U.S. Congressman Brian Higgins Pays Tribute To Vietnam Veterans at Bennett-Wells American Legion Post

ore than 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam; 11 percent were African American servicemen. Most returned home from the war to a somewhat hostile political environment in the United States. The impact of the anti-War protests across the nation in the late 1960s and early 1970s fostered an anti-Vietnam veteran atmosphere that lasted for nearly 20 years after the war ended. Today, a nationwide campaign is being led by the Department of Defense and supported by VA as part of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration Program to officially recognized and thank them for their service. Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) recently honored over 50 veterans who served during the Vietnam War during a special Black History Month celebration presented by the Bennett-Wells American Legion Post and Auxiliary #1780. Higgins said, “Fifty years ago, this Country failed to properly welcome our Vietnam Veterans home. And therefore, it is especially significant to be here, at the Bennett-Wells American Legion Post, a place that represents great history and leadership in recognizing and welcoming all service members.  While we can’t undo the unjustified reception veterans received years ago, we can work today and each day forward to appropriately express the sincere appreciation these veterans deserve for their commitment and selfless service to this country.” Congressman Higgins also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of University District Councilmember Rasheed N.C. Wyatt who joined him for the presentation. “We thank Congressman Higgins for paying a special visit to recognize our veterans and advocate at the congressional level for their unique needs. I also thank the Bennett-Wells American Legion Post and Auxiliary #1780 for its warm hospitality and ongoing support of those who defend our freedom. We owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans and their families.” After World War II, over 100 African Americans retuning to Buffalo were not welcome to join existing American Legion posts.  Those veterans worked together to form the BennettWells American Legion Post, established in 1946 and chartered in 1954.  The Post is named in honor of the first two African American soldiers killed in WWII, Private James Bennett and Lieutenant Johnson Wells.  The America Vietnam War Commemoration was authorized by Congress and pledges to honor United States veterans who served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces at between November 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of location. The commemoration is taking place nationwide, with the presentation of Vietnam War Commemoration pins presented between Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025. Congressman Higgins’s office is a registered commemorative partner, committed to honoring Vietnam Veterans over the designated Anniversary period.  Renata Toney is a Challenger News contributing writer SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS!

former NFL player declared President Trump the “first black president” Thursday during a Black History Month round table discussion at the White House. “Mr. President, I don’t mean to interrupt, but I’ve got to say this because it’s Black History Month: man, you are the first black president,” Former NFL safety Jack Brewer, who was a guest at the roundtable, told Trump. The comment sparked a round of applause from the president’s other supporters who were in attendance, which included Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece Alveda King, conservative media personalities Diamond and Silk and others. Brewer said he was a Democrat all his life until he was “changed” and “inspired” by President Trump. “You’ve changed me. You touched me. And you made my work go to another

Congress Moves to Make Lynching a Federal Crime After 120 Years of Failure Since at least 1900, members of the House and Senate have tried to pass a law making lynching a federal crime. The bills were consistently blocked, shelved or ignored, and the passage of time has rendered anti-lynching legislation increasingly symbolic. But last Wednesday, a measure to add lynching to the United States Criminal Code passed in the House. The Senate passed a version of the bill last year. Once the bills are formally reconciled, the legislation can be sent to the Oval Office, where the president is expected to sign it into law. The House bill, called the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, was introduced by Representative Bobby Rush, a Democrat from Illinois. The Senate bill, which passed unanimously last year, was introduced by Kamala Harris, Democrat of California; Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey; and Tim Scott, Republican of South Carolina.

