Roswell Wants To Clear The AIR on Lung Cancer Risks
T
PART I
ake a deep breath. Think about your lungs for a moment and all they do to keep you healthy. Do you understand your risk level for lung cancer and the things you can do to reduce your risk? Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is launching a new community-based lung cancer education and screening program to help our neighbors understand the risk factors associated with lung cancer, along with steps you can take to prevent it. The incidence of lung cancer is higher in Western New York than in the rest of the state and across the United States. In our eight-county region, it causes 50 deaths per 100,000, compared with the New York State rate of 37.1 deaths per 100,000 and the U.S. rate of 41.9 deaths per 100,000. Incidence from lung cancer are higher among African Americans in Western New York than for any other racial group, with more than 85 people out of every 100,000 developing the disease. The Roswell Awareness, Information and Resources for Lung Cancer Screening, or AIR, program features both socially distanced in-person and virtual meetings to help people understand that lung cancer isn’t just associated with smoking. These meetings will be offered in both English and Spanish to better serve our neighbors. The premise is simple, says Nikia Clark, a Community Continued Page 4
This game was everything I thought it would be and more. It showed the Bills flaws as well as the improvements made in 2020. Josh Allen showed poise in the final drive to lead them to a 30 – 26 advantage. Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs has made Josh Allen a much better QB with precise route running which forces Allen to be more accurate with the football. Josh is a work in progress, who must calm down with the pressure on and continue to not turn the football over. DeAndre Hopkins showed everyone why he is the best wide receiver in the game today. He has the biggest hands I’ve ever seen on a receiver and he’s such a clutch player, who continues to show how stupid Bill O’Brien was for trading him. Hopkins catch will probably be the catch of the year while his trade from Houston to Arizona will be the worst in NFL history. Cardinals all pro defensive back Patrick Peters had one interception but really should have had three on some very poorly thrown passes by Josh Allen. The Bills need a consistent running game in order to help Allen out and once again Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll went away from the run as Zack Moss seemed to be just getting warmed up finishing with 7 rushes for 20 yards. That’s terrible play calling especially with two more defensive linemen injured who did not return to the game for the Arizona Cardinals. They were already missing their best defensive linemen Chandler Jones and Jordan Phillips. Daboll should have run a no huddle offense with a combination of runs and passes to tire out the Cardinals defensive front. That was another Coaching error by Daboll, who seems to have trouble with calling positive plays in the third quarter. (Read the full Bills sports update on our website thechallengernews.com/

With the recent increase and severity of natural disasters, and the devastation from the Covid-19 pandemic, we have learned that we always need more preparation. This virtual training will equip Block Clubs & Organizations with guidelines for Disaster Preparedness for their members, residents, and neighbors. We are urging all community organizations to look out for our seniors and our most vulnerable members to help prepare for severe conditions that are very likely to get worse. Past events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005, have shown us that it is usually the most vulnerable, and the poor who are caught unaware and unprepared. Our aim is to organize block by block, and organization by organization, all within a “Good Neighbor Network,” to help our members store food and water, and necessary supplies, in the event that we may have to shelter in place for longer than we may have expected. State and local governments have been told by the federal government, that they are on their own to plan, organize, and mobilize to prepare themselves; especially with regard to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Along with this Disaster Preparedness Neighborhood Training series there are numerous services and resources available for residents at www.caowny.org and www. buffalony.gov where users can also find additional disaster preparedness tips and guidelines. Participants can log in to the Disaster Preparedness Training on 11/20/20 at 12p.m. by clicking the link: https://atteetrial1.webex.com/meet/citizenservices

Ahosi
The Dahomey Amazons or Mino was an all-female military regiment of the Fon people of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the presentday West African country of Benin. They existed from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. While European narratives refer to the women soldiers as “Amazons,” because of their similarity to the semi-mythical Amazons of ancient Anatolia, they called themselves Ahosi (king’s wives) or Mino (our mothers) in the Fon language. The Ahosi were extremely well trained, and inculcated with a very aggressive attitude. They were ferocious fighters with a reputation for decapitating soldiers in the middle of battle, as well as those who were unfortunate to become their captives. Seh-Dong-Hong-Beh was one of the great leaders of the Mino. In 1851 she led an army of 6,000 women against the Egba fortress of Abeokuta. Because the Mino were armed with spears, bows and swords while the Egba had European cannons, only about 1,200 survived the extended battle. European encroachment into West Africa gained pace Continued Page 9

