti-White bigot. This formula also led to a bigoted anti-Black tirade from Trump directed at civil rights leaders and the people of Baltimore. This is how the Infrastructure of Hate works. Fox News and social media companies profit off of bigotry, Trump is making this hate the core message of his 2020 campaign and Senators like Paul and Rubio are excusing and amplifying it—all while racial and religious minorities are targeted for threats and hate crimes. Remember, President Trump already caused Rep. Omar to receive death threats by tweeting a video that outrageously tied her to 9/11. This has gone too far. These are not just political attacks. This is vicious, intentional racism that threatens the safety of immigrants and people of color as well as the very soul of our nation. Republicans, Democrats, the media and all Americans need to forcefully and consistently denounce this hatred as well as everyone who excuses and encourages it. n July 28, a 19-year-old White man named Santino William Legan opened fire at a garlic festival in Gilroy, California killing three people and injuring 13 others before taking his own life. As the Daily Beast reported, just before the shooting Legan “posted a picture with a caption that told followers to read a 19th-century, proto-fascist book.” As the site explained: “The book, which is repeatedly recommended alongside works by Hitler and other fascists on forums like 8chan, is full of antiSemitic, sexist and White supremacist ideology. The book glorifies ‘Aryan’ men, condemns intermarriage between races, and defends violence based on bogus eugenicist tropes.” Saturday, a 21-year-old White man identified by the police as Patrick Crusius walked into a crowded Walmart in El Paso and opened fire, killing 22 people and injuring more than two dozen others, some children. It was a massacre. As The New York Times reported, “Nineteen minutes before the first 911 call” about the shooting at the Walmart, “a hate-

filled, anti-immigrant manifesto appeared online.” CNN reports that authorities are investigating the racist screed which “police believe” was posted by Crusius. The manifesto is heavily anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic. It’s riddled with the fear of White “displacement” and fear that changing demographics will favor Democrats and turn America into “a one party-state.” And then on Sunday, a 24-year-old man named Connor Betts opened fire in Dayton, Ohio, killing nine people and injuring at least 27 others. According to news reports, most of those killed were Black. We are reminded that this summer is the 100th anniversary of the “Red Summer,” when some of the worst violence in U.S. History against African Americans took place in 1919, mostly in cities and towns across the South and Northeast. Violent antiBlack White supremacists rioted in cities across the country, killing many, just as the Great Migration — the mass migration of millions of Black people mostly from the rural South to

the urban North — was getting underway. Violence is the way the White terrorists respond to demographic shifts and demographic threat. It’s not simply a matter of whether Trump’s rhetoric, or that of any other politician, led these shooters to do what they did. Maybe. It is also about recognizing that all of these people are on the same team and share the same mission and eat from the same philosophical trough. It’s just that their methods differ. The White supremacist terrorists and the White supremacist policymakers are bound at the hip. Please note: This national nightmare is NOT being brought by Muslims, BlackAmericans. Brown peoples or the poor. It is being committed by White Americans urged on by a sick supremacist ideology and Americans in positions of infuence and power. We continue to see how racism against Black Americans provides a foundation for prejudice against other communities of color today.

RISE UP RIGHT SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Toni Morrison, 'Beloved' Author and Nobel Laureate, Dies at 88 Welcome to Rise Up Right, where we give you the best sports news and highlights, and updates taking full circle in the sports world. Thank you for your continued support....and with that being said Let's Rise Up....

Buffalo Bills News Terrible news coming out of training camp this week LaAdrian Waddle will miss the entire 2019 season with a torn quad injury. LaAdrian Waddle most likely would have been in the swing tackle position for 2019. More injuries have plagued the bills this training camp as Mitch Morse is currently under concussion protocol. Reports have said that he has had issues in the past with concussions. Jason Croom and Dawson Knox both have hamstring injuries and EJ Gaines has a groin injury. Watch out Buffalo, we don't need any more players walking off the field and quitting at half time due to a groin injury. An unofficial roster has surfaced in which here is a quick glimpse of what it looks like. The 1st team offensive line is as follows:Dion Dawkins, Quinton Spain, Russell Bodine, Cody Ford, Ty Nsehke. The Buffalo Bills have stated that they are looking to put the best 5 linemen on the field come week 1 of the NFL season. Ed Oliver has been playing with the 1st team defense and looks to remain on the 1st team defense throughout the preseason and into the regular season. Players to Watch Out for During Preseason: 1. Zay Jones Zay Jones being one of the players who was injured during training camp finds himself in a cage full of hungry receivers. It has been reported that the team has big expectations for Jones this season but could Jones find his self on the outside looking in as Robert Foster and others look to make an impact? 2. Tommy Sweeney As training camp is coming to an end and the preseason starts on Thursday, Sweeney will be looked at a lot as Dawson Knox looks to regroup from a hamstring injury. Reports have said that Sweeney has done a great job in training camp and is very likely to gain a roster spot with the Bills. 3. Mitch Morse Mitch Morris is now on concussion protocol. The Buffalo Bills offered Morris a 4 year 44.5 million dollar deal that includes in 11 million dollar signing bonus and an average salary of 11.125 million. Many reports have broken that this is a chronic issue that Mitch has had. Did the Bills make a mistake in signing Morse as again the Bills are dealing with another offensive lineman who has health issues? Bills Mafia will be looking closely to see what happens with Mitch Morse. The Bills 1st preseason game will be against the Indianapolis Colts this Thursday. What What outcome do you expect from the game? What players will step up in a big way? What players will disappoint? All questions that will be answered after Thursday night.

In Other Sports News The Buffalo Bisons current record is 58-55 with 13 home games remaining. Will the Bisons make the post season? They play on the road against Toledo and Columbus for 3 game road stands this week. WIll the Bisons gain ground on Durham who currently has a 5 game lead in the Wild Card . The UB Bulls Football program will look to further their success from last season as they went 10-3 and made their way to the Dollar General Bowl. Toni Morrison, author of seminal works of literature on the black experience such as "Beloved," "Song of Solomon" and "Sula" and the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize, has died,. She was 88. Morrison's novels gazed unflinchingly on the lives of African Americans and told their stories with a singular lyricism, from the post-Civil War maelstrom of "Beloved" to the colonial setting of "A Mercy" to the modern yet classic dilemmas depicted in her 11th novel, "God Help the Child." Her talent for intertwining the stark realities of black life with hints of magical realism and breathtaking prose gained Morrison a loyal literary following. She was lauded for

her ability to mount complex characters and build historically dense worlds distant in time yet eerily familiar to the modern reader. Themes such as slavery, mi-