Ruth L. Kennedy:

Proprietor of Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap Pairs Purpose with Her Passion for Secondhand Fashion

B

orn and raised in the City of Buffalo, Ruth Kennedy, known for her standout style and a strong entrepreneurial head for business, has always been focused on community growth. She is currently owner and operator of Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap, one of Buffalo’s best thrift stores on the East side, a gem for secondhand shopping and even new and popular items. It is a special thrift boutique that provides premium forward fashion, by way of top notch secondhand items that have their rightful place in every woman’s wardrobe. "I’ve always thought about a system of building community wealth and to have more leisure that everyone can afford…everyone deserves nice things,” said Ms. Kennedy. Located at 974 Jefferson Avenue Miss Betty’s occupies the first level of a house with a green facade and a picture store front window that faces the street. The main door opens to a lovely parlor filled with merchandise and connecting rooms that trail to the rear of the store with an endless variety of items to choose from. Kennedy gets her inventory by way of donations from her long time community supporters carrying items that cater to women of all ages. No matter if you are interested in today’s fashions or if you are a professional who prefers name brands and even elder retired woman looking for quality, Miss Betty’s has something for you and you won’t have to stretch your budget beyond its limit to shop! “My inventory consists of 70% slightly used, 30% new and plenty of options for all. I’m so grateful for the support I get from the community. Their donations allow me to transfer the savings to the customer so their dollars can buy them more and they can also save," she explained. The attractive store layout was created by former Gallerist and Art Dealer

Paula Coleman who creatively mapped out a more appealing shopping environment. Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap experience is well worth the visit. From twopiece ensembles, dresses, coats, hats, accessories, jewelry and shoes, the store offers a comfortable and tasteful shopping experience. “Paula’s creative assistance has been invaluable,” said Kennedy. “ I honestly could not have accomplished this without her.” Ruth Kennedy makes her price points with a purpose for good reason. “ It’s the coming thing” she said, “with the way the economy is going, we are going to have to find ways to give the community better options for items they need, and make our dollars go farther. That’s part of my goal.” -Looking back In the 60s as a young woman Ruth and her longtime friend Betty Fowler operated a store on William Street called FEMINA 3 BAZZAR where they sold things like food, clothing, furniture, and rented space to other vendors offering a variety of items for a full shopping experience. “It was like the first ‘mall’ in the community where people could stop at different vendors to get whatever they needed” recalled Ruth. Professionally Ruth owned and operated RLK Accounting and Income Tax Service in the Cold Spring area of Jefferson Avenue providing over 40 years of outstanding service. Remaining fully vested in the community, she retired the Tax business

in 1996 and along with her late husband Robert Kennedy, who also operated Bob’s Barbershop on Jefferson Avenue for over 40 years until his death in 2002, invested in commercial and rental properties in the community for roughly 14 years. “I’ve always conducted my business on the East Side of Buffalo” said Ruth. “ This community has always supported all the business’ that my husband and I operated. Giving back to the community also means keeping business in the community. That's what I will continue to do so as well a support other bussiness as well.” -Continuing the LegacyAfter a successful 7 years operating the business under the name “Dirt Cheap” where she sold furniture and fixtures, the business moved to its current and now permanent location on Jefferson Avenue in 2017. In 2018 she and longtime friend Betty Fowler reunited in business and formed a partnership where Ruth added Fowler to “Dirt Cheap” officially changing the name to “Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap.” Fowler, who brought the fashion apparel savvy to the business died suddenly that same year so Ruth formed a sole proprietorship as “Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap,” keeping the name in tribute to her dearest friend as she continued to move forward at her new location . “We became sister-friends, I felt honored to know and have her in my life so I decided to keep the name as we had changed it” said Ruth “Like Betty always said, ‘If you’re going somewhere take someone with you.’ -Future VisionWith a new year ahead Ruth keeps her spirited, positive outlook on what is possible in the world of shopping secondhand and she’s on a serious mission to keep this good thing going towards expansion outside of its own walls. “ I want to franchise” she said with a powerful urgency in her voice. “ With the downward spiral of today’s

economy I strongly believe that thrift stores could have a lucrative future.” From the looks of it, Ruth Kennedy has firmly seeded the mission of this business that was built for timeless success. Look for Miss Betty’s Dirt Cheap upcoming 2020 sales, giveaways and community events in the Challenger and online. SLOW DOWN!