Masks Also Protect the Wearer, CDC Announces Wearing a mask protects you, not only those around you, the CDC said in a significant update to its guidance on face coverings. The United States reported 135,428 new coronavirus cases last Tuesday, shattering records for the third time in the past week.
ROSWELL continued from page 2 Relations Coordinator at Roswell Park. “People come and learn what lung cancer is and how to lower their risk,” she says. “We give them information about what causes lung cancer, how to prevent it; we navigate them to resources and help them get signed up for screening. If they are current users of either tobacco or e-cigarettes or vaping products, we can navigate them to smoking cessation programs offered by the NYS Smokers Quitline. We work in partnership with that office and people can get free one-onone counseling, either virtually or over the phone, and they can get free gum and patches to help them stop smoking.” Next: Conclusion Part 2
In the wake of the rise of positive COVID-19 cases, a national effort has been launched by the Nation of Islam to distribute free books on home cleaning and sanitizing as well as free masks. The effort is a gift from the Nation of Islam and the Hon. Baskin and Johnson Ensure Our Community’s Veterans Are Not Forgotten Erie County Legislators April N. M. Baskin and Howard Johnson ensured that local veterans received the honor they are due this year. Baskin, the Jesse Clipper American Legion Post and the African American Cultural Center hosted a free Veteran’s Day Drive-Up Breakfast at the Northland Workforce Training Center, and Johnson worked with community veterans, Boy Scouts and Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski to mark the graves of veterans at Concordia Cemetery. “As we thank all soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen for their selfless service to America, I want to highlight our nation’s Black and Brown veterans,” said Baskin. “These brave souls have served and sacrificed on our behalf, even as their contributions were often minimized and denigrated. I want to highlight the contributions of Kanasha Blue to the breakfast. I had the honor of submitting the legislative resolution appointing Kanasha as the very first Black Female Veteran to serve Kanasha Blue on the Buffalo & Erie County Naval Park Board of Directors earlies this year. Thank you all." “As a veteran, I was an honored to be part of the ceremony at Concordia Cemetery,” noted Legislator Johnson. “I want to thank AmVets Post #24, and the Boy Scouts for inviting me. It was truly humbling to see the many flags covering our historic cemetery.”

The Body Speaks the Mind
Symptoms are not enemies to be destroyed, but sacred messengers who encourage us to take better care of ourselves”
W
hen we experience illness, aches, or pains, our first instinct is to find a way to get rid of it. We grab the Tylenol, Motrin, or whatever else we can to relieve our pain and discomfort as soon as possible. As a Holistic Practitioner, I understand the connection and continuity between the body, m i n d , spirit, and emotions. Dis-ease or imbalance in one area of our lives will manifest as dis-ease and imbalance in other areas of our lives. It is not uncommon for the dis-ease we experience in our spirit and emotions to manifest as physical dis-ease. Louise Hay, author of the Book, Heal Your Body explains, “The mental thought patterns that cause the most dis-ease in the body are criticism, anger, resentment, and guilt.”
When we do not or even feel we cannot address certain issues in our lives, our bodies will speak for us. The body will speak the mind. The body will speak as headaches, body aches, toothaches, neck pain, back pain or any other physical ailment or illness. The pain or discomfort manifests to get our attention. It’s as if the body is telling you, “Hey. You have been ignoring us. There are some things going on that need to be addressed and this is the only way to get your attention.” Many of us do not stop, rest, or go within until there is a health crisis. Then and only then do we take a moment to see what is going on. Karol Truman has said, “the symptoms in our body are carriers of information, of a message about the state of our soul.” When we stop to see what the body is saying we may come to the realization that not only do we need to make changes to our diet and exercise, but we also need to address the issues that cause
us emotional and mental discomfort. Health is more than what we eat, it is also about what eats us. This can be a very painful experience as many of us carry heavy burdens from our past and even the transgenerational trauma of our family. Western modern medicine will treat an illness or disease purely from a physical perspective and treat the symptom. African Holistic Health will treat an illness or disease from a physical, mental, and spiritual perspective, looking at all angles to address the root issue. The next time an ache, pain, dis-ease, or illness manifests in your life, stop to see what the mind or spirit is saying through the body. Because the body speaks the mind. Scripture to Prepare Your Heart for Thanksgiving The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Until the heart is surrendered to the Savior, offering up praise and thanks will be difficult. But when the heart fully and completely trusts in the Lord, it’s well conditioned to lift and magnify God. This is when the heart sings, the mind is free, and life feels better. When we trust the Lord in all things, we recognize Him helping us through all things.

