ayor Lovely A. Warren was joined recently by City Council President Loretta Scott and Rochester Area Community Foundation CEO Jennifer Leonard to cut a ribbon celebrating the grand opening of the “R-Training Center,” a new training facility adjacent to the Rochester Community Sports Complex stadium at 460 Oak St. “This project represents a win for equity,” said Mayor Warren. “For far too long, the youth of our city lacked the opportunities, access and facilities to train for, and get better at sports, as compared to their suburban counterparts. Today, we begin transforming the quality of life and the future of our young people for the better.” The R-Training Center is the first indoor training center of its kind within Rochester city limits serving Rochester’s student athletes. The project included the creation of a modern, indoor sports training facility that can facilitate both turf and court sports.

road games at Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans on Sunday Night Football and Monday night football respectively. The next two weeks will tell a lot about how much the Bills have improved over last season. I like the move of benching Cordy Ford for Spencer Brown moving to tackle position and Daryl Williams to Guard spot. This gives Bills a bigger offensive line suited especially for the running game. Their pass protection will improve once given the live game reps needed for them to become a cohesive unit. Devin Singletary had 14 carries for 79 yards and would have more if not benched for fumbling the ball twice. That’s one thing Head Coach Sean McDermott won’t stand for is fumbling the ball or dropped passes will not be tolerated. The Bills schedule is in their favor this season with several games against weaker opponents including the Jets (2), Jaguars, Falcons, and Dolphins. Yeah, I know, Patriots are looking weaker and weaker. What could Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick been thinking by going with rookie QB Mac Jones over Cam Newton? Cam would have given his offense and team a better chance to win. I think Belichick outcoached himself by thinking he could win consistently with Jones over Newton. The Bills defense played well allowing 97 yards while forcing 5 turnovers. Bills Safety Jaquan Johnson making his first career start filling in for Jordan Poyer, had an interception. Bills defense is loaded with young talent at most positions. Once again Mario Addison was invisible and did not register on the defensive SEE YOU AT THE EVENTS! stat sheet. Elijah Muhammad Elijah Muhammad, the most prominent leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI), was born Elijah Poole in Sandersville, Georgia, on October 7, 1897. He was the son of sharecropper and Baptist minister Wallace Poole and his wife, Mariah. During his childhood in the racially segregated South, Poole received his basic education at a public school but soon dropped out to help his family earn a living in the fields. After his marriage to Clara Evans in 1919, he joined the “Great Migration” of African Americans to the North in 1923 which led him to Detroit, Michigan. Like many of his fellow migrants, Poole found a job in the automobile industry until the Depression forced his family to go on relief for two years. During his unemployment, Poole met Wallace Fard, the founder of the Nation of Islam who preached a gospel of Back Islam and racial supremacy. Poole joined the organization in 1931, changed his name to Elijah Muhammad and soon became such a devoted disciple that Fard made him Chief Minister of Islam. When Fard left the United States, Elijah Muhammad rose to power. “Our history did not begin in chains. It will not end in chains.”

HEALTH MATTERS

Worth Your Weight in Gold “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live”Unknown

Y

ou are a walking, talking, millionaire! Yes, you! These millions are not in the bank, in investments, real estate or other material assets. These millions are in your body. Let me explain. My business partner and soul tribe member, Edward Williams posed the following question in a Facebook live meeting, “How much does a liver transplant cost?”. I replied, “50k”. I wasn’t even close. A liver transplant costs nearly $575,000. My mind was blown. I couldn’t believe that my liver, which happens to be my favorite organ is worth $575,000! Then I started thinking, “How much does a kidney, lung, heart and intestine transplant cost? How much am I worth? What is the value of this precious and masterfully created body I have been gifted and blessed with?” If you total up all of these organs (including the liver), the cost to replace them all is about 6.6 million dollars! We are literally walking around with $6,600,000 inside of us. That gave me an entirely different perspective of my body and gave me a renewed sense of self-worth. Not only is my body an esteemed gift that holds my beloved soul. Not only is my body a melanin powerhouse, but it is also worth millions. If that doesn’t birth a desire in your spirit to do everything you can to restore, protect and heal your body, I am not sure what will. Fall Season: A Time For Caring for Your Lungs, Large Intestine and Skin Fall is a time to relish the abundance of food at the end of growing season; to reflect with gratitude on all we have been given in our lives; to seek balance and harmony in our inner and outer worlds; to release physical and emotional baggage; and to cleanse and prepare for a period of deep introspection. It is a time of letting go, particularly of old grief and attachments. In our bodies, the organs associated with the fall period are the lungs and large intestine, which govern the skin. Fall is associated with the metal element, so this season is fitting for assessing toxic metal overload and mineral balance. Our skin reflects what is going on inside of us, both physically and emotionally. When we are stressed or angry, we may be more susceptible to hives and eczema. -FoodsThe ideal foods for maintaining your health in the fall tend to be foods that are grown in or harvested during the season and high in fiber such as: legumes kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, rice beans, oat brand, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Foods to minimize or avoid: dairy, meat, wheat, sugar, saturated fats and heated oils. -The Complete Natural Medicine Guide by Dr Sat Dharam Kaaur, MD