Lights, Cameras , Money! School Zone Speed Limit Update

W

By Staff Writer

hen community activist Tina Sanders was driving down Genesee near Foreman one day last month she was pulled over by the police for speeding in a school zone. The former candidate for The Fillmore District Council seat was shocked. She didn’t see any 15 mph speed zone signs and she didn’t see any school. Just a police car stationed in the heart of the community giving out tickets. She was advised that the Mosque located in that area housed a school but she had no knowledge of that prior to being stopped. Then she was handed a ticket for $450! “I went downtown to the Parking Violation Bureau Room 115 . They handed me a paper to take home in order to take a driving course on line. That cost me $37. I was also told if I pleaded not guilty, I could be fined double the amount of the ticket but if I took the plea it would just be the $450 and no points on my license. Going before a prosecutor she advised could also result in having six points on my license and possibly 15 days in jail.” About a week after taking the on-line course she received a certificate in the mail and took it back downtown. “That’s when I was told I had 30 days to pay the ticket. So what good was taking and passing the online driving course? I was upset until I found out the woman standing next to ne had a ticket for $750.” Tina recalled the long lines at the bureau that day. Everybody’s amount was different. “I thought to myself, ‘this is sad this is wrong. This new speed law was poorly executed and put into place by elected officials without considering the people they serve.“ “I understand the importance of safety for our kids,” she continued. “We all want that…but they’re making money off the backs of people who can’t afford it.” For the Children or For the Money? Many people had no idea what was going on until they received a “warning letter” of a potential pending fine from Speed Monitoring Violations, complete with a photo of their car rolling down the street. Despite lawmakers insistence that the school zone speed cameras do not represent a money grab for the city, money has taken precedence over the safety issue because of the way the initiative has been implemented and the lack of transparency. Consider a published report in the Feb. 4 Buffalo News which cited “city officials” who indicated that on any given day during the warning period the cameras captured more than 10,000 images of drivers speeding and had they been issuing fines over the course of the warning period it would have generated $8 million in revenue. The vendors of the cameras didn’t charge the city for installation, but will collect $14 of every $50 ticket. Here is what we have learned: •14 of the 20 school zone speed cameras purchased by the city have been installed in these locations so far. *1087 Jefferson Ave. near Makowski School *1132 Jefferson Ave. near Makowski *1177 Delaware Ave. near Canisius High *1236 Delaware Ave. near Canisius *3125 Bailey Ave. near Westminster Charter

11 VOICES Protect The children Yes! But Don't Send Us All to the Poor House ! Dear Editor: Regulating the speed in our school zones is good for the safety of our children. HOWEVER, tell your young mother, running late for her $400/wk before taxes job, dropping off the child who missed the bus, or the lunch that was left on the table, that she has to pay $380 of that $400. THE FEES ARE TOO HIGH - period!! I know you guys said it was not a money grab, but when you take $380 from someone who is only making $400, and jeopardize their license and add fees and require you to take classes, time off from work, etc., etc., if that is not a money grab - what is it!?! $100 fee is bad, but it wouldn't kill the head of the household the kid this law is trying to protect, lives in. What was the urgency that it had to be put in place immediately, without enough thought about the collateral damage being taken into consideration. THE FEES ARE TOO HIGH - period!! I am ashamed that we can vote to give rich developers (who probably don't even live in the city) huge tax breaks. That money could be used to expand our subway to go down more than one street or fill some of these axle breaking potholes all over the place! To try to make up that missing money and close our deficit on the backs of public school parents, hard working citizens and out of town visitors is simply not fair! Mayor Brown, Council President and Common Council members who went along with this shenanigans - THE FEES ARE TOO HIGH - period! Lower them please! -Karla Thomas

If there are no flashing lights the cameras are not active. University Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt admits that the flashing lights should have been rolled out initially, making it easier for people to be aware and respectful of the initiative. •Speed Camera Violations cannot be issued for speeds under 26 mph. Anything over 26 mph is subject to a $50 fine. •However Police Officers can issue violations in school zones for speeds 16 mph and above, treat them as moving violations, points will go on your license and your insurance will go up. The fines ae also extremely high i.e. $350/$450. (Why are the police officers posted in some areas where their fines are way higher than the cameras, when this is supposed to be a speed zone camera initiative? We have been advised that once all the cameras have flashing lights working that should eliminate police officer violations. Citizens should demand that it does.) Council Member Wyatt is currently trying to get a resolution passed to change the enforcement times and make them consistent across the city so that drivers are only subject to speeding tickets between 7a.m. and 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. instead of the current 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. He has also suggested possibly increasing the speed limit to 20 mph. and believes the city needs to be “more uniform” in terms of where the signs are placed. -Public Trust“We’ve got to get the public trust now,” Council Member Wyatt told The Challenger. “ We’ve got to make it fair for the people we were elected to serve. I want them to trust that we