he Gamma Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is honored to present the 39th biennial Culminating Extravaganza; Emeralds of Excellence Leadership Development Program. wenty-five years ago Lillion Batchelor founded the Buffalo Quarters Historical Society. The purpose was to increase local, national and international awareness of the significant role Buffalo played in the Underground Railroad movement. The Society, under her leadership, presented annual historical events through drama and music culminating in a moving re-enactment called “the annual runaway slave crossing.” The point of that emotional dramatization took place at the foot of West Ferry in Broderick Park; the last stop on the Underground Railroad where thousands of enslaved Africans who had escaped inhumane conditions in bondage, crossed the Niagara River into Canada in search of a better life. The efforts of Mrs. Batchelor and the Buffalo Quarters Historical Society and many others thru the years, have not been in vain. Today Broderick Park is a jewel in the City of Buffalo’s park system steeped in international, national, and local history, including, most significantly, its association with the Underground Railroad. The park is designated a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Site and has undergone an $11 Million makeover (2013) under the leadership of Mayor Byron Brown, which included an enhanced concession area, an amphitheater and performance plaza, a new family gathering area and shelter, a great lawn and large event space, a contemplative garden, and a ‘Freedom Walk’ with historical paving stones incorporated throughout the site. The Friends of Broderick Park, a group that was re-energized this year and is under the leadership of George Johnson of the Buffalo United Front, has taken a leading role in caring for the park. Their mission is to secure its recognition as a historic landmark and destination of the Underground Railroad; to enhance use of the park for recreational, cultural and educations activities; and to ensure the park’s longevity through stewardship and necessary improvements. “This park is sacred ground,” stated Johnson. “We want to bring awareness of its significance to the community and make Broderick Park a destination goal!” The first task of the group this year was the beautification of the gardens which had not been given the much needed attention they deserved. They started with the Lillion Batchelor Contempltive Garden, named in honor of Mrs. Batchelor’s trailblazing dedication to celebrating the parks history. Throughout the summer The Friends held volunteer events every Saturday morning where they continued to care for the other gardens, pick up liter, and engage with visitors. The Friends have lots of plans for the future including cultural and educational programing events and festivals all depending on when large group events are possible again. However the immediate task at hand for The Friends is an ambitious public art initiative in partnership with the City of Buffalo Arts Council. They are looking to add beauty to Broderick Park through art that reflects the importance of the site with regards to the Underground Railroad and also the Black History of Buffalo. And they are seeking input from the community by way of a survey that can be found online and in this issue. News of the art initiative was well received by Mrs. Batchelor, as she had also envisioned historically relevant art in the park (specifically murals and sculptures). She even wrote of promoting “positive race relations through sharing of the arts “ when she started out over two decades ago. At 86 years young she expressed gratitude for having “Friends” to keep the park and “all this wonderful history alive…” Please complete the survey! It can be found on this page and online at https://bnwaterkeeper.org/projects/broderick-park/, on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/friendsofbroderickpark The paper survey can be filled out and mailed, dropped off , or placed in the drop box at The Challenger Community News, 1337 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14208. Follow Friends of Broderick Park on Facebook and anyone who wants to get involved with the group or has any questions can contact Chris at cmurawski@bnwaterkeeper.org.