FILMMAKER ADDISON HENDERSON MAKING MOVES with G.O.D. Buffalo’s Own, Jazz Master, Lonnie Smith

B

uffalo-bred director, actor, and writer Addison Henderson is making waves in the movie industry. His first feature film titled Givers Of Death (or G.O.D for short) which premiered at the American Black Film Festival also won Best Screenplay last year at ABFF. Now, inking a worldwide distribution deal for the apocalyptic, sci-fi drama with California-based production company Buffalo8, Henderson is preparing to release G.O.D in theatres next year. “I’m very excited about what we have right now because not only am I gonna come to Buffalo, I’m gonna bring jobs to Buffalo, new opportunities for kids in Buffalo and hopefully we’re gonna inspire some folks,” Henderson exclaimed. Filmed entirely in the Queen City, G.O.D tells the story of a hitman trying to gain redemption after a deadly pandemic kills a third of the world’s population. Also, tackling the idea of peace and what it means, Henderson’s work with the movie pulled from many of his own experiences.

Addison Henderson

“I was going through my own wasteland emotionally. My friends were sick. I was dealing with mortality. I was going through a divorce...It was just a tough time for me. So from that, [I] birthed this film. Tragedies, personal tragedies, but I wanted to use it as a way of a healing process for myself,” he explained. Creating plays, documentaries, and short films for the past 20 years, Henderson’s unique work as a storyteller is deeply inspired by his father. The son of the late Bishop William H. Henderson who pastored the historic Michigan Street Baptist Church, the rising director’s love for stories comes from his father who was well-traveled and most notably spread awareness about his Baptist Church and its involvement in the Underground Railroad.

Dr. Lonnie Smith, an NEA Jazz Master known for his dynamism and wizardry on the Hammond B3 organ, died last Tuesday. He was 79 years old. His mother introduced him to gospel, blues, jazz and early rhythm and blues. As a teenager in the 1950s, Smith began learning music by ear and played trumpet and other brass instruments in school. After a brief stint in the Air Force, Smith returned home to Buffalo in the early Dr. Lonnie Smith 1960s, Around that same time, he began frequenting a music store owned by local accordion player Art Kubera, Smith recalls he told him he could have the organ if he moved it. He taught himself to play it and his career began. He was soon working regularly at the Pine Grill in Buffalo. In 1964, Smith broke onto the international jazz scene when organist Jack McDuff's young guitarist, George Benson, formed a group of his own. Benson secured Smith for the organ chair in his new quartet. After their residencies at Harlem's Palm Cafe and Minton's Playhouse that same year, both Benson and Smith were signed by Columbia Records and made albums as leaders. When saxophonist Lou Donaldson hired Smith and Benson for 1967's Blue Note smash Alligator Boogaloo, the result was a surprise jukebox hit whose title track landed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The rest is history! In 2017 the National Endowment for the arts named him a Jazz Master, the country's highest official honor for a jazz musician.

Oscar Alston to Perform Solo Among The Silos

“My dad was 85 but he was a fighter, a battler...he left a tremendous legacy for me. He taught me everything I needed to be great...I hold that torch for him,” Henderson mentioned. Schondra Aytch

Also, doing a significant amount of traveling himself, Henderson’s connections particularly in New York and L.A. is pushing him to the forefront now. A former student of the worldrenowned acting school HB studios, a longtime volunteer of the American Black Film Festival, and a close friend and teammate of Chadwick Boseman’s during movies like Black Panther and 21 Bridges, the breakout talent’s work is a result of years of dedication. “When it was time for me to make G.O.D, [Boseman] went through a process with me, where I went back to L.A., sat with him and we were going through the notes on the script all while he was battling [cancer]. I’m truly blessed to have spent so much time with him,” Henderson added. With G.O.D picking up momentum, the burgeoning creator is planning to bring more stories to the silver and big screen. Armed with written pitches for television shows, short films, and a strong foundation in his own production company Night Owl Republic Films, Henderson currently has his focus on a newly finished script for a sci-fi mystery he is working on with a major studio titled Blythe. “They are very interested and we are under the impression that we are doing this movie next summer. When people see this movie - when people from Buffalo see this movie, they’re gonna be like ‘Holy Moly, this dude is Buffalo. He is so Buffalo!” Want to learn more about Addison Henderson? Billie D. Banks

