The Flower City Arts Center (FCAC) Board of Directors announced Cheryl McKeiver as the Center’s new Executive Director. McKeiver’s professional experience encompasses decades of leadership roles in finance, operations management, in academia, for-profit, and non-profit organizations throughout New York State. Additionally, McKeiver has held numerous positions within Citibank at their corporate offices in New York City and Richmond, VA. first playoff game since 1995 with a tough defensive stand and the Indianapolis Colts misuse of their timeouts. Stefon Diggs caught 6 passes for 128 yards and Dawson Knox caught his first career playoff TD on a 3-yard reception. Bills QB Josh Allen became the fifth player in NFL history for passing, receiving, and rushing TD in their playoff careers. Allen has grown a lot this NFL season but his inability to get rid of the ball is a glaring problem. He continues to be very careless with the football and it almost cost him against the Colts. Thank goodness Bills right tackle Daryl Williams recovered a fumble for a 23-yard loss. When Josh is under pressure during key points of a game it will tell the story of his true abilities. The Bills running game must step up their play with possibly adding TJ Yeldon and An-
Cheryl comments, “I come to the FCAC with great enthusiasm knowing this organization was succeeding in its mission to transform lives through art. I believe that through art and FCAC’s creative and dynamic programming-people come together and are inspired to put beauty back into the world. “It is with great joy and honor to be named Executive Director, and I look forward to working with the Board and staff to strengthen partnerships between the artists and the broader community. I believe there’s an artist in each of us that just needs a bit of nurturing-and that’s the power of our accessible, engaging, and educational programs at FCAC!” About the Flower City Arts Center The Flower City Arts Center, now in its 51st year, is a community-based 501(c)3 not-for-profit Educational institution that educates, encourages, and inspires all people to create and enjoy the visual arts. a shot in the arm. TJ Yeldon started at University of Alabama and has played in many big games in college and the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars. I also like how runner Antonio Williams performed against Miami Dolphins two weeks ago scoring two touchdowns. The Bills must find some guards during offseason due to the fact that Ike Boettger can’t get it done at the left guard position. The Bills have also played Brian Winters on one leg and injuries, which has diminished the abilities of the former Pro Bowler. The Bills General Manager traded away second year guard Wyatt Teller to the Cleveland Browns for a 5th & 6th round picks in 2020 draft. Teller is now highly regarded as one of the best young Guards in the NFL. Teller had an outstanding game, blocking for Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, in upsetting an underachiev-
Bills did get in return at 5th pick QB Jake Fromm and 6th round pick Isiah Hogkins, who can be a quality wide receiver in the coming years. The right side of the line, Jon Feliciano and Daryl Williams, started to show wear and tear as Colts defensive front put constant pressure on them. They did get the job done and allowed QB Josh Allen to throw down field. The Bills defensive line allowed 163 rushing yards to a very good Colts team. The tackling was horrible, Pro football Focus counted 12 missed tackles by Bills defense. The Colts gained 472 yards and seemed to have the Bills defense on their heels all day. The Bills must upgrade their offensive and defensive lines in the off season. Is it me or has anyone heard Mario Addison’s name called for making a play on defense yet? I can’t remember defensive series all season where he was a dominating force on defense. The Bills really miss Star Lotulelei at nose guard, Jordan Phillips, and Shaq Lawson on defensive front. The Bills will face Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night at Bills Stadium starting at 8 15
PM. Ravens Lamar Jackson, Gus Edwards, and JK Dobbins will run the football all night long with a limited passing game. The Bills must take advantage of a banged up secondary of Ravens with Josh Allen going deep down