Rise Up Right Highlights in Sports

LEGAL NOTICE Bank of America

By Andre Robinson

Welcome to Rise Up Right, where we give you the best sports news and highlights, and updates taking full circle in the sports world. Thank you for your continued support....and with that being said Let's Rise Up.... XFL Scores Battlehawks 23 Dragons 16 Guardians 17 Wildcats 14 Roughnecks 27 Renegades 20 Buffalo Bulls Basketball The UB Bulls will be looking to finish out the regular season on a positive note as this past week saw The Bulls lose to Ohio 80-69 on last Tuesday and to Akron this past Saturday 86-73. The Bulls will play Miami Ohio and Bowling Green to end the regular season. The Bulls could accomplish another 20 win season with two victories before they get ready for the MAC Tournament. Jayvon Graves will look to continue to be the Bulls best player if they want to be successful in March. March Madness is on the way. Buffalo Sabres Hockey Just when it looks like the Sabres were making a run towards turning the season around they have lost 3 straight games this past week. The Sabres this past week acquired Wayne Simmonds, who is a very good veteran that played for the Flyers and Predators. Simmonds for career averages a half a point per game with 499 points in 905 games played. The Sabres current record is 29-28-6. NFL Combine The NFL combine has been quite an interesting spectacle to watch this offseason as the wide receiver class is stacked to the max with talent. The Buffalo Bills who need a big body wide receiver should keep their eyes on Justin Jefferson or Chase Claypool who is a 6'4" 238 pound wide receiver that ran a 4.42 in the 40 yard dash. There's only one other player in the history of the NFL that was 6'4" 230 lb and ran a 4.45. His name was Calvin Johnson aka "Megatron. Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane may catch a blessing as this talent could fall to them with the 22nd pick. Many believe the Buffalo Bills should have grabbed DK Metcalf good last year's draft who had a breakout season with the Seattle Seahawks this past season. The excitement will continue as Pro Days are quickly approaching the football world. Get Ready. Many teams will be making decisions on what they want from the draft as we are two weeks away from free agency period. Making History with Aja Smith The WWE this week has been making history in more ways than one. Aja Smith was signed by the WWE this week making her the first African-American full-time referee in the history of the WWE. She will be refereeing matches on one of the hottest WWE brands in NXT. Aja Smith who went by the name of Aja Perera, has competed all over the US, Japan and Mexico. Aja Smith has held tag team championships along with the SHINE Nova championship during her wrestling journey. As a huge fan of NXT, I will definitely be watching NXT even more in support of Aja Smith, the 1st African American referee in WWE. Congratulations, the wrestling world can't wait to see you on Wednesday nights.

Plaintiff Designates Erie County as the Place of Trial. The Basis of Venue is that the subject action is situated in Erie County. To the above named Defendants–YOU ARE HEREBY SUMMONED to answer the Complaint in this action and to serve a copy of your answer, or, if the complaint is not served with this Summons, to serve a notice of appearance, on the Plaintiff’s Attorney(s) within 20 days after the service of this Summons, exclusive of the day of service (or within 30 days after the service is complete if this Summons is not personally delivered to you within the State of New York); the United States of America may appear or answer within 60 days of service hereof; and in case of your failure to appear or answer, judgment will be taken against you by default for the relief demanded in the Complaint. That this Supplemental Summons is being filed pursuant to an order of the court dated February 10, 2020. NOTICE-YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME – If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to the mortgage company will not stop the foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE; New York State law requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this Foreclosure Action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney of your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services’ at 1-800-269-0990 or visit the Department’s website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. We are attempting to collect a debt. Any information obtained will be used for that purpose. The foregoing summons is served upon you by publication pursuant to an order of the Honorable Joseph R. Glownia, AJSC dated February 10, 2020.