Sunrise: September 11, 1925 - Sunset: October 1, 2021

The Last of The “Black Rock Fathers”

H

e was 96 years young. Billie Banks, along with a host of amazing Black men who settled with their families in the Jasper Parish Housing Projects in the late fifties and early sixties, raised their children and set examples of resilience, respect and love. On October 5 we celebrated his life, and what will surely be a grand reunion of the unsung heroes /Black Rock Fathers, who transitioned before him, among them : Mr. Morris, Mr. Druitt, Mr. West, Mr. Jackson, Mr. Garmon, Mr. Jones, Mr. Fair, Mr. Ross, Mr. Milliner, Mr.Jaycox, Mr. McKinney, and others. -From Texas to BuffaloBillie Banks was born September 11, 1925 in Henderson, Texas to Ruth Mosley and John Edward Banks. As a young child, he was courted by Hollywood scouts to come to California to try out for a role in "The Little Rascals" movies, but his beloved, protective grandmother, Mama Louise, refused to let anyone take him away. Billie grew up in the Jim Crow South and attended Henderson Negro High School where he was a star athlete and played football. He graduated from Henderson High, a major accomplishment during those days, and was offered a scholarship to Jarvis College in Texas. Billie played semi-professional football and baseball, earning him the nickname, "Billie Bye Bye" for his awesome speed. As a young man, he opted to "go for the money," moved to Buffalo, New York in the forties, and took a job on the New York Central Railroad as a chef. Billie was drafted to fight in the Korean War, where he served his country as a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army. He earned the United Nations Service medal, the Korean Service Medal and Bronze Star/Combat Infantry Badge after being wounded, in the war. He was honorably discharged in1952. He married his high school sweetheart, and former cheerleader, Eula B. Banks, who's favorite cheer of encouragement was "That's alright boys, fight on!" They had seven children: Barbara (Alnisa), Charles Ray, Sharon (deceased), Yvonne, Bryant, Billie Ruth and John Edward. As a struggling young family, he moved from the Railroad to work at the Carborandum Plant in Niagara Falls. He then went on to work for American Standard/ American Radiator, where he often told the story of being fired for being a "Smart Negro." After that he worked whatever jobs he could find , including a maintenance man at the old Deco restaurant, until landing a "good job" at General Motors. There Billie worked as a machinist and Manufacturing Supervisor. While employed he earned a Certificate in Labor Relations Leadership through Cornell University. He retired from GM in 1992. “Pop” and Daddy-O” as he was affectionately known, was a strict disciplinarian, and along with his beloved wife, dedicated his entire life to raising six successful children. An advent reader and writer, he was politically active in his community and served as tenant council president. During his retirement he volunteered his services to work as the editorial cartoonist for the family newspaper, The Challenger, as well as distribution manager for 25 years. In 2017 Legislator Betty Jean Grant presented him with a proclamation declaring September 11 as “Phenomenal Father Billie Banks Day” in the County of Erie.” Later in life he adopted the quintessential African name Mujahid, which means "Warrior." He bestowed the name Ikenga, meaning “inner sprit” upon his beloved wife and soul mate Eula. A true jazz and blues fan, he loved good music. He loved to laugh and dance (well into his mid 90's). And he loved us. We, his children, are eternally thankful to "Daddy-O" for keeping our family together. We thank him for all the sacrifices he made. We thank him for his grace, mercy and forgiveness for our age-appropriate behaviors. He never turned his back on us and he was always supportive. Billie Banks was the greatest dad in the world! He leaves behind to cherish his beloved memory: three sons, Charles Ray (Wanda) of Atlanta; Bryant (Kim Ferrill), and John (Lisa); three daughters, Barbara (aka Alnisa), Yvonne, Billie (Kym); two brothers, Raymond Thompson (Sarah) and Robert Thompson of California; a host of grandchildren: Leah, Shola, Celeste, Marcus, Phyllis, Bryant, Kita, Sharon, Aaron, Kristin, Candace, Cameron, Kendil, Shatoya, John Edward II and LaJonna; great grand children - Sanaa, Damir, Phoenix, Justin, Tyrell, Bryant III, Tamryn, Nyree, Jamere, Javon, Nakia, Corbin, Isiah and Jada Rose; great-great grandchildren: Justice and Mia; niece Kismet "Binkey," nephews Kevin and Kent Sean; a dear friend Ernestine Wilkinson; grand puppy "Bucket" and an extended Black Rock family. Billie was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Eula B.; daughter, Sharon; mother Ruth and father, John Edward Banks.