AREA BRIEFS Judge Russell Announces Plans to Retire Judge Robert T. Russell recently announced plans to retire. Judge Russell, one of the longest-serving and most innovative judges in the history of Buffalo City Court, said he expects to serve until midyear. His retirement will create a new vacancy to be filled in the November elections. Russell, 66, was first elected in 1991. During his stellar tenure he is responsible for starting a drug treatment court; a mental health court; and the nation’s first veterans’ treatment court. He is the recipient of numerous awards. There’s Still Time to Renew Your Expired Driver’s License Gov. Cuomo has ordered that all New York State driver’s licenses that have expired since March 1 will remain valid until at least Jan. 29 because of limited access to Department of Motor Vehicles offices which remain open by appointment only. However since November, expired vehicle registrations and inspections are no longer being extended.
BILLS PLAYOFFS continued from page 2 the field. The Bills must use Isaiah McKenzie more with some short passes to get him going. I was surprised that he was not used more against the Colts. I see the Bills defense not being able to slow down the Ravens running game and our offense not executing enough to come away with the win. If the Ravens make mistakes and turn the ball over that would be a recipe for the Bills to take advantage of them and win the game. Prediction: Ravens will defeat Bills 24-21. Legislator April Baskin Retains Legislature Chairmanship Democratic Majority Caucus Unanimously Supports Baskin’s Re-Election to Key Leadership Position
A
t the Erie County Legislature’s annual re-organization meeting on January 7 Legislator April N.M. Baskin, who represents Erie County’s District 2 in the City of Buffalo, was re-elected Chairwoman for the second year in a row. First elected to the Legislature in January of 2018, Baskin was immediately named Majority Leader by her Democratic colleagues. Baskin has led the Majority Caucus as Chairperson since May 2019 and received the unanimous vote of her Democratic Caucus members. “It is a great privilege and honor for me to have the support of my colleagues and the opportunity to continue to lead this honorable body. Throughout this next year, I know we will undoubtedly face additional hardships due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and the widening political divide between the electorate we represent, as evidenced by the riot last week at the US Capitol. I am grateful for all the good work we have done and which will continue in 2021. Democrats have repeatedly shown that we have the strength to govern fairly and effectively. We will continue on that path with a focus on equity and inclusion for all,” stated Chair Baskin. As Chair, Baskin is an ex-officio member of all the Legislature Committees and holds many key appointment positions to numerous county boards. She is also a member of the Erie County Industrial Development Agency’s (ECIDA) Policy Committee. Legislator Baskin was the youngest Chair selected to preside over the body upon her appointment and only the third African American woman to hold the post. Under Chair Baskin’s leadership, the Legislature has appropriated $600,000 for a body camera pilot in the Sheriff’s office, began a program entitled “Urban Initiatives” which has allocated millions in county funding to the City of Buffalo, and established the Erie County Corrections Specialist Advisory Board through a permanent local law which provides civilian oversight to the Office of the Sheriff. Recently, she has successfully advocated for public benefit funding for community organizations and non-profit groups, $100,000 for a PILOT East Side mental health respite center, $200,000 for additional lead poisoning intervention services for children, and $200,000 for abandoned and vacant home relief for struggling residents.

The following local clergy will be joining The Buffalo 5, and filling the broadcast with powerful prayer that will support their current court battle to gain an overturning of their wrongful 1977 murder indictment and convictions: • Bishop Michael A. If so, The Buffalo 5 will be set upon a path that will lead to the overturning of their indictment and convictions, which, ultimately, will lead to their exoneration.

We'v Seen That Mob Before... Ed. Note: When the violent mob descended on the White House last Wednesday, the sight shocked the nation and the world. For African Americans it was especially amazing to watch - yet hauntingly familiar; jarring our collective psyche as victims, historically, of thousands of lynchings and of deadly race riots that went unchecked for decades - even aided and abetted in many cases - by the law. We've seen the angry, hateful faces of that mob before… in Tulsa…..at Rosewood…in the burning of the Black orphanage in New York City... at the picnic lynchings...in the massacre in Atlanta …Ocoee, Florida…and countless other places unknown and known. Here are just a few, of the countless examples. •The Wilmington Massacre of 1898 was a mass riot and insurrection carried out by White supremacists in Wilmington, North Carolina on November 10, 1898; the violent overthrow of a duly elected government. They expelled opposition political leaders from the city, destroyed the property and businesses of Black citizens built up since the Civil War, including the only Black newspaper in the city, and killed an estimated 60 to more than 300 people. What happened in Wilmington became an affirmation of white supremacy. Continued Page 11

Despite Covid-19 Fruitbelt Coalition Continues to Deliver to Community Although the Fruitbelt Coalition Inc., (aka Fruit of the City) had to cancel many of their annual events due to COVID-19, that did not stop the giving! They disbursed bookbags with school supplies, educational materials and PPE supplies along with the B District Police Department. For Thanksgiving they helped over 60 families with free turkeys and dinner packages. They also partnered with Macedonia Baptist church and served communion to the community as well as PPE supplies. At the end of the year they down-sized their “Christmas in the City” event but still held a toy and goodie bag giveaway to families and their children all over the city. Great job Fruit of the City!