How did 12% of Black men vote for Trump?’
Dear Editor, Last week’s cover captured impressively what Biden acknowledged -- Black folks solidly "had his back" for his victory. Fingers crossed that our Community leverages that demonstrated power to garner elected officials actions to address critical issues (i.e. guns violence) that continuously sledge hammer our quality of life. -Katherine Massey
By Stacy M. Brown
J
uan Williams posited that he’s a Black man born in a Latin country and grew up in a Spanish-speaking family. The author and Fox News political analyst then stated a headscratching fact that many still find difficult to rationalize.“It stuns me to see that President Trump set a record last week by attracting the highest percentage of the non-white vote of any Republican presidential candidate in the last 60 years,” Williams wrote in an editorial for The Hill. Perhaps most stunning, lamented Williams, “How did 12 percent of Black men vote for Trump?” Although an overwhelming majority of Black men, 80%, voted for President-elect Joe Biden, support for the Democratic presidential ticket reached a new low among Black men in 2020, according to the NBC News poll of early and Election Day voters. In the same poll, 8% of Black male voters were reported to have cast their ballots for alternative candidates. In Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, of all Blacks casting ballots, 95 percent of Black men and 96 percent of Black women chose him, NBC News reported. Four years later, Black women’s support remained at 96 percent for Obama’s 2012 re-election. However, the black male vote decreased to 87 percent. In 2016, when the nominee was Hillary Clinton, Black men dropped even further to 82 percent, while Black women’s support for Clinton remained high at 94 percent. Biden came close to matching that this year, garnering the support of 91 percent of Black women. “It’s a trust issue. I view the Black community’s relationship with the Democratic Party, for example, as sort of like a domestic violence relationship,” Demetre Coles, a 25-year-old African American who lives in Waterbury, Conn., told NPR. Coles told the outlet he voted for Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins because Coles couldn’t connect with Democrats or Republicans. “We’ve been giving our vote to them loyally for 55, 60 years, and we have got nothing in return,” Coles remarked. And as for the Republican Party, I don’t feel as if they care about me at all. It’s just more blatant.” While Coles expressed a reason for casting his ballot for an alternative candidate who had virtually no chance to win, his declaration didn’t explain why so many other Black men voted for Trump. “Black men are hurting. Political parties mostly forget them, and then there’s this anger —whether it’s right or misguided— towards Biden for the 1994 Crime Bill,” said Unique Tolliver, a New York-based mathematician. The 1994 Crime Bill, which was authored by then-Senator Biden, and signed by President Bill Clinton, was crafted to address rising crime in the United States. The law contained numerous crime prevention provisions, including the controversial “three strikes” mandatory life sentences for repeat violent offenders. The law, which also called for funding community policing and prisons, disproportionately punished African American men, and most observers said it caused mass incarceration. “But, what Black people [today] fail to understand is that, at the time, there were all of these Black people, including the clergy, who supported the bill,” said Lenora Turner, a California-based psychologist. “So, with Black men still smarting over that bill and holding