The family would like to thank everyone who played a part in easing our pain during this home going celebration. Your display of love and acts of kindness will never be forgotten. The expert and sensitive care of our loved one was entrusted to the incomparable service of Alan R. Core Funeral Home 1933 Kensington Avenue. Internment, Forest Lawn Cemetery.

"One day, some identifiable life form will come to earth and ask, "Who are these people...these Black Americans?" CLIFF ROBINSON EVENT continued

cear, and today’s NBA players are speaking out, Clifford was ahead of his time as he saw the value of building bridges between the Buffalo Police force ad community long ago. He felt it was important to sponsor the Police Basketball League in his hometown of Buffalo in hopes to increase better relationships. “(Last July) he was asked by his friend, 'What do you think about the NBA Chief Executive Officer Adam Silver supporting the players in their call for social justice?' He said, “They’re trying. took a minute but I applaud them.” Clifford loved his family, friends and fans! He was a fighter and had a mental fortitude that was priceless.”

Support for Legislator April Baskin's Erie County Health Equity Act of 2021 Dear Editor: Our generational neglect of Buffalo’s East Side continues to leave its 150,000 residents profoundly susceptible to COVID-19 illness and death. Buffalo’s East Side is predominantly Black and Brown, with the highest rates of extreme social vulnerability in Western New York. Extreme social vulnerability, as identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has been directly tied to a 30% increase in COVID-19 mortality. University at Buffalo Professor Henry Louis Taylor, Jr. identified in 1991 the tragic effect of East Side neglect – dilapidated housing and poor rates of homeownership, over policing, limited public transportation options, underinvestment in schools and children’s programs, poor job prospects – on the health of its residents. In a similar 2014 study entitled, Striving for a Healthier Buffalo, Dr. Taylor found that little had changed. Today, despite DSRIP investments from 2015-2020 totaling nearly $400 million dollars, housing quality, transportation availability, employment prospects, and health outcomes in Buffalo’s East Side remain woefully substandard. Even before COVID-19, more than 50% of Black and Brown residents of Erie County were dying prematurely. It's time for Erie County to get serious about health equity. That’s why I’m proud to support The Erie County Health Equity Act of 2021: a bill proposed by Representative April Baskin and currently before the Erie County Legislature. Once law, this act will create an Office of Health Equity within the Erie County Department of Health and establish an Erie County Health Equity Advisory Board. These permanent structures will hold our elected officials and government health administrators accountable for their decision making about investments in the County’s health system. The created structures will regularly analyze and publicize the health disparities that currently exist, however politically unappealing the results of such analysis may be. The Act will ensure that models for tackling such inequities are pilot tested and, if successful, recommended for ongoing investment. Most significantly, the created structures will approach health from a social justice perspective: one that incorporates livable wages, affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, and access to healthy food. Let your elected officials know that you, too, support The Erie County Health Equity Act.

Study Shows Police Killings in U.S. Have Been Widely Undercounted

P

By Lauren Victoria Burke

olice killings in the United States have been massively undercounted according to a study by the University of Washington. The study was published on September 27 in the Lancet, peer-reviewed medical journal. Researchers compared data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) federal database alongside data from three groups tracking deaths in police custody and news reports. The study demonstrated the disproportionate impact of police killings on Black people in America. Last summer, after the May 25, 2020 killing of George Floyd by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, there were protests in the streets around the U.S. The moment brought forward even more analysis over police violence. Over the last five years several high-profile killings of African Americans in the U.S. have been caught on camera and forced legislatures to re-evaluate policing policies. The study in part read that, “across all races and states in the USA, we estimate 30,800 deaths from police violence between 1980 and 2018; this represents 17,100 more deaths than reported by the NVSS. Over this time period, the age-standardized mortality rate due to police violence was highest in non-Hispanic Black people, followed by Hispanic people of any race. This variation is further affected by the decedent’s sex and shows large discrepancies between states.” Talks around details on language in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in Congress ended in late September after a dispute between Republican Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) over what Scott defined as “defunding police.” Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) told NNPA on September 30 that he has not given up on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and is looking for a way to revive the conversation and move the legislation forward. “I am not giving up and I’ve gone over it with my staff and asked: What are our options?” Sen. Booker told NNPA. The study was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. umanity grows more and more intelligent, yet there is clearly more trouble and less happiness daily. How can this be so? It is because intelligence is not the same thing as wisdom. When a society misuses partial intelligence and ignores holistic wisdom, its people forget the benefits of a plain and natural life. Seduced by their desires, emotions, and egos, they become slaves to bodily demands, to luxuries, to power and unbalanced religion and psychological excuses. Then the reign of calamity and confusion begins.(Excerpted from Hau Hu Ching #Seventy