We’re not going to be done with social distancing any time soon. The World Health Organization has warned that herd immunity won’t happen in 2021, and social distancing measures will need to stay in place "for the rest of this year," despite vaccine progress. In the US, more than 200,000 new coronavirus cases have been reported every day for a week. In the UK, health officials say the country is entering the "worst point" of the pandemic, as cases rise and deaths increase. Malaysia has announced more restrictions, and South Africa has closed its land borders to curb the spread. At the San Diego Zoo, there's a new complication: At least two gorillas have tested positive for Covid-19, the first known cases among great apes.

Let's All Greet 2021!!! With "Heartfelt" emotions we give thanks, celebrate and prepare for the best of more to come. Following is a recap you may want to consider once you have been Pre-Approved by your Mortgage Loan Officer. ~ The current pre~approval should reflect the affordable amount to finance. This is derived from all the monthly verifiable gross income. ~If your finance situation changes, contact the loan officer to promptly update the information. Best to be prepared as homes appear on the market. ~You have access to the realtors website ~of homes sent directly to your email by means of the realtors ``Multiple Listing System." What comes next is, the agent will advise you as homes are listed. Be mindful your selection is based on the pre~approval amount. Always connect with your agent if homes of interest grab your attention. Homes are "going under contract" shortly after they appear live on real estate websites. Be first to submit a wise and reasonable offer! Your agent will negotiate your written offer with the homeowners agent. Most homeowners are interested in getting the price asked for, however, "multiple offers" do occur. Be prepared financially to come with "your highest and best offer." In this market, sufficient funds on hand would be great. Income tax time is here, so get ready to make that bid! Your loan officer will schedule the showings directly with the seller agent or online through "Showing Time." Days and times are according to seller availability. Where the property is vacant, there is 24 hour access indeed. Covid19 : Agents are mindful of the health precautions regarding access to homes. Appointments are made, then approved by the seller listing agent. The listing agent must state in the private remarks any safety measures with regards to entering the property. This will include wearing masks and a limit of two people with their agent entering the property. Children must remain outside. Soft suggestion: Inquire with your agent if you can request a "pre~inspection of the home" immediately after viewing. Hey its been real! Be safe and stay focused! Bishop William Henderson Makes His Transition
Beloved Longtime Pastor of the Historic Michigan Street Baptist Church
B
ishop William Henderson, the beloved longtime pastor of the historic Michigan Street Baptist Church, an Underground Railroad Station, made his Transition on January 11. There will be a public viewing held Sunday January 17, from 7-9 p.m. at Alan R. Core Funeral Home , 1933 Kensington Ave. A private ceremony will be held Monday January 18. The 85-year-old spiritual icon began preaching in the streets at William and Bennett at a young age. He was then known as “Brother Billy.” He ultimately devoted his life to the Michigan Street Baptist Church and teaching about freedom and the role that the sanctuary played in helping former enslaved Africans escape to Canada through the Underground Railroad in the 1800's.
The family of Bishop Henderson released the following statement in the wake of his passing: " It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of beloved husband and father, Bishop William Henderson. He was a man dedicated to God who began his ministering career at the age of 15, which took him across the world from Africa to Russia. He battled myriad of health issues, but was resilient and pressed on with purpose and conviction." "Bishop leaves a tremendous legacy in the City of Buffalo. It was his mission and part of his calling to keep the Michigan Street Baptist Church standing. Having taken over the church in 1974, people would come from all over the globe to hear him tell stories about escaped enslaved Africans hiding in the church as part of the Underground Railroad as they made their way to Canada."
Bishop William Henderson "Bishop was a tireless man of God and an inspiration to our family and everyone he touched. He will be missed." He leaves behind his wife of forty years, Dianna Henderson; three children Dwand, Addison and Rachel; and four grandchildren.