it against Biden, and Trump repeatedly spreading the falsehood of how much he’s done for the Black community, you had quite the storm brewing among Black male voters,” Turner offered. “You also had respected strong Black men like Ice Cube— even though he said he didn’t endorse Trump—swaying Black men. I know that makes it sound like Black men don’t have a mind of their own, but think about what Ice Cube came out and said. He said the Democrats told him we’d talk later while Trump ‘listened’ and agreed to institute some of Cube’s initiatives in the President’s overall plan.” Still, as Juan Williams noted in his editorial, Trump’s racism toward Blacks and Latinos is so well-established. “It’s sad to say, but a lot of Black and Latino voters, especially the men, got distracted by Trump’s boasts and bling,” said Williams. Half of all Americans in a June 2020 YouGov/Yahoo News poll said outright that he is a racist, and another 13% could only say they are “not sure” whether he is a racist or not. A Quinnipiac University poll in July 2019, found that 80% of Black people and 55% of Latinos said Trump is a racist. A Fox News poll in July 2019 found 57% of Americans agreed that Trump has no respect for racial minorities.
Thanksgiving Is a Day of Mourning for Many Native Americans....
I
t’s important to know that for many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning and protest since it commemorates the arrival of settlers in North America and the centuries of oppression and genocide that followed after. For the last 48 years, the United American Indians of New England have organized a rally and day of mourning on November 22nd. Here’s what they have to say about this choice to mourn on Thanksgiving: “Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.” -From Natiave Hope, Voice of Indian Country
THE BUFFALO 5 “JOHN FLYNN: DO THE RIGHT THING” RALLY The We Are Women Warriors Organization, The Red Black And Green Show, and The Buffalo 5 are co-sponsoring an “Erie County District Attorney John Flynn: Do The Right Thing” Rally, in support of The Buffalo 5. The rally will be held in downtown Buffalo in front of the State Supreme Court Building at 25 Delaware Avenue, on Friday, November 20th at 12 noon. The rally will last one hour. Two of thesurviving three members of The Buffalo 5 will be in attendance. The Buffalo 5 are: John Walker,Jr., Darryl Boyd, Floyd Martin Darren Gibson (deceased), and Tyrone Woodruff. Falsely accused, wrongly arrested, indicted, tried, and convicted back in 1976 and '77 while they were teenagers- three members of The Buffalo 5 (collectively) spent over 84 years in prison for a crime they still insist they did not commit. They allege that exculpatory material evidence that might-
have proven their innocence was withheld by the Buffalo Police Department, and was completely ignored by the Erie County District Attorney's Office at time of their 1977 trials. Now, the Buffalo 5 are seeking to have their indictment (#41-413) vacated, and a complete exoneration. The attorney for The Buffalo 5, Mr. Paul Cambria, has prepared and submitted a new Motion To Vacate Indictment Number 41-413, and it is in front of a State Supreme Court Judge, as you read this. Join us at the rally on Friday to impress upon District Attorney John Flynn the importance of his supporting the new Motion. Also, supporters of the Buffalo 5 are asking the community to telephone John Flynn at: (716) 858-2424 to ask for his support of the new Motion To Vacate Erie County Indictment Number 41-413. We are in this together!

FULL MOON WATCH
November 30: Full Moon is a Lunar Eclipse The spiritual meaning of the full moon November 30, 2020 relates to change and uncertainty in love relationships and The full moon in Gemini delivers the goods in terms of versatility. That’s because this lunation is ruled by none other than Mercury—the messenger .... This full Moon is all about action and change. Will you choose remaining stagnant in the cycles of your past or will you be consciously moving forward by enriching your spiritual blessings? As we move in step with the coming end of our calendar year, we choose enrichment of spiritual blessings or remain stagnant in our past. Suddenly life is moving at an accelerated rate and be prepared to keep up with it during this full Moon until the next full Moon in December. Be flexible and not so rigid with your thoughts or actions. This full Moon is about leaving behind the noose of old habits, patterns and broken dreams. Here is an appropriate quotation from President John Kennedy. “For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” Think on this quotation. What has been cannot be changed and it is time to let it go, while we lean forward to embrace all that lies ahead. -Cherokee Billie

Holiday Pop Up Events to Promote Businesses Kicks Off on Black Lives Matter Way Local businesses, Leslie’s Boutique and Anderson’s Flower Shop began hosting weekly Holiday Pop Up Events last Friday to promote businesses on Fillmore Ave. (Black Lives Matter Way) . The owner of Leslie’s Boutique, Leslie Thomas, is a graduate of the Community Action Organization of WNY’s (CAO) Business Development Workshop Series. Thomas opened her store in 2017 at 1474 Fillmore Ave. She leases the space next door at 1476 Fillmore to Darren Anderson, owner of Andersons’s Flower Shop. “Our Business Development Workshop series has helped so many individuals gain confidence to achieve entrepreneurship,” President and CEO L. Nathan Hare said. “The facade improvements and business activity is incredible because it is transforming Fillmore Avenue. These individuals are reaching goals they never thought were possible, and are able to work for themselves, hire family members and put business back into the community they live in.” This year's 2020’s Business Development Workshop Series students will graduate December 14. Learn more at https://caowny.org/business-development/. The CAO’s Business Development Director is Pamela James.