few days ago, I was visiting the Face Book page of a prominent Black female Democrat and saw that she had showcased a post from Stefan Mychajliw, our Republican County Comptroller, bashing Mayoral candidate, India Walton. Now, I thought this particular female was "woke" and knew that Stefan M. is portrayed as a Trumpster who went to Washington, D.C. and joined the Insurrectionists and rioters, on January 6th in the US Capitol. And now, here he is, on a sistah's page bashing a Black woman whom he cannot even vote for because he lives in Hamburg, NY! Stefan also demonized Brenda McDuffie, when she was CEO of the Buffalo Urban League, and tried to belittle her in public several years ago. I believe the County Comptroller has a problem with strong, Black women. Stefan and several other local, prominent Republicans also attended Mayor Brown's first fundraiser after he announced that he was doing a Write In campaign. Another malcontent has been former Buffalo Mayor, Tony Masiello. He has been bashing and lying on India every since she won the Democratic Primary, in June. He stated that India was not a Democrat. He lied. Mayoral candidate India Walton, could not have run and won the Democratic Primary if she was not a registered Democrat. Mayor Masiello is obviously afraid of losing his lucrative second career job being a lobbyist for the City of Buffalo, in Albany. Masiello seemed so upset the night Ms. Walton won the Primary, I thought he was going to have a stroke. He is always telling us how much he loves Black folks and how he played basketball with a lot of our Black athletes. But did he tell y'all that when he was the Mayor he signed a resolution, in 2002, to downsize Black representation in the Buffalo Common Council by eliminating the Council President and the at-large Councilmembers' positions? Since three of those four positions were held by black elected officials, James W. Pitts, Beverly A. Gray and Charley H. Fisher, his approval of that resolution has negatively impacted Black representation and Black empowerment, in the Black community for over two decades as it stands right now. So, no thank you, Republican Stefan Mychajliw and Republicrat, Tony Masiello. We don't need you to bash our candidate, India Walton. Some renegade element of the Byron Brown Write In Campaign is already doing a lie and slander-filled hatchet job on Ms. Walton even as I write this column...

LEGAL NOTICE

He made a couple of throws that I wish he’d have held back. But I thought he did exactly what we really asked him to do, other than taking care of the ball. It wasn’t on him. You put anybody out there today. You could put Joe Montana out there today, and the way we played, you’re not going to have any success on offense.” It’s a shame that a Black man always seems to get NFL Head Coaching jobs with teams in transition. The Houston Texans front office has gutted this team in order to get a top draft pick for next season in hopes of landing a quarterback. Tremaine Edmunds starting middle linebacker had a career game with 6 tackles, 1 interception and 1 pass defense. Tremaine must continue to step his game up. I think Tremaine is more of an outside linebacker and play more on the outside while Matt Milano recovers from hamstring injury. The Bills defense now joins the 2000 Ravens, and 1991 Washington Football Team as the only teams since 1990 to record two shutouts in the first four games of the season. The Bills defensive unit has limited opponents to 44 points this season, the second fewest in franchise history through first four games of a season. The Bills travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. This will be a true test for the team and I see the Bills offensive unit being able to run the ball effectively and not rely on Josh Allen to win the game. Allen must continue to play within himself and not allow the moment to be TOO big for him. Bills defensive unit need to be steady and not allow many big plays by Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and Bills defense will bend but not break in a very exciting game won by Bills 31 – 28. Bills running game will be the key with upgraded offensive line Follow me on social media: georgeradney@georgeradman, LIVE STREAMING: Pro Talk Plus, The Winners Edge, RADIO: WLGZ 105.5 FM The Beat of Rochester, Every Saturday Morning 7 – 8 AM. Invent. Reinvent. Never be the same. On view beginning October 8, James G. Pappas: Relative to Music celebrates the intersections of art, Black culture and empowerment, and social justice as they translate across his work as an artist, educator, and community leader. Like jazz, Pappas' legacy is a lasting testament to experimentation, improvisation, and breaking the mold.