WE'VE SEEN THAT MOB BEFORE
Reading Matters: "Where Do We Go From Here" and Other Books by Dr. King
•The Atlanta Massacre of 1906 was an attack by armed mobs of Whites against African Americans in Atlanta, Georgia which began the evening of September 22. Upwards of 100 Blacks were killed during the riots, some were hanged from lamposts; others were shot, beaten or stabbed to death. They were pulled from street cars and attacked on the street; White mobs invaded Black neighborhoods, destroying homes and businesses. An underlying cause was the growing racial tension in a rapidlychanging city and economy, with competition for jobs, housing, and political power. •The East St. Louis Riots were a series of outbreaks of labor- and race-related violence by Whites who murdered upwards of 250 African-Americans in late May and early July 1917. Another 6,000 Blacks were left homeless and the burning and vandalism cost approximately $400,000 ($7,982,000 in 2021) in property damage. The July 1917 episode in particular was marked by Whiteled violence throughout the city. At the end of July, some 10,000 Black citizens marched in silent protest in New York City in condemnation of the massacre. •The Ocoee Massacre was a White mob attack on African-American residents in northern Ocoee, Florida, (near Orlando) which occurred on November 2, 1920, the day of the U.S. presidential election. Most estimates total 30–35 Black people killed. Most African American-owned buildings and residences in northern Ocoee were burned to the ground. Other African Americans living in southern Ocoee were later killed or driven out on threat of more violence. Ocoee essentially became an all-White town. The attack started after efforts to suppress Black citizens from voting.
n the month of January, we pause to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others who were a part of the Civil Rights Movement. Unfortunately after we read the I Have a Dreamspeech from the March on Washington in 1963, we cease to study King and his philosophy. Dr. King in his book: Where Do We Go From Here spoke on racism: "If Western civilization does not now respond constructively to the challenge to banish racism, some future historian will have to say that a great civilization died because it lacked the soul and commitment to make justice a reality for all men." •Hellbound on His Trail by Hampton Sides •The King Years by Taylor Branch •Pillars of Fire by Taylor Branch •Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community by Martin Luther King -For Young Readers•I Am Martin Luther King by Brad Melzer •The Power of a Dream: Martin Luther King, Jr. •What Was Your Dream, Dr. King by Mary Carson

A Reflection on Dr. King's Militancy
I
By Dr. Cornell West
f King were alive today, his words would threaten most of those who now sing his praises Dr. Martin Luther King's last sermon was entitled Why America May Go to Hell. His personal loneliness and political isolation loomed large. J Edgar Hoover said he was “the most dangerous man in America”. President Johnson called him “a nigger preacher”. Fellow Christian ministers, white and black, closed their pulpits to him. Young revolutionaries dismissed and tried to humiliate him with walkouts, booing and heckling. Life magazine – echoing Time magazine, the New York Times, and the Washington Post (all bastions of the liberal establishment) – trashed King’s anti-war stance as “demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi”. And the leading Black journalist of the day, Carl Rowan, wrote in the Reader’s Digest that King’s “exaggerated appraisal of his own self-importance” and the communist influence on his thinking made King “persona non-grata to Lyndon Johnson” and “has alienated many of the Negro’s friends and armed the Negro’s foes”. One of the last and true friends of King, the great Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel prophetically said: “The whole future of America will depend upon the impact and influence of Dr. King.” When King was murdered something died in many of us. The bullets sucked some of the free and democratic spirit out of the US experiment. The next day over 100 American cities and towns were in flames – the fire this time had arrived again! Today, over 50 years later the US imperial meltdown deepens. And King’s radical legacy remains primarily among the awakening youth and militant citizens who choose to be extremists of love, justice, courage and freedom, even if our chances to win are that of a snowball in hell! This kind of unstoppable King-like extremism is a threat to every status quo! (From Martin Luther King Jr. Was a Radical" by Dr. West, The Guardian 2018)

A Perspective on America’s Imperfect Democracy
In view of so many imperfections manifested throughout its history, America looks less like the “shining city on a hill” than a shadowy ghetto of hypocrisy.
I
By Gary Grappo
t is a well-established fact that America, as it approaches its 245th birthday, is a divided nation. Red versus blue, conservative versus liberal, right versus left, Black versus White, rich versus (a growing number of) poor, urban versus rural. Further divisions may be drawn along education, religion, class, gender identity, ethnicity, language of origin and other descriptors. It was all on technicolor display on January 6, the day when both the US Senate and the Ho]use of Representatives were due to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election as required under the US Constitution. The world watched as Americans, so passionately aligned with President Donald Trump and so convinced that the election had been stolen from him, determined to disrupt, if not destroy, the most sacred core of the country’s democratic system, the Congress. It was a horrifying and tragic example of democracy run amuck. What took place on Capitol Hill that day was everything the framers of the Constitution and the Founding Fathers sought to prevent. In fact, the rioters’ actions by no definition can be remotely described as democratic. They were purposefully dangerous and, as facts come to light, intended to inflict violence. It was mob rule. Insurrection. Rebellion. Sedition. It represented the abandonment of democracy and descent into anarchy. -Compared To What? But before America’s critics, doubters, adversaries and enemies pronounce the country’s or its democracy’s last rites, they may wish to consult history. They may wish to reflect on the many other occasions when the world’s oldest democracy turned away from its constitution, its values, principles and its own laws. How does it compare with more than 250 years of legalized slavery that only a bloody, four-year civil war could end? Or to another 150 years of Jim Crow and segregation? Of course, there were also the more than 120 unspeakable incidents of mass violence committed against the country’s Black citizens, including the Slave Revolt in the Cherokee Nation of 1842, the New York Draft Riots of 1863, Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, Rosewood Massacre of 1923, Charlestown Church Massacre of 2015 and the Black Lives Matter demonstrations of last summer, on top of the 3,400-plus lynchings of Black Americans in the period after the Civil War until well into the civil rights era. And would January 6 look more uncivil and unconstitutional than the systematic theft of Native American lands in violation of all the treaties signed by them with the US government and often their forced removal from those lands? These date back to the nation’s independence and continue to this day. To add tragic irony to those two sets of gross injustice, consider that substantial numbers of Black and Native Americans fought valiantly to defend the very country and democracy that treated them as second-class citizens and often worse. At the start of World War II, the US government ordered Japanese Americans rounded up and confined in internment camps for the duration of the war. They committed no crime. They were given no trial. Yet despite the violation of their constitutional rights, 33,000 of the sons, husbands and brothers of those held in the internment camps volunteered to fight for the United States in the war, including 18,000 in the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a highly decorated all-JapaneseAmerican Army unit led by White officers. There is also the country’s long history of denial of rights to and prejudice against other ethnic and religious groups, including Irish, Germans, Italians, Jews, Catholics, Chinese, Vietnamese, Muslims, Hispanics and other people of color. They learned that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights did not always apply to them. Furthermore, when they may have belatedly come to be accepted, restitution has rarely been offered. How does all this compare with January 6, however despicable and detestable that event may have been? In view of these and so many other imperfections manifested throughout its history, America looks less like the “shining city on a hill” than a shadowy ghetto of hypocrisy. January 6 is just one more example and maybe not the most egregious. (However) almost lost amidst all the noise of these events, just one day before, voters in Georgia, the heartland of the old Confederacy, elected, for the first time, a Black man and a Jew to represent the state in the US Senate. Georgians showed up in record numbers at the polls or through mail-in ballots to express the “consent of the governed.” Voting officials and volunteers diligently managed the entire process without incident so that the voices of the people of Georgia would be heard and counted. The quiet courage of citizens attending to their democracy stifled the mob violence at the US Capitol. January 6 surely should be a day that no American or citizen of any democracy should ever forget. It is a starkly painful reminder of human weakness and the fragility of democracy. Clearly, Americans should consider speaking more humbly of their “model” democracy. Their country is living proof that even after nearly 250 years, their experiment is still very much a work in progress. (Excerpted from Fair Observer.)

"Where Do We Go From Here - Chaos or Community?" The Book, The Conversation, King's Final Lesson Access To A Free Ka is proud and honored to build on Communiversity 2021. For a year and a half, since WUFO’s Town Hall Meet the Candidates at the Northland Workforce Training Center, we decided it was necessary to educate our community about civics, community responsibility, and community engagement. The need to include the Black Community in all of its diversity was the main goal. Different generations have different accounts of the Black Experience in America. Different educational, economical, and social classes have given us different experiences as we challenge the same problems. Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most beloved Brothers in the world and his words and works carry a lot of weight. If he was to give us some RAS last words, a farewell address, a final lesson ……. What would it Be? If he was JOMO to take a “Time out” or go to the “Mountain Top” and soberly prepare this Final Testament, where would he go? What would he Teach? What would he state? What would he ask? I have a couple of answers for those who just asked that question. Rev. King went to Jamaica and wrote the book, “Where Do We Go From Here – Chaos or Community." This clear, easy listening voice to rally our collective experience speaks to us with a 20/20 vision and not just a dream. We are asking schools, churches, mosques, and community centers to get this book in the hands of your members. Masons, Fraternities, Sororities, and other organizations and institutions, please find a way to get this book to your members. The intergenerational knowledge and wisdom must be experienced now! 2021 needs our hearts, minds, money and votes to be on the same page. We must be in position to Save Ourselves if necessary. Join Access To A Free Ka every Sunday on WUFO 1080 AM, 96.5 FM, and www.power965radio.com from 7– 10 p.m. as we talk about this mission. However this is a special in-
vitation for you to join us Monday January 18, 2021 at 4pm for a special MLK Birth Anniversary broadcast where we will be giving away free books to our listeners.("Where Do We go From Here" is available at ZAWADI Books .See Page 11
